National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA's) Hubble Space Telescope captured a series of photos of asteroid Dimorphos when it was deliberately hit by a 1,200-pound NASA spacecraft called DART on September 26, 2022, according to their statement. Hubble's time-lapse movie of the aftermath of DART's collision reveals surprising and remarkable, hour-by-hour changes as dust and chunks of debris were flung into space, NASA said in their statement. Though neither Didymos nor Dimorphos poses any threat to Earth, data from the mission will help inform researchers how to potentially divert an asteroid's path away from Earth, if ever necessary, the statement said. The statement described that the Hubble movie starts at 1.3 hours before impact. In this view both Didymos and Dimorphos are within the central bright spot; even Hubble can't resolve the two asteroids separately. The thin, straight spikes projecting away from the center (and seen in later images) are artifacts of Hubble's optics. The first post-impact snapshot is 2 hours after the event. Debris flies away from the asteroid, moving with a range of speeds faster than four miles per hour, fast enough to escape the asteroid's gravitational pull, so it does not fall back onto the asteroid, the statement said. The ejecta forms a largely hollow cone with long, stringy filaments. At about 17 hours after the impact the debris pattern entered a second stage. The dynamic interaction within the binary system starts to distort the cone shape of the ejecta pattern, the statement described. The most prominent structures are rotating, pinwheel-shaped features. The pinwheel is tied to the gravitational pull of the companion asteroid, Didymos. "This is really unique for this particular incident," said Li. "When I first saw these images, I couldn't believe these features. I thought maybe the image was smeared or something." Hubble next captures the debris being swept back into a comet-like tail by the pressure of sunlight on the tiny dust particles, the statement said. This stretches out into a debris train where the lightest particles travel the fastest and farthest from the asteroid. The mystery is compounded later when Hubble records the tail splitting in two for a few days, the statement said. A multitude of other telescopes on Earth and in space, including NASA's James Webb Space Telescope and Lucy spacecraft, also observed the DART impact and its outcomes. Probably the best cake destruction physics you'll see this year. A new video of Dead Island 2(opens in new tab) shows off about 15 minutes of gameplay, highlighting the absolutely over-the-top gorefest(opens in new tab) that is its ranged and melee combat. It's full of campy-to-annoying dialogue and cheap laughs, but they're still effective. Honest to God more than anything it reminds me of the absolutely absurd tone of modern American Professional Wrestling. The trailer follows "slayer" character Dani through an upscale LA neighborhood as she bashes, stabs, shoots, and otherwise splatters zombies while cracking a bunch of cheesy and/or annoying quips. (Sounds like something else we saw recently(opens in new tab).) Again, though, the approach to atmospheric violence, outrageous fighting, and campy dialogue more than anything reminds me of the absolute silliness that is wrestling. It's a decent promise of variety, as the gameplay reveal promises "dozens" of different zombie types which are best dealt with using different weapons and skills. It also shows off the abilities of the protagonist "slayers," who are seemingly immune to the zombie plague but have had their DNA mutated by it anyways. That lets Dani enter "fury mode" and grow claws and strength that can toss zombies across the room. There's more than just splattering shown off, as the trailer dives into systems like the obligatory crafting of weird weapons: Katana with a flaming propane nozzle, electrified fist claws, etc. There are also what developer Dambuster calls "curveballs," weird limited-use powers like meatbait, a "sack of blood and guts to draw zombies away from you." Naturally a crafting system means that you will spend far more time gathering garbage than the five seconds in this trailer that the protagonist spends picking up garishly highlighted wire, lightbulbs, and random chemicals in a broom closet. Also on display are the skill cards(opens in new tab) that are replacing the talent tree from Dead Islands of yore. These let you customize your character with powers and stunts like stylish mid-air full-body dropkicks (wrestling!) and slamming ground stomps to trip up nearby enemies (also wrestling!). Near the trailer's end there's also a series showing off Apex Zombies, which are "hyper-mutated" zombies with unique behaviors. Examples included a spike-covered punk monster with spike arms, a big burned-up guy wearing chains, the obligatory fat vomiting monster, and—perhaps the most pro wrestling of all—a giant bridezilla monster near the end. (Which is the part most worth watching because I am not joking they 100% definitely used their elaborate zombie-gooping explosion physics on a cake.) Going into coalition is better than opposition, Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price said after his party backed getting into government as a means to achieve independence. Party members endorsed the plan at party conference on Saturday. The strategy suggests that after an election Plaid would aim to be at least a junior partner with a larger party in government. But Mr Price says the party's goal remains leading Wales. There have been debates for years in Plaid about how much the party should co-operate with Welsh Labour. Mr Price has ruled out any coalition with the Conservatives. Plaid is currently in a co-operation agreement with Mark Drakeford's Welsh government. Researchers in New Zealand have unearthed fossils from two previously unknown ancient penguin species. One of the new species is the largest penguin ever discovered. Scientists have unearthed the fossilized remains of the largest ever known penguin on Earth, a 340-pound (154 kilograms) behemoth that glided through the oceans around what is now New Zealand more than 50 million years ago. The fossils of this newfound species, Kumimanu fordycei, were found alongside eight other specimens inside beach boulders in North Otago, on New Zealand's South Island. Five of the remaining specimens belonged to another newfound species, Petradyptes stonehousei, one belonged to another known giant penguin, Kumimanu biceae, and two were unidentified. The rocks dated to between 59.5 million and 55.5 million years ago. In a study, published Feb. 8 in the Journal of Paleontology(opens in new tab), researchers estimated the weight of the two newfound species based on the size and density of their bones compared with those of modern penguins. The team found that P. stonehousei weighed around 110 pounds (50 kilograms), which is slightly above the weight of living emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri). K. fordeycei would have weighed more than three times that, tipping the scales at a whopping 340 pounds. For comparison, the average 20-year-old man in the U.S. weighs 198 pounds (90 kg), according to Healthline(opens in new tab). (Without a near-complete skeleton, the researchers weren't able to estimate the body length of the new species.) "According to our analyses, K. fordycei is the biggest penguin currently known," study first author Daniel Ksepka(opens in new tab), a palaeontologist and curator at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut, told Live Science in an email. The next largest, K. biceae, weighed around 267 pounds (121 kg) and had a body length of around 5.8 feet (1.8 m). The two new species were likely among some of the first ancient penguins. The new discovery could shed light on how the group evolved over time. The new species had "relatively primitive flipper bones," Ksepka said. "In many ways [they] resemble those of birds that can both fly through the air and propel themselves underwater with their wings, such as auks and puffins." (But neither of the new species could fly.) Penguins likely lost the ability to fly in favor of swimming around 60 million years ago, not long before the new species likely emerged. So these early penguins had not yet evolved the super-efficient flippers seen in younger ancient penguins and their living relatives. The enormous size of K. fordycei shows that gigantism evolved early on in the penguin lineage, Ksepka said. "It goes to show that the advantages of large size, such as more efficient thermoregulation and diving, probably exerted very strong selective pressure on penguins soon after they lost flight." The unique environmental conditions of ancient New Zealand played a key role in the emergence and success of giant penguins, the researchers speculate. "There are good feeding grounds offshore for marine birds, and there were no land mammals other than bats in New Zealand before humans arrived, which makes for safer nesting areas." What caused their extinction is still an "unresolved question," but it is likely that the enormous birds were eventually outcompeted by marine mammals of similar size, Kspeka said. K. fordcyei may be the largest known penguin so far, but it's possible that even larger birds roamed New Zealand. Russian and Ukrainian forces are fighting in the streets of Bakhmut - but Russia does not control the eastern city, its deputy mayor has said. Oleksandr Marchenko also told the BBC the remaining 4,000 civilians are living in shelters without access to gas, electricity or water. Mr Marchenko said "not a single building" had remained untouched and that the city is "almost destroyed". Bakhmut has seen months of fighting, as Russia tries to take charge. "There is fighting near the city and there are also street fights," Mr Marchenko said. Taking the city would be a rare battlefield success in recent months for Russia. But despite that, the city's strategic value has been questioned. Some experts say any Russian victory could be pyrrhic - that is, not worth the cost. Thousands of Russian troops have died trying to take Bakhmut, which had a pre-war po[CENSORED]tion of around 75,000. Ukrainian commanders estimate that Russia has lost seven times as many soldiers as they have. On Saturday, UK military intelligence said Russian advances in the northern suburbs had left the Ukraine-held sections vulnerable to Russian attacks on three sides. Mr Marchenko accused the Russians of having "no goal" to save the city and that it wanted to commit "genocide of the Ukrainian people". "Currently there is no communication in the city so the city is cut out, the bridges are destroyed and the tactics the Russians are using is the tactic of parched land," Mr Marchenko told the Today programme. The fall of Bakhmut has long been predicted, but for more than six months it hasn't happened. So any reports of potential Ukrainian withdrawal should be treated with caution. It is hard to know what is going on without independent sources. Both sides have a greater incentive to confuse their enemy than provide accurate information. But it may be that Ukrainian commanders are beginning to calculate that the cost of defending Bakhmut - in terms of blood and treasure - is now too great, despite the grievous losses being inflicted on Russian troops. And if so, then they might want what Western analysts call "a controlled fighting withdrawal" to protect the remaining Ukrainian forces so they can be redeployed. But any withdrawal may be hard fought and could take some time. Earlier this week, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the situation in the area was becoming "more and more difficult" - although the Ukrainian military said it had repelled numerous attacks since Friday. "I believe we shouldn't give any inch of our land to the enemy," Mr Marchenko said. "We should protect our land, we should protect our people and we should protect the businesses that are on this land." The city was "almost destroyed", with bridges ruined and communication cut off, Mr Marchenko added. "They want to destroy Bakhmut, they want to destroy the city like they did with Mariupol and Popasna," he said, referring to two cities in the east of Ukraine now under Russian control. The Russian military laid siege to the south-eastern port city of Mariupol at the outset of the invasion and took control after three months of artillery bombardment that killed thousands. Russia claimed the Donbas town of Soledar, about 10km (6.2 miles) from Bakhmut, in January following a long battle with the Ukrainian forces. Soledar, too, was reportedly reduced to a wasteland of flattened buildings and rubble by the time the Ukrainian army retreated. Droughts and low rainfalls affected the entire region, Morocco saw production 60% below the average. Rabat - Morocco recorded the largest decrease in cereal production in North Africa in 2022, the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization’s quarterly report showed. North Africa’s aggregate cereal production for 2022 is estimated at 33 million tonnes, 10% below the region’s previous five-year average. The aggregate wheat harvest suffered the most, dropping to 16.6 million tonnes, almost 20% below the average. Morocco’s output was estimated at nearly 3.3 million tonnes, a sharp 60% decrease from the average. The report attributes the decrease to the drought that the country experienced in 2022. Throughout the year, Morocco suffered its worst drought in decades, heavily affecting its rain-reliant yet vitally important agriculture field. The FAO estimated that the region’s aggregate cereal import requirements stand at 51 million tonnes in the 2022-23 year, an increase of 2% from the average in order to compensate for the reduced production. Part of those imports would also go into states’ reserves, to prepare better for similar future situations. The reduced output has naturally had an effect on food prices in the region, with food price inflation continuing to increase at high levels in most of the region, with Libya being the sole exception. In Morocco, annual food inflation increased to over 10% by June 2022, before reaching a record 15.5% in December of the same year. The inflation rate was second only to Egypt’s staggering 48% by January 2023. Food prices have been rising recently as several crises disrupted global production and supply chains. Just as the world was emerging from the COVID-19 crisis which had significantly affected purchasing powers, the Russia-Ukraine war caused another spike as the two countries were significant exporters of grains and cereals. Wales' health minister says she has read the "riot act" to some executives at a troubled health board. Eluned Morgan has been under pressure after putting Betsi Cadwaladr into special measures for a second time. She said she wanted to see "next steps" to "follow through" on the findings of an audit report, which last week found the executive team was dysfunctional. Her decision on Monday triggered a row after she asked all of the health board's independent members to quit. It raised questions as to why board members, who say they had raised concerns about the NHS organisation with ministers themselves, had been targeted instead of executives. She told the Senedd a "process" would be followed with the executives who had legal rights to be respected, but she did not say what the process would be. It comes after Ms Morgan told BBC Wales earlier on Tuesday that ex-Betsi Cadwaladr independent board members could not "shrug off" responsibility for how the service is run. She said she lacked powers to make top managers quit but could intervene with independent board members. Those board members say her actions expose patients to "significant risk". Betsi Cadwaladr was already under "targeted intervention" from the Welsh government in a range of areas, including mental health services. Just two years ago it came out of special measures, after 1,996 days of being under more direct Welsh government oversight. In defending herself against opposition claims that she has sacked the wrong people, Eluned Morgan told the Senedd she doesn't have the power to get rid of senior executives at Betsi because she is not their employer. However she repeatedly dropped heavy hints that she expected action to be taken by the newly appointed independent board members. The first minister made a similar point in First Minister's Questions: "The fact that those actions were not taken yesterday should not be taken as meaning that no action will be taken at all. It's just that things have to be done in a way that respects people's legal rights and in a way that would stand up to external scrutiny." So what could that action be? The Clwyd South Labour MS Ken Skates inferred it could mean "huge change potentially within the executive team possibly further into middle management". 'Appalling' Welsh Conservative north Wales spokesman Darren Millar told the minister: "It's within the executive team that this [Audit Wales] report points to these problems, not with the independent board members who you forced to resign yesterday." He said it was "appalling". "I think it's about time that we have mechanisms in Wales to remove people like that, who do not accept their responsibility for failures when things go wrong." Rhun ap Iorwerth, health Spokesman for Plaid Cymru, said the health board "has to go", reiterating calls for reorganisation. "She tells us that breaking it up would be wrong when we are encouraging regional co-operation - Betsi can't even co-operate with itself." "Let's have a fresh start," he added. The former independent board members have said in a letter to the first minister that they had "no confidence" in the Welsh government's grasp of the situation. "It wasn't my job to have a grasp on things, they were in charge," Ms Morgan told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast on Tuesday. "They can't shrug off the responsibility and say it's my responsibility. We've had concerns about the health board for a while. "The straw that broke the camel's back was that Audit Wales report that made it very clear that the board was dysfunctional and, although there is a huge amount of criticism of the executive, with the current board it was clear that the relationships had broken down to such an extent that it didn't look they were able to make to make the changes that were necessary in the health board." As part of the changes chairman Mark Polin has been replaced by former Gwynedd council leader Dyfed Edwards. In their letter, the former independent board members alleged that responsibility for organisational culture, service quality and delivery "have been placed at our door without recognition of the limitation of our powers as independent members". "The response to the Audit Wales report, and her focus on independent members rather than the operational executive and their delivery, exposes patients across north Wales, and the organisation to significant risk going forward," they said. Mama orcas are forgoing having more young and instead dote on their existing sons. Killer whale mothers are sacrificing their own reproductive prospects to guarantee the future success of their sons. While it's no surprise that mothers make sacrifices for their young, researchers have found that orca (Orcinus orca) mothers are taking the mama's boy notion to the extreme, continuing to care for their sons into adulthood, even if it affects their future chances of reproduction, according to a new study published Feb. 8 in the journal Current Biology(opens in new tab). Researchers have found that this doting mother-son relationship is true amongst the 73 resident orcas that currently make up the "southern resident" po[CENSORED]tion, a group that inhabits the waters off the coasts of Washington state and British Columbia. Since 1976, researchers from the Center for Whale Research in Harbor, Washington, have been monitoring this well-studied po[CENSORED]tion and noticed this "bizarre social system" where the mothers continue to hunt for their adult sons, according to a statement(opens in new tab). Because orca groups are matrilineal, "both the sons and daughters stay within their mom's group for their whole lives in this po[CENSORED]tion of killer whales — and we think in most resident killer whale po[CENSORED]tions," first author Michael Weiss, research director for the Center for Whale Research, told Live Science. "But the sons especially keep strong social ties with their mothers and are more likely to follow their moms around." While sticking with their moms may prove beneficial for the males, the daughters, on the other hand, are cut off entirely from prey sharing by their moms once they reach sexual maturity, typically sometime between 6 and 10 years of age, according to the statement. Researchers think it all comes down to an evolutionary cost/benefit analysis. "Males are quite a bit bigger than females, so they need more calories and are also a little less maneuverable, so they may have less luck catching fish," Weiss said. "From the mom's point of view, there are some good reasons why they might want to preferentially help their sons. When daughters reproduce, their calf is in the same group as the grandma, and that means there's another mouth to feed in the group that might compete with the female's other offspring. So, there's a cost there to helping your daughter reproduce. Whereas with males, when they have their kids, they're usually born in someone else's group." He added, "You get the same benefits in terms of evolution, with your genes being passed on to the next generation, without the cost of having another mouth to feed." However, this coddling of males costs the mothers in the long run. Researchers found a "strong negative correlation" between females' caring for their grown sons and their probability of producing a viable calf. Each surviving son cuts a mother's chances of having a new calf by more than 50% in a given year, according to the statement. "As an example, a 21-year-old female who doesn't have any kids she's taking care of right now and hasn't reproduced in the previous year, has about a 1 in 5 chance of having a calf," Weiss said. "If that female has one son that she's taking care of, that chance drops to a 1 in 10 chance.
