  2. North Korea did not display any intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) at a military parade to mark its 70th anniversary, reports say. It is also unclear whether leader Kim Jong-un made a speech at the event. The parcel is being scrutinised for clues about North Korea's weapons arsenal and professed commitment to denuclearisation. Some analyzes had predicted that Mr Kim would tone down the display after his summit with US President Donald Trump. A large display of ICBMs - which can reach the US mainland, potentially carrying a nuclear warhead - would have been seen as provocative. Kim Jong-un's faith in Trump 'unchanged' Korean reunions: Families divided by war meet in North Why North Korea is in no hurry to please the US N Korea 'making missiles' despite US thaw No footage of the parade has been released but news agency AFP, which had a reporter at the scene, and NK News, which had pictures from North Korean state TV, said no ICBMs had been seen. In June Mr Kim and Mr Trump signed a vague agreement to work towards denuclearization of the Korean peninsula but it did not include a timeline, details or mechanisms to verify the process. High level talks and visits have continued but the most recent scheduled trip by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was called off last minute and both sides have blamed each other for the stalling negotiations while insisting they're committed to the progress. The BBC's Seoul Correspondent Laura Bicker said any show of ICBMs could have put future discussions and any deal to declare an end to the Korean war at risk North Korea was also due to hold its first mass games in five years. The Arirang Mass Games are an elaborate propaganda spectacle with intense co-ordinated displays. This year's games, which tell a symbolic story of North Korea's history, are titled The Glorious Country. Analysis of satellite images from the past two weeks suggest this year's games, which will continue through September, are going to be very big. Past games have featured gigantic stadiums filled with performers, synchronized gymnasts and co-ordinated dance displays. The colorful displays are likely to be striking but the UN has in the past said that children are forced to take part, or to help in the build-up.
  3. US rapper Mac Miller has been found dead at his California home, US media report. Reports say the 26-year-old, who was open about his substance abuse, died from an apprehensive overdose. The rapper, whose real name was Malcolm James McCormick, rose to fame after topping US charts with his debut album in 2011. He released his latest record, Swimming, earlier this year and was due to go on tour. Miller went through a well-publicized break-up with singer and long-term girlfriend Ariana Grande earlier this year. The pair collaborated on a number of songs and performed together at the One Love Manchester concert in 2017. Charges were filed against the rapper last month after he was arrested in May for driving under the impact and hit and run. Artists including Khalid and Shawn Mendes paid tribute to Miller after news of his death broke on Friday.

  8. A number of top US officials have denied that they are the author of a damning anonymous editorial that attacks President Donald Trump. The New York Times article, said to be written by a senior White House official, says Mr Trump's appeals are trying to stifle his agenda. There is fierce speculation over who is responsible - with the vice president of those to deny any involvement. Mr Trump has described the writer as "gutless" and the newspaper as "phony". A spokesman for Vice President Mike Pence has dismissed claims that he wrote the op-ed, describing it as "false, illogical and gutless". Does 'lodestar' guide us to Trump author? Anonymous Trump op-ed key pass tests Linguistic clues to NYT insider? Several other cabinet members and top officials have also denied writing the piece. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo attacked the writer as a "disgruntled deceptive bad actor", adding: "I come from a place where you are not in a position to execute the order of intent, you have a singular option - that is to leave . " Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin described the anonymous piece as "irresponsible," while a spokesman for the Secretary of Homeland Security Kirsten Nielsen said: "These types of political attacks are beneath the secretary and the department's mission." What's in the editorial? The article - entitled I Am Part of the Resistance Inside the Trump Administration - The New York Times describes a senior official in the Trump administration. The paper says the author requested anonymity and that it was essential to deliver an "important perspective" to its readers. "Many of the senior officials in his own administration are working diligently from within his party and his worst inclinations," the article says. "I would know, I am one of them." Although the writer states that they support the administration's objectives, they say that its successes have come into conflict with the president, who is described as impulsive, erratic and amoral, and whose "misguided impulses" need to be controlled for the good of the US. "It may be cold comfort in this chaotic era, but Americans should know that we are in the room." We are recognizing what is happening and we are trying to do it right when Donald Trump will not, "it says. How has the White House responded? Angrily. One of Mr Trump's tweets simply said "TREASON?". Another said the "Deep State and the Left, and their vehicle, the Fake News Media, are going Crazy - and they do not know what to do," pointing to the growing US economy as an achievement. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the author was "not putting country first, but putting himself and his ego ahead of the will of the American people. Meanwhile, First Lady Melania Trump said: "If a person is bold enough to accuse people of negative actions, they have a responsibility to public stand by their words." Why does it matter? The White House is already on the defensive amid questions over Mr Bob Woodward. Fear: Trump in the White House also describes the staff deliberately undermining the president, with some hiding sensitive documents, and other helpers calling him an "idiot" and a "liar". Mr Trump has called the book a "con". One of the most explosive passages in the New York Times article says there were "early whispers within the cabinet of invoking the 25th Amendment", which would allow Mr Trump to be forced out of office. The top officials are reportedly working against the US leader. In the Atlantic, David Frum, a Republican commentator who is a fierce critic of Mr Trump, called it a "constitutional crisis". "What the author has just done is throw the government of the United States into even more dangerous turmoil," he wrote. "He or she has enflamed the paranoia of the president and empowered the president's wilfulness." To train CIA director, John Brennan, who has been strongly critical of Mr Trump, called the article "active insubordination" he said it was "born out of loyalty to the country". Others have wondered whether it is an attempt to distance the Republican administration from their president ahead of the important mid-term elections.

  17. Two Russian nationalities have been named as suspects in the attempted murder of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia. The men, using the names Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, are thought to be officers from Russia's military intelligence service, the PM said. Scotland Yard and the CPS say there is enough evidence to charge the men. Mr Skripal, 66, and his daughter Yulia, 33, were poisoned with the nerve agent Novichok in March. Det Sgt Nick Bailey also fell ill after responding to the incident in Salisbury. Police are linking the attack to a separate Novichok poisoning on 30 June, when Dawn Sturgess and Charlie Rowley became unwell at a house in Amesbury, about eight miles from Salisbury. Ms Sturgess died in hospital on 9 July. Mr Rowley was discharged from hospital on 20 July. Salisbury poisoning suspicions: Latest updates What happened to the Skripals? Why Novichok stays deadly for so long Speaking in the Commons, Prime Minister Theresa May said the government had concluded, from intelligence provided by UK agencies, that the men were part of the GRU intelligence service. The poisoning was "not a rogue operation" and was "almost certainly" approved at a senior level of the Russian state, she said. Image copyrightMET POLICE Image caption Police released CCTV showing the two men at Gatwick Airport Image copyrightMET POLICE Image caption They were then seen in Salisbury on 4 March, having visited for reconnaissance the previous day "We must now step up our collective efforts specifically against the GRU," Mrs May added. She condemned the "despicable attack" and promised "the full range of tools from across our national security apparatus" would have been used to "counter the threat" caused by Russia. Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn said the use of military-grade nerve agent on the streets of Britain was an "outrage and beyond reckless". The two suspects, believed to have been using aliases, traveled on Russian passports and are thought to be aged about 40. The CPS is not applying to Russia for the extension of the two men, as Russia does not exceed its own nationalities. But a European Arrest Warrant has been obtained in case they travel to the EU. Could suspected be returned to the UK? Russian President Vladimir Putin's foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov told reporters the names of the Russian suspects "do not mean anything to me". Andrey Kortunov, director general of the Russian International Affairs Council, said "the fact that you have two photos and two maybe fake names does not mean too much". The UK will meet the UN security council to discuss the case on Thursday. Image caption Yulia and Sergei Skripal fell ill after Mr Skripal's front door was sprayed with Novichok Sue Hemming, CPS director of legal services, said there was enough evidence "to provide a realistic prospect of conviction" and that it was "clearly in the public interest" to bring charges. The offs include conspiracy to murder Sergei Skripal; the attempted murder of Sergei Skripal, Yulia Skripal and Nick Bailey; the use and possession of Novichok contradary to the Chemical Weapons Act; and causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Yulia Skripal and Nick Bailey. Scotland Yard's Neil Basu, the head of UK counter-terrorism policing, said that Det Sgt Bailey "continues to make good progress but remains off work". What happens now? Analysis by BBC diplomatic correspondant Jonathan Marcus The decision to identify two named Russian individuals in the Skripal case as agents of the Military Intelligence Service - the GRU - is a significant development. It raises the level of evidence on which the UK government's charges are based and potentially gives added weight to calls for additional international sanctions against Moscow. This evidence will be presented to the UN Security Council later this week. Already messages have been exchanged between London and Moscow; the British Ambassador there seeing a senior Russian official and a Russian diplomat going into the foreign office here in London. But given that it is highly unlikely that these men will ever face trial, what happens now? The prime minister put her emphasis upon bolstering western democracies' defences - not just in purely military terms, but specifically in countering the powerful intelligence arm of the Russian armed forces, the GRU. The Metropolitan Police said the two men arrived at Gatwick Airport from Moscow on 2 March and stayed at the City Stay Hotel in Bow Road, east London. On 4 March they traveled to Salisbury - having also visited for reconnaissance the previous day - where Mr Skripal's front door was contaminated with Novichok. Officers believe a modified perfume bottle was used to spray the door. The pair flew from Heathrow to Moscow later that night. While traces of Novichok were found in the London hotel room, there is no risk to other guests who were staying at the hotel at the time, police said. They now want to hear from anyone who was a guest there from 4 March to 4 May. London Mayor Sadiq Khan said he had been assured there was no risk to public health in London. Image caption The hotel in east London, where police say Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov stayed before they traveled to Salisbury, is 'open for business as usual' Police said Ms Sturgess and Mr Rowley were later exposed to Novichok after handling a contaminated container, labeled as Nina Ricci Premier Jour perfume. Mr Rowley told police he found the box containing the small bottle and an applicator - all found to be counterfeit - in a charity bin. He tried to put the two parts together and got some of the contents on himself. His partner Ms Sturgess applied some of the contents to her wrists and became unwell. Image caption The counterfeit perfume bottle recovered from Mr Rowley's home and the box police say it came in. The bottle, with a modified nozzle, had contained a "significant amount" of Novichok, Scotland Yard said. Mr Basu said: "We do not yet know where the suspicions disposed of the Novichok that they used to attack the door, where Dawn and Charlie got the bottle that poisoned them, or if it is the same bottle used in both poisonings." But he added that the adapted bottle and packaging made it "a perfect cover for smuggling the weapon into the country, and a perfect delivery method for the attack against the Skripal's front door". Image caption Dawn Sturgess and Charlie Rowley were also poisoned by Novichok Mr Basu confirmed the two poisoning cases were related. "It now forms one investigation," he said. "We do not believe Dawn and Charlie were carefully targeted, but became victims as a result of the recklessness in which such a toxic nerve agent was disposed of." The reaction from Russia

  22. AFP Image caption Jeff Sessions has been a frequent target of Mr Trump's very public ire US President Donald Trump has accused Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the justice department of reducing the re-election chances of two Republican representatives by prosecuting them. The move to file charges against the men jeopardises "easy wins" in the mid-term elections, Mr Trump tweeted. One is accused of insider trading and the other of campaign violations. The tweet has sparked fresh criticism that Mr Trump is unlawfully seeking to interfere with the justice system. The Trump loyalist who became attorney general It is highly unusual for sitting candidates to lash out against attorneys general and to try to bring political considerations to bear on prosecution decisions. What's at stake? It comes ahead of the mid-term elections on 6 November. The Democrats are seeking to wrest control of the House of Representatives from the Republicans. Last month Representative Christopher Collins was charged with participating in an insider trading scheme. He has denied wrongdoing but said he would not seek re-election. Later in August Representative Duncan Hunter and his wife were indicated for allegedly using campaign funds to pay for personal expenses. They too deny the charges. Both men were early supporters of Mr Trump when he launched his bid for the presidency and was facing hostility from Republican congressional leaders. In a tweet, Mr Trump criticized the prosecution of "two very po[CENSORED]r Republican Congressmen." Tweet Two long running, Obama era, investigations of two very po[CENSORED]r Republican Congressmen were brought to a well publicized charge, just ahead of the Mid-Terms, by the Jeff Sessions Justice Department. Two easy wins now in doubt because there is not enough time. Good job Jeff ...... - Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 3, 2018 The investigation into Mr Hunter began under the presidency of Barack Obama, but the Collins inquiry was launched last year. Banana republic? The justice department has not commented on the tweet. But it has drawn fire from a number of critics, including Mr Trump's fellow party members. Republican Senator Ben Sasse said the justice department should remain politically neutral in deciding whether or not to prosecute. "The United States is not some banana republic with a two-tiered system of justice - one for the majority party and one for the minority party. These two men have been charged with crimes because of evidence, not because of who the president was when the investigations began, "he said. US political scientist and columnist Brian Klass called Mr Trump's outburst "insane". This Is A Tweet No exaggeration: if any other elected leader in a Western democracy tried to instruct their top law enforcement official to shield their political allies from prosecution for political reasons like this, they would be forced to resign within hours. This is insane. https://t.co/i8HpCpDjm0 - Brian Klaas (@brianklaas) September 4, 2018 Other critics argument that mid-term elections are not a good reason to delay prosecution. Skip Twitter post by @SMKleinman Mr. President, Are you suggesting that members of Congress are above the law? The Department of Justice clearly has sufficient evidence to charge Mssrs. Collins and Hunter with felonies. The courts will decide their guilt or innocence. This is disgraceful. Best Regards, Steve - Steven Kleinman (@SMKleinman) September 4, 2018 End of Twitter post by @SMKleinman Have Trump's relationships with Sessions soured? The president has been a vocal critic of the justice department and has frequently clashed with his attorney general. The criticism began in the early months of the administration last year, when Mr Sessions recused himself from investigations into claims that Russia tried to help Mr Trump win the 2016 election. The attorney general, a staunch conservative and early supporter of Mr Trump's campaign, handed control to his deputy to avoid a potential conflict of interest. Mr Trump considered that move as a "betrayal". The deputy in turn appointed ex-FBI director Robert Mueller as special counsel to lead the inquiry, which the President has repeatedly called a "witch hunt". Could Trump be guilty of obstruction of justice? Trump, the Russia inquiry and obstruction claims Mr Trump is widely believed to have lost faith in Mr Sessions. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, he said: "I do question what is Jeff doing." Asked if he would retain his attorney general beyond the midterms, he declined to comment.
