  9. he Geneva Motor Show is one of our favourite events of the year, not to mention the largest of its kind in Europe. It’s a place for the world’s car manufacturers to meet on neutral ground and show off their latest models, both production and concept, to the assembled public and press. It’s not the only motor show in the world, but it’s arguably the most influential, and on the ‘media preview day’ next Tuesday, March 5th, there’s bound to be big news. Here’s what we can reasonably anticipate at the show in terms of new and prototype models. Alfa Romeo Alfa Romeo’s return to Formula 1 will take centre stage on its Geneva stand this year, though fans of the Italian brand’s road cars will not be disappointed. A revamped Giulietta hatchback will make its debut in Veloce and Executive trim, the former being powered (rather oddly, all things considered) by a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine. It looks great, but the Giulietta is pretty average in comparison to more mainstream players in the C-segment space The Stelvio will be in Geneva in ‘Turizmo Internazionale’ specification, too. The Ti badge has been fastened to a 276bhp version of the brand’s first SUV, which will be capable of 143mph and which will reach 62mph in just 5.7 seconds. It’s nowhere near as quick as the Stelvio Quadrifoglio, a sub-4.0 super-SUV, but does offer something a little bit dynamic for buyers who find the vanilla Stelvio just a little bit sluggish. Aston Martin The Lagonda brand will be resuscitated in 2021. There are no prizes for guessing what form its first model will take – hybrid SUVs are flavour du jour, and even Aston Martin is keen to cash in on the crossover craze – but expect some excitement when the design is revealed on Tuesday. This won’t be a mass-market production model like the DBX, and only 500 will be built, so the ‘Project 003’ will likely sit alongside the Valkyrie in terms of scarcity. Audi We’re as bored as you are with electric SUVs, so we’ll forgive you if you skip this one. Audi’s Q4 E-Tron is a fully electric soft-roader with a fully-ridiculous radiator grille. It’ll have a motor on each axle, and while we don’t have performance figures yet, we expect it’ll be pretty quick off the mark. All we’ve seen are stylised sketches, so the Q4 should draw some attention in the metal next week, but whether it proves as po[CENSORED]r when it goes on sale in 2021 remains to be seen. At the other end of the interestingness spectrum is the TT RS, which goes on sale in April. Its characterful five-cylinder 2.5-litre engine produces just shy of 400bhp and drives all four wheels, a setup capable of launching the coupé – once derided as a bit fashionable, the TT has spent the past two decades evolving into a very serious car. “The new TT RS is in absolute peak form,” says Michael-Julius Renz, CEO of Audi Sport GmbH. “Like a well-trained athlete, it showcases even more prominently how much power lies beneath its muscular outer skin.” Right. Well, aside from that, Audi will also be bringing the new A6 Allroad, a sophisticated estate car with off-road pretentions. Rural readers, especially those with dogs, take note. Bentley Bentley turns 100 years old this year, and to celebrate the occasion will bring a special edition, Blower-inspired Continental GT to Geneva. We don’t know much about it beyond what the teaser images show us, but we’re hoping to see a big white number on the radiator grille like a 1920s racer.
  10. aking over a derelict pub is a challenge for anyone, let alone a complete beginner. “I was staggered at how heavy a cask of beer is,” says Matt Todd of his first day in charge of the Wonston Arms. “I picked up a nine-gallon and went: ‘Blimey!’ I picked up an 11-gallon and went: ‘Crikey!’” That was four years ago, and at that point the idea of the Wonston Arms being named the best pub in the country was as realistic as the village football team winning the Premier League. The pub had been getting shabbier and emptier by the year, and was destined for redevelopment into housing when Todd, then working for Nokia in sales and marketing, had an idea. He would quit his job, he decided, and spend his...

  12. February 14 | Spike Chunsoft | Link | Fighting There’s more than a handful of people who wish they could beat up Naruto, and the only way to sweeten that deal is if you do it while playing as Frieza. Determine your supreme anime canon by tossing characters like Goku, One Piece’s Monkey D. Luffy and Zoro, Bleach’s Ichigo, and more into Times Square for proper fistfighting. You’ll make a group of three and ape some moves from Dragon Ball FighterZ, with each button linking itself to an auto-combo.
  13. They took us to Arizona for the launch of McLaren’s 720S Spider. This desert playground usually has decent weather in February – with the best part of 720bhp going to the rear wheels, Britain’s frozen, salted roads would have been no place for any sort of McLaren, let alone one with a convertible roof. With an oxymoronic reputation as the sensible supercar, McLaren’s series of ever-faster mid-engined two seaters has done well for the Woking-based manufacturer, although critics point out that the cars look too similar and share too much of their drivetrains. There’s some truth in that, but McLaren has carefully managed its meagre disparities, enough to keep buyers interested and coming back....

  14. o you’ve got the coveted four day a week senior role, a devoted nanny and the grandparents practically on the doorstep. Oh and you’ve just thrown every last penny into buying your dream house that might just be in the catchment for the excellent local secondary when your two children, (five and eight), require. Congratulations, you’re living the middle-class, middle-aged dream. Time to sit back and enjoy it, right? Or, if you’re my husband and I last April, you chuck it all in and move abroad. To continental Europe, in fact, with absolutely no guarantee about what Brexit will mean for you and the 784,900 other British expats.

  15. British climber whose mother died on K2 has gone missing while ascending a peak in Pakistan known as “Killer Mountain”. Tom Ballard had been tackling the perilous Nanga Parbat with an Italian climbing partner, Daniele Nardi, but the pair have not been heard from since Sunday. The 30-year-old is a distinguished climber and in 2015 became the first person to ever complete a solo climb of all six major north faces of the Alps in one winter. His mother, Alison Hargreaves, was the first woman to reach the top of Everest unaided. She died in 1995 during a descent from the peak of K2 in the Himalayas. On Sunday, Mr Nardi’s ground team reported that the pair had ascended to around 6,300 metres on the 8,100-metre mountain, which is the ninth highest in the world. However, they added: “The weather is not good, there was fog, sleet and wind gusts.” It was the last communication the support team were to receive from the two men, who had maintained contact through satellite phone and radio. Initially the lack of communication was put down to weak signal coverage in cloudy conditions, but no trace of the pair could be seen when the weather cleared. Mr Nardi’s team wrote yesterday that “the alert has been growing” since Tuesday morning and a rescue operation was now under way. Ali Sadpara, a Pakistani mountaineer who conquered the peak two years ago, has been drafted in to potentially assist the search, they said. Plans to use a helicopter to sweep the mountain face was initially scuppered by the sudden escalation of tensions between Pakistan and India this week, which caused airspace to close.

  18. hat is it? An SUV, clearly, but doesn’t Lexus, Toyota’s luxury division, already produce SUVs? Well yes, and its existing SUV range consisting of the RX and NX rather skirt the main event, which is the family-sized SUV market, where BMW’s X1, Audi’s Q3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLA are hoovering up young families’ PCP lease contributions. Even parent company Toyota produces such an SUV, the bizarre but strangely nice CH-R - and it’s that car which provides the base for this new hybrid-based two- and four-wheel-drive SUV that is the Lexus UX.
  19. esearchers at Ohio State University told us this week that diners are more likely to believe the food they’re eating is healthy if they have selected it from a menu that features a “hand-written” font with “imperfect curves, slants and organic strokes”. "It feels to the customer like there is more heart, more effort and more love in it,” says Prof Stephanie Liu, co-author of a recent report in the Journal of Business Research, “even though it doesn't cost any more money." This is not the moment to ask whether budget cuts have forced Ohio State (Go, Buckeyes!) to merge its Hospitality Marketing department with its Faculty of the Bleeding Obvious.
  20. isgraced MP Fiona Onasanya has been released from prison after serving a third of her sentence for perverting the course of justice. The MP for Peterborough, who was expelled by the Labour Party, was driven out of HMP Bronzefield in Ashford, Surrey, on Tuesday morning - four weeks after she was jailed. She was sentenced to three months at the Old Bailey on January 29 after being convicted of perverting the course of justice by lying to avoid a speeding charge. Onasanya sat in the back of a white Vauxhall with the closest window to her covered by a hi-vis jacket as it drove past photographers at speed. She has refused to stand down and trigger a by-election in her seat and having been freed under an early-release scheme, the politician - now sitting as an independent - could appear in the Commons for tomorrow's crucial Brexit voting. The Daily Mail reported that she would be made to wear an ankle tag as part of the programme. The 35-year-old solicitor was jailed on January 29 after she was convicted at the Old Bailey. News of her release comes a day after a complaint to the Attorney General's Office that the sentence given to her was unduly lenient was rejected. The Attorney General's Office said on Monday: "After careful consideration, the Solicitor General has concluded that he could not refer this case to the Court of Appeal. "A referral under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme to the Court of Appeal can only be made if a sentence is not just lenient but unduly so, such that the sentencing judge made a gross error or imposed a sentence outside the range of sentences reasonably available in the circumstances of the offence. "The threshold is a high one and the test was not met in this case." Under parliamentary rules only MPs jailed for 12 months or more are automatically kicked out of the Commons. Onasanya's refusal to quit her seat has drawn criticism both from Labour and the Tories. Jurors at the Old Bailey heard that Onasanya colluded with her brother Festus after her car was clocked doing 41mph in a 30mph zone in the village of Thorney, near Peterborough, in July 2017. The court was told that she was sent a Notice of Intended Prosecution to fill out, but it was sent back naming the guilty driver as Aleks Antipow, an acquaintance of her brother, who was away visiting his parents in Russia. Her brother received 10 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to three counts of perverting the course of justice over speeding, including over the July 24 incident. Onasanya is appealing against her conviction.
