Sen. Tommy Tuberville won't lift his military blockade amid Israel-Hamas conflict For months, the Alabama Republican has held up more than 300 military nominees, including top officers who would command forces in the Middle East. WASHINGTON — The office of Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., said he isn’t backing down on his monthslong blockade on hundreds of military promotions, even amid Hamas’ deadly attack on Israel, a close U.S ally. “The Pentagon clearly thinks forcing taxpayers to facilitate abortion is more important than confirming their top nominees without a vote. They could end this situation TODAY by dropping their illegal and immoral policy and get everyone confirmed rapidly, but they refuse,” Tuberville spokesperson Steve Stafford said in a statement to NBC News. “If the Biden administration wants their nominees confirmed then Senate Democrats can do what Coach just did in September and file a cloture petition to force a vote.” The news was first reported by Politico. “Coach" refers to Tuberville’s past as a college football coach. Hundreds have died in the ongoing battle Hamas launched against Israel over the weekend, with Hamas fighters having also taken a number of civilians and soldiers hostage. The State Department is working to verify reports that Americans were killed and taken hostage, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Sunday on NBC News' "Meet the Press." The Biden administration has stated its support for Israel. As the conflict stretched into day two, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced Sunday that the U.S. military is moving an aircraft carrier strike group and military aircraft closer to Israel as a show of support and that it will also supply Israel with munitions and other military supplies as soon as possible. Tuberville’s blockade has put a hold on at least 300 military nominees, including top officers who would command forces in the Middle East. He said his effort is in protest of the Defense Department policy that gives time off and reimbursements for service members and their family members seeking abortions out of state. Democrats and the White House have condemned Tuberville’s use of a procedural tactic to clog up the confirmation of military officials as a threat to the military’s preparedness. He can’t actually block the Senate from processing any promotion, but his hold has dramatically slowed a process that typically proceeds without votes. Tuberville and some Republicans have argued that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., could call each of the hundreds of nominations for individual votes — a process that would take hundreds of hours of floor time for each one. The Senate last month used that tactic to confirm its first military nominees in months — Air Force Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the nation’s top military officer; Gen. Randy George as Army chief of staff; and Gen. Eric Smith as commandant of the Marine Corps. Brown’s confirmation vote came four months after President Joe Biden nominated him. Brown is set to succeed Army Gen. Mark Milley, whose term ends this month. To expedite the process and confirm the nominees en bloc would require unanimous consent from all 100 senators — something that won’t exist unless and until Tuberville lifts his hold over the Defense Department's abortion policy. Another option the Senate could use to get around Tuberville’s blockade, in theory, is to vote to change the rules and make a one-time exception. That would require two-thirds of the Senate, or 67 votes, and it's unclear whether that would happen. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/sen-tommy-tuberville-wont-lift-military-blockade-israel-hamas-conflict-rcna119401

Why would dogs eat practically everything, but cats not? There's a reason your dog would gobble up every cookie in the house while your cat turns her nose up, analyzes and weighs. The answer lies in the genes, scientists say. A blue Persian cat gazes intently at a goldfish in a fish tank in a photo from the November 1938 issue of National Geographic. Researchers have discovered that cats are genetically predisposed to foods rich in tasty umami, such as tuna. PHOTOGRAPHY BY WILLARD CULVER, NAT GEO IMAGE COLLECTION Why are cats such picky eaters while dogs seem ready to gobble up anything that comes their way? It's a question many pet owners probably ask themselves as they convince their feline friend to swallow a pill or remove another piece of napkin from their pup's mouth. Scientists still don't know a lot about animals' taste preferences. But, thanks to a small but growing number of studies, researchers are beginning to unlock some of the mysteries surrounding the culinary tastes of our four-legged friends. This is what we know so far. (Related: Are Dogs Smarter Than Cats? Science Might Have an Answer) What can cats taste? If you accidentally drop a muffin on the floor, your dog will probably devour it in one bite. Your cat, on the other hand, may turn up its nose. A possible reason for their different behaviors? Cats do not perceive sweet taste. Since they couldn't ask the cats directly, the researchers found out by analyzing their DNA. Domestic cats, tigers and cheetahs have a "broken" version of the Tas1r2 gene, which works with another gene, Tas1r3, to enable the detection of sweet taste. Although Tas1r3 appears to function perfectly in cats, Tas1r2 is an "unexpressed pseudogene" missing 247 letters. Without them, Tas1r2 does not produce a crucial protein needed to form a sweetness receptor in cats' taste buds. But if cats can't detect sweetness, what can they taste? Given cats' meat-centric diet, scientists have long suspected that they could taste umami, the rich, savory, meaty taste that the Japanese describe as the "essence of delicious." And recently, they have found evidence that confirms this hunch. After sequencing the feline genome, they discovered that cats express the two genes necessary to form umami receptors in their taste buds, Tas1r1 and Tas1r3. To take the study a step further, they gave 25 felines a choice between a bowl of normal water and another with umami flavor molecules. As expected, the cats preferred umami water and, more specifically, water containing umami compounds present in tuna. This could explain why cats like saltwater fish so much. "We think umami is the main driver of cat intake," says Scott McGrane, a scientist at the Waltham Petcare Scientific Institute, owned by Mars Petcare UK, which makes pet food and treats: "Tuna hits the spot for umami for cats." Dogs, on the other hand, can taste sweet and umami. And both cats and dogs have bitter taste receptor genes, although cats have 12 (seven of which are functional) and dogs have 15. What remains unclear, however, is how the number of genes affects bitter taste receptors to the actual perception of bitter taste by animals, says McGrane. (Related: What do cats think of us?) A terrier and a schnauzer watch a long-haired cat eat. Dogs have receptor genes that allow them to taste both umami and sweet, making them less "picky" at dinner time. PHOTOGRAPH BY BRIAN GORDON GREEN, NAT GEO IMAGE COLLECTION We are (genetically) what we eat The sense of taste helps animals evaluate possible food sources. Sweetness, for example, indicates that a food is rich in carbohydrates, which are a good source of energy. Umami indicates protein, while saltiness denotes sodium, an essential nutrient. Bitterness is a little more complicated, but scientists think it can communicate acidity, which could be useful for ingesting vitamin C or determining whether rotten fruit is actually safe to eat (since the "good" bacteria that give them sour taste would eliminate any "bad" bacteria during fermentation). The evolutionary purposes of the bitter taste are also the subject of debate, although the most widespread belief is that it may signify toxicity. The ability to detect these flavors appears in the DNA of animals: there are specific genes that produce different types of taste receptors in the taste buds of animals. Sometimes these taste receptor genes mutate randomly. If the animal survives well with the mutation, it will pass that trait on to its offspring until, over time, it becomes the norm. Scientists believe this is probably why carnivorous cats cannot taste sweet, pandas that eat bamboo cannot taste umami, and some marine mammals that swallow food whole, such as dolphins and whales, They do not have taste receptor genes. At some point in history, the taste receptor genes of some of these species stopped working properly and, due to their dietary needs, they simply stayed that way. "There is a correlation between what you eat and what is reflected in your genome," says Peihua Jiang, a researcher at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia (United States). The taste differences between dogs and cats also make sense in the context of their diets. Cats are "obligate" carnivores, meaning they can get all the nutrients they need from animal meat. Dogs, on the other hand, feed opportunistically and take advantage of any available food source, be it meat, plants or grains. "One of the reasons dogs may not be so picky is that they are very happy and can eat a wide variety of foods," says McGrane. (Related: Cats recognize their names, but it's harder for them than dogs) Your own sensory world Pets perceive the world differently than we do. Understanding these differences could provide valuable information not only to pet owners, but also to veterinarians, pharmaceutical companies, and pet food manufacturers. For example, if your cat has no appetite due to illness, you can try increasing the umami of his food, as Japanese scientist Yasuka Toda did while interning at a veterinary hospital. "To get the cats with no appetite to eat on their own, I sprinkled a small amount of dried bonito flakes (a very common umami ingredient in Japan that contains a lot of the nucleotide inosine monophosphate) on their food, and it worked very well" , Explain. Relying on research could also lead to the development of highly palatable foods and more palatable medications for dogs and cats, although scientists say more work needs to be done to fully understand our pets. "Each species lives in its own sensory world," says Jiang. "But our research is just the tip of the iceberg. There are many other things we clearly don't understand." https://www.nationalgeographic.es/video/tv/las-aguilas-son-las-mejores-aliadas-de-los-cazadores-nomadas-de-mongolia

Here are seven supercars the FL5 Honda Civic Type R beats at the Nürburgring The latest Honda hot hatch has been impressing at Speed Week 2023, but just how quick is it? Back in March this year, Honda announced that it had reclaimed the front-wheel drive lap record at the Nürburgring with a time of 7m 44.881s around the longest available 20.832km layout of the Nordschleife. That is mighty quick, and a time of 7m 39.54s on the 20.6km lap (which was used for most timing pre-2019) ensures that the little Honda – with its 324bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged four-pot – can outrun or at least hold its own against some serious machinery at the Green Hell. And yes, we’re aware of the variables involved in Nürburgring lap times and of the few tiny technological advancements that might have taken place in the past few decades, but this is still quite a ridiculous list… Yep, back in 2005 a ‘standard’ Bugatti Veyron really did set a time at the ‘Ring. Not a very good one on the 20.6km loop mind, but imagine trying to hustle that 8.0-litre quad-turbo 987bhp W16 around the Nordschleife. No thanks. https://www.topgear.com/car-news/speed-week-2023/here-are-seven-supercars-fl5-honda-civic-type-r-beats-nurburgring

Rugby: Antoine Dupont authorized to train with the Blues six days before the quarter-final Injured in the jaw, Antoine Dupont took a new step on Monday on the road to returning to the Blues. Authorized to resume contact rugby, he will participate in training with his teammates who are preparing for their quarter-final against South Africa. It remains to be seen whether he will make the squad for this crucial match. The scrum half and captain of the XV of France Antoine Dupont, operated on September 22 for a broken jaw, was authorized, Monday, October 9, to resume collective training, less than a week before the quarter-final of the World Cup against South Africa. “Following his medical examination planned today (Monday, editor’s note) with the surgeon who previously operated on him, Antoine Dupont obtained authorization to resume rugby training from today,” announced the French Rugby Federation. (FFR), without providing any clue on his participation in next Sunday's match against the reigning world champions. Antoine Dupont (26 years old, 51 caps) had an appointment in Toulouse with Professor Frédéric Lauwers, specialist in maxillofacial surgery, for a medical examination which promised to be crucial. Victim of a violent shock during the large group stage victory over Namibia (96-0) in Marseille on September 21, the captain of the Blues was operated on the next day at the Purpan hospital in Toulouse, before returning Barely 10 days later its partners, for a “progressive” individual recovery phase. https://www.france24.com/fr/sports/20231009-rugby-antoine-dupont-autorisé-à-s-entraîner-avec-les-bleus-à-six-jours-du-quart-de-finale

When I got the tools, I did cry’ … Lynn Leggat in her workshop. Photograph: Christopher Thomond/The Guardian A new start after 60 Life and style A new start after 60: A set of carpentry tools deepened my bond with my late father As a child, Lynn Leggat felt closest to her dad when he taught her woodworking. Just after he died, she was given power tools for her birthday and began making up for lost time ynn Leggat has always “kept wood stacked around the place,” she says. She picked it up here and there for a notional future when she would make something with it. For her 60th birthday, her husband Alan, a builder, bought her a set of power tools. “He said: ‘You keep talking about it, now go and do it.’” Woodworking has always felt important to Leggat, now 62. She was born in Manchester, and when she was five, in 1966, the family emigrated to Wellington, New Zealand. Her father was a carpenter who made wooden patterns for ship parts, and Leggat learned at his side. “He taught me to knock a nail in when I was seven or eight, and how to hold a saw. He thought it was important for girls to have the skills that boys have.” Her father “made tables, cupboards, kitchens. Whatever was needed in the house, he made it – a conservatory, an orangery, a games room. He just kept building things. I think doing the practical stuff with me was his way of showing me how much he cared. I knew he loved me,” Leggat says. By the time she was 15, Leggat’s father had gone out of business. She left school shortly after. “You only really went to sixth form if you were going to college or university. My mum and dad couldn’t afford a uniform,” she says. To find work, she opened the Yellow Pages and turned to “banks”. The first one she called invited her to interview. “I worked in a bank, a finance company, and for EMI … I was never really happy with what I was doing, so every 18 months I’d change my job,” she says. She was also “a restaurant manager and a waitress, did bar work, marketing, and demonstrations in supermarkets”. At 22, she returned to England to connect with her wider family. One night, her uncle persuaded her to accompany him to a Catholic dance. She bumped into Alan (quite literally) on the dancefloor. He walked her home. They have been together for 38 years, and have three children. Leggat restarted her education when she was about 30, sitting A-levels in a hall full of teenagers, and later doing an Open University degree. At 40, she started working for Manchester city council in regeneration and youth services, and for the past 10 years has specialised in charity work, teaching women DIY at a local community centre. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/oct/09/a-new-start-after-60-a-set-of-carpentry-tools-deepened-my-bond-with-my-late-father

At least 30 people have been killed in landslides caused by heavy rains in Cameroon's capital Yaoundé, the emergency services have said. A local radio station put the death toll at 40, saying that many people are still missing. Rescue efforts were hampered by floods, forcing locals to pull bodies out of the debris with their bare hands. Heavy rainfall caused the Mefou River to burst its banks on Sunday, submerging several neighbourhoods. The disaster comes almost a year after at least 14 people died in another landslide in the city. The poor neighbourhood of Mbankolo was worst affected in the latest disaster, with some homes, built on slopes, collapsing and banana trees being uprooted. Housing and Urban Development Minister Celestine Ketcha Courtès told the BBC a team would "work all day long to continue finding people". The bodies of children were "spread out on the wet ground", a resident was quoted as saying by the Cameroon Voice news website. In total, 12 bodies have been identified and taken to the morgue, the private Actu Cameroun website reports. About 25 houses were swept away by the raging floods and "many families are certainly still trapped alive", it added. On Saturday, authorities in neighbouring Nigeria warned residents to expect floods in nine states as Cameroon began releasing water from its Lagdo Dam. It is expected to do this until the end of this month, Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency (Nema) said, adding that Cameroon's dam was expected to spill water until the end of October. Cameroon says the release of water is necessary due to heavy rains in the country's north. The release would be kept to a minimum, officials added. Last year, the release of water from the dam caused flooding and fatalities in Nigeria, especially in Benue state, on the border with Cameroon. Things to try first Try these things first to help you fix or narrow down the connection problem. Make sure Wi‑Fi is turned on. Select the "No internet connection" icon on the right side of the taskbar, and make sure Wi-Fi is turned on. If it isn't, select it to turn it on. Also, make sure Airplane mode is turned off. Afterwards, see if a Wi-Fi network you recognize and trust appears in the list of networks. If it does, select the Wi-Fi network, and they try to connect to it. If it says Connected underneath the network name, select Disconnect, wait a moment, and then select Connect again. Try connecting to a network on a different frequency band. Many consumer Wi-Fi routers broadcast at two different network frequency bands: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. These will appear as separate networks in the list of available Wi-Fi networks. If your list of available Wi-Fi networks includes both a 2.4 GHz network and a 5 GHz network, try connecting to the other network. To learn more about the differences between 2.4 GHz networks and 5 GHz networks, check out Wi-Fi problems and your home layout. Make sure the physical Wi‑Fi switch on your laptop is turned on. (An indicator light usually shows when it's on.) Run the Network troubleshooter. The Network troubleshooter can help diagnose and fix common connection problems. To run the Network troubleshooter Select the Start button > Settings > Network & Internet > Status. Open Network & Internet Status settings Under Change your network settings, select Network troubleshooter. Follow the steps in the troubleshooter, and see if that fixes the problem. Restart your modem and wireless router. This helps create a new connection to your internet service provider (ISP). When you do this, everyone that is connected to your Wi-Fi network will be temporarily disconnected. The steps you take to restart your modem and router can vary, but here are the general steps. (Note: If you have a cable modem/Wi-Fi router combo device, you only need to follow the steps for the single device.) Unplug the power cable for the router from the power source. Unplug the power cable for the modem from the power source. Some modems have a backup battery. If you unplug the modem and lights stay on, remove the battery from the modem. Wait at least 30 seconds or so. If you had to remove the battery from the modem, put it back in. Plug the modem back into the power source. The lights on the modem will blink. Wait for them to stop blinking. Plug your router back into the power source. Wait a few minutes for the modem and router to fully power on. You can usually tell when they’re ready by looking at the status lights on the two devices. On your PC, try to connect again. Narrow down the source of the problem Connection problems can be due to a variety of reasons—problems with the website, your device, the Wi-Fi router, modem, or your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Try the following steps to help narrow down the source of the problem. If the "Wi-Fi connected" icon appears on the right side of the taskbar, visit a different website. If the website opens, there might be a problem with the specific website. If you can't connect to another website, go to the next step. On another laptop or phone, try to connect to the same network. If you can connect, the source of the problem is likely due to your device—go to the section Network troubleshooting on your device. If you can't connect to the network on any device, continue to the next step. Check to see if there is a problem with the connection to your Wi-Fi router. Do this by using a ping test. In the search box on the taskbar, type command prompt. The Command Prompt button will appear. To the right of it, select Run as administrator > Yes. At the command prompt, type ipconfig, and then select Enter. Look for the name of your Wi-Fi network within the results, and then find the IP address listed next to Default gateway for that Wi-Fi network. Write down that address if you need to. For example: 192.168.1.1 At the prompt, type ping <DefaultGateway> and then select Enter. For example, type ping 192.168.1.1 and select Enter. The results should be something like this: Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=5ms TTL=64 Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=5ms TTL=64 Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=5ms TTL=64 Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=5ms TTL=64 Ping statistics for 192.168.1.1: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 4ms, Maximum = 5ms, Average = 4ms If you see results like this and are getting a reply, then you have a connection to your Wi-Fi router, so there might be a problem with your modem or ISP. Contact your ISP or check online on another device (if you can) to see if there's a service outage. If the results of the ping test indicate that you are not getting a reply from the router, try connecting your PC directly to your modem by using an Ethernet cable (if you can). If you can connect to the internet using an Ethernet cable, it confirms the connection problem is due to the Wi-Fi router. Make sure you've installed the latest firmware and see the documentation for your router. Network troubleshooting on your device Run network commands Try running these network commands to manually reset the TCP/IP stack, release and renew the IP address, and flush and reset the DNS client resolver cache: In the search box on the taskbar, type command prompt. The Command Prompt button will appear. To the right of it, select Run as administrator > Yes. At the command prompt, run the following commands in the listed order, and then check to see if that fixes your connection problem: Type netsh winsock reset and selectEnter. Type netsh int ip reset and select Enter. Type ipconfig /release and select Enter. Type ipconfig /renew and select Enter. Type ipconfig /flushdns and select Enter. Uninstall the network adapter driver and restart If the previous steps didn’t work, try to uninstall the network adapter driver, and then restart your computer. Windows will automatically install the latest driver. Consider this approach if your network connection stopped working properly after a recent update. Before uninstalling, make sure you have drivers available as a backup. Visit the PC manufacturer’s website and download the latest network adapter driver from there. If your PC can't connect to the internet, you'll need to download a driver on a different PC and save it to a USB flash drive so you can install the driver on your PC. You’ll need to know the PC manufacturer and model name or number. In the search box on the taskbar, type device manager, and then select Device Manager from the list of results. Expand Network adapters, and locate the network adapter for your device. Select the network adapter, press and hold (or right-click), and then select Uninstall device > check the Attempt to remove the driver software for this device check box > Uninstall. After uninstalling the driver, select the Start button > Power > Restart. After your PC restarts, Windows will automatically look for and install the network adapter driver. Check to see if that fixes your connection problem. If Windows doesn't automatically install a driver, try to install the backup driver you saved before uninstalling. Check if your network adapter is compatible with the latest Windows Update If you lost your network connection immediately after upgrading or updating Windows 10, it's possible that the current driver for your network adapter was designed for a previous version of Windows. To check, try temporarily uninstalling the recent Windows Update: Select the Start button, then select Settings > Update & Security >Windows Update > View update history >Uninstall updates. Select the most recent update, then select Uninstall. If uninstalling the most recent update restores your network connection, check to see if an updated driver is available: In the search box on the taskbar, type device manager, and then select Device Manager from the list of results. Expand Network adapters, and locate the network adapter for your device. Select the network adapter, select Update driver >Search automatically for updated driver software, and then follow the instructions. After installing the updated driver, select the Start button > Power > Restart if you're asked to restart, and see if that fixes the connection issue. If Windows can’t find a new driver for your network adapter, visit the PC manufacturer’s website and download the latest network adapter driver from there. You’ll need to know the PC manufacturer and model name or number. Do one of the following: If you couldn’t download and install a newer network adapter driver, hide the update that’s causing you to lose your network connection. To learn how to hide updates, see Hide Windows Updates or driver updates. If you could successfully install updated drivers for your network adapter, then reinstall the latest updates. To do this, select the Start button, then select Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates. Use network reset Using network reset should be the last step you try. Consider using it if the steps above don’t help to get you connected. This can help solve connection problems you might have after upgrading from a previous version of Windows to Windows 10. It can also help to fix the problem where you can connect to the internet, but can't connect to shared network drives. Network reset removes any network adapters you have installed and the settings for them. After your PC restarts, any network adapters are reinstalled, and the settings for them are set to the defaults. Select the Start button, then select Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network reset. Open Network & Internet Status settings On the Network reset screen, select Reset now > Yes to confirm. Wait for your PC to restart, and see if that fixes the problem. Additional troubleshooting steps Check your Wi-Fi settings Wi-Fi adapter manufacturers might have different advanced settings you can change based on your network environment or connection preferences. Check the Wireless Mode setting for your network adapter and make sure it matches the capabilities of the network you’re trying to connect to. If it doesn’t match, you won’t be able to connect, and the network might not appear in the list of available networks. The Wireless Mode will often be set to Auto or something similar by default, which enables connection for every kind of network that’s supported. To find the wireless mode setting In Device Manager, select Network adapters, and then double-click the network adapter name. Select the Advanced tab and look for a Wireless Mode setting. Make sure it’s set to the mode your network is using. Wi-Fi profile settings Windows uses the Wi-Fi profile to save the settings that are needed to connect to a Wi-Fi network. These settings include the network security type, key, network name (SSID), and so on. If you can’t connect to a Wi-Fi network that you could connect to before, it’s possible that the network settings might have changed or the profile is corrupted. To fix this, remove (or "forget") the network connection, then reconnect to the network. When you forget a network connection, it removes the Wi-Fi network profile from your PC. To forget a network Select the Wi-Fi network icon on the right side of the taskbar, then select Network & Internet settings. Select Wi-Fi , then select Manage known networks. Select the network you want to forget, then select Forget. Afterwards, select the Wi-Fi icon on the taskbar and try to reconnect to the desired network to renew the network connection. Check your home layout Your Wi-Fi network might be affected by the network's frequency band, channel congestion, and/or signal strength. For more info, see Wi-Fi problems and your home layout. Check for additional symptoms for the "No internet connection" icon There may be additional troubleshooting steps you can try, depending on which symptoms you're having. To view these steps, check out Wi-Fi connection icons and what they mean.

How to Benchmark a Raspberry Pi Using Vcgencmd Get all the data from your favorite single board computer The vcgencmd has been buried deep in Raspberry Pi OS for many years, but it took the Raspberry Pi 5 for us to truly learn to love it. At its most basic level, the command is used to output information from the VideoCore GPU, which forms part of the SoC. But with a few extra options / arguments we can get live CPU temperature data, voltages, clock speeds for many different components and much more. In this how to we will introduce the basic usage of the command and then write a custom Bash script which will benchmark any Raspberry Pi system The command has multiple options to measure clock speeds, temperatures, voltages etc. Let's go through them and see how each command is used, and an example of its output. Every computer has more than one clock speed. The CPU may be running in the Gigahertz, but some parts of your computer will be running at much lower speeds. The vcgencmd command has options to monitor https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/raspberry-pi-benchmark-vcgencmd

A man holds up a tablet showing a digitally overlayed virtual reconstruction of the ancient Parthenon temple, at the Acropolis Hill in Athens, Greece on Tuesday, June 13, 2023. Greece has become a late but enthusiastic convert to new technology as a way of displaying its famous archaeological monuments and deepening visitors' knowledge of ancient history. The latest virtual tour on offer is provided by a mobile app that uses Augmented Reality to produce digital overlays that show visitors at the Acropolis how the site and its sculptures looked 2,500 ago. Credit: AP Photo/Petros Giannakouris Tourists at the Acropolis this holiday season can witness the resolution of one of the world's most heated debates on cultural heritage. All they need is a smartphone. Visitors can now pinch and zoom their way around the ancient Greek site, with a digital overlay showing how it once looked. That includes a collection of marble sculptures removed from the Parthenon more than 200 years ago that are now on display at the British Museum in London. Greece has demanded they be returned. For now, an app supported by Greece's Culture Ministry allows visitors to point their phones at the Parthenon temple, and the sculptures housed in London appear back on the monument as archaeologists believe they looked 2,500 years ago. Other, less widely known features also appear: Many of the sculptures on the Acropolis were painted in striking colors. A statue of goddess Athena in the main chamber of the Parthenon also stood over a shallow pool of water. "That's really impressive ... the only time I've seen that kind of technology before is at the dentist," Shriya Parsotam Chitnavis, a tourist from London, said after checking out the app on a hot afternoon at the hilltop Acropolis, Greece's most po[CENSORED]r archaeological site. "I didn't know much about the (Acropolis), and I had to be convinced to come up here. Seeing this has made it more interesting—seeing it in color," she said. "I'm more of a visual person, so this being interactive really helped me appreciate it." The virtual restoration works anywhere and could spare some visitors the crowded uphill walk and long wait to see the iconic monuments up close. It might also help the country's campaign to make Greek cities year-round destinations. Tourism, vital for the Greek economy, has roared back since the COVID-19 pandemic, even as wildfires chased visitors from the island of Rhodes and affected other areas this summer. The number of inbound visitors from January through July was up 21.9% to 16.2 million compared with a year ago, according to the Bank of Greece. Revenue was up just over 20%, to 10.3 billion euros ($10.8 billion). The app, called "Chronos" after the mythological king of the Titans and Greek word for "time," uses augmented reality to place the ancient impression of the site onto the screen, matching the real-world view as you walk around. AR is reaching consumers after a long wait and is set to affect a huge range of professional and leisure activities. Medical surgery, military training and specialized machine repair as well as retail and live event experiences are all in the sights of big tech companies betting on a lucrative future in immersive services. Tech giant like Meta and Apple are pushing into VR headsets that can cost thousands of dollars. The high price tag will keep the cellphone as the main AR delivery platform to consumers for some time, said Maria Engberg, co-author of the book "Reality Media" on augmented and virtual reality. She says services for travelers will soon offer a better integrated experience, allowing for more sharing options on tours and overlaying archive photos and videos. "AR and VR have been lagging behind other kinds of things like games and movies that we're consuming digitally," said Engberg, an associate professor of computer science and media technology at Malmo University in Sweden. "I think we will see really interesting customer experiences in the next few years as more content from museums and archives becomes digitized," she said. Greece's Culture Ministry and national tourism authority are late but enthusiastic converts to technology. The po[CENSORED]r video game Assassin's Creed Odyssey, which allows players to roam ancient Athens, was used to attract young travelers from China to Greece with a state-organized photo contest. Microsoft partnered with the Culture Ministry two years ago to launch an immersive digital tour at ancient Olympia, birthplace of the Olympic Games in southern Greece. Culture Minister Lina Mendoni said the innovations would boost accessibility to Greece's ancient monuments, supplementing the recent installation of ramps and anti-slip pathways. "Accessibility is extending to the digital space," Mendoni said at a preview launch event for the Chronos app in May. "Real visitors and virtual visitors anywhere around the world can share historical knowledge." Developed by Greek telecoms provider Cosmote, the free app's designers say they hope to build on existing features that include an artificial intelligence-powered virtual guide, Clio. "As technologies and networks advance, with better bandwidth and lower latencies, mobile devices will be able to download even higher-quality content," said Panayiotis Gabrielides, a senior official at the telecom company involved in the project. Virtual reconstructions using Chronos also cover three other monuments at the Acropolis, an adjacent Roman theater and parts of the Acropolis Museum built at the foot of the rock. https://techxplore.com/news/2023-10-app-ancient-greek-sites-thousands.html

War in Israel tests Biden's foreign policy case for 2024 Republican candidates hoping to unseat President Joe Biden quickly blamed him for the crisis. WASHINGTON — Presidential races don’t normally hinge on crises in distant nations, but the armed conflict that broke out in Israel threatens to undercut Joe Biden’s argument that his foreign policy expertise is making the world more secure. The attacks launched by Hamas fighters expose deficiencies in Israeli intelligence, experts said, while raising fresh questions about what the U.S. is getting in return for the time spent building surveillance capabilities and partnerships in the volatile Middle East. “This is an enormous intelligence failure by the Israelis and the Americans,” said Bruce Riedel, a former CIA officer and Middle East specialist. “I don’t see any reason to believe that either Washington or Jerusalem had any expectation this was coming.” Follow live updates on Israel here. As a sitting president who pledged to restore competence in the foreign policy arena, Biden now faces accusations from political opponents that global trouble spots are multiplying on his watch. Polls show that Americans are turning against the Biden administration’s arms deliveries to Ukraine in its grinding war with Russia. A U.S. Air Force general predicted in a memo in January that the U.S. and China could be at war by 2025. And a Biden administration initiative to normalize relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia is in danger of unraveling. If Israel’s war with Hamas results in the deaths of Palestinian civilians in Gaza, the Saudis may sour on the idea of improving ties to the Jewish state. “The [Biden] administration has spent an enormous amount of effort to work on an Israeli-Saudi normalization agreement,” Riedel said. “That’s probably dead in the water now. Once there are pictures of hundreds of Palestinian casualties — including women and children — the Saudi po[CENSORED]tion is not going to be willing to accept a normalization agreement.” Republican presidential candidates were quick to fault Biden after Hamas launched its attack. GOP frontrunner Donald Trump’s campaign put out a statement focusing on the $6 billion in Iranian oil revenues that the U.S. had frozen through sanctions. Iran has historically funded Hamas, with whom Israel is now at war. In exchange for releasing the money, Iran agreed to let five imprisoned Americans return home. “One month ago, President Trump warned that Joe Biden’s weakness and $6 billion payout to Iran would ‘be used for terrorism all over the Middle East,’” the Trump campaign statement said. “That’s exactly what is happening now.” There is no evidence that the $6 billion helped finance the attacks. The money can be used only for medicine, food and humanitarian purposes under the conditions placed on its release, U.S. officials said. Yet in an interview with NBC News, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said his government would decide how it would spend the $6 billion. “These funds have absolutely nothing to do with the horrific attacks today and this is not the time to spread disinformation,” Adrienne Watson, a spokeswoman for the White House’s National Security Council, said in a social media post. Biden’s approach to Iran figures to get more attention as the hostilities with Hamas unfold. He has faced demands from Arab countries and Israel to toughen his posture toward Iran as he tries to revive a nuclear deal reached when he was Barack Obama’s vice president. In 2018, Trump pulled out of the deal, which was meant to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons. In a video released Saturday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, another presidential candidate, said that Biden’s policies “have gone easy on Iran and helped fill their coffers.” “We are going to stand with Israel as they root out Hamas and we need to stand up to Iran,” DeSantis said. Facing one of the most perilous foreign policy crises of his term, Biden spoke directly to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Saturday morning. Later in the day, he gave a brief television address from the White House, saying that America’s support for Israel is ironclad while warning Israel’s enemies not to “exploit these attacks.” https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/white-house/war-israel-tests-bidens-foreign-policy-case-2024-rcna119349

Frodo's epic journey through the world: a humpback whale that crossed half the planet An unprecedented ocean voyage from the Mariana Islands to Mexico shows that whale migration patterns are more complex than we thought. A battle-scarred male humpback whale named Frodo just completed the longest known journey for his species, a new study claims. Between 2017 and 2018, the animal swam about 11,000 kilometers from Saipan in the Mariana Islands to Sayulita, Mexico, according to a new study published in Endangered Species Research. The previous record was held by a female humpback who swam just over 10,000 km from Brazil to Madagascar in 2001. When biologist Nico Ransome delved into the male's astonishing trans-Pacific journey, she discovered that he had also appeared near Russia's Commander Islands in 2010 and 2013, and that Russian scientists had named him Frodo after the Lord of the Rings character. who embarks on an epic quest. Frodo has not only broken the distance record, but has also turned the narrative on its head about what we thought were typical humpback migration patterns, says study leader Ransome, a biologist at Murdoch University in Perth. (Australia) and founder of La Orca de Sayulita, a whale watching and research company. The vast majority of the estimated 7,500 humpback whales that breed in western Mexico migrate north to Alaska and Canada to feed during the summers. Frodo, on the other hand, circumnavigated the entire North Pacific and, as Ransome would discover, he is not alone. "I've been obsessed with whale migration for years," Ransome says. "To find out that some of them are going to Russia... it's mind-blowing." (Related: Humpback whales face major setback from climate change) A regular route A few years ago, Ransome began noticing the presence of Russian whales in Mexico. Ransome identifies the animals through an online database called Happywhale, which keeps track of 30,000 humpback whales with black and white fin patterns as unique as a human's fingerprint. "It's like Facebook for whales," says study co-author Ted Cheeseman, a biologist at Southern Cross University in Lismore, Australia, who co-founded Happywhale in 2015. Hundreds of scientists and dozens of whale-watching companies use the Facebook database. data, which has a 97 to 99 percent accuracy rate for identifying humpbacks, Cheeseman says. Study co-author Marie Hill, a biologist at the Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research, shared the photo she took of Frodo in the Marianas in 2017 on Happywhale. She says such "open collaboration is key to understanding how breeding and feeding grounds are doing." connected, which is critical for the protection and conservation of humpback whales." Frodo's novel voyages prompted Ransome, Hill, Cheeseman and their colleagues to delve into Happywhale's archives to see if other humpbacks made transpacific migrations. They found 117 specimens that migrated from Mexico to feeding areas in Russia between 1998 and 2021. Before this research, only 11 whales had been sighted in both Russia and Mexico. People have sighted more than a third of these Russian whales in multiple years in Mexico's breeding areas. Since 2021, Ransome has documented several more Russian whales in Mexico, including mothers with calves, meaning Frodo's seemingly strange migration is probably a regular route. (Related: Humpback whale po[CENSORED]tions recover in southern Africa) Why go so far? The whales may be making these long journeys to find mates, possibly as "a relic of the whaling industry," Ransome says. In the 1960s, the number of these 18-meter-long marine mammals, hunted for their oil, meat and baleen, dropped to an estimated low of 1,200 animals throughout the North Pacific, a heavily whaling region. The po[CENSORED]tion of the western North Pacific remains in danger, according to the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and studies carried out by Hill in the Marianas between 2015 and 2018 determined that these islands are , in effect, a lost breeding area for humpback whales. https://www.nationalgeographic.es/animales/2023/09/viaje-medio-mundo-frodo-ballena-jorobada

Finding the best performance car of 2023: Top Gear's Speed Week is here Everything you need to know about Top Gear magazine's annual festival of fast… including how we went green(er) in 2023 Speed Week is Top Gear magazine's annual performance car of the year test. A gathering of the greatest fast cars launched within the last 12 months, brought together in one place (this year it’s the Gotlandring track in Sweden, but it could be anywhere in the world) for a week of road and track testing, photography and video production and very little sleep. The goal is to separate the great from the merely good and, eventually, pick an overall winner. Whereas other publications might be laser focused on lap times and performance figures, our judging process is more… organic. We’re looking for all-round ability of course, hence the road and track elements, but the criteria is simple – the winner is the one that brings us the most joy, which is what allows a £300k supercar to compete on a level playing field with a £30k hot hatch. This year we posed ourselves an additional question: “Could we make Speed Week a low-carbon event, without compromising on the, y’know, speed?” What followed was a crash course - from a team within the BBC that knows about these things - in sustainability, or more specifically how to avoid the many and varied pitfalls of claiming to be green, when you're anything but. You see, finding high-quality carbon offsets can be a bit of a minefield and simply getting the event rubber stamped by a third party isn’t the way to go. Far better to scrutinise our own plans, to take a long hard look at the event and make efforts to reduce our carbon footprint wherever possible, within the real-world constraints of time, budget and technology. https://www.topgear.com/car-news/speed-week-2023/finding-best-performance-car-2023-top-gears-speed-week-here
