  1. Tata Motors is on a path of transformation. The Indian carmaker wants to move away from its old-school rickety style to a modern marquee. And the shift is underway with the introduction of successful products like the Tiago and Nexon. Now Tata is working on an all-new premium hatchback which is codenamed ‘Project 45X ’. The premium hatchback will be showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo at least in the concept guise. The all-new hatchback will be the first car to be built on the Advanced Modular Platform (AMP) that has been developed by Tata Motors. Looking at the images that we have at our disposal, it is evident that the 45X will be styled quite similar to the Tiago, but we hope it gets some brawn from the Hexa as well. In terms of size, the 45X is visually longer than the Tiago but Tata will certainly not go over four metres in length to benefit from the tax regulations. Tata’s first AMP-based car is expected to debut in late 2018 and we think the 45X might debut at the Auto Expo in February, at least in the concept form. There are information with regards to the cabin and powertrain available at the moment. However, we expect the premium hatchback to pack in the modern interior as we have seen in the new Nexon. The floating screen, with smartphone connectivity, airbags with ABS, and climate control will be part of the long equipment list as well. Under the hood might be the same 1.2-litre turbocharged Revotron Petrol engine along with the 1.5-litre diesel engine that debuted with the Nexon earlier this year. When launched in the country, the 45X will compete against the likes of the Maruti Baleno, Hyundai i20, Honda Jazz and Volkswagen Polo in the B+ segment. This segment is highly competitive at the moment due to the segment shift and Tata needs to burn the midnight oil if it wants a large piece of pie in this segment dominated by the Baleno. It will be produced at Tata's Sanand facility in Gujarat.
  2. Arvo Pärt's music offered consolation during some of the darkest moments of the 1980s. As Tabula Rasa, a collaborative show by Vanishing Point and Scottish Ensemble featuring his music, comes exclusively to BBC iPlayer, we reveal the soothing power of this piece and others. Patrick Giles was a crisis worker for an AIDS charity in the 1980s, constantly losing people he knew to the disease. Life, he found, was devoid of hope. During this dark time a glimmer of comfort for those affected came from an unusual source – the music of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. He later reflected: "Tabula Rasa's relentlessly severe, repetitive and deeply inspiring sound had a powerful impact on my dying friends and their attendants. 'It sounds like the motion of angels' wings,' a client whom I had a secret crush on once said. "The music brought comfort to many of us after we'd given up on the very possibility of it. People played it at night, during meditation and, especially, when they were in the hospital and feared they were dying. We had learned that even patients in comas were still capable of hearing, and several people with AIDS requested Pärt on their death beds." Giles' words were later recalled by music critic Alex Ross in The New Yorker. The article sparked something for theatre maker Matthew Lenton. Lenton said: "There is a lot of silence and space in Arvo Pärt’s work, and you can really put yourself into gaps between the notes. The question was, what can I add to the music? [In the article] I found the 'hook' which would enable Vanishing Point to give theatrical context to the music. "It made me think about the role music, and more broadly art, plays in our lives and the offer one person makes to another when they offer care – especially within a care system." Lenton is far from the only person who continues to be inspired by Pärt’s music, as Scottish Ensemble blogger in residence Rosie Davies discovered during a deep dive into the YouTube comments on his music. Watch the powerful show Tabula Rasa Inspired by and featuring the music of Arvo Pärt. Tabula Rasa It made me think about the role music plays in our lives, especially within a care system Matthew Lenton But the show is not purely Lenton's vision. His theatre company Vanishing Point worked with string orchestra Scottish Ensemble to create Tabula Rasa, including an intense development week at Glasgow's Tramway, where participants covered a range of topics from their beliefs about social care, to the concept of snow, to T.K. Maxx. For Lenton, working in close collaboration with Scottish Ensemble played a major role in getting Tabula Rasa into shape. He said: "The musicians all had ideas about the form of the show and its subject matter and were willing to try many different approaches. It really helped me see what the show could be and what it could not be. "Importantly they also took the actors and me through the mechanics of the music, explaining how it is structured and how something so simple can seem and feel so complex." Arvo Pärt on BBC Music A fascinating musical journey Learn more about the distinctive Estonian composer. A fascinating musical journey Mindful alternatives When researching the concept of mindfulness, the Scottish Ensemble played for people using the services of the Maggie's Centre in Dundee, an institution which offers support to people with cancer and those caring for them. Following the performance of a number of pieces, they discussed the effect that listening to the music had on their emotions.

  3. te and place of Ms Meng's arrest and added: "She is sought for extradition by the United States, and a bail hearing has been set for Friday." It said it could not say more as Ms Meng had sought a ban on the publication of details and this had been ordered by the courts. A spokesman for the US justice department in the Eastern District of New York - which Huawei said had brought the charges - declined to comment. What could be behind it? US media have reported that Huawei is under investigation for potential violations of US sanctions against Iran. One report in the New York Times said the US commerce and treasury departments had subpoenaed the firm over suspected violation of sanctions against both Iran and North Korea. US lawmakers have repeatedly accused the company of being a threat to US national security, arguing that its technology could be used for spying by the Chinese government. Reacting to the arrest, US Senator Ben Sasse told Associated Press that China was aggressively engaged in undermining US national security interests, often "using private sector entities". "Americans are grateful that our Canadian partners have arrested the chief financial officer," he added. How have China and Huawei responded? Huawei said Ms Meng, the daughter of founder Ren Zhengfei, was detained while transferring between flights. In a statement, it said it had complied with "all applicable laws and regulations where it operates, including applicable export control and sanction laws and regulations of the UN, US and EU. "The company believes the Canadian and US legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion." A statement from the Chinese embassy in Canada was far angrier. It said that Canada, at the request of the US, had arrested a Chinese citizen "not violating any American or Canadian law". "The Chinese side has lodged stern representations with the US and Canadian side, and urged them to immediately correct the wrongdoing and restore the personal freedom of Ms Meng Wanzhou." Why is Huawei a concern to the West? The company is one of the largest telecommunications equipment and services providers in the world, recently passing Apple to become the second-biggest smartphone maker after Samsung. Some Western governments fear Beijing will gain access to fifth-generation (5G) mobile and other communications networks through Huawei and expand its spying ability, although the firm insists there is no government control. Security concerns recently led BT to bar Huawei equipment from the heart of the 5G network it is rolling out in the UK. New Zealand has blocked Huawei equipment over national security concerns, after Australia imposed a similar ban on both Huawei and fellow communications firm ZTE. The US has brought a number of legal cases against Chinese technology firms, with accusations such as cyber-security theft and violations of Iran sanctions. Earlier this year, it barred US companies from exporting to ZTE, effectively shutting down the firm. The US later replaced the ban with a fine and governance changes. The US has also restricted US firms from selling parts to Chinese chipmaker Fujian Jinhua. What are the Iran sanctions? Donald Trump last month reinstated all the US sanctions on Iran that had been removed under a 2015 nuclear deal. Trump re-imposes Iran sanctions: Now what? Iran nuclear deal: Key details Mr Trump had been fiercely opposed to the deal, which saw Iran limit its controversial nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. The re-imposed sanctions hit oil exports, shipping and banks - indeed all core parts of Iran's economy. Although there are some waivers, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has said the US will "aggressively" target any firm or organisation "evading our sanctions".

  5. Fortnite developer Epic is not too pleased with the way in which Google publicly disclosed a security vulnerability with the game’s Android installer. Rather than pay the 30 percent cut which Google takes from distributing games through its Play Store, Epic decided to bypass the official app store in favour of its own installer. Sideloading games poses an increased risk to consumers as it bypasses many of Google’s protections. In fact, users have to manually agree to the risks before Android will allow the installation of apps from third-party sources. Many security experts warned of the potential dangers of Epic distributing Fortnite in this way, especially since many of its players are young and potentially more susceptible to installing fake copies of the game. Google highlighted a vulnerability that affected the official installer whereby a ‘Man-In-The-Disk’ attack could be carried out. The file would appear legitimate, but the APK would be swapped for modified software that poses a risk just before it’s installed. When it discovers a bug, Google’s policy is to alert the relevant parties and give them 90 days to fix it before it’s shared with the defense community. If it’s fixed sooner, Google will also share the vulnerability sooner. Epic fixed the problem the very next day and so Google shared details of its findings. It’s likely Google was eager to share its findings to warn others of the dangers of bypassing the Play Store. However, Epic was not happy with the disclosure as older – still vulnerable – versions of the Fortnite for Android installer would still be around. In a comment to Mashable, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney wrote: “Epic genuinely appreciated Google's effort to perform an in-depth security audit of Fortnite immediately following our release on Android, and share the results with Epic so we could speedily issue an update to fix the flaw they discovered. However, it was irresponsible of Google to publicly disclose the technical details of the flaw so quickly, while many installations had not yet been updated and were still vulnerable. An Epic security engineer, at my urging, requested Google delay public disclosure for the typical 90 days to allow time for the update to be more widely installed. Google refused. You can read it all at https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/112630336 Google's security analysis efforts are appreciated and benefit the Android platform, however, a company as powerful as Google should practice more responsible disclosure timing than this, and not endanger users in the course of its counter-PR efforts against Epic's distribution of Fortnite outside of Google Play.” The vulnerability specifically affected devices by Epic’s launch partner for Fortnite on Android, Samsung. Epic’s installer uses a "private Galaxy Apps API" on Samsung which stores the downloaded file in Android's publicly-accessible external storage. In its bug report, Google notes that “using a private internal storage directory rather than external storage would help avoid this vulnerability." Given that Samsung's API only checks that the APK being installed matches the package name ‘com.epicgames.fortnite’, a modified copy is able to be swapped in. Even worse, if the fake APK has a targetSdkVersion of 22 (Android 5.1 Lollipop) or lower, then all permissions it asks for at install will be granted without the user's knowledge. Earlier this month, Developer reported on a measure implemented by Google to warn users against fakes of Play Store-bypassing apps like Fortnite. What are your thoughts on the spat between Google and Epic Games regarding Fortnite on Android? Let us know in the comments.

  10. Ukraine has accused Russia of ramming one of its boats off the coast of the annexed Crimea, amid rising tensions. The "openly aggressive actions" occurred as three of its vessels sailed from the Black Sea port of Odessa to Mariupol in the Sea of Azov, Kiev said. Ukraine's Yana Kapu tug suffered damage to its engine, the Ukrainian navy said. Russia said the ships were in its waters, accusing Kiev of "provocative actions". It later blocked access to the Sea of Azov with a tanker. The tanker was placed under the Russian-built bridge that spans the narrow Kerch Strait - the only access to the sea. Tensions have risen in the seas off the Crimean peninsula - annexed by Russia in 2014 - in recent months. Eastern Ukraine: A new, bloody chapter Ukraine names Russia as 'aggressor' state What are the latest developments? The Ukrainian navy said in a statement that its boats - two gunboats and the tug - were now being monitored by two Russian helicopters scrambled by Moscow. Two Russian fighter jets were also seen flying low over the huge arch of the bridge, which Russia constructed earlier this year. The Ukrainian navy said the boats were waiting to cross into the Sea of Azov through the Kerch Strait, which Russia had shut off. Russia said the traffic was suspended for security reasons. Meanwhile, a Russian FSB security service official was quoted by Ria Novosti news agency as saying that Ukraine had sent naval reinforcements to the area. Russia earlier said the Ukrainian vessels - two small warships named as the Berdyansk and the Nikopol, and the tug - were trying "to create a conflict situation in this region" after they left Odessa. The ships "illegally entered a temporarily closed area of Russian territorial waters", the FSB reportedly said in a statement. But Ukraine said it had informed the Russians of its plan to move its ships through the sea to Mariupol. The navy statement said the Russian actions marked a breach of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. In recent weeks, a Ukrainian vessel was escorted by Russian tugs under the bridge in the Kerch Strait without an incident. What's the background to this? The shallow Sea of Azov lies east of Crimea, and south of the Ukrainian regions partially seized by pro-Russian separatists. In 2003, Ukraine and Russia signed a treaty on the Sea of Azov, which defined it as internal waters of the two countries. The treaty guaranteed free navigation to all Ukrainian and Russian vessels.
