  7. We round up all you need to know about Apple's in-car connectivity service - compatible with the iPhone 5 right up to the iPhone 7 Apple's CarPlay service addresses some of the biggest problems with in-car infotainment - namely, the difficulty in keeping maps, apps and data as up-to-date as possible. It offers carmakers the ability to swap standard infotainment systems for one that interlinks seamlessly with the iPhone - allowing you to control selected apps right from the car, using a familiar interface. Despite the recent launch of the new iPhone 7 coming with great news like improved storage, a better camera and faster performance, there was no mention of CarPlay being updated. However, Apple did mention improvements to the Maps app, allowing third-party apps to integrate to locations on the map. You can now order a taxi or read reviews right within the Apple Maps app. A while ago, Apple updated CarPlay for iOS 10, bringing greater functionality for the Apple Maps app. For the first time, Apple Maps is able to show turn-by-turn navigation instructions in a car's instrument cluster - much like many built-in sat-nav systems already can do. It's a big step towards making CarPlay feel more seamlessly integrated into a vehicle and less of an afterthought - as well as bringing it into line with competitor Android Auto, which has been doing it for a while. • Best sat-nav apps: 2016 group test As well as this, Maps for CarPlay will be able to suggest landmarks along a route, and show predicted traffic along the route. If traffic backs up, Maps will suggest a new route, and for the first time users are also able to swipe around the map while navigating. Apple is also opening up its voice-controlled digital assistant, Siri, to be used by outside developers. The company says developers could 'use Siri to control CarPlay apps' - potentially using the excellent voice recognition software to control more functions in car, such as changing a music playlist. • Android Auto: user guide and review About Apple CarPlay Key smartphone functions like voice calls, contact info and music streaming have been widely available via manufacturers’ own in-car interfaces for years, of course. But if you want to enjoy ‘maximum connectivity’ with your smartphone then systems like Apple CarPlay are the way to go. Simply put, Apple CarPlay is software built into a new car’s infotainment system that allows you to operate many of your iPhone’s features and apps via the car’s touchscreen display. It’s much safer than operating your phone when it’s mounted in a cradle, especially if you use the Siri voice recognition feature, and unlike using a hand-held phone while driving, it’s perfectly legal! You can also use steering wheel controls, or other relevant dashboard switches depending on how your car’s controls are configured. • Best in-car entertainment systems - group test The phone-to-car connection is hard-wired using the cable you’d be plugging-in anyway if you were using your car as a glorified phone charger. Future versions of Apple CarPlay will use WiFi or Bluetooth connectivity, we’re told. Which iPhone models are compatible with Apple CarPlay? CarPlay is compatible with all iPhones equipped with a lightning connector – which basically means anything from an iPhone 5 up, but specifically includes iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. When is your upgrade due? What apps and features does Apple CarPlay run? Siri is the voice assistance feature offered by the iPhone, and when connected to CarPlay it allows you to find contact numbers, listen to voicemails and will read out messages. You can also dictate responses and send them without taking your hands off the wheel. Siri also gives you access to iTunes for music, podcasts and radio, as well as various third-party apps like Spotify. Navigation is catered for with Apple mapping, giving you turn-by-turn directions, traffic conditions and an ETA. Again, you can use Siri to help plan journeys. Which carmakers offer Apple CarPlay compatible models? It’s an evolving situation, and not all the carmakers who’ve signed up for CarPlay make it available on all models yet. But the list of manufacturers who install the technology includes Audi, Citroen, Ferrari, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Peugeot, Porsche, SEAT, Skoda, Volkswagen and Volvo. If you are not in the market for a new car, you can also buy aftermarket navigation/audio head units that are pre-loaded with CarPlay – they’re currently available from Alpine and Pioneer. • Best app-friendly head unit upgrades Volkswagen reckons it’s the first manufacturer to offer a choice of three switchable smartphone interfaces. Its latest Discover Navigation system – a high-end option being introduced widely across its line-up as models are refreshed – boldly offers Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink connectivity. Many other manufacturers seem to be adopting the ‘either or’ approach with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and anyway the roll-out process is slow, so for now you’ll need to shop around to find your perfect smartphone match. But as the technology develops, more carmakers will be following VW’s lead and catering for everyone. Apple CarPlay versus Android Auto review – which is better? The basic features of the two rival systems are broadly similar, but dedicated iPhone users will prefer the simple and refined CarPlay interface, which mimics the look and feel they’re accustomed to. Android Auto uses the live update card information system used by Google Now. Music features naturally reflect the systems’ origins too – so CarPlay uses iTunes but also connects to Dash Radio, Stitcher and Audible, while Android Auto leads with Google Play Music, but also enables Spotify and Radioplayer. Both rival systems handle navigation and mapping effectively, but many users will be instantly more comfortable with the Android Auto’s Google Maps system, as it’s so familiar from their desktops. • Best sat-navs for 2016 While CarPlay supports Apple’s own messaging system, Android Auto can handle messages from Google Hangouts, KiK, WhatsApp and Skype to name a few. Apple CarPlay versus Android Auto review – verdict You’ll probably already own a smartphone when you buy your next car, and that will define your choice of in-car operating system. In terms of functionality the two systems are very similar, but CarPlay focuses on simple, clean, intuitive user journeys while the Android Auto strength is a more open platform for third party apps and content. It’s a highly subjective area, but if forced to choose we’d go for Android Auto with Google Maps and access to multiple messaging apps.

  9. Chinese ultra-mobile chip maker MediaTek has been working on a new series of platforms based on the ARM Cortex A72 core for some time. Already presented the MT8173 solution for tablets, and now we find that it is also preparing a model for smartphones. The new platform from MediaTek is going to be very powerful. It is desired a technological process of 20 nm or 16 nm FinFET but it is not certain which of the two will be used. If you opt for the 16 nm then the platform will be 3.5 times faster than the 28 nm with the A15 processor and 1.9 times faster than the 20 nm and the A57 processor. In the GPU chapter MediaTek started a collaboration with AMD, to replace the Mali and powerVR models with AMD Radeon chips. But it is too early to see the fruits of this agreement, so these Cortex A72 CPUs will most likely be accompanied by the GPUs that the Chinese manufacturer has become accustomed to. Source: Arenaa
  10. Hackers exposed the personal data of 110 million Americans, about half of the country's adult po[CENSORED]tion. And that's only in the last year, says CNN. According to researchers at the Ponemon Institute, the number of accounts broken in the last 12 months is 432 million. Each of these intrusions exposes data such as names, credit or debit cards, email, telephone, birthday, passwords or physical addresses. Even if only minimal data are stolen, they could be paired with credit card data, which could easily lead to various frauds by imposters. Specialists believe that this phenomenon is also due to the migration of life to online, where many are shopping, socializing or banking.

  17. Microsoft has (sort of) paused deployment of the latest preview build of Windows 10 in the slow ring, and is no longer offering it to those upgrading from the previous build, after these testers ran into trouble with installation issues. Hopefully, this isn’t a sign that the incoming April 2019 Update (as it will supposedly be named) is going to be delayed – more on that shortly. This all started at the end of last week, when Microsoft released a new preview build 18362 (for the April 2019 Update, aka 19H1) to Windows Insiders in the slow ring. As soon as that happened, the software giant began to receive reports from testers who said the build failed to install. After investigating the matter, Microsoft has now said that there is an issue with the previous build’s 18356.16 (KB4494123) Cumulative Update, and this is what’s causing build 18362 to produce an error message rather than successfully install. So for the time being, the new build 18362 won’t be offered to testers on 18356.16, until Microsoft can resolve the problem (although note that the new build will still be offered to slow ring testers upgrading from earlier versions). Fixing a hole In a blog post update, Microsoft said: “The team is currently working on a fix now … We will post another update once we release the fix and resume the Build 18362 flight.” There’s no indication given of how long it might take to cure this particular gremlin. As this build is rumored to be the RTM (release to manufacturing – effectively the finished version) of Windows 10 April 2019 Update, the incident has likely caused some folks to worry a little about whether this could potentially be a spanner in the works in terms of delaying the imminent update. Realistically, that seems unlikely, though, and any delay caused by this hiccup is likely to be short, or indeed completely insignificant (hopefully that will be the case, anyway). Meanwhile, the affected testers on the slow ring will just have to sit tight and wait for Microsoft’s solution to be implemented. Build 18362 still has a few known issues including problems with Creative X-Fi sound cards and crashes being triggered by games which use certain anti-cheat software.
  18. The PlayStation 4 technical specifications describe the various components of the PlayStation 4 (PS4) video game console. The original released 500GB HDD PS4s had manufacture serial numbers of the form CUH-10XXA; a minor modification with a different form of WiFi Microstrip antenna was registered in mid 2014 as part numbers CUH-11XXA.[1][2] In 2015, the CUH-12 series as variants CUH-1215A and CUH-1215B (with 500GB and 1TB storage respectively) were certified in the USA by the FCC. Differences between the CUH-11 and CUH-12 series included a reduction in rated power from 250W to 230W, a reduction in weight from 2.8 to 2.5 kg, and physical buttons.[3][4][5] The CUH-12xx series are also referred to as the "C chassis" variant of the PS4.[6] In late June 2015, a 1TB CUH-11 series machine was announced for European/PAL markets.[7] The CUH-1200 series was officially announced in June 2015, releasing first in Japan, then worldwide. Changes to the design included a matte black HDD cover replacing the original gloss black version.[8][9][10] Other minor changes to the design included mechanical buttons replacing electrostatic touch sensitive ones, and a shorter LED indicator on the top surface of the console.[11][12] Internally the CUH-12 series included a number of minor changes, including the change to 8 memory modules of 1 GB (from a previous 16 modules of 512 MB).[13] At a PlayStation official event in New York (USA) in September 2016 Sony officially announced a new redesigned PS4, the CUH-2000 series, (known colloquially as the "PS4 slim") for sale from 15 Sep at $299, €299, £259, or 29,980 Yen for the base 500GB model.[14][15] According to a Sony press release the new model (CUH-2000) was 16% lighter and used 28% less energy than the CUH-1200 series.[14] A 1TB model at 34,980 Yen was also announced.[14] At the same event a more powerful variant, named the "PS4 Pro" was also announced, designed for 4K and HDR displays. PlayStation 4 Pro[edit] The upgraded 'PS4 Pro' (originally codenamed 'Neo',[17][18] product code CUH-7000) uses a more powerful APU initially built with a 16 nm FinFET process from TSMC. While the number of logical processor cores (8) remained the same, CPU clock speed was increased from 1.6 GHz to 2.13 GHz (33.1% improvement in CPU core clockrate), but with the underlying architecture unchanged. The number of graphics Compute Units on the APU was doubled to 36 Graphics Core Next (GCN) Compute Units (from 18), with a clock speed increase to 911 MHz (from 800 MHz), resulting in a theoretical single precision floating point performance metric of 4.19 TeraFLOPs. Compared to the original PS4 GPU, this is a 2.27X increase in single precision FLOPs. Improvements in GPU 16-bit variable float calculations derived from the newer AMD Vega architecture result in the PS4 Pro having a theoretical half precision floating point performance of 8.39 TeraFLOPs. Overall unified system memory architecture has been improved, with the addition of another 1GB segment of DDR3 DRAM. The PS4 Pro is able to use this increase in memory to swap out non-gaming applications that run in the background, like Netflix and Spotify. As a side benefit to this, an additional 512MB of GDDR5 is available for developers to use for games adding up to 5.5GB, as opposed to the 5GB available on base PS4 hardware. GDDR5 memory speed was increased from 5.5 Gbit/s (or 4x 1.375 GHz) to 6.8 Gbit/s (or 4x 1.7 GHz) increasing total memory bandwidth to 217.6GB/s which correlates to a 23.8% improvement. Some elements added to the design were derived from AMD's newer Polaris and newer architectures;[20][21] such new features of the processor included a HEVC video codec supporting up to 4k resolution. Other specification changes included HDMI output to HDMI 2.0b standard, with HDCP 2.2 compliance. Wireless networking included 5 GHz band support using the IEEE 802.11ac standard, and Bluetooth support was to version 4.0; wired LAN was as the original PS4. The rated power of the original PS4 Pro was 310W. The PS4 Pro does not support Ultra HD Blu-ray (UHD BD) discs, used for 4K content, as the BD-ROM internal drive does not support the BDXL format (100GB +) required for 4K video, on preliminary tests the console is able to recognize and play these discs on a 4K capable USB 3.0 external disc drive.[citation needed] The decision not to upgrade was predicated primarily on cost. A limited translucent case-version of the PS4 Pro was released in August 2018, which include minor hardware updates. This new system, model number CUH-7100, besides offering a larger hard drive, used a quieter fan that helped to reduce the noise levels. It also drew power at a consistent rate compared to the CUH-7000, though ran slightly hotter than the launch system. A second minor hardware refresh, with model number CUH-7200, was first released in bundles with Red Dead Redemption 2 in November 2018. The newer version, otherwise functionally equivalent to the CUH-7000, has a different power connectors, and uses a quieter fan, which, according to Digital Foundary, made a "night and day" difference in the noise level, similar to the improvements in the CUH-7100. It further draws power consistently at 170W, whereas the 7000 while rated at 170W would have brief spikes up to 177W. However, the newer console runs slightly slower and hotter than the 7000 model to gain this improvement.

  19. Hyundai is recalling about 305,000 of its 2011-12 Sonata models because the automatic transmission could possibly be moved out of park without pressing the brake pedal, allowing the car to roll or drive away, according to a report from the automaker posted this week on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website.Hyundai attributed the problem to the stop lamp switch. It is the third time since 2009 that Hyundai has recalled vehicles for a malfunctioning brake switch. In this recall, Hyundai said along with the ability to move the transmission out of park without pressing the brake, the brake lights might remain illuminated after the brake pedal was released. It said it was unaware of any accidents or injuries related to the problem.Hyundai told federal regulators that a switch could become stuck, but the automaker was still trying to figure out why. Hyundai said it became aware of the issue because of an unusual number of warranty claims.Continue reading the main storyRelated Coverage Business Briefing: Hyundai Recalls 570,000 Sonatas and Accents SEPT. 25, 2015The automaker has had a series of problems with brake switches. In 2013, Kia and its parent company, Hyundai, recalled about 1.7 million vehicles, including the 2011 Sonata. Hyundai said the switch malfunction could cause problems such as a driver’s not being able to shut off the cruise control by touching the brake. In 2009, Hyundai recalled about 533,000 for similar problems with the brake light switch.
  20. Ukrainian Brazilians (Portuguese: Ucraino-brasileiro, Ucraniano-brasileiro; Ukrainian: Українські бразильці, Ukrayins'ki Brazyl'tsi) are Brazilian citizens born in Ukraine, or Brazilians of Ukrainian descent who remain connected, in some degree, to Ukrainian culture. In 1994, 400,000 people of Ukrainian descent lived in Brazil, 80% (or approximately 350,000) of whom lived in a compact region approximately 5,000 square kilometres (1,930 sq mi) in size (an area slightly larger than the US state of Rhode Island), in the hilly south central part of the state of Paraná in southern Brazil. They refer to this region as "Brazilian Ukraine."Smaller numbers of Ukrainians have settled in São Paulo, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul,Pernambuco, and Paraiba. The cities with the largest number of Ukrainians are Prudentópolis (approximately 38,000 Ukrainians, or 75% of the city's po[CENSORED]tion), Curitiba (33,000 Ukrainians), and União da Vitória (approximately 26,400 Ukrainians or 50% of the city's po[CENSORED]tion). In 2009 the Ukrainian po[CENSORED]tion in Brazil was estimated to be 500,000 people. Brazil has the third largest Ukrainian community in the Americas, and the third largest Ukrainian po[CENSORED]tion outside of the former Soviet Union; only Canada and the United States have larger Ukrainian po[CENSORED]tions. In comparison to Ukrainians in North America, the Ukrainian community in Brazil (as well as in neighboring Argentina) tends to be more descended from earlier waves of immigration, is poorer, more rural, has less organizational strength, and is more focused on the Church as the center of cultural identity.Seventy percent of Brazil's Ukrainians live in agricultural communities known as "colonies" where they tend crops such as wheat, rye, buckwheat, rice, black beans, and erva mate, a local type of tea. These colonies are isolated from modern areas of Brazil's economy and from non-Ukrainians, and in many respects closely resemble Galician (Western Ukrainian) villages of the 19th century

Facebook is launching a new platform which will see the social network giant take on the likes of YouTube as well as TV networks. The launch will see users of the site given a "Watch" tab on their feeds enabling them to view a range of shows from comedy or reality to live sport. They will also be able to create "watchlists", see what friends are watching and communicate with other people interested in the same videos. Some of the shows will be paid for by the social network. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said in a post on the site: "Watching a show doesn't have to be passive. "It can be a chance to share an experience and bring people together who care about the same things. "That's why we're launching the Watch tab in Facebook - a place where you can discover shows your friends are watching and follow your favourite shows and creators so you don't miss any episodes." He said some of the content would be made by "professional creators" and others by "regular people in our community". Watch will initially be available to a limited group of people in the US on mobile, desktop and TV apps, before being made available to more people in the US in coming weeks. Facebook said it was starting by "testing with a limited group of publishers and creators who are making shows". It pitches the firm against Google - owner of YouTube - as well as the likes of Netflix and Amazon. The announcement comes after entertainment giant Disney said it was also launching its own streaming service.
