It started with a large vehicle that got stuck in the deepening snow. That minor incident grew into a monster snow-covered traffic jam as more than 1,000 cars became stranded on a highway that runs between Tokyo and the city of Niigata along the Sea of Japan coast. The snarl began Wednesday night, local news sources reported. "The snow was extremely heavy," one driver told the public broadcaster NHK. "As time went by, the cars got buried. I was really scared. I've eaten all of my food and drinks. Now, to drink water, I have to melt snow I collect in a plastic bottle." Heavy snowfall in recent days, especially in the Niigata and Gunma prefectures, blanketed some areas with more than 6 feet of snow. NHK reported that these prefectures have seen seven times more snow than they typically do at this point at this time of year. "I hardly slept, and I was worried because I had absolutely no information (about the situation)," a 48-year-old man, who had been driving to his home near Tokyo, told Kyodo News. The line of cars at one point stretched more than 10 miles, authorities told the news agency. For a time, traffic was stopped in both directions. Lanes bound for Niigata were cleared by Friday morning, while about 260 vehicles on the Tokyo-bound lanes were still stuck as of 7 p.m. local time Friday, Kyodo reported. The East Nippon Expressway Co. said it could be Saturday before all the cars are cleared. "I would like to apologize for the extensive period of closure along the Kan-etsu Expressway caused by snow, and particularly for trapping our customers for a long period of time," company President Toru Obata said at a press conference, NBC News reported. Japan's Self-Defense Forces distributed food, water, blankets and fuel to those stranded in their cars, and worked with shovels to budge the vehicles. Two people were taken to the hospital for respiratory problems and nausea on Thursday, CNN reported. "The government will do its utmost to rescue anyone who is stuck in their vehicle," said the government's top spokesman, Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato, according to Reuters, which reported the snow has knocked out power to more than 10,000 households. Meanwhile, more heavy snow is forecast for the weekend.

The company’s supply chain solutions enable retailers to create a holistic approach – connecting and automating information, processes and people through technology Symphony RetailAI, the leading global provider of integrated AI-enabled marketing, merchandising and supply chain solutions for FMCG retailers and manufacturers, announced that it has been named to Food Logistics’ 2020 FL100+ Top Software and Technology Providers list. The annual list honors leading software and technology providers that ensure a safe, efficient and reliable global food and beverage supply chain. Symphony RetailAI was listed in 11 categories including data synchronization, predictive analytics, supply chain management and warehouse management systems. Today’s retailers are presented with new challenges each day. There’s both a historical reliance on sales data to drive business and a desire to have a more customer-centric focus and operations. As retailers focus more on measuring every aspect of their businesses, they are creating a lot of data, which is often not converted into practical insights that help them make more effective decisions. This “micro focus” on data has broken the supply chain into micro processes that don’t work in a cohesive way. Symphony RetailAI delivers a connected, omnichannel solution suite that helps retailers deliver on their customer promises.“In addition to the existing challenges retailers face, the global COVID-19 pandemic has added complexity to the supply chain and also highlighted the supply chain’s critical nature,” said Patrick Buellet, Chief Strategy Officer, Symphony RetailAI. “The dramatic increase in online grocery volume exposed the food retail industry’s need for quicker adoption of modernized processes and technology to fuel efficiency and agility. In fact, in a survey of FMCG retailers and CPGs, Symphony RetailAI found that 89% of those surveyed believe that the events of COVID-19 are driving retailers to optimize the supply chain to support omnichannel strategies faster than anticipated.” With artificial intelligence and master data management at the core, Symphony RetailAI’s supply chain solutions enable retailers to achieve a holistic view of the customer that fuels profitable growth – connecting and automating information, processes and people through technology – to deliver on their promises to customers. The solutions leverage all available data to drive productivity and allow retailers to get granular and highly specific views of data instantaneously and remove manual elements from key processes, such as replenishment, so that they can quickly drive real change in line with customer requirements. Recommended AI News: Cyclotron Helps A Large Healthcare Company To Migrate From Google Workspace To Microsoft 365 Symphony RetailAI’s supply chain solutions help streamline the food logistics supply chain with: Omnichannel Communication – creating a smooth and transparent workflow across the business to serve the customer as quickly and cost-effectively as possible. Fulfillment – minimizing the time to customer without damaging profitability. Supplier Collaboration – delivering a high level of internal and external synchronization. “From fleet management to warehouse management to simply just track and trace along the cold food chain, these software and technology providers have definitely stepped it up to ensure cold food and beverage products continue moving along the line without incident,” said Marina Mayer, editor-in-chief, Food Logistics and Supply & Demand Chain Executive. “This pandemic has thrown the food industry a curveball, but many of these providers fast-tracked the development and deployment of their solutions to ensure food safety, traceability, visibility and quality assurance. So, to these winners and others in the industry working to make a difference, thank you.”

For anyone looking to build a new computer, Newegg has always been one of the most reliable online retailers to look for the newest components. The launch of any new component always has the market in a frenzy to buy them and Newegg has been known for its combo deals. The newest products always came in combo deals and Newegg has continued to that for years. The combo deals were basically the only option when it came to buying the latest components. This year is no different with the latest Nvidia RTX 30 Series graphics cards appearing in combo deals. Newegg's New Policy Does Not Allow Partial Returns Anymore On Certain Combo Deals The revision to the return policy has changed the dynamic of the combo deals. In previous years, buyers could return the components they did not want and keep the part they wanted. HotHardware saw the change and noted that certain combo deals now have to be returned fully in order to get a refund. Previous customers could only temporarily pay an inflated price and then return the part they did not need, but Newegg's thinking was that this would limit the scalping and bot issue. The parts were still ending up on eBay and it was not the solution they needed. The issue here is that the solution to this problem is a double-edged sword. Actual customers are angry because they now can not get the part they want without having to keep the other parts included in the combo. If they kept the old policy, scalpers and bots could still get the parts. Companies like Microcenter and BestBuy are doing a much better job with it. Microcenter is taking IDs and limiting the cards or processors a single person can purchase in a month and BestBuy is adding the extra hassle of in-person pickups. Newegg may not have these options, but they can use it as inspiration. Options that Newegg could consider are IP restrictions or even only allowing verified accounts to purchase a limited amount of cards. A surefire verification method that is tried and trusted would be a phone number. Newegg is not handling this issue well and their loyal customers are not happy with how they are handling the issue. Scalping will always be an issue, but better methods can be implemented that will both reduce the effect of scalping and please their loyal customers. More information on the scalping market and part shortage is available here.

Automakers are having hysterics about the impact on their sales and profits if the European Union (EU) and Britain fail to agree a free trade deal, but the ramifications of that look minor compared with the long-term existential threat to the automotive world from electrification and the demise of the internal combustion engine (ICE). If Britain is forced after Brexit to switch from tariff-free auto trade with the EU to World Trade Organization (WTO) terms, that will soon sort itself out even if it leaves some competitors a bit bruised. After all, getting on for half of Britain’s auto production is already sold through WTO tariffs. But according to Peter Wells, Professor of Business and Sustainability at Cardiff Business School, there are more massive threats looming and only the strongest will survive. The U.K industry faces Brexit upheavals, but the global industry will have to handle a decade of disruption as electric cars and maybe computer driven ones gradually replace conventional vehicles. The whole idea of individual car ownership is being questioned “There’s a huge watershed moment building up for the global industry. The pace of change is frighteningly fast because of pressure to cut carbon (dioxide CO2) emissions and fight climate change. There will soon be a huge demand for low (CO2) emissions vehicles and those companies able to act quickly, like Volkswagen, will be in a position to benefit,” Wells said in an interview. Volkswagen plans to spend about $86 billion developing electric cars and the latest technology over the next 5 years. VW, which sold about 11 million vehicles world-wide in 2019, has already launched its ID.3 battery electric, the first iteration of a new generation of electric vehicles. VW hopes this will allow it to overtake Tesla Inc TSLA +4.1% as the world’s leading maker of electric cars and SUVs. MORE FOR YOU Ford Mustang Mach-E Arrives, A Tesla Model Y Competitor Replete With Engine ‘Noise’ Citroen’s Cute Little Ami Could Be The First Mass Market Electric Car What The EV And AV Community Wants From A Biden Administration The coming turmoil will force companies which lag in the race to seek safety with more partnerships and mergers or they will be swallowed up by successful ones, according to Wells. The push for electric cars is being led in Europe by politicians, and therein lies a concern because currently, the only way to sell an electric car is to either persuade waverers with big taxpayer subsidies, or by making ICE cars unattractive with onerous environmental demands like allowing electric cars access to cities and denying that right to the rest. Oil rich, socialist Norway has already shown the way. Britain has said it won’t allow the sale of new ICE vehicles after 2030. The European Commission, the policy making arm of the EU, wants at least 30 million electric vehicles on its roads by 2030, up from about 1.4 million electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles now. That has forced the automakers’ union, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association known by its French acronym ACEA, to make a plea for what it considers to be sanity. “The Commission paper lays out a bold ambition to have at least 30 million zero-emission cars on the road across the European Union by 2030. Unfortunately, this vision is far removed from today’s reality,” ACEA Director General, Eric-Mark Huitema said in a statement. “To meet the Commission’s objective, we would need to see an almost 50-fold increase in zero-emission cars in circulation on our roads in just 10 years,” Huitema said. Whatever the result of this power play, Wells said Britain in particular and the European industry in general has to change its strategy from producing high-volume low profit margin vehicles to more niche and lower output ones with much bigger margins. “By 2030 or possibly 2025, Britain’s production will be smaller, maybe 1 million or maybe even less, but it will be more diverse than now,” Wells said. Auto production in Britain peaked at just over 1.7 million in 2016 and slipped to about 1.3 million in 2019, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The much lower number for 2020 will be a temporary coronavirus aberration. The biggest auto makers in Britain are now Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Jaguar Land Rover, Groupe PSA’s Vauxhall and BMW’s Mini. The long-term future of the two Japanese manufacturers is now considered questionable, not least because Japan and the EU have now agreed a free-trade deal. Honda already plans to close its British factory for good in 2021. PSA has said the future of its Vauxhall plant depends on a favorable Brexit deal, hinting that if in fact talks failed resulting in WTO terms it might well pull out. “The market is now moving much faster than the industry wanted, faster than regulators and politicians anticipated,” Wells said. As 2030 approaches it will get harder and harder to sell ICE vehicles. By mid-decade, mass carmakers, as opposed to small manufacturers like Aston Martin, Ferrari and McLaren, will be forced to shut down research and development into fossil fuel power. Residual values of ICE vehicles will plummet. The move to all electric motoring looks set in stone, with perhaps only one way to thwart it. Unless the price of electric cars falls drastically, Europeans on average salaries are unlikely to be able to afford new cars, although they might be persuaded to embrace little mini-electric cars like the Citroen Ami. If European voters find themselves forced on to crowded trains and buses, there could well be a voter backlash along the lines of France’s Gilets Jaunes movement. Rioting there still continues a couple of years after France decided it was time to raise the price of diesel, an essential component of the French transport economy outside the big cities. As for Britain’s prospects, its automotive industry might be feeling under unfair pressure from Brexit turmoil, but in fact it will be forced to address issues the rest of the industry will have to face. “In Britain, we are the canary in the mine. The industry here will be hit a bit sooner and perhaps more drastically than other countries. The U.K. industry has a long history of innovation that’s kept us up to speed with Formula 1 and I’m optimistic because of this it will be able to perform well when it has to handle lower volume, higher value. In that sense I’m optimistic. Manufacturers like Jaguar Land Rover need to be able to handle the transition to electric and electricmobility and different business case challenges,” Wells said. Some harsh decisions will have to be taken in Britain and Europe won’t be immune. “Things were always going to be difficult, but now the pandemic and Brexit have made it much worse for everyone. We’ve had overcapacity across Europe for some time. With this huge competitive pressure, more capacity will have to go,” Wells said.

GREENWICH — Since the doors opened at the new Jenni Kayne location on Greenwich Avenue late last month, the store has been gaining quite a bit of attention. The brand, which sells clothing, housewares and furnishings, started in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles and spread through California. Only three stores have so far opened on the East Coast, with the other two in Manhattan.“It’s a California lifestyle brand, and it’s obvious from the customers who have been coming in, they’re excited for it to hit the Avenue,” said store manager Katja Shrouder. “And they love to see a new store opening on the Avenue, people are excited for something new.” The brand specializes in neutral solid colors, along with high-quality textiles, including cashmere, wool blends and alpaca. “It’s all about neutral, with a few pops of color. Very timeless,” said Shrouder, a Greenwich resident. “And it’s about being chic and cozy.” A big gift item since the store opened, she said, is a loose fitting top called “the cashmere cocoon.” The brand has achieved a certain cachet on the West Coast. “A lot of our customers know us from California, so they’re happy to see us here,” said Shrouder. The number of shoppers visiting the new business has so far “exceeded our expectations,” she said. Jenni Kayne, the founder of the brand, has made a name for herself in recent years as a “tastemaker” and social-media influencer. Beside the retail operation, the store will be holding “community-building events” on a regular basis, offering talks on good health, wellness and lifestyle. The store is employing a staff of four people. The store’s space was previously occupied by the Kate Spade store. Greenwich Avenue has been hit by a number of high-profile vacancies, which began before the coronavirus pandemic began. Brooks Brothers, Lillian August, Marmot and Vilebrequin are among the recent closures. A number of new businesses have also opened late this year on Greenwich Avenue, which recently began offering valet parking on weekends. rmarchant@greenwichtime.com

[News] This year taught us that no good news is too small to share
_Happy boy posted a topic in News
“Summer is on its way and my partner and I managed to grow this rose which has a wonderful scent.” A picture of a beautiful orange flower accompanied the note—part of a weekly email sharing good news with the members of our research center. One year ago, an announcement like this could have seemed insignificant and irrelevant to the important work of science. But amid the difficulties of 2020, it was anything but. It put a smile on my face, and hopefully it did the same for my colleagues. It helped build human connection. And it reminded us that, even this year, good things happened. Last year, the director of the research center in Australia where I serve as the business strategy manager asked me to help maintain a positive, productive culture. Back then, I didn’t anticipate that the task was going to be so difficult. Then, of course, came 2020. During the first half of the year, Australia experienced an extreme drought followed by devastating bushfires and heavy rainfall that brought massive flooding. Next came the pandemic. With people not coming in to the lab or staying only long enough to conduct their experiments, we lost our sense of interpersonal connection. Then, in July, our director shared that she had been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer. In the wake of that devastating announcement, one of the center’s group leaders suggested we send our director weekly good news to keep her informed and to try to lift her spirits. One week later, we sent the first email. The rule was that no good news was too small to share. We reported the arrival of much-needed new computers for one lab, one of our group leaders being contacted by a journalist for their expert opinion on viruses in the context of the pandemic, a student submitting their thesis, a paper being published, and a group leader securing child care spots for their children. The effect of this simple newsletter—which went to all the group leaders as well as our director—was profound. Many people responded, saying they enjoyed this informal venue for learning about their colleagues’ successes. The flood of negative news had kept us from noticing the good things that were happening. Highlighting the positive moments didn’t mean we were ignoring the larger catastrophes, but it helped keep our spirits up. I also realized that, prior to the newsletter, some group members didn’t know about others’ successes. Sharing these updates more publicly gave everyone a boost. After a few weeks, we decided to broaden the recipient list to include everyone at the center. These days, we solicit good news every Wednesday and send out an email every Friday. The process and format are simple and no-frills, making the newsletter sustainable. At first I worried that people might be hesitant to share updates that seemed too insignificant, but the opposite has been true; they have been eager to highlight their endeavors and successes, big and small, professional and personal. Good news we’ve shared includes securing grants and fellowships, publishing papers, becoming parents, turning 40, and—of course—growing roses on one’s balcony. “I love good news time,” a colleague wrote after a recent email. “It really is uplifting.” Last month, one group leader’s good news was that, after breaking his arm, he finally had his cast removed. The next week, he reported that his daughter broke her arm and offered the tongue-in-cheek hypothesis that the number of broken bones in his family is a conserved quantity. It wasn’t exactly good news, but the joke made me chuckle. Equally important, it’s personal news, and sharing it helps us stay connected in these difficult times. With 2020 drawing to a close, we can hope for better things in 2021. But regardless of what the future holds, we plan to continue to share our good news. -
