Here’s how you can convert a JPEG image to PNG or HEIF and vice versa straight from macOS on Mac - no apps required. You can convert between JPEG, PNG, and HEIF file formats in macOS on your Mac natively - no third-party app required at all Converting images is actually a very straightforward process - just download Photoshop or any other image editing software, open the image you want to convert inside said software, and export it to the format of your choice. See, easy peasy. However, that string of tasks in order to convert a JPEG, PNG, or HEIF image to something else is not everyone's cup of tea at all. You can avoid it altogether if you're using a Mac and running the latest software update. See, the thing is, macOS allows you to convert between JPEG, PNG, and HEIF files instantly without the need to install any third-party software at all. Once you've mastered this, you'll wonder why we even download apps for such a simple task. Anyway, let us take you to the tutorial itself because that's why you're here. Tutorial Step 1. Find the image you wish to convert - it can be a JPEG, PNG, or HEIF. If that image is in the Photos app, you might want to export it to the desktop before you can do anything. Step 2. Right-click on the image. Step 3. Hover the mouse pointer over Quick Action to reveal more options. Step 4. Now simply click on Convert Image. Step 5. You now see a box with a couple of options - Format and Image Size. Use the Format drop-down to select the format to which you want to convert the image - JPEG, PNG, or HEIF. You can use the Image Size drop-down to select how big you want the image to be. If you want to preserve the actual quality, then select Actual Size otherwise, go with something else - Small, Medium, or Large. Step 6. Once you have made your choices, click on the 'Convert to JPEG/PNG/HEIF' button. The only downside to this is a very obvious one - you get an extremely limited number of formats to convert to. But it’s highly likely you wouldn’t want to convert to anything else anyway. Secondly, you don’t get advanced controls for fine-tuning the converted image. You only get a vague ‘Image Size’ option which is more than enough for most of you out there but can be slightly annoying for those who want a little extra, such as what exact resolution to convert the image to. link: https://wccftech.com/how-to/how-to-convert-jpeg-image-to-png-heif-in-macos/

AMD's AIB partner, Vastarmor, has dropped the pricing of its custom Radeon RX 7900 XT by $150 US below its MSRP. AMD's Custom Radeon RX 7900 XT Pricing Drops $150 US Below Its MSRP In China The VASTARMOR Starry Sky Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics card is a custom variant designed for the Asian Pacific market. The custom graphics card, part of the company's new RDNA 3 lineup, offers a Navi 31 XT graphics core. The chip includes 84 Compute Units, equalling 5,376 cores. The graphics card has lower clock speeds of 2.0 GHz, about 300 MHz less than its XTX version. The card carries a 20 GB of GDDR6 memory capacity across a 320-bit bus interface. There's also the Infinity Cache that sits at 80 MB, a difference of 16 MB from the higher variant. VASTARMOR's AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT custom model graphics card version utilizes metallic backplates, reinforcing the body, and premium PCB boards. The graphics card is adorned in black and red with a triple-fan cooling design with support for smart starting and stopping. It is also reported to offer RGB breathing effects with its red, blue, and yellow lights. The VASTARMOR models share the same compute units as AMD's original model, with 20 GB of GDDR6 graphics memory, 320-bit wide bus interface, and memory speeds topping 20 Gbps. The maximum bandwidth is expected to access 800 GB/s. Like the AMD model, the VASTARMOR RX 7900 XT rounds out with a dual eight-pin power connector. This is much different than NVIDIA's power connector, which is double the pins of rival AMD. The TBP on the model is 355W which is an increase from previous generations. The VASTARMOR RX 7900 XT also supports 4K UHD, HDMI, and PCIe 4.0 connectivity. Chinese online retailer JD.com sells the VASTARMOR AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT GPU Starry Sky Edition with 20 GB GDDR6 memory for 6399 RMB which is 1000 RMB lower than its official Chinese MSRP of 7399 RMB so that's a $150 US reduction in terms of pricing. This appears exclusive to the Asian PC marketplace and will likely not be sold by an American retailer unless sold as used or by a secondhand or third-party seller online. For more graphics cards from VASTARMOR, you can check out the company's "self-operated" Jingdong page here. link: https://wccftech.com/amd-aib-drops-custom-radeon-rx-7900-xt-pricing-now-available-for-150-us-below-msrp/

You'll be waiting a long time for a Steam Deck 2 During an extensive interview with publication Rock Paper Shotgun, Steam Deck designer Lawrence Yang dropped a potential bomb on gamers who may be eagerly awaiting a sequel to the portable. As reported by PC Gamer, Yang stated that while he was excited about what improvements could be made to the portable system, "a true next-gen Deck with a significant bump in horsepower wouldn’t be for a few years." And while that may be disappointing news for some who were hoping for a true sequel, there’s good reason for Valve to not invest in a Steam Deck 2 just yet. According to Yang’s fellow Steam Deck designer, Pierre-Loup Griffais, "if high-end current-gen titles are able to scale to Deck and be a great experience, it also enables smoother performance on a wider variety of PCs, and improve the experience for the whole playerbase.” Considering that Valve’s Steam Deck is only celebrating its first year now, we’ll most likely not see a new one for at least a few years. Valve recently released a new update, one that makes it easier to transfer PC games between a PC and the Steam Deck. The update, which is currently only available to those in the Steam Deck Beta and Preview channels, allows you to perform a local data transfer between devices and is a faster alternative to using the internet for said transfer. You can also use this feature to transfer games between two PCs, but if you want to copy game files to a PC not registered to your Steam account you’ll need to change the Local Network Game Transfers settings from Self Only (the default) to Friends Only or Everyone. The Steam Deck 2 shouldn’t come out anytime soon This may be a spicy hot take but I hope that Valve doesn’t release a new Steam Deck for a long time. First, the portable system is quite young and clearly has plenty of steam (pun intended) left judging by the extensive official and community support that’s still ongoing. There are tons of accessories, programs, applications, and much more available to purchase and install now, and even more coming in the near and far future. Announcing and releasing a Steam Deck 2 would be a slap in the face to all that effort so far, since it would all have to essentially be reset. Then there’s the monetary aspect to this as well. The Steam Deck is an incredibly powerful and flexible portable machine, but it’s also a very expensive one. And asking gamers to drop support of an expensive product they invested in, just to purchase another expensive product and then rebuy accessories and reinstall all the programs and applications as well. And while Valve has made it no secret that there will eventually be a follow-up, I’m glad that Valve understands how releasing one so soon to the launch of its first would absolutely destroy any momentum the Steam Deck has picked up so far, and instead has opted to focus on supporting such a promising device instead. link: https://www.techradar.com/news/sorry-gamers-the-steam-deck-2-is-a-long-way-off

Fortnite has been a cultural phenomenon for more than five years now, and that means that Epic Games has pumped out a lot of skins for its battle royale shooter. The game has managed to garner a truly unprecedented number of crossovers from the broad world of pop culture, from Star Wars to anime to horror movies to sports to everything in-between. Unfortunately, the sheer volume of these outfits--over 1500 and counting, if you're curious--means that some are simply going to be better than others. But when you lay down your hard-earned V-bucks on a new skin, no matter how limited-time it may be, you should make sure it's not one of these stinkers. Now the question of which skins in Fortnite are the worst is obviously a very subjective one, and it's possible that you might own or even like some of the skins on this list. Ultimately, we tried to highlight a mix of some of Fortnite's worst offenders based on a variety of criteria, so you won't just see hated novelty skins below. (Sorry to all the Peelie haters out there.) Without further ado, here's the list: Mincemeat This isn't a ranked list, but if it were, this would be number one with a bullet. Mincemeat is not only one of the worst skins in Fortnite, but one of the strangest character designs in a video game in the past few years. While I have to give Epic credit for creativity when it comes to this concept--a terrifying pie man straight out of a horror movie--perhaps there's a reason that no other game thought to feature a skin like this. I appreciate Epic sticking with the Halloween theme, but this confection is ugly and unappealing, and only good for scaring your younger relatives. Fabio Sparklemane Perhaps the most controversial selection on this list, Fabio Sparklemane has divided Fortnite players for years now. I know that the rainbow-haired stallion has his defenders out there, but for me, he looks like a DeviantArt rip-off of a certain beloved child's television show starring colorful horses--a license that Epic could definitely swing if they were so inclined. Perhaps Fabio's generic, NPC-esque appearance is part of the appeal for some players, but for me, he sticks out like a sore thumb, and not in a good way. link: https://www.gamespot.com/gallery/the-9-worst-fortnite-skins-of-all-time/2900-4676/#7

In an emotional speech to his party First Minister Mark Drakeford has said his grief losing his wife will not stop his work for Labour. Close to tears, the Welsh party leader thanked those who showed him kindness after his wife Clare died in January. He also called for Sir Keir Starmer to ditch first past the post in favour of proportional representation. But the UK Labour leader said it was not a priority for an incoming Labour government. Earlier Sir Keir said he would return control over economic aid to Welsh ministers if he became PM. Starmer promises Welsh Labour aid cash control Funeral held for wife of Wales' first minister Senedd pays tribute to Mark Drakeford's late wife Mr Drakeford spoke at Welsh Labour conference in Llandudno on Saturday. He said in recent weeks he had been given "words of kindness and sympathy, from people within our party, and also from people I've never met". "That has been a strength to me, personally - a heartfelt thanks to you all." Later he added: "Even when our hearts are weighed down with the intolerable burden of grief, we know our duty, our moral obligation... that this party has to run towards the dangers that blight so many lives, and never ever run away from them." In his speech he gave his strongest support yet for major reforms to the Westminster electoral system. He called for Sir Keir Starmer to bring an end to the first past the post voting system, which sees MPs elected based on which candidate wins the most votes in a constituency. "The next Labour government must lead the task of democratic renewal," he said. "I do not believe that we can go on simply accepting a system which time and time again produces Conservative majorities on a minority of the votes cast." Appearing to address critics of proportional representation within his own party, Mr Drakeford said: "To those who continue to fear a change in the electoral system. "I say simply look at what we have done here in Wales - 25 years of winning and working within a proportional electoral system." He accused the Conservatives of hollowing out democracy with a "dreadful brand of selfish, self-enriching politics, where even a football commentator is expected to toe the Tory line or to find their job at risk". Responding to Mr Drakeford's calls for voting reform, Sir Keir said praised Mr Drakeford's "powerful speech". "I don't think anybody could not be moved by Mark's speech." He added: "It's not a priority for an incoming Labour government." This was an emotional speech from Mark Drakeford whose enthusiasm for public life is clearly undimmed by his recent tragedy. With all eyes at conference on an expected general election in 2024 he gave a rousing endorsement of UK Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer. But while Mr Drakeford is passionate about securing a UK Labour victory, it's also the case that the two men have very different views on some policy issues. Sir Keir looked uncomfortable when Mr Drakeford argued for electoral reform at Westminster and the avowed socialist, Mark Drakeford, looked less than enthused by Sir Keir's emphasis on "sound money" . Welsh Labour conference has always loved Mark Drakeford as first minister and his rapturous reception continued this time. Delegates gave Sir Keir a notably warmer reception than he's had at previous Welsh party conferences, a sign perhaps of the party's increasing confidence ahead of the next election. link: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-politics-64926567

Giraffes don't go into heat, don't have a breeding season and don't make mating calls. So how do giraffes know when it's the right time for love? Finding love can be difficult. But when you're bemoaning your own love difficulties, spare a thought for the giraffe. Giraffes don't go into heat like cats or dogs, don't have a breeding season, don't make mating calls and don't give visual clues that they're ready to mate. So how do giraffes find partners? It's kind of gross, but this is how baby giraffes are made: a male giraffe — called a bull — nudges a nearby female giraffe — a cow — and sniffs her genitalia. Sometimes he has to nudge her a few times, but eventually the female giraffe widens her stance and urinates for about five seconds into the male giraffe's mouth. The male giraffe then performs what's known as a "flehmen response" by curling back its upper lip, baring its teeth, and breathing in with its nostrils closed for several seconds. (The name comes from a German word for baring the teeth.) The flehmen response is also used by animals like horses and goats to transfer scents to the vomeronasal organ above the roof of their mouth, a very sensitive component of their sense of smell. Animal attraction Humans don't do flehmens; but animals do it when they want to get a good smell of something that interests them. In the case of an aroused male giraffe, he's hoping that chemicals he can detect in the female's urine — called pheromones, which can trigger a social response in some animals — will signal that she's in estrus, or fertile and ready to mate. When a male giraffe doesn't smell the right chemical signal in her urine, he leaves that female alone and moves on to another. But while most animals will wait until urine is on the ground before they smell it, the giraffe is too tall to do that, Lynnette Hart(opens in new tab), a professor at the University of California Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, told Live Science. Hart is the lead author of a new study on the behavior of giraffes published in the journal Animals(opens in new tab). The co-author is her husband Benjamin Hart(opens in new tab), an emeritus professor at the same veterinary school, and they've observed these and other behaviors among giraffes during field trips to the Etosha National Park(opens in new tab) in Namibia in southwest Africa. The Harts were able to get especially close to dozens of giraffes gathered near water holes in the park; usually giraffes can be seen only at a distance and run away when they are approached, Lynette Hart said. "This was really unique, to be right up close." Giraffe sex Mate-finding can be a lot of work for male giraffes. The Harts observed bull giraffes approaching cow giraffes roughly 150 times, but they only saw one time when the approach led to consummation. Once all these steps occur, giraffes mate in the manner of most mammals by the bull mounting the cow. Sex is conducted at a precarious height above the ground and lasts only a few seconds. If she gets pregnant, the female giraffe will gestate for a whopping 400 days before she gives birth standing up, so that her baby giraffe is well developed enough to stand and walk when it's born. link: https://www.livescience.com/giraffe-sex-is-even-weirder-than-we-thought-and-it-involves-pee

This black-and-blue time machine is programmed to head straight for postwar British sports car glory. ere's a great example of the classic MG motoring experience. MGs and other postwar sports cars offered high-quality driving at affordable prices. Check out the auction, which ends on March 14, on Bring a Trailer—which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos. bring a trailer badge CAR AND DRIVER Morris Garages started life as sporting specials, lightweight bodies perched on the chassis of heavier Morris cars. Early MGs were lively handlers and helped spur the postwar sportscar craze on both sides of the Atlantic. Up for auction this week is a lovely slice of vintage MG life. This 1954 MG TF 1500 is essentially an updated version of an idea that started in the 1920s. It followed the MG TD, which was preceded by the TC, and it by the TB. The MGA that immediately followed it in 1955 was the first modern MG, and it gave rise to a breed of cars that would create a new generation of enthusiasts. Returning GIs brought a few MGs back from England's green and pleasant land, and MG also had success as an exporter. They weren't Jaguars or Austin-Healeys, but they were more affordable to buy and relatively simple to work on. That simplicity is necessary, as owning a vintage British car requires a certain mechanical aptitude—and an even deeper knowledge of creative vulgarities. This TF example wears a little more chrome than may be acceptable in collector circles, but it is well restored and has the desirable 1.5-liter engine. The twin-carburetor four-cylinder is good for 62 horsepower, which makes the octagonal, 105-mph speedometer seem a trifle optimistic. Cars the likes of the TF weren't built for interstate drudgery. They were made for zipping around on country lanes at a pace that feels criminal but won't raise concern with the constabulary. It's the wind in your hair, bugs in your teeth, what's-that-funny-smell, sheer exhilaration of motoring that has kept these vehicles po[CENSORED]r into the current day. An MG T-series feels more alive at 30 mph than a Porsche Boxster does at 70. MG left the U.S. market with the rubber-bumper MGB, which had a crash-test-mandated ride height like a Porsche 911 Dakar. The MG brand is currently part of Chinese manufacturer SAIC's portfolio, and its U.K.-market electric MG4 crossover is reportedly pleasant to drive and comes in at about three-quarters the price of a VW ID.4. But the present is not the past, and while the future of the U.K. auto industry has glimmers of optimism, experiencing an MG T-series like this one will take you back to the brand's golden age. link: https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a43273904/1954-mg-tf-1500-bring-a-trailer-auction/

The idea was simple. Recruit hundreds of people in their 80s and 90s, equip them with fitness trackers, and monitor their physical activity. Then, when the participants died, collect their brains and examine the tissue. Is there evidence, lurking in the tissue, that exercise benefits the brain? The results, from a 2022 collaboration between the University of California in San Francisco and the University of British Columbia, were striking. Physical exercise, late in life, seemed to protect the ageing connections between brain cells – the synapses where memories are made. The work, if backed up by further studies, could see exercise, and potentially drugs that mimic biochemical aspects of activity – prescribed to help slow the onset of dementia. We know there is a 30%-80% reduced risk of dementia in people who exercise “We know there is a 30%-80% reduced risk of dementia in people who exercise,” says Kaitlin Casaletto, the lead author on the study and an assistant professor in neurology at UCSF. “My question was, wouldn’t it be cool if we could figure out exactly how this is happening? If we could identify some of the mechanisms of exercise for brain health? These are potential therapeutic targets we can bottle.” A small mountain of work has linked physical exercise to better brain health and lower risk of dementia in older age. One recent study of nearly 80,000 people in the UK found that the risk of dementia was halved in people who reached the goal of 10,000 steps a day. But much is still unclear. Part of the observed benefit could be down to people with healthier brains simply exercising more. While there are definite benefits to be had from exercise – greater blood flow to the brain, better cardiovascular health, lower blood pressure, less obesity and diabetes – there is still plenty to nail down. Dementia is the number one killer in the UK, with the disorder affecting about 900,000 people. Most cases, about two-thirds, are driven by Alzheimer’s disease, but it is far from the only cause. Other forms, namely vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, and frontotemporal dementia, arise from other processes. Whatever the cause, the steady destruction of brain cells erodes memory, thinking, movement and personality. In old age, dementia can be several of these conditions at once. Some of the highest rates of dementia are found in developed countries with older po[CENSORED]tions. In Germany, Italy and Japan, more than 20 in every 1,000 people have dementia compared with fewer than nine per 1,000 in proportionally younger countries including Mexico, Turkey and South Africa. The UK sits in the middle. Indigenous groups in the Amazon have some of the lowest rates. In one recent study, researchers confirmed only six cases among 604 Bolivian Tsimane and Moseten people aged 60 and over, suggesting that lifelong physical activity and healthier preindustrial diets substantially reduce the risk. Over the next three decades, global dementia is due to rise substantially, particularly in north Africa, the Middle East and eastern sub-Saharan Africa, where po[CENSORED]tion growth and ageing will be among the driving forces. But dementia is not inevitable, nor is it the reward for dodging other fatal conditions. Take all of the risk factors that we as individuals, or nations through their policies, might improve, and potentially 40% of cases could be prevented or delayed. We would not eradicate dementia, and many people who did everything to keep their brains healthy would still succumb to the disease. We could, however, dramatically reduce the risk, meaning more years of sound thinking, intact memories and independent living. “That figure, 40%, is an enormous percentage,” says James Rowe, professor of cognitive neurology at the University of Cambridge. “If we had a drug that could cut dementia by 40%, it would be a phenomenal success.” Our brains change even with healthy ageing. People vary tremendously, but vocabulary often improves past retirement age, while processing speed, the ease of learning new information, cognitive flexibility, and working memory – for example, how many digits of a phone number you can remember – weaken. Learning more slowly in older age is often framed as a negative, but it has its advantages. Young people know so little that learning everything fast makes sense. But older people weigh new information against a lifetime’s learning. Does it fit with what I know to be true? Is it reliable? Does it deserve to be learned? “When you are born, you are fast but know little. When you are old, you are slower but knowledgeable. Which is better? It depends on the situation,” says Rowe. Dementia is very different to healthy ageing. It is what happens when brain cells are destroyed by disease. A healthy older person can expect a gradual decline in memory and thinking skills, but people with dementia can develop profound problems with memory, judgment, language, concentration and personality. The sharp decline in performance is mirrored by a pronounced shrinkage of the brain. Last year, researchers at the universities of Cambridge and Pennsylvania stitched together 125,000 brain scans to reveal how the human brain changes from a 15-week-old foetus to a 100-year-old adult. The work was a tour de force. Ultimately, it should allow doctors to assess how a person’s brain is ageing over their lifetime, much as paediatric growth charts allow them to check whether children are developing normally. For example, a person’s brain might be in the 50th centile at age 45, but if it falls significantly on subsequent scans there may be a problem. The researchers already see stark shifts in scans from people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. “We see those individuals crashing through the centiles,” says Richard Bethlehem, an assistant professor in neuroinformatics at Cambridge. A lot of the seeds of poor brain health are sown in childhood and then built on through early adult life and middle age Because dementia is seen as a problem of old age, this might seem like the time to act. But ageing is a lifelong process: the better the brain ages, the better it can stave off or withstand dementia. “A lot of the seeds of poor brain health, including dementia, are sown well and truly in childhood and then built on through early adult life and middle age,” says Rowe. “The state of our brain health in late life, when we are conventionally worried about dementia, depends on a whole lifespan of lifestyle and activities.” In 2020, 28 world leading experts published a major report called the Lancet Commission on dementia. It identifies a dozen “potentially modifiable” factors that affect our risk of developing dementia. Which matters most depends on age. In youth, a good education makes an enormous difference, and benefits brain health for the rest of life. In midlife, not boozing too heavily and controlling blood pressure all come into play. In later life, not smoking, exercising regularly and keeping socially engaged stand out. How these help to prevent dementia is not always straightforward. A good education doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It can reflect a child’s circumstances: their home environment, household income and expectations all play a part in sculpting the brain. Armed with a good education, people are better equipped to look after themselves. But education seems to act directly on the brain too, creating what researchers call cognitive reserve and resilience. Build up brain capacity early in life and that reserve becomes a shield against future damage. Likewise, education boosts resilience, the brain’s ability to compensate when diseases like Alzheimer’s arise. The impact can be striking. “For people with a very high education, when you look at the brain postmortem, they can have a lot of neuropathology without having had any symptoms,” says Gill Livingston, professor of psychiatry of older people at University College London and lead author of the Lancet report. In short, the disease is there, but the brain can withstand it, at least to the point that obvious symptoms never manifest. According to the Lancet Commission, poor education accounts for 7% of dementia worldwide. But the benefits of stretching one’s brain don’t end in youth. People who do cognitively challenging jobs have a lower risk of dementia, too, regardless of their education. As the Lancet report puts it: “The use it or lose it hypothesis suggests that mental activity, in general, might improve cognitive function.” The impact of other brain-stretching activities is far from clear, however. Despite a flurry of brain training programmes being developed to boost cognitive skills, there is no good evidence that people improve at anything apart from the particular task they practise. One message that runs through all the research on dementia prevention is that a healthy lifestyle helps. Diet is important: you cannot grow a good brain without good nutrition, and a healthy diet helps to maintain it. A recent meta-analysis of studies, involving nearly 35,000 people, found that strict adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with a 21% lower risk of cognitive disorders and a 40% lower risk of Alzheimer’s. Whether specific nutrients and compounds are directly beneficial to the brain is the focus of intensive research, but healthy diets are encouraged regardless, because they reduce risks caused by other disorders, such as high blood pressure, poor vascular health, obesity and diabetes. Which single intervention could reduce dementia risk the most? Preventing hearing loss Which single intervention could reduce dementia risk the most? The answer is one that even some researchers find surprising: preventing hearing loss. Globally, hearing impairment is believed to account for about 8% of dementia. Hearing loss means less stimulation for the brain, but also more social isolation for the individual. The brain appears to shrink more rapidly, or at least the temporal lobes, which focus on sound processing, emotions and memories. What’s striking is that the link between hearing loss and dementia is all but absent if people wear hearing aids. Livingston believes this is a huge opportunity. While people with poor eyesight tend to have it corrected, a large proportion of those who cannot hear well either think other people mumble, or are reluctant to wear a hearing aid. Correcting hearing loss as well as we correct poor sight could be a gamechanger, if enacted globally. “I think wearing a hearing aid is still stigmatised,” Livingston says, but she wonders, with more and more people now wearing earbuds, whether that barrier will soon fall too. The picture emerging from decades of research is that the best protection against dementia comes from building a good brain, keeping it healthy and active, and avoiding too much damage. The latter can happen in seconds or years. Brain injuries, from traffic accidents, military service, falls, or impacts during sports such as boxing, rugby and horse riding, all increase the risk of dementia. So does the sustained damage that comes with smoking, air pollution and excessive alcohol intake – over 21 units a week. Brain injuries are thought to account for about 3% of dementia, with heavy drinking and smoking making up 1% and 5% respectively. Air pollution accounts for around 1% of dementia. Woman flexing her muscles on beach Seven healthy habits may help cut dementia risk, study says Read more As might be expected, some experts in the field already take steps to reduce their risk. Because it is unclear which exercises are most protective, Dr Casaletto does weekly yoga, but she also jogs and includes high-intensity sprints in her routine. She eats healthily, maximising the vegetables, whole grains, olive oil, fish and legumes of the Mediterranean diet. Then there is the cognitive component. She tries to stay socially and mentally curious – pushing herself at work, broadening her collaborations, and hanging out with people she wouldn’t normally socialise with. “I think novelty is really important,” she says. “If we are doing the same thing over and over, we are not going to be pushing our brains into forming new connections.” As part of her own risk-reducing lifestyle, Prof Livingston lifts weights and tries to reach 10,000 steps a day, even though she acknowledges it is “not a magic number”. She reads and writes. And she is wary of the impact of giving up work. “I can see that not being retired keeps you so much more active in lots of ways,” she says. “It might make me less likely to retire. Though I do hope that if I get to the stage when I ought to because I can’t function, that my colleagues will tactfully let me know.” Four changes to make now Dementia research, like all research, comes with caveats. Most studies cannot prove that doing X instead of Y helps fend off dementia. More commonly, scientists find associations, such as older people who exercise develop less dementia. But there is always the risk of reverse causation. What if people prone to dementia simply exercise less? Whether, and to what extent, exercise protects people’s brains can take some unpicking. The bottom line on whether this or that action keeps dementia at bay is rarely clear cut. Often the picture emerges with time, as evidence builds from different directions. But these are some things that you can do to help reduce the risk. link: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/mar/11/dont-forget-to-floss-the-science-behind-dementia-and-the-four-things-you-should-do-to-prevent-it

Ukrainians are enjoying the onset of spring. The nights are still cold, but they are emerging from a winter of Russian missile strikes that have cut their power, heating and their water too. The winter was very hard but it was now over, declared President Volodymyr Zelensky. Ukraine still had heat and the country was unbreakable, was the message. Until Thursday, Ukraine had just gone for more than three weeks in a row with no blackouts and even had surplus in the system. There had been no Russian attacks for three weeks either, and it looked as if Vladimir Putin's battle to bring down Ukraine's supply was over. "Yes, we're doing it, but who started it?" he said in December, pinning the blame on Kyiv. It was a far more desperate story at that point. As much as half the energy infrastructure was damaged and a Ukrainian nuclear security expert warned the situation was close to critical. But during those weeks of quiet, Russia was stocking up weaponry. In the early hours of Thursday it fired 81 missiles and left four regions grappling with emergency power cuts. By Friday, half a million people still had no power in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-biggest city. "It's totally cold now. We have food, but only part of it has been cooked," said Oleksii as he watched the battery life on his mobile phone slip to 14%. Five hundred people live in his block of flats, and when he went to his local "invincibility centre" to power up his phone, there were too many people with the same idea. Kyiv was also hit and one hospital treating 700 people went without heating and hot water for several hours. Another 150,000 people were left with no power in Zhytomyr, two hours' drive south of the Belarus border. The mayor said the next few weeks would be critical and rolling blackouts are looming for this city west of Kyiv. But, as resident Eugene Herasymchuk wrapped up his day at work on a sunny spring day, he was confident for the future. "We had three weeks without attacks and we had power. And the power in the system allowed local authorities to start up the trolleybuses and trams. That was a big step because before that public transport was on a pause." And for many Ukrainians, it was not long before they were back on the grid. "It's safe to say that Ukraine won on the energy front," said Tetyana Boyko from civic network Opora, praising the fleet of energy workers and international help. "Let's pray, but I think the worst-case scenario is over." The winter may be over, but Oleksii in Kharkiv believes the battle to save Ukraine's power supply from Vladimir Putin's missiles will continue as long as Russia has the ability to strike it. Every one of Ukraine's thermal and hydroelectric power plants has been damaged since Russia launched its assault on the energy infrastructure last October. Kyiv had already lost the use of Europe's biggest nuclear power plant at Zaporizhzhia, which is in Russia hands. Sub-stations have been reduced to hunks of twisted metal, no longer capable of transforming the electricity to power for homes and businesses. For two weeks in the depth of winter, the BBC followed teams of engineers and technicians rushing to repair the damage that the missiles had done. One substation was hit six times with missiles or drones and replacing these damaged transformers will take time. More from Paul Adams: On the front line with engineers in Ukraine Transformers have quickly become Ukraine's number one requirement. It needs more than the world can produce in a year and so far only one high-voltage transformer has been sent, although dozens of lower-power machines have arrived. As the winter wore on, Ukraine's armed forces grew more adept at shooting down Russia's missiles and drones. But this week, only 34 of the missiles were destroyed, because Russia used different, high-speed weapons. They included hypersonic Kh-47 Kinzhal missiles as well as anti-ship and anti-aircraft missiles. "They can cause huge, huge destruction," said one industry official. Until Russia's full-scale war on Ukraine began in February 2022, there were 15 nuclear reactors on stream at four power stations. Six of those reactors were at Zaporizhzhia, seized by the occupying military in the early days of the invasion. For months, the plant has been at the centre of a high-stakes nuclear row, amid accusations that Moscow wants to connect it to Russia's electricity grid. The other three power stations are South Ukraine and Rivne and Khmelnytskyi in the west. Between them, they now produce half of Ukraine's power. That may sound bleak, but a combination of an unusually mild winter and sheer hard work means Ukraine has moved back from the brink and the sense of optimism is palpable. Power plants have been restored and repaired. One source in the industry told the BBC that as the days became sunnier and warmer, it would become harder and harder for Russia's military might to terrorise his country. The east-central city of Dnipro has endured several deadly missile strikes over the winter, and this week was no different. But there have been no problems for weeks with energy supplies. "The city has transformed. Finally, street lights are back, and it's no longer scary to walk the city streets," said Inna Shtanko, a young mother with a son under the age of two. Cooking and having a hot shower have become part of the daily routine once more for her family. "Our psychological state has improved considerably, because our family and other mothers too can easily plan our day." There's a similar story in Kherson, occupied by Russian forces until they retreated across the Dnipro river last November. Life was hard for several weeks after the Russians left the southern city with no basic utilities. "We didn't have any electricity for about month and a week, then we had it for two hours a day, then gradually it stopped breaking," said local entrepreneur Alexei Sandakov. Now he boasts a regular power supply, although the pressure on the system is far lower than before the war because the po[CENSORED]tion of 55,000 is a fraction of what it was before the Russians invaded. Po[CENSORED]tion numbers have fallen across Ukraine, with more than eight million refugees beyond its borders, and that too has put less strain on the energy infrastructure. Consumption is down and the refugees have not yet come back, as one official remarked. The overall sense is that the damage caused by this latest wave of missiles will be repaired quickly. The damage was considerable, but engineers have become highly skilled at restoring power within days, even after a major attack. "It's like a competition: how quickly can they cause us damage and how quickly can we repair. And we are winning that competition," said Oleksandr Kharchenko, director of Kyiv's Energy Industry Research Centre. In Zhytomyr, Eugene Herasymchuk believes things are looking up. "A lot of Ukrainians say it's better to have one cold and one dark winter than 100 years with Russia - so I think we can handle this." Ukrainians now have everything on their side, according to Mr Kharchenko, from the improving weather to the support of international donors and the professional staff in the energy industry. But he is more guarded about the future. "I don't say we've won the energy war, but I can say we won the energy battle this winter." link: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-64899045

The drivers are reportedly protesting higher fuel prices and the growth of ridesharing apps. Rabat - Morocco’s National Union of Taxi Professionals has called on its members and taxi drivers in the country to join a protest in front of the Ministry of Interior’s administrations on March 21. The union called on its members to give their “effective participation” in the national protest starting at 10AM on the planned day. The drivers are set to protest the rising fuel prices in the country, according to converging reports. Since the Ukraine war erupted last year, fuel prices have been on a steady rise, with many drivers demanding the ability to raise taxi fares in order to preserve margins. While Morocco’s government promised subsidies to the transport workers to ease the burden, many drivers have complained that the subsidies are not enough, or that they cannot gain access to them. Read also: Morocco Provides Aid To Cab Operators Instead of Drivers In 2022, union activists said that 40% of workers did not receive their share of subsidies despite applying, suggesting subsidizing fuel prices instead, and capping them for transport professionals. Another source of frustration for Moroccan taxi drivers over the past few years has been the rise of ridesharing apps such as Careem, which they claim need more government supervision so as to not take away from their customer base. Some also complain that drivers for ridesharing apps do not carry the necessary licenses or qualifications. While companies like Careem have been attempting to reach agreements with the taxi drivers for a few years, tensions between the two tend to bubble back up, with rideshare app users complaining about harassment or even violence in some extreme cases. link: https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2023/03/354416/moroccan-taxi-drivers-to-protest-at-the-ministry-of-interior

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC could feature a single Cortex-X4 core Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC is the latest and the company's most powerful chipset. It has been used in some of the new high-end smartphones recently, such as the OnePlus 11 5G, iQoo 11 5G and the much talked about Samsung Galaxy S23 series. According to recent leaks, the key specifications of the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC have been revealed. The new chipset is expected to offer significant improvements over its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, in terms of processing power, graphics capabilities, and energy efficiency. According to a leak by RGcloudS (@RGcloudS), Qualcomm will launch the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset with the same CPU layout as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which has the 1+4+3 configuration. Now, according to a new report, the company is increasing the number of performance cores while sacrificing an efficiency core with a new 1+5+2 configuration. Leaker Revegnus( @Tech_Reve) suggested that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset is said to have a single Cortex-X4 core running at 3.2 GHz. It will have five Cortex-A720 cores running at 3.0 GHz and two Cortex-A520 cores running at 2.0 GHz. This is far more likely, as another leak predicted that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor will require all the performance cores it can get to achieve 1,930/6,236 points in Geekbench's single and multi-core tests. iPhone 5G Modem to Be Made on TSMC’s 3nm Process: Report UFS 4.1 memory, LPDDR5 7,500 MT/s RAM, an Adreno 750 GPU, and a Qualcomm X75 5G modem are among the other Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset specifications. According to the leak, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will be built on TSMC's N4P process node, implying that three generations of Qualcomm flagships will be locked on what are effectively multiple variations of TSMC's N5 node. The big performance improvements mentioned above will likely necessitate more than a minor node advancement. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is a 3 nm chip expected to be produced on either Samsung or TSMC's cutting-edge node, or on both Samsung and TSMC's cutting-edge node. link: https://www.gadgets360.com/mobiles/news/qualcomm-snapdragon-8-gen-3-chipset-specifications-leak-3852248

AMD's recently launched Ryzen 7000 CPU lineup has been a game-changer in terms of overall performance and efficiency against Intel's 13th Gen options. The company recently hosted its newest "Meet The Expert" webinar where they not only highlighted the performance efficiency these chips offer but also their competitive positioning against Intel chips. AMD Ryzen 7000's Competitive Positioning Chart Shows Strong X, X3D & Non-X Lineup Against Intel 13th Gen, Efficiency Main Highlight In the latest processor overview chart, AMD compares its entire Ryzen 7000 Non-X, X, and X3D CPU lineup against Intel's 13th Gen offerings. The company has also included the Ryzen 7 7800X3D on its list which doesn't release until next month but the company wants users, especially gamers, to get an idea of what kind of performance to expect. RELATED STORY Jason R. Wilson AMD AIB Drops Custom Radeon RX 7900 XT Pricing, Now Available For $150 US Below MSRP Starting with the top, the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D is positioned against the Intel Core i9-13900KS which is an interesting choice. The Ryzen 9 7950X3D does edge out the 13900KS in games but in specific work-load tasks, the 13900KS should sit ahead whereas the Ryzen 9 7950X is the fastest chip from the red camp when we talk about application workloads. But then again, these might only be the prices that AMD is comparing. As such, the Ryzen 9 7950X competes with the Core i9-13900K. The AMD Ryzen 9 7900X3D is also positioned against the Intel Core i9-13900K whereas the Non-X part is positioned against the Core i9-13900. The AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D is the one that stands out with its competitive positioning against the Intel Core i7-13700K. The 13700K should perform much better in application workloads but the 7800X3D is going to be a stellar gaming chip for its price & should be able to outperform the 13900K at a $449 US price point as shown in simulated tests that various tech outlets ran. The AMD Ryzen 7 7700X and Ryzen 7 7700 are positioned against the Core i7-13700K and Core i7-13700 while the Ryzen 5 7600X and Ryzen 5 7600 are positioned against the Core i5-13600K & the Core i5-13600. One of the main focuses of the presentation was the efficiency of the new Ryzen 7000 lineup, especially the X3D parts. The Ryzen 9 7950X3D is said to deliver almost twice the efficiency of the Intel Core i9-13900K in Cinebench R23 (Multi-Threaded Workload) and that's also true in a majority of games as we saw in our own review. Furthermore, AMD hits back at Intel with its commitment to AM5's platform longevity. The red team says that AM5 offers better I/O than Intel's Z790 and Z690 platforms and will also offer future-generation CPU support for years to come which is likely not going to be the case for Intel since they already have a new socket/platform planned in the form of Z890 (LGA 1851). But the blue team does plan on refreshing its 13th Gen Raptor Lake for the desktop platform later this year. This will be three generations of CPUs whereas AM4 offered four generations of CPU support (Zen 1, Zen 2, Zen 3, Zen 4). link: https://wccftech.com/amd-shows-ryzen-7000-cpu-competitive-positioning-against-intel-13th-gen-cpus-highlights-impressive-efficiency-numbers/

Snowcrashed Fortnite Chapter 4 season 2 is here, boasting a psychedelic new trailer, along with a range of new cosmetics, items, and locations. Fortnite’s latest update promises all sorts of new goodies. Mega City, a brand new map comes with a new biome full of new locations including the tranquil cherry blossoms of Steamy Springs, the waters of Knotty Nets, and the frantic battles of Kenjutsu Crossing, just to name a few. The latest season(opens in new tab) also comes with two new weapons, the Havoc Pump Shotgun and the Havoc Suppressed Assault Rifle, as well as two new vehicles designed especially for Mega City’s winding streets. A new Battle Pass has also dropped. It’s full of futuristic character designs that would be right at home in the cyberpunk streets of Mega City and will set you back 950 V-Bucks. In a jarring twist, folks who grab the Battle Pass can also unlock Eren Jaeger, the protagonist of iconic anime Attack on Titan (now in its 4th season). However, given Mega City’s emphasis on grind rails and 3D traversal, the inclusion of wall-jumping, building-scaling Eren Jeager doesn’t seem quite as strange on second thought. The launch trailer for the new update shows off the new movement options wonderfully. Chic characters use grind rails to navigate Mega City’s futuristic metropolis, before we’re shown a glimpse of some of the other areas in the biome. The gentle cherry blossom trees of Steamy Springs look gorgeous as a stylish samurai cuts their way through adversaries while leaping across rooftops. It’s psychedelic, cyberpunk, and forth-wall breaking all at once. You wouldn't find this sort of thing in Call of Duty: Warzone or Player Unknown's Battlegrounds, that's for sure. I remember, back in the mists of time, seeing an advert for a zombie survival game called Fortnite on the side of a bus one morning as I walked to work. I never imagined that the title would one day serve up such a gorgeous neon-tinted melange of urban futurism for its players. It’s incredible to think that a game with relatively humble beginnings is now in a position where it can offer up such a wide breadth of experiences. I confess, I found the trailer rather charming. Fortnite seems willing to shatter the fourth wall with a cheeky wink and a wry smile. The folks behind the trailer are fully aware of how jarring it is to see Attack on Titan’s Eren Jeagar appear in an environment that looks like it might belong in Cyberpunk 2077. However, what’s also clear is that the artists and designers are reveling in the incongruity. They are right to do this because Fortnite at its heart is an expansive playset of dolls and action figures which invites the imaginations of players to run wild. The title deliberately and proudly breaks a lot of the arbitrary boundaries we set up in our fiction. There is something wonderfully childlike about Fortnite’s inherent playfulness, and it’s heartening to see that Epic seems committed to continuing this trend. link: https://www.techradar.com/news/fortnite-chapter-4-season-2-looks-like-cyberpunk-2077-on-a-mind-bending-sugar-rush
