The teaser showing off the front lighting design and the darkened silhouette gives us our latest look at the upcoming EV9 electric SUV. Kia released two teaser images and two videos of the upcoming EV9 SUV. The images leave plenty to the imagination and don't give away much more than a glimpse of the front lighting scheme and a darkened silhouette. Despite being quite brief, the videos show off much more of the SUV and give a look at a playful animation of the headlights waking up, as well as a rear shot of the taillights. Like every other automaker, Kia is preparing for a future filled with electric vehicles. Next up in Kia's battery-powered lineup is the EV9 electric SUV, and the manufacturer has just released two new teaser images and two new teaser videos ahead of the model's debut later this month. The images leave a lot to the imagination, but confirm what previous spy shots lead us to believe. One video displays what looks to be a playful startup sequence from the headlights, with the numerous pixelated lights coming to life before the taller LEDs on the outside edge of the fascia light up. The other video shows door handles flattened against the body of the car, likely to aid in aero to boost EV range. Kia confirmed it will reveal more of the interior and exterior of the car in the coming weeks, with final production info for the car coming out by the end of the month. Kia claims 300 miles of driving range for the EV9 and says the SUV will also be able to charge on 350-kilowatt fast-charging stations. We don't quite know yet what size battery pack(s) will be offered, but the EV9 will utilize the brand's E-GMP platform, which also underpins the current EV6. A survey sent to current Telluride owners appears to hold some clues as to the EV9 specs. It suggested that pricing for the base version might start around $56,000, with higher trims coming in closer to $75,000. It also suggested range for the EV9 will be between 220 and 290 miles, while powertrain output will go from 200 horses in the base model to 400 ponies in the top trim. link: https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a43160097/kia-ev9-silhouette-teaser/

You shouldn’t treat this like an ordinary parenting dispute, writes advice columnist Eleanor Gordon-Smith. This one involves lives and laws My husband and I have three children, aged four years, three years and four months. A recurring source of parenting conflict has been our differing stances on safety. Basically my husband has almost no regard for our children’s safety, while I would say I am pretty middle of the road. It’s a weekly battle between us. For example, he refused to buckle up our children in their car seats ‘because it makes them upset’, despite me saying it’s unsafe. When I asked him to put helmets on our children when they’re in the bike trailer – he refused. When we argue about this, he tells me I am being ‘hysterical’ and that I should respect his parenting decisions. I can’t seem to get him to see that this isn’t a matter of me being crazy – it’s actually the law, and every other parent we know agrees with me. He has always been a risk-taker, and has come out largely unscathed in all his adventures. His parents were very hands-off with him and his siblings, so perhaps that is part of it. How do I get him to accept that recommended safety measures are there for a reason, before someone gets hurt? I am sick of having to argue for basic safety for our children. Eleanor says: How are you supposed to change someone’s mind when words don’t work? It sounds like you’re dealing with a particularly frightening version of the problem of how to reach someone once conversation has run out. If this were any other conflict, you might just do what you need to anyway, without changing his mind. But this isn’t like that: if the kids aren’t wearing helmets or seatbelts when they’re with him, that’s not something you can fix unilaterally. It sounds, unfortunately, like you’ll need to change his mind. So what works, when conversation doesn’t? For risk-insensitivity, it can help when people actually see or hear what it would be like if the bad outcome eventuated. When car accidents or head injuries exist only in imagination, it’s easy to sanitise the details (“We’ll just go to the doctor”). And when they’re only in imagination, they can feel just that: imaginary, fictional. Once you’ve seen a bad accident or heard a child in real pain, it’s a lot harder to feel like that stuff never happens, or wouldn’t matter if it did. It’s like how you can know perfectly well that smoking puts tar in your heart, but seeing it on TV still changes something. Seeing does something that knowing doesn’t. Sign up for our rundown of must-reads, pop culture and tips for the weekend, every Saturday morning Obviously you don’t want there to be injured kids that your husband can see – but maybe you could ask for help from people who have seen these things? Are there nurses, doctors or paramedics in your circle who could tell your husband what infant head injuries actually involve? A long time ago I stopped accepting rides on motorcycles after a doctor told me the details of just one accident. Sometimes when perception doesn’t work, sanction does. You don’t need him to agree that his philosophy on risk is wrong; you just need him to agree to put the helmets on the heads. Sometimes people change behaviour only when it gets too expensive not to. Is there a way to insist that the fines are too financially risky, or it’s, too upsetting for the kids if Dad gets in trouble with the police? If the probability of an accident is too low to move him, maybe the higher likelihood of fines could work. Or perhaps the sanction you reach for could be relational. The risks he’s taking don’t just affect him – they affect the kids, and importantly, you. An accident would change your life, financially, materially, emotionally. He’s deciding he has the authority to take that risk with your life, even though you’ve said you don’t want him to. I think that gives you the authority to say “this will be a problem for our marriage if it continues”. It doesn’t need to be about who’s right or wrong; it can be about why he should have the authority to take risks on your behalf, risks you’ve said you don’t agree to. I can understand him not wanting to bubble wrap the kids. He might want to pass on his sense of adventurousness; his confidence that bad things can be endured, and it’s not worth missing out on life to avoid them. The trouble is that not wearing a seatbelt is neither safe nor especially fun. Maybe you could try to find ways he could give the kids the fun without the inordinate risk – like going to a climbing wall, indoor skydiving or other things that will feel fun to the kids in a safe(r) way. Whatever you do, it’s important this doesn’t get treated like any other parenting dispute: this one involves lives and laws. This letter has been edited for length. link: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/mar/03/how-do-i-get-my-husband-to-accept-basic-child-safety-measures-before-someone-gets-hurt

Angry exchanges over Russia's war in Ukraine have dominated G20 talks, with hosts India saying the disagreements mean there will be no joint statement. The US secretary of state said the meeting had been marred by Russia's "unprovoked and unjustified war". Russia's foreign minister accused the West of "blackmail and threats". India had wanted to focus on other issues affecting developing nations, but it said the differences over Ukraine "could not be reconciled". "We tried, but the gap between the countries was too much," India's foreign minister S Jaishankar said. The G20, which includes the world's 19 wealthiest nations plus the European Union, accounts for 85% of global economic output and two-thirds of its po[CENSORED]tion. The group's foreign ministers - including Russia's Sergei Lavrov, Antony Blinken of the US and China's Qin Gang - were meeting in Delhi under India's presidency. It was the first face-to-face meeting of the top US and Russian diplomats since the war began, just over a year ago. Blinken and Lavrov meet for first time since invasion Mr Blinken met Mr Lavrov for about 10 minutes on the sidelines and told him the West would stand by Ukraine "for as long as it takes", a senior state department official said. Mr Blinken also pressed Russia to rejoin the New Start nuclear arms control treaty that it recently withdrew from and abide by the terms. Russian officials denied any negotiations had taken place. Earlier, Russia also accused the West of "burying" a deal to allow some Ukrainian grain exports - but the US countered by saying Moscow was hampering Ukrainian exports. Meanwhile Russian officials said Moscow and Beijing had agreed to oppose what they called Western blackmail and threats - but this hasn't been confirmed by China. "We speak about manners. Well, our Western counterparts have gotten really bad with these," Mr Lavrov said after Thursday's talks. "They are not thinking of diplomacy any more; they now only deal in blackmail and threatening everyone else." Ukraine war casts shadow over India's G20 ambitions Why India is not criticising Russia over Ukraine Indian PM Narendra Modi had opened the session, warning that global divisions were putting sustainable development at risk. "Many developing countries are struggling with unsustainable debts while trying to ensure food and energy security," he said. "They are also most affected by global warming caused by richer countries." It was a rare address by Mr Modi in English - a sign of how seriously he wanted his message to be taken. He made no direct reference to the war in Ukraine but acknowledged that discussions would be affected by geopolitical tensions. Thursday's schedule included sessions on food security, development co-operation, terrorism and humanitarian assistance - a reflection of India's priorities while it holds the G20 presidency. Before the talks a former Indian diplomat told the BBC India would have to "do something special" to make delegates overlook their differences on the war. Strained relations between the US and China, which has refused to oppose Russia's invasion, were also expected to test India's ability to forge a consensus. In the end Foreign Minister Jaishankar had to present what's called a chair's summary after Thursday's talks, meaning participants had been unable to reach a joint statement. Russia and China were the only states which refused to agree to condemn the war. But India did succeed in its main objective of raising a voice for the Global South and Mr Jaishankar said that "on the bulk of issues we were able to get an outcome document". There are still several months left for diplomacy before G20 leaders meet in September and Delhi will hope it its presidency doesn't end on a disappointing note. Experts say Delhi also had the delicate task of balancing its non-aligned policy on the war with pleas to other nations to find ways to work together. India has resisted pressure and continued with its strategy of not directly criticising Russia, which is India's largest supplier of arms. It has regularly abstained from voting on UN resolutions condemning the war in Ukraine, including a vote held at the UN General Assembly last week. It has also defended its decision to increase its oil imports from Russia, saying it has to look after the needs of its po[CENSORED]tion. But it has talked about the importance of "the UN Charter, international law, and respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states" in its past statements on Ukraine. link: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-64796718

There have been mounting concerns over imports of Russian energy products, with many accusing companies in Morocco of engaging in the “mani[CENSORED]tion of market prices.” Spokesperson of Morocco’s government Mustapha Baitas has responded to concerns over Russian energy imports amid reports of “mani[CENSORED]tion” of market prices. In a press conference following the government council on Thursday, Baitas said that import of Russian gas before and with the current government has always been within the range of 10% of total imports. “Import of Russian gas was in the range of 9% in 2020 and did not exceed 5% in 2021,” he said. Russia’s gas exports to Morocco remained within the limits of 9% last year, Baitas argued, stressing that Morocco has been putting all efforts into importing Russian coal, whose “import contributed to controlling” the country’s electricity bill. Commenting on energy prices, Baitas said that the average price of gas since the beginning of the current “is characterized by convergence from various sources, because it is subject to the logic of supply and demand.” Baitas’s remarks come after a report from the Wall Street Journal drew attention to growing demand for Russian oil in North Africa, including in Morocco. Read Also: Concerns Over Russian Oil Being Mixed, Re-Exported to Europe from North Africa Morocco’s imports of Russian diesel increased to reach 2 million barrels as of January compared to 600,000 barrels in 2021, the Journal wrote, detailing that Russia would be sending at least 1.2 million barrels in February 2023. The report also echoed concerns over Russian oil cargoes “being blended” with other oil products and re-exported to Europe amid Western sanctions on Russian oil over the Ukraine war. “That prowess disguises the ultimate origin of the products and complicates Western efforts to remove Russian fossil fuels from their economies,” the journal wrote. The concerns were exacerbated after a Moroccan MP accused energy companies in the country of mani[CENSORED]ting the origins of the products being sold on the Moroccan fuel market. Abdelkader Taher, a member of the Socialist Union of Po[CENSORED]r Forces (USF), addressed a question to the Ministry of Economy on February 17, to call on the government to open an investigation into what he called “mani[CENSORED]tion” of the oil market. Taher said that some companies that import Russian oil – which is 70% cheaper than other international energy products – are involved in fraud as they change import documentation, including receipts, to pass their products off as imported from Gulf countries or the US. Energy companies have been resorting to this fraudulent change of their products’ origin countries to make enormous profits off crisis-hit Moroccan consumers, the MP fumed, urging the government to intervene to put an end to this trend. link: https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2023/03/354281/morocco-responds-to-concerns-about-russian-energy-imports

These rules aim to slash the after-effects of any crypto slumps. Dubai has been taking several pro-crypto steps to establish itself as a crypto hub. The city has now released a set of new regulations that would be mandated to be adhered to by crypto firms looking to operate from Dubai. Four rulebooks have been prepared for crypto service providers, detailing the regulations. In addition, several other rulebooks have been compiled outlining the laws around activity-based services around the crypto sector. These rules aim to slash the after-effects of any crypto slumps. Dubai has now imposed an application charge of $27,000 (roughly Rs. 22 lakh) for crypto firms seeking operational permissions, CoinDesk said in its report. The Emirate has also decided to levy an annual supervision fee of around $55,000 (roughly Rs. 45 lakh) that crypto firms will have to cover if they wish to bag a licence in Dubai. In case the approval-seeking crypto firm intends to bring services like custody, lending or payments around crypto, they will be required to apply for additional documentation. By choosing to expand their array of services, crypto firms could avail a 50 percent discount on the application fees. Binance and Hex Trust, an institutional crypto custody provider, have bagged operational approvals in Dubai. Last year, Dubai created a special regulatory unit called the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) to oversee crypto-related businesses there. While regions of the UAE, like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, are working on attracting crypto firms to set offices there, the nation overall is accelerating its efforts to bring out its CBDC. As part of its Financial Infrastructure Transformation Programme (FIT), the financial authorities of the UAE have begun working on developing the required technical and cyber security support for its blockchain-based e-currency. link: https://www.gadgets360.com/cryptocurrency/news/dubai-officiates-set-of-rulebooks-crypto-firms-prepares-web3-hotspot-3829304

The first sales figures of AMD's Ryzen 7000 X3D CPUs are in and it looks like the Ryzen 9 7900X3D is selling quite well while the 7950X3D remains out of stock. AMD Ryzen 9 7900X3D CPU Sales Strong At Launch, Ryzen 9 7950X3D CPU's Reception Mixed But Sold Out At Major Outlets In numbers compiled by TechEpiphany, we can see the sales figures of the AMD Ryzen 7000 X3D CPUs at the retailer, Mindfactory. The numbers show the launch day figures and it looks like AMD Ryzen 9 7900X3D CPUs were quite po[CENSORED]r. The retailer was able to sell 360 units which might be seen as lower than the Ryzen 7 5800X3D (490 units sold) and Ryzen 7 5800X (400 units sold) but at the same time, the chip sold much better than its non-3D brother, the Ryzen 9 7900X which only managed to sell 230 units during its launch week. This shows that the AMD Ryzen 9 7900X3D CPU sold more than 50% better than the 7900X and as of right now, the sales were 3.6x higher versus the 7900X despite the former being lower down to $449 US versus the $599 US cost of the 3D V-Cache part. The AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D was nowhere to be seen in the list but it is mentioned that there's far less stock of the flagship compared to the Ryzen 9 7900X3D which is available plenty. It looks like the AMD Ryzen 9 7900X3D provides a balanced application and gaming performance at its price point which is about on par with the Intel Core i9-13900K. But the real game changer in the 3D V-Cache lineup is yet to launch. Most gamers are waiting for the Ryzen 7 7800X3D which is also evident by our own poll which shows more than 50% of our readers likely to purchase it. The Ryzen 9 7950X3D was in the second spot in our poll but that was before the reviews came in and it looks like most readers changed their minds and went for the 7900X3D. The other possibility of the lower AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D CPU could just be the lower supply which can be seen across major US/UK/EU retailers. The flagship is mostly out of stock and Newegg had the following to say about the supplies at launch: The Ryzen 9 7950X3D sold out earlier this morning, but will be replenished as soon as possible. via Newegg But it looks like the stock hasn't been replenished. In fact, even the Ryzen 9 7900X3D is now being sold at a much higher price of $794 US at the retailer which is 33% higher than its MSRP. We would like gamers to wait for the Ryzen 7 7800X3D as it would be the best deal for them. The chip might also potentially push AM5 sales higher and be as big of a hit as the Ryzen 7 5800X3D has been so far. Which AMD Ryzen 7000 X3D CPU are you most likely to buy? AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D ($699 US) AMD Ryzen 9 7900X3D ($599 US) AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D ($449 US) link: https://wccftech.com/amd-ryzen-9-7900x3d-sold-more-than-50-percent-better-7900x-did-at-launch-7950x3d-cpu-mostly-out-of-stock/

Always three, there are Stig Asmussen, director of upcoming third-person action romp Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, has hinted at plans for a third game. In a recent interview, the Star Wars Jedi: Survivor director said that he’s “always wanted to see [the series] as a trilogy.” Clarifying his team’s approach to Survivor’s plot, he continued: “We had a pretty decent idea of timeframe where we wanted Survivor to take place, what the stakes were going to be, what the tone of the game was going to be, what Cal was going to be up against, and how the crew was going to factor into that. And there's ideas of what we could do beyond that as well” (via IGN). Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is scheduled to release April 28 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC and marks the next chapter in the story of Cal Kestis. Between lightsaber duels and dishing out force-enabled beatings, Cal will have to come to terms with the broken legacy of the Jedi Order as he navigates the Empire’s oppressive galactic regime. Asmussen has a history of optimism when it comes to the series. Even before the release of the original Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order in 2019, developer Respawn Entertainment was discussing the possibility of a sequel. “We were already talking about a second game… frankly, we were talking beyond. And these are conversations that, when we’re breaking this story with Lucasfilm, it’s like: ‘well, where are we going with the second game?’.” Though no concrete details have emerged as to what the series’ third act might look like, it is promising to know that Respawn has been looking ahead with the Star Wars: Jedi series ever since the early days. It suggests that we may well be in for a coherent three-part story – in stark contrast to some Star Wars trilogies I might name. I have a good feeling about this Judging from trailers and gameplay footage, Jedi: Survivor already looks the part of a trilogy’s dark second act. Everything from Cal’s more grizzled appearance to the more sinister tone has caused me to draw parallels between the game and The Empire Strikes Back, the gritty middle of the original trilogy of Star Wars movies. The Star Wars: Jedi series is certainly among the more interesting and thoughtful Star Wars projects out there at time of writing. Much to my delight, it’s set between Emperor Palpatine’s rise to power and the events of the original movie trilogy, much like fan-favorite series Andor. I thoroughly enjoyed Fallen Order’s unflinching look at this dark era in Star Wars history. Cal regularly had to contend with the authoritarian jackboot of the Empire, fending off Stormtroopers and dealing with Darth Vader’s Inquisitors – tortured practitioners of dark force powers hell-bent on slaughtering every last Jedi. Now that Cal has come into his own as a character, I’m very excited to see what Respawn does in this new narrative space. Hopefully, Asmussen will be able to realize his vision for a trilogy and treat us all to more gritty Star Wars goodness. link: https://www.techradar.com/news/star-wars-jedi-survivor-director-wants-a-full-on-trilogy

Learn about the best talents and team comps for Dehya in Genshin Impact. Dehya is a 5-star Pyro character added as part of Genshin Impact's version 3.5 update. While she's been part of your journey for quite some time due to her appearances in various quests, you'll now have a shot at getting her to join your roster. Of course, you might want to consider just what she brings to the table. Here's our guide to help you with the best talents and team comps for Dehya in Genshin Impact. Genshin Impact - Dehya's talent priorities Elemental Burst: Leonine Bite (top priority) - Becomes resistant to interruption and unable to use all other abilities; you may only do a flurry of punches, followed by a diving attack. All of these hits deal Pyro damage, and scale off her ATK and max HP stats. Lastly, Dehya will create another Molten Inferno (elemental skill aura) at the end of this sequence. This is considered the best talent priority for Dehya in Genshin Impact, as this is where most of her DPS will come from. Elemental Skill: Molten Inferno (next priority) - Creates an area-of-effect aura, with a second charge that can be used afterward, causing a diving attack. Enemies that take damage within this field will trigger a coordinated Pyro AoE attack based on Dehya's ATK and max HP (can occur once every 2.5 seconds). Additionally, other characters within the field become resistant to interruption, and a portion of the damage they take will instead be funneled onto Dehya, who'll lose a bit of HP in their stead. Normal Attack: Sandstorm Assault (ignore) - This just increases the damage of Dehya's normal, charged, and plunging attacks. Passives: Unstinting Succor - After recasting the Molten Inferno aura, Dehya will take 60% less damage from the funneling/mitigation mechanic. Also, after casting her skill, all party members become even more resistant to interruption while they're within the AoE field. Stalwart and True - When Dehya's HP is below 40%, she'll recover 20% of her max HP and an additional 6% every two seconds for the next 10 seconds. The Sunlit Way - +10% movement speed for all party members during the day (0600 to 1800); only works on the overworld map, not in domains/Spiral Abyss. Dehya's best team comps When talking about the best team comps for Dehya in Genshin Impact, we'll have to consider her role in your squad, as well as her overall kit. The thing is, Dehya is underwhelming: she doesn't do a lot of DPS, and her HP-to-damage scaling is subpar. Worse, HP-focused characters, such as Zhongli and Kokomi, fulfill their respective niche roles more effectively, whereas it's hard to pinpoint what Dehya should be. Regardless, if you do want to pull for her via her wish banner, then here are our suggestions: Vaporize or Melt comps - These setups will require either a couple of Hydro characters (i.e., Mona, Xingqiu, Yelan, Ayato, or Kokomi), or a couple of Cryo characters (i.e., Ayaka, Ganyu, or Diona). The last slot can be an Anemo character for Swirls (i.e., Kazuha or Venti). Mono Pyro comps - This team has Pyro support or sub-DPS characters for the most part (i.e., Bennett and Xiangling), as well as an Anemo (i.e., Kazuha or Venti). Burgeon comps - Burgeon requires Dendro to react with Hydro, forming a bloom, which will then explode via a Pyro ability. Your ideal pick for a Dendro character should be Nahida (if you have her) or the Dendro Traveler (as the next best option). For Hydro, Xingqiu is the top option due to his sub/off-field DPS capabilities. The last slot can be Bennett for the extra damage buff and healing. In any case, if you'd like to get the most out of Dehya in Genshin Impact, you can visit our other guides for her best weapons and best artifacts. link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/genshin-impact-dehya-best-talents-team-comps-guide/1100-6511921/

Please god let it star Agent 47 disguised as an elf. With Hitman's freelancer mode in the rear-view mirror and an upcoming James Bond game(opens in new tab) boiling away somewhere behind the scenes, IO Interactive has revealed yet another project. The Danish studio has announced in a recent post to its website(opens in new tab) it's working on the straightforwardly-titled "Project Fantasy," an online fantasy RPG. I was curious about what the "online" part of online fantasy RPG meant—after all, you could plausibly describe Hitman as an online game even though it's single-player—but IOI makes it sound familiar. The studio says it's "building a new world, a new IP [...] a world and a game built from the core to entertain players and expand for many years to come," and pays particular homage to tabletop gaming and the idea of "a diverse group of individuals with different skills and strengths" working together and becoming "more than the sum of their parts". That certainly sounds a lot like a pitch for a live-service game to me! That's… pretty much your lot as far as announced detail goes, although we can tell from the artwork at the top of the page that we're sure as heck gonna see some willowy elf-folk and wide, squat dwarven lads. Even the job postings associated with Project Fantasy on IOI's site don't reveal much. The posting for a senior product manager promises that the game will "revolutionize the online fantasy RPG genre," while the post calling for a senior combat designer reveals that the game will, in fact, have combat. That's as close to a revelation as we get, folks. So don't get too excited just yet: This one seems like it's in the earliest of early stages. So early, in fact, that its announcement post was a call for job applications more than a proper reveal. The Meet the Team section on the page has a bunch of interviews(opens in new tab) with people working on the project, but they're more keen on chatting about things like work-life balance rather than the game they're working on. It does sound quite nice in Copenhagen, though. Maybe senior combat designer is my calling. Whatever Project Fantasy ends up being, I'm excited to see it. I have fallen head over heels for Hitman's freelancer mode in the last couple of weeks, dedicating an embarrassing amount of my free time to screwing up assassinations spectacularly in a range of exotic locations around the globe. Passengers could see reduced services or routes scrapped altogether once pandemic-era funding ends in the summer, the bus industry has said. The Bus Emergency Scheme (BES) is set to end in June. With fewer people now using buses than in 2019, one industry boss warned of a "cliff edge" with some smaller firms having to leave the market altogether. A government minister said he was working with the industry to see which services are important. Bus firms in Wales, Scotland and England were provided with subsidies to keep routes on the road after passenger numbers collapsed at the start of the pandemic. But despite Covid restrictions having long since eased, bus companies say passenger numbers have not recovered - with older customers in particular not fully returning to services. The Welsh government recently extended the scheme into the new financial year, but only for three months. Welsh Deputy Climate Change Minister Lee Waters recently told the Senedd that the extension would give the industry a reprieve to work out which routes to keep. But he argued the Welsh government could not afford to continue the scheme, and said that he hoped there could be a "skeleton service" after the scheme ends. Bus firms also get grants from councils and receive money when holders of concessionary bus passes use their routes. The most recent official figures show that passenger journeys were down 43% in Wales in 2021/22 compared to 2019/20. How a city's bus service was quietly cut in half More cuts to bus services to come, operators warn Warning hundreds of England bus services face cuts Mel Evans is managing director of Mid Wales Travel in Aberystwyth, which runs six bus routes on a commercial basis and three others subsidised by Ceredigion council. Mr Evans said the commercial services are "in danger" - and some of them could be scrapped. "We've already had to cut some of them back to every two hours instead of every hour, just so that we know that we can save them and keep them going," he said. Mr Evans said the BES has been a "lifeline". He said the company's passenger numbers remain 50% down on what they were before the pandemic. Older people, he said, have not returned to buses. "Mrs Jones would, for example, go into town on a Monday and get a bit of shopping. On Wednesday she would go and have her hair done, Friday again do a bit of shopping. "Through Covid she found out she could have her food and shopping delivered on a Monday and Friday. The hairdresser now comes to her house and when she meets her friends they meet in somebody's house. That's four journeys lost." Richard Thomas is head of operations with Edwards Coaches, which operates three public service routes in the Rhondda Cynon Taf area. One of the three - the 90 from Gwaunmiskin to Pontypridd - would likely be scrapped in its current form once the BES ends. "We're working closely to try to keep some of those services going beyond June, if we can merge them with the 100 service, which is similar that operates via the main road. "But on its own the 90 service just doesn't stand up," he said. Other services the company runs could see a reduced frequency, he explained. He is hoping that a scheme by Rhondda Cynon Taf council for free travel in March may encourage people back, making cuts unnecessary. But he said if passenger numbers remain the same as they are now "then we would definitely need some form of support to carry on running". Passengers on the number 90 say it's a "vital" service for them to get into Pontypridd. Many use their bus passes and say it's their main way of getting about. Susan Rice-Bevan, 62, from Llantwit Fardre, hops on two or three times a week. "It is quite a trek up to the main road to use another service which a lot of elderly people in the community find quite difficult," she said. If it were lost "it would isolate a lot of people who can't get out to do their shopping, who perhaps haven't got the facilities to do online shopping". John Wornham, 92, from Church Village said: "It's essential to me to get to the village because the only way I can get up the hill is on the bus. "Once a week I go to Ponty on a Wednesday to do my shopping in the market." Marge Jones, 70, from Tonteg was taking her husband Derryck, 72, to a medical appointment. "It's a lifesaver," she said. "We rely on this." line The chief executive of a bus industry body that represents 50 members said 15-20% of the bus network might be lost once the funding ends. Graham Vidler, of the Confederation of Passenger Transport, said while larger firms might be able to downsize and adjust, there would be more severe consequences in rural areas and "in areas which are particularly dependent on people travelling on their free bus passes". Small and medium firms could face leaving the market altogether, he said. Mr Vidler estimated that while fare paying passenger figures are down 10% on the start of the pandemic, bus pass passenger figures are down 35%. "We will see some communities, particularly in rural West Wales, cut off from the bus network altogether", he warned. He said larger firms would also need to reduce services which could mean reduced frequencies, fewer services at weekends, later starting times and earlier finishing times. "If you suddenly take that scheme away you get that cliff edge effect where all of a sudden a large proportion of the network suddenly becomes unviable". He argued that more of the £60m cash earmarked for concessionary fare subsidy in the budget should reach bus firms. Lee Waters, speaking at the Senedd climate change committee on Wednesday morning, said the government was hoping that "in exchange for a certain amount of money... we are able to reach agreement on which services are more important than others". He said the Welsh government faces a "very difficult dilemma that the privatised bus industry has only been able to survive through public subsidy during Covid". "Passenger numbers have not recovered, the farebox has not recovered." "The reality is, we're going to have to face changes," he said. "Energy spent on trying to say we should keep things as they are is not well spent energy, because we can't keep things as they are." But he said he did not know what a core service meant, saying it was hard for bus firms to forecast. Coach and Bus Operators Cymru (CaBAC), which represents smaller firms, also warned that a reduction in fleet sizes could lead to fewer drivers and vehicles available for home to school transport. "The knock-on effect would be widely felt - not only would local bus services be decimated with people unable to travel for employment, shopping, hospital and other important appointments," it said. The Welsh government said it has provided "£48m in emergency funding to the bus industry this financial year and approximately £150m since the beginning of the pandemic". "When we confirmed an initial three month extension of funding earlier this month, we made clear that we need to start to transition away from this emergency style of funding," a spokesman said. He said plans for franchising, where private firms would have to bid to run services, "is a key step towards introducing legal powers to deliver a new model for running buses in Wales". "This is a chance for us to deliver better connected services and we will continue to work closely with local authorities, operators and other partners - including Transport for Wales - to build a strong and sustainable bus network for Wales," the spokesman added. link: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-politics-64798117

Most biologists will answer confidently when asked 'which came first, the chicken or the egg?" but the answer may depend on what type of egg you're talking about. You've heard the age-old riddle: "Which came first: the chicken or the egg?" Taken metaphorically, it's a meditation on the futility of determining the cause of a self-perpetuating cycle. Taken literally, it's a great question for evolutionary biologists. Chickens come from eggs, but eggs come from chickens. So which came first? Most biologists state unequivocally that the egg came first. At their most basic level, eggs are just female sex cells. Hard external eggs that can be laid on land (also known as amniotic eggs) were a game changer for vertebrates. "The egg is such an important step in [vertebrate] evolution, because it allowed amniotes to go further and further away from water," Koen Stein, a paleontologist at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, told Live Science. Prior to the dawn of hard-shelled eggs loaded with nutritious yolks, vertebrates had to rely on bodies of water to reproduce. Most amphibians still face this aquatic limitation — they need to keep their gelatinous eggs moist in order to survive. True birds didn't show up in the fossil record until the mid- to late Jurassic, around 165 million to 150 million years ago, according to research published in the journal Current Biology(opens in new tab). But scientists think the first shelled eggs evolved long before then — around 325 million years ago, according to the University of Texas at Austin's Biodiversity Center(opens in new tab). That means the egg came "well before the chicken," Stein said. These very first eggs were likely malleable and leathery in texture, much like the eggs laid by today's reptiles and platypuses. There were plenty of land-based vertebrates laying amniotic eggs in the Carboniferous, Permian and Triassic periods, but the most famous of these animals are the dinosaurs. Stein has studied some of the earliest known dinosaur eggshells, which come from the early Jurassic period, about 200 million years ago. These eggs had extremely thin outer shells, only about 100 microns thick. "That's the thickness of a human hair," Stein said. However, based on their structure, these early dinosaur eggs would have been rigid, like porcelain, rather than flexible, like a banana peel, making them the earliest known example of an egg as we know it today. That thinness probably explains why researchers have had trouble finding earlier examples of eggshells. When an egg encounters rich, acidic soil, it begins to slowly dissolve. "The soil would have made it impossible for such a thin calcareous layer to be preserved," Stein said. Another idea is that early dinosaur eggs were soft shelled, and so didn't preserve well in the fossil record, according to a 2020 study published in the journal Nature(opens in new tab). So the egg definitely predated the chicken. Case closed, right? Well, not quite. If we're talking about the first chicken egg, the story changes. Chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) likely evolved from a subspecies of red jungle fowl (Gallus gallus) around 50 million years ago. Humans living in Southeast Asia first domesticated these birds somewhere between 1650 B.C. and 1250 B.C., according to a 2022 research article published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences(opens in new tab). At some point during the domestication process, the last ancestor of modern chickens would have laid an egg containing an embryo with enough genetic differences to make it distinct from its parent species. This embryonic chicken would have developed in the not-quite-chicken egg before hatching. Then, after reaching adulthood, it would go on to lay the first proper chicken egg. In this way, the chicken could be said to predate the chicken egg. But evolutionary history isn't straightforward; there is evidence that chickens interbred with other subspecies of jungle fowl even after becoming their own genetically distinct subspecies. Some of these traits are more (or less) evident in certain modern chicken breeds. What's more, chicken domestication appears to have occurred independently multiple times in parts of India and Oceania over several thousand years, according to the University of Wisconsin-Madison(opens in new tab). So determining which chicken was the original can be tricky. Regardless of which came first, biologists and philosophers agree that chickens and eggs have something important in common: They're both delicious. link: https://www.livescience.com/which-came-first-the-chicken-or-the-egg

The company that makes the most reliable fast-chargers says it has already begun the process of opening 7500 of its chargers to outside brands by the end of 2024. Tesla will open a portion of its U.S. charging infrastructure to outside manufacturers for the first time. At least 7500 Tesla chargers will become available for non-Tesla EVs by the end of 2024, with roughly 3500 new and existing 250-kW Superchargers along highway corridors, and 4000 Level 2 chargers at destinations like hotels and restaurants. After years of maintaining a contained system, the switch will give Tesla access to a slice of $7.5 billion being released in federal charging infrastructure investment. UPDATE 03/01/2023: Tesla took to its official charging account on Twitter on February 2 to announce that select Superchargers have been equipped with CCS charging adapters and are open to use by other brands. Users will need to use the Tesla App to select the CCS adapter, and can monitor charging rate, total charge given, and total cost of charging in real time. Tesla did not announce how many chargers have been opened to other brands, though the app shows several locations in California, as well as Buffalo, N.Y., where the Superchargers are produced. One of the prevailing factors in Tesla's dominance in the EV segment has been the superiority, reliability, and sprawling coverage of its charging network. A portion of that network will become available for non-Tesla owners for the first time, according to a statement from the White House on Wednesday. Compared to the rest of the industry, Tesla's charging network is huge. According to data from the Department of Energy, Tesla Supercharger sites make up roughly 24 percent of all DC fast-charging sites in the U.S. Adittionally, with more than 17,000 fast-charge cables, Tesla has more than 61 percent of all available fast-chargers in the U.S. The company will now make at least 7500 chargers available for EVs outside of its native ecosystem. By the end of 2024 roughly 3500 new and existing 250 kW Superchargers along public highway corridors will be opened to non-Tesla EVs. On top of that, roughly 4000 public facing Level 2 chargers from Tesla will be placed at what the White House is naming "Destination Charging" locations at places like hotels and restaurants. Uncle Sam Steps In The move to allow out-of-network vehicles to utilize its network doesn't come from a miraculous change of Elon Musk's heart. The company needs to adopt CCS availability to earn a slice of $7.5 billion in federal charging infrastructure spending, which it would otherwise see none of. Similar to the sti[CENSORED]tions surrounding public funding of EV development, the White House is requiring that effective immediately, final assembly and all charging station–related manufacturing for such components as iron or steel charger enclosures or housing occur in the United States. Additionally, by July 2024, at least 55 percent of the cost of all components will need to be spent on products manufactured domestically. One White House official said at a briefing that as long as its chargers allow other vehicles to charge using CCS, Tesla will be eligible for a subsidy, including retrofitting the existing charging infrastructure, as reported by Reuters. Tesla has opened its Supercharging network to outside EVs before, just not here in the U.S. It launched a pilot program in the Netherlands in 2019, starting with 10 Supercharger locations. After years of the European Union talking about requiring all EV chargers to be compatible with all modern EVs, the company shifted from the proprietary charging port it uses in the States, and began selling vehicles with a CCS connector in Europe. More Ports More Problems? Tesla's network can be compared to the Apple ecosystem. The company controls nearly all the variables, and in turn, the system works in a plain and simple way. In addition to simply being less extensive, charging networks such as ChargePoint, Electrify America, and EVGo are subject to frequent issues with bandwidth and broken or inoperable chargers, according to user complaints. A 2022 survey by Plug In America reported that the most commonly reported issue by EV owners was broken or non-working chargers, though the Tesla Supercharger network scored "significantly better than its competitors on every metric." Opening the system to add CCS compatability in conjuction with the proprietary hardware and software could result in Tesla's charging network losing its reputation for reliable fast-charging. Guidehouse Insights analyst Sam Abuelsamid thinks so: "There is a strong likelihood that if they open the supercharger network to other vehicles, their current excellent reliability rate will decline significantly," Abuelsamid said, as quoted by Reuters. link: https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a42913649/tesla-opening-us-supercharger-network/

In these days of food shortages, you might assume lasagne, pizza and meatballs are off the menu. But with some simple substitutions you can still enjoy many favourite meals Acombination of high electricity prices and bad weather has led to salad items being rationed in supermarkets around Britain. Many shoppers at Asda, Morrisons, Tesco, Aldi and Lidl will have, in recent days, encountered empty green crates in the fresh produce aisle, or sales of broccoli and tomatoes capped at three a customer. The tomato shortage, in particular, has been a rude awakening, given that so many midweek no-recipe fallbacks use them. Here, then, are a dozen ideas for making versions of those meals when you can’t get hold of fresh, bottled or even tinned tomatoes and don’t want to reach for the puree or ketchup. 1. Red pasta sauce Anyone with an allergy to nightshade vegetables (which include tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, chillies and aubergines) will be familiar with nomato sauce. Recipes usually combine carrots, celery and butternut squash with beetroot. Depending on how much you like the earthy sweetness of beetroot, you can use anything from a single beet to a vac-pack of four little ones. Blitz the cooked or steamed veg with onion and garlic, sauteed in olive oil, balancing out the flavour with vinegar (red wine or balsamic) and sweetness (honey or sugar). Finally, season with salt and pepper to taste and add finely chopped fresh herbs. Roasting tomatoes is always a good way to start a rich sauce – and so with carrots. Slow-roast a bunch in butter and olive oil, as the Swedish chef Simon Bajada does for a beautiful soup he serves with fresh cheese and black bread. When you come to blitz them, use only as much vegetable stock as you need to achieve a sauce consistency. Fold in a fresh herb mix and season well. The Ask Lindsey advice column on DeliaOnline suggests using a slow-cooked courgette base, with the umami brought by a good helping of white miso. 2. Creamy pasta sauce “Yoghurt,” says Yotam Ottolenghi in his 2020 book Flavour, “as opposed to cream, has a natural acidity, so it makes creamy pasta sauces which are rich but not in any way cloying or unctuous.” Considering tomato brings acidity, this feels like a good alternative. Ottolenghi pairs his warm, cumin-flecked yoghurt sauce (stabilised with a couple of egg yolks and about a teaspoon of cornflour) with roasted butternut squash. 3. Pizza sauce If you have not yet sampled the joy of a white pizza, now is the time. Rachel Roddy stresses that a proper yeasted dough is crucial for Roman pizza bianco, the topping being a drizzle of olive oil with prosciutto, parmesan and figs in the summer. As it is winter, you may want something more seasonal, so spread your base with ricotta, cream cheese, mascarpone, cottage cheese or creme fraiche. Vegan options include chickpea puree and cashew cream. Top as you wish. 4. Lasagne There are so many options here. Butternut squash and sage. Salmon, sweet potato and greens. Caramelised onion, mushroom and blue cheese. J Kenji López-Alt’s spinach version is quite simple: he sautees the leaves with shallots and garlic in butter and olive oil, then drains them of all moisture, before chopping up and adding to a mix of ricotta or cottage cheese, blitzed with an egg, lots of parmesan, salt, pepper and nutmeg. Then he layers as many prepped lasagne sheets as the spinach mix will take, with dollops of a cheesy white sauce to bind everything. 5. BLT Tomato, as Dana Velden highlights on the Kitchn website, is fundamental to sandwich-building, for the “colour, flavour, juiciness and texture” it brings. Nonetheless, she offers a multitude of substitute slices. These include: baked or roasted root veg (butternut squash, turnips or swede); lemon-dressed cooked potato; roasted peppers from a jar; raw or cooked beetroot; pickles (courgette, aubergine, radish); persimmon; apple; pear; fig; kumquat; and kiwi. All of these know what to do with salty bacon and crispy iceberg. link: https://www.theguardian.com/food/2023/mar/01/desperate-for-a-blt-how-to-make-12-classic-tomato-recipes-without-any-tomatoes

A drone has crashed in the Moscow region in what was likely an attempt to target civilian infrastructure, the regional governor said. Andrei Vorobyov was speaking after the defence ministry reported downing two Ukrainian drones in southern Russia. Ukraine does not claim responsibility for attacks inside Russia. Russian energy giant Gazprom operates a facility near the village of Gubastovo, about 100 km (62 miles) from Moscow, where the drone crashed. Gazprom told Russian state-run news agency RIA Novosti that its operations in the Kolomna district had not been interrupted. The target of the drone in Kolomna "was probably a civilian infrastructure facility, which was not damaged", Mr Vorobyov posted on Telegram. "There are no casualties or damage on the ground. The FSB (Russian security service) and other competent authorities are investigating," he added. Images shared by Russian media and officials show a damaged drone in a snow-covered field in front of a forest of birch trees. The area around the Gazprom facility is heavily forested. The appearance of the drone matches that of the UJ-22 Airborne, a product of Ukrainian manufacturer Ukrjet. Ukrjet says the vehicle has a range of 800km - enough for it to reach the Kolomna area from Ukraine. A reverse image reveals no previous matches for the image, suggesting it is recent. Anton Gerashchenko, advisor to Ukraine's minister of internal affairs, tweeted a photo of the drone. "It is more than 500km away from Russian border with Ukraine. Soon Putin might get very afraid to show himself in public as drones can reach far distances," he wrote alongside the photo. If Ukraine was behind the Kolomna drone, it would be the closest attempted drone attack to the capital since Russia invaded Ukraine more than a year ago. It came as the Russian defence ministry said its forces had downed two Ukrainian drones in southern Russia. The ministry accused Kyiv of attempting to use drones "to attack civilian infrastructure in the Krasnodar region and the Adygea Republic", adding that they were "neutralised by electronic warfare units". Moscow has accused Ukraine of being behind attacks on Russian military infrastructure during the war, but Kyiv has not confirmed this. A Ukrainian drone attack on an airbase for bombers in southern Russia in December left three people dead, Moscow said. The Ukrainian military did not officially admit to the attack, but air force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat said the explosions were the result of what Russia was doing on Ukrainian soil. Just weeks before, Russia accused Ukraine of a similar attack on the same airfield, which is home to bombers that have carried out missile attacks on Ukraine. In August, a series of blasts rocked a military base in Crimea, in what was seen as a significant expansion of the conflict by Ukraine into Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014. Ukraine later claimed responsibility for that attack. President Vladimir Putin told the FSB on Tuesday to intensify its activity against what he said was increasing espionage and sabotage by Ukraine and the West. He instructed the FSB to strengthen security in territories occupied by Russia in eastern Ukraine. He said units deployed at the border must stop sabotage groups and prevent the passage of illegal weapons and ammunition. "We need to beef up our counterintelligence in general, because Western special services have traditionally been very active in relation to Russia," he said. "And now they have put in additional personnel, technical and other resources against us. We need to respond accordingly." Russia's defence ministry said its fighter jets were involved in a training exercise in the country's western airspace on Tuesday, hours after airspace over St Petersburg was closed due to reports of an unidentified object. link: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-64802453
