Previous deaths include the breeding male, another yearling and three young pups. “We’re deeply saddened and angered that bullets have reduced this wolf family to a shadow of itself,” said Amaroq Weiss, senior wolf advocate with the Center for Biological Diversity. “The Department of Fish and Wildlife killed the mate of the pack’s mother. Forced to hunt alone to feed her two remaining pups, it won’t be a surprise if livestock conflicts continue since livestock are easier to kill for a wolf who has lost her packmates. The agency’s rush to kill wolves only makes things worse for the pack and the livestock operators.” The Lookout Mountain wolf family consisted of a collared breeding male and female, two yearlings and seven pups born this spring. It is estimated that only 3 out of the previously 11-strong wolf pack remain. Between mid-July and mid-October, wolves from the pack were implicated in conflicts with farmed cows that resulted in 12 injured or dead calves or steers. Losses were not discovered by livestock owners for anywhere from 10 days to three weeks after the incidents occurred, even though the Department of Fish and Wildlife says livestock operators are monitoring their livestock and removing sick or injured animals so as not to draw in predators, according to conservation organization, The Center for Biological Diversity. The first 10 SMEs, based in Ghana, were competitively selected from more than 70 applicants by an independent panel of consultants. Addressing participants at an orientation workshop held September 17, Dr. Edward K. Brown, ACET Senior Director of Research and Policy, underscored the “central importance of small and medium enterprises in the continent’s transformation agenda.” “Generally, interventions targeted at SME development have been uncoordinated,” Dr. Brown said. “ACET’s PSD approach will help fill the gap between public policy and private sector, to engage more constructively, and to better understand the local dynamics that drive SME businesses.” The ABT program is a flagship project of ACET’s burgeoning Private Sector Development (PSD) unit, targeting early- to growth-stage SMEs that have a manufacturing or assembly component in their business model. Mr. Charles Odoom, ACET Head of Private Sector Development, said the ABT program is ACET’s response to the challenges in the local content SME ecosystem. “Through technical and managerial interventions, mentorship, coaching, and direct funding, the program will move SMEs into investment readiness and support their integration into competitive global value chains.” The daylong workshop took participants through a complete overview of ABT as a unique business accelerator program, providing practical insight into the program’s ambitions, timelines, and, most important, opportunities. “Currently, our company is at the growth stage, and we need some restructuring,” said Kwesi Etu Bonde, CEO of Sky3 Ltd., one of the participating SMEs. “I expect that ABT will help us transform into a well-focused and well-planned business, ready to get external financial support.” ACET organized the workshop in collaboration with technical partners from PwC and EVC Africa, business advisory firms that reiterated their readiness to work with the ABT cohort not only to reach program goals but also to grow local businesses. “We are eager to bring all the knowledge, skills, and experience we have to assist these local SMEs, integrate them into the global value chains, and, ultimately, help transform Ghana’s economy,” said EVC Managing Partner Ed Villars. “We are excited about our partnership with ACET.” Kwabena Asante Poku, an Advisory Partner with PwC, said his firm will help the SMEs assess their situations and identify current gaps so that they are able to “transform into bigger, better organizations.” He said PwC will also assist ACET in developing an investment readiness tool that will help businesses determine “what type of investor they are actually ready for.” According to Mr. Odoom, ACET and its technical partners will perform a diagnosis on the participating SMEs to understand their individual needs as a business, and then work with each member of the cohort to develop an implementation plan that will “deliver a fruitful and exciting transformation journey for them.” In closing the daylong workshop, Mr. Odoom expressed optimism over the SMEs and the overall trajectory of the new program. “We have ten companies that have the potential to scale,” he said. “Their journey is going to take them to investment readiness and also support them to integrate into global value chains. At the end of the day, we want to see African companies going regional and taking advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area and other new opportunities.” The ABT program is expected to run for approximately nine months for the initial cohort.

Valve's Steam Deck is essentially a SteamOS-based PC based on a custom AMD accelerated processing unit (APU) featuring four Zen 2 cores and an RDNA 2 integrated GPU. The unit comes equipped with a 7-inch LCD with a 1280x800 resolution as well as console-like inputs. Though it's now been patched, the simple trick made players unkillable when they moved the window New World was running in. This started a conversation about whether the exploit worked because New World was "client authoritative", that it was trusting the game client's version of reality over that of the server, which would be a significant flaw. Reddit posts and viral Twitter threads explained that this was the cause of New World's troubles (one po[CENSORED]r thread posted last week has since been deleted). On Friday, Amazon responded to the claims, saying on the New World forums that "New World is not client authoritative". According to community manager Luxendra, the New World simulation is "entirely server based." Inputs from the client are fully animated on the server, and only after the animation is complete does the information get sent back. "We don't short cut or roughly compute this," Luxendra writes, "we do full physics detail for all such actions. Upon receiving the outcome, either hit or miss, the client will adjust its visual display to match what the server has determined. There are some client side tricks we use here to 'stretch' the animation while the client is waiting for the server answer, but the outcome is always based only on the server answer." The rubberbanding experienced by lagging players certainly suggests that the server has authority. But why didn't that prevent the invulnerability exploit? Manchin also called on the House of Representatives to pass the bipartisan infrastructure bill and warned, in an implicit rebuke to progressives, that "holding this bill hostage" won't work in getting him to support the larger social spending and economic package. Manchin has been non-committal about that larger package since Biden released a framework, but reiterated major concerns today. The moderate Democrat from West Virginia has been coy about his views of this proposal, despite months of efforts by Biden and his team to court the senator to back a pared back plan. But Manchin has been concerned about a number of proposals, including an expansion of Medicare. The bill is not yet finalized, but Biden announced a framework last week spelling out key details and the plan is poised to grow the entitlement program to cover hearing benefits but stops short of vision and dental coverage as many liberals had demanded. Manchin told CNN on Monday he plans to soon make a statement. "I think I will clear up a lot of things sometime today," he said. Asked him to explain what that meant, he said: "I think there needs to be clarity on where everybody stands." He later said: "I'm gonna put clarity to it." The 5ft (1.5m) snake was discovered by Thames Valley Police officers in Green End, Granborough on Tuesday night. It was taken to Aylesbury Police Station where police said it "snuggled up nice and warm in the inspector's office". The python will now be taken to a snake specialist in Leighton Buzzard who will take care of it until its owner, or a new owner, can be found. The force said it had been kept "safe and warm" thanks to the expert snake knowledge of one of the on-duty sergeants.

In a statement, Tesla said that "it has always been our ambition to open the Supercharger network to non-Tesla EVs and by doing so encourage more drivers to go electric". It added: "This move directly supports our mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy." Under the non-Tesla Supercharger pilot scheme, 10 stations in the Netherlands will be made accessible to Dutch non-Tesla drivers through the Tesla app. The pilot will be open only to drivers from the Netherlands, and they will need to have a car with a CCS charging plug. Tesla drivers can continue to use the Supercharger stations that are part of the trial, and the firm said that it will monitor the sites for congestion and take in customer feedback. Non-Tesla drivers will have to pay a higher fee due to the "additional costs" incurred in ensuring the sites can accept a range of different vehicles. Tesla has not specified the difference in rate and notes that it will vary by site and according to demand. The move might prove controversial to Tesla drivers, many of whom view having private access to the Supercharger network as a key benefit of Tesla ownership. The firm noted that allowing non-Tesla drivers to use the network will help enable faster future expansion and said that sites will be open to non-Tesla drivers in future only "if there is available capacity". Under the new government, there has been a concerted campaign to remove artworks from all aspects of life, in an attempt to make society more Islamic, the Taliban have said. In doing so, the group is erasing two decades of craftsmanship that blossomed after the collapse of its first government in 2001. The Taliban have closed music schools and covered up public murals. Radio and television networks have stopped airing songs, as well as musical and comedy shows. Production of Afghan films has come almost completely to a halt. “The future of art and culture seems bleak,” Sharifi said from Virginia, where he and his family have resettled. “It is not possible for the Taliban to live with art.” It took more than seven years for ArtLords, the organization Sharifi led, to paint roughly 2,200 murals, mainly on blast walls, in Kabul and elsewhere in the country, promoting messages of peace, human rights and gender equality, among other issues. But the Taliban labeled those colorful murals propaganda of the previous government. Less than three months after seizing power, they’ve covered most of them with white paint and replaced them with religious poetry or pro-Taliban messages. “It is like losing a child. I feel like a part of my body has been chopped off,” Sharifi said. “We painted under the scorching sun and during the freezing winter. We were threatened at gunpoint, but continued painting.” The Taliban haven’t officially imposed any nationwide restrictions on artistic activities. But they also have shown no sign that their government will allow art as a form of free expression in the society they wish to lead, and their actions so far foretell an uncertain future for thousands of artists. Nabipour said he lived fearfully in hiding for two months before he and his family were evacuated last week. “The Taliban ideology is against art,” he said. But the Taliban have rejected this, saying their government will not oppose art as long as it doesn’t violate Islamic laws. “We will define the status and position of music and art once the Islamic system is fully formed,” Zabihullah Mujahid, top spokesperson for the Taliban, told the Times. “Anything that has been banned in Islam will be treated based on Islamic teachings, and we will oppose them.” Afghan artists fear that the Taliban’s harsh interpretation of Islam means almost all forms of art will be banned, except for calligraphy, religious poetry and certain literature. Mujahid told the Times after the Taliban’s takeover in August that they considered music to be “forbidden” by Islam, but that they hoped to persuade people not to listen to it rather than force them. The Taliban prohibited music and movies when they ruled the country in the 1990s, severely punishing those who were caught violating the ban. Other forms of artistic activities or entertainment were also forbidden. They blew up two iconic Buddha statues in the central province of Bamiyan that had been carved into a mountain in the sixth century, and they smashed thousands of smaller sculptures. But after their first regime was overthrown with the U.S.-led invasion, art and entertainment saw a dramatic resurgence, much of it funded by international donors. Production companies began producing movies and television series, and a new generation of comedians and singers rose to fame, entertaining millions. Graffiti art, which didn’t exist in Afghanistan before 2001, flourished in urban areas. Afghan artists criticized the Taliban’s bloody insurgency. Comedians roasted the militants on television networks, painters expressed their abhorrence of the way they carried out attacks, and musicians sang anti-Taliban songs. Now, seemingly overnight, the art scene has vanished, and many fear that the new government will punish them for their critical views. Many artists continue to work on unfinished projects for the organizations that hired them in Afghanistan. Others have been sponsored by universities or nonprofits to take part in short-term programs, just to get them out of the country to safety. But what awaits them after those projects end is unknown. Nabipour, the former dean of fine arts, said he had been invited by the art, film and visual studies program at Harvard University to work as a research assistant professor for 10 months. “I have no idea what to do or what may happen after 10 months,” he said. “I am really worried about it.”

In an impassioned speech which drew a standing ovation, he said the fate of future generations must give delegates the impetus "to rewrite our story". The 95-year-old warned that humanity was "already in trouble" because of rising carbon levels in the atmosphere. More than 120 world leaders are in Glasgow for the two week summit. The COP26 conference is seen as crucial to limit global temperature increases, and changes to the climate. The world is now about 1.2C warmer than it was in the 19th Century - and extreme weather events like heatwaves, floods and forest fires are already becoming more intense. The 2015 Paris climate conference called for average temperatures to rise by well below 2C, and preferably only 1.5C, when compared to pre-industrial averages. But unless more is done, the planet is already on track to warm by more than 2C by the end of this century. 'The greatest problem solvers' Sir David spoke for seven minutes alongside screens showing a graph that tracked the rise of carbon concentration in the Earth's atmosphere. That number - which Sir David said was "the clearest way to chart" the story of humanity - currently sits at close to 414 parts per million. According to the Greenhouse Gas Bulletin, that is now 149% of the pre-industrial level. "Our burning of fossil fuels, our destruction of nature, our approach to industry, construction and learning, are releasing carbon into the atmosphere at an unprecedented pace and scale," he told the conference. "We are already in trouble." He also criticised wealthier nations, saying this was also a story of inequality and that "those who've done the least to cause this problem are being the hardest hit." The naturalist however said people were "the greatest problem solvers to have ever existed on Earth" and called on leaders to think of the younger generation as they work to address climate change. "If working apart we are a force powerful to destabilise our planet, surely working together we are powerful enough to save it," he said, before concluding, "In my lifetime I've witnessed a terrible decline. In yours, you could and should witness a wonderful recovery." Verdict Advertisement RingCentral Video is certainly worth exploring further as it is easy to overlook among the number of different video conferencing tools out there. Its free version, in particular, offers a very generous list of features. The integrations with other digital solutions are also impressive. Having said that, it is difficult to say that RingCentral Video provides a better offering than Microsoft Teams. If you are desperate to keep going with the free version, then it might be worth checking RingCentral out, but if you want added functionality, then Teams is the way to go.

However, that concept may be much closer to reality than expected, as the research describes a new, high-speed laser method of writing onto 5D structures. The 5D structure, built out of silica glass, can support long-term writings - and achieve storage densities that are 10,000x higher than current Blu-Ray technology. The new laser technology enabled the researchers to write in five dimensions - two optical and three spatial. The new approach can achieve write speeds of 1,000,000 voxels per second, the equivalent of 230 kilobytes of data (more than 100 pages of text) per second. That may sound ridiculously slow by today's standards - just look at the speeds the best SSDs achieve in comparison, such as 5,000 MB per second writes on the Samsung 980 Pro. However, some particular use-cases could benefit very much from such a technology, such as museums, libraries, and sure, the Ark-paradigm in science fiction. Furthermore, this technology actually could translate into real-world, cold-storage applications. "Individuals and organizations are generating ever-larger datasets, creating the desperate need for more efficient forms of data storage with a high capacity, low energy consumption and long lifetime," said doctoral researcher Yuhao Lei from the University of Southampton in the UK. "While cloud-based systems are designed more for temporary data, we believe that 5D data storage in glass could be useful for longer-term data storage for national archives, museums, libraries or private organizations." The team decided to test-drive their technology by writing 5 GB of data onto a 5D, silica glass disk. The researchers then asked one of the essential questions regarding storage techniques - is the data you are writing stable enough that you can get it back from its written state? The answer was a 100% successful readout. However, the test was conducted in only a small portion of the available medium - if filled to the brim, the silica glass disc would be able to hold 500 TB of data. The researchers say that with improvements to the writing techniques, particularly by taking advantage of parallelism, they can design a system that can fill that same 500 TB in a mere 60 days. The picture is a nice one: imagine if 500 TB of backup-only storage could be condensed onto a single external hard drive. That's the density scale advantage of this medium, compared to the file servers one would need today. Unfortunately, they also exhibited cracks that turned the medium unreadable. That would also seem to be the case on these particular silica glass data storage devices. The way of inscribing information is through extremely localized and precision-guided interactions between a high-repetition femtosecond laser and the silica glass structure. Essentially, the technique involves conducting extremely controlled explosions inside the silica structure. These explosions are controlled for temperature due to the nature of the laser's interaction with the silica glass and the resulting data structures (a nanolamella-like structure measuring just 500 by 50 nanometers each) can then be read back. The 3D part of the object is easy enough to understand - it's a cube. However, the data density of this technique isn't achieved merely via a spatial arrangement of information. The fourth dimension of storage is achieved by considering the light's slow axis orientation through the nanolamella-like structure, for which the researchers explore behaviors of a particle called soliton. This allows another set of binary (1,0) coordinates to be referenced and read from a single point in the data cube's space. If there's a soliton, it's set to 1. If there isn't a soliton, it's set to 0. The 5D part refers to an effect called strength of retardance, which is generally defined by the size of a nanostructure. As the nanostructure's size increases, so does the strength of retardance - another element that results in differences in light speed as it traverses the material. "This new approach improves the data writing speed to a practical level, so we can write tens of gigabytes of data in a reasonable time," said Lei. "The highly localized, precision nanostructures enable a higher data capacity because more voxels can be written in a unit volume. In addition, using pulsed light reduces the energy needed for writing." Zhang's team has already demonstrated that 5D data storage in silica glass could last basically forever. So long as we don't let these glass storage devices fall - or crack, of course. And with these new nanolamella-like structures being measured at a nanometer scale, I suppose there's an image for the future where it's still used as a technological advancement buzzword - if not for transistors anymore, then for nanolamellas and the data cube storage of (yesterday's) sci-fi. The nm will live on.

About 3 or 4 times a year, we head down the interstate to Costco, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and the Co-op. The bounty we are used to was less plentiful on a most recent trip. At the Co-op, many bulk bins were empty; their wholesale suppliers have been out of stock for over a month. At Whole Foods, Costco, and Trader Joe’s, staples we routinely buy were also unavailable. Human beings desire order in their lives. We experience order, Friedrich Hayek explained in “Cosmos and Taxis,” when our expectations are proven to be correct. The world we experienced on that shopping day was unexpectedly less orderly; typically, our expectations are almost always 100% met. Most of us think little about order until it is not there. Many believe order generally comes about by “deliberate arrangements made by somebody.” Hayek writes, “According to this interpretation order in society must rest on a relation of command and obedience, or a hierarchical structure of the whole of society in which the will of superiors, and ultimately of some single supreme authority, determines what each individual must do.” We are less aware of order when it arises as a spontaneous phenomenon. Hayek describes it as “an order that is of nobody’s deliberate making.” Spontaneous order is beyond the control, or even the understanding of anyone or any group of people. With spontaneous order, there is no threat of coercion; a harmony of interests emerges naturally. We fulfill our separate interests by cooperating with others. Cooperation harmonizes the interests of producers, suppliers, shopkeepers, and customers. That shopping day, in any of the stores we visited, it’s safe to bet that there were no two shopping carts filled with the same items. Shoppers were free to pursue their own purposes as they shopped. Think of the planned order in Soviet-era Russia. Shoppers stood in line in the bitter cold with the hope of purchasing low-quality sausage. In the Soviet Union, there was coerced unity, but there was little harmony of interests. History teaches that central planning in food distribution resulted in the starvation of millions. Authoritarians Coerce Unity Dr. David Galinsky is sure that those who have chosen not to vaccinate against Covid are revealing “a cynical lack of unity and resolve” in America. Galinsky reasons that the unvaccinated “have been primed not to believe us because they do not identify us as belonging to the same country as them.” Galinsky believes an economic class divide and “scurrilous politicians who are whipping up…anger and resentment” as well as “doctors and nurses who have promulgated falsehoods have done the priming.” Galinsky tries to be conciliatory, but he paints a version of Hillary Clinton’s “deplorables.” The vaccinated don’t want “sickness to spread in their own communities;” those who make different choices are painted as misinformed or uncaring. While Galinsky sees his opposition to the Vietnam War as righteous, he is sure the opposition to his view about vaccines is not at all righteous. In his view, the unvaccinated are killing the vaccinated; and one day in his “utopian fantasy,” he hopes with the aid of neighborly pressure, Galinsky’s “deplorables” will make a different choice and be redeemed. We could ask a hundred questions of Galinsky beginning with the obvious. Many experts disagree about boosters, natural immunity, and the safety of vaccines especially for younger adults and children at risk of myocarditis. Whose “unity” are we to follow? A new poll shows 48.6% “are not confident that the COVID-19 vaccines are necessary and appropriate for children ages 5-12.” When the vaccine is approved for that age group, will those parents wary of vaccinating their children be demonized for being in the way of “unity?” Galinsky says nothing of those with natural immunity after having contracted Covid. If he did, he might understand why fired healthcare workers, some of whom contracted Covid while putting their lives on the line during the pandemic, are not “primed” to share his view of unity. To be sure, many benefit from vaccines, but medicine is never one size fits all. Galinsky thinks those who have views differing from his own have nothing to teach him. Medical professionals who disagree are summarily dismissed as spreading “falsehoods.” Would Galinsky say that global unity has been undermined by medical authorities in Denmark and Sweden who have now stopped the use of the Moderna vaccine for those under 30? The vaccine mandate is causing shortages of health professionals. To cope, the governor of New York has ordered new graduates from medical and nursing schools be permitted to practice without the required post-graduate training, such as medical internships. Does Galinsky wonder how unseasoned, inexperienced nurses will learn with fewer senior nurses to help guide them through the perils of those early years? Worse, in New York State, the idea of deploying the National Guard as healthcare providers was trotted out. Are citizens in New York State better served by doctors and nurses fired for their lack of unity around mandates? You, like me, had probably never heard of Galinsky, but his mindset—that unity requires that all follow the same medical path—is shared by many. Galinsky’s false unity begins with the notion that he and his favorite experts have God-like power to know what is best for you. They will assess risk for you and expect compliance with no challenges. Yet, estimates of risk are subjective and political. Medical professor Dr. Vinay Prasad decries those “who are quick to label legitimate scientific dialogue as ‘anti-vax’ or ‘dangerous misinformation.’” Prasad adds, “[t]hey are further polarizing an already polarized debate, and worse, they are simply wrong. These are real and live issues. Intelligent scientists have to discuss these policy implications openly. The stakes could not be higher.” Limits on Power To be fair, Galinsky says nothing about President Biden’s vaccine mandates, commanding obedience to achieve coerced unity. The idea of an all-powerful president terrified the Founders. James Madison clearly stated in Federalist 45 the limited powers of government: “The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government, are few and defined.” The 9th and 10th Amendments to the Constitution reserve powers not delegated to the people and states. The 9th Amendment—”The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people”—is one of the most sublime expressions of freedom ever written, yet few know what it means. And so, many totally ignore the idea that rights are not granted by government but are embedded within each human being. In his book, The Founding Fathers Guide to the Constitution Brion McClanahan observes that the Founders “would have never supported an executive branch that could rule by decree, and the Constitution as ratified does not allow for unrestrained executive authority.” In Federalist 51, Madison wrote that however large the majority, minority rights remain: It is of great importance in a republic not only to guard the society against the oppression of its rulers, but to guard one part of the society against the injustice of the other part. Different interests necessarily exist in different classes of citizens. If a majority be united by a common interest, the rights of the minority will be insecure. Coerced unity denies the legitimacy of minority views and inevitably puts us on the path to tyranny. Unity via Our Common Nature From Stoic philosophers to quantum physicists, many have pointed to an underlying oneness that is the reality of life. Stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius wrote: Keep reminding yourself of the way things are connected, of their relatedness. All things are implicated in one another and in sympathy with each other. This event is the consequence of some other one. Things push and pull on each other, and breathe together, and are one. Marcus Aurelius wrote his Meditations as notes to himself. He wrote “keep reminding yourself” because he knew he would forget. This forgetting is universal. Today, like most days, it will appear as though we are separate from everyone and everything. If we don’t discipline our minds, others will appear as objects to be evaluated as helping us, hindering us, or irrelevant to us. Trapped in such a mindset, we will lose sight of the humanity of others. Aurelius reminded himself, “When you wake up in the morning, tell yourself: The people I deal with today will be meddling, ungrateful, arrogant, dishonest, jealous, and surly.” Aurelius’ solution wasn’t to correct other people but to correct himself: “Stop being aimless, stop letting your emotions override what your mind tells you, stop being hypocritical, self-centered, irritable.” Aurelius pointed to an important principle. He saw he was made of the same stuff as all other human beings: “They are not of the same blood or birth, but the same mind, and possessing a share of the divine.” Thousands of years after Aurelius saw unity in the common nature of humanity, the late physicist David Bohm offered that reality is governed by an implicate order: “Everything is enfolded into everything.” To enfold is to embrace, to come together, as all things are present in everything. Clearly, this implicate order, this oneness, is an order our senses cannot detect. Einstein put it this way: “A human being is a part of the whole, called by us ‘Universe,’ a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest—a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.” Recognizing that we possess “a share of the divine,” Locke articulated laws of nature that stand “as an eternal rule to all men, legislators as well as others.” In his Second Treatise Locke saw the principle of self-ownership as a law of nature: “Man is absolute lord of his own person and possessions, equal to the greatest, and subject to nobody.” In his Rights of Man, Thomas Paine saw Locke’s natural rights as the basis for unity: All accounts of man’s creation agree in establishing one point, the unity of man; by which I mean, that men are all of one degree, and consequently that all men are born equal, and with equal natural right…. and consequently, every child born into the world must be considered as deriving its existence from God. The world is as new to him as it was to the first man that existed, and his natural right in it is of the same kind. The principle of the “unalienable rights” of humanity—the basis of a true unity—is not established by government. It is only recognized, or not, by government. Unified by Natural Rights In his First Inaugural Address, Jefferson shared his belief that principles guide a great nation forward: Principles form the bright constellation which has gone before us and guided our steps through an age of revolution and reformation. The wisdom of our sages and blood of our heroes have been devoted to their attainment. They should be the creed of our political faith, the text of civic instruction, the touchstone by which we try the services of those we trust; and should we wander from them in moments of error or of alarm, let us hasten to retrace our steps and to regain the road which alone leads to peace, liberty, and safety. True unity invites open conversations over our differences. Jefferson clarified, “Every difference of opinion is not a difference of principle.” Near the end of his inaugural address, Jefferson acknowledged his own fallibility: “I shall often go wrong through defect of judgment.” The authoritarians in the Covid debate admit to no “defects of judgment.” Dr. Fauci has claimed that if you criticize him, you criticize science. A lesson from history comes to us from the Great Leap Forward in China, where millions starved to death due to Mao’s ruinous coerced unity. Mao told a 1959 meeting of his inner clique, called the “immortals” that he wanted an open conversation. When defense minister Peng Dehuai took Mao up on his offer, Mao quickly changed his tune: “You either want unity or you want to split the party.” Mao tolerated no opposition. There were consequences for going against Mao’s false unity; “Mao’s opponents were found guilty of having conspired against party, state and people.” A nationwide hunt for those hindering unity followed. Today, people are losing their jobs when they do not unite with the official Covid “science.” A nationwide witch hunt for heretics has begun. There will be no unity on the other side of a witch hunt. There will be no true unity built around contempt for the unvaccinated. True unity, our shared humanity, must rest on the principle of natural rights. Rights-based unity leads to cooperation and harmony based on respect for voluntary choices made by individuals, especially when their choices differ from our own.

This worn-down bullock will never feel the weight of a heavy cart again, never feel exhaustion, and never suffer from aching muscles. PETA India removed that painful tether and delivered this noble old man to one of Animal Rahat’s sanctuaries. But now having seen it do the business off-road, it’s clear that it’s just as capable as its orange counterpart. Concentrating on the bike, it’s clear that these machines are one step closer to production, quite possibly even full production spec, and that very little has changed between these and the first prototypes we saw two years ago. Five-time Dakar rally winner Cyril Despres The biggest change, other than the paint finish, is that the two-part split dash has gone in favour of a more conventional TFT – albeit not the one from the 890 Adventure, with Husky instead opting for the 5in full colour unit from the 1290 Super Duke R. It’s no real surprise to see a few items carry over from the 890 accessories catalogue, including the Akrapovic pipe. We’re expecting Husqvarna to unveil two versions of the Norden – a more off-road and adventure focused version with a high mudguard, longer-travel suspension and dual sport tyres as well as a more touring focused model with shorter suspension, comfier seat, larger screen and road-biased tyres. There’s been no official word from Husqvarna on the release of the new bike but we’d expect it to be unveiled in the Autumn and to be in dealers for Spring 2022.

Pope held up a photo of Forrest Gump. It had taken years of planning for Pope to embark on this trip to America, to make it to this barber’s chair. He’d spent countless hours daydreaming about it, building the momentum to go. As his job became ever more miserable – he was working 13-hour days, five days a week – the urge to escape became insurmountable. He quit and, along with his partner and fellow vet, Nadine, headed west. In many ways, the seed for this adventure was sown in 2002. That was the year Pope’s mum, Cathy, died after a cancer diagnosis. Cathy was a medical laboratory scientific officer and a single parent. She raised Pope with grit, determination and heartfelt support of his passion: running. He’d shown promise at the sport since his school days when he took part in the oft-dreaded cross-country and excelled at it. Cathy would take him to his races, which soon became marathons.
