  4. he IRS has launched its Free File program for the 2024 tax season — with its largest-ever expansion to eligibility. Now, anyone who earned an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $79,000 or less in 2023 can access guided tax prep that'll help them file their federal taxes online for free. The new income cap is $6,000 higher than last year’s $73,000, and, according to an analysis by Money, marks the largest annual increase in the program’s 22-year history. Typically, the IRS adjusts the income limit by roughly $1,000 to $2,000 in any given year, if it changes the limit at all. The previous two tax seasons, for example, the IRS held the Free File income threshold steady at $73,000. Given the historic increase to the program's income threshold, many more Americans are expected to qualify for free online tax filing. If you have an AGI higher than $79,000, you can still use IRS Free File, too. You just won’t qualify to use free guided tax software through the IRS’s tax prep partners listed above. Instead, you’ll need to use the IRS’s fillable forms tool to manually complete your tax return. IRS Free File remains underutilized The IRS’s best-kept secret just might be its free e-filing program. According to the Free File Alliance (FFA), a nonprofit coalition of the IRS’s tax software partners, about 70% of taxpayers — accounting for some 100 million Americans — qualify. The alliance was forged in 2002 between the IRS and private tax prep corporations on the understanding that the IRS would not create its own free tax-filing software (read: not directly compete with them) so long as the tax companies agreed to offer free guided tax prep and e-filing for low-to-middle income taxpayers. But each year, only a small portion of Americans take advantage of this program and instead rely on paid versions of tax software or hire tax professionals directly — often unwittingly throwing away precious money in the process. According to tax officials, Americans spent about $150 and nine hours filing their taxes in 2023. The latest figures from the FFA estimate that 3 million Americans used IRS Free File last year. Given that over 162 million taxpayers filed in 2023, that suggests less than 2% of all taxpayers filed their taxes online through Free File. How to use IRS Free File Be sure to gather your necessary paperwork before beginning, especially your income statements like W2s and 1099s. If your AGI — defined as your total income minus any eligible deductions or adjustments — is close to the cutoff, you may want to check Line 11 of last year’s Form 1040 as a guide. To use IRS Free File tax software, first choose one of the eight IRS partners based on your eligibility using the IRS’s website. While the overall AGI threshold is $79,000, certain partners may choose to set stricter criteria based on age, income or location. Not all partners offer free state income tax filing assistance. Once you choose the right provider, simply follow the guided prompts. If you have an AGI above that amount, you can complete your federal taxes using the IRS’s Free File Fillable Forms. Read the instructions carefully, as this tool requires a lot more manual input and is only capable of basic calculations. State tax forms aren’t available through this tool. Once you’ve manually completed your federal tax return, you should print it for your records. To file, sign your return and either mail it to the IRS or submit it online. Don't forget to separately file your state taxes where required. 7. Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi announced that the Ras El-Hekma project will become the largest tourism project on the Mediterranean in the next few years. He said that the Egyptian state is committed to communicating clearly, honestly and transparently with the people about any new project. He made these remarks during the fifth edition of the “Able with Difference” celebration, which honours the people with disabilities. He said that the project will include an international city that offers services and activities throughout the year, some of which are unprecedented in Egypt. He also revealed that the funds for the project, which were previously announced by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, have arrived and been deposited to the Central Bank. He added that the state will explain the details of the amounts received soon. Al-Sisi expressed his gratitude to the UAE for their support, saying: “It is not easy for someone to put $35 billion in two months. There is nothing like that in the world. This is a clear form of support.” He also noted that every event, problem or crisis that happens anywhere in the world affects Egypt. During the celebration, Al-Sisi instructed the government to allocate EGP 10 billion to the “Able with Difference” fund. Regarding the situation in the Gaza Strip, Al-Sisi emphasized Egypt’s efforts to ease the suffering of the people in Gaza as much as possible. He said: “In times of conflict, there are many statements, some of which are true and others are not true, but from the first day we have been keen to make the Rafah crossing a lifeline and a way to provide aid and relief to those who need it.” He added: “Egypt never closed the crossing, but in order to provide assistance in situations of conflict, we must be careful that no problem will occur while we are doing this.” President Al-Sisi also expressed his hope that a ceasefire would be achieved soon, so that real relief would start for the people in Gaza. He added: “I had to affirm our continued support and we will keep supporting and aiding the Palestinian cause until we reach a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.” https://www.dailynewsegypt.com/2024/02/28/egypts-ras-el-hekma-to-be-largest-tourism-project-on-mediterranean-al-sisi/
  8. In the pantheon of ancient Egyptian gods, Thoth, the deity of wisdom and learning, held a unique connection with the animal kingdom. His association with the hamadryas baboon not only underscores the religious complexity of the time but also presents a puzzle that has long perplexed historians and biologists alike: the journey of baboons to Egypt. Researchers recently unraveled this mystery, nestled at the intersection of biology, anthropology, and Egyptology. The findings shed light on early globalization, human-wildlife interactions, and the cultural significance of these sacred animals. Sacred baboons of Egypt and Thoth Historical records well-document the ancient Egyptians’ veneration of animals. Various deities portray creatures that were, in many cases, foreign to the Nile Valley. Thoth, revered for his knowledge, often appeared in the form of a hamadryas baboon, a species not native to Egypt. Ancient Egyptians imported, mummified, and offered these baboons as votive tokens. They served as a tangible link between the po[CENSORED]ce and their gods. However, the origins of these sacred animals, how they were transported to Egypt, and the reasons for their divine status have been subjects of scholarly debate for years. Tracing the origins Biologist Gisela Kopp’s intriguing research took on these enigmatic questions. The study is emblematic of interdisciplinary collaboration. It brought together biologists, anthropologists, and Egyptologists in a collective effort to trace the geographic origins of mummified baboons found in Egypt. Employing advanced genetic analysis techniques, Kopp and her team examined the mitochondrial genomes of the baboon mummies. She compared them with contemporary samples from various regions in Africa. This extensive comparison, facilitated by the consistent genetic variance among baboon po[CENSORED]tions over time, enabled researchers to pinpoint the baboons’ original habitat. Unearthing historical trade routes Anthropologist Nathaniel Dominy contributed earlier research using stable isotopes to trace the baboons’ geography. The combined insights from genetic analysis and chemical signatures led the team to an astonishing discovery. The baboons were native to the Horn of Africa, specifically a region within modern-day Eritrea. This finding resonates with historical accounts of the ancient port of Adulis. This po[CENSORED]r destination gained its reputation from flourishing trade in luxury goods and rare animals, including baboons. The revelation gains significance against the backdrop of Punt, a legendary land referenced in ancient Egyptian texts as a source of precious commodities. The precise location of Punt has eluded historians. However, its importance as a possible lynchpin in early global maritime trade networks is undebatable. Gisela Kopp’s research intriguingly suggests that Punt and Adulis could represent the same geographical location. It was simply known by different names across eras. The convergence of biological data with historical analysis provided the key to linking these two places. Baboons, Egypt, and cultural context The representation of baboons in Egyptian lore, exclusive to the region, raises compelling cultural questions. They are considered pests in societies where they naturally occur due to their crop-damaging behavior. In ancient Egypt, however, these animals were revered and symbolically linked to the divine. The reasons behind this cultural dichotomy remain speculative. However, the practice of mass mummification of baboons highlights the sophisticated interaction between humans and wildlife during that period. It also points to a complex coexistence that extended beyond domestication. Ancient DNA offers new avenues Remarkably, Kopp’s research marks a pioneering venture in the field of biology. It represents the first successful analysis of ancient DNA extracted from mummified non-human primates. This achievement paves the way for new studies into the historical dynamics of human-wildlife engagement, genetic diversity, and disease transmission patterns. The interactions of ancient Egyptians with rare animals, evidenced through mummification, underscore the intricate relationships that humans have shared with the wild. These practices, extraordinary for their time, open a window into understanding the environmental, social, and possibly even epidemiological aspects of human history. In summary, the journey of baboons in ancient Egypt, from sacred deities to a scientific enigma, traverses through various facets of human knowledge. As we unravel these mysteries, we gain more than just historical insight. We also uncover layers of our relationship with nature, trade, culture, and technology. Gisela Kopp’s study, thus, stands as a testament to the power of interdisciplinary research in rewriting history, offering new perspectives on our shared past, and inspiring a deeper exploration into the annals of human civilization. 11. A cat killer obsessed with violence and death has been jailed for life with a minimum of 24 years after being convicted of murdering a man she deliberately targeted as part of a sexual fantasy. Scarlet Blake, 26, targeted Jorge Martin Carreno, 30, as he walked home from a night out in Oxford in July 2021. Blake, who is a transgender woman, led him to a secluded riverbank where he was hit on the back of the head with a vodka bottle, strangled and then pushed into the River Cherwell, where he drowned. Sentencing Blake on Monday at Oxford crown court, Mr Justice Chamberlain said: “Your decision to kill Jorge was not a reaction to something he had said or done. It was not a momentary mistake. It was not a decision made in anger, or because your emotions overcame you. It was the culmination of a plan you had been considering and formulating for months.” The judge said that there was no evidence of sexual activity at the scene of the murder but there was “ample evidence [Blake] derived sexual gratification from strangulation”. Listing aggravating factors, the judge said: “There was therefore a clear sexual motivation for the killing. You also believe that you would derive pleasure, whether sexual or not, from the experience of killing a person. I am sure that you did derive pleasure from killing Jorge as you had from killing the cat.” Prosecutors said Blake killed Carreno, a BMW worker, because she had a “fixation with violence and with knowing what it would be like to kill someone”. During her evidence, she claimed she had a fragmented personality, which included being a cat, and miaowed at the jury to show how she would interact with friends. The murder came four months after Blake livestreamed the horrific killing of her neighbour’s cat. Blake used cat food and a carrier to lure the pet. Setting up a tripod and camera, she suspended the cat with a ribbon, before cutting it open. After the killing, Blake dissected the animal, decapitated it, removed its fur and skin, and placed its body in a blender. Once she had dissected the cat, she said: “Well, one day, I want to learn how to do this to a person.” During the video, the New Order song True Faith played in the background, which the court heard was in homage to a Netflix documentary called Don’t F**k with Cats about a man who killed felines and murdered a human. During the sentencing, the judge told Blake she had an “obsession with harm and death”. “You attributed your morbid interests to a split or dissociative personality using the language of psychiatry or psychoanalysis,” the judge said. “You talked about the difficulties you had had since transitioning in childhood, to live as a woman, and about your troubled relationship with your parents. “All of this was part of an elaborate attempt to rationalise what you had done and shift responsibility to others. There is no evidence that you suffer from any relevant mental illness or other mental disorder. What you did is not the fault of a society that didn’t accept you. It is not the fault of your parents.” For murder, Blake was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 24 years, less 196 days already spent in custody on remand. She was sentenced concurrently to four months for causing suffering to an animal and two months for criminal damage. Carreno was described by his brothers and parents as “someone who radiated kindness and humour and spread joy with his wit and contagious curiosity”. He had been out with co-workers in Oxford city centre and was trying to get home when Blake found him sitting in the street. She was seen on CCTV walking the streets of Oxford wearing a heavy military-style hooded jacket, face mask and carrying a rucksack. Prosecutors suggested Blake was carrying a “murder kit” in her rucksack, including a garotte and leopard-print dressing gown cord, which she rejected. Giving evidence, Blake denied she was looking for a victim and instead had gone for a walk because she could not sleep. She said she walked with Carreno to an area called Parson’s Pleasure at the riverside and left him there alive to go home, telling the jury she did not know how he died. Suggestions that Carreno, an electrical engineering graduate, may have killed himself were rejected by his friends and by a Home Office pathologist who said he did not believe the Spanish national died accidentally. Prosecutors said Blake had an “extreme interest in death and in harm” and got sexual gratification from violence and killings. During the trial, jurors were shown a disturbing video of Blake consensually tying a ligature around her then partner’s neck from behind and pulling it tight until she appeared to fall unconscious. The trial heard that Blake, who was previously known as Alice Wang, came to the UK from China aged nine, and came out to her parents as transgender at the age of 12. The court also heard that Blake had developed an online relationship with Ashlynn Bell, a trans woman who lives in the US. The court heard Blake confessed to Bell, who told jurors she is also sexually stimulated by violence, that she had killed Carreno with a homemade garotte before throwing his body in the water. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/feb/26/cat-killer-sentenced-to-life-for-oxford-as-part-of-sexual-fantasy
  12. court on February 6, 2024, sentenced the prominent politician Ahmed Tantawy, along with his campaign advisor and 21 of his detained supporters, to a year in prison for alleged offenses associated with his presidential challenge to President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Human Rights Watch said today. The court also barred Tantawy from running for national elections for five years. Tantawy and his aide, Mohamed Abu al-Dyar, were released on bail pending appeal. The ruling by a Cairo court for minor offenses was entirely based on Tantawy’s peaceful political activism and the efforts of Tantawy’s campaign to collect support statements before the December 2023 presidential vote, in which Sisi won a third six-year term with 89.6 percent of the vote. Human Rights Watch documented the months-long series of unlawful arrests, intimidation, and prosecutions against potential candidates and their supporters which preceded the election, all of which effectively prevented any meaningful competition. “The Egyptian authorities should immediately throw out the abusive charges against Tantawy and his supporters, which are nothing more than retaliation for his peaceful campaign to challenge President Sisi,” said Amr Magdi, senior Middle East and North Africa researcher at Human Rights Watch. “It isn't just that the authorities are punishing peaceful dissent. By barring Tantawy from running in future elections, the authorities are sending a clear message that no serious challenge to Sisi will be tolerated.” Tantawy and his supporters can appeal their sentences under Supreme State Security Case No. 2255 of 2023. The court ordered him and Abu al-Dyar to pay 20,000 Egyptian pounds each (about US$648) to avoid detention pending their appeal. Tantawy was the most prominent challenger to Sisi. Tantawy terminated his campaign on October 13, 2023, after repressive tactics by the authorities, including retaliatory detentions of his family members and supporters, prevented his campaign from collecting the 25,000 voters’ endorsements required to officially file his candidacy. Tantawy’s campaign was able to galvanize plausible traction in Egypt’s otherwise strictly curtailed political sphere. When his campaign began collecting unofficial support statements to showcase the size of his support, the authorities arrested his supporters, claiming that this violated election laws because they printed out support statements without authorization. Law No. 45 of 2014 on the Regulation of the Exercise of Political Rights provides for a minimum of one year in prison and/or a fine of 1,000 to 5,000 pounds (about $32 to $162) for “printing or distributing, in any way, election ballots or documents used in the electoral process” without authorization. Using this article to restrict the ability of activists to collect support statements or endorsements in the context of a political campaign is incompatible with the rights to freedom of expression and association under international human rights law, Human Rights Watch said. Tantawy’s campaign shared with Human Rights Watch a list of dozens of supporters whom it said authorities have detained in recent months in nine Supreme State Security cases. The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights said that at least 127 people have been detained on charges similar to those in Tantawy’s case and in relation to his campaign. The Supreme State Security Prosecution (SSSP) is a branch of the public prosecution that has served in recent years as one of the government’s primary tools of repression, often keeping tens of thousands of dissidents in custody in prolonged and abusive pretrial detention, without a chance to be released on bail and based solely on peaceful activism. The SSSP routinely fails to investigate cases of torture and abuses in detention while using torture-tainted confessions against political dissidents and critics. All those arrested without credible evidence of a recognizable offense should be immediately and unconditionally released, Human Rights Watch said. “By continuing the persecution of Tantawy for challenging Sisi, Egyptian authorities have further pulled the mask off a farcical electoral process that ensures one-man rule and annihilates Egyptians’ right to genuine political participation,” Magdi said. https://www.hrw.org/news/2024/02/08/egypt-court-punishes-activists-challenging-al-sisi

  16. El-Sisi's directives came during a meeting between President El-Sisi, PM Mostafa Madbouly, and Minister of Finance Mohamed Maiit. The President was briefed during the meeting on the government’s measures to control the prices of goods and services in the markets, reduce inflation, and achieve stability at the macroeconomic level. El-Sisi directed the government to contain the repercussions of external and domestic economic crises. The presidential decree sti[CENSORED]tes raising all salaries for government employees by 50 percent at a minimum of EGP 1,000 to EGP 1,200 to reach EGP 6,000. The minimum wage for government employees was last raised in September 2023 from EGP 3,500 to EGP 4,000. Meanwhile, the social package allocates EGP 15 billion for increasing the salaries of doctors, nurses, teachers, and university faculty. In addition, El-Sisi issued instructions that EGP 4.5 billion be allocated to increasing the wages of medical professionals and nursing staff, whereby the risk allowance for medical professionals was increased by EGP 250 to EGP 300. Similarly, the allowance for night and overnight shifts increased by 100 percent. El-Sisi further instructed the government to allocate another EGP 6 billion to hire 120,000 new doctors, nurses, teachers, and workers in other administrative bodies. In addition, the social package includes a 15 percent increase in pensions for 13 million citizens at EGP 74 billion. It also includes a 15 percent increase in "Takaful and Karama" pensions at the cost of EGP 5.5 billion in FY2023/2024. Moreover, an additional EGP 41 billion will be allocated within the package to "Takaful and Karama" pensions for FY2024/2025. Furthermore, the social package includes raising the income tax exemption for all state employees in the government, public, and private sectors by 33 percent, from EGP 45,000 up to EGP 60,000, at an annual cost of EGP 5 billion Egypt has been facing economic difficulties and shortages in foreign currency since February 2022 because of disruptions in global supply chains resulting from the Russian-Ukrainian war. Egypt's annual headline inflation decelerated to 35.2 percent in December, down from 36.4 percent in November, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS). However, the inflation rate in December remains significantly higher than the 21.9 percent recorded in December 2022. The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) aims to keep inflation within seven percent (±2 percent) until the end of 2024. Shortly after the announcement of the broad social protection package, informed sources refuted rumours that the increase in wages and pensions was a prelude to a new devaluation of the Egyptian pound, according to Extra News Since March 2022, Egypt has devalued its currency on three separate occasions, resulting in a depreciation of around 70 percent for the pound against the US dollar. https://english.ahram.org.eg/News/517367.aspx
  17. CAIRO - 17 May 2023: A draft law regulating the possession of dangerous animals and keeping dogs, which was finally approved by the House of Representatives, prohibited bringing dangerous animals into public places. Article 3 of the law sti[CENSORED]tes that: “It is forbidden to take any of the dangerous animals in public places," while Article 4 of the same draft law set a set of controls and measures to ensure that the animals do not escape, as it sti[CENSORED]tes: “The owner of dangerous animals is obligated to take the necessary precautions and measures to ensure that they do not escape." Article 5 sti[CENSORED]tes: “The owner of dangerous animals is obligated to provide veterinary care for them, in particular immunizing them against diseases determined by the competent minister based on the presentation of the competent authority, and to keep records that include their medical history, in addition to providing safe and suitable shelters for dangerous animals in accordance with the requirements specified by the authority competent, and feed it with appropriate food and in sufficient quantities." The draft law aims to establish a legislative and legal framework to deal with some of the phenomena that Egyptian society has witnessed in the recent period related to dealing with dangerous animals that cause harm to humans and animals. The report indicated that the Egyptian society witnessed during the last period a number of catastrophic accidents caused by some animals, including dogs, especially species that are famous for their ferocity, whether they were accompanied by their owner or while roaming freely in gardens, parks, residential or hotel buildings without their owner or their companion taking the procedures and measures that provide protection and security to others. This phenomenon resulted in the injury of a large number of children, young people and the elderly of both sexes with injuries that almost killed their lives, in addition to the spread of the phenomenon of acquiring predatory animals such as lions, tigers, species of monkeys and other dangerous animals, and their owners not taking care and caution in dealing with them and leaving them loose, which led to their escape, causing panic among the citizens. The report pointed out that the phenomenon of the spread of stray dogs in Egyptian streets and squares without protection or health care was monitored, which caused an increase in sterilization cases until it reached about 400 thousand injuries, which burdened the state’s general budget with huge financial burdens to import rabies serum. https://www.egypttoday.com/Article/1/124424/Egypt-s-draft-law-forbids-taking-dangerous-animals-in-public
