  1. Flaco on 60th and 5th Avenue, February 2, 2023. Credit: Benny Polatseck/Mayoral Photography Office Flaco, a Eurasian eagle-owl who escaped the Central Park Zoo last year and captured New Yorkers’ hearts, shocked fans last month when he died after colliding with an Upper West Side building. The beloved bird’s official cause of death has not been determined, according to a spokesperson for the Wildlife Conservation Society, which operates the zoo. But it has renewed discussion on the dangers for wildlife living and existing in the nation’s largest city. Last year, the city’s Parks Department sent 11 dead animals to the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation’s Wildlife Health Unit to reveal their cause of death. THE CITY obtained the 2023 necropsies of those animals via Freedom of Information request, and found many of the birds, mostly Red-tailed hawks, were poisoned by rodenticide. Although pesticides are restricted in the city’s public parks, birds still often eat rats who have consumed poison somewhere else — and they are often slower, and easier to grab, because of it. As such, rat poison has been a frequent cause of death for other animals, particularly birds, according to previous years’ necropsies Barry the owl, another beloved bird who died in 2021 after colliding with a Central Park Conservancy vehicle, was found with high traces of rat poison in her system that veterinarians believe could have impaired her flying. The Parks Department has restrictions on if and when it can use rodenticides in its parks; it is suspended during the nesting season, which runs February through August, and also whenever there is a breeding pair of birds of prey present in an area, according to a spokesperson. But the natural world still poses many dangers to wild animals. Last year, the Urban Park Rangers conducted 1,380 animal rescues across the city, according to Marc Sanchez, the deputy director of the rangers. The dangers in New York City are different for each type of animal. “The greatest threats to different bird species vary; for waterfowl, it tends to be trash and fishing line left near water bodies, leading to entanglement. Birds of prey are most endangered by rodenticides, while songbirds primarily suffer from human impacts,” Sanchez wrote. Last year, a coyote was found dead on a highway, likely struck by a vehicle. Turtles died in a pond during construction at a Queens park. And some of the birds, although later poisoned to death, had previously been shot. Cataloging the Corpses The 2023 list of animal causes of deaths sheds light on not just what killed the beasts, but what hazards they had to deal with in life. Last year, three Red-tailed hawks were found dead at Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn, according to the necropsy for one of the birds. (Only two of those birds appeared to have necropsies performed, however.) One female juvenile hawk was found in a garden bed in the park, with damage to her right leg likely caused by being previously shot with an air gun pellet, according to the report conducted last April. But it was the high concentration of rat poison that likely killed her, veterinarians wrote. Another red-tailed hawk was found at the bottom of the Monument Steps at the park months later, killed by rat poison, according to the necropsy. Up in The Bronx, a peregrine falcon was found dead near Jacobi Medical Center and brought to nearby Pelham Bay Park. A necropsy found it died of the Avian flu. A Red-tailed hawk was found dead at Orchard Beach parking lot in The Bronx, its body emaciated, its necropsy found. Experts ruled the cause was starvation. An adult Cooper’s hawk was found on the Crotona Malls near the parkway, with blunt impact determined as its cause of death — although it had also previously been shot by an air pellet rifle, her necropsy found. It’s not clear if the hawk had been struck by a car. An adult female coyote was found dead near the High Bridge, likely due to a vehicle strike, veterinarians found. Coyotes aren’t totally uncommon across New York City, and prey on the smaller animals present throughout the five boroughs to survive. The necropsy for this coyote, estimated to be around a year and a half old, found raccoon hairs, bones, and claws inside her stomach. She was sent to the DEC for a necropsy and to also possibly contribute to genetic research, according to her report. In Queens, an after-hatch male Merlin falcon was found dead on the beach in Arverne, with rodenticide as its cause of death. Queens was also the final resting place of several turtles at Bowne Park Pond in Flushing. A necropsy was formed on one Florida soft-shell turtle, whose death was ruled a bacterial infection, particularly shell rot disease, according to its necropsy. The Urban Park Rangers who sent the turtle up for examination noted its death could be related to ongoing construction at the park — which a spokeswoman noted is working to improve conditions at the pond for other turtles In Manhattan, a Red-tailed hawk was found dead in the parking lot of Tavern on the Green in Central Park, with blood around its beak and mouth. Rodenticide was listed as the cause of death, and two rat feet and whiskers were still present in the bird’s intestines. Another female Red-tailed hawk was found on a walking path in the park, also killed by rat poison. And finally, just outside the park, a Red-tailed hawk was found dead on the steps of the Museum of the City of New York. Although its ultimate cause of death was not determined, the young male bird did have “potentially lethal levels” of rodenticide. The veterinarians also didn’t rule out a possible bacterial infection, according to the necropsy. https://www.thecity.nyc/2024/03/25/turtles-hawks-coyotes-animal-deaths-nyc-23/

  3. Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo's injury has forced Al Nassr to cancel its two-game China tour. However, the Portuguese forward was even more displeased with his 8th China tour due to the behavior of event organizers. The 38-year-old was even asked to play despite his injury, according to China News Weekly. Al-Nassr were scheduled to play Shanghai Shenhua on January 24 and Zhejiang four days later in Shenzhen, with both games now postponed due to Ronaldo's physical issues, tour organizers announced on Tuesday. At a press conference on Tuesday night, Ronaldo said: "I apologize to all Chinese fans. As you know, in football, there are things that cannot be controlled. I know everyone is sad, and I am too." However, other statements within the past few days have meant a disappointing end to his 8th trip to China, a country he calls a "second home." The organizers of the matches, SPORT17 and GHY Culture & Media, despite his knowledge, continued to publicly claim that Ronaldo would play in the matches. They even tried to persuade him to "play for the fans" on one public occasion which left him quite dissatisfied, China News Weekly reported. Al Nassr FC disclosed Ronaldo's injury on January 19. Many fans then questioned whether Ronaldo could play in subsequent China tour matches, according to an insider linked to GHY Culture & Media. The organizers, however, claimed during a live broadcast on the team's arrival at Shenzheng Airport that Ronaldo would participate in all the matches of the Al-Nassr China tour despite some physical conditions, and said it was not uncommon for a professional athlete to experience some pain during regular training. It was not until Tuesday night, just one day before the match against Shanghai Shenhua, that the organizers announced that Ronaldo had suffered a muscle injury which ruled him out, and led to Al Nassr postponing the tour. The insider believed the organizers concealed the information because they were worried about ticket sales. "The schedule of Al-Nassr's China tour was finalized last year, and the promotion surrounding Ronaldo was also released early. But if the organizer publicly said that Ronaldo could not play before the game, who would buy tickets?" The Portuguese star was also unhappy with the banquet he attended on Monday, which became a trending topic on Weibo with the hashtag "Cristiano Ronaldo toasted." The organizers sold a large number of seats of this event to buyers mainly being Internet celebrities. Many of them profited through ways such as live streaming with the presence of Ronaldo, who was bothered with demands for autographs and photos, and live streaming throughout the entire dinner. https://www.shine.cn/sport/2401252421/

  5. Trade ministers unanimously welcomed both WTO membership deals, which were approved at the MC13 opening ceremony attended by President Azali Assoumani of Comoros and President José Ramos-Horta of Timor-Leste. UAE's Minister of State for Foreign Trade and MC13 Chair Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi and Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala also attended the ceremony. The two Protocols of Accession were officially signed at the end of the ceremony. In her address to ministers, DG Okonjo-Iweala paid special tribute to the governments of both countries for “this historic achievement” and for having undertaken an extensive programme of domestic reforms to accelerate economic growth despite very challenging circumstances. She said: “I am delighted to say that we are kicking off this meeting with some excellent news. Here at MC13, the WTO is welcoming its first new members in almost eight years: Timor-Leste and Comoros. We celebrate the hard work they have put in, and the beneficial but challenging reforms they have implemented at home. Both countries are least developed countries, and we are excited to see them reap the gains of membership as they become new members of the WTO.” Her full statement is here. Twenty-two more countries are seeking to follow in their footsteps — many of them were present in Abu Dhabi, including a sizeable contingent from the Arab world. Comoros and Timor-Leste will bring the total number of WTO members to 166. “We look forward to adding to that number in the years ahead,” said Director-General Okonjo-Iweala. President Assoumani said: “Comoros' accession to the WTO will be immensely beneficial for our entire economy, for public and private enterprises, and for consumers. It will contribute to our country's trade diversification and partnership efforts, to its integration into regional, continental and global value chains. Through WTO accession, my country will achieve its objectives.” His full statement is here. President Ramos-Horta said: “Being a WTO member is essential to unleash the potential of our economy in several sectors. We are committed to diversify our economy, become a part of the value chain of the global economy and to improve the life of our people through trade.” His full statement is here. Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi said: “The decisions we have just taken on the accession of Comoros — an island LDC in Africa — and the accession of Timor-Leste — an island LDC in Asia — testify to the world's confidence in the WTO and the multilateral trading system. I strongly believe that through their future membership in the WTO, Comoros and Timor-Leste will have stable and predictable frameworks for economic engagement with other nations which will boost trade, growth and prosperity.” Both governments will now submit their Protocols for ratification by their legislative assemblies. In keeping with WTO rules, Comoros and Timor-Leste will become members of the WTO 30 days following the deposit of the respective instruments of acceptance of the Protocol. Comoros' Working Party was established on 9 October 2007. Members of the Working Party concluded the negotiations on 9 January 2024. The list of Comoros’s commitments is available here. Timor-Leste's Working Party was established on 7 December 2016. Members of the Working Party concluded the negotiations Link:https://www.wto.org/english/news_e/news24_e/acc_26feb24_e.htm
  6. raveling can suck. Full stop. Between dealing with a sniffly seatmate on a long-haul flight or getting stranded in a foreign country with a dead phone, there's no shortage of things that can go wrong when hitting the road. Trust me, I've had my fair share of travel hiccups over the past couple of decades (think: a 10-hour flight sans headphones!), which is why I've made it my mission to hunt down every genius travel gadget out there to keep chaos at bay. For you, but also for me. So, if you've got vacation plans coming up, I highly recommend you keep reading. Because you might be surprised by the sheer amount of gear just waiting to change your life—and travel style—forever. I included some picks you've probably heard of before, like the Apple AirTag and Kindle, along with some niche finds you definitely didn't know you needed. The best part? Many of them are small enough to toss in your tote bag, so you'll be able to whip 'em out whenever you're on the move. And believe me, everyone will be asking where you got them. https://www.cosmopolitan.com/lifestyle/g60268665/best-travel-gadgets/
  7. Garmin has published its first software update for the Forerunner 165, just over a month after releasing the smartwatch. Typically, the company tests new features and bug fixes on its Beta Program, as has recently been the case with the Venu 2, Venu 2S and Venu 2 Plus. However, Garmin has not even added the Forerunner 165 to its Beta Program yet. Instead, the update has landed through the company's stable software distribution channel. In a forum post, Garmin explains that Software Version 9.24 can be downloaded through Garmin Express or Garmin Connect Mobile (GCM). With that being said, the post implies that the software will be issued in batches, as often happens with Garmin software releases. If that is the case, then it should be possible to trigger Software Version 9.24 to start downloading manually by heading to the main menu on the Forerunner 165, followed by Settings, System and then Software Update. According to the same post, Software Version 9.24 makes 18 changes from the smartwatch's launch software, including 11 bug fixes. The full changelog for Software Version 9.24 is as follows: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Garmin-announces-first-software-update-for-new-smartwatch-with-fresh-features-and-bug-fixes.819807.0.html
  8. Blaze Entertainment has released an updated roadmap for its Evercade line of consoles for 2024, and it looks like the company has some exciting plans for the rest of the year. The roadmap starts by highlighting the previously announced Piko Interactive Collection 2 and Sunsoft Collection 2 (both of which are scheduled to be released in April) before moving on to tease a further 8 unannounced collections to be released throughout the year. The first batch of these unannounced collections will drop in July, with the second scheduled to land in September, the third in November, and the fourth in December. These releases will take the total number of cartridges released in 2024 up to 12 (with Indie Heroes Collection 3 and THEC64 Collection 3 having also been released earlier this year in February). At the moment, it's not exactly known what any of these are, but in a recent press release, Blaze stated "There's been a lot of work behind the scenes in getting even bigger and better licenses, franchises, and games for Evercade...". More information is expected soon. Worth noting is that, besides these new collections, Blaze has also added four unannounced hardware options for Evercade to the updated roadmap. These are slated to be released in both July and November. Again, nothing is known about these yet and what they actually are, but we've been told to expect more news in the coming months. Do you have any thoughts on what these mystery announcements could be? Let us know in the comments! https://www.timeextension.com/news/2024/03/new-evercade-2024-roadmap-teases-more-game-collections-and-hardware
  9. the next game from Celeste and Towerfall studio Extremely OK Games, is technically not delayed, because it didn't have a release date in the first place. We did expect it to be out this year, though, and the developers expected to at least have a firm launch date in place by now—but instead, Extremely OK director Maddy Thorson said in a new blog post that "this game ain't coming out in 2024." Development of Earthblade is progressing, and the studio is "still excited to work on it," but settling on a release date at this point "just isn't in the cards," Thorson wrote. "We know that this will be disappointing for a lot of you and we're sorry for that. Maybe this was predictable, but still it always sucks when the haters are right." This isn't the first time Earthblade has been semi-sort-of delayed. In 2022, Thorson expressed hope for a release in 2023 "after some form of (private) beta test, polishing, localization, and of course the dreaded console certification," but that didn't work out either. To help keep things moving forward, the studio has also hired a new designer, Kyle Pulver, a "veteran indie developer" who's also apparently the Towerfall world champion and a hidden character in the game. "Kyle quickly approached us with big ideas, which can be scary for everyone involved," Thorson wrote. "But it was clear that he's not here to derail the project. He's identifying our vision and the problems preventing the game from living up to it, and working with us to pinpoint solutions. Plus his fresh eyes have inspired all of us to see things anew." Announced in 2021, Earthblade is an exploration-action set in a "seamless pixel art world" that follows the adventures of an "enigmatic child of Fate" who returns from some unspecified absence to explore the ruins of Earth and piece together its fractured history. It's available for wishlisting on Steam and you can take a look at the reveal trailer from the 2022 Game Awards below: Andy has been gaming on PCs from the very beginning, starting as a youngster with text adventures and primitive action games on a cassette-based TRS80. From there he graduated to the glory days of Sierra Online adventures and Microprose sims, ran a local BBS, learned how to build PCs, and developed a longstanding love of RPGs, immersive sims, and shooters. He began writing videogame news in 2007 for The Escapist and somehow managed to avoid getting fired until 2014, when he joined the storied ranks of PC Gamer. He covers all aspects of the industry, from new game announcements and patch notes to legal disputes, Twitch beefs, esports, and Henry Cavill. 12. A man carries breads on his head along a busy street near a banner for Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi from the campaign titled “Alashan Tabneeha” (So You Can Build It) after election results in Cairo, Egypt, April 3, 2018. © 2018 Reuters/Amr Abdallah Dalsh In no conversation with Egyptians in recent months can one avoid hearing how the prices of basic food and commodities are rapidly rising on daily basis, sometimes changing literally while someone is in the shop. In recent weeks, the foreign currency crisis has pushed the exchange rate in the black market to exceed double the official rate of 31 pounds per $1 USD. Millions of Egyptians’ economic and social rights, including to food and an adequate standard of living, have been in jeopardy due to inflation that hit a 40 percent record in recent months. This is all just the tip of the iceberg of Egypt’s soaring and protracting economic and financial crisis. Even worse, there seems to be no plausible way out. While the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza has diverted some attention from the dire crisis in Egypt, President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi’s government has resorted to what it does best: desperate, time-buying tactics, without addressing the root causes of the crisis, spiraling into a self-perpetuating cycle of failure. This was the case, for example, when the government, sensing the visibly escalating public discontent, anxiously moved up presidential elections to December 2023 ahead of the usual date in March 2024, even though no figure or group was ever given the chance to fairly contest the election. In January, the parliament swiftly approved government-proposed legislation that will give the military, the de-facto ruler of the country, further power to prosecute civilians in military courts in wide ranging economy-related offenses and whatever other offenses the president deems to be undermining “national security requirements,” adding to the pile of abusive laws and courts use to punish dissent, extort wealth, and pressure large businesses to give the military part of their proceeds. But Al-Sisi has recently appeared nervous. On September 30, drawing a parallel to the Great Chinese Famine that killed millions in the 20th Century, Al-Sisi literally told Egyptians that it is acceptable for them to face famine or die of hunger to achieve his vision of development. The reason he appears nervous is that the very premise of Al-Sisi’s rule has been crumbling in front of his eyes. When Al-Sisi rose to power on the heels of a military coup he orchestrated in 2013, he implied in multiple statements that Egyptians would need to give up their civil and political freedoms as he focused on bringing about prosperity and development. Al-Sisi has always spoken as if economic and social rights are at odds with political rights and civil liberties, and that peaceful protests and expression are generally conspiracies that only bring chaos. Ten years after the military coup and nine years into his presidency, Al-Sisi’s distorted world view unsurprisingly never came to fruition. His government has violently quashed peaceful dissent and annihilated many basic freedoms, in ways that are far worse than any autocracy in Egypt’s recent history, while the promises of prosperity and development are little more than a mirage, and poverty under Al-Sisi’s rule has only increased. While Al-Sisi clearly seems aware of the depth of the economic crisis, his statements have mostly revolved around absolving himself from responsibility, blaming external factors, and scolding Egyptians for their democratic aspirations and the 2011 revolt that brought about the end of 30 years of President Hosni Mubarak’s autocratic rule. Joining a long list of autocrats who view development not as an unalienable human right, but as a benefit or a gift from the ruler to people, he has repeatedly told Egyptians that the solution is to continue to sacrifice their rights and be patient otherwise criticism and opposition can “destroy the country.” This is happening even though his government has received billions of dollars in generous support from his rich Saudi and UAE benefactors and large loans and technical assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, and others. Rather than such tremendous support leading to concrete reforms, these loans have become mostly a burden for generations to come as, according to Bloomberg, Egypt is more at risk of debt crises than any other country in the world besides Ukraine. And while more Egyptians suffer to secure their basic needs, Al-Sisi has embarked on lavish vanity projects that he himself has at times acknowledged lacked feasibility studies and that he nevertheless has pushed to boost Egyptians’ “morale.” Numerous studies show how Al-Sisi’s military has expanded its enormous invasion of consumer markets, benefiting from an uneven playing field and a lack of civilian oversight or scrutiny, leading to corruption and squandering of public assets. This has been one of the main issues that remain insufficiently addressed, including in the currently stumbling $3 billion IMF loan. Moreover, Al-Sisi’s government, with the support of the IMF, has removed many food and fuel subsidies without sufficient measures to scale up the country’s social security system and mitigate the harm. Currently, social assistance cash transfer programs hardly cover a third of the 60 million people living near or in poverty out of the 100-million po[CENSORED]tion. The cash assistance has also increasingly lost its purchasing power to inflation. Egypt’s economic crisis is deep and multifaceted, but it is also in many ways the product of a political deadlock in which a military-backed, unaccountable system of governance has crushed prospects of peaceful rotation of power. Al-Sisi has intentionally refused to create a political party or head one of the pro-Sisi parties that dominate his subservient parliament. Instead, he relies on naked coercion and the military and security services as his main vehicles of control. The reason is that he has been seeking to avoid what he perceives to be Mubarak’s mistake of ruling through a political party that instituted business oligarchy and cronyism. Al-Sisi instead focused on dismantling the state’s independent institutions and enhancing coup-proofing mechanisms while relying almost entirely on the military to run the country. In return, the military has entrenched its rule as a political and economic player in unprecedented ways, including by introducing constitutional and legal amendments that make it the main custodian of political life and allow the generals to accumulate more wealth in opaque military businesses. But this leaves the military in the uncomfortable position of receiving a significant share of public anger for failed economic policies in a vacuum of political alternatives. Anecdotal evidence shows that the level of public dissatisfaction with Al-Sisi after nine years in power is reminiscent of what Mubarak needed 30 years to accumulate. Al-Sisi’s government still seeks external support and validation as a means of survival. Blown-up regional events have multiple times helped Al-Sisi’s government since 2013 as his benefactors in Western governments have frequently favored short-sighted solutions for the rising security challenges and migration across the Mediterranean over human rights and democracy. Concurrently, this is the case for reported new and ongoing deals that may go forward soon, with the European Union, IMF and/or World Bank, as Al-Sisi is still betting on the same old tactics, using Egypt’s size and geopolitical leverage, albeit weakened, to convince Western capitals to pour more financial assistance on the backdrop of regional crises and wars such as in Gaza, Sudan and Libya. But these all cannot be more than time-buying tactics. This applies also to the vague $35 billion investment deal with the United Arab Emirates which the government celebrated in late February as a “victory”. While such politically-motivated support has proven to only increase the leverage of Gulf allies on Egypt’s ruling class with little or no actually sustained gains for millions of Egyptians. Some contend that the countdown for a social and/or political explosion has already begun. But what is certain is that Al-Sisi has watered the seeds of his own failure. By trampling on the rule of law, independence of state institutions, and the free press, he has destroyed the very pillars needed for building a strong economy based on accountability and favorable environment that can attract strong investments rather than barely get by on unsustainable loans. It is also very unlikely that Al-Sisi will reverse course as his government has shown little to no capacity for self-reflection or reform. His government has been fearful of the slightest political opening snowballing, and it has frequently resorted to coercion to keep the lid on, which in turn creates more grievances and makes reform prospects, harder and harder. In many ways, Al-Sisi has caged himself in. The longer Al-Sisi continues to rob the country of its potential, the more the danger to long-term stability in Egypt and the higher the price that must be paid to repair the future. https://www.hrw.org/news/2024/02/26/egypts-al-sisi-has-caged-himself
  13. NEW DELHI: The Calcutta High Court, on Thursday, called on the state to rename the lioness named 'Sita' and a lion named 'Akbar' and asked who had given this name, causing controversy. The court was hearing a petition by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) to change the name of the lioness, Live Law reported. The court asked the state government's lawyer whether he would name his pet after a Hindu God, or Muslim Prophet, or freedom fighter or nobel laureate. "These are the uncontroversial names. Will you name a lion after a Hindu deity, a Muslim prophet, or Christian god, or freedom fighter, or a nobel laureate? Generally, anyone who is revered or respected by the people of our country?" the bench orally remarked. BY TABOOLA SPONSORED LINKS YOU MAY LIKE Man Who Predicted Bitcoin Says “This is Bigger” Visionary Profit A single-judge bench of Justice Saugata Bhattacharya had earlier directed the State counsel to obtain instructions on whether the pair of lions brought in from Tripura Zoo were named 'Akbar' and 'Sita' by the West Bengal Zoo authorities. Justice Bhattacharya orally expressed strong views on the 'controversial names' given to the pair of animals. He remarked, "Who has given this name? Causing controversy? I was thinking whether any animal can be given a name after a god, mythological hero, freedom fighter, or Nobel laureate. You are a welfare state and it is a secular state. Why should you draw controversy by naming a lion after Sita and Akbar?" The judge said that this controversy could be avoided. He further stated that Sita and even naming a lion 'Akbar' is not good. Praising Akbar, Bhattacharya said if the naming was already done, the state authority should shun it and avoid it. 14. Rabat - Neo Motors CEO Nassim Belkhayat and NamX President Faouzi Annajah presented a model of the first Moroccan car brand and a hydrogen-powered vehicle prototype to King Mohammed VI during a ceremony on Monday at the Royal Palace in Rabat. The projects, developed by Moroccan entrepreneurs, are a significant milestone for the country and will strengthen the “Made In Morocco” label and establish the country as a competitive hub for automotive production. During the presentation, the King examined the model from the “Neo Motors” car, a company owned by Moroccan capital, as well as the prototype of the hydrogen vehicle created by NamX, called the Hydrogen Utility Vehicle (HUV). Neo Motors is currently in the process of opening an industrial complex in Ain Aouda, located in the Rabat-Sale-Kenitra Region. The plan is dedicated to manufacturing vehicles for both the local market and for export. The plant is projected to have an annual production capacity of 27,000 units. It was constructed under a budget of MAD 156 million ($15 million) and is expected to create 580 jobs. In February 2023, the National Agency for Road Safety granted final approval for Neo Motors’ first vehicle. The company launched pre-production, with the plant’s inauguration scheduled for June 2023. As for NamX's hydrogen-powered vehicle, the car was designed in collaboration with Italian design office and coachbuilder Pininfarina. The interior design of the vehicle is Moroccan. The HUV model will be equipped with a central hydrogen tank, complemented by six removable capsules to deliver a high driving range and facilitate quick hydrogen refueling in a few minutes. On the sidelines of the ceremony, King Mohammed VI honored Nassim Belkhayat and Annajah with the Wissam Al Kafaa Al Fikria Award. Faouzi Annajah is a Morocco-French businessman who co-created the world’s first car partially powered by a patented removable hydrogen tank system. NamX’s patented technology consists of a fixed hydrogen tank and six removable capsules. Set to be released in 2025, NamX responds to the rising demand for hydrogen and hybrid cars amid an increasingly prevailing shift towards clean energy sources and decarbonization worldwide. As for Nassim Belkhayat, the Moroccan entrepreneur created Neo Motors, the first 100% Moroccan car company, in 2018. While the automotive sector continues to exceed growth expectations, the country is working to transition to electric car manufacturing to maintain its strong manufacturing position in the global transition to a greener economy. In September 2022, the country unveiled an ambitious industrial plan aiming to scale up electric car production capacity within two years. Under the plan, the country’s electric car production is set to reach 100,000 units annually in the span of two to three years, double the current production input. The ambitious production target is achievable in light of the current industrial capabilities without factoring in the possibility of attracting foreign investment in the future. Morocco’s ambition to emerge as a hub for electric car production is further consolidated by the country’s significant capacity in the field of green hydrogen production. Studies are increasingly pointing to the country’s potential in the production of green hydrogen. Green hydrogen is currently considered the best green replacement for oil. As the world transitions to a greener economy, demand for green hydrogen is expected to grow at an exponential rate. A January report from the European Conservatives indicated that Europe is already planning substantial investment budgets into green hydrogen and solar panels in Morocco, Egypt, and southern Africa. According to the report, the European Investment Bank estimates the value of Africa’s green hydrogen production capacity at a 1 trillion-euro investment. The continent is expected to reach an annual green hydrogen production capacity of 50 million tonnes by 2035 at a highly competitive price of or below $2 per kilogram. https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2023/05/355466/morocco-unveils-first-moroccan-car-brand-hydrogen-vehicle-nbsp-prototype
  15. Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended for one match for making an alleged offensive gesture during a Saudi Arabia league game while playing for Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League. After Al-Nassr defeated Riyadh rival Al-Shabab 3-2 on Sunday, video footage appeared to show Ronaldo cupping his ear and repeatedly thrusting his hand forward near his pelvis, in a gesture that seemed to be aimed at Al-Shabab fans. Background chants of “Messi,” referencing Ronaldo’s longstanding soccer rival Lionel Messi, could be heard. The Disciplinary and Ethics Committee of the Saudi Arabia Football Federation (SAFF) committee announced the ban on social media early Thursday morning local time. Al-Nassr’s next league game is at home to Al-Hazm on Thursday. The former Real Madrid and Manchester United star will also have to pay a fine of 20,000 Saudi Riyals ( $5,333) to Al-Shabab, to cover the costs of the club filing the complaint, and half of that amount to the federation. The committee said that the decision was not open to appeal. While the incident was not captured by television cameras, the actions of Ronaldo, who scored a first-half penalty in the game, were widely criticized in Saudi Arabia by former players and commentators. According to reports in the Saudi Arabia media, the 39-year-old told the committee that the gesture was one of victory and common in Europe. It is not the first time that the Portuguese forward has been at the center of controversy since joining Al-Nassr. Last April, upon leaving the field after a game against Al-Hilal, Ronaldo appeared to grab his genitals as fans chanted Messi’s name. On that occasion, Al-Nassr said that the forward had sustained a groin injury in the match. Ronaldo, who moved to the Riyadh-based club in December 2022, has a league-leading 22 goals. His scored the opener against Al Shabab, a first-half penalty. Al Nassr is also in the quarterfinals of the Asian Champions League, a tournament it has never won. https://www.clickorlando.com/sports/2024/02/29/cristiano-ronaldo-suspended-for-one-match-over-alleged-offensive-gesture-in-saudi-league-game/
  16. Significant areas of Greenland’s melted ice sheet are now producing vegetation, risking increased greenhouse gas emissions, rising sea levels and instability of the landscape. A study has documented the change since the 1980s and shows that large areas of ice have been replaced with barren rock, wetlands and shrub growth, creating a change in environment. Analysis of satellite records has shown that over the past three decades an estimated 11,000 sq miles of Greenland’s ice sheet and glaciers have melted, an area equivalent to the size of Albania and amounting to 1.6% of its total ice cover. As ice has retreated, the amount of land with vegetation growing on it has increased by 33,774 sq miles, more than twice the area covered when the study began. The findings show a near-quadrupling of wetlands across Greenland, which are a source of methane emissions. The greatest increase in dense wetland vegetation occurred in the vicinity of Kangerlussuaq in the south-west and in isolated areas in the north-east. The scientists say warmer air temperatures are causing the ice to retreat and since the 1970s the region has been heating up at double the global average rate. On Greenland, the average annual air temperatures between 2007 and 2012 were 3C warmer than the average between 1979 and 2000. According to the findings, there are signs that the increased vegetation is resulting in further ice loss. Jonathan Carrivick, an Earth scientist at the University of Leeds and a co-author of the study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, said: “We have seen signs that the loss of ice is triggering other reactions which will result in further loss of ice and further ‘greening’ of Greenland, where shrinking ice exposes bare rock that is then colonised by tundra and eventually shrub. “At the same time, water released from the melting ice is moving sediment and silt, and that eventually forms wetlands and fenlands.”Dr Michael Grimes, the lead author of the report, said: “The expansion of vegetation, occurring in tandem with the retreat of glaciers and the ice sheet, is significantly altering the flow of sediments and nutrients into coastal waters. “These changes are critical, particularly for the Indigenous po[CENSORED]tions whose traditional subsistence hunting practices rely on the stability of these delicate ecosystems. Moreover, the loss of ice mass in Greenland is a substantial contributor to global sea level rise, a trend that poses significant challenges both now and in the future.” The researchers have used their findings to develop a model to predict those areas on Greenland that are likely to experience “marked and accelerated” change in the future, to continue monitoring the situation. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/feb/13/flourishing-vegetation-greenland-ice-sheet-alarm-climate-crisis
  17. As Ramadan 2024 approaches, the question of whether the crescent moon has been seen or not becomes a lively debate for Muslims worldwide as well as astronomers. It's thought that people will be out looking for the moon either on Sunday, March 10, or Monday, March 11, to determine the start of Ramadan 2024. Early signs suggest that Ramadan 2024 will start on March 12 and one Birmingham mosque has already produced a timetable of prayer and meal times based on this date. However, in Saudi Arabia, the holy month of fasting might begin a day earlier, as their national calendar marks March 11 as the starting point. The issue has gained so much momentum that Noor TV, a Birmingham-based channel watched in over 180 countries, holds regular announcements on when each of the Islamic months will begin. The Islamic broadcaster has its own moonsighting board and is part of a nationwide network of organisations that work together to agree on dates. READ MORE: When last 10 days of Ramadan 2024 will be including key date for Laylat al-Qadr Birmingham Ramadan markets to have 'nightly police patrols' for the first time Dr Zahid Nawaz, a Midlands-based moonsighting spokesperson and former adviser to the British Science Association, has been part of these announcements for over 25 years. He explains that decisions are made once they're sure the crescent moon has been sighted in a location that aligns with the UK time zone. This could be either the UK itself or its closest Islamic neighbour, Morocco. Dr Nawaz told BirminghamLive: "We do rely on astronomical calculations as a secondary source. However, these calculations are purely a prediction and cannot be treated as reality, because reality only manifests itself naturally when the crescent moon is actually sighted. "I can predict that this year we are likely to have two dates for Ramadan as some Muslims follow Saudi announcements whilst others rely on actual verified moonsighting in their own or nearby locations. There is no possibility of receiving and verifying any credible moonsighting reports on March 10, 2024, as the moon's angular position and height above the horizon is not sufficient for it be to seen in our designated zones. "With this in mind, Noor TV and its moonsighting board led by Pir Noor ul Arifeen Siddiquee will be deliberating in a live programme on the 10th but early indications are that Ramadan is likely to commence on March 12, 2024." He added that the practice of sighting the crescent moon should be fun and an enjoyable experience but has unfortunately become the subject of intense debate and disagreements. He said: "As I look ahead, I can see the younger generation who are well acquainted with scientific principles will reject the concept of following countries whose time zones do not match with the UK time zone." Here are the astronomical forecasts for the moon being sighted in locations including Saudi Arabia, Morocco and the UK. They indicate that it won't be possible to get a glimpse of the crescent on March 10 and this seems to confirm Ramadan starting on March 12. https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/whats-on/whats-on-news/ramadan-2024-moonsighting-update-uk-28738922
