  2. I’m halfway through a gruelling four-mile rally when a tyre suddenly pops. I can hear the loose rubber clinging on for dear life until it eventually bursts and disintegrates, revealing a bare metal wheel scraping along the gravel and leaving a trail of sparks. I could restart, but I decide to push on because I’m three long rallies into a six-stage championship. The car is flailing wildly and I have to fight with it to keep it on the track, but I somehow manage to limp over the finish line and place a respectable third. This is Dirt 4 at its best. Those moments when you’re flying by the seat of your pants, wrestling with your car as it careens through the mud, surviving long enough to cross the finish line. Rallies are intense, nerve-racking tests of endurance and driving skill. And when something goes wrong, like a knackered wheel or your headlights blinking out after one too many bumps in a night race, things get even more stressful. Especially when you consider that some damage will carry over into the next stage. When you start Dirt 4 you’re given a choice of two controls: Gamer and Simulation. Gamer labels itself as being for those who want to “have fun”, but don’t be tempted to choose it. When it’s enabled the game is laughably easy, and you’ll soon grow tired of coming first in every event and rarely veering off the track. The traction control and other assists are ramped up to an absurd degree, and while it’s cool that it’s there for inexperienced players, you’ll get a lot more out of the game if you choose Simulation. Simulation isn’t quite on the same level as superb hardcore spin-off Dirt Rally, but it’s a lot less forgiving than Gamer. You really feel the weight of the car as you speed around a corner, and it’s easy to spin out if you’re too aggressive with the throttle. Even so, it’s noticeably more accessible and immediately playable than Dirt Rally, with nowhere near as much nuance to the controls and physics. You can get away with a lot more here, and the learning curve is more gradual as a result. Off the track there’s a team management mode that seems to have been inspired by Metal Gear Solid V’s Mother Base. Money earned in championships is spent on facilities and staff, unlocking the ability to buy better parts for your vehicles and bonuses like sponsors paying out greater sums of money and mid-championship repairs costing less. But it all happens through a series of dull, joyless menus, and although it’s compelling for a few hours, it soon begins to feel like a chore. It would have been nice to have some kind of visual representation of my team growing, because that doesn’t really come across when it’s all buried away in menus. I do like the sponsor system, though. The gaudy logos you plaster your car with aren’t just for show. If you team up with, say, electronics company Blaupunkt, they might be pleased if you finish a race cleanly without hitting anything. And if you do your relationship will improve, earning you more money. But it goes the other way too, and it’s possible to damage your partnerships with sponsors by failing to meet their needs. It’s the most interesting part of the career mode, because it ties into the minute-to-minute driving in a direct, meaningful way. If Dirt 2 was your annoying little brother wearing a backwards baseball cap and listening to Pendulum, Dirt 4 is your silver-haired dad reclining in a distressed leather chair with Desert Island Discs on the wireless. The tone is a lot more understated and serious, reminiscent of the old Colin McRae Rally series, and I welcome this with wide open arms. But it does lean a little too heavily into being earnest and minimalist, and sorely lacks any personality as a result. It’s so dry, although the lovely Welsh voice of rally legend Nicky Grist—who you can now choose as your co-driver—does bring a bit of colour to the thing. Dirt 4 is a fun, easy to play rally game with a lot of room for customisation depending on your skill level. Although you can push this too far and make winning an event an absolute nonsense. It’s well made, but lacks a certain sparkle. I appreciate the return to the more straight-faced rallying of the McRae series, but the punishing, refined driving of Dirt Rally is ultimately a lot more rewarding. But if you need an easier entry point to this, the muddiest of all motorsports, Dirt 4 might be your best bet.
  3. Imagine that later today you’re scheduled for a serious talk with some bigshot from management. You have a feeling an assignment is coming up, something big involving new responsibilities. It’s obviously in your best interest to get as much information as possible. What’s your plan? You could search for information on a public terminal; hack into the main servers; study the Dome’s strategic map in order to draw conclusions from key site placements; or find a Silver Wing associate and charm or intimidate them into sharing privileged information. There will be many different possibilities, and it’s up to the game to present them for you. But which solution you choose is always up to you. The road leading to this cave is obstructed by hazardous anomalies. You don’t know what’s inside. How dangerous said anomalies might be is also a mystery to you. But due to an overheard conversation between two people from a nearby village, this site is particularly tempting. What to do... You could attempt to find a different way in; use scientific equipment to discharge the anomalies; use your agility to cautiously squeeze past them; put your visor down and take your armor for a test run; or simply turn back. In every situation, you will have several options for finding a way in or out. In the darkness of the alternative past, bunkers littler the desert. Along with the turrets guarding them. Here is a situation every genre-loving gamer has experienced at least once: You need to get inside, but the entrance is guarded. Problem is, you don’t know if the bunker’s inhabitants and their turrets see you as an enemy or a friend. It’s probably a good idea to double check. But the easiest way is not always the right one. Maybe you should look around for a secret tunnel; ask an inhabitant on a smoke break about the pros and cons; use your lockpick and hacking skills; or just throw an EMP grenade and tell everyone it was a lightning strike. A motivated individual will always find a way. What could be better than a cozy evening enjoying the warmth of a post-apocalyptic bonfire? An evening spent on nothing but quality time. Fun activities may include: scaring away a gang of raiders attracted by your fire; stealthily accessing the storeroom of a deserted filling station; eavesdropping on the latest secrets and gossip of the folks occupying the nearby ruins; or engaging in some fair (or not so fair) trade with the locals. Don’t forget to admire the beautiful scenery on the way! Is there anything beautiful to be found in a swamp? If you don’t mind getting your hands, legs and everything else dirty, then yes. Otherwise CRONUS wouldn’t send yet another expedition into these parts. Truth be told, all participants are currently MIA. A slightly rusty, tracked vehicle is the only sign of the expedition’s passing. Now you have to map an uncharted, toxic swamp, fight off monsters, look for traces of survivors, search their corpses for evidence, and finally put their sad story together. Or maybe you’ll go your own way and pursue your own goals. Though the swamps will be no less unpleasant, this need not be the main episode of your gaming experience. While conquering the Dome and its virtual territories, don’t forget about the real world. Or rather about Steam, our bridge between the digital and the material.
  4. After spending some time with No Man’s Sky VR (on Vive), there are three things that I admire about this game. First, and most impressive, is the sheer thrill of space travel, writes Colin Campbell. I don’t mean the floaty, intergalactic kind of virtual star-tourism. I mean the gritty feeling of being on an alien planet, hopping into a one-person spaceship, and blasting off. In the VR version of this space-exploration game, I enjoy the whooshy sensation of high speed, high altitude acceleration. I also love the neat perspective of a receding planetary surface behind me, and that glorious oooomph of breaking through the membrane of atmospheric gunk, into the clarity of space. Before me, I see new planets to discover. This is VR at its most compelling, putting me in fantastical places and giving me viewpoints that I can never expect to attain in real life. Second, is one particular ground-based tool. No Man’s Sky is about jumping from one planet to another, exploring surfaces on foot, and gathering resources. I use various gadgets to unlock minerals and other stuff. But the device I like best of all is a bore. I mean, it’s used for boring holes in the ground. This is available in the basic non-VR game, but somehow blasting holes and tunnels in the ground feels more exciting in VR. Although I only played a short demo, I feel like I’ll spend a lot of time with the final game, just tunnelling, creating underground spaces. My final point is more technical. No Man’s Sky is a complicated game that’s been through years of iterations and tweaks. As a virtual reality user interface problem, it’s clearly an order above most VR games, with its panoply of tools and its range of activities. It took me a while to figure out the controls, but once I understood where the designers at Hello Games were going, I began to appreciate the work they’d done. I won’t say the controls are intuitive, exactly, but in the context of VR, they seem to work. No Man’s Sky is a game that demands long hours of play, so comfort is important. I’m curious to see how much time I’m going to want to devote to this, when it comes out this summer, as part of the game’s Beyond update. Now, over to Mike McWhertor, who’s been playing the PSVR version .... Experiencing No Man’s Sky in VR on a PlayStation 4 was a very different kind of trip, writes Mike McWhertor. I played, sitting down, with a pair of PlayStation Move motion controllers. I teleported my spaceman from place to place, reaching back to pull a gun from my shoulder holster, and aiming, shooting, and punching at precious minerals to gather resources for my trek. It was all a bit weird, fiddling with a holographic pop-up display on the digital gloves that mimicked my hands in No Man’s Sky’s virtual world. But it worked; Hello Games made this lightspeed jump to VR gracefully. I had developer Sean Murray in my ear the whole time. He condensed what he said was an hours-long ramp up of tutorials meant to teach players No Man’s Sky VR in just 20 minutes. He showed me how to teleport — the go-to movement scheme for first-person VR — around an alien world, where I could instantly move into a dark cave or on top of my personal settlement, giving me two very different perspectives on this world. He showed me how to interact with objects like healing stations and characters: by reaching out with my left hand Move controller, “gripping” by pressing the rear trigger button, and pulling on an invisible cord. It felt good. Most of No Man’s Sky VR feels good. The closest I came to not feeling good while skipping around a planet and launching my personal spacecraft toward the stars was during my ship’s initial take off. I gripped the flight control stick with my right hand, pushed forward on the throttle with my left, and rocketed off the planet’s surface. For a brief moment, my stomach sank. Murray instructed me to look right and left, and I saw the planet pull away. I was soon in space, and everything seemed briefly dangerous. But No Man’s Sky is generous in letting me fly into a spaceport and dock without dying, and virtually gripping my ship’s controls seemed to help ground me. Hello Games is offering alternate control schemes that don’t require Move controllers. Players will be able to freely move around space with a DualShock 4, if they want to. And players should use No Man’s Sky’s VR mode as an excuse to revisit the game. Experiencing it in virtual reality was refreshing, edging us closer to the grand promise of No Man’s Sky that Hello Games continues to deliver on in free updates.
  5. t was a warm summer’s evening and Verity Johnson was heading to the shops in York, on her way home from work. A careful motorist, on familiar roads, she was proudly driving her new Volkswagen Beetle Convertible. As she travelled at 60mph on a busy single-carriageway A-road, a BMW shot out from a junction on her left, into Johnson’s path, leaving her no time to brake. She swerved sharply but the inevitable, violent collision span the VW down the road like a tin can. It finally stopped facing the wrong way as motorists rushed to her aid. Neither driver was badly hurt - at least not physically. Verity’s insurer successfully claimed for the damaged Beetle and police assured her she was not to blame....
  6. esterday was Mother’s Day and social media naturally was awash with heartwarming pictures of hand drawn cards, spring bouquets, breakfast trays on beds as well as the usual portrait shots of grown up mothers and daughters, grandmothers, and everyone generally beaming and thankful, taking a moment to celebrate the wonderful matriarch in their life. But alongside the stream of gush and love ran a burbling river of discontent, emanating from those for whom Mother’s Day is no longer a day to celebrate - or perhaps never has been - but more a scab unwillingly prized open to reveal a sore and open wound. Whether that be down to the loss of their own mother or child, an awkward relationship with their...
  7. he son of Alex Younger, the head of MI6, has been killed in an accident on a Scottish estate. Sam Younger, 22, who was the middle child of the intelligence chief, died in the early hours of Saturday morning on a private estate in Stirlingshire, according to Police Scotland. It is understood the Edinburgh University student died in a car crash, but police declined to give any further details, other than to say there were no suspicious circumstances. Police Scotland also declined to name the Scottish estate, where the accident took place, although, the wider Younger family once owned the Leckie Estate, which is in Stirlingshire. Mr Younger, 55, and his wife, along with their two other children, aged 24 and 20, appealed for privacy to grieve and celebrate the life of their "wonderful, fun loving son". Sam was a former pupil of Dulwich College in south London, where he played rugby for first XV. The public school, where old boys are known as Old Alleynians, after the founder Edward Alleyn, paid tribute to him. The Old Alleynians Association said: "It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Sam Younger (OA 2006 - 2015). Sam died in a car accident in Scotland in the early hours of Saturday morning. "A selfless, big hearted, fun loving and committed Alleynian, and Old Alleynian, we offer heartfelt condolences to Sam's family and friends." Another statement on Twitter, referring to the school colours, added: "He was black and blue until he died - loved every brick of the place." Kieran Oberman, senior political philosophy lecturer at Edinburgh University, and Sam's personal tutor, said: "Sam was a lovely student, always warm and friendly. He seemed confident and excited about the future. We are devastated by the tragic news of his death and our thoughts are with his family and friends." A statement from Police Scotland said: "Police Scotland can confirm that Sam Younger, a 22-year-old student from Edinburgh University, has died following an accident involving a motor vehicle on a private estate in Stirlingshire on Saturday 30th March 2019. "The family have provided that they wish privacy and space to remember and celebrate their wonderful son. "The death is being treated as unexplained, however there does not appear to be any suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course, as is standard procedure." His family issued a photograph summing up his adventurous spirit, which featured him on an overseas motorcycle trip in 2017. Sam was born in Vienna in 1996, at a time when his father was stationed there with MI6. A former economics graduate and British army officer, Mr Younger, joined the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) in 1991 and was stationed as an operational officer in various locations around Europe and the Middle East. After rising through the ranks, he became a senior operational officer in Afghanistan, based there during the war. He was appointed head of the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) in November 2014, becoming the 16th person to lead MI6, but the first to be officially named. Like all his predecessors, he is known by his colleagues as 'C', and writes only in green pen when working on official documents. His grandfather was the 3rd Viscount Younger of Leckie, who was an heir to a brewing fortune, and he is a cousin to the late George Younger, who was Secretary of State for Defence under Margaret Thatcher. The Younger family owned the sprawling 1,546 Leckie estate in Stirlingshire, which boasts a pheasant shoot and a grouse moor. But the estate was sold for £3.4 million in 2015 following the death of George's widow, Diana, Viscountess Younger.

  10. spent part of my childhood in Bedfordshire, and confess that I wasn’t a fan. My family moved from London to a village there in the early 1970s. We found a rural/industrial landscape of big, flat fields, often battered by marauding winds. The wide horizon was peppered with huge brick factories that belched smoke and sometimes perfumed those winds with a sulphurous stink. Stubble-burning was still legal, and the smoke from incinerated fields added to the dystopian feel, as did the huge abandoned clay pits, some used for landfill. So I was glad to leave, and have been rude about the county ever since.

  11. or wine drinkers the length and breadth of the country, Majestic Wine has long been an important presence on the retail scene. Revolutionary when it first opened, it bridged the gap between the indies and the supermarkets; and it did so with style, offering attractive bottles at affordable prices. By summer, however, Majestic may be gone. This week Rowan Gormley, its chief executive, announced that the brand and its 200 or so stores were up for sale – “We are open to any permutation of sale, from someone buying the whole business through to people wanting to buy a number of stores.” If no one does step up, then the Majestic business will be run down, the name dropped, and what remains of it...
  12. heresa May must not be allowed to lead the Conservatives into a snap election, senior Tories have warned. A series of ministers and MPs have told The Telegraph the party would be “annihilated” at the polls if the Prime Minister insisted on fighting a campaign to face down Parliament over Brexit in the coming months. The warning came as it emerged that senior ministers have virtually given up any hope of the Democratic Unionist Party, which is propping up the Government, supporting Mrs May’s Brexit deal. Its MPs’ refusal to budge means she faces a growing likelihood that Parliament will legislate this week to force her into seeking a soft Brexit, if backbenchers can agree on a specific plan....
  13. Welcome to a world where technology has sealed our fate and finally led to the World War. Those of us who made it are now living in ruined cities behind steel gates that separate the cities from one another and from deadly creatures roaming the wastelands. The only thing that stands between us and them are the remotely controlled war machines called ARMZ. But no machine, no matter how powerful, would be of any use without YOU, its operator. ArmZ VR is a hellishly dynamic wave shooter that allows you to become one with a huge, heavily-armed Battle Mech! Your goal? To guard the city walls against constant attacks of horrifying human-machine hybrids. Be sure they’ll use all their skills, weapons and won’t hesitate to sacrifice their life when needed, as unlike any living being, they’re not driven by a self-preservation instinct but pure will to kill. You however have what your opponents don’t. ARMZ war machine that adapts to your preferred combat style. Not fancy of sophisticated battle tactics, strategic thinking and planning three moves ahead? Grab those miniguns, start a barrage fire and cover the battle field with a hail of bullets until no hostile creature is left with its head still sticking from above the ground. “Rambo style” combat not your cup of tea? Good! Be sure your robotic arms are capable of way more than just pulling the trigger. Use them, to get cover from bombs. Equip your mech with a harpoon to eliminate enemies from the distance. Drag them, crush them, watch them bleed and throw away what’s left of them. Then enjoy observing what impact your little horrifying show had on remaining enemies, that will literally freeze in fear. And once the situation on a battle field gets really serious, wait for the hostile horde to come anyway near an explosive, then blow it and enjoy the mayhem. And you better be ready to make a good use of your mech’s weapons and defensive skills at all times, as each opponent you’ll be facing, starting from heavily-armored Guards having a shield and hammer at his disposal, to flying, bomb-throwing Jumpers, has their own set of skills and combat strategies, challenging your wits and testing your tactical talents. You can play the game standing, or sitting comfortably in a chair, but you must not forget to be constantly looking in different directions and using both hands and weapons at the same time, as death can come from literally anywhere. So keeping your eyes around your head will be crucial for your victory in combat. The same applies when properly deciding on which targets to destroy first during the battle. The situation on the battlefield changes dynamically, so you need to be both quick and creative when developing your offensive-defensive strategies. Feel what it’s like to operate a huge, combat mech of the future! A dynamic, tactical wave shooter that will require you to bring your A game; Enjoy a set of different weapons designed to perfectly match your preferred combat strategy; Fight diversified opponents, each with their unique skills and combat style; Face your opponents in three completely different environments of this post-apocalyptic, dying world; Defend, die, repeat. Improve your skills and make sure no nasty thing goes through those gates! ArmZ VR is a result of a huge effort of a small independent development team, that’s entirely focused on one thing and one thing only – to make VR gaming as immersive as possible. Reaching that goal won’t be possible without your support however. So put on your VR goggles, grab those controls and help us make our game as great as it can possibly be! The best way to reach us with your feedback, comments, suggestions, requests and whatnot, is via Steam forums, so feel free to share your thoughts there. We look forward to hearing from you and see you on the battle field!
  14. Hi everyone, It’s time for a new community update about MudRunner and what we have planned for the future. We know that many of you are wondering if MudRunner will see more content added or if the next step is the release of MudRunner 2. We’re happy to confirm that we have a new free DLC planned for MudRunner. We’ll unveil more details about this DLC in the upcoming months but you can expect something similar to the various free DLCs already released for MudRunner, such as The Ridge or The Valley. Most of the team is now focused on the development of MudRunner 2. During Focus’ yearly press event “What’s Next”, much more info will be shared about the game. As some of you noticed, although it was originally scheduled for February, it has been moved to April 10-11. We’re sorry about this but it’s ultimately for the best, as we’ll have a lot more to show in April. MudRunner Community Survey Today, we’re happy to share this community survey, that we’ve prepared to get your feedback and suggestions about the future of the MudRunner franchise. Click here to answer the MudRunner Community Survey[docs.google.com]. You'll need about 10 minutes to fill out this survey. We'll close it in two weeks. We want to be completely clear that the purpose is not to get a list of features for MudRunner 2. The development of MudRunner 2 is going great, and most features have already been locked down. We can’t wait to share more about that with you all! The purpose of this survey is for us to get to know all of you a little better, for the benefit of the overall MudRunner experience, franchise, and future. Please do not interpret these questions as indications of what might appear in MudRunner 2. The survey should take 10 minutes to complete. These questions have been chosen based on all your feedback since the launch of Mudrunner, be it from the Forums, Discord, Steam, or elsewhere. Please share this survey with your MudRunner friends. Thanks once again for your passion and dedication to improving the MudRunner experience!
  15. Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson hasn’t been involved in the game’s development for several years, with studio Mojang being acquired by Microsoft and left to update and add to the game on its own. If you start up Minecraft today, however, you might not even realize that someone named Notch was ever involved with the game at all. According to Kotaku, the mentions of Persson previously viewable at the beginning of the game is no longer there, though he is still listed in the game’s credits. The official Minecraft Twitter account has not mentioned the change in its tweets, with Mojang apparently choosing to remove mention of the controversial figure in a quiet manner. Notch posted several tweets directed at the change but didn’t appear to be overly bothered by it, telling one fan that “there’s beauty” in what happened.

  19. he Pininfarina Battista electric hypercar, said to be capable of more than 217mph, will make its UK debut during the 77th Goodwood Members’ Meeting on April 5, its first public outing since appearing at the Geneva Motor Show in March. The 1,900hp EV has been raising eyebrows since it was first announced in Rome a year ago. Pininfarina, an Italian design house best known for working with vehicle manufacturers rather than designing its own cars, will become one of the newest brands in the small but curiously po[CENSORED]r battery-electric hypercar market. Nick Heidfeld, a former Formula 1 and Formula E racer, is Automobili Pininfarina's lead development driver and has been "tasked with tuning the Battista's dynamic performance". He, along with several cars from Pininfarina's back catalogue, will be at Goodwood for the launch. “It is a privilege to return to Goodwood for the UK debut of the Pininfarina Battista,” said Heidfeld. “The Members’ Meeting is full of legendary sports cars that in many cases have become game changers. We aim for Battista to be regarded in the same way in the future and to be recognised for the perfect combination of beautiful aesthetics and unprecedented performance. “The innovative EV powertrain beneath the Battista’s carbon fibre body and monocoque provides the perfect platform on which to develop the most powerful car that will have ever been designed and built in Italy. I’m looking forward to sharing the past, present and future of Pininfarina and presenting the Battista at Goodwood in April.” Prospective clients are requested to apply for ownership and, with a current price of an estimated €2m, the Battista is unlikely to become a common sight. What's more, just fifty are set to be produced for Europe, making it already one of the rarest EVs ever built.
