A large-scale scam circulating on Facebook has already affected about 500,000 people, say online security experts. In fact, it's a phishing campaign derived from the version that has already claimed millions of victims so far, namely the "Is it you, somehow?" which involves receiving a message from a person, which can also be known by the target person. The message consists of a video, in which the attacker claims that the victim would appear, shows the publication "The Sun" It is, in fact, a virus, which attempts to exploit the victim's computer or phone in order to obtain sensitive personal information, including access to bank accounts, warns experts in organized crime online, according to the quoted source. The phishing message can be sent right from the computer or phone of a virtual friend, without him suspecting, because he already has the infected device. Read also Vaccine documents made public by hackers after a computer attack on the EMA If the target clicks on the link with the so-called video sent, it will be redirected to a number of sites, ending up infecting its device with malware. The current threat, considered at least as dangerous, has been investigated by Cybernews experts. Online security experts believe that a hacker could determine a person's location, the device they use and the operating system on the device. Based on this data, it will adapt the type of malware used, which will eventually infect the device and lead to the leakage of sensitive information. The victims even reach a phishing page that mimics Facebook, where they will be asked for personal data. According to CyberNews, the attacks began in January 2020 and targeted mainly users in Germany. So far, 480,000 people have been affected. Source: The Sun. Destruction AllStars is a game full of crashes. Most of them are the kind you'd expect, but the PlayStation 5 exclusive has been prone to the odd hiccup here and there. Fortunately, developer Lucid Games appears to be working overtime to improve its vehicle-wrecking multiplayer title, as it's just released another patch. Update version 1.2.3 is live right now on PS5, and it looks like a pretty solid maintenance patch that fixes some common problems. In a Twitter thread, the studio outlines the major points addressed by the update. Here's all the notes: Weekly Reset time has been set to Wednesday 3pm UTC Weekly Challenges now award AllStar Coins instead of XP XP rewards for Daily Challenges have been increased from 3k to 25k Fixed several issues preventing successful matchmaking Reduced the frequency of parties being split into different games at the end of a match Fixed an instance of the UI incorrectly reverting player level Fixed several server crashes relating to Gridfall Fixed several client crashes Improved some error message descriptions So, essentially the game should now be much more reliable. Plus, if you beat one of the weekly challenges, you'll get AllStar Coins rather than XP, which seems like a good shout. In a recent poll, we asked you what you think of Destruction AllStars so far. With this new patch, will you be giving it another shake? Did you experience any technical issues with the game prior to this update? Discuss in the comments section below.

Mac owners who are upgrading to macOS Big Sur should be very careful if they are running low on drive space, as in this case, the process could reportedly lead to data loss. The issue here is that an initial upgrade to Big Sur requires a minimum of 35.5GB to be available on the drive, plus 13GB for the macOS Big Sur installer itself (making 48.5GB in total). If you don’t have that much space, then things can go badly wrong, as reported by Mr Macintosh. Apple sold a ton of Macs last year All the best Macs to buy Check out all the best laptops around The problem is that apparently macOS doesn’t check if you have that amount of drive space before starting the installation process, and when the installer subsequently runs out of room, some folks are reporting getting an “error occurred preparing the software update” message. The Mac then becomes stuck in the Boot Recovery Assistant environment, with no way to recover. Well, no easy or obvious way to recover, anyway, leaving the data on the disk in danger of being lost – more on that in a moment. Sticky situation The possible recovery procedure depends on the exact scenario you’re in, as explained in the blog post by Mr Macintosh, but if you have FileVault encryption enabled on your system, things can get very sticky. Indeed, in the latter case, the only way to go about righting your system and recovering your data is by using a second Mac (running macOS High Sierra or Mojave) and hooking the two machines up. So, many folks will be in trouble there, as it isn’t exactly common to have more than one Mac (or easy to borrow one, if you don’t).

Famed PSU and graphics card manufacturer EVGA offers a 1300W PSU specifically for mining, the EVGA 1300 M1 80 PLUS Gold, but so far it's only seen a release in China. However, as cryptocurrency mining comes back into fashion, it's since been made available over at Newegg in the US. As far as I can see you won't find it listed on the US EVGA site but you can see a full listing for the EVGA 1300 M1 over on the EVGA China website. It comes with a 7-year warranty, 80 PLUS Gold efficiency, and a fully modular design capable of powering up to six graphics cards at a time. That warranty is a few years shy of the 10-year one offered with EVGA's G-line PSUs, those which are intended for overpowered PCs. The mining PSU will be expected to run 24/7, though, which perhaps goes some way to explaining the slightly less optimistic outlook. There are two fewer SATA power and only one CPU power, which limits this PSU for high-performance PCs somewhat, but the rest of the unit is largely the same to a 1300W G2 unit or G+. Perhaps the biggest difference between this model and EVGA's others is the lack of fancy packaging. Just a standard box will do for miners, and to be honest I'd be happy with that all-round if it meant less waste. It's available in the US from Newegg (via Vortez.net) for a total of $294.99, down from $299.99. That's a little pricier than the list price of the G+ on the EVGA store, and the same as the G2, but both of those PSUs are sold out. Going off Newegg's ballooned list prices, the M1 is actually the cheapest of the lot. SCREEN QUEENS (Image credit: Future) Best gaming monitor: pixel-perfect panels for your PC Best 4K monitor for gaming: when only high-res will do Best 4K TV for gaming: big-screen 4K PC gaming It appears as though the M1 has been on sale on the Chinese EVGA store since at least August 2020, yet only seems to have recently been made available by a third-party seller on Newegg in the US. The product is remains listed on the official EVGA store in China alone, however, and I don't suspect we'll see it pop up elsewhere anytime soon. I'd take a guess that hardware companies, such as EVGA, are likely a little more hesitant to dive headfirst on mining demand this time around, for fear of a crash leaving themselves oversupplied with mining gear nobody wants anymore. Nvidia and AMD famously overstocked cheaper graphics cards during the initial 2017–2018 boom and bust cycle, leaving tons of unwanted graphics cards floating in the channel that impacted both companies' earnings for the next few quarters, if not admittedly a little longer. And nobody wants to go down that road again...

2021 Genesis G80 Starting Price: $47,700 | Price yours or View listings near you. Above Average: Available all-wheel drive; plenty of driver assists; unique looks; powerful twin-turbo V6; optional adaptive suspension. Below Average: No V8 or hybrid option; lacks European brand cachet; small trunk. Consensus: A sharp-looking and distinctive midsize sedan, the 2021 Genesis G80 offers comfort, style, and luxury at a very competitive price. The base turbocharged 4-cylinder engine provides plenty of power, and a 3.5-liter V6 upgrade takes it to another level. The G80 comes generously equipped, with plenty of standard equipment including driver-assist and safety features. 2021 BMW 5 Series 2021 BMW 5 Series Starting Price: $55,195 | Price yours or View listings near you. Above Average: Choice of engines, including a plug-in hybrid and a powerful V8; optional all-wheel drive; great driving manners. Below Average: Gets expensive quickly; somewhat polarizing styling; not as thrilling as some older 5 Series. Consensus: A top-notch midsize luxury sedan, the 2021 BMW 5 Series sedan offers a luxurious interior, great driving manners, and a choice of engines, including a plug-in hybrid and a V8. It starts expensive and only gets more so, and its aggressive twin-kidney grille is not to everyone’s liking. G80 vs. 5 Series: Performance and Luxury Genesis G80 Having gone through a comprehensive redesign for this year, the 2021 Genesis G80 is a striking midsize sport luxury sedan that offers a whole lot at a very competitive price. The base engine is a 300-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder, with a 3.5-liter V6 as an upgrade. Gone is last year’s optional V8. Rear-wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel drive available as an option for more sure-footedness in snow. Despite its size and generous interior, the G80 handles itself well, and there’s even an optional sport suspension that uses cameras to read the road surface and adjust accordingly. Inside, there are comfortable and supportive seats, plenty of space for rear passengers, and a 14.5-inch infotainment screen operated by a console-mounted dial. Navigation and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility come standard. Safety features include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic collision avoidance. Not only does the G80 start thousands below its German competitors, but it also offers a best-in-class 10-year/100,000-mile warranty and 3-year free maintenance. Genesis still doesn’t have the name brand of its competitors, and there’s no available hybrid option. BMW 5 Series Practically the dictionary definition of performance luxury sedan, the BMW 5 Series is a solid driver’s car, with a very good balance between comfort and handling. A choice of engines ranges from a turbocharged 4-cylinder that returns 28 mpg combined up to a rather bonkers 523-hp V8. In between is a plug-in hybrid and a 6-cylinder that uses mild hybrid power to improve acceleration. An 8-speed automatic sends power to the rear wheels or all four, except with the V8, which gets all-wheel drive. The interior is predictably well made and comfortable, with a good balance between soft SensaTech leatherette (or in upper models, leather or even Nappa leather) and tech, with a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. The look is clean and elegant, although the twin-kidney grille is not for everyone. Standard features include power front seats, automatic climate control, and both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. There are also numerous standard driver-assist and safety functions, with more available as options. Resale values are typically above average. Similarities Trunk size; standard safety features; standard Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration. 2021 Genesis G80 Advantages Much lower starting price; longer warranty; sharper looks. 2021 BMW 5 Series Advantages Optional hybrid; optional V8; fuel economy; luxury cachet. Final Recommendation In the competitive luxury sport sedan segment, the 2021 Genesis G80 is a great car, with a starting price more than $7,000 below that of the 2021 BMW 5 Series. For that alone, it could win this comparison. But there’s no mistaking that the 2021 5 Series has earned its place as one of the best midsize luxury sedans, and continues to improve and refine itself. If it’s in your budget, you’ll know where that extra money went.

Vice President Kamala Harris, who took oath on January 20, has her hands full at the moment. But that has not stopped her from taking out time for herself and continue with her fitness routine. Recently, a social media user uploaded pictures and videos on Instagram sharing about his surprise encounter with Harris, during his five-mile run in the city. The runner wrote how during their run they had stopped to see the new glass portrait of the Vice-President when he happened to spot Harris herself running up and down the stairs of the Lincoln Memorial with her husband, the Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff. Flanked by Secret Service personnel, Harris, in the pictures, can be seen wearing a warm North Face jacket, running leggings, trainers, a baseball cap, and face mask. Take a look! A number of Twitter users commented on the now-viral pictures and video commending Harris on perfectly balancing personal and hectic professional life. How does stair-jogging help? As an explosive, fast, and strength-based form of physical activity, stairs-jogging helps tone muscles, increase cardiovascular endurance, and burn calories to aid weight loss. Stair running helps accelerate the heart rate rapidly and makes one breathe faster to take in more oxygen. A 2005 NIH study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine showed that short bouts of stair-climbing five days a week for eight weeks improved VO2max or the maximum rate of oxygen consumption by 17 per cent in women.

Game Information Initial release date: October 15, 2020 Software developer: Playmestudio Publisher: Rao Fiori Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, Mac OS Type: video game, puzzle video game, adventure video game, indie game Machines that can look at people’s memories are a fairly po[CENSORED]r sci-fi trope. The Signifier, however, goes about it in a noticeably different way. It’s part-adventure game and part-walking simulator, with enough unique concepts to stand on its own and deliver an intriguing, memorable story. The voice acting and character animations don’t live up to the premise, but the trippy visuals, thoughtful design, and the lingering questions it leaves make it well worth a playthrough. The Signifier tells the story of Frederick Russell, a celebrated AI researcher. Russell works out of a small lab that houses a machine capable of scanning brains, interacting with memories via the assistance of an AI he developed, Eevee. The game takes place in the future, where AI is heavily regulated by a government entity known as the TSB, which is attempting to manage the way society integrates with the technology. All the while, the tech firm Go-AT continues to aid in changing people’s lives with AI tech. The plot kicks into gear when Go-AT’s vice president is found dead in her apartment of an apparent suicide. But something about it stinks to high heaven. The TSB sends Russell a hard drive with a scan of her brain on it so that he can dig into her memories and find out just what happened to her and why. The story is alluring and mostly well-written, even if it does have a jarring coincidence or two and doesn’t exactly wrap itself up in a satisfying way. As I said, the voice acting isn’t great and the character animations are stilted and awkward, but I was intrigued by the narrative the whole way through. The game has three endings, and I completed it twice to view two of them. But there are a lot of different, well-integrated responses you can give that will change the way characters interact with you. Subjective is the objective Gameplay in The Signifier revolves around using Russell’s machine to personally dive into and explore the memories of the deceased vice president, Johanna. It handles this feat in truly interesting ways. Most memories have two forms: objective and subjective. The objective memories are more realistically drawn, while the subjective ones feature levels of metaphor. In Johanna’s case, she was heavily medicated and her objective memories tend to lack color and detail, oftentimes devolving into a mess of voxels. The subjective versions of these memories are generally much more detailed. The way these memories are rendered looks like someone took a photo and distorted it until it became three-dimensional, similar to the way that street-level Google Maps look. It’s rather striking and quite eerie at the same time, and makes the game unique from a visual standpoint. When in a memory, Russell can swap between the objective and subjective states, as well as switch to different memories, ask Eevee for hints, or move to different memories altogether. You even get to explore one of Johanna’s dreams, which is quite memorable. When inside memories, The Signifier is all about exploring and finding new pathways into deeper memories. For instance, you go to a memory of Johanna’s childhood home early on and end up finding strange connections to others in the same location. It’s trippy as hell. Russell also finds raw data that he can pick up and use in various places to fill in gaps that either allow him to progress further or learn more. It’s typically never too difficult to progress, even though it would have been all too easy for the game to become confusing. Futureal While in a memory, Russell can return to his lab. From there he can go home or to several other places via an in-game map. The plot frequently requires you to visit other locations, in which you also explore and talk to people. Visually, The Signifier is much less interesting when in the real world, but that’s to be expected. The locations are still well-realized with believable architecture and the like. Russell has a cell phone that he can use to call people, which is important when aiming for some of the game’s endings. For instance, his contact at the TSB, Tom, is the one who sent him the brain scan and is responsible for distributing the funding that keeps the lab running. If you don’t keep him abreast of your investigation and do what he asks of you, he tends to get pissy. It’s an enjoyable game to play, but it doesn’t have enough differences in subsequent playthroughs to maintain the same level of interest afforded to the initial one. Even when going for different endings, the events play out identically. Despite this, certain characters can treat you completely differently based on your choices throughout the story. For instance, Russell’s daughter Lauren shows up early on. Based on the way you treat her, she might end up hating you in the end. Funny thing about Lauren, though. She has septum and lip piercings that were typically invisible on her face. Occasionally, you can see them pop into existence, which was really weird. As per usual, The Signifier is far from a long game. I think it’ll take most players about 4.5 hours to play through. Additional playthroughs can take less than two, though, which makes getting other endings a breeze. I wouldn’t say that these endings are really worth the effort, though. They have something interesting to say about the game’s central themes, but you’re still putting a couple of hours or so in mostly for a minute or two of new stuff at the very end. I feel so hollow The Signifier‘s ending is fairly anticlimactic and a little disappointing, but by design. Don’t get me wrong, it was pretty good and didn’t do too much to damage the rest of the game’s events, but I certainly wanted a bit more closure and elaboration. The story’s details are fairly ripe for analysis, though, and this is definitely a game where the answers you find on your own will be more worthwhile than what is directly presented to you. Overall, I enjoyed my time with The Signifier, even if I’m not exactly happy with how things went. But the game wants you to be conflicted and ask questions. Some aspects of it are janky and it isn’t particularly lengthy, but anyone intrigued by the premise will find a good story and a solid foundation worth unearthing. System Requirements Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system. OS: Windows 7. Processor: Intel Core i3 (3.4 GHz) / AMD A8-7600 (3.1 GHz) Memory: 8 GB RAM. Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 660 / AMD R9 270. DirectX: Version 11. Storage: 20 GB available space.

A poster on the Chinese Bilibilli forums has managed to grab one of Intel's (yet unreleased) Rocket Lake SKUs, the Core i5-11500, and focused exclusively on benchmarking the chips integrated graphics. The chip comes with Intel's most powerful desktop iGP to date, the UHD 750 which promises to be significantly faster than its predecessors. According to the latest scuttlebutt, Intel will offer two Xe iGP variants for Rocket Lake-S. One configuration consists of the UHD Graphics 750 (GT1) engine with 32EUs, and the other is a less powerful variant called the UHD Graphics 730 (GT1) with 24 EUs. Luckily we get to see the performance of the more powerful UHD 750 graphics today. The tester ran 3DMark TimeSpy on both the Core i5-11500 and the Core i5-10400, the Rocket Lake chip managed a score of 11500 points and 10400 points for the older Comet Lake part. It's cool to see Intel's new desktop Xe integrated graphics in action; the tester also showcased League of Legends and CSGO gameplay, and most of the time the frame for both games was above 100FPS at a resolution of 1080P, which is very respectable for an integrated graphics chip. But Intel is not done with Xe graphics, there are also rumors that Intel's 12th Gen Core architecture, Alder Lake, (Tweeted by @Komachi) will receive an upgraded Intel Xe chip with 96EUs. This would theoretically triple the performance of Rocket Lake's UHD 750 graphics. It's great to see Intel getting competitive again with its integrated graphics performance. Hopefully the company will continue to keep increasing the performance of its IGPs with each new generation, which would be a nice change of pace from the multiple rounds of Gen9-based chips.

Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker was revealed during the FFXIV announcement showcase--it's the next expansion for the MMORPG, and it came with a teaser trailer and several details outlined by director and producer Naoki Yoshida. While there are wild implications for where the story is going next, that wasn't all that the FFXIV team had in store. A new Live Letter from the Producer stream followed the showcase to detail FFXIV patch 5.5, which will lead into the Endwalker expansion. It's a two-part update that's called Death Unto Dawn and will set players up for the Endwalker story. The first part will go live on April 13, which lines up with the PlayStation 5 open beta for FFXIV, and the second part is set for the end of May, which comes after the digital FFXIV Fan Fest event (scheduled for May 15 and 16). The following details may contain spoilers for those not caught up in FFXIV's main story. Now Playing: Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker Teaser Trailer Screenshots shared in the Live Letter stream show a gathering of several major characters who represent the various regions across FFXIV's world, and this is likely about the events that happened at the very end of the 5.4 storyline. The new main story dungeon was also teased--it's called Palgth'an and looks like it could be the beginning of destruction across Eorzea (which has been alluded to in the narrative and Endwalker details). Palgth'an is compatible with the Trust system so you can take AI characters with you. No Caption Provided Patch 5.5 will feature the conclusion to the Sorrow of Werlyt optional questline. This also comes with a new trial boss fight called The Cloud Deck and it'll pit eight players against Diamond Weapon--an Extreme difficulty version will also be available. As expected, the third part to the 24-player Nier Automata crossover alliance raid series will be included in patch 5.5. The subtitle to this part is being held as a secret, and Yoshida-san teased that Nier series creator Yoko Taro (who's been working on the raids) might have surprises in store. He also mentioned that they're calling this a third chapter to the raid series and not the final chapter--we're not sure what this could mean or if it hints at future content. We did get a teaser screenshot with what looks a lot like the a Seed of Destruction from Drakengard.

The production version of the ID.Roomzz concept, the future Volkswagen ID.6 is already showing on the web in its final form. If there is one group that is deeply involved in electricity, it is undoubtedly Volkswagen. If the Wolfsburg firm narrowly missed the target set by the European Union and therefore suffered a heavy fine for half a gram too much, we cannot however say that it did not do effort. And for good reason, whether with his new ID.3 and ID.4but also with the technical cousin of the latter, the Skoda Enyaq, the German company has given itself the means to succeed. And it seems far from over, as Volkswagen wants to expand its zero-emission range, offering a production version of each of the concepts of the ID family unveiled in recent years. It is already done while the brand therefore offers a compact and a small electric SUV. But it wants to go even further, with a more spacious model, called ID.6, and inspired by the ID.Roomzz style study , unveiled in 2019. Reserved for the Chinese market and revealed a little later in the year, this large SUV did not, however, wait to show itself, while images have leaked on the net. The opportunity to learn more about the style of this newcomer in the catalog, which broadly incorporates the stylistic identity of the other models in the ID range. The light signature therefore remains close to that inaugurated on the Volkswagen ID.3 , nevertheless evolving very slightly and gaining in aggressiveness. At the rear, the whole is much more loaded than our European models, which play the card of a very refined style. Overall, the SUV does not skimp on tricks to impose as much as possible, whether with its wide grille and plastic side guards. Using the MEB platform of ID.3 and ID.4, this ID.6should display generous dimensions, with a length of 4.8 meters by 1.8 meters wide. Beautiful measurements which suggest a large space on board, while seven people should be able to take place. The interior has not yet been shown, but the presentation should remain in the same vein as that of the other models in the ID range, ie relatively simple with a touch screen placed on the dashboard. No surprises under the hood Logically, this new Volkswagen should take over the engines of its two electric sisters, as well as the Skoda Enyaq . If further details should be revealed a bit later, the top-of-the-range version should undoubtedly be equipped with an 82 kWh battery then offering a maximum range of 500 kilometers. Other variants could also emerge, as on its Czech cousin, with batteries of 55 and 66 kWh, while the powers will then oscillate between 150 and 300 horses approximately. The large SUV should then be compatible with a recharge of up to 125 kW, then allowing the battery to go from 10 to 80% in just about thirty minutes. Anyway, it will take a little more patience before discovering this Volkswagen ID.6, which should first be sold in China before eventually arriving here. It should then compete head-on with the Tesla Model Y .

According to the World Health Organization, the number of people diagnosed with cancer increased by almost 10 million in the past two decades. Of the newly diagnosed cancers, breast cancer is the most common (12%), followed by lung cancer (11%), colorectal cancer (10%) and prostate cancer (7%). By 2040, it has been predicted that the number of newly diagnosed cases of cancer will be nearly 50% higher than in 2020, reports WHO. Several cancers can be cured if they are diagnosed on time and treated properly. Vaccination can help preventing certain cancers like cervical cancer (HPV vaccine) and liver cancer (hepatitis B). Ways to lower your risk of cancer Believe it or not, several kinds of cancers can be prevented and well-managed by following a healthy lifestyle. WHO shared some of these lifestyle measures on Instagram recently. Here are they: 1. Do not use tobacco Tobacco use is considered to be a leading cause of cancer and death from cancer, according to National Cancer Institute. Regular use of tobacco or being exposed to secondhand smoke can increase risk of cancer. Cancers of Lung, larynx, mouth, throat, oesophagus, kidney, liver, stomach, colon, pancreas, rectum and cervix can be caused by use of tobacco. Quit smoking and tobacco use in all forms in order to reduce the risk of cancer. Also read: What Happens When You Quit Smoking? Tips To Deal With Withdrawal Symptoms 2. Exercise regularly The American Cancer Society says that being regular at exercise can reduce the risk of 13 kinds of cancer including that of oesophagus, liver, stomach, kidneys, myeloid leukemia, multiple myeloma, head and neck, rectum, bladder and lungs. Make sure that you do 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise or 90 minutes of high intensity exercise every week. Apart from exercising regularly, it is also important to stay physically active throughout the day and prevent long hours of sitting. Drink less alcohol The less alcohol you drink, the lower is your risk of cancer. Excessive intake of alcohol on a regular basis can increase the risk of cancer of the mouth and throat, oesophagus, colon and rectum, liver and breast (in women), according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. All kinds of alcoholic drinks, including cocktails, red wine and white wine, are linked to cancer. The more you drink, the higher is your risk of cancer. Also read: Increased Stress, Disturbed Sleep And Other Risks Associated With Drinking Too Much Alcohol 4. Avoid direct sunlight for long periods of time Exposure to the ultraviolet radiation of the sun can result in early ageing of the skin and can also increase the risk of skin cancer. The National Cancer Institute instructs that sun's rays are strongest between 10 am to 4 pm. They can go through light clothing, windshields, windows and clouds. They can be reflected by sand, water, snow, ice and pavement. Avoid spending too much time in the sun and do not forget to apply sunscreen. 5. Eat a healthy diet A healthy a nourishing diet can take you a long way in terms of building immunity and being cancer and disease-free. Avoid processed and packaged foods and stick to naturally grown, organic and homemade foods most of the times. Your diet should include lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lentils, legumes, nuts and seeds.

Google on Friday removed 25 Android apps from the Google Play Store after missing them during a prior purge. The apps contained the X-Mode SDK that the Chocolate Factory previously banned for selling location data. “Due to an oversight during our enforcement process, 25 apps containing the X-Mode SDK were not removed from Google Play after the developers were given a 7-day warning," a Google spokesperson said in a statement emailed to The Register. "After learning of the error, we immediately removed the apps." The SDK gathers location data that X-Mode, a Reston, Virginia-based data broker, then sells to third-parties. In early December, Google and Apple gave mobile app developers seven days and two weeks respectively to jettison the X-Mode SDK, a software library the developers had integrated into their apps in exchange for payment – "$10K or more a month," the data biz claims. X-Mode maintains that it does not collect personally identifiable information such as names or email addresses, even though location data can help identify someone. It promises "automated privacy compliance" with the California Consumer Privacy Act and Europe's GDPR laws, which doesn't appear to have swayed Apple or Google from disallowing the technology. Or rather disallowing the technology in theory. In late January, ExpressVPN, in conjunction with Paris-based Defensive Lab Agency, published a report identifying 450 Android apps, with 1.7bn downloads between them, that had incorporated the location-harvesting SDK, and claiming that hundreds were still available at the end of last month. When we reported on the findings earlier this week, Google told us that all Android apps with X-Mode's code had been removed. But ExpressVPN told us that 25 privacy-violating apps remained and provided The Register with a list that we then presented to Google for verification. The VPN biz suggested that its initial report helped hasten Google's removal of the non-compliant apps but also said that 25 out of 199 it had analyzed identified still contained X-Mode. The majority of these were city guide apps, which present themselves as aids to travelers and would not raise eyebrows when seeking permission to use location data. "We note that the remaining apps containing X-Mode have been downloaded more than 12 million times from Google Play, that older versions of apps containing X-Mode still persist on consumer smartphones and alternative app stores for Android, and, most importantly, that the privacy problems posed by location surveillance are not limited to X-Mode," said Sean O'Brien, principal researcher for ExpressVPN Digital Security Lab.
