Tech expos are the best place to see some of the wildest tech innovations, and this year’s Mobile World Congress didn’t disappoint. Transparent laptops, bending phones and a fashionable pair of AR glasses were just some of the exciting devices we could see in Barcelona. We already have our list of what we thought were the best products and concepts at the MWC 24.Parts of it were expected, like the global releases of Xiaomi’s and Honor’s flagships. Samsung’s Galaxy Ring and the OnePlus Watch 2 may look quite common, but both have intriguing and different concepts of how such accessories should function. And on the wild end were Motorola’s bending phone and Lenovo’s transparent laptop. All in all, MWC 2024 delivered on all our expectations and on top of it, it pleasantly surprised us.However, we want to learn what excited you. Was it one of the flagship smartphones? Or maybe you can’t wait to put a Galaxy Ring on your finger? Did the futuristic ideas of a smartphone or a laptop win you over? Share your thoughts in the comments. https://www.phonearena.com/news/vote-now-what-was-your-favorite-gadget-at-mwc-2024_id155867

It's a mobile world, but we have not fully abandoned the desktop. The real work (and a lot of the play) of computing requires a full personal computing system, and to get the most out of that, you need software. Software can be expensive, but free programs have been a mainstay of the desktop experience for decades, and today's offerings are pretty powerful. Software developers can adopt an ad-based model, donation-ware to keep things afloat, or a shareware/freemium model that charges for extra features. Something to always watch for: Crapware installers. To make ends meet, many creators of otherwise great free software, or the services that offer the programs for download, bundle in things you don't want. Worse, the installation routine obfuscates the steps, so you provide the unwanted program tacit permission to be installed. For more about how to spot and avoid this problem, see How to Rid a New PC of Crapware. A pro tip: Only download desktop software from the maker of the software directly. It's not foolproof—after all, developers want to eat, too—but it helps. https://me.pcmag.com/en/software-services/14432/the-best-free-software-of-2023

You have several options if you're looking for a great streaming device. Each has access to a seemingly endless number of streaming services to watch your favorite shows and discover new ones. Since the first Chromecast with Google TV 4K arrived on the scene in September 2020 and the Chromecast with Google TV (HD) in September 2022, the products have been at the top of our recommendation lists. While we didn't get a new streaming device at the Made by Google event on October 4, 2023, as we had hoped, we did get the new Google Pixel Duo and Pixel Watch 2. Despite not getting announcements for a Chromecast with Google TV refresh, we have seen a few leaks and clues to keep us interested in what may be coming. https://www.androidpolice.com/chromecast-google-tv-4k/

The seemingly endless litany of layoffs that's plagued the game industry through 2023 and into 2024 continued today as two more studios have confirmed cuts to their workforces: Dead by Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive has let 40 employees go, while Lord of the Fallen publisher CI Games has reduced its workforce by 10%. The CI Games layoffs reportedly came largely at the expense of the company's marketing team, although a GamesIndustry report says its Hexworks and Underdog internal studios were also affected. CI Games CEO Marek Tymiński later confirmed the report, saying: "To preserve business strength and stability, CI Games has made the tough but necessary decision to implement a targeted round of redundancies, affecting approximately 10% of employees across the company." "We would like to thank each of them for the part they’ve played during their time with us," Tymiński said. "Further business optimisations are being made to the organisation's pipelines and processes."Behaviour Interactive confirmed its own layoffs, first reported by Kotaku, in a statement provided to PC Gamer."Recently, changing market conditions necessitated adjusting the scope of several Behaviour projects," a studio rep said. "In these situations, our preference is always to reassign talent to other projects. Unfortunately, this option is not always available to us. These departures represented less than 3% of our total workforce." The rep later added that a total of 40 employees were let go. The layoffs come despite apparent ongoing success at both companies. Lords of the Fallen was quite good and by all appearances a significant success, while Behaviour is on a multi-year roll with the survival horror sleeper Dead by Daylight, whose recent high-profile crossovers include horror icon Chucky and Remedy's tormented faux-author Alan Wake. Behaviour also recently revealed a singleplayer project set in the Dead by Daylight universe called The Casting of Frank Stone, set to come out this year. Both sets of layoff are part of a broader pattern of cuts across the game industry that dominated headlines through 2023 and have carried on unabated in 2024: The first half of January has already seen layoffs at Bossa Studios, Unity, Twitch, Discord, and Lost Boys Interactive. Layoffs are an unfortunate but not unusual part of the business, and as unfair as it is the reduction as CI Games could be seen in that light: A studio reducing staff following the release of a new game, successful or not, is not atypical. The pattern of layoffs plaguing the game industry has been largely attributed to overly-aggressive expansion during the early years of the Covid-19 pandemic that executives have now decided is no longer sustainable: Unity and Discord, for instance, both referenced a need for increased "agility" during their recent rounds of layoffs, while Twitch CEO Daniel Clancy said last week that the company is "still meaningfully larger than it needs to be" while announcing that more than 500 employees were being let go—on top of the more than 400 that had been laid off in March 2023.Andy has been gaming on PCs from the very beginning, starting as a youngster with text adventures and primitive action games on a cassette-based TRS80. From there he graduated to the glory days of Sierra Online adventures and Microprose sims, ran a local BBS, learned how to build PCs, and developed a longstanding love of RPGs, immersive sims, and shooters. He began writing videogame news in 2007 for The Escapist and somehow managed to avoid getting fired until 2014, when he joined the storied ranks of PC Gamer. He covers all aspects of the industry, from new game announcements and patch notes to legal disputes, Twitch beefs, esports, and Henry Cavill. Lots of Henry Cavill. https://www.pcgamer.com/two-more-studios-announce-layoffs-as-2024-continues-to-suck-for-game-developers/

Will Trump's $3B share in Truth Social last, and can he use it to thwart property seizures? "It is possible," says Erik Hirsch, Co-CEO of Hamilton Lane. But "selling that much stock into the market is going to be very difficult to not have negative consequences on the stock price....it's hard to beat the market, and the market is going to want to see reality." https://edition.cnn.com/videos/politics/2024/03/23/snr-trump-truth-social-windfall.cnn

In November last year, the global animal welfare organisation Four Paws evacuated 48 wild animals from the conflict zone in Sudan’s capital Khartoum. Four Paws returned last month for the emergency rescue of some of the animals, after fighting erupted in the designated safe area near Wad Madani to which the animals had been evacuated. The lions were transferred to the sanctuary on Friday. Four Paws spokesperson Deidré Daniels said the lions spent nine months surrounded by the tragedies of war. According to IOL, the war erupted on April 15 last year during Ramadaan, between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) under Hemedti, both factions of Sudan's military government.IOL reported that the conflict centred around Khartoum and Darfur, resulting in 10 000 deaths, up to 12000 injuries, and widespread displacement. Attacks on government sites initiated the war, leading to the division of Khartoum and Omdurman between the rival factions. Daniels said the lions were traumatised, weak, emaciated, and prone to injury. She said they responded positively to the treatment and care they received in the last weeks. At the sanctuary, they will receive specialised care tailored to their needs and finally be able to recover in peace. The team at Lionrock Big Cat Sanctuary prepared four interconnected enclosures for the new arrivals. This will allow their monitoring and grouping according to their gender and behaviour. “All Four Paws’ sanctuaries have a strict no-breeding policy, therefore the male lions will be vasectomised. The priority is to provide the lions with the care they need and help them recover from the ordeal of the last months,” Daniels said. She said the lions symbolised a need for change in how humans treat animals. Four Paws CEO and president Josef Pfabigan said more and more conflicts arise in the world, causing humanitarian crises but also posing a threat to captive animals dependent on human care. “We work globally not only to rescue wild animals from cruel and dangerous conditions, but also to prevent their suffering in the first place …” he said. https://www.iol.co.za/dailynews/news/11-lions-rescued-from-sudan-find-home-at-sa-cat-sanctuary-af2097ea-83e7-43fd-819a-1bddad8c9d7a

2024 driver line-up is identical to last year: for the first time in the history of the world championship, every team and driver is set to remain unchanged from one season to the next. We already know that won’t be the case in 2025, with news of Lewis Hamilton’s impending deal with Ferrari and more than half of seats currently available. Although several contracts did expire at the end of 2023, all of those have been extended by at least a year. Drivers at risk of being dropped managed a late surge in form, including Williams‘ Logan Sargeant who was out-qualified and out-scored by Alex Albon at every round, but picked himself up from a series of errors to finish tenth in Austin and pick up his first point. Back in America for the Las Vegas Grand Prix, he qualified seventh. Another driver who dipped in form was Sergio Perez who won two of the first four races, then lost an alarming amount of ground to team-mate Max Verstappen, who was often leading comfortably while Perez scrapped in the midfield. But he too, recovered towards the end of the year and secured his seat. Elsewhere, AlphaTauri renamed itself Visa Cash App RB but retained Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo, with Liam Lawson left on the sidelines despite impressing as a stand-in for the injured Ricciardo. Similarly, Mercedes, Haas and Alfa Romeo — now known as Stake F1 confirmed that their line-ups would remain unchanged. Ahead of the start of the season, Oscar Piastri, Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc have signed contract extensions. https://www.motorsportmagazine.com/articles/single-seaters/f1/2023-f1-driver-line-ups-latest-news-and-rumours-for-next-season-2/

ne sunny day in 2017, Kate Jackson, then 61, took a wooden wool-spinning wheel into her garden. She propped her iPad against a brick, pressed record and started talking as she spun – about crafts, the countryside, her menagerie of animals (cats, chickens, bees and Eileen the goose). Jackson enjoyed watching videos about gardening and quilting on YouTube, so one day she thought: how hard can it be? “I made a resolve to upload once a week.” She called her channel The Last Homely House, “which is a place to feel comfortable, secure and welcomed. That’s what I wanted my channel to be.” It now has 123,000 subscribers. Last May, Jackson – who lives in rural Northumberland – set up a sister channel, called The Last Homely Garden. She has an online shop, nearly 40,000 Instagram followers, and even a fan-run Facebook group. She has become the linchpin of a thriving online community. Thirteen years ago, after an unexpected divorce and with her three children adults, Jackson found herself living alone. “It was not a future I’d planned,” she says. “I found it hard to reimagine myself.” She left her career as a midwife to focus on selling homemade crafts and teaching workshops, “but I was struggling financially”. Around this period, her best friend was diagnosed with, and then died from, motor neurone disease. “It was a dark time,” she says. Jackson escaped to New Zealand, where she travelled the country by bus. “I came back healed,” she says; ready to embrace a solo life and find peace in her home. Seeing how invested people are in what I’m doing has been an absolute joy By the time her village had decent broadband installed in 2017, she was ready to share her little world of artisan pastimes online. In Jackson’s videos, she chats while cooking, sewing, sorting fabrics. Sometimes, she will film a tutorial – but it’s always relaxed. Recently, she has been teaching her daughter-in-law, Anna, how to make a quilt. Jackson eschews polish; she doesn’t like scripting videos and never wears makeup. During one cooking video, she dropped the recipe for the dish she was making in the pan, but kept the mishap in the edit. Her audience loved it, she says. “The comment I get most often is: ‘It’s like sitting having a cup of tea with a friend.’” Most of her viewers are older American women, who adore this glimpse into English country life. But it’s more than that. “My daughter Martha said: ‘You’re a woman who lives on her own, rurally, and you’re fine.’ Quite often, people are on their own through divorce or death, and it overwhelms them. Whereas I enjoy my solitude and love being able to make my own decisions. I’m showing people it’s all right.” Her fans collectively call themselves “The Lime Green Sofa”, a concept from lockdown where Jackson imagined her viewers cosied together on an infinite settee. American fans made sofa badges to identify one another at a craft festival. In the UK, Jackson has had people professing their fandom, even “bursting into tears and hugging me. It’s always really friendly and lovely. But a little bit weird.” While she withholds her exact location, people have also managed to turn up on her doorstep. Online, there are “intrusive questions”. Jackson shares a lot. “But there has to be a point at which you say: ‘No, I’m not going to share this.’” Not least as it protects the privacy of her children and grandchildren. The Last Homely House has become a family endeavour in other ways, though. Her children and their partners are all creative and get involved by doing bits of work on the channel. They create illustrations, run the online shop, edit videos and photos, and sometimes appear on screen. “Seeing how invested they are in what I’m doing has been an absolute joy,” Jackson says. “It’s a collaboration between the people I love most in my life.” The channel’s success means Jackson is very busy, but she loves how she spends her time. This year will involve collaborations with YouTubers she once considered heroes, as well as visits to material factories. Success also brings security: “I’m financially independent in a way that never seemed possible when I was down, wondering when I’d sell my next quilt.” Sometimes she wishes she had started sooner. “But I had to have gone through all those difficult life stages,” she says. “I wouldn’t have appealed to the same people if I’d been younger. I’m doing the right thing, at the right time.” https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2024/feb/12/a-new-start-after-60-i-turned-my-homely-lifestyle-into-a-global-phenomenon

After several delays, the Committee for Pricing Petroleum Products decided to align prices with global trends. Diesel prices have risen to EGP 10 per litre from EGP 8.25. Octane prices have also been adjusted up by one pound. Octane 80 is now at EGP 11 per litre, up from EGP 10 per litre. Octane 92 is priced at EGP 12.50, up from EGP 11.50. Octane 95 raised to EGP 13.50, up from EGP 12.50. Additionally, the price of the 12.5-kilogram butane cylinder for domestic use will increase from EGP 75 to EGP 100. The decision will take effect at 3:00am on Friday. This move is attributed to the global oil price surge triggered by the conflict in Gaza, following the Russian-Ukrainian war, as stated by the committee. This marks the first fuel price hike in Egypt for 2024. The Committee last increased the prices of various octane grades in November 2023, while leaving diesel prices unchanged, marking the second adjustment of the year. Subsidies for octane, diesel, and other petroleum products have totalled approximately EGP 119.419 billion in the current budget, which commenced on 1 July 2023, with an increase of about EGP 61.325 billion. https://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContentP/3/519788/Business/Egypt-raises-fuel-prices-for-the-first-time-in-.aspx

Every year in February, Barcelona becomes the playing field of not just its iconic football club but also of several mobile phone companies that converge on the Spanish city for one of the biggest tech events of the world, the Mobile World Congress (MWC). For these few days, the city is the world's unofficial mobile capital, with brands vying with each other to showcase their best and brightest products and ideas. MWC 2024 was no different, with dozens of products, services and concepts being unveiled in Barcelona. The most spectacular product seen this year in Barcelona was not a mobile phone. It was something that actually might never hit the market, but it was so cool that folks were lining up to see it. This was Lenovo's ThinkBook Transparent Notebook. It is pretty much your standard notebook, except that its 17.3-inch microLED display is quite transparent. The display is transparent when the pixels are turned off and becomes opaque when you switch them on. That's not all, the 'keyboard' of the notebook is also a touch surface that you can sketch and write on if need be. It is super cool, but what is the utility? Well, rather limited, to be honest (why would we generally like to look at the world through a notebook display?), although you can literally look at something in front of you and sketch it, and when in transparent mode, the notebook can identify objects that you can see through that display. The display is also only 720p in resolution, a far cry from the super-high resolutions you see on many notebooks. Lenovo has no plans of making this product commercially yet, but it certainly has a wow factor to it, although, at the time of writing, it is more about style than substance. https://news.abplive.com/technology/gadgets/mwc-2024-recap-launch-best-top-xiaomi-14-ultra-honor-oneplus-watch-lenovo-thinkbook-mobile-world-congress-abpp-1669318

The Japanese developer Korg makes both hardware and software. The company has a lot of support for its iOS apps. Korg Gadget is particularly po[CENSORED]r. It’s a simplified form of a DAW that allows anyone to make music using a wide range of sweetspot gadgetized synths, drum machines, and effects. A longstanding weakness of Gadget is the lack of AUv3 support on iOS. A format that is becoming a must-have on iOS and allows musicians to use plugins from other developers in DAWs. With the introduction of Logic Pro on iOS and Cubasis, AUv3 has become indispensable for mobile musicians.NAMM 2024 is around the corner, and it’s the music tech show at which Korg always shows new products. The first is Korg Gadget 3. It is a major update for the iOS, macOS, and Windows versions. However, the Windows version still only consists of the plugins. No standalone app.Gadget in version 3 remains true to the po[CENSORED]r concept. A simplified form of a DAW packed with small synthesizers, effects, etc., better known as gadgets. Version 3 introduces two new gadgets. Santa Ana is a new sample-based rhythm guitar virtual instrument, and Sydney is a flexible loop sampler with time stretch. Then, you work with five new effects (IFX), including 8-band EQ, transient shaper, stereo image, auto pumper, and a pitch shifter. The biggest news for iOS users is AUv3 support. This major new feature unlocks the Gadgets instruments from the Gadget ecosystem and makes them available in other apps. For example, owners of all Gadgets will get 40+ new virtual instruments that they can now use not only in KG3 but also in apps such as Logic Pro, AUM, and others. That’s a big step forward. Important, apps that are gadgetized versions of its big version like iPolysix, MS-20… are not available yet as AUv3. Korg also promises that the new Gadget 3 workflow is easier and more intuitive, thanks to optimizations. A new Play page also brings an easy-to-use arpeggiator and a chord function. Besides this, you can explore a new sound browser that lets you select Gadgets by the timbre you want. If you unlock the complete Gadget Instrument collection, it gives you access to over 6,000 sound programs. Further, you get a new genre-select function that allows you to create songs from your favorite patterns. So, basically, it is a song mode that is built in now Gadget 3. A great addition, making it more flexible for composing. The biggest news for iOS users is AUv3 support. Hope this is the start of updates to your other po[CENSORED]r synth apps. The new Gadget 3 update has many nice additions, especially the new effects are good to see. The new gadgets look interesting. But they don’t trigger the purchase button directly for me. Either way, a nice update for Gadget. Glad to see the project continues. One downer, the update price from Gadget 2 on Mac/PC is perhaps a bit too high. Korg Gadget 3 is available now for an introductory price of $249 instead of $299. It runs on macOS. The Gadget 3 plugins are available for an intro price of $149 instead of $199 and run on macOS and Windows. Upgrades are available for $99 for existing Korg Gadget 2 and plugin users. The iOS version of Korg Gadget 3 is available now for an intro price of $19,99. The new instruments are available via an in-app purchase for an intro price of $9,99. The update from 2.0 to 3.0 is free of charge for existing users on iOS. https://synthanatomy.com/2024/01/korg-gadget-3-two-new-gadgets-new-fxs-and-ios-auv3-support.html

Now that the year is almost over, system component manufacturers are preparing products for CES 2024, starting during the 2nd week of January. Phison has announced four products that it will showcase at its CES 2024 booth, including a new USB 4 controller, two new M.2 SSD controllers, and a prototype Gen 5 SSD featuring sequential read speeds that outperform the Best SSDs on the market today. The two memory controllers Phison announced include the PS5031-E31T and the PS5027-E27T. The former is a low-powered M.2 PCIe Gen 5 controller featuring maximum sequential read and write speed support of up to 10,800 MB/s and random read-write performance of up to 1,500,000 IOPS. The controller is built on TSMC's 7nm process featuring a 4-channel configuration, an ARM Coretex R5 CPU, AES 256 encryption, Phison's 7th Gen LDPC, and RAID ECC. SSD support includes a maximum capacity of up to 8TB and support for 3D TLC and QLC NAND flash. This new low-powered controller is designed to fill gaps in the market that the more powerful E26 controller can't serve. The low-powered nature of the new controller should enable it to work without the requirement of an SSD heatsink, which is very necessary for compact systems such as laptops and handheld gaming machines that cannot fit an SSD with a beefy heatsink. The latter is another low-power PCIe Gen 4 SSD controller aimed at the 2230 form factor M.2 SSDs designed for handheld gaming machines like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally. This controller sports TSMC's older 12nm process, featuring a 4-channel configuration and what Phison calls a "Single CPU Architecture." Similar to the PS5031-E31T, this Gen 4-designed PS5027-E27T controller features 8TB storage support and supports 3D TLC and QLC NAND flash.Sequential performance maxes out at up to 7,400MB/s for reads, and 6,700 MB/s for writes. Random performance tops out at 1,200,000 IOPS for both reads and writes. For reference, these specifications only disclose what the controller is capable of, and do not represent the actual performance specifications of SSDs that might come with this controller. Phison will also demo its PS5026-E26 Max14um Gen5 SSD. Phison first showed off this drive a few months ago, touting it as the highest-performance client SSD to date. The drive performed at over 14GB/s in Crystal Disk Mark, making it faster than even the fastest consumer Gen 5 SSDs on the market today (like the Crucial T700). To hit these speeds, Phison used its E26 controller in conjunction with Micron 2400MT/s NAND flash, one of the only consumer memory chips to achieve these speeds. For cooling, Phison also went the extra mile and engineered a copper cooling system with two Frore Systems AirJet Minis. Phison's E26 controller has always been capable of achieving these speeds, but Phison wanted to remind people that speeds like this are possible. The biggest problem getting in the way of that is the lack of ultra-high speed 2400MT/s memory chips that are capable of saturating the E26 controller's bandwidth capabilities. But, now that 2400MT/s are ramping up in production, we should start seeing drives with speeds of 14GB/s shortly. Finally, Phison will unveil a new USB 4 memory controller dubbed the PS2251-21 (U21). Phison states that this is the world's first USB 4 single-chip solution for portable devices and unconventional form factors. The controller is capable of speeds of up to 4GB/s. https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/storage/phison-reveals-specs-for-new-usb-4-pcie-gen-5-ssd-hardware-more-details-at-ces-2024

On an average day about a dozen new games are released on Steam. And while we think that's a good thing, it can be understandably hard to keep up with. Potentially exciting gems are sure to be lost in the deluge of new things to play unless you sort through every single game that is released on Steam. So that’s exactly what we’ve done. If nothing catches your fancy this week, we've gathered the best PC games you can play right now and a running list of the 2024 games that are launching this year.Release: January 18 Developer: Night Eyes Interactive Here's a gorgeous, gory, hardcore sword fighter with an instagib twist. In First Cut a successful hit on your opponent will instantly kill them, but landing that hit is the whole challenge. Swords can be aimed, attacks can be blocked, and parrying can change the course of a fight. It's a simple premise with a lot of technique-oriented complexity, and will probably appeal to people who want a more hardcore take on Nidhogg. Local multiplayer is arguably the star attraction here, but there are also two game modes for solo players, as well as a range of bizarre bonus modes (laser swords, anyone?).No Case Should Remain Unsolved is a narrative-driven detective game with the atmosphere of a hard boiled crime novel. Retired Senior Inspector Jeon Gyeong is encouraged by a young cop to revisit a cold case concerning the disappearance of a little girl. Gyeong must rifle through her unreliable memories to connect various hidden truths, which takes the form of piecing together scattered, remembered testimonies. With a runtime of no more than three hours, No Case Should Remain Unsolved is all about the slow unfurling of disturbing truth, and it currently has an "overwhelmingly positive" ranking on Steam. This Early Access game is a first-person take on Aground, a fairly well-received crafting and mining RPG. Basically, a mysterious apocalypse has occurred and humanity is doomed to an eternal life underground. It's your job to (perhaps ill-advisedly) dig your way out of this subterranean prison to see whatever is going on up on the surface nowadays. To achieve this you'll need to bolster your base and construct a variety of machines to automate mining and refine resources. There are some pretty hectic looking creatures to be encountered down in the ground as well. This Early Access period is expected to last around a year; the core of the game is there, but the surface will be expanded over the coming months, as well as other additions and improvements. https://www.pcgamer.com/five-new-steam-games-you-probably-missed-january-22-2024/
