https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/star-citizen-players-are-running-around-giving-each-other-drug-overdoses/ Star Citizen is like EVE Online in one way: It's fascinating to see what elements of the playerbase are getting up to in this semi-functioning, half-built galaxy. The game is infamous for its business model of expensive virtual spaceships that don't yet exist (I'm honestly surprised we haven't had Star Citizen NFTs yet), but those who believe in it do so with a passion and make the best of what there currently is. Or, in the case of the recently added med gun, make the worst of it for others. Star Citizen's 3.15 update, currently live on the public test server, adds this tool, which is intended to allow players to heal themselves and others. As it's not a weapon, it can be used within 'armistice' zones i.e. space stations. And it works by pumping players full of lovely health drugs. Only problem being, if you get too many drugs in your system, your character becomes incapacitated, swaying like they're drunk before collapsing to the floor. The med gun wars have begun: players are using them to grief others by 'healing' them to an incapacitated state, then merrily stripping the limp bodies and leaving them in nothing but underwear. Players can also team up to incapacitate others and then carry them around the station for a laugh. This is the space future we dreamed of! "So players usually spawn in a starting area," explains Star Citizen player xx-shalo-xx. "These areas are armistice zones, which block PvP. However 'healing' a player through a involuntarily needle injection isn't seen as PvP. You can see where this is going. Players spot a geared guy and bum rush him and stab him full. The player then actually overdoses and dies and the gear is yours for the taking. RECOMMENDED VIDEOS FOR YOU... This is some Space Station 13 levels of shenanigans." As with everything Star Citizen, there's an amusing split of opinion between people who just think this is ridiculous (it is) and those who insist Cloud Imperium can do no wrong and it's up to players to defend themselves. The latter is possible: taking a particular medication called Resurga will protect you from the med guns for an hour. But this hardly feels like something players should have to do to avoid griefing in a 'safe' zone. Here's an example of how it looks in practice, with this brave pilot being woozed-up by a rather scary looking cat thing. And it is definitely, definitely not funny that Star Citizen's space stations have turned into clinical landscapes filled with woozy pilots and stripped bodies. "I've had a couple of occasions now where bands of people go around and completely spawn camp the ship terminals, hiding in elevators and drugging people," writes SirToffee. "Then what happened? Well they then decided to camp at the clinic so poor old me in just my gown opened the door to 3 people waiting to drug me. This happened repeatedly and swapping server just put me back in the same one."

https://www.pcgamer.com/the-fixes-for-the-windows-11-bugs-that-were-hurting-amd-ryzen-performance-are-now-live/ Fixes for two Windows 11 performance issues discovered at the beginning of October are now available for download. The bugs hindered the performance of some Ryzen CPUs after upgrading to Windows 11. AMD just put up an update on its knowledge base blog, flagging both items as "issue solved; solution available." YOUR NEXT UPGRADE (Image credit: Future) Best CPU for gaming: the top chips from Intel and AMD Best graphics card: your perfect pixel-pusher awaits Best SSD for gaming: get into the game ahead of the rest "As of October 21, 2021: Windows 11 update KB5006746 fully resolves the performance impact of Issue 1 described in this article," reads the blog post. "AMD Chipset Driver 3.10.08.506 fully resolves the performance impact of Issue 2 described in this article. AMD has verified that the performance and behavior of compatible AMD processors are working as intended on Windows 11 subsequent to the installation of these updates. AMD and Microsoft recommend that users promptly install this update on affected systems." Issue 1 was a problem with the measured and functional L3 cache latency nearly tripling on certain apps and games (meaning that the CPU was accessing its memory way too slowly). Issue 2 was with AMD's "Preferred Core" feature not working correctly. Preferred Core allows users to assign apps to the fastest core on the chip manually. The updates come now after first appearing last week in the Microsoft Insiders build of Windows 11. So, it was only a matter of time before both fixes became available. These AMD bugs were just one of a handful of launch-day bugs users have encountered during the Windows 11 rollout. A fix was in the works as soon as Microsoft and AMD confirmed the issues. The L3 fix should be available now as a Windows 11 software update under Microsoft Knowledgebase ID 5006746. Open up Windows Update, and you'll see it listed. The preferred core fix is available as an AMD Chipset Driver package update under version 3.10.08.506 within the Apps and Features interface of Windows 11.

https://www.techradar.com/news/the-best-early-black-friday-laptop-deals-are-at-dell-see-our-top-picks It may still be October but we're already starting to see some killer laptop deals that would rival anything over Black Friday. If you're after a brand new machine in this year's sale and are ready to buy now then you'll want to check out these early reductions on a range of Dell laptops – including one incredible value for money machine. Leading the way is this Dell Inspiron 15 3000 laptop for $699.99 (was $854.98), featuring an Intel i7 processor, 12GB RAM and 512GB SSD. We track loads of cheap laptop deals every week and it's practically impossible to find one at this price featuring all three of these top-end components at once. Let's be clear: this is one of the best Black Friday laptop deals out there right now. Altogether, you'll find this to be a fast, responsive and capable all-around machine for any task you want to throw at it. However, if you do want to spend a little less, you can choose to downgrade on a few components in order to save money and build a laptop that's better suited to your needs. We've picked out two more of these options for you below from these early Black Friday deals. The first is a mid-range choice for $499.99 (was $604.98) that has an i5 processor, 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD. That's still going to be an exceptional performer and excellent multitasker thanks to the processor and a healthy amount of RAM. The last is a budget option for $379.99 (was $534.98) that comes with an i3 processor, 8GB RAM and a 128GB SSD. While you definitely lose out on a fair chunk of speedy storage space here, the fact it keeps the 8GB of RAM will maintain a strong level of performance for general everyday browsing and some light work.

A 500-square-metre (598-square-yard) garment factory in the Seongbuk district of the capital Seoul was humming this week, green and pink thread flying off stacked spools off serger machines with loud knocking noises in a race to meet orders. ALSO READ |‘Squid Game’ has made tracksuits hot “October is usually a slow month for the sewing industry, but thanks to Squid Game and Halloween, we are scrambling to stitch,” factory owner Kim jin-ja, 54, told Reuters. “We are now sewing 6,000 teal-green tracksuits for toddlers and children. “Kim says her annual sales of 1.5 billion won ($1.27 million) plummeted to a third of what she used to make after the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Most of her orders came from Japan but travel restrictions forced her to shut down in August and September. She now hopes orders will last past Halloween and sees better chances of renewed exports with “Made in Korea” labels. The South Korean garment industry had been in decline even before the pandemic with higher wage levels making it difficult to compete with China, Vietnam or Indonesia. Of the 2,144 manufacturing businesses in Seongbuk, 70% – or 1,510 – are apparel companies, Seoul Fashion Textile Sewing Association chairman Oh Byung-yeol told Reuters. “The two years of COVID have been a tough time for domestic fashion corporations,” said Seongbuk Mayor Lee Seung-ro. “(But) Squid Game, which has become a global sensation, has also made tracksuits po[CENSORED]r domestically, leading to a flood of orders. Squid Game has been watched by 142 million households since its Sept. 17 debut, according to Netflix, the world’s largest streaming service, helping it add 4.38 million new subscribers. Many small business owners in South Korea recognised themselves in the cash-strapped characters of the wildly po[CENSORED]r thriller, who vie desperately for a chance to win $38 million, exposing a debt trap that is all too familiar.

https://www.techradar.com/news/google-meet-may-have-fixed-one-of-the-worst-things-about-video-conferencing A new update to Google Meet will finally end one of the worst things about workplace video calls. The video conferencing platform has announced it will soon allow hosts to turn off or mute the video feed and microphones of individual users on a group call. Affected users will be unable to turn their cameras or microphones back on manually, whether in a main room or a breakout call. Mute all In a blog post announcing the update, Google said that the change would allow for "smoother, more productive meetings". "This feature gives meeting hosts more control over their meetings by letting them decide when they want to allow different levels of participation from attendees, for example to address disruptive participants," it said. Back in February 2021, the company added a feature that allowed Google Meet hosts to mute all members of a call at once, for example if someone was presenting - but the new update blocks call participants from turning their audio or video feeds back on. Participants using versions of the Android and iOS apps that do not support audio and video locks will be removed from the meeting if the host or co-host turns on either of the locks. If they attempt to join a meeting that has either of these locks enabled they will be prompted to update their app or use another device to join the meeting. Turning off audio or video locks will allow these participants to rejoin the meeting. The feature will be off by default, so hosts will need to activate it during meetings, but there are no extra admin settings for the feature, which is rolling out now to all Google Workspace customers, as well as G Suite Basic and Business customers. Google Meet also recently upgraded its web platform with improved visibility, automatically detecting when a user appears underexposed on a call and enhancing the brightness of their feed in order to make them more visible. The service also recently added a new settings panel allowing users to quickly access effects such as background blur, background images and styles before and during a video call. https://www.pcgamer.com/revil-hackers-hijacked/ This article was updated on 22 October 2021 after new information surfaced. Click here to jump to the new info. Rampant hacker group REvil—known for using ransomware to extort companies for millions and selling data on the dark web when it doesn't get its way—has gone silent after finally receiving some penance, it would seem. According to reports (via Tech Crunch), the group's Tor payment portal and data leak blog have been hijacked, leaving the group crippled and platformless. A recent post from one threat actor associated with REvil, 0_neday, notes the attack not only took down 'Happy Blog,' it also deleted the path to the Tor service config files, replacing it with a malicious one to catch out the miscreants. REvil had been gaining heat from the US government over it's misconduct for some time before the blackout. Not long ago, the group targeted Acer, attempting to extort the company for approximately $100 million, and the group's backlog of victims doesn't stop there. Apple supplier Quanta Computer, and thousands of organisations using Kaseya IT management solutions have also been affected by REvil's wrongdoings. UPDATE We originally speculated about exactly who targeted the hackers, but new information has surfaced as to the culprit. Turns out it was a takedown from the FBI itself, with the help of "Cyber Command, the Secret Service and other like-minded countries," as Reuters reports. The Washington Post noted a while back that the US government had managed to obtain a decryption key, one that could've shut the group down back in September. However, they decided to hold off for whatever reason, only to notice the Happy Blog went offline of its own volition. That only lasted a while before the group resurfaced, though. So the big-wigs decided to execute a takedown, after all. Bleeping Computer says other whispers had suggested a mutiny was underway, with a former group member who didn't join the resurfacing potentially staging a takeover, but that idea has since been debunked. Either way, it's a win for the tech industry and the cyber-conscious. Lets hope that's the last we see of them. And as always, let this be a warning to keep your cybersecurity knowledge up to scratch. Hackers are all around us, and they don't often let up easy.

The new beta release will include the latest Android experience. We can also expect some tweaks and proprietary changes from the iQoo side. In addition to iQoo, other subsidiaries of China's BBK Electronics including Oppo and Realme have announced their plans to bring Android 12 on their flagship offerings later this year. As per the timeline provided in a press note, iQoo 7, iQoo 7 Legend, iQoo Z3, and the iQoo Z5 will get the Android 12 beta starting from the end of December. This clearly means that not all users will get the beta release simultaneously, and it may take some more time to reach your phone. While the iQoo 3 was launched in India last year with Android 10, iQoo 7, iQoo 7 Legend, iQoo Z3, and the iQoo Z5 came earlier this year and are based on Android 11. Alongside iQoo, Oppo earlier this month announced ColorOS 12 based on Android 12 that it will initially roll out in public beta for both Oppo and OnePlus phones later this year. iQoo and Oppo sibling Realme also announced its plans to bring Android 12-based Realme UI 3.0 to its flagship Realme GT as well as models such as the Realme X7 Max and Realme GT Master Edition later this year. iQoo Z5 With 44W Flash Charge, Snapdragon 778G SoC Launched in India Separately, Taiwanese manufacturer Asus has announced that it would bring a stable Android 12 release for its ZenFone 8 and ZenFone 8 Flip starting December. The company is also set to bring the new Android update to the ROG Phone 5 and ROG Phone 5s in the first quarter of next year. Furthermore, the ZenFone 7 and the ROG Phone 3 will get Android 12 in the first half of the year. Details about the India release of Android 12 for the Asus ROG Phone 5 and ROG Phone 3 are yet to be announced. iQoo 8, iQoo 8 Pro With 120Hz Refresh Rate, 120W Fast Charging Launched Earlier this week, Google released Android 12 for its Pixel phones. The update brings the Material You design language as well as a list of privacy-focused features. https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/grand-theft-auto-the-trilogy-the-definitive-edition-is-a-stupid-name-but-it-releases-november/ Rockstar recently confirmed one of the worst-kept secrets in gaming: the early 3D Grand Theft Auto games have been remastered, and now they have a release date, as well as a trailer showcasing the originals against the remasters. Pre-orders are live on the Rockstar website and the game releases on November 11: the price is $60/£55, though you can knock a tenner off that by buying direct from the Rockstar store. The product description boasts of "across-the-board enhancements including brilliant new lighting and environmental upgrades, with high-resolution textures, increased draw distances, Grand Theft Auto V-style controls and targeting, and much more, bringing these beloved worlds to life with all new levels of detail." It also confirms that the developer is Rockstar North but the games are "adapted by Grove Street Games" using the Unreal Engine. This Floridian outfit, formerly known as War Drum Studios, is behind the various mobile ports of the GTA games as well as versions of Max Payne and Bully. A Rockstar press release further expands on the changes: the remasters "introduce wide-ranging modern control upgrades, including improvements to targeting and lock-on aiming, updated Weapon and Radio Station Wheels, updated Mini-Maps with enhanced navigation allowing players to set waypoints to destinations, updated Achievements, Trophies, and more. The Nintendo Switch version also features Switch-specific controls including Gyro aiming, as well as touch screen camera zooming, pans, and menu selections, while the PC version includes support for NVIDIA DLSS and additional new Accomplishments via the Rockstar Games Social Club." Additional enhancements across all three titles include a completely rebuilt lighting system; improved shadows, weather, and reflections; upgraded character and vehicle models; along with new higher resolution textures across buildings, weapons, roads, interiors, and more. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition also features a range of environmental upgrades including all new foliage, smoother surfaces, and increased draw distances to provide a new level of depth and clarity throughout the world." Unsurprisingly, the system requirements are pretty low: minimum specs are Nvidia GeForce GTX 760 2GB or AMD Radeon R9 280 3GB, recommended are Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 4GB or AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB, and the games will take up 45GB of space. "GTAIII helped clarify our approach to making games, and it’s something that has stuck with us in every game we make, from GTAIII through to GTAV, the Red Dead Redemption series and everything else," says Aaron Garbut, head of development at Rockstar North. "We are focused on building worlds—and on making these worlds as believable, detailed, interesting, varied and alive as possible. We want to make worlds that you feel like you are living in, that feel dynamic and filled with other characters. Where it’s not just a façade that comes alive around you and for you, but as real a place as we can manage, and one that is filled with stories, characters, events and fun, interesting things to do." One of the most obvious signs that the GTA Trilogy was coming has been Take-Two's war on modders. In February it issued a DMCA notice against reverse-engineered source code releases for Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City, and when work continued it took the bigger step of filing a lawsuit to stop them.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-59015889 Actor Alec Baldwin has expressed his shock and sadness after fatally shooting cinematographer Halyna Hutchins with a prop gun on a New Mexico film set. He tweeted that he was in touch with her husband and had offered support. "My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna," he wrote. Ms Hutchins, 42, was shot on the set of the western Rust while working as director of photography. "There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours," he tweeted. "I'm fully co-operating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred." Ms Hutchins was flown to hospital by helicopter after the shooting on Thursday afternoon but died of her injuries. Director Joel Souza, 48, was injured and taken from the scene at Bonanza Creek Ranch by ambulance. Halyna Hutchins: Rising star of film industry was 'incredible artist' How prop guns work in films A spokesman for Mr Baldwin, best known for his role as Jack Donaghy on the NBC sitcom 30 Rock and for his portrayal of Donald Trump on sketch show Saturday Night Live, said the incident involved the misfiring of a prop gun with blanks. Police are trying to establish what type of projectile left the prop gun and how. Local media reported that Mr Baldwin was seen outside the Santa Fe County sheriff's office in tears.

https://www.pcgamer.com/hey-guys-please-dont-buy-apples-dollar19-microfiber-cloth/ This week Apple announced a bunch of new Macbook Pro laptops with their scary powerful M1 Max chips, which Apple claims can keep pace with Nvidia's RTX 3080 graphics cards. While impressive as that news is, it's a different Apple product announcement that's been occupying my waking thoughts. The Apple Polishing Cloth is an Apple-branded microfiber cloth it's selling for a whopping $19. Now, Apple is no stranger to selling its own accessories at a premium, but a $19 microfiber cloth is beyond egregious. What's even more flummoxing is these things are selling like hotcakes. So much so that there's a 10-12 week wait on all online orders. The produ"Made with soft, non-abrasive material, the Polishing Cloth cleans any Apple display, including nano-texture glass, safely and effectively."ct listing for the Apple Polishing Cloth says the following: That's a microfiber cloth, everyone. Amazon sells a pack of 24 for $12, and they come in a bunch of colors like blue, pink, and green. Apple's only comes in white. That's basically around $.50 a cloth. That isn't the only option either; our friends over at Tom's Guide put together a list of other cheap microfiber cloths that will do the same thing as the Apple Polishing Cloth at literally a fraction of the cost Listen, I get it. You might be all-in on Apple products, the same way someone is with Razer, Corsair, or the Alienware product ecosystem. There's nothing wrong with that. What is wrong is a company overcharging for a product that most likely costs them pennies on the dollar to make, just because there's a logo on it. I'm not one to tell folks what to do with their money, but I feel obligated to let folks know when they are getting ripped off. Don't spend $19 on something you can get for less than $1, please. I'm begging you.

https://www.techradar.com/news/google-workspace-wants-to-help-separate-work-and-personal-apps-on-android A new update coming to Google Workspace should make splitting work and personal apps easier than ever. The online collaboration suite will soon be able to set borders between your work and home apps, making sure you aren't disturbed by alerts when at the office, or when trying to relax at home. The update should give remote workers across the world a welcome productivity boost, allowing them to focus on what is most important to them at any given time. Work or home profile Recent research from Google and IDC found that much of the currently mobile workforce will continue to work from home even as the mandatory COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and closures are lifted - but many are increasingly juggling work and personal life on a single device. Until now, work profiles were only available on managed devices, but Google is now looking to make them available to unmanaged users with a business identity. The tool is able to split up work and personal apps, creating distinct profiles for the two sections which can be switched between when you need to focus, or to relax. When activated, work-related apps are not able to send your alerts, notifications, or access your location - and vice versa for personal apps. Your personal data is also locked down, meaning your company IT department can't track what apps you're accessing on the device. “This will eventually allow anyone using Android for business purposes to separate work and personal apps in one interface and pause all work-related apps in one click,” the company said.

https://www.pcgamer.com/razercon-razer-announce-sustainable-partnerships-collaboration-eco-watch-design-sneki-products/ Announcements from this year's RazerCon include an upcoming eco-watch design, new loveable Sneki Snek products, and talk of Razer partnering with two new companies. Of course, these are eco-centric companies that are just as dedicated to saving the planet as it is. By now any kind of nature-loving gamer will have heard of Razer's Green Fund initiative. Now, joining the multi-million dollar lifestyle brand's list of sustainable collaborations are Underwriters Laboratories (UL), the world’s largest non-profit safety science and certification company (and purveyor of 3DMark benchmark software); as well as Panerai, a *checks notes* luxury watch manufacturer. The latter may seem out of place, but Panerai and Razer both share a passion for Ocean preservation, as manifested previously in Razer's ClearBot collaboration. Not only will Razer be involved in the design of a "limited-edition, co-branded time piece made from sustainable material," but together the two brands will forge a year long campaign to "enhance ocean literacy." The upcoming watch design will be revealed next year, along with a March announcement that will detail a cause the two companies will support together. As for Underwriters Laboratories, you'll likely recognize the company as UL if you've ever gotten into PC benchmarking. UL has been helping set safety standards for years, even as far back as (and farther than) the 1930s in certifying early model consumer electronics, such as electric dishwashers, washing machines and black-and-white TVs. Now with UL in tow, Razer is leading the charge to change the gaming industry from within. Together, the two companies will come up with a standardized way to measure an 'eco-gaming product.' Seeing as there is no current standard for a product to be marketed as 'eco-friendly,' the partnership will define a bar for manufacturers seeking Environmental Product Declaration. Meaning companies—as well as you, the consumer—can more thoroughly reduce the impact on our world's resources. All this blends nicely with Razer's growing sustainable initiative, which includes a veritable forest of Sneki Snek products already moving to save a million trees. Now, three new Sneki drops have also been announced: a fleece blanket launching at 800,000 trees saved, a new keycap at 900,000, and a Razer Sneki hoodie at the one million trees mark. Also, Sneki will soon be starring in his very own cartoon series, with each episode focussing on a different environmental issue, and seeking to "empower viewers with ecofriendly habits that can be adopted."

https://www.techradar.com/news/shopify-and-spotify-want-to-help-artists-drive-business-to-their-online-stores Shopify has announced a new strategic partnership with Spotify that will allow artists to expand beyond music and merchandise to build fully realized businesses on its ecommerce platform. Artists that use Spotify to promote and distribute their music can now sell products such as hats, sweatshirts, vinyl records and more using Shopify on the platform where their listeners and fans already engage with their music the most. By connecting their Spotify for Artists account with their online store on Shopify, artists can sync their product catalog and showcase products of their choosing directly on their Spotify artist profiles which makes it much easier for fans to browse and purchase items. Shopify also gives entrepreneurial artists access to an all-in-one commerce platform from which they can manage their brands across multiple touchpoints including the most po[CENSORED]r music streaming service in the world. Director of product at Shopify, Amir Kabbara explained in a press release how the new partnership between the two companies will provide artists with new ways to monetize their brands, saying: “Thousands of artists already choose Shopify as their commerce platform, and now we’re bringing fans and artists even closer together with the launch of the Spotify channel. https://edition.cnn.com/2021/10/21/politics/donald-trump-social-media-truth/index.html DES MOINES, IOWA - OCTOBER 09: Merchandise is offered for sale before the start of a rally with former President Donald Trump at the Iowa State Fairgrounds on October 09, 2021 in Des Moines, Iowa. This is Trump's first rally in Iowa since the 2020 election. (Photo by Scott Olson/Getty Images) (CNN)Donald Trump is -- finally -- getting into the social media game. After a series of fits and starts, Trump announced the formation of TRUTH Social on Wednesday night -- an effort, he insisted, to "stand up to the tyranny of Big Tech." Posts will be called tweets TRUTHs and Trump said he is "excited to soon begin sharing my thoughts on TRUTH Social and to fight back against Big Tech." This is a uniquely terrible idea that will, almost certainly, fail. And there's plenty of reasons for that! 1. Twitter already exists. Know that whole axiom about not needing to reinvent the wheel? Well, Twitter already exists -- and has more than 200 million users. There does not appear to be significant clamor in the general po[CENSORED]tion for another micro-blogging website -- even though Twitter is far from perfect. Then there's this: Trump sent his first tweet on May 4, 2009. ("Be sure to tune in and watch Donald Trump on Late Night with David Letterman as he presents the Top Ten List tonight," it read.) Which means that he had 6 years to build up his presence on the social media platform before he started to use it -- aggressively -- to run for president in 2015/2016. He was a known commodity with lots and lots of followers. He wasn't starting from scratch. With TRUTH social, he will be. 2. The conservative social space is crowded (and not doing well): Remember how Parler was the new Twitter for conservatives? Well, after a very brief surge in downloads in the wake of the January 6 riot at the US Capitol (and Twitter's decision to ban Trump), the app basically disappeared in terms of relevance. "According to data from Sensor Tower, Parler downloads went from 517,000 in December [2020] to 11,000 in June [2021]," reported The Verge in July. Then there is Gettr, a Twitter clone launched by Trump associate Jason Miller. Within days of launch, hackers were able to take (and publish) email addresses from 85,000 of its users. "Gettr, the latest pro-Trump social network, is already a mess," declared TechCrunch. While TRUTH Social does have something that neither Parler nor Gettr had or have -- Donald Trump -- it's still not clear that the conservative social media universe is large enough to support one of these products much less 3. Donald Trump isn't president anymore. Make no mistake: Trump is still the most high profile and powerful player in Republican politics. But, since being banned from Twitter, Facebook and You Tube, his ability to steer coverage has been significantly lessened. As the Washington Post's Philip Bump noted in April: "[Trump's] Google search interest was lower than at any point since June 2015, as was the amount of time he was seen on cable. The networks were covering him far less, down to the point reached last year when the pandemic overtook Trump in the national attention. Besides that, the average mentions of Trump in March were back to the levels seen in November 2015."

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-58991811 A 60-year-old man from South Lanarkshire has died after saving his two grandsons from being swept out to sea off a Greek island. It is understood Jonathan Smith, from Carluke, drowned in choppy waters after rescuing the two boys in Crete. The incident happened at Gouves beach in the north of the island. Mr Smith worked at North Lanarkshire Council for 34 years and after leaving last year had been working for NHS Lanarkshire. Anthee Carassava, a journalist based in Athens, told BBC Radio's Good Morning Scotland programme he had been on holiday with his wife, daughter and two grandsons at the resort. Choppy waters "They simply went off for a swim and the two young boys, aged seven and 10, ran into some choppy waters," she said. "The grandfather got very upset and unnerved and he went in, tried to save them. He managed to pull them out of these choppy waters... but in his bid to actually reach these rocks along the beach, he simply got exhausted and it was impossible for him to get out." Ms Carassava said that locals, including two waiters, had also jumped into the water to help Mr Smith and his grandsons. She added that the boys had been taken to hospital where they were treated for minor injuries. "They saw their grandfather - a hero - effectively saving them but losing his life," she said. The Cretapost website said life-saving aids were thrown out to Mr Smith and the boys. A local worker told the website: "We tried to pull him ashore but the currents were very strong and we could not." 'Kind and considerate family man' Des Murray, chief executive of North Lanarkshire Council, said: "The news about Jonathan has been a terrible shock to everyone who knew and worked with him at the council and beyond over many years. "Jonathan was held in the highest regard, and the work he did to forge long-lasting links and friendships with communities and partners across North Lanarkshire is testament to the passion and tireless dedication he gave to everything he did." He said Mr Smith was central in developing the council's Syrian Resettlement Programme in 2015, which has assisted a number of families who have fled conflict and provided them with a safe and secure future.

Todavía no había iniciado camino. Lunes 20.

https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/destination-of-the-week/borders-reopen-and-new-york-tries-to-woo-international-travellers-back-7580930/ “We’re hoping the city tries to bring back these international tourists, because they’re our lifeline,” said Mohammed Rufai, an immigrant from Ghana who sells tickets in Times Square for a double-decker bus tour of Manhattan. “We need them.” Rufai, 45, said he could earn $200 a day before the pandemic, more than 70 per cent of it from sales to tourists from England, Mexico and other parts of the world. He now struggles to make half that. “You cannot ask people to ride if there are no people here to ask,” he said. The lack of tourists during the pandemic ravaged the city’s hotel industry, causing dozens of them to close — several permanently — and putting thousands of people out of work for more than a year. Some, like the Hilton in Midtown, the city’s biggest hotel, reopened this month in anticipation of an increase in tourism spurred by the return of Broadway shows and the holiday shopping season. The performing arts and hospitality industries also suffered steep losses and rampant unemployment without the usual flocks of tourists. Hundreds of restaurants in New York City closed for good during the pandemic, and the unemployment rate in the city is still 10.2 per cent, compared with 4.8 per cent nationally. ALSO READ |Travelling in the ‘new normal’: How pandemic has changed the rules of the game Since the Biden administration announced the lifting of restrictions, 75 per cent of new bookings at three Moxy hotels in Manhattan have come from Europe, said Mitchell Hochberg, president of Lightstone, the real estate company that operates them. Hochberg said he is considering reopening some of the restaurants and bars inside the hotels earlier than expected. “This is something we’ve been waiting for,” he said. “Neighbourhoods like Times Square and Herald Square are suffering because a lot of people have not gone back to work, and those neighbourhoods could be activated with more tourists.” But an influx of international tourists could compound the challenges that businesses have faced with labor shortages and global supply-chain delays. Hochberg said the hotel was ready to welcome a surge in visitors, despite supply-chain issues that prompted the Moxy to switch shampoo suppliers and led to a temporary shortage of linens, towels and air-conditioning parts. The hotel, like businesses across the hospitality industry, has also struggled to fill its job openings, meaning employees may have to work longer hours this holiday season. Hotels and restaurants got a boost this fall from the reopening of Broadway theaters, which had been dark since March 2020. The Broadway League, a trade association whose members include theater owners and producers, has not released weekly sales or attendance data since then, but Charlotte St. Martin, the group’s president, said that most of the 77 performances in September were sold out or close to full. During the 2018-2019 Broadway season, a record 2.8 million international visitors attended a show, accounting for 19 per cent of total attendance that year, according to the Broadway League. “Since Broadway reopened, it’s definitely helping,” said John Fitzpatrick, who owns two hotels in Midtown. “But we need the international travelers. They come during the week, they stay longer and they have an expense account.” This article originally appeared in The New York Times.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-58989242 Investigators leading a search for the missing fiancé of a murdered US blogger have found apparent "human remains" in a Florida park, the FBI has said. Items belonging to Brian Laundrie, who is a person of interest in Gabby Petito's death, were also found during the search, agents said on Wednesday. Mr Laundrie has been missing for over a month. Ms Petito's remains were found on 19 September in Wyoming. Officials say the investigation in the area is ongoing. In a news conference, FBI Special Agent Michael McPherson said that "investigators found what appears to be human remains along with personal items such as a backpack and notebook belonging to Brian Laundrie". "These items were found in an area that up until recently had been underwater," he said. Last week, a coroner in Wyoming ruled that 22-year-old Ms Petito had been strangled to death and left in the woods for weeks before she was found. This summer, Ms Petito and Mr Laundrie, 23, had embarked on a road trip through national parks in the American West, documenting their nomadic "van life" trip on social media. On Saturday, her parents collected her remains from a Wyoming mortuary following the post-mortem examination. What do we know about Gabby Petito's boyfriend? The missing Americans you don't hear about Mr Laundrie's parents say he was last seen on 13 September, after he returned to Florida without Ms Petito almost two weeks earlier. They say he went hiking alone and never returned. On Wednesday, Laundrie family lawyer Brian Bertolino told reporters that after a "brief search" with parents Chris and Roberta Laundrie, "some articles" belonging to him were found. He said the items were found on a trail frequented by Mr Laundrie in the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park. The park is where the car driven by Mr Laundrie was discovered after he went missing. The FBI's Tampa field office tweeted: "Items of interest were located at the Carlton Reserve this morning in connection with the search for Brian Laundrie." "An FBI Evidence Response team is processing the scene. The reserve is closed to the public and no further details are available at this time." Mr Laundrie has not been charged with crimes relating to Ms Petito's killing, however, the FBI has issued a federal arrest warrant and charged him with fraudulently using her debit card after her death. The plight of the travel influencer has captured global attention, and triggered a debate over the amount of attention accorded to missing white women.

https://www.techradar.com/news/google-docs-sticks-it-to-microsoft-word-with-latest-update With the launch of smart canvas earlier this year, Google made collaborating while working online even simpler in Google Workspace as the feature allows users to bring together all of its various tools including Docs, Meet, Sheets and Slides in any document they're working on. As part of its mission to build the future of work, the search giant also introduced smart chips which enable users to add interactive building blocks to connect people, content and events into one seamless experience. Now though, with its new universal @ menu, Google is making it easier to add things like tables and images in addition to smart chips directly into Google Docs. By typing “@” while in a document, users will see a list of recommended files, people, meetings, content elements and formats to insert into their work. We've put together a list of the best productivity tools available These are the best free office software solutions on the market Also check out our roundup of the best online collaboration software The addition of the company's @ menu ties together all of its online collaboration tools in a way that will likely help boost productivity as users won't have to switch tabs, apps or even leave the document they're working on to add rich elements to their content. Page break before in Docs In a separate post on the Google Workspace blog, Google revealed that Docs users can now mark a paragraph to always begin on a new page with its new “Add page break before” option. This new feature is particularly useful for journalists and other writers that want certain paragraph styles to always create a new page such as titles, subtitles or headings. At the same time though, “Add page break before” will also allow users to import and export Microsoft Word and other third-party documents that have this option applied to paragraphs and Google Docs will retain that formatting. To get started using this formatting style, users can go to Format > Line & paragraph spacing in the Docs menu bar and click “add page break before” after highlighting a title, subtitle or heading.
