Recording raises new questions about police response to fatal crash involving Sen. Bob Menendez's wife Multiple sources are asking why a retired chief of detectives for the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office showed up at the crash scene to apparently assist Nadine Menendez. Police dashcam video and audio recordings are raising new questions about how local police and Bergen County prosecutors handled the 2018 fatal crash investigation involving a woman who soon married New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez. Dashcam video from the scene that evening in Bogota, N.J., shows Nadine Arslanian Menendez saying that she done nothing wrong. At one point, she also asks an officer about the pedestrian who she had just struck and killed, “Why was the guy in the middle of the street?” Several sources familiar with the matter are asking why a retired chief of detectives for the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office showed up at the crash scene to apparently speak to police and assist Nadine Menendez. The sources pointed to one section of the police dashboard video footage where retired the retired chief, Michael Mordaga, is heard asking police what is going on. An officer replies, “That’s what we are gathering now … [it’s] dark… her breath, ya know?” Police reports have suggested there was no signs that Nadine Arslsanian Menendez was driving while impaired at the time of the crash. Police reports also show that no Breathalyzer or other tests were performed on Menendez that night. “One can imagine police ordering someone to at least perform field sobriety tests just based on those words and observations alone,” said NBC legal analyst Danny Cevallos. Investigators said the victim, Richard Kopp, 49, had jaywalked after drinking with friends on the night that Nadine Menendez hit him with her Mercedes. As NBC News first reported, the state attorney general is now investigating whether police and Bergen county prosecutors handled the fatal crash scene appropriately. Nadine Menendez’s connection to the death of Richard Koop has come to light only this week. Mrs. Menendez’s lawyer, David Schertler, said in a statement, “This is a case of a tragic accident, but Nadine Menendez was not at fault, did not violate any laws, and was therefore not charged with any crimes. Schertler added, "We are confident that any 're-opening' of an investigation into the accident will confirm that conclusion.” https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/recording-raises-new-questions-police-response-fatal-crash-involving-s-rcna119311

Domestic dog: essential facts about man's best friend Humans and dogs have been sharing life for millennia, it is not clear how this alliance was forged, but there is no doubt that they have formed a good society. The dog was probably the first animal to be domesticated. And it has accompanied human beings for about 10,000 years. Some scientists claim that all dogs, both domestic and wild, have a common ancestor in the small wolf of Southeast Asia, but there is no scientific consensus on their ancestors or exactly how an ancient alliance between humans and canids occurred. Today, men have crossed hundreds of breeds of domestic dogs, some of which could never survive in the wild. Despite the great diversity of breeds, shapes and sizes, all domestic dogs, whether Labradors, German Shepherds, Poodles or Chihuahuas, are members of the same species: Canis lupus familiaris. Although their way of life is domestic, they are related to wolves, jackals - with which they can have fertile offspring - and foxes, whose interbreeding is rarer. Domestic dogs still share many behavioral patterns with their wild relatives. Both defend their territories and mark them by urinating on trees, stones, fences and other appropriate places. These signals inform other dogs that that territory is occupied by another animal. Many dogs also bury bones or favorite toys with the intention of saving them for the future, just as their wild relatives sometimes bury their dead prey to ensure a feast later. Dogs communicate with each other in different ways. One of them is leaving traces of smell, another is physical gestures. Body posture, the way you move, and facial expression often express direct messages. Many of these signals are recognizable even to humans, who know that a dog is happy when he wags his tail happily in circles or that he is angry or feels threatened when he shows his teeth. Vocally, dogs communicate through a cacophony of sounds that includes barking, growling, and howling. Furthermore, many studies have shown that dogs can understand humans even without having been trained to do so. Furthermore, they have adapted their language to communicate things to us, even with their own interests. It is this capacity for two-way communication - they send us messages that we understand and vice versa - is one of the keys to such a long and prosperous evolution between humans and dogs. https://www.nationalgeographic.es/animales/perro-domestico

Toyota’s US-based design studio Calty (yes, the name is just a mash-up of the words California and Toyota) is celebrating its 50th birthday this year, and its present to itself is this fantastic Baby Lunar Cruiser concept. Better than a pair of novelty socks, that’s for sure. The BLC is “built to conquer rugged terrain on Earth and beyond” says Toyota, although it’s only a concept for now so it’s restricted to doing that in the virtual world. Still, it is an extremely cool thing. And despite the futuristic, extra-terrestrial looks we can clearly see the influences of the original FJ40 Land Cruiser. Pretty neat. We’re told that Calty wanted to blend those classic 4x4 vibes with “the futuristic capabilities of an interplanetary exploration vehicle” and that the BLC also draws some of its inspiration from the real-life Lunar Cruiser that’s being developed by Toyota for the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). https://www.topgear.com/car-news/electric/toyota-baby-lunar-cruiser-a-moon-buggy-inspired-original-fj40-land-cruiser

The form of Kylian Mbappé and his performance during the slap received Wednesday in C1 by PSG on the Newcastle lawn (4-1) raised some questions. Enough to annoy Luis Enrique. With only three victories on the clock after seven days of the championship, Paris Saint-Germain is having one of its worst starts to the season under the QSI era. And if the capital club is currently only fifth, it is perhaps also because its star striker has not been in the best form lately. Because even if he is the current top scorer in the championship with seven goals, Kylian Mbappé has seemed a little behind in recent days, first against Clermont (0-0), then against Newcastle last Wednesday, in the part of the group stage of the Champions League (4-1 defeat). Left injured on September 24 during the “Classique” won by Paris against OM (4-0), Mbappé apparently struggled to get back on track and the criticism was quick to appear . Enough to make Luis Enrique react. https://www.sports.fr/football/ligue-1/mbappe-luis-enrique-sagace-765839.html

This summer two 17-year olds started a blog to answer their peers’ most common problems. Then it took on a life of its own… ia Sugimoto and Sophia Rundle, both 17, met in their freshman year at high school in Washington State, four years ago. They had mutual interests, such as hanging out; they both really liked going to the beach. When they talk about it, I get a Technicolor flash of the intensity of teenage friendships: because it’s not really about the beach, it’s about what they talked about at the beach. Adult affiliations are so functional by comparison. Barely two months ago, Sugimoto had an idea: to start Girlhood, an advice site where teenage girls helped other teenage girls with their dilemmas. “It came from the Barbie movie,” she says. “I felt a feeling of comfort, a safe space around me full of girls, women from my age to their 80s, all crying.” Within three weeks, they had had 20,000 advice submissions, 8 million views, and 85,000 people had followed them on TikTok. “We’ve had over 6,000 people who want to volunteer,” Sugimoto says, which is fortunate as they couldn’t possibly do it all themselves. Indeed, they are both by necessity now mainly in operations, and the volunteer army does the wisdom. They are not registered advice-givers, they stress. “We’re not going to give advice on eating disorders, sexual assault, things like that,” Rundle says. We don’t want to harm our volunteers or the people we’re giving advice to.” Instead, the submissions are the elemental questions of becoming an adult: am I doing this right? Do I have enough friends, am I nice enough to them, are they nice enough to me? How do I get over this guy, or get him back, or get rid of him, or trust him? Am I achieving enough, or am I destined to be a failure? Despite the international reach – they have had messages from Sweden, New Zealand and a number of Asian and African countries – the first volunteer inquiry was from the UK. “A lot of girls have issues that are very similar to ours,” Sugimoto says. Rundle adds: “We both wanted to create a website that encompassed the spirit of big‑sister advice: you can talk to us because we’ve had experiences similar to the ones you’re going through.” If there’s anything dispiriting about reading the problems, it’s how many of them speak to a power imbalance between girls and boys: a lot of heaviness about boys seemingly swimming in and out of relationships without a care in the world, while girls have tried everything to get over them, and are out of ideas. I thought gen Z had somehow reshuffled the deck on who held all the cards. Rundle and Sugimoto both shoot me a look of great patience, before Rundle explains: “We try not to get into the realm of activism, but the submissions are extremely telling about society. Women, psychologically, have a harder time getting over guys, that’s what I’ve seen in Girlhood and in general.” Their advice usually boils down to: “You’ll get over him when you stop thinking about him.” It emphatically doesn’t go with: “Get fake eyelashes and flirt with his best friend”. Other problems a gen X could guess at but not remember: the mind-bending insecurities created by everyone else on social media looking so happy, all the goddam time. It creates all these anxieties; how come you only have three friends, when everyone else has 26? How are you ever going to get into a top university, when that person just hand-reared a panda? “Behind every photo and every post, there’s a deeper meaning,” Sugimoto says. “There’s definitely a facade,” Rundle adds. “For the most part, there would be so much more that is hidden: one person who really doesn’t want to be there; an argument that broke out right after the smiling. People are constantly comparing themselves without knowing the reality of what they are comparing themselves with. Part of what Girlhood stands for is a corner of social media that isn’t intoxicated by trying to be someone you aren’t.” But there’s something else that we, attendant adults, probably could remember if we made more effort. “Adults constantly hold this idea, ‘We’re so much more mature, smarter’, but so many of them forget the visceral feelings that come up when people go through these challenges. It can be heart-shattering. So parents will give you their perspective, their advice, and it’s super bland. If we had one message to tell to adults, if they want to understand the purpose of Girlhood, is that it’s OK not to remember how you felt years and years ago.” It’s OK, that is, to be super bland: but don’t be surprised when your teens get their wisdom elsewhere. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2023/oct/07/teen-girl-problems-being-solved-by-adolescent-agony-aunts-girlhood

Former football star George Weah is running for a second six-year term as Liberia's president, but he appears to have scored an own goal by failing to engage with the topic that is dominating the air waves and mood on the streets - demands to set up an economic and war crimes court. The 57-year-old came into power promising to create jobs, transform lives and set up the court. But after taking office in 2018 he argued that looking backwards at old crimes would not be the best way to achieve development - something 24-year-old Frederick Tulay feels is a mistake. "As a first-time voter in 2017, I believed President Weah. But he has refused to address corruption in the public sector. Many of the youth are using drugs because they are jobless," he told the BBC, saying he would not be voting this time for Mr Weah and his Congress for Democratic Change party. Frederick Tulay, who voted for George Weah in the last election, says the president has let him down Mr Tulay lost his job in a factory for a construction firm two years ago when his former employer could no longer pay his salary. He now works as a taxi driver but business is not flourishing: "The roads are very bad and gas is expensive. My dream is to leave the country." His comments reflect a commonly felt anger - that 20 years after the end of the country's brutal two civil wars, in which an estimated 250,000 died, most people are still struggling to survive. The country operates a dual currency system, meaning those paid in Liberian dollars often need to pay for imported food or other items in US dollars - making life extremely expensive. Two financial scandals over the last few years have also shocked Liberians, leading to the US imposing sanctions on several officials, including Mr Weah's chief of staff. For 49-year-old Peterson Sonyah, failing to address the wounds of the past has led to this culture of impunity. The survivor of a horrific civil war massacre at a church in the capital, Monrovia, he now spends his time campaigning for the perpetrators of the civil wars, and those who profited financially from them, to be prosecuted. As a 16-year-old he sought refuge in the church with his father, who was one of around 600 killed by soldiers in 1990. "When the soldiers ran out of ammunition, some of them went to get more so people tried to escape but the soldiers started attacking them with machetes," he remembers as he points at bullet holes on the windows at St Peter's Lutheran Church. Peterson Sonyah says returning to St Peter's Lutheran Church is a haunting experience The need for a court is urgent, he maintains: "Some people are already telling me that since there's no justice, we should take up arms and start waging war against the people. "They believe if we did that, in the future we would get lucrative jobs and live the best lives because they are seeing the example. We are all human beings, people can get tempted." Nineteen other candidates are challenging Mr Weah for the presidency next Tuesday, including former Vice-President Joseph Boakai, businessman Alexander Cummings and human rights lawyer Tiawan Gongloe. These three contenders have pledged to set up the court if elected - though some have expressed doubts about Mr Boakai's commitment, given his alliance with former warlord Prince Yormie Johnson, now a serving senator. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-67017365

During an online fundraiser, Matt Gaetz denounced the Biden impeachment effort as unserious As the House tries to replace Kevin McCarthy, the future of the impeachment inquiry could become a bargaining chip in the wrangling to win the speakership. WASHINGTON — Days before Rep. Matt Gaetz led an effort to oust Kevin McCarthy as House speaker, Gaetz and Rep. Matt Rosendale, a fellow Freedom Caucus member, denounced as a political stunt Republicans’ high-stakes effort to impeach President Joe Biden, according to a video obtained by NBC News. At an invitation-only fundraiser held over Zoom last week, Gaetz, R-Fla., and Rosendale, who is said to be plotting another Senate run next year, heaped skepticism on the probe. “I don’t believe that we are endeavoring upon a legitimate impeachment of Joe Biden,” Gaetz told Steve Bannon, a podcaster and onetime political adviser to former President Donald Trump, who was moderating the discussion. “They’re trying to engage in a, like, ‘forever war’ of impeachment,” Gaetz said. “And like many of our forever wars, it will drag on forever and end in a bloody draw.” As they fielded questions from high-dollar conservative donors, Gaetz and Rosendale were just days away from moving to end McCarthy’s speakership — and tipping the Republican caucus into its own protracted battle over who will lead the conference. Gaetz, Rosendale and the small faction of Republicans who ousted McCarthy, R-Calif., still hold tremendous leverage as the House tries to find a replacement. Whether the group could seek to use that leverage to extract concessions from the future speaker — including how the House proceeds on issues like impeachment — is yet to be seen. One of the impeachment leaders is also a candidate for speaker, Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio. During the fundraiser, Rosendale joined Gaetz in denouncing the Republicans’ hotly tipped impeachment inquiry. Rosendale likened Congress’ probe of Biden to the federal indictment of the president’s son Hunter, which critics say has been tainted by preferential treatment and argue is a “smokescreen” intended to deflect attention from more serious crimes they accuse Hunter Biden of having committed, like working for foreign interests to influence U.S. policy. “They’re doing the exact same thing,” Rosendale said. Gaetz said: “I just don’t get the sense that it’s for the sake of impeachment. I think it’s for the sake of having another bad thing to say about Joe Biden.” While Republicans have largely united behind the effort, some misgivings have emerged despite Rep. James Comer’s declaration that the probe had “uncovered a mountain of evidence” that Joe Biden had leveraged his position in office for his family’s gain. Still, in the video, Gaetz told the attendees he meant no offense to Jordan or Comer, R-Ky., the chair of the Oversight Committee, who are overseeing the closely watched probes. But, he added, according to the recording, “if this was serious, we would have sent a subpoena to Hunter Biden.” https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/gaetz-biden-impeachment-rosendale-rcna119131

Porsche 924 According to new research, four thousand British pounds is the average a first time driver spends on a used car. So what better way for entry-level drivers to hone their newly-licensed skills than in an entry-level Porsche. Yes, the 924 was designed by Porsche for VW, and eventually built by Audi. But you’re a first time driver! You don’t care about VW Group politics or chassis principles! You care about a front-engined, rear-wheel-drive Porsche that’ll make your Corsa-driving friends pea-green with envy! And quite possibly you care about ruinous insurance costs! In fact, TopGear.com may have entirely misunderstood the brief on this one, because insuring a Porsche - or any of these finds - might prove troublesome. Great Wall Steed In no rational universe can TopGear.com confidently suggest a giant Chinese pick-up truck as a suitable vehicle for a first-time driver. Which is exactly why it features on this really not very serious list. Because if you’re already shopping in the ‘reasonably average car’ section in the classifieds, why not fully embrace that ideal? Cadillac Seville A big, American car designed for European tastes with a big, American V8. You can almost taste the burger n’ fries through the screen, can’t you? Mazda Bongo You’re a first time driver. You're likely a young person. Young people cannot fault the legitimate comedy in a name like Bongo. That it’s actually a nice little van is a bonus. Mercedes-Benz SL The repair bills will likely prove ruinous. And the one we found is only the V6. However… it’s a Mercedes-Benz SL. One of the car world’s ‘great automotive oaks’. Don’t tell your friends you’re driving a ‘great automotive oak’, of course, unless you want them to cease being your friends. Jaguar XJ8 From an era where the word ‘Jaguar’ could only mean an enormously bonneted, V8 saloon. Rolls-Royce Silver Spur II It’s a long-wheelbase version of a luxury British car that’s already very long indeed. Welcome, first time drivers, to possibly one of the cheapest and potentially financially ruinous entry points into the very heart of the British motor industry: a very old 6.75-litre V8 Rolls! Do not think about servicing costs. Or maintenance. Or fuel bills. Or width restrictors. Or the fact this particular example is only offered as a ‘spares or repair’ car. For the sum of £3,695, you’ve got yourself a V8 Rolls that needs a bit of work. But when, if that day arrives, you can afford to get it to work, well… Alfa Romeo 159 When an old Alfa Romeo becomes one of the more ‘sensible’ options on offer here, you know just how seriously TopGear.com has taken this brief. So become the most stylish first time driver out there in one of the most stylish four-door saloons ever crafted. Triumph Spitfire What’s this, one of the best British sportscars available under budget? Admittedly this one’s a ‘restoration’ spec project car, but the old Spitfire’s a good car to learn the ropes on. Your knuckles on the other hand, might not be so welcoming. Opel Rekord Regale all your best friends with the fact that both Opel and Vauxhall had essentially the same car on sale competing against each other at one point in the UK! Wow them with this 1980 car’s crushed red velvet interior! Show off your thrift with a ULEZ and road tax-exempt classic car they’ve never heard of! info

As expected, Primoz Roglic has signed up with Bora-Hansgrohe for the 2024 season. The almost 34-year-old Slovenian rider should be the leader of the German team in the next Tour de France. The day he announced his departure from Jumbo-Visma, Primoz Roglic explained that he would wait until the end of the Italian classics to unveil his new team. But it was finally this Friday, on the eve of the Tour of Lombardy, that the Bora-Hansgrohe team and the Slovenian rider spilled the beans. As rumors have been announcing since the start of the week, the winner of the last Giro will wear the German team's jersey next season. I'm looking forward to this step, even if a change of team is a bit like new territory for me. The good memories of our meeting years ago made the discussions easier. But the deciding factor was that the team is really motivated to work. with me, and that we share the same ideas” confided the runner, who will celebrate his 34th birthday at the end of the month.3 Roglic almost signed eight years ago The boss of the Bora-Hansgrohe team, Ralph Denk, also expressed his joy: “As a cyclist and Team Manager, patience is essential. It is not always the first attack that leads to success. Eight years ago, Primoz almost joined us as a neo-pro. Now he comes to us as a pro with a long list of victories that very few others have achieved. For us, the decisive factor was not what was achieved, but what lies ahead. Together, we want to leave our mark on the big races. Primoz appreciates the strength of our team and knows the great potential of his future teammates. I am convinced that his personality will inspire the whole team, because he is a leader with the will to win and at the same time a team player. But above all, he really loves what he does and for me, that is the key to success. » A team that looks great Without a doubt, Primoz Roglic will be the leader of the German team in the next Tour de France, the only Grand Tour missing from his record, which Jumbo-Visma could no longer guarantee him with the emergence of Jonas Vingegaard. Also with Emanuel Buchmann, Jai Hindley, Lennard Kämna, Daniel Martinez, Aleksandr Vlasov and even Cian Uijtdebroecks, the Bora-Hansgrohe team will look very good in 2024 and Primoz Roglic will be able to count on serious teammates to lead it to triumph on the Big loop. But Tadej Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel also dream of it… https://www.sports.fr/cyclisme/cest-fait-pour-roglic-765547.html

You be the judge: should my girlfriend unpack as soon as we get back from holiday? Kiran likes to live out of her suitcase at home and on holiday; Monty is a stickler for tidiness and putting things away. Either way, there’s a lot to unpack here My girlfriend and I disagree over packing and unpacking etiquette. Whenever we get back from holiday, Kiran leaves her case in our bedroom for weeks on end. I just don’t understand it. My view is that once you’ve got home, you empty your case out, put a wash on and then put the case away. Kiran will sometimes wash her dirty laundry fairly quickly, but then continue leaving the clean clothes in her case for another few weeks. I will ask her to put her stuff away and even after she relents, she will still keep the case in the corner of the room instead of putting it back in our attic, where it belongs. I find it crazy. One time, after a holiday to Greece, the case, full of clothes, lived in our bedroom for about five weeks, after which point I tipped all her stuff out and put the case away myself. That forced the issue, but I shouldn’t have to do that. When I get home from a trip, the first thing I do, after showering and sleeping, is take my clothes out and put the case away. The holiday is over. Boom. Move on. Kiran doesn’t want to accept that. Keeping all your clothes folded up and crumpled inside is just weird But also, when we are on holiday, the same principle of denial applies. Whereas I will always fold and hang my clothes up, Kiran will not. She seems to be diametrically opposed to the idea of living well and just leaves all her stuff in her case throughout the trip. Why would you not want to feel at home when you are on holiday? Keeping all your clothes folded up and crumpled inside is just weird. If Kiran has a nice dress, sometimes she will take that out, but the rest of the stuff remains in the case. It’s odd behaviour. Kiran is definitely not super conscious about tidiness in general. She leaves lids of bottles around and dirty laundry stacked up. We’ve lived together for four years and been together for seven, so I’m used to it by now, but now that she’s 35, I’d like to see some changes. Next time we go on holiday, I’d like her too unpack her stuff like a normal adult, and then when we get home, I’d like her to put her stuff away within a week. The defence: Kiran I can’t be bothered to unpack everything the second we get in the door I can’t really explain the reason why I don’t like unpacking my suitcase after a big trip. It’s just sort of embedded in my DNA. Also I just can’t be bothered to unpack everything the second we get in the door. Monty says it’s because I like to live in denial. I guess that’s true: I don’t want to accept that the holiday is over. Keeping the case in the corner of my bedroom allows me to deny the fact that we’re actually home – it keeps me in holiday mode for a little longer. I came home from work once and he had emptied my suitcase’s contents all over the floor and put the case into the attic I don’t think it really disturbs Monty all that much. He has his bag, which he puts away, and I have mine, which I store under our desk. Who cares when I take my clothes out? Once he told me I was “weird” for leaving a suitcase out for around a month after a trip to Greece. I came home from work and he had emptied its contents all over the floor and put the case into the attic. I told him that was irritating, because I was actually going to put it away myself – I just hadn’t got around to it. He said he was sick of looking at it. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/oct/06/you-be-the-judge-should-my-girlfriend-unpack-as-soon-as-we-get-back-from-holiday

Human voices cause considerably more fear in wild mammals than the sound of lions, a study in South Africa has found. Scientists played recordings of people talking normally through speakers hidden at water holes in the Kruger National Park. About 95% of animals were extremely frightened and quickly ran away. In contrast, recordings of snarling and growling lions elicited significantly less alarm. The human speech they chose to play included local languages commonly spoken in the country. Some elephants, in response to the big cat calls, even attempted to confront the source of the sound. The study's findings suggest that the animals, which included antelopes, elephants, giraffes, leopards and warthogs, have learnt that contact with humans is extremely dangerous, due to hunting, gun use and the use of dogs to catch them. The fear exhibited goes beyond the Kruger National Park, showing a global pattern where wildlife tend to fear humans more than any other predator, according to the study. The authors note that this poses a challenge for areas which rely on wildlife tourism, because the human visitors they want to attract are inadvertently scaring off the animals they have come to see. But the findings also open up the potential to protect vulnerable species in these ecosystems. Human sounds, when used appropriately, could help protect against illegal poaching. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-67023033

Narges Mohammadi received her award for fighting oppression of women and promoting human rights Imprisoned Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi has won the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize. Announcing the decision, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said Ms Mohammadi, 51, was honoured for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran. Her struggle has come at a "tremendous personal cost," committee chairwoman Berit Reiss-Andersen said. She said Ms Mohammadi was currently serving a 31-year jail term in Iran, and had been subjected to 154 lashes. Who is Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi? At Friday's ceremony in Oslo, Ms Reiss-Andersen said the prestigious award was given to Ms Mohammadi for "her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all". She began her address with the words "woman - life - freedom" - a reference to the motto of recent mass protests sweeping Iran. She went on to describe the prize as recognition of the hundreds of thousands of Iranians who have demonstrated over the past year against the "theocratic regime's policies of discrimination and oppression targeting women" - a movement headed, she said, by the new Nobel prize winner. Millions of Iranians will be cheering this award along with human rights activists around the world. The Nobel committee decision also sends a very strong signal of disapproval to the Iranian authorities. At the ceremony, Ms Reiss-Andersen also urged Iran to release Ms Mohammadi from jail so she could attend the prize ceremony in December. "If the Iranian authorities make the right decision they will release her so she can be present to receive this honour, which is what we primarily hope for." But it seems highly unlikely that the activist will actually be able to pick up her prize. The UN said the award highlighted "the courage and determination of the women of Iran and how they are an inspiration to the world". Ms Mohammadi has revealed harrowing details of how women are being abused in Tehran's Evin prison Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, a British-Iranian national who spent time in Tehran's Evin jail with Ms Mohammadi until she was released in March 2022, said she was pleased for her friend. "It makes me cry. She did so much for all of us in Evin. Narges is an inspiration and a pillar to the women in the female ward in Evin for her fearless fight against violations of women's rights, the use of solitary confinement and execution in the judicial system in Iran. "This award belongs to every single Iranian woman who, one way or another, has been and remains a victim of injustice in Iran." As well as her lengthy jail term, Ms Mohammadi has been arrested 13 times and convicted five times. Last December, she wrote from prison to give the BBC harrowing details of how Iranian women detained in demonstrations were being sexually and physically abused. She said such assaults had become more common during the protests, triggered by the death in police custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in September 2022. The unrest later spread across the country, with demands ranging from more freedoms to an overthrow of the state. Images of Iranian women defiantly setting their headscarves on fire captivated the world. The Iranian authorities have brutally cracked down on the protests and they have largely subsided. Ms Mohammadi is deputy head of the Defenders of Human Rights Center. Last year, she was included in the BBC's 100 Women - a high-profile list of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-67026216
