  3. Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker was revealed during the FFXIV announcement showcase--it's the next expansion for the MMORPG, and it came with a teaser trailer and several details outlined by director and producer Naoki Yoshida. While there are wild implications for where the story is going next, that wasn't all that the FFXIV team had in store. A new Live Letter from the Producer stream followed the showcase to detail FFXIV patch 5.5, which will lead into the Endwalker expansion. It's a two-part update that's called Death Unto Dawn and will set players up for the Endwalker story. The first part will go live on April 13, which lines up with the PlayStation 5 open beta for FFXIV, and the second part is set for the end of May, which comes after the digital FFXIV Fan Fest event (scheduled for May 15 and 16). The following details may contain spoilers for those not caught up in FFXIV's main story. Now Playing: Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker Teaser Trailer Screenshots shared in the Live Letter stream show a gathering of several major characters who represent the various regions across FFXIV's world, and this is likely about the events that happened at the very end of the 5.4 storyline. The new main story dungeon was also teased--it's called Palgth'an and looks like it could be the beginning of destruction across Eorzea (which has been alluded to in the narrative and Endwalker details). Palgth'an is compatible with the Trust system so you can take AI characters with you. No Caption Provided Patch 5.5 will feature the conclusion to the Sorrow of Werlyt optional questline. This also comes with a new trial boss fight called The Cloud Deck and it'll pit eight players against Diamond Weapon--an Extreme difficulty version will also be available. As expected, the third part to the 24-player Nier Automata crossover alliance raid series will be included in patch 5.5. The subtitle to this part is being held as a secret, and Yoshida-san teased that Nier series creator Yoko Taro (who's been working on the raids) might have surprises in store. He also mentioned that they're calling this a third chapter to the raid series and not the final chapter--we're not sure what this could mean or if it hints at future content. We did get a teaser screenshot with what looks a lot like the a Seed of Destruction from Drakengard.
  4. The production version of the ID.Roomzz concept, the future Volkswagen ID.6 is already showing on the web in its final form. If there is one group that is deeply involved in electricity, it is undoubtedly Volkswagen. If the Wolfsburg firm narrowly missed the target set by the European Union and therefore suffered a heavy fine for half a gram too much, we cannot however say that it did not do effort. And for good reason, whether with his new ID.3 and ID.4but also with the technical cousin of the latter, the Skoda Enyaq, the German company has given itself the means to succeed. And it seems far from over, as Volkswagen wants to expand its zero-emission range, offering a production version of each of the concepts of the ID family unveiled in recent years. It is already done while the brand therefore offers a compact and a small electric SUV. But it wants to go even further, with a more spacious model, called ID.6, and inspired by the ID.Roomzz style study , unveiled in 2019. Reserved for the Chinese market and revealed a little later in the year, this large SUV did not, however, wait to show itself, while images have leaked on the net. The opportunity to learn more about the style of this newcomer in the catalog, which broadly incorporates the stylistic identity of the other models in the ID range. The light signature therefore remains close to that inaugurated on the Volkswagen ID.3 , nevertheless evolving very slightly and gaining in aggressiveness. At the rear, the whole is much more loaded than our European models, which play the card of a very refined style. Overall, the SUV does not skimp on tricks to impose as much as possible, whether with its wide grille and plastic side guards. Using the MEB platform of ID.3 and ID.4, this ID.6should display generous dimensions, with a length of 4.8 meters by 1.8 meters wide. Beautiful measurements which suggest a large space on board, while seven people should be able to take place. The interior has not yet been shown, but the presentation should remain in the same vein as that of the other models in the ID range, ie relatively simple with a touch screen placed on the dashboard. No surprises under the hood Logically, this new Volkswagen should take over the engines of its two electric sisters, as well as the Skoda Enyaq . If further details should be revealed a bit later, the top-of-the-range version should undoubtedly be equipped with an 82 kWh battery then offering a maximum range of 500 kilometers. Other variants could also emerge, as on its Czech cousin, with batteries of 55 and 66 kWh, while the powers will then oscillate between 150 and 300 horses approximately. The large SUV should then be compatible with a recharge of up to 125 kW, then allowing the battery to go from 10 to 80% in just about thirty minutes. Anyway, it will take a little more patience before discovering this Volkswagen ID.6, which should first be sold in China before eventually arriving here. It should then compete head-on with the Tesla Model Y .
  5. Uefa's plan for a 'Swiss-style' Champions League from 2024 has received cautious support from the European Leagues group. But among the issues still causing concern is fixture congestion and how to allocate two of the extra four slots in the expanded tournament. A possible post-Christmas play-off to get down to the final 16 clubs is also a matter of contention. The Europa League and new Conference League's composition is another issue. Uefa hopes to be able to confirm the new structure by its 20 April executive committee meeting. The new format would involve 36 clubs instead of 32, in what is effectively one big league, but playing only 10 matches. Who teams play would be determined by their ranking, with the league stage replacing the current group phase. It is Uefa's attempt to head off the threat of a European Super League, discussions around which BBC Sport understands are still continuing, by providing more games between big clubs. However, creating four additional pre-Christmas slots for matches will not be easy, especially in England where the calendar is already at breaking point. Fifa issues threat over Super League European Super League: Poll finds younger fans happier about prospect "The so-called 'Swiss Model' is an improvement compared to the more radical proposals that emerged in 2019," said the European Leagues Group in a statement. But the body, which represents 37 professional football leagues and associations of clubs from 30 countries, also "raised strong concerns about more matchdays... in an already very congested calendar". It also questioned "the possible impact of access as well as commercial components on the sporting and financial balance of domestic leagues". The post-2024 grand plan A 36-team Champions League. There would be 32 places allocated as at present (26 automatic qualifiers, six qualifiers, including four from the Champions Path). An additional four places to include a third automatic place to the fifth-ranked Uefa country and an additional qualifier through the Champions Path, with two places decided on co-efficient, the teams must have qualified for one of the other Uefa competitions to access this. Ten matches, played before Christmas. Every team plays a similar range of opponents of differing strengths with final places decided by an overall league table. Potentially, a play-off round featuring teams finishing from ninth to 24th. Two-legged knock-out matches from the last 16 onwards. Europa League and Conference League potentially remaining in the usual format of four-team groups to reduce overall costs. It is understood the Premier League as a whole is unimpressed by the concept, specifically because of the strain it will put on the domestic calendar. Unless Fifa changes the current structure of international football, clashes between competitions, such as the one that ended up with Tottenham playing an EFL Cup tie and a Europa League qualifier in the same week at the end of September are inevitable. There are also likely to be disagreements over the two 'wild cards' which appear designed to be a safety net for the biggest clubs in Europe should they fail to qualify through their domestic league placings. European Super League backdrop Uefa competition reform is being framed against ongoing discussions about a 20-team European Super League. Despite last month's threat by world governing body Fifa to ban all players who took part in such a competition from appearing in a World Cup, it is understood the concept is still being discussed at senior level at many of Europe's major clubs. On Monday, La Liga president Javier Tebas challenged Fifa counterpart Gianni Infantino to clarify his involvement in ESL discussions and say whether the name that appears as the code W01 in documents distributed by those involved in the Super League plan actually refers to the Fifa chief. Infantino is yet to respond to Tebas' comments. There has been speculation that the clubs who are likely participants in a European Super League - 16 of which would go straight into the competition - want to assess Uefa's model before deciding whether to proceed with its plan or not.
  6. According to the World Health Organization, the number of people diagnosed with cancer increased by almost 10 million in the past two decades. Of the newly diagnosed cancers, breast cancer is the most common (12%), followed by lung cancer (11%), colorectal cancer (10%) and prostate cancer (7%). By 2040, it has been predicted that the number of newly diagnosed cases of cancer will be nearly 50% higher than in 2020, reports WHO. Several cancers can be cured if they are diagnosed on time and treated properly. Vaccination can help preventing certain cancers like cervical cancer (HPV vaccine) and liver cancer (hepatitis B). Ways to lower your risk of cancer Believe it or not, several kinds of cancers can be prevented and well-managed by following a healthy lifestyle. WHO shared some of these lifestyle measures on Instagram recently. Here are they: 1. Do not use tobacco Tobacco use is considered to be a leading cause of cancer and death from cancer, according to National Cancer Institute. Regular use of tobacco or being exposed to secondhand smoke can increase risk of cancer. Cancers of Lung, larynx, mouth, throat, oesophagus, kidney, liver, stomach, colon, pancreas, rectum and cervix can be caused by use of tobacco. Quit smoking and tobacco use in all forms in order to reduce the risk of cancer. Also read: What Happens When You Quit Smoking? Tips To Deal With Withdrawal Symptoms 2. Exercise regularly The American Cancer Society says that being regular at exercise can reduce the risk of 13 kinds of cancer including that of oesophagus, liver, stomach, kidneys, myeloid leukemia, multiple myeloma, head and neck, rectum, bladder and lungs. Make sure that you do 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise or 90 minutes of high intensity exercise every week. Apart from exercising regularly, it is also important to stay physically active throughout the day and prevent long hours of sitting. Drink less alcohol The less alcohol you drink, the lower is your risk of cancer. Excessive intake of alcohol on a regular basis can increase the risk of cancer of the mouth and throat, oesophagus, colon and rectum, liver and breast (in women), according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. All kinds of alcoholic drinks, including cocktails, red wine and white wine, are linked to cancer. The more you drink, the higher is your risk of cancer. Also read: Increased Stress, Disturbed Sleep And Other Risks Associated With Drinking Too Much Alcohol 4. Avoid direct sunlight for long periods of time Exposure to the ultraviolet radiation of the sun can result in early ageing of the skin and can also increase the risk of skin cancer. The National Cancer Institute instructs that sun's rays are strongest between 10 am to 4 pm. They can go through light clothing, windshields, windows and clouds. They can be reflected by sand, water, snow, ice and pavement. Avoid spending too much time in the sun and do not forget to apply sunscreen. 5. Eat a healthy diet A healthy a nourishing diet can take you a long way in terms of building immunity and being cancer and disease-free. Avoid processed and packaged foods and stick to naturally grown, organic and homemade foods most of the times. Your diet should include lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lentils, legumes, nuts and seeds.

  8. Google on Friday removed 25 Android apps from the Google Play Store after missing them during a prior purge. The apps contained the X-Mode SDK that the Chocolate Factory previously banned for selling location data. “Due to an oversight during our enforcement process, 25 apps containing the X-Mode SDK were not removed from Google Play after the developers were given a 7-day warning," a Google spokesperson said in a statement emailed to The Register. "After learning of the error, we immediately removed the apps." The SDK gathers location data that X-Mode, a Reston, Virginia-based data broker, then sells to third-parties. In early December, Google and Apple gave mobile app developers seven days and two weeks respectively to jettison the X-Mode SDK, a software library the developers had integrated into their apps in exchange for payment – "$10K or more a month," the data biz claims. X-Mode maintains that it does not collect personally identifiable information such as names or email addresses, even though location data can help identify someone. It promises "automated privacy compliance" with the California Consumer Privacy Act and Europe's GDPR laws, which doesn't appear to have swayed Apple or Google from disallowing the technology. Or rather disallowing the technology in theory. In late January, ExpressVPN, in conjunction with Paris-based Defensive Lab Agency, published a report identifying 450 Android apps, with 1.7bn downloads between them, that had incorporated the location-harvesting SDK, and claiming that hundreds were still available at the end of last month. When we reported on the findings earlier this week, Google told us that all Android apps with X-Mode's code had been removed. But ExpressVPN told us that 25 privacy-violating apps remained and provided The Register with a list that we then presented to Google for verification. The VPN biz suggested that its initial report helped hasten Google's removal of the non-compliant apps but also said that 25 out of 199 it had analyzed identified still contained X-Mode. The majority of these were city guide apps, which present themselves as aids to travelers and would not raise eyebrows when seeking permission to use location data. "We note that the remaining apps containing X-Mode have been downloaded more than 12 million times from Google Play, that older versions of apps containing X-Mode still persist on consumer smartphones and alternative app stores for Android, and, most importantly, that the privacy problems posed by location surveillance are not limited to X-Mode," said Sean O'Brien, principal researcher for ExpressVPN Digital Security Lab.
  9. It's still almost impossible to buy an RTX 3080 GPU on its own. But that doesn't mean you can't get your hands on them, or even that you need to pay more than MSRP price for one. If you're willing to buy a pre-built PC, you can snag up the best graphics card on the market right now. And thanks to a new deal on the HP Omen 30L Desktop, you can do so in a slick case and with a $200 discount. The default build comes with an Intel Core i7-10700K processor, 16GB of HyperX RAM and a 512GB WD Black SSD for $1,999. But there's plenty of upgradeability available at checkout too, including an i9 CPU and high storage and memory capacities. Regardless of your config, you'll still get the $200 discount at checkout. Just apply the code 10HOLIDAYGAMER2020 and you'll be good to go. The only downside here is that shipping is estimated to start on March 3rd, so you might have to wait a month to get your order. But considering RTX 3080 availability, a month is still sooner than you'll see elsewhere.

  12. A few days ago we told you that, as sti[CENSORED]ted, NVIDIA will launch the new RTX 3060 graphics on the 25th of this month, and in fact some retailers are already listing this GPU in their online stores, admitting pre-orders and reservations. Now we get the information that an official NVIDIA distributor in Pakistan is skipping the NDA and has started selling Palit's RTX 3060 openly, and at a totally outrageous price. Are the distributors themselves speculating? It is quite common for South Asian retailers to not respect confidentiality agreements with manufacturers, but there is a stretch from that to openly selling graphics that have not yet been officially announced. For more INRI, they are selling them for approximately double their official price, so there is a clear profit motive in this action. RTX 3060 graphics now on sale in Pakistan It is assumed that the official price of the RTX 3060 is 329 euros, although it is true that today this does not mean much and more when this GPU is not going to be launched in reference models but we will only see custom models by the assemblers , whose price can be quite high. In any case, the Pakistani distributor ZAH Computers, has begun to sell the Palit GeForce RTX 3060 Dual OC models at a price of 120,000 PKR (Pakistani Rupees), the equivalent of about 620 euros at the exchange rate and which is almost double the price. NVIDIA recommended retail. Graphics RTX 3060 Pakistan The seller justifies this price by blaming the high customs fees and the import prices of this graphics card, which in a few words is known to be nothing but excuses behind which this type of distributors has been hiding for many years to raise prices and get more benefits; they are clearly speculating to profit from these sales. The bad news, relative to the price, is that it is quite possible that these prices will not drop when the RTX 3060 go to light next February 25. Unlike preliminary pre-order prices in the EU and US markets, Pakistani prices will remain intact and indeed are likely to rise due to rising inflation and the declining value of its currency against the dollar and the currency. euro. According to the source, this ZAH Computers store has already sold quite a few units and, in fact, they have enough stock for those users willing to pay these prices. We have to remember that with the same amount of money you can buy (if you find it in stock) an RTX 3070. NVIDIA Ampere graphics Initially, the Ampere architecture debuted with the launch of the RTX 3080 on September 17, 2020, closely followed by the top of the range, the RTX 3090 on the 24th of the same month. After that, the launch of the RTX 3070 followed already on October 27, and it was not until December 2 that the RTX 3060 Ti made its appearance. Now, the RTX 3060 will be launched on February 25, so as you can see NVIDIA is going from top to bottom and with a fairly large gap between releases, something that in theory should allow to accumulate stock so that there is no shortage.
  13. Apple has launched a new Chrome extension to help iCloud users remember their passwords. The new iCloud Passwords tool will sync passwords between the Safari and Chrome web browsers. “iCloud Passwords is a Chrome extension for Windows users that allows you to use the same strong Safari passwords you create on your iPhone, iPad or Mac when visiting websites in Chrome on your Windows PC,” the Chrome web store explains. “iCloud Passwords also saves any new passwords you create in Chrome to your iCloud Keychain so that they are also available on your Apple devices.” Users of iCloud for Windows will now see a new “Passwords” section under the list of available services (providing they have updated to version 12.0). By then clicking “Apply,” they will be redirected to download the new Chrome extension. Check out our roundup of the best password managers We've assembled a list of the best anonymous browsers Also, here's our list of the best password management software around Password protected Once the iCloud Passwords extension is running, Chrome users will gain access to the passwords that they have created, had automatically generated, or saved in Safari for macOS or iOS. The feature also works reciprocally, with any passwords stored in Chrome also becoming available on iPhone, iPad, and other Apple devices. The new extension becomes part of a relatively small group of tools that Apple offers on the Windows ecosystem. Before the launch of iCloud Passwords, Apple’s only Windows solutions of note, besides iTunes, were iCloud Bookmarks for older PCs, and Apple TV+ for Xbox users. Password management remains a hot topic in the security sector, however, particularly as a huge number of data leaks still occur due to inadequate password protection. The new iCloud sync tool should help prevent password fatigue for Chrome users, encouraging them to use stronger credentials.
  14. Fortnite has added new Predator challenges with the most recent update. Players will need to complete them in order to unlock the intergalactic hunter. Predator isn't available itself yet, but you can get lots of cosmetic goodies in the meantime. One challenge will send you to three different locations across the map in order to talk to different NPCs. The challenge is to talk with Beef Boss, Remedy, and Dummy. The challenges were first made available on January 13. You can complete them now but need to be careful in case others are nearby and could get an easy kill on you. Now, where's the beef? We will help you find it! Or at least the beef's boss. 15. Bernie Sanders’ Inauguration Day meme has not only become very po[CENSORED]r, but it has also helped charities raise money. Soon after the Vermont senator’s picture — sitting on a folding chair at the Capitol, wearing a jacket and mittens–went viral, his campaign team came up with the “Chairman Sanders” sweatshirt, followed by other merchandise, featuri ng the picture. The proceeds from the sales were to go to charities in Vermont. The senator’s office recently announced that the merchandise had raised almost $1.8 million (Rs 13,12,93,800) that Sanders and his wife Jane said would go to their home state charities including local Meals on Wheels group, local senior centers, the Vermont Parent Child Network and others. Sanders was quoted as saying in a statement, “We’re glad we can use my internet fame to help Vermonters in need. But even this amount of money is no substitute for action by Congress, and I will be doing everything I can in Washington to make sure working people in Vermont and across the country get the relief they need in the middle of the worst crisis we’ve faced since the Great Depression.”
  16. Health Secretary Matt Hancock has urged people to, "stay at home and reduce all social contact that is not absolutely necessary". But are people acting on his advice and how does their behaviour compare with previous lockdowns? What does the data show? People are leaving their homes more than during the first days of the March lockdown, according to data from several sources. Apple and Google collect "mobility data", which is pulled together by recording the location histories on people's mobile devices. They then take that data and compare how different it is to a national "baseline" established in early 2020, before the pandemic started. We used the data to look at what it showed for the first Friday of each lockdown in England : lockdown one (which began on 23 March, 2020) lockdown two (which began on 5 November 2020) lockdown three (which began on 5 January 2021) The Google data covers England, Scotland and Wales, while the Apple data also includes Northern Ireland. We are looking at this data relative to English lockdown rules. This means that in November, during England's second lockdown, the data might be slightly swayed by mobility in other nations with less strict coronavirus restrictions. Both now and in March, all countries had "stay at home" rules at the same time. Data from Apple's mobility report shows that on the first Friday of the most recent lockdown, people were driving and walking around at twice the rate of the first lockdown. Public transport use was also higher. Chart showing apple mobility data Similarly, data from Google gives us more clues about activity outside the home. Workplaces appear noticeably busier than in the first lockdown but the gap is smaller when it comes to parks and supermarkets. It's worth noting that in both the Google and Apple reports, people appear to be moving around a lot less during lockdown three than in lockdown two in November. Chartg shwoing google mobility data Separate data from the route-search app Citymapper shows about twice as many routes were planned in Birmingham, Manchester and London in early January 2021 compared with March 2020. Are more people breaking the rules then? It's important to note that increased levels of activity - compared with the first lockdown - don't necessarily mean more people are flouting the rules. Could I be fined for breaking lockdown rules? Fines 'increasingly likely' for rule-breakers More things are open now compared with March last year, including nurseries, garden centres and estate agents. This could explain why more people are going to work. And while these numbers suggest more movement, the Office for National Statistics' weekly survey (conducted over the Christmas period) on attitudes to coronavirus, suggests almost 80% of people in Great Britain still support restrictions. The same survey shows that over the course of the pandemic (even when rules were loosened) around nine in 10 people say they have consistently followed social distancing and contact rules. This survey is regularly updated but has not yet covered the third lockdown. Banner image reading 'more about coronavirus' SYMPTOMS: What are they and how to guard against them? TESTING: How do I get a virus test? SUPPORT BUBBLES: What are they and who can be in yours? TEST AND TRACE: How does it work? Banner But police officers across the country have reported some elements of lockdown fatigue. Paul Netherton, deputy chief constable of Devon and Cornwall Police, told BBC Breakfast: "I think people are beginning to get fed up with it. I can understand that but we have to be firm, we have to save lives, we have to make sure people are keeping apart, isolating and staying at home." The Office for National Statistics' survey also notes an increased pessimism - over time - about when the crisis might end.
  17. What is the "Rename multiple photos or files at once" video tutorial? The video tutorial is about renaming many photos or files at once. Specifically, how to rename files from something unclear to meaningful names; and for multiple files at once. Why rename photos, videos, or other files? You have certainly noticed that when taking pictures with a camera; be it a compact camera, dslr, no mirror or even a phone, the files generated are named "P108493.jpg" or "DSG0985.jpg". These are filenames that make no sense; which shows us nothing without seeing what the file contains. That is why it is a good idea to rename files; and to avoid wasting time, we will rename them all at once. I have two methods for you to rename multiple photos 1. Method 1 for renaming group photos: Even in Windows Explorer, we can rename multiple photos at once. All you have to do is select all the files you want to rename, press F2 (or right-click / rename). We then choose a name that tells us where the photos were taken and when. For example, "Munte_Busteni_Iulie_2017", and after finishing, I would hit Enter. Later we will notice that all files are renamed; in addition, each received a unique number (1), (2), (3), etc. 2. Method 2 for renaming photos or group files: Here we will use a free application which is very interesting; in the sense that it can extract different data from exif; data that we can display in the name we choose. I found it extremely useful to choose a name to describe the location; in addition to using the exact date and time the picture was taken. So you can instantly find a photo taken on the morning of July 3, 2018; without looking at photos, for example. Video Tutorial - Rename multiple photos or files at once
  18. The UK's motor industry could suffer production losses of £55bn over the next five years if no Brexit deal is agreed, the sector's lobby group says. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders is urging the government to get a deal that avoids resorting to tariffs under World Trade Organization rules. The automotive sector across Europe has already been badly hit by the pandemic, the SMMT said. A further blow from trade tariffs would set it back further, it added. The UK is currently in a transition period, having left the European Union on 31 January, but this transition period ends in 38 days. An exit from the period without a deal minimising trade barriers including tariffs would have "a severe impact on the sector's ability to develop and manufacture the next generation of zero emission cars and vans, as well as holding back market uptake of these vehicles," the SMMT said. "Automotive is nothing if not determined, adaptable and resilient, yet, as the clock ticks ever closer to midnight on Brexit negotiations, the competitiveness and employment we need get back to growth - green growth - hangs in the balance," said the group's chief executive, Mike Hawes. World Trade Organization (WTO) tariffs would cost the UK car business £55.4bn by 2025 with annual production falling below one million units, the SMMT estimates. The government did not immediately respond to a request for comment. UK car production suffered its slowest September since 1995 as the pandemic continued to batter demand, industry figures published last month showed. Just 114,732 vehicles rolled off production lines in the month, down 5% on September last year. UK and European carmakers have warned that a no-deal Brexit could put a £100bn dent in the region's car industry in the next five years, adding to heavy losses already caused by Covid-19. A letter signed by 23 trade groups across Europe in September urged the government to make a deal rather than default to WTO rules. A deal is seen as crucial because of how interconnected the industry is, with parts passing many borders as a car is assembled

  20. project Fresh from spells at Southampton, Tottenham and Red Bull it is now Mitchell’s job to bring the cycle of boom and bust at the Ligue 1 club to an end The view from the window of Paul Mitchell’s office provides a neat visual metaphor for the task he took on when he was appointed sporting director of Monaco in June last year. Yards away beyond the glass, the finishing touches are being applied to the club’s brand new performance centre. Nestling against a rockface in the old stone quarry that has been Monaco’s training base since 1981, the gleaming, state-of-the-art facility has been constructed at a cost of €55million and is due to be completed in March. As workmen scuttle around the site, Mitchell continues work on his own building project. Renowned as one of Europe’s leading talent-spotters following his spells at Southampton, Tottenham and RB Leipzig, the 39-year-old Mancunian was tempted away from his role as technical director of Red Bull’s football division last summer by the ambitious vision of Monaco’s billionaire owner Dmitry Rybolovlev and the appeal of being able to once again focus all his energy upon a single club. In return, he was charged with the responsibility of putting down solid foundations in a place of shifting sands. Ligue 1 champions and Champions League semi-finalists in 2017, Monaco were nearly relegated in 2019 and finished last season in ninth place after the French championship was prematurely curtailed by the coronavirus pandemic. They have also had four coaches in the last two years. It is Mitchell’s job to bring the cycle of boom and bust to an end. “I’ve got to try and find a way to bring back the success, but make that success sustainable – not hitting the heights of the [Champions League] semi-finals and then nearly getting relegated,” he tells The Independent in a video interview. “The foundations are the crucial part. Monaco gets accused of being very volatile and we need to change that.” An uncompromising workaholic (he confesses he can be a “nightmare” to work with), Mitchell arrived in time to make a few adjustments to the plans for the performance centre, notably adding sleep pods to the first-team players’ area in order to aid recovery. He has extensively reshaped Monaco’s support staff too, with James Bunce, who worked with Mitchell at Southampton and has also worked for the Premier League and the US Soccer Federation, coming in as director of performance. Mitchell made his most eye-catching staffing decision within weeks of taking up the role, dismissing Robert Moreno as head coach in late July and replacing the former Spanish national team boss – who had been in the job for less than seven months – with Niko Kovač. The former Bayern Munich coach’s commitment to high-energy football reminded Mitchell of Mauricio Pochettino, who he helped to bring to Southampton in 2013 during his spell as head of recruitment there. But it was a question of substance as well as style. “It was similar to when we did the profiling to bring Mauricio to Southampton,” Mitchell says. “We wanted to see a certain brand of football. Under Robert the team was quite low-energy – it seemed to physically decrease in certain points in games, past the hour-mark – and we wanted to play with this vibrant, aggressive, linear, modern-day philosophy. Niko has that and he’s coached that for many years. Plus he has experience of winning leagues, playing for trophies and managing high-status players day in, day out.”
