Turn the raw processing power of your Raspberry Pi into a Bitcoin Full Node with this awesome Raspberry Pi Bitcoin node project. It was developed and shared by Howchoo's Tyler Jones just earlier this week. Jones decided to use the 4GB model of the Raspberry Pi 4 to operate as the main board of the project. Though this isn't the most powerful option, it meets the minimum requirements to run a Bitcoin Full Node. One of the biggest hurdles you'll face is storage space. Most Pi users run the OS on a microSD card which doubles as internal storage. Unless you've got a huge microSD card, you'll need to up your storage situation. Jones decided to use an external hard drive and explains how to configure it to work with the Pi in his project breakdown. Whatever you decide to use, you'll need more than 350GB to house the entire Bitcoin blockchain. The project runs on Raspberry Pi OS. The main application used is called bitcoind—this is the official Bitcoin Core daemon. Jones is using the Bitcoin Core for ARM Linux on the Raspberry Pi. Check out the Raspberry Pi Bitcoin Full Node project on Howchoo for more details, pictures and a complete breakdown of how this project is put together.

Auto work is typically remembered as one of the best industrial jobs a worker could get in postwar America. Less remembered, however, is how absolutely brutal and violent life on the auto factory floor was — and still is. he way we typically remember post–World War II industrial work like auto manufacturing might include it being repetitive, maybe unpleasant, but stable and well-paying, making decent lives possible for enormous numbers of workers in the United States. But that’s only part of the story. It also included incredible amounts of violence, as labor historian Jeremy Milloy chronicles in Blood, Sweat, and Fear: Violence at Work in the North American Auto Industry, 1960-80. Milloy argues that violence on the factory floor saturated the entire production process of American and Canadian auto manufacturing, both in the work itself and in the interpersonal relations among workers and between workers and managers. The book is a strong challenge to prevailing nostalgic notions about the placid conditions of work at the height of twentieth-century industrial America — and raises questions about the omnipresent nature of violence at work under capitalism in any era. Jacobin deputy editor Micah Uetricht interviewed Milloy for the Jacobin Radio podcast The Vast Majority. You can listen to the episode here. The conversation has been edited for length and clarity. MU Before I read this book, I shared the prevailing views of mid-century American auto work: good jobs, well paid; maybe monotonous, but stable and decent. I have been thoroughly disabused of at least the notion that these jobs were somewhere between pleasant and benign after reading your book. JM That’s a historian’s job. We’re the “well, actually”-ers of humanities and social sciences. My book fits in with another recent book worth checking out, Daniel Clark’s Disruption in Detroit, which argues that these jobs weren’t that well-paying. Many workers were laid off constantly. They were always doing other jobs. Work was precarious, in ways that workers today would recognize. The ideal is that you go and clock in at General Motors at age twenty, you work thirty years, you get that pension, you get the boat on the lake. It was a grind, but you put two kids through college, and it was worth it. But it wasn’t worth it for a lot of people. These were violent workplaces. These were really terrible jobs, both in terms of monotony, being turned into a machine, being alienated from your job, but also for how dangerous they were. Your chance of being maimed or hurt, or having a heart attack on the job, or having a forklift flip over on you, or getting repetitive stress injuries — these were the different forms of violence workers had to deal with. Researching the book, there were times when I was thinking about these workplaces and saying to myself, “How are people just letting this go on? How did people not decide to close these factories down to get a handle on these factories?” Because the levels of violence were so endemic. Inside the Dodge Main plant. MU You emphasize that violence is inherent to the work process, independent from interpersonal violence happening on the factory floor. Can you describe that violence of the auto work itself? JM Much of the existing work on this subject focuses on interpersonal violence, painting violence as something that originates from workers’ psyches — they’re reacting to the unpleasant, dangerous work, or specific grievances with other workers, so from a psychological or industrial management point of view, employers ask, “How do you identify these kinds of violent people? How do you screen them out? How do you mollify them? How do you make sure that they don’t blow up?” I used a materialist approach. I looked at what is happening with the labor process. My work traces the rise and fall of violence at Chrysler in Detroit over a twenty-five-year period. It’s not that Chrysler hired a bunch of bad people beginning in the mid-1960s. That’s not an explanation of why violence skyrockets at that plant. It’s because the labor process changed. The labor process in auto has always had violence baked into it. There’s an enormous amount of injurious work, repetitive strain, risks of inhaling toxic fumes, risks of being maimed by a stamping press or a machine you’re using on the line. There’s a weight workers are carrying, the weight of that potential for violence against them. But the key driver of stress is the line itself: How fast is it moving? How fast are the workers thus expected to move to keep up with it? That’s the central dynamic of auto work. And that hasn’t changed. It’s a violent dynamic, and one that has conflict at its heart. The employer is always seeking to drive that line as fast as possible, and the workers are trying to survive it, with some semblance of dignity and enjoyment.

In votes on issues relating to agricultural products, the European Parliament said that so-called veggie burgers, soy steaks and vegan sausages can continue to be sold as such in restaurants and shops across the union. (Source: Getty Images/Thinkstock) Plant-based products that do not contain meat can continue to be labeled ‘sausages’ or ‘burgers’, European lawmakers said Friday, when they rejected a proposal back by the meat industry to ban the terms. In votes on issues relating to agricultural products, the European Parliament said that so-called veggie burgers, soy steaks and vegan sausages can continue to be sold as such in restaurants and shops across the union. On the opposite side of the debate, a group of 13 organisations including Greenpeace and WWF urged lawmakers to reject the proposed amendments, arguing that a ban would have not only exposed the EU to ridicule,” but also damaged its environmental credibility. They said promoting a shift toward more plant-based diet is in line with the EU Commission’s ambition to tackle global warming. Losing the ability to use the terms steak or sausage might make those plant-based products more obscure for consumers. After the vote, the European Consumer Organisation, an umbrella group bringing together consumers’ associations, praised the MEPs for their “common sense.” “Consumers are in no way confused by a soy steak or chickpea-based sausage, so long as it is clearly labelled as vegetarian or vegan,” the group said in a statement. “Terms such as ‘burger’ or ‘steak’ on plant-based items simply make it much easier for consumers to know how to integrate these products within a meal.” Together with Greenpeace, the group regretted that lawmakers accepted further restrictions on the naming of alternative products containing no dairy. Terms like ‘almond milk’ and ‘soy yogurt’ are already banned in Europe after the bloc’s top court ruled in 2017 that purely plant-based products can’t be marketed using terms such as milk, butter or cheese, which are reserved for animal products.

The console world is definitely changing, with manufacturers breaking down barriers and publishers leveraging the advantages that brings. Buried in its Ubisoft Connect announcement, the French publisher also announced that its future releases will support cross-progression, meaning your save data will be available on whichever platform you play on. Curiously, this function won’t begin with Watch Dogs: Legion, but Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, Immortals Fenyx Rising, and Riders Republic will all support it. “Cross-progression is a feature that allows you to carry your save data from one platform to the next,” the company explained. “All your game progression is saved within Ubisoft Connect, so you won’t lose a step if you change consoles or switch to PC.” To be fair, this is pretty cool, and something we hope will become more of a standard as the generation progresses. You can find out more about cross-play and which other games support cross-progression in our guide through here. What do you think of this new feature from forthcoming Ubisoft titles? Tesla sent out the first “Full Self-Driving” beta software update to a select group of customers this week, CEO Elon Musk tweeted Tuesday. On an earnings call Wednesday, Musk said more Tesla owners would get the update as the weeks progress, with the goal of a “wide release” by the end of the year. Only those customers in Tesla’s Early Access Program will receive the software update, that will enable drivers to access Autopilot’s partially automated driver assist system on city streets. The early access program is used as a testing platform to help iron out software bugs. Musk said that Tesla was approaching this software update “very cautiously” because the “world is a complex and messy place.” In a letter to investors, Tesla said its Autopilot team “has been focused on a fundamental architectural rewrite of our neural networks and control algorithms. This rewrite will allow the remaining driving features to be released.” This rewrite, Musk has said, will allow Tesla’s vehicles to interpret their environment in four dimensions rather than two, which should result in a dramatic improvement in performance and faster software updates. Autopilot can center a Tesla in a lane, even around curves, and adjust the car’s speed based on the vehicle ahead. The “Navigate on Autopilot” feature can suggest — and perform — lane changes to get around slower vehicles, and steer a Tesla toward highway interchanges and exits. Another feature can slow a Tesla to a stop at traffic lights and stop signs. The company has yet to allow its customers hands-off control of the vehicle at medium speeds, where they are more likely to encounter traffic signals, intersections, and other complexities. Autopilot can’t perform some of these tasks if a road’s lane markers are faded or missing, and it can’t make turns. The driver must have a hand on the wheel at all times, too, or else Autopilot will flash a series of warnings before ultimately disengaging entirely. But when those features work in concert, it can feel like the car is driving itself — but a driver is still liable if the car makes a mistake or crashes. (There have been a number of fatal crashes involving Tesla vehicles with Autopilot enabled.) On the call, Musk argued that Tesla’s self-driving advantage comes from having a large fleet of vehicles — around 930,000 — already on the road. Those cars record situations and provide training data to improve the neural networks needed for the artificial intelligence software that powers self-driving cars. The company’s approach to autonomous vehicles is primarily focused on computer vision, or using cameras — just like humans — to recognize and understand the world. “Having on the order of a million cars that are providing feedback, and specifically feedback on strange corner case situations that you just can’t even come up with in simulation — this is a thing that is really valuable,” Musk said.

In an upmarket stretch of south Delhi, lined with a row of nearly half-a-dozen automobile dealerships, the air is rife with nervousness. In front of the Maruti Suzuki outlet, about 25-30 cars lay parked. Cars heavily outnumber humans in most dealerships. The number of sales executives has steeply dropped following a pandemic-induced lockdown and nearly two years of bleak auto sales, but the absence of customers is starker, especially around this time of the year. “Many used to come in to enquire about the cars they want to purchase and even just to take pictures next to the cars they were interested in," said a Maruti sales executive, who did not wish to be named. New, pandemic-induced crowd control norms partly explain the lack of hustle and bustle (only 10 people are allowed to enter at a time and digital sale channels are seeing an uptick). But, more importantly, consumer interest remains depressed. “Physical enquiries by customers has improved but not as much as last year," the executive said. Manufacturers, though, are risking it all in anticipation of a surge in sales. Maruti Suzuki plans to manufacture a record 180,000 vehicles or more in October, while Hero MotoCorp will also produce around 800,000 units during the month, according to multiple sources. Already, in September, the local unit of Suzuki Motor Corp reported a 33.4% year-on-year growth in domestic wholesale sales to dealers (amounting to over 150,000 units). On a sequential, or month-on-month basis, Maruti’s factory dispatches have shot up from around 100,000 in July. Hero has also reported a 16.11% year-on-year rise in its domestic wholesale dispatches for September. Hyundai and other manufacturers, too, are headed down a similar path. Though India is still in the middle of a pandemic, more cars and two-wheelers are now being churned out of the factory floor than even last year. Naturally, showrooms are ballooning with new inventory. Whether and when these arrivals will turn into retail sales is the open question. For now, upstream players like manufacturers and dealers seem to be operating under the belief that an imminent turnaround in the long-depressed auto market is just around the corner. Perhaps, the festive sale wave can raise all boats, including auto? According to Vinkesh Gulati, an automobile dealer and president of the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations, the hope is that sales in some segments will touch at least the low base of last year. “Most of the stock building happened in September and companies are going for near record-level production in October. Though sales have been recovering, it’s difficult to match their (manufacturers’) level of buoyancy. Still, if retails match last year’s level, then, we should be fine," added Gulati. But, will it? Lockdown woes In the first week of May, when the Union government decided to gradually lift the lockdown measures which had been in place to control the spread of covid-19, automobile manufacturing companies struggled to operate their assembly lines as the supply chain and retail network was significantly disrupted by the months-long restrictions. In the subsequent months, though, top executives of leading vehicle manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, Hyundai Motor India Ltd and Hero Moto Corp Ltd chalked out plans to push production of vehicles to near-record levels by September and October ignoring the grim realities of the Indian economy, which is expected to shrink by nearly 10% in the current fiscal year, according to the estimates released the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The rationale behind such a sudden change in strategy was the expectation that retail sales will witness a robust turnaround during the Navaratri and Diwali festivals. Hence, almost all automakers are now in the process of replenishing the inventory at dealerships on a war footing. The hope is fuelled by a set of broad trends: Once lockdown was lifted, sales of entry-level motorcycles and small cars, in particular, recovered very quickly, indicating that a pronounced shift toward personal mobility, due to fear of crowded spaces, may indeed be underway; tractor sales have also seen a healthy uptick due to a decent monsoon; finally, while the urban market lagged for many months, early signs of revival started showing up in August. Incidentally, the lockdown in March also coincided with the auto industry’s transition to the more stringent Bharat Stage 6 emission norms. Hence, when operations restarted in May, most automakers’ inventories were depleted and production had to be increased to replenish the stocks. However, from September, high production levels don’t match the retails on the ground. Justifiably, some of the dealers are apprehensive that they might face acute financial pressure if retail sales don’t take place as per expectations. In most dealerships, the stocked inventory has by now stretched to 35-40 days’ worth of regular sale volumes. According to the retail vehicle sales data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations, showroom sales of the overall passenger vehicle segment increased by just 9.8% y-o-y in September even as two-wheeler sales declined by 12.6%. Building up of inventory is usual before the festival period, but given the current circumstances, if dealers are saddled with excess inventory by the end of November and beyond, then it might adversely impact their financials. According to a Maruti dealer based in Telangana, sales of small cars like Alto and S-Presso has increased in cities like Hyderabad and Chennai which was not the case earlier (as more expensive vehicles like Swift and Baleno were the preferred choices), indicating that a recovery on the back of a customer shift towards personal mobility could help boost sales of small cars as new customers enter the space. “Before covid, sales of Alto were not that great, but now sales of Alto has begun to peak. Also, sales of S-Presso has increased to more than 30 units per month compared to just 10-12 units earlier," said the dealer who requested anonymity. In addition to small cars, the shift towards personal mobility has also drawn somewhat well-off customers towards a niche class of more expensive offerings, especially in the sports utility vehicle segment—like Hyundai’s Venue (a compact SUV) and Creta (mid-size SUV). Retails of newcomer Kia Motors’ Seltos has also shown reasonable growth due to the evolving trend. Why season is important For the auto industry, vehicle sales during the year-end festive days constitute around a fourth of the overall annual volumes. But over the last two years, vehicle sales in Diwali and Navratri have remained subdued due to a prolonged economic slowdown. In FY20, sales of vehicles fell in the range of 15% to 25% across categories after reporting low single-digit growth in FY19. According to ratings agency Icra, sales of passenger vehicles will decline between 22% and 25% this fiscal too, while, for two-wheelers, it is likely to drop by 16-18%. Thus, the expectations driving the industry are in opposition to long-term trends and analyst predictions. Y S Guleria, director, sales and marketing, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Pvt Ltd, admits that it will be difficult to match even last year’s low base since the reason for a decline in sales this year is an unprecedented stagnation in economic growth, which is likely to be the worst in the history of independent India. Honda, though, has witnessed a 43% month-on-month jump in bookings in the first ten days of October, he says. “We are upbeat about sequential growth. There is a 75% surge in enquires and test rides over the last 15 days, which shows that anxiety levels among people is coming down. On the retail front, we are behind in double digits on a year-on-year basis and it will remain like that I think," added Gularia. Instead of pushing more inventory to dealers, Honda, the leading manufacturer of scooters, has adopted a “cash and carry" strategy, wherein, dealers who expect increased demand in their respective regions will have to pay in advance to book their vehicle dispatches. Due to subdued sales in the last two years, more than 300 dealerships in the country have shut shop and some are in the process of winding up as the covid-19 related economic downturn has further made businesses unviable. Media campaigns The big bets might, in effect, be entirely linked to the dire straits. If not this Diwali, then when? To back hope with some substance, auto firms have also decided to go on a marketing and promotional overdrive. All major auto manufacturers have planned new launches and facelifts of existing models and are expected to spend over ₹1,500 crore in advertising over the next two to three months as per estimates of leading media buyers. Television, print, outdoor, digital and experiential marketing always had a critical role to play in the automobile category, but under the current circumstances, the whole consumer buying journey is being reset. Most brands are now promoting the fact that they offer a contactless experience to customers, which includes virtual walk-arounds to demonstrate the vehicle’s feature, home delivery of vehicles for test drives, and even online ordering to some extent. “For the first time, there has also been a significant shift from print to digital platforms," said Sandeep Goyal, chairman, Mogae Media, a Mumbai-based marketing and communication agency. “Due to the pandemic scare, consumers are taking virtual test drives and looking for recommendations online. Therefore, companies have invested in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences to provide an idea of how a particular car model looks. The process of car buying is changing," he added. beyond festive season Notwithstanding the gradual recovery which was seen after the lockdown, top executives in auto firms and parts suppliers are concerned about a further contraction in demand after the festive season if there is no meaningful recovery in the wider economy and if a second wave of covid-19 infections begin to sweep through the country during the winter months. Auto sales started recovering initially due to pent-up demand and, subsequently, rural demand has supported a nascent recovery. But, almost 70-80% of auto sales, especially four-wheelers, are in the urban market, which is yet to recover and is most prone to further damage from a resurgence in covid cases. “To ascertain the robustness of the recovery, we have to see how the industry fares from January onwards. Auto industry depends on the economy and it will depend on the kind of stimulus on offer (to spur demand in the economy). It will take us almost three years to reach the three million mark again (which was the annual sales volume in 2017)," said Rajeev Chaba, president, M G Motor India. “Business will be fine till the festive season, but everyone is worried about what is in store after that, said a top executive in one of the leading component manufacturing firms who did not wish to be named. “We are possibly looking at a lean period from January. That’s the reason we are going to remain cautious on capital investments." Whether and when India’s auto dream run will begin again is not a question that will have to wait till 2021 though. The ongoing do-or-die push will provide a definitive answer perhaps as early as December. Saumya Tewari contributed to this story

Kashmiris have traditionally observed October 27 as a Black Day to mark the first landing of Indian troops in the Valley in 1947 to push back Pakistan-backed tribal invaders. But this year, in what appears to be an effort by the government to change that narrative, the Ministry of Culture is marking October 22 — the day the Pakistani invasion began and set the stage for the first India-Pakistan war — with a string of events, including a symposium in Srinagar on the events of that day. The lead-up to Oct 22 By October 1947, Kashmir was in high ferment. For months before the independence of India and the creation of Pakistan, Hari Singh, the Hindu ruler of Muslim-majority Kashmir, was facing a rebellion in Poonch by Muslim subjects who refused to pay taxes and launched an armed insurgency. Hari Singh deployed the Kashmir state forces to crack down. At the same time, with Partition nearing, Hindus and Sikhs had been crossing into Jammu, bringing with them stories of harrowing violence in Rawalpindi and other areas. Jammu had turned into a communal cauldron by the time anti-Muslim clashes broke out. There are varying versions of how many Muslims were killed, but most accounts speak of the riots as a massacre. At Independence, Hari Singh decided that Kashmir would not accede to either India or Pakistan. Instead, he made an offer of a standstill agreement with both, but only Pakistan signed. Pakistan took charge of Kashmir’s post and telegraphs and agreed to continue supplying essentials such as fuel and grains through West Punjab, now part of the new country. But as the clashes continued, the supplies from Pakistan dried up. Lack of petrol immobilised transport; Pakistan stopped the train service from Sialkot to Jammu; banking got disrupted. On the borders, bands of armed raiders were already launching hit-and-run attacks. The situation grew alarming for Hari Singh and his small army from about mid-October, and his cables to the Pakistan PM to put an end to the raids were rebuffed. 📣 Follow Express Explained on Telegram Oct 22 invasion & resistance On October 22, thousands of tribal invaders crossed into Kashmir overrunning outposts of Hari Singh’s state forces in Muzaffarabad, Domel and other places on the road to Srinagar. The Kashmir forces were too small in number. Plus, the Muslim soldiers, who were in equal numbers with the Dogras in the force, joined hands with the raiders. According to the Ministry of Defence’s official history of the war, “The plan of the invaders was tactfully sound and, in the beginning, brilliantly executed. The main attack had to be frontally launched along the motor road. Apart from the rifles, the standard weapon of the raiders, the main force had also a few light machine guns and travelled in about 300 civilian lorries.” One of the most significant episodes was the attack on Baramulla on the night of October 26-27. The targeting of St Joseph’s Convent and Hospital on October 27 and the killings on its premises are documented by British journalist Andrew Whitehead in A Mission in Kashmir. Various accounts of the invasion have explained why the Pashtun tribesmen came to form the advance party of the Pakistan military. Whitehead writes that Pakistan did not want to trigger an open conflict with India, and found its best option in “turning the martial mood of the the Pathan hill tribes to [its] best interests”. India’s official account says the use of Pashtun tribesmen by Pakistan sought to divert the demands for Pashtunistan in the North-West Frontier Province. Two Kashmiris are celebrated for their resistance that helped keep the invaders out of Srinagar for a few days, until Indian troops arrived on October 27, a day after Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession to India. One is Brigadier Rajinder Singh, who had just been appointed as the new Chief of Staff of the state forces. He had headed out of Srinagar with 200 troops, and his decision to blow up a bridge in Uri slowed the advance of the tribesmen, although it did not stop them. Singh was killed in action on October 25. The other is Shahid Maqbool Sherwani, whose story has been immortalised by Mulk Raj Anand in Death of a Hero. Sherwani, a National Conference worker in Baramulla, gave the invaders wrong directions to Srinagar airport. He was crucified by them when they realised he had tricked them. All accounts of the war also ascribe the tribesmen’s failure to make progress towards Srinagar to their preoccupation with looting Baramulla, with some even returning to Pakistan with their loot. Sardar Qayum Khan, who served as president of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, is quoted by Whitehead as saying that the tribesmen were “uncontrollable people”; “they went on looting”. After Hari Singh signed off on the accession, four Dakotas flew to Srinagar from Delhi through October 27 transporting troops. More troops followed over the next few days. The invaders were held off close to Srinagar, at a place called Shalteng, and there was a battle in Budgam, close to the airport. By November 8, the Indian Army had taken control of Srinagar; on November 9, of Baramulla; and by November 13, of Uri. However, with Pakistani forces formally entering the battlefield in support of the tribesmen, the war would continue for over a year, until a ceasefire was declared on the night of December 31, 1948, and the terms of the ceasefire were accepted on January 5, 1949.

Genies, has updated its software development kit and added Giphy and Gucci as new partners to enable their users to create personalized Genie avatars. The company released the first version of its SDK in 2018 when it raised $10 million to directly challenge Snap and Apple for avatar dominance. Now, with the latest update, the company said it has managed to create a new three-dimensional rendering that can be used across platforms — if developers let Genies handle the animation. Genies brings lifelike avatars to other apps with $10M from celebrities Genies has already managed to sign up many of the biggest names in entertainment to act as their official manager through their Genies talent agency. These include celebrities like Shawn Mendes, Justin Bieber, Cardi B and Rihanna. Genies also locked in deals with the National Football League’s players’ association, along with Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association. Now, those celebrities and athletes can monetize exclusive digital goods made by Genies on platforms like Gucci and Giphy, and the fashion house and meme generator can now give users their own digital identity to play around with. “Over the past year, our technology has been sharpened by the exacting creative demands of celebrities. This advanced Genies’ march to be the go-to avatar globally,” said Akash Nigam, Genies CEO and co-founder, in a statement. “What was previously a celebrity exclusive experience, is now broadly available for consumers to use as their virtual portable identities. By opening up to the masses, we’ve now created an opportunity for tastemakers to forge new, unique relationships with their audiences through avatar digital goods.” The SDK integrations are still highly curated and tailored (there’s a lot of heavy lifting that Genies needs to do with each one). For instance, Gucci users can try on the latest designs and the company will sell digital goods on its platform created by Genies. Giphy users will use their avatars as gifs on its site and through its distribution network. “Our Avatar Agency has served as the go-to platform for thousands of artists, and with our next-gen, highly expressive and dynamic 3D Genie, we will further solidify our position as the universal digital identity,” said Izzy Pollak, director of Avatar SDK at Genies. “For celebrities and everyday users alike, it unlocks new arenas and verticals for users to cultivate their avatars in. On top of traditional 2D environments like mobile apps and websites, Genies can now live in AR/VR platforms, games, and in use cases or SDK partner platforms that demand a 360-degree rendering of the digital goods they purchase.”

FILE PHOTO: Google Chrome logo is seen near cyber code and words "spy" in this illustration picture Reuters Google Chrome's optional auto-delete feature for cookies and site data doesn't affect data attached to Google.com or YouTube, the Register reports. Google says it's the result of a fixable bug, rather than a case of the tech giant giving itself a way to continue tracking privacy-minded users. "We are aware of a bug in Chrome that is impacting how cookies are cleared on some first-party Google websites. We are investigating the issue, and plan to roll out a fix in the coming days," a spokesperson said. Programmer Jeff Johnson was the first to spot the bug. A Google Chrome feature that lets users guard their privacy by deleting personal data is sparing data from two websites: Google.com and YouTube, the Register reports. The Register report was based on a blog post published by programmer Jeff Johnson in early October. Johnson found that a Chrome feature claiming to clear cookies and site data when you exit the browser was retaining data for both Google.com and YouTube, which is owned by Google. "We are aware of a bug in Chrome that is impacting how cookies are cleared on some first-party Google websites. We are investigating the issue, and plan to roll out a fix in the coming days," the spokesperson said. Google was not immediately available to comment on how long this bug had existed when contacted by Business Insider. It comes at a sensitive moment for Google. The tech giant — along with fellow Silicon Valley behemoths Apple, Facebook, and Amazon — was the target of a blockbuster Congressional antitrust report earlier this month. The report alleged that Google uses its various services to give itself an anti-competitive edge over other, smaller companies, resulting in an "ecosystem of interlocking monopolies."

Red Ribbon Week raises awareness of drug use and the problems related to drugs facing our community, and encourages parents, educators, business owners, and other community organizations to promote drug-free lifestyles. Red Ribbon Week encourages our entire community to adopt healthy, drug-free lifestyles. The campaign brings together parents, schools, and businesses as we look for ways to keep kids and communities’ drug free. In 1985, Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique S. “Kiki” Camarena was killed by drug traffickers. Shortly after his death, citizens from his hometown of Calexico, California, began wearing red ribbons to remember him and commemorate his sacrifice The first official Red Ribbon Week celebration was created by the National Family Partnership (NFP) in 1988. NFP continues to coordinate the campaign for families, schools, and communities across the nation each year. Since then, the red ribbon has symbolized a continuing commitment to reducing the demand for illicit drugs in our communities. Red Ribbon Week gives us the opportunity to be vocal and visible in our efforts to achieve a drug-free community. Reducing the use of drugs and alcohol among youth will help to reduce injuries and deaths from impaired driving. Research shows that children are less likely to use alcohol and other drugs when parents and other role models are clear and consistent in their opposition to drug use and the misuse of prescription drugs. Lamar Jackson started the season hot, completing 80 percent of his passes against the Cleveland Browns in Week 1, then 75 percent the following week in Houston. Over the last four games, however, his completion percentage has dropped to 56.6 percent, which ranks 31st in the league. While Jackson has misfired on some opportunities, Quarterbacks Coach James Urban says Jackson's completion percentage has also suffered due to some intentional throwaways. Which isn't always a bad thing. Jackson has thrown just two interceptions and Urban is pleased that Jackson has not forced more dangerous throws into tight coverage. In fact, Urban was not happy when Jackson didn't throw the ball away Sunday in Philadelphia, when he took a sack that forced Baltimore out of field goal range. "I think he had about five throwaways this past game, which as coaches, we applaud," Urban said. "He should have thrown the ball away and not taken that sack that took us out of field goal range. He made a poor decision on that play, but on many other plays, he's making wise decisions to not take a sack or make a bad play worse."Jackson's ability to improvise is one of the things that makes him special. During the past two weeks, Jackson has made a few more sidearm throws than usual. Some have of those sidearm tosses have found the mark, like his touchdown flick to Nick Boyle in Philadelphia. "I don't think I've slipped," Jackson said. "It's certain situations in the game when you have to throw in certain windows, guys putting their arms up trying to slap the ball. I'm trying to find angles, that's why sometimes my elbow drops trying to get the ball out." Asked if he saw Jackson's throwing base breaking down, Urban said, "I don't see that at all." "I don't think I've slipped," Jackson said. "It's certain situations in the game when you have to throw in certain windows, guys putting their arms up trying to slap the ball. I'm trying to find angles, that's why sometimes my elbow drops trying to get the ball out." Asked if he saw Jackson's throwing base breaking down, Urban said, "I don't see that at all.""Miles heard one thing and Lamar said another thing," Culley said. "It's our responsibility when we're in the huddle to make sure we're hearing and listening to what he's saying. That's happened a couple of times. That's on us to make sure we know when we come out of the huddle exactly what he's calling. We corrected that." Culley said Boykin (11 catches, 122 yards, no touchdowns) may be pressing to live up to higher expectations in his second season. "He puts a little bit of pressure on himself to want to always do everything right," Culley said. "We've talked about that. He's really working on this, just going out and reacting, not worrying about being right or being wrong about things. I think he's done a really good job of doing that this year. Unfortunately, he had two communications errors right there that looked like set him back a little bit." Jackson said he and Boykin were willing to put in extra work that will help them after the bye. "It starts in practice," Jackson said. "Getting together, work after practice, see what he likes and what he doesn't. Making his job a lot easier and mine as well." Hewitt Believes Dorsey and Bonds Ready for Bigger Roles The loss of cornerback Anthony Averett for an extended period due to a shoulder injury gives Khalil Dorsey and/or Terrell Bonds an opportunity for more playing time. Pass Defense Coordinator Chris Hewitt believes both are ready. Dorsey was undrafted out of Northern Arizona and has played in the past four games, almost exclusively on special teams. He took four defensive snaps against Washington. Bonds was undrafted out of Tennessee State in 2018 and spent last year on the Ravens' practice squad. "They're both great young players, have a lot of speed, extremely quick," Hewitt said. "They're more suited to play inside as a nickel. They just need the opportunity to go out there and get the experience. They go out there every week in practice and make plays. You know how we think around here, it's next man up. Those guys will ready to go at any point."
