Snowcrashed Fortnite Chapter 4 season 2 is here, boasting a psychedelic new trailer, along with a range of new cosmetics, items, and locations. Fortnite’s latest update promises all sorts of new goodies. Mega City, a brand new map comes with a new biome full of new locations including the tranquil cherry blossoms of Steamy Springs, the waters of Knotty Nets, and the frantic battles of Kenjutsu Crossing, just to name a few. The latest season(opens in new tab) also comes with two new weapons, the Havoc Pump Shotgun and the Havoc Suppressed Assault Rifle, as well as two new vehicles designed especially for Mega City’s winding streets. A new Battle Pass has also dropped. It’s full of futuristic character designs that would be right at home in the cyberpunk streets of Mega City and will set you back 950 V-Bucks. In a jarring twist, folks who grab the Battle Pass can also unlock Eren Jaeger, the protagonist of iconic anime Attack on Titan (now in its 4th season). However, given Mega City’s emphasis on grind rails and 3D traversal, the inclusion of wall-jumping, building-scaling Eren Jeager doesn’t seem quite as strange on second thought. The launch trailer for the new update shows off the new movement options wonderfully. Chic characters use grind rails to navigate Mega City’s futuristic metropolis, before we’re shown a glimpse of some of the other areas in the biome. The gentle cherry blossom trees of Steamy Springs look gorgeous as a stylish samurai cuts their way through adversaries while leaping across rooftops. It’s psychedelic, cyberpunk, and forth-wall breaking all at once. You wouldn't find this sort of thing in Call of Duty: Warzone or Player Unknown's Battlegrounds, that's for sure. I remember, back in the mists of time, seeing an advert for a zombie survival game called Fortnite on the side of a bus one morning as I walked to work. I never imagined that the title would one day serve up such a gorgeous neon-tinted melange of urban futurism for its players. It’s incredible to think that a game with relatively humble beginnings is now in a position where it can offer up such a wide breadth of experiences. I confess, I found the trailer rather charming. Fortnite seems willing to shatter the fourth wall with a cheeky wink and a wry smile. The folks behind the trailer are fully aware of how jarring it is to see Attack on Titan’s Eren Jeagar appear in an environment that looks like it might belong in Cyberpunk 2077. However, what’s also clear is that the artists and designers are reveling in the incongruity. They are right to do this because Fortnite at its heart is an expansive playset of dolls and action figures which invites the imaginations of players to run wild. The title deliberately and proudly breaks a lot of the arbitrary boundaries we set up in our fiction. There is something wonderfully childlike about Fortnite’s inherent playfulness, and it’s heartening to see that Epic seems committed to continuing this trend. link: https://www.techradar.com/news/fortnite-chapter-4-season-2-looks-like-cyberpunk-2077-on-a-mind-bending-sugar-rush

Nintendo announced a new event for mobile game Super Mario Run in celebration of the upcoming film. That's right; as part of the marketing for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo will temporarily allow players to check out more of the mobile game's levels for free. Technically, Super Mario Run is a free-to-play mobile game, giving players access to the first few courses without spending any money. But it does lock most of the game behind a $10 paywall after the first several courses. But as part of the event, Super Mario Run gives players access to a stage that would normally cost money to play. This stage will be available for free for one day before becoming locked again, giving players temporary access. Nintendo also confirmed that linking a Nintendo Account to the game will unlock an additional stage. The update doesn't add anything for existing players, but is more so meant to get newcomers to jump in. In addition, the full version of Super Mario Run will be available at a discount until May 31, 2023. Super Mario Run launched in 2016, and is currently available on iOS and Android. The Super Mario Bros. Movie releases in theaters on April 5, 2023. link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/super-mario-run-gets-new-event-in-celebration-of-upcoming-movie/1100-6512263/

Lemnis Gate had some great ideas, but they weren't enough to attract a durable playerbase. Time-bending multiplayer FPS Lemnis Gate won't reach its second birthday. An update from Ratloop Games and Frontier Foundry(opens in new tab), posted yesterday, has informed the game's players that the game will be removed from sale on April 11 pending the final shutdown of its multiplayer servers on July 11, a few months short of September 28, the would-be second anniversary of its release. For PC players, July 11 will be the last possible opportunity to play Lemnis Gate at all, according to the update from the devs. While console players will be able to "access local multiplayer and training modes" on their machines seemingly in perpetuity, PC players will "be unable to play beyond that point". Some players in the comments on the announcement(opens in new tab) are begging the devs to enable local play on PC after the game dies, but there's been no sign of a response yet. Hard luck if you only recently bought the game, I guess. To be fair, the likelihood that anyone has forked over the cash for Lemnis Gate in the last couple of months is actually pretty slim. The game last went on sale—for 60% off—in October last year, and since then its simultaneous player count has barely ever managed to hit a double digit figure. At time of writing, SteamDB(opens in new tab) lists five players in-game. It's not hard to see why the studio is pulling the plug. But while it's not a surprise, it is a shame. Lemnis Gate was an interesting and innovative FPS whose core mechanic—using time shenanigans to disrupt your opponent's plays in previous rounds—felt very fresh and very weird when it released in 2021. Robert Zak scored the game 84% in his Lemnis Gate review(opens in new tab) for PCG at the time, with particular praise for its "smart strategizing" and "dextrous gunplay," but noting even back then that it suffered from low player counts that made finding a game hard. It's been a bit of a bloodbath when it comes to game shutdowns in recent years. Lemnis Gate joins the dubious ranks of games like Hyperscape, Babylon's Fall, Fuser, and a whole host of other games(opens in new tab) that have moved to a nice farm upstate in the last year or so. Let's hope this is the one that finally ends the streak? link: https://www.pcgamer.com/theres-only-a-few-months-left-before-time-loop-fps-lemnis-gate-becomes-unplayable-on-pc-forever/

"I don't think anything prepares you for this kind of massacre, where the bull runs through the shop." That is how Guto Harri, a former Downing Street head of communications, remembered Boris Johnson's last days as prime minister. He told BBC Radio Cymru his time at Number 10 was "difficult, but very interesting and productive". He remembered last September when a deluge of Mr Johnson's cabinet ministers resigned. "[Rishi] Sunak said publicly that he was leaving his job as chancellor of the exchequer at the time," he said, "without even having the courtesy of telling the prime minister. "At least Sajid Javid, who was health secretary at the time, went to see the prime minister and told him face to face. "After that, things moved pretty quickly." People in Wales react to Boris Johnson's resignation PM declines to say if he backs BBC chairman Sharp Boris Johnson: A political career started in Wales Mr Harri was in the middle of the action at Number 10 between February and September 2022, when Mr Johnson was under pressure following reports of parties held at Downing Street during Covid. "I don't think anything prepares you for this kind of massacre, where the bull runs through the shop, where all authority disappears in an instant, everyone turns on each other, and no-one knows who's on their side and who's against them," he said. "There was a period where it wasn't totally clear that there weren't enough people to fill the [cabinet] jobs and that you could keep things going. But that period didn't last very long." Responding to reports he tried to encourage Mr Johnson to continue, Mr Harri said, "only one person can make that final decision, and that's the prime minister". "I didn't want him to turn round, like he's done before after taking major decisions, when he decided to pull out of the Conservative leadership race a few years ago," he said. "I think he really regretted that decision ever since. So I was very aware that he had to come to the conclusion that it was over and until he himself came to that conclusion, then my job, as one of his lieutenants, was to ensure that the show went on. "I think, by the end, when you had some ministers who were loyal to him and were very responsible in their attitude to public service, when one or two of those didn't want a promotion, they weren't going to create trouble for him by walking out, but they weren't ready to take another job, I think we'd realised that the writing was on the wall." link: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-64897213

Birds do produce urine, but it doesn't come out the same way it does in humans. How birds pee may be an evolutionary adaptation that benefits flight. Dogs lift their legs. Cats use a litter box. And birds do their business just about everywhere. But is this whitish-colored splat only bird poop? What about bird pee? "Their pee doesn't look like ours," said Sushma Reddy(opens in new tab), an associate professor of ornithology at the University of Minnesota. "It's not liquid." Instead, birds drop a white paste that contains both pee and feces. Birds have one hole to get rid of waste, called a cloaca. The cloaca is the multitool of a bird's anatomy: It leads to the urinary, digestive and reproductive tracts. It's through this hole that birds simultaneously pee and poop onto cars and unsuspecting humans. Related: Why do parrots live so long? Dinosaurs, the ancestors of birds, also had cloacas, as do amphibians, reptiles, some fishes and monotremes, such as platypuses. From an evolutionary perspective in birds, this one-and-done method of waste excretion likely was preserved because it was an adaptation toward flight, Reddy said. It takes a lot of energy to maintain flapping wings, so birds need to stay light and keep essential nutrients for long periods of flight and excrete the stuff they don't need quickly and efficiently as they're flying, Reddy said. Flying helps explain the differences between bird and mammal urinary systems. Mammals get rid of nitrogen waste by converting ammonia (a toxic substance) into urea that is then diluted in liquid. This is the urine that humans and other mammals pee. Birds convert nitrogen waste excreted by the kidneys into uric acid, which doesn't dissolve in water and comes out as a solid, as explained in a manual on "avian systems(opens in new tab)" from the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Extension Dodge County. This means birds can conserve water and don't need to carry around a heavy, full bladder. But bird pee may be more complex than previously understood. A study published in 2020 in the Journal of Ornithology(opens in new tab) tested the chemical composition of six avian species' pee and found no traces of uric acid. Instead, the scientists found compounds made of ammonium, magnesium and phosphate. Their results indicate that an unknown process modifies uric acid right before it exits the cloaca. Future studies with more bird species could help explain this mysterious transformation. Before reading this recent research paper, Reddy said that she and other ornithologists would have firmly stated that uric acid was the main ingredient of bird droppings dirtying car windshields. "Sometimes those things that are in textbooks are exactly what we should be testing again," Reddy said of the findings. Reddy uses bird droppings to study DNA, so understanding the exact composition of bird pee is important for her work. Her lab uses excrement from endangered piping plovers(opens in new tab) (Charadrius melodus) as a non-invasive way to collect genetic samples that provide information about the birds’ diets, their microbiome and even diseases. DNA gleaned from pee, Reddy said, is like "a lens into all these different things that we can tell about the birds." link: https://www.livescience.com/do-birds-pee

The government safety agency said it is aware of two separate incidents in 2023 where the wheel detached from the column. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into Tesla on Wednesday after receiving reports of Model Y steering wheels detaching from their respective columns. Documents published on Wednesday by NHTSA say that it's aware of two separate incidents involving 2023 Tesla Model Y vehicles where the steering wheel detached completely from the steering column while the cars were being driven. In both instances, the Model Ys in question were delivered without the retaining bolt necessary for securing the wheel to the column. The documents say that both incidents occurred at low vehicle mileage. NHTSA says its investigation, formally launched March 4, applies to an estimated 120,000-plus vehicles. One of the complaints noted in the NHTSA document, according to the Associated Press, can be traced back to a now-viral tweet that shows video of the detached wheel and the vehicle getting towed. The owner was originally charged $103.96 to repair the wheel before Tesla removed the charge. The owner was issued a new Model Y shortly after, The Verge reports. The investigation comes just a few weeks after Tesla was forced to recall 362,000 cars over its faulty self-driving beta system, which NHTSA determined could increase the risk of a crash when in use. That's just the latest in a long line of Tesla recalls that span all the way back to the 2012 model year. link: https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a43265980/tesla-model-y-steering-wheel-investigation/

It’s possible that you are searching for a sense of belonging stemming from your childhood, when you moved around a lot. Don’t rush this decision I’m torn between two places – London (my current home) and New Zealand, where my parents and sibling live. I’m a mixed race 29-year-old female, and moved around a lot as a child. My family settled in New Zealand when I was eight despite having zero connections there. In my early 20s, I left home to move to Australia, then London. Initially, I never wanted to go back to New Zealand as I felt isolated there as a teenager. When I first moved to London I started with nothing, but eventually landed a great job and developed close friendships. This took time and was not easy, especially in the midst of a pandemic. Now the friendships I have over here feel more gratifying than many of those I had growing up. However, after not being able to see my parents for three years because of Covid, and not having seen my sibling in five years, I’m considering moving back to New Zealand this year. Both my parents left their respective countries when they were my age. I spent very little time with extended family growing up and saw how difficult it was for my parents to remain close to theirs with so much distance between them. I’ve been thinking about starting a family of my own one day – and I’d want to raise children around my parents I’ve been thinking about starting a family of my own one day – and I’d want to raise children around my parents. This would mean dating someone who’s either from New Zealand or is open to living there, but the thought of leaving behind all of the wonderful relationships I’ve worked so hard to build over here makes me feel reckless. As far back as I can remember, I’ve had a preference for excitement over stability. I get an urge to break free from anything that begins to feel too predictable. Now that I feel genuinely settled in London, I wonder if I’m simply finding reasons to move away because I want a new challenge. I flip-flop between feeling as though I’m ready to give New Zealand another chance, and suspecting that I just want to shake things up again. What would you do? I wouldn’t make any decisions until I’d gone back to New Zealand for as long a holiday as possible. You haven’t been back for three years – I wonder if you’re projecting a fantasy on to it. I consulted UKCP-registered psychotherapist Mark Vahrmeyer, who looked to your childhood experience. Being raised in a different culture to that of your parents and travelling a lot meant you had to be “highly adaptable and learn to fit in quickly. But the flip side of that can be the lack of belonging.” What stood out to Vahrmeyer was that you were able to build your friendship group through the pandemic when no one could travel, and he wondered if this “presented an opportunity to build something over a longer period of time, when the option of travel had been removed. There’s the idea that you’ve done it in London so you’d be able to do it again somewhere else.”. And you might, but we wondered how that might work when the option of travel is there and you can flee again. If I were you, I’d go to New Zealand on holiday, see my family and see how I felt after that Part of being a child who travelled a lot is that you’re always the new kid, you’re always having to fit in. So that’s the familiar. What can become more scary is actually putting down roots – that’s the unknown. Vahrmeyer wondered if “this preference for excitement is actually a defence mechanism; and if you are confusing something actually quite traumatic [always travelling, never putting down roots] with excitement”. He also thought this was “more complex than just being torn between two places. I think you might be torn between the sense of belonging you’ve built and family.” Simply going by your letter, it sounds like you are very happy in London but there’s this pull to New Zealand based partly on duty, partly on not wanting to repeat what your parents did (raising a family without their family around them). But you are not your parents and the world is different now; communication is much easier, for one thing. link: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/mar/10/i-feel-the-pull-of-family-in-new-zealand-but-worry-about-leaving-my-london-life

At least nine people have died in a new wave of strikes across Ukraine in which Russia used powerful weapons, including rare hypersonic missiles. Russia had reportedly not fired Kinzhal hypersonic missiles - which can evade air defences - since the early months of the conflict. The latest barrage was the most severe to hit Ukraine for weeks. It cut power to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant - Europe's biggest - although it was later restored. On Thursday Russian defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said: "High-precision long-range air, sea and land-based weapons, including the Kinzhal hypersonic missile system, hit key elements of Ukraine's military infrastructure." It was the biggest day of Russian strikes on Ukraine since the end of January, The Ukrainian military claimed it had successfully shot down 34 cruise missiles and four Iranian-made Shahed drones. But it also said it had been unable to intercept the six Kinzhal ballistic missiles - nor was it able to destroy older weapons, such as Kh-22 anti-ship missiles and S-300 anti-aircraft missiles. "This was a major attack and for the first time with so many different types of missiles," the Reuters news agency quoted a Ukrainian air force spokesperson as saying. "It was like never before." President Vladimir Putin has highlighted Russia's investment in ballistic hypersonic missiles, which can travel at more than five times the speed of sound. How risky is stand-off over Ukraine's nuclear plant? Ukraine in maps: Tracking the war with Russia Nuclear energy operator Energoatom said the strike at the Zaporizhzhia plant had cut off the link between the facility and the Ukrainian power system. For the sixth time since it was taken over by Russia a year ago, the facility operated on diesel generators until the link was restored later on Thursday. Electricity is needed for cooling radioactive material present at the plant. "Today's loss of all external power once again demonstrated how fragile and dangerous the situation is for the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant," said Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Earlier on Thursday he had called for an international commitment to protect the plant, following a series of strikes since the invasion began. "Each time we are rolling a dice. And if we allow this to continue time after time then one day our luck will run out," Mr Grossi said. In the capital Kyiv, emergency services attended the scenes of blasts in western and southern districts. A missile also hit an energy facility in the port city of Odesa, triggering power cuts, its governor Maksym Marchenko said. Residential areas were also hit but no casualties were reported. Elsewhere, Ukraine's military says it has pushed back intense Russian attacks on the embattled eastern city of Bakhmut despite Russian forces claiming to have taken control of its eastern half. Moscow has been trying to take Bakhmut for months, as both sides suffer heavy losses in a grinding war of attrition. "The enemy continued its attacks and has shown no sign of a let-up in storming the city of Bakhmut," the general staff of the Ukrainian armed forces said. "Our defenders repelled attacks on Bakhmut and on surrounding communities." Between 20,000 and 30,000 Russian troops have been killed or wounded in the battle for the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut since it began last summer, Western officials say. The figures cannot be verified independently. link: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-64903202

Industrial activities in Morocco remain liable to a number of external risks caused by rising crude prices, and de-accelerating economic activities in the Eurozone. Rabat - Nearly 40% of industrial business owners have reported expecting sales to drop in the course of the first three months of 2023, reflecting an overall business climate clouded with uncertainty. According to a monthly survey from Morocco’s central bank, Bank Al-Maghrib (BAM) in January, around 30% of industrial business owners forecast a rise in sales, while only 7% expect sales to drop, and 23% reported having no visibility over sales. Regarding production, after months of rising crude materials, industrial business owners seem to be more optimistic about the prospect of recovery. 42% of surveyed business owners said they expect production to increase in the course of the three months following January. 23% reported that they forecast a stagnation in production, 6% said production would drop, and 29% said they have no visibility over the situation. The BAM survey indicates that Morocco’s Capacity Utilization Rate (CUR) stood at 72% in January 2023, down from 74% a month earlier. The rate reflects the country’s current production output compared to its potential output. While Morocco’s economic growth will likely accelerate to 3.1% at the end of 2023, up from 1.2% in 2022, the country’s economy is still liable to a multitude of external shocks, according to the World Bank. Morocco’s industrial sector is especially vulnerable to the economic crisis looming on the horizon for the European Union, which is currently Morocco’s largest trading partner. In 2019, 64% of the North African country’s exports went to the EU. Growth in the EU is forecasted to drop to 0.8% this year, compared to 3.5% in 2022. The spillover from the decelerating economic growth in the Eurozone is expected to affect Morocco’s exports. If we look compare these performance numbers to the Intel Core i9-12900K, we would see that the Dragon Range chip is on par in multi-threaded performance and 6% faster in single-threaded performance with clocks of up to 5.2 GHz. What's more impressive is the fact that the Core i9-12900K can consume up to 250W of power whereas the Dragon Range chip consumes around 50-60W of power when running similar multi-threaded tests. The only thing left to see is whether AMD can offer their Dragon Range lineup including the Ryzen 9 7845HX in decent quantities. In the last couple of generations, AMD has had supply issues in the laptop CPU segment which allowed Intel to claw away market share. AMD does have great products but they should really work hard to fix supply constraints in the notebook segment as the demand for their laptop chips is going to be overwhelming considering the performance efficiency and value their chips offer. Plus, Clyde and AutoMod get an AI-focused update. Discord is the latest company to dive into the world of AI, introducing an AI-powered chatbot, AI-driven moderation settings, conversation summaries, and more. Over on its blog, Discord revealed a selection of new features it will be introducing to the chat service. First up there's Clyde, who you've probably seen when making some mistakes in your server. As of some time next week, Clyde will be a bit more lifelike, using OpenAI to be able to answer questions and have conversations with anyone in a server. Like you, Clyde can also recommend playlists, and use GIFs and emojis. AI-generated conversation summaries are one of the big additions on the way, which are designed with the expressservice of catching server members up on large numbers of chat messages. This is divided into topics, with keyboard shopping and travel plans presented as examples, with a limited number of servers will be able to test the feature starting next week. The AI updates are also coming to Discord's AutoMod feature. AutoMod currently blocks unwanted messages in a server, which it will more strictly enforce depending on the settings. With AutoMod AI, which also uses OpenAI, moderators will be alerted when server rules are broken, "keeping in 'mind' the context of a conversation." A limited number of servers will be able to use this feature starting from today. Other smaller additions include avatar remix, which lets users remix each others' avatars using generative image models, and developers can start experimenting with today using the avatar remix code on GitHub. The highly requested shared whiteboard feature is on the way too, which can also turn doodles into AI-generated images through a text-to-image generator. link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/discord-is-bringing-its-chatbot-clyde-to-life-with-ai/1100-6512197/

2015's Blockstorm sits at 'very positive' on Steam with over 6,500 user reviews. GhostShark Games is best known for 2019's unique spaced-out puzzler Still There(opens in new tab), but the studio's first game was 2015's Blockstorm. The game basically smooshed-together a fast Quake-style shooter with a Minecraft-inspired sandbox, the latter part of which allowed extensive customisation of avatars, maps, modes and weapons. Blockstorm has attracted near-universal acclaim from Steam reviewers over its lifespan, with just under 6,500 reviews putting it at "very positive", but the recent reviews have not been so great. Mainly this is because it's a multiplayer only game and, in the last year or so, the playerbase has moved on to other things. So GhostShark and publisher IndieGala had a decision to make… and it's done the opposite of what companies like Meta do(opens in new tab). Rather than sending Blockstorm up to that great voxel graveyard in the sky, those behind it have made the choice to set it free. Blockstorm has been sold at the discounted price of around $5 in recent years, with frequent discounts below even that, but now the whole kit-and-caboodle is yours for nowt, nish, a song, a mere click on your Steam library(opens in new tab). "We want to thank our dedicated community of players for their support and feedback over the years," said GhostShark in a statement. "We hope that going free-to-play, our gift to all of our loyal fans and involved community, will encourage even more players to join the Blockstorm community and enjoy the game." Well, better than a kick in the teeth. Whether this is enough to give Blockstorm a new lease of life remains to be seen, but there are enough po[CENSORED]r elements here that one could easily imagine what GhostShark calls a "passion project" having much more success than it has: And perhaps that magic price tag of zero will attract enough players to keep it alive for some time to come. Lord knows that we all grouse when a studio closes down an old title that no longer has enough players to stay afloat: So trying to keep Blockstorm alive, rather than just quietly removing it from sale, has to be applauded. link: https://www.pcgamer.com/studio-makes-its-beloved-destructible-fps-free-in-bid-to-keep-it-alive/

Labour politicians, including the first minister, have voted for a Welsh Parliament motion criticising their own roads review. The motion, which regretted the review's "lack of engagement" with the public, passed in a vote on Wednesday evening. Mike Hedges, Labour MS for Swansea East, said the review was rushed and "needs to be rectified". Ministers say the public would be consulted as schemes are developed. Labour backbenchers have previously attacked the government's policy after most major road schemes were scrapped. One source suggested the government position changed after some backbenchers had threatened to vote with the Conservatives, after ministers failed to table their own amendment. Deputy Climate Change Minister Lee Waters, who led the Welsh government's response to the roads review, did not take part in the vote, or any other votes on Wednesday. It is understood that he had been expected to go on a trip to France that was cancelled at the last minute - he was paired with a Conservative MS. After the debate the Conservatives accused Labour of admitting their review was flawed. One Labour source, expressing surprise with the whipped vote, said: "They have thrown the review panel under a bus." BBC Wales was told Labour decided to back the opposition motion after a deadline for the Welsh government to submit its own amendment had been missed, and it was decided to let the criticism go. However, others said the decision reflected broader views in the group and among several backbenchers. Mike Hedges said: "The review was rushed and accepted without public discussion. That was wrong and that has now been accepted and needs to be rectified." All major road building projects in Wales scrapped Roads review ignored citizens, ex-minister says The expert review panel, led by transport consultant Lynn Sloman, assessed 59 road projects and made recommendations on which projects to proceed with, which to abandon and which to reconsider in a different form. Of these, 15 will go ahead, but all the rest have been rejected or will be substantially revised. The building projects were scrapped over climate change concerns. What happened? On Wednesday, the Conservatives tabled a motion which said the Senedd "regrets the lack of engagement by the roads review panel with the public, elected representatives, local authorities, businesses and the third sector and others during the course of the review". Labour supported a Plaid Cymru amendment to that motion that left in the text on the lack of engagement. The amended motion - which is not binding on the government - then passed, 53 votes for, with Labour First Minister Mark Drakeford among the backers. It was opposed by Welsh Liberal Democrat Jane Dodds. In the debate, Climate Change Minister Julie James insisted the roads review, was "not a ban on road building". "This is a technical policy exercise," she added, "and not something any government would consult on directly." "The change in approach is undoubtedly the right thing to do but to be effective we need to make the right thing to do the easiest thing to do." After the debate, a Welsh government spokesperson said: "The time to engage the public and stakeholders is as we develop strategy and individual schemes. "The North Wales Transport Commission is consulting with key stakeholders in developing transport plans for North Wales. "Corporate joint committees are under a duty to produce their new regional transport plans, and in doing so will bring together views of people right across Wales." Welsh Conservative Shadow Transport Minister, Natasha Asghar, who led the debate, said: "By voting for our motion in the Senedd today, Labour have admitted that their road review was flawed. "The Labour Party, here in Wales, have been intent on slowing Wales down with their anti-road, anti-motorist agenda." Plaid Cymru's Transport spokesperson, Delyth Jewell, said: "In supporting our motion, the Welsh government agreed that better engagement was needed with communities on the roads review - and what's more, they also agreed with Plaid Cymru's calls for the need for bold and radical action in the transport sector to help reach net-zero emissions before 2050. "It was welcome to hear a change of tone this week - there were more positive noises in the Senedd about funding for bus services. This must now be firmed up so that we don't cut off communities, and that we take everyone on the net zero journey that we must embark on." link: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-politics-64896796

A great white shark recently decapitated a Mexican fisher as he was diving for shellfish. But what was the reason for the unusually gruesome attack? A fisher was recently decapitated by a 19-foot-long (5.8 meters) great white shark while diving for ax tripe, a scallop-like mollusk in Mexico. The tragic event made headlines because of the unusual nature of the attack. Manuel Nieblas López, who was in his 50s, was attacked Jan. 5 in Tobari Bay along the Gulf of California off Mexico. At the time of the attack, López was collecting the shellfish at a depth of between 36 and 59 feet (11 and 18 m) using a surface-supplied air source — a scuba-like apparatus that connects the diver to a compressed air source on a boat through a series of pipes, according to Trackingsharks.com(opens in new tab), a website that records all global shark attacks. Two other fishermen, who were on a support boat when the attack happened, witnessed the shark "impressively ripping off his head and biting both shoulders," said Jose Bernal, who spoke for the surviving fishers, according to Trackingsharks.com. Sharks rarely bite people. When they do, they typically grab the legs or torso after mistaking the person for prey, such as a seal, then release the victim after realizing the mistake. But a shark biting a person's head or shoulders is extremely rare, experts told Live Science. This type of attack is so rare that Greg Skomal(opens in new tab), a marine biologist at the University of Boston and head of the shark program at Massachusetts Marine Fisheries, has never heard of it occurring. "As rare as shark bites on humans can be, decapitation is even more rare," added Chris Lowe(opens in new tab), the director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach. So what could have caused this unusual type of attack? Related: Grisly new footage shows orcas attacking a great white shark and eating its liver As with almost all shark attacks, "mistaken identity" is likely the main reason why the shark attacked López, the experts said. "If sharks are excited and hungry, they make rash decisions and bite what — in the heat of the moment — they consider a potential prey item," said Gavin Naylor(opens in new tab), a marine biologist at the University of Florida who runs the International Shark Attack Files (ISAF) at the Florida Museum of Natural History. "Remember that predators have to think quickly," he added, and if they hesitate it "can leave them hungry." Sharks don't have great vision, which makes it hard for them to distinguish between prey and humans. Because of this, around 60% of shark attacks recorded by the ISAF occurred in murky waters with reduced visibility, Naylor said. (There is no mention of the water quality in any reports of the most recent attack, so it is not possible to know for sure if this played a role.) The Sun(opens in new tab) reported that López may have avoided the attack if he had been wearing a brightly colored wetsuit to help him stand out from seals, which had been advised by local authorities. But the experts are unconvinced by these claims. "It is a difficult hypothesis to test," Skomal said. "Since most wetsuits are black or darkly colored there is no way to tell statistically whether there is a trend there or not," Lowe added. However, the diver's fishing activity likely played a role in misleading the shark into thinking he was a prey animal, the experts said. The smell of the shellfish concentrated around the diver "could have lured the shark to the area," Lowe said. "Any time someone is fishing — whether for fishes or invertebrates like scallops or lobster — sharks are drawn to the smells in the water and the vibrations of struggling animals," Naylor added. "It is also possible that [due to his position on the seafloor] he resembled a sea lion foraging," Skomal said. Fishers like López had been warned to avoid fishing in the area due to an increase in shark activity during December and January, when pregnant female sharks enter the area, Newsweek(opens in new tab) reported. In December 218, another fisher was killed after being attacked by a great white shark shortly after jumping in the water, according to Trackingsharks.com. Related: Spiraling vortex of 60 sharks rips apart a dead humpback whale in mesmerizing new video López's position on the seafloor may explain why the shark attacked his head and shoulders. "It was the most accessible part of the person's anatomy," Naylor said. Most scallopers essentially "walk along the bottom" so the shark could not have approached the victim from underneath and approaching from the side would have likely left the shark open to a potential counterattack from its prey, he added. Lowe agreed that "the person's orientation in the water relative to that of the shark" plays a key role in where they are bitten. It is also possible that the shark deliberately went for the head "to quickly incapacitate the perceived prey," which has been suggested by some shark attacks on seals, Skomal said. However, it is hard to say what happened in this case with any certainty. "In most cases, we just don't know" why a shark attacks someone, Lowe said. "As you can imagine, it is very difficult to discern the motivation of the shark without detailed information of the situation prior to the bite." link: https://www.livescience.com/in-rare-attack-great-white-shark-decapitates-diver-in-mexico-but-why

Meyer Shank Racing mani[CENSORED]ted the Acura ARX-06's tire-pressure data during the race. A fine was levied and the team lost points, but the win still stands. After winning the prestigious 24 Hours of Daytona in January, Meyer Shank Racing is being penalized for mani[CENSORED]ting tire-pressure data sent to IMSA during the race. The team is losing 200 points in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, owner Mike Shank has been put on probation, and one engineer has been suspended indefinitely. However, the team remains the official winner of the race and will be allowed to keep the trophy, with the drivers holding onto the Rolex prize watches. When the green flag flew for the final restart with 27 minutes left in the 2023 24 Hours of Daytona, the No. 60 Meyer Shank Racing Acura ARX-06 streaked ahead, cruising to victory by just over four seconds. But now the team is coming under fire, with IMSA dishing out substantial penalties after Meyer Shank Racing was found to have mani[CENSORED]ted tire-pressure data during the race. After the race, Honda Performance Development (HPD)—which works closely with teams that run the top-class Acura GTP race cars—noticed discrepancies in the No. 60's data and launched an investigation. They discovered that Meyer Shank Racing had made “intentional software offsets” in the tire pressures that were reported by the monitoring system—basically, the team was artificially inflating the tire pressure data, so the numbers sent to IMSA were higher than the pressures they were actually running. This allowed Meyer Shank Racing to run its pressures below the prescribed minimums set by Michelin, which provides the tires for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, which could help improve traction under acceleration or in corners. As a result of HPD's discovery, the team and the drivers of the No. 60—Tom Blomqvist, Colin Braun, Helio Castroneves and Simon Pagenaud—were stripped of 200 of the 350 points earned in the race towards the full-season WeatherTech Championship. They also lost all points that go towards the Michelin Endurance Cup, which includes all races that are at least six hours long. The team and drivers are also being fined $50,000 and will have to return the prize money from winning the 24 Hours of Daytona. Team owner Mike Shank is now on probation through June 30, while engineer Ryan McCarthy is on indefinite suspension and has lost his IMSA credential. However, the official race results stand, meaning the No. 60 is still the winner, with the team getting to keep the trophy and the four drivers retaining the Rolex watches that are given out as prizes. In a statement, Meyer Shank Racing said "We accept the series' decision and have taken responsibility." The team also stated that "the team member that was responsible is no longer with the organization" and that they "do not want this error to overshadow the tremendous effort that our team, drivers and all of our partners have put for to develop this new LMDh car." This suggests that McCarthy acted alone in mani[CENSORED]ting the data, and that it was not a concerted effort from the team as a whole to break the rules in an attempt to win the race. HPD said in a statement from president David Salters, "We are extremely disappointed in the misconduct of the Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) team" and to have the two-year development of the ARX-06 "put into question is unacceptable."
