The DART experiment also provided fresh insights into planetary collisions that may have been common in the early solar system. National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA's) Hubble Space Telescope captured a series of photos of asteroid Dimorphos when it was deliberately hit by a 1,200-pound NASA spacecraft called DART on September 26, 2022, according to their statement. Hubble's time-lapse movie of the aftermath of DART's collision reveals surprising and remarkable, hour-by-hour changes as dust and chunks of debris were flung into space, NASA said in their statement. Smashing head on into the asteroid at 13,000 miles per hour, the DART impactor blasted over 1,000 tons of dust and rock off of the asteroid. The Hubble movie offers invaluable new clues into how the debris was dispersed into a complex pattern in the days following the impact, NASA said. This was over a volume of space much larger than could be recorded by the LICIACube cubesat, which flew past the binary asteroid minutes after DART's impact, they said. The primary objective of DART, which stands for Double Asteroid Redirection Test, was to test our ability to alter the asteroid's trajectory as it orbits its larger companion asteroid, Didymos, the agency said. Though neither Didymos nor Dimorphos poses any threat to Earth, data from the mission will help inform researchers how to potentially divert an asteroid's path away from Earth, if ever necessary, the statement said. The DART experiment also provided fresh insights into planetary collisions that may have been common in the early solar system. "The DART impact happened in a binary asteroid system. We've never witnessed an object collide with an asteroid in a binary asteroid system before in real time, and it's really surprising. "I think it's fantastic. Too much stuff is going on here. It's going to take some time to figure out," said Jian-Yang Li of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona. The study, led by Li along with 63 other DART team members, was published on March 1 in the journal Nature. The movie shows three overlapping stages of the impact aftermath: the formation of an ejecta cone, the spiral swirl of debris caught up along the asteroid's orbit about its companion asteroid, and the tail swept behind the asteroid by the pressure of sunlight, resembling a windsock caught in a breeze, the statement said. The statement described that the Hubble movie starts at 1.3 hours before impact. In this view both Didymos and Dimorphos are within the central bright spot; even Hubble can't resolve the two asteroids separately. The thin, straight spikes projecting away from the center (and seen in later images) are artifacts of Hubble's optics. The first post-impact snapshot is 2 hours after the event. Debris flies away from the asteroid, moving with a range of speeds faster than four miles per hour, fast enough to escape the asteroid's gravitational pull, so it does not fall back onto the asteroid, the statement said. The ejecta forms a largely hollow cone with long, stringy filaments. At about 17 hours after the impact the debris pattern entered a second stage. The dynamic interaction within the binary system starts to distort the cone shape of the ejecta pattern, the statement described. The most prominent structures are rotating, pinwheel-shaped features. The pinwheel is tied to the gravitational pull of the companion asteroid, Didymos. "This is really unique for this particular incident," said Li. "When I first saw these images, I couldn't believe these features. I thought maybe the image was smeared or something." Hubble next captures the debris being swept back into a comet-like tail by the pressure of sunlight on the tiny dust particles, the statement said. This stretches out into a debris train where the lightest particles travel the fastest and farthest from the asteroid. The mystery is compounded later when Hubble records the tail splitting in two for a few days, the statement said. A multitude of other telescopes on Earth and in space, including NASA's James Webb Space Telescope and Lucy spacecraft, also observed the DART impact and its outcomes. This Hubble movie is part of a suite of new studies published in the journal Nature about the DART mission. link: https://www.gadgets360.com/science/news/nasa-hubble-telescope-captures-collision-dart-asteroid-dimorphos-3834581

Is your iPhone charging slowly after updating to iOS 16.1 / iOS 16.3? You might want to turn off the Clean Energy Charging feature. Fix the recent slow iPhone charging issue by simply turning off the ‘Clean Energy Charging’ toggle switch from settings It's no secret that Apple loves the environment and wants to do everything possible to make its carbon footprint smaller. With iOS 16.1 for iPhone, Apple wants users to play their part in this as well by introducing a feature called Clean Energy Charging. The way this feature works is actually quite simple - whenever you plug in your iPhone for charging, it will only add power to the iPhone as long as the grid is supplying clean energy to your location with a smaller footprint. This also means your iPhone may end up charging slowly while it waits for clean energy in the grid. Interestingly, that is exactly the case, and a lot of users have started complaining on different forums and sites that their iPhone charging speeds have significantly dropped lately. How did they fix it? By turning off the Clean Energy Charging feature. If your iPhone has started to charge slow lately despite having a fast charging setup - usually a USB-C to Lightning cable with a 20W adapter - then congratulations, you’ve been selected to protect the Earth and become its savior. However, you can turn this feature off in order to charge up your iPhone at full speed. Simply follow the steps below, and you’ll be back to how things were before this feature was introduced. Tutorial Step 1. Launch the Settings app. Step 2. Scroll down and tap on Battery. Step 3. Now tap on Battery Health. Step 4. Scroll all the way down and turn off the Clean Energy Charging toggle switch, as shown in the screenshot below: While this is a great way to bring charging speeds back to normal, do keep in mind that it may increase your carbon footprint. But then again, many people out there may not even care about this thing at all. Which side you end up choosing is entirely up to you. link: https://wccftech.com/how-to/fix-slow-iphone-charging-by-turning-off-clean-energy-charging/

After the recent reveal from Intel about preparing its Video Super Resolution (VSR) for Google's Chrome browsers, Microsoft has announced its version of VSR for use in its proprietary Edge browser, which was based on the Chromium browser. Microsoft introduces experimental Video Super Resolution to its Edge web browser This new video upscaling integration from Microsoft will allow AMD's Radeon graphics cards and NVIDIA's GeForce GPUs to have the availability to take advantage of the latest enhancement technology. It has been confirmed that AMD Radeon RX 5700 GPUs through the company's 7800 series will be compatible. In contrast, NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 20 through 40 series that utilize Tensor cores will have the same functionality as its competitor. Microsoft Edge Video Super Resolution NVIDIA (RTX 20 Series and newer) AMD (RX5700 and newer) https://www.microsoftedgeinsider.com/en-us/whats-new Microsoft's new EDGE VSR uses artificial intelligence to enhance video resolutions below 720p and not less than 192 pixels². Additionally, suppose the video has Digital Rights Management (DRM) protection, such as Netflix, Prime Video, and Hulu content. In that case, the new EDGE VSR might not be fully compatible. The new technology will enhance text visibility and assist with removing artifacts from video compression. edge://flags/#edge-video-super-resolution Systems that run on battery will also be unable to access the capability. Right now, only half of the users that meet the conditions for the functionality will have access to EDGE VSR. Microsoft reports that the corporation plans to add the same capability in discrete and integrated GPUs. Due to the computation power required to cleanup and upscale videos, video super resolution (VSR) is currently offered only when the following conditions are met: The device has one of the following GPUs: Nvidia RTX 20/30/40 series OR AMD RX5700-RX7800 series GPUs. The video is played at less than 720p resolution. The device is connected to AC power. Both the height and width of the video are greater than 192 pixels. The video is not protected with Digital Rights Management technologies like PlayReady or Widevine. Frames from these protected videos are not accessible to the browser for processing. We are working on automatic Hybrid GPU support for laptops with multiple GPUs. Meanwhile, you can try VSR by changing Windows settings to force Edge to run on your discrete GPU. The feature is currently available in the Canary channel for 50% of users and will be enabled when the above conditions are met. When the feature is enabled, you will see an HD icon in the address bar. Clicking the icon will allow you to enable or disable the feature. If you would like the try the feature out manually, you can enable the feature in edge://flags/#edge-video-super-resolution Wccftech does want to warn Microsoft Edge users that enabling any experimental features on the browser can disrupt the functionality and should proceed with caution. Users can expect to lose browser data and full browser use if any issues arise. link\:https://wccftech.com/microsofts-edge-video-super-resolution-will-enhance-video-for-amd-and-nvidia-graphics-cards/

Make chocolate with ghosts in Haunted Chocolatier Haunted Chocolatier, a simulation RPG, has been announced by the creator of Stardew Valley, ConcernedApe. In Haunted Chocolatier, you'll be playing as a chocolatier with the goal of making the best delicious desserts possible. Success requires gathering as many rare and exciting ingredients as you can and then making your creations as delectable as possible. Oh, and you'll be working out of the kitchen in your own haunted mansion. If you're waiting for the Haunted Chocolatier as intently as we are, then read on to find out everything we currently know about the Stardew Valley follow-up so far. Haunted Chocolatier: cut to the chase What is it? A spooky chocolate-making sim that follows the style of Stardew Valley. When can I play it? No release date yet What can I play it on? PC (other platforms TBC) HAUNTED CHOCOLATIER RELEASE DATE AND PLATFORMS For platforms, the developer has only committed to PC right now, but has said he has "every intention of bringing it to the other major platforms as well". We'll almost certainly see Haunted Chocolatier supported on Steam Deck, though we'd expect it'll come to the Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5. However, it may be a delayed release like with Stardew Valley. Unfortunately, the game doesn't yet have a release date of any kind - not even a vague '2022' release window. Launch details for Haunted Chocolatier are thin on the ground right now, and over on the game's FAQ page(opens in new tab), ConcernedApe says: "I can’t commit to a release date yet. It’s still relatively early in development, and I want to be able to work in peace without the pressure of a release date". HAUNTED CHOCOLATIER: TRAILERS Latest trailer Right now, we just have the announcement trailer for Haunted Chocolatier, which gave us a good look at what we should expect from the gameplay. You can see this in full below: More trailers There are no other gameplay trailers as of now, but if you want to keep up to date with all the developer's antics and creations, then check out ConcernedApe's official YouTube channel(opens in new tab). HAUNTED CHOCOLATIER: STORY AND SETTING It looks like Haunted Chocolatier might have more sinister elements than ConcernedApe's previous game, Stardew Valley. While the trailer shows friendly ghosts helping to manage your chocolate shop, we also meet a bartender named Nigel, who doesn't seem overjoyed to have another chocolatier rock up to the town. We do know there'll be some lore overlap with Stardew Valley, but it remains to be seen how that'll work. So far, ConcernedApe has been keen to make clear that Haunted Chocolatier will have a self-contained identity. Reiterating that when speaking to a fan in a Twitter(opens in new tab) reply, ConcernedApe said: "It's gonna be its own separate game with a self-contained identity... it's not a "[Stardew Valley 2]". But there might be some shared lore; I haven't nailed down exactly to what degree the two will be connected". HAUNTED CHOCOLATIER: GAMEPLAY Thanks to that announcement trailer, we've got an idea of what to expect. For starters, there is a lot of similarity to Stardew Valley. Most obviously is the return of Stardew's iconic pixelated art style, which will bring this game's new characters and locations to life. We also get to see that Stardew's combat and romance systems will be making a return. ConcerenedApe has stressed this is a game still very early in development, so it'll be a while before we'll likely see new features added to Haunted Chocolatier. There's even every chance we might find certain aspects taken away or changed. HAUNTED CHOCOLATIER: NEWS Haunted Chocolatier gets a new screenshot Offering a small new update on the game, ConcernedApe has taken to Twitter to release a brand new screenshot. While you can't discern much from this image, it's a nice update that the project's moving ahead, if nothing else. When asked about how development was proceeding, ConcernedApe replied: "Progress is pretty good, but it does take a long time to make a game, and I'm making this completely from scratch (Except the very rare re-use of something from Stardew [Valley], if it makes sense). Still just in the middle of the long grind". link:" https://www.techradar.com/news/haunted-chocolatier

The upcoming battle pass for Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 2 has leaked, including eight character skins. Thanks to Fortnite content creator Shiina and Hypex, we know who all the playable characters for the upcoming season will be. In a tweet they shared, we get a good look at who will be included in the upcoming battle pass. The picture consists of several original Fortnite characters, including a reimagined version of fan-favorite Drift. But per Fortnite tradition, Epic has included another character from a well-known franchise: Eren Yeager, the main character and hero (depending on who you ask) of the hit anime Attack on Titan. FIRST LOOK AT THE ENTIRE SEASON 2 BATTLE PASS 👀🔥 This list is 100% confirmed as the person who contacted both @HYPEX & me was able to send us very good evidence of all the leaks! One of the first characters shown off appears to be a lizard-like human wearing a jacket, someone who was previously teased in the Cipher event. We can assume that Season 2 will start on March 10, a day after Season 1 ends. The upcoming season is rumored to feature ODM (omni-directional mobility) gear from the Attack on Titan anime that'll work similarly to the Spider-Man Web Shooter or Grappler. The timing of the long-requested Attack on Titan crossover is no coincidence; Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 3 debuts today, March 4. Probably the best cake destruction physics you'll see this year. A new video of Dead Island 2(opens in new tab) shows off about 15 minutes of gameplay, highlighting the absolutely over-the-top gorefest(opens in new tab) that is its ranged and melee combat. It's full of campy-to-annoying dialogue and cheap laughs, but they're still effective. Honest to God more than anything it reminds me of the absolutely absurd tone of modern American Professional Wrestling. The trailer follows "slayer" character Dani through an upscale LA neighborhood as she bashes, stabs, shoots, and otherwise splatters zombies while cracking a bunch of cheesy and/or annoying quips. (Sounds like something else we saw recently(opens in new tab).) Again, though, the approach to atmospheric violence, outrageous fighting, and campy dialogue more than anything reminds me of the absolute silliness that is wrestling. It's a decent promise of variety, as the gameplay reveal promises "dozens" of different zombie types which are best dealt with using different weapons and skills. It also shows off the abilities of the protagonist "slayers," who are seemingly immune to the zombie plague but have had their DNA mutated by it anyways. That lets Dani enter "fury mode" and grow claws and strength that can toss zombies across the room. There's more than just splattering shown off, as the trailer dives into systems like the obligatory crafting of weird weapons: Katana with a flaming propane nozzle, electrified fist claws, etc. There are also what developer Dambuster calls "curveballs," weird limited-use powers like meatbait, a "sack of blood and guts to draw zombies away from you." Naturally a crafting system means that you will spend far more time gathering garbage than the five seconds in this trailer that the protagonist spends picking up garishly highlighted wire, lightbulbs, and random chemicals in a broom closet. Also on display are the skill cards(opens in new tab) that are replacing the talent tree from Dead Islands of yore. These let you customize your character with powers and stunts like stylish mid-air full-body dropkicks (wrestling!) and slamming ground stomps to trip up nearby enemies (also wrestling!). Near the trailer's end there's also a series showing off Apex Zombies, which are "hyper-mutated" zombies with unique behaviors. Examples included a spike-covered punk monster with spike arms, a big burned-up guy wearing chains, the obligatory fat vomiting monster, and—perhaps the most pro wrestling of all—a giant bridezilla monster near the end. (Which is the part most worth watching because I am not joking they 100% definitely used their elaborate zombie-gooping explosion physics on a cake.) We'll see if the campy tone can sustain Dead Island 2 when it releases on April 21, 2023(opens in new tab). And yes, for the record, that's one last release date change for a game that spent nine years in development hell(opens in new tab). link: https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/news/

Going into coalition is better than opposition, Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price said after his party backed getting into government as a means to achieve independence. Party members endorsed the plan at party conference on Saturday. The strategy suggests that after an election Plaid would aim to be at least a junior partner with a larger party in government. But Mr Price says the party's goal remains leading Wales. There have been debates for years in Plaid about how much the party should co-operate with Welsh Labour. Mr Price has ruled out any coalition with the Conservatives. Plaid is currently in a co-operation agreement with Mark Drakeford's Welsh government. Sack minister for health board crisis, says Plaid Plaid Cymru must do much better, leader admits Labour politician attacks Plaid co-operation deal Adam Price said there were three main points to the strategy: "Independence is our primary purposes as a party; the importance of being in government as a means to achieve that, and thirdly in order to become a party of government, we've got to broaden the base of support in all parts of Wales." Mr Price said "obviously" the party's goal remained leading a government in Wales. "But when it's not possible in one step to become the leading party, then it's still better to be in government as a partner with others than the alternative, which is to have no influence at all in opposition." Plaid members agreed the strategy at a special conference in Llanelli which was closed to the media. It has not released the strategy publicly. The conference follows a string of allegations of a toxic culture and misconduct within the party, with Mr Price telling delegates on Friday that the party must do better. Earlier, the party's health spokesman Rhun ap Iorwerth called for Mark Drakeford to sack his Health Minister Eluned Morgan over the crisis at Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board. link: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-politics-64848068

Researchers in New Zealand have unearthed fossils from two previously unknown ancient penguin species. One of the new species is the largest penguin ever discovered. Scientists have unearthed the fossilized remains of the largest ever known penguin on Earth, a 340-pound (154 kilograms) behemoth that glided through the oceans around what is now New Zealand more than 50 million years ago. The fossils of this newfound species, Kumimanu fordycei, were found alongside eight other specimens inside beach boulders in North Otago, on New Zealand's South Island. Five of the remaining specimens belonged to another newfound species, Petradyptes stonehousei, one belonged to another known giant penguin, Kumimanu biceae, and two were unidentified. The rocks dated to between 59.5 million and 55.5 million years ago. In a study, published Feb. 8 in the Journal of Paleontology(opens in new tab), researchers estimated the weight of the two newfound species based on the size and density of their bones compared with those of modern penguins. The team found that P. stonehousei weighed around 110 pounds (50 kilograms), which is slightly above the weight of living emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri). K. fordeycei would have weighed more than three times that, tipping the scales at a whopping 340 pounds. For comparison, the average 20-year-old man in the U.S. weighs 198 pounds (90 kg), according to Healthline(opens in new tab). (Without a near-complete skeleton, the researchers weren't able to estimate the body length of the new species.) "According to our analyses, K. fordycei is the biggest penguin currently known," study first author Daniel Ksepka(opens in new tab), a palaeontologist and curator at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut, told Live Science in an email. Related: Kids discover giant penguin's fossil skeleton in New Zealand Previously, the largest penguin on record was Palaeeudyptes klekowskii, which lived around 37 million years ago in Antarctica, weighed 256 pounds (116 kg) and stood at around 6.6 feet (2 meters) tall, earning it the nickname "colossus penguin." The next largest, K. biceae, weighed around 267 pounds (121 kg) and had a body length of around 5.8 feet (1.8 m). The two new species were likely among some of the first ancient penguins. The new discovery could shed light on how the group evolved over time. The new species had "relatively primitive flipper bones," Ksepka said. "In many ways [they] resemble those of birds that can both fly through the air and propel themselves underwater with their wings, such as auks and puffins." (But neither of the new species could fly.) Penguins likely lost the ability to fly in favor of swimming around 60 million years ago, not long before the new species likely emerged. So these early penguins had not yet evolved the super-efficient flippers seen in younger ancient penguins and their living relatives. The enormous size of K. fordycei shows that gigantism evolved early on in the penguin lineage, Ksepka said. "It goes to show that the advantages of large size, such as more efficient thermoregulation and diving, probably exerted very strong selective pressure on penguins soon after they lost flight." The unique environmental conditions of ancient New Zealand played a key role in the emergence and success of giant penguins, the researchers speculate. Related: Noodle-necked swimming dinosaur may have been a diving predator like a penguin "New Zealand is (and has been) a great place to be a penguin," Ksepka said. "There are good feeding grounds offshore for marine birds, and there were no land mammals other than bats in New Zealand before humans arrived, which makes for safer nesting areas." Giant penguins like K. fordcyei disappeared around 27 million years ago, according to Australian Geographic(opens in new tab). What caused their extinction is still an "unresolved question," but it is likely that the enormous birds were eventually outcompeted by marine mammals of similar size, Kspeka said. K. fordcyei may be the largest known penguin so far, but it's possible that even larger birds roamed New Zealand. "The size of K. fordcyei doesn't necessarily mean there wasn't an even larger species that is yet to be discovered," Ksepka said. link: https://www.livescience.com/largest-penguin-ever-discovered-weighed-a-whopping-340-pounds-fossils-reveal

They've had a personalized 'Garage' feature for years, but now you can get OEM parts delivered straight to you or your local mechanic. Amazon shoppers who need replacement parts or vehicle accessories now have an easier way to get what they need in the new OEM Automotive Parts Shop. The personalization is integrated with Amazon Garage, which Amazon started in 2006 and has been growing by 20 percent a year since 2020. Once you've found what you're looking for, you can have the part delivered, pick it up, or send it to a local service provider that will be listed on Amazon's site. Amazon has launched a new OEM Automotive Parts Shop that can share your clicking habits with your local dealer to ensure you get the part you need for your specific vehicle. The new shopping feature lets customers find official OEM parts using filters for most vehicle types, from cars, SUVs, and trucks to ATVs, motorcycles, and scooters. The trick lies in how Amazon now offers hundreds of thousands of parts and accessories in connection with local car dealerships. The new Shop allows far more than letting people sell parts on Amazon and mail them out. Amazon's new OEM Automotive Parts Shop is like a middleman between someone who needs to find the correct oil filter and that filter sitting on the shelf of a local dealer. Amazon said the new Parts Shop displays "transparent price listings for each item, as well as detailed product and fitment information directly from manufacturers and sellers to ensure they are purchasing the right product." Amazon said its collaboration with automakers means that selling partners, including dealerships, can now offer discounts to both local and national customers. So, with your 5 percent coupon in hand, Amazon can now ship the filter to your door or to a nearby service provider listed right there on the product page. Other options include in-store, with same-day pickup available in some situations. SHOP AT AMAZON'S OEM PARTS STORE Amazon launched its Garage feature in 2006, allowing customers to enter their vehicle information and filter shopping results by their make and model. Amazon Garage also allows customers to reorder parts and track service recommendations. This personalized functionality encouraged Amazon to work with automakers to integrate their parts supply and local dealers on this updated Shop. "Since 2020, we've seen an average 20 percent increase annually in the number of vehicles U.S. customers have saved in the Amazon Garage, showing a clear customer interest in shopping for parts and accessories for their vehicles similar to the way they shop for other consumer products," Ernie Linsay, Amazon's director of automotive, told Car and Driver. "This inspired us to collaborate with OEMs to enhance the overall selection available to customers online." The OEM Shop still needs to be polished. The brand list, for example, doesn't include some companies, like Tesla and Mini. Tesla isn't a part of the Amazon deal, but Mini is. In fact, a separate Mini section is currently promoted at the top of the screen, and Mini parts are available under the BMW filter. We feel ya, Mini drivers. link: https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a43190748/amazons-new-car-parts-shop/

Sam, 29, a therapist, meets Yolanta, 31, advertising creative Sat 4 Mar 2023 06.00 GMT Sam on Yolanta What were you hoping for? A fun evening and good conversation. First impressions? Stunning, great smile and worth the wait! She was a little late … What did you talk about? Lots, we were there for four hours. Yolanta’s ever growing list of talents: Danish stool making, scriptwriting, painting, magazine and film editing. And the time she met the Queen. Most awkward moment? I was quite early, and she was a little late, so I spent a fair while sat at the table alone wondering if I was about to be stood up for a Blind Date. Good table manners? Impeccable. Best thing about Yolanta? She seems to be someone who isn’t afraid to try new things, and when she does she really goes for them. Would you introduce Yolanta to your friends? Yes. Describe Yolanta in three words. Intelligent, engaging, beautiful. What do you think Yolanta made of you? Strong eyebrows apparently … I think that’s a good thing? Did you go on somewhere? No, she had a 5am wake up for a shoot. I walked her to the station. And … did you kiss? No. If you could change one thing about the evening what would it be? I would have dressed up a little more. (I live on a boat and can’t power an iron so felt a little scruffy.) Marks out of 10? 9. Loses a point for the late arrival, but otherwise a great evening. Would you meet again? Yes, we exchanged numbers. Q&A Fancy a blind date? Show Yolanta on Sam Yolanta on her date. What were you hoping for? Someone creative with a similar love for film, art and making things. And putting myself out there to meet someone new. First impressions? I was 10 minutes late and he was very early, but he was so nice and didn’t make me feel bad about it. He had a calming energy and was easy to talk to. What did you talk about? He’s travelled to some really awesome places and so have I. Fixing up his houseboat, which looks epic. My love for courses – I showed him my scar from a recent woodworking class. Most awkward moment? Maybe the odd silence between conversations but it felt comfortable. Good table manners? We were as bad as each other: we didn’t take ourselves too seriously. Best thing about Sam? He came across as a lovely person. Would you introduce Sam to your friends? My friends are inquisitive and emotionally intelligent, so they’d get on like a house on fire. Describe Sam in three words. Adventurous. Kind. Empathic. What do you think Sam made of you? I hope he also had a good time. Did you go on somewhere? No, but he walked me to the station in the freezing cold, which was sweet. Bruno and Lydia. Russian and Ukrainian forces are fighting in the streets of Bakhmut - but Russia does not control the eastern city, its deputy mayor has said. Oleksandr Marchenko also told the BBC the remaining 4,000 civilians are living in shelters without access to gas, electricity or water. Mr Marchenko said "not a single building" had remained untouched and that the city is "almost destroyed". Bakhmut has seen months of fighting, as Russia tries to take charge. "There is fighting near the city and there are also street fights," Mr Marchenko said. Taking the city would be a rare battlefield success in recent months for Russia. But despite that, the city's strategic value has been questioned. Some experts say any Russian victory could be pyrrhic - that is, not worth the cost. Thousands of Russian troops have died trying to take Bakhmut, which had a pre-war po[CENSORED]tion of around 75,000. Ukrainian commanders estimate that Russia has lost seven times as many soldiers as they have. On Saturday, UK military intelligence said Russian advances in the northern suburbs had left the Ukraine-held sections vulnerable to Russian attacks on three sides. Mr Marchenko accused the Russians of having "no goal" to save the city and that it wanted to commit "genocide of the Ukrainian people". "Currently there is no communication in the city so the city is cut out, the bridges are destroyed and the tactics the Russians are using is the tactic of parched land," Mr Marchenko told the Today programme. The fall of Bakhmut has long been predicted, but for more than six months it hasn't happened. So any reports of potential Ukrainian withdrawal should be treated with caution. It is hard to know what is going on without independent sources. Both sides have a greater incentive to confuse their enemy than provide accurate information. But it may be that Ukrainian commanders are beginning to calculate that the cost of defending Bakhmut - in terms of blood and treasure - is now too great, despite the grievous losses being inflicted on Russian troops. And if so, then they might want what Western analysts call "a controlled fighting withdrawal" to protect the remaining Ukrainian forces so they can be redeployed. But any withdrawal may be hard fought and could take some time. Earlier this week, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the situation in the area was becoming "more and more difficult" - although the Ukrainian military said it had repelled numerous attacks since Friday. "I believe we shouldn't give any inch of our land to the enemy," Mr Marchenko said. "We should protect our land, we should protect our people and we should protect the businesses that are on this land." The city was "almost destroyed", with bridges ruined and communication cut off, Mr Marchenko added. "They want to destroy Bakhmut, they want to destroy the city like they did with Mariupol and Popasna," he said, referring to two cities in the east of Ukraine now under Russian control. The Russian military laid siege to the south-eastern port city of Mariupol at the outset of the invasion and took control after three months of artillery bombardment that killed thousands. Russia claimed the Donbas town of Soledar, about 10km (6.2 miles) from Bakhmut, in January following a long battle with the Ukrainian forces. Soledar, too, was reportedly reduced to a wasteland of flattened buildings and rubble by the time the Ukrainian army retreated. On Friday, President Zelensky stressed that artillery and shells were needed to "stop Russia". US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the country's latest package included high-precision Himars artillery rockets and howitzers "which Ukraine is using so effectively". link: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-64846666

Droughts and low rainfalls affected the entire region, Morocco saw production 60% below the average. Rabat - Morocco recorded the largest decrease in cereal production in North Africa in 2022, the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization’s quarterly report showed. North Africa’s aggregate cereal production for 2022 is estimated at 33 million tonnes, 10% below the region’s previous five-year average. The aggregate wheat harvest suffered the most, dropping to 16.6 million tonnes, almost 20% below the average. Morocco’s output was estimated at nearly 3.3 million tonnes, a sharp 60% decrease from the average. The report attributes the decrease to the drought that the country experienced in 2022. Throughout the year, Morocco suffered its worst drought in decades, heavily affecting its rain-reliant yet vitally important agriculture field. The FAO estimated that the region’s aggregate cereal import requirements stand at 51 million tonnes in the 2022-23 year, an increase of 2% from the average in order to compensate for the reduced production. Part of those imports would also go into states’ reserves, to prepare better for similar future situations. The reduced output has naturally had an effect on food prices in the region, with food price inflation continuing to increase at high levels in most of the region, with Libya being the sole exception. In Morocco, annual food inflation increased to over 10% by June 2022, before reaching a record 15.5% in December of the same year. The inflation rate was second only to Egypt’s staggering 48% by January 2023. Food prices have been rising recently as several crises disrupted global production and supply chains. Just as the world was emerging from the COVID-19 crisis which had significantly affected purchasing powers, the Russia-Ukraine war caused another spike as the two countries were significant exporters of grains and cereals. The FAO report notes that a substantial improvement in cereal and wheat crops in 2023 is still feasible should weather conditions improve throughout the rest of the year. link: https://www.moroccoworldnews.com/2023/03/354305/morocco-records-largest-cereal-production-decrease-in-north-africa

Wales' health minister says she has read the "riot act" to some executives at a troubled health board. Eluned Morgan has been under pressure after putting Betsi Cadwaladr into special measures for a second time. She said she wanted to see "next steps" to "follow through" on the findings of an audit report, which last week found the executive team was dysfunctional. Her decision on Monday triggered a row after she asked all of the health board's independent members to quit. It raised questions as to why board members, who say they had raised concerns about the NHS organisation with ministers themselves, had been targeted instead of executives. She told the Senedd a "process" would be followed with the executives who had legal rights to be respected, but she did not say what the process would be. It comes after Ms Morgan told BBC Wales earlier on Tuesday that ex-Betsi Cadwaladr independent board members could not "shrug off" responsibility for how the service is run. She said she lacked powers to make top managers quit but could intervene with independent board members. Those board members say her actions expose patients to "significant risk". Betsi Cadwaladr was already under "targeted intervention" from the Welsh government in a range of areas, including mental health services. Just two years ago it came out of special measures, after 1,996 days of being under more direct Welsh government oversight. In defending herself against opposition claims that she has sacked the wrong people, Eluned Morgan told the Senedd she doesn't have the power to get rid of senior executives at Betsi because she is not their employer. However she repeatedly dropped heavy hints that she expected action to be taken by the newly appointed independent board members. The first minister made a similar point in First Minister's Questions: "The fact that those actions were not taken yesterday should not be taken as meaning that no action will be taken at all. It's just that things have to be done in a way that respects people's legal rights and in a way that would stand up to external scrutiny." So what could that action be? The Clwyd South Labour MS Ken Skates inferred it could mean "huge change potentially within the executive team possibly further into middle management". The health minister remains under fire, but she may be safer in her job than some of the senior executive staff at Betsi. 2px presentational grey line Last week, Audit Wales called the health board's senior executive team dysfunctional, following a recent string of failings, including on vascular and emergency services. It is led by a group of executive directors, responsible for the day-to-day operation of services, and independent board members there to scrutinise their decisions. In a stormy session of the Senedd Eluned Morgan said: "I can assure you that I very much read the riot act to some of those executives. "I do not have the power to require executives to step down. I do not employ these people. "They have legal rights that need to be respected, later adding: "There will be a process and they need to understand that process, I'm sure, will be followed." No improvement at health board, claim relatives £122m fraud investigation launched at health board She said she had stepped in with the board "when I don't think they've done the job that I needed them to do, which was partly to hold the executive to account, to take the next step, which they'd identified, and that didn't happen". Ms Morgan told Senedd members she had asked officials to set up a group to look at how ministers can "improve accountability" across the Welsh NHS as a whole. 'Appalling' Welsh Conservative north Wales spokesman Darren Millar told the minister: "It's within the executive team that this [Audit Wales] report points to these problems, not with the independent board members who you forced to resign yesterday." He said it was "appalling". "I think it's about time that we have mechanisms in Wales to remove people like that, who do not accept their responsibility for failures when things go wrong." Rhun ap Iorwerth, health Spokesman for Plaid Cymru, said the health board "has to go", reiterating calls for reorganisation. "She tells us that breaking it up would be wrong when we are encouraging regional co-operation - Betsi can't even co-operate with itself." "Let's have a fresh start," he added. The former independent board members have said in a letter to the first minister that they had "no confidence" in the Welsh government's grasp of the situation. Earlier, on BBC Radio Wales, Ms Morgan said it was not her "job to have a grasp on things" and the independent board "was in charge". "It wasn't my job to have a grasp on things, they were in charge," Ms Morgan told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast on Tuesday. "They can't shrug off the responsibility and say it's my responsibility. We've had concerns about the health board for a while. "The straw that broke the camel's back was that Audit Wales report that made it very clear that the board was dysfunctional and, although there is a huge amount of criticism of the executive, with the current board it was clear that the relationships had broken down to such an extent that it didn't look they were able to make to make the changes that were necessary in the health board." As part of the changes chairman Mark Polin has been replaced by former Gwynedd council leader Dyfed Edwards. In their letter, the former independent board members alleged that responsibility for organisational culture, service quality and delivery "have been placed at our door without recognition of the limitation of our powers as independent members". "The response to the Audit Wales report, and her focus on independent members rather than the operational executive and their delivery, exposes patients across north Wales, and the organisation to significant risk going forward," they said. Last week, the Auditor General Adrian Crompton alleged that the executive team suffered from "dysfunctionality and factions". He said independent members had scrutinised executives publicly, but that was seen as "hostile and inappropriate" by some. link: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-politics-64798137

Mama orcas are forgoing having more young and instead dote on their existing sons. Killer whale mothers are sacrificing their own reproductive prospects to guarantee the future success of their sons. While it's no surprise that mothers make sacrifices for their young, researchers have found that orca (Orcinus orca) mothers are taking the mama's boy notion to the extreme, continuing to care for their sons into adulthood, even if it affects their future chances of reproduction, according to a new study published Feb. 8 in the journal Current Biology(opens in new tab). Researchers have found that this doting mother-son relationship is true amongst the 73 resident orcas that currently make up the "southern resident" po[CENSORED]tion, a group that inhabits the waters off the coasts of Washington state and British Columbia. Since 1976, researchers from the Center for Whale Research in Harbor, Washington, have been monitoring this well-studied po[CENSORED]tion and noticed this "bizarre social system" where the mothers continue to hunt for their adult sons, according to a statement(opens in new tab). Because orca groups are matrilineal, "both the sons and daughters stay within their mom's group for their whole lives in this po[CENSORED]tion of killer whales — and we think in most resident killer whale po[CENSORED]tions," first author Michael Weiss, research director for the Center for Whale Research, told Live Science. "But the sons especially keep strong social ties with their mothers and are more likely to follow their moms around." While sticking with their moms may prove beneficial for the males, the daughters, on the other hand, are cut off entirely from prey sharing by their moms once they reach sexual maturity, typically sometime between 6 and 10 years of age, according to the statement. Related: Pod of orcas frees a humpback whale from certain death. Was it intentional? So, why are mom orcas giving their sons preferential treatment and not their daughters? Researchers think it all comes down to an evolutionary cost/benefit analysis. "Males are quite a bit bigger than females, so they need more calories and are also a little less maneuverable, so they may have less luck catching fish," Weiss said. "From the mom's point of view, there are some good reasons why they might want to preferentially help their sons. When daughters reproduce, their calf is in the same group as the grandma, and that means there's another mouth to feed in the group that might compete with the female's other offspring. So, there's a cost there to helping your daughter reproduce. Whereas with males, when they have their kids, they're usually born in someone else's group." He added, "You get the same benefits in terms of evolution, with your genes being passed on to the next generation, without the cost of having another mouth to feed." However, this coddling of males costs the mothers in the long run. Researchers found a "strong negative correlation" between females' caring for their grown sons and their probability of producing a viable calf. Each surviving son cuts a mother's chances of having a new calf by more than 50% in a given year, according to the statement. "As an example, a 21-year-old female who doesn't have any kids she's taking care of right now and hasn't reproduced in the previous year, has about a 1 in 5 chance of having a calf," Weiss said. "If that female has one son that she's taking care of, that chance drops to a 1 in 10 chance. By taking care of these sons, the mothers have less of the food resources they need to carry these really costly pregnancies, which makes them much less likely to further reproduce.” link: https://www.livescience.com/orca-males-are-burnouts-who-let-their-moms-do-all-the-hunting-surprising-study-finds
