  6. Officials in Puerto Rico now say 2,975 people died following Hurricane Maria - a devastating storm that stuck the US island territory in September 2017. The revised death toll is nearly 50 times the previous estimate of 64. Governor Ricardo Rossello "accepted" the findings in a long-awaited commissioned independent investigation. Puerto Rico has struggled to repair its infrastructure and power grid since the storm, and is asking US Congress for $ 139bn (£ 108bn) in recovery funds. "I'm giving an order to update the official number of deaths to 2,975," the Governor Ricardo Rossello said at a press conference. "Although this is an estimate, it has a scientific basis." The authorities have faced almost a year of criticism for underreporting the true toll of Maria - the most powerful storm to hit the region in nearly 90 years. The government earlier acknowledged the death toll was much higher than their official figure of 64. However, it did not change the total, despite some experts estimating 4,600 deaths. Total blackout hits 3.4m Puerto Ricans Six graphics that sum up Puerto Rico disaster Puerto Rico profile The latest findings - accepted by the island's authorities - were made in a report by researchers from George Washington University. It tracked the number of deaths from when Maria struck the island in September 2017 to mid-February of this year. Many people died as a result of poor healthcare provision and a lack of electricity and clean water. Repeated power outputs also led to an increased number of deaths from diabetes and sepsis. The Caribbean island is home to 3.3 million US citizens, some 8% of which have since left the island, the study said. The study also said that those from poor backgrounds in Puerto Rico were 45% more likely to have been killed in the aftermath of the hurricane. "The results of our epidemiological study suggest that, tragically, Hurricane Maria led to a large number of excess deaths throughout the island," principal investigator for the report, Carlos Santos-Burgoa, said. Hurricane Maria caused the largest blackout in US history, according to research consultancy the Rhodium Group. Official recognition moves recovery forward Gary O'Donoghue, BBC Washington correspondent For close to a year, Puerto Rico's government has clung to the idea that 64 people died as a result of Maria, the third most financially costly hurricane in the United States since 1900. That figure was always feasible - particularly when you consider that the 150 mph (241 kmh) winds caused around $ 90bn worth of damage and left houses for, on average, 84 days without electricity; 64 days without water and 41 days without cellular telephone coverage. The government's number was arrived at by merely counting those crushed by collapsing structures, drowned and hit by flying debris. But now the governor, Ricardo Rossello, has bound to the inevitable and ordered the official toll to be updated more than forty-fold. In truth, the new official number is still an estimate - based on mortality data and taking into account historical data on migration patterns. But the official recognition will allow the island to move on and focus fully on rebuilding its infrastructure and extracting the tens of billions of dollars needed from Congress to give the three million inhabitants of this already bankrupt territory something of a future.

  9. A nine-year-old boy has killed himself after enduring four days of homophobic bullying at school in Denver, Colorado, his mother says. Leia Pierce told KDVR-TV that her son, Jamel Myles, revealed to her over the summer that he was gay. She said Jamel wanted to go to school and tell his classmates because he was "proud" to be gay. Denver Public Schools (DPS) say crisis counsel have been made available to students at Jamel's elementary school. The school system sent letters to families on Friday about the additional counseling services for students. The letter, addressed to Shoemaker families, says Jamel's death "is an unexpected loss for our school community" and offers parents signs of stress to watch for in their children. "Our goal is to partner with you in sharing this news with your child in the most appropriate way possible, with as much support as may be needed, so please feel free to reach out about how you want to handle this." DPS Spokesman Will Jones told the BBC that teachers at Shoemaker "are creating a space for students to share how they are feeling and to process their emotions". Fourth and fifth grade teachers will also be calling families individually to check on students. "Our priority right now is to look at all the concerns raised in this case, to keep all our students safe and to do a fair and thorough review of the facts surrounding this tragic loss," he said in an emailed statement. Denver police are investigating the boy's death as a suicide. Jamel's body was found at home on Thursday, Ms Pierce told local media. US school sued over bullied girl's suicide He had begun attending fourth grade at the Joe Shoemaker Elementary School on Monday, she said. "My son told my oldest daughter the kids at school told him to kill himself," Ms Pierce said. "I'm just sad he did not come to me. She said that when he had told her he was gay, he looked "so scared", but she reassured him she still loved him. Ms Pierce said she hopes her son's death can raise awareness of the effects of bullying. 12. Iran's parliament has voted to remove the economy minister from office as the country battles an economic crisis. Masoud Karbasian was targeted by a no-confidence vote over problems in the banking system, tax regulation and his failure to fix the economy. The move comes three weeks after Labor Minister Ali Rabiei was ousted in a similar process. President Hassan Rouhani's government has struggled to control rising prices and the falling value of the currency. The re-imposition of sanctions by the US after its withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal has exacerbated the crisis. On Sunday, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif accused the US of launching a "psychological war against Iran and its business partners", Tasnim news agency reported. The impact of Iran sanctions - in charts Could the Iran deal collapse? Does US 'Plan B' on Iran risk war? Mr Karbasian lost the vote of confidence by 137 votes to 121 with two abstentions. The result was broadcast live on state radio. President Rouhani, a political moderate, is facing criticism from hardliners but also from within the reformist bloc that supports his government. Elias Hazrati, of the reformist Hope faction, was among those who broke ranks to vote for Mr Karbasian's removal. He accused the government of failing to plan for the full impact of sanctions. "We have not been prepared and we are not ready now. The only person we could have gotten our hands on was the economy minister." Otherwise, the president should have been impeached, "he said in comments reported by AFP news agency. In June, traders at Tehran's Grand Bazaar held a major protest against rising prices and the plummeting value of the rial. Riot police fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators who were marching towards parliament. It was the largest protest in the capital since 2012, when international sanctions related to Iran's nuclear activities were crippling its economy.

  19. Tesla chief executive Elon Musk says he will no longer be taking the electric car maker private, just two weeks after he was considering a deal. The plan was canceled after a board meeting on Thursday, he wrote in a post published on the company's site. Since Mr Musk announced his plan to delist Tesla, its share price has been dropped by 20%. He said he had told the board "that I believe the better path is for Tesla to remain public," and that they agreed. Mr Musk, who owns about a fifth of the company, said he had spoken with shareholders and major banks to consider the privatization but found the sentiment was "please do not do this". Earlier this month, Elon Musk shocked investors by announcing on Twitter that he had funding secured to take Tesla private at a value of $ 72bn (£ 57bn). It later transpired that he had not closed a deal with Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, with unhappy investors launching a lawsuit against him after the news. The lawsuits are still continuing against Mr Musk despite his cancellation of the privatization plan, as is an investigation by the US Securities and Exchange Commission to see if the tweet broke securities laws. The billionaire entrepreneur has complained since floating the company on the stock market that quarterly scrutiny of Tesla's finances encourages short-term thinking. But in a follow up tweet after his blog post, he said talks with shareholders had persuaded him otherwise. Shares fell even further after Mr Musk gave an emotional interview to the New York Times, in which he said he was working 120 hour weeks and had been using sedatives. Tesla managers reportedly told him to restrict his use of Twitter in recent days, according to the paper. Elon Musk in the hot seat, again Tesla CEO's '120 hour weeks' hit shares Tesla has faced growing financial pressures this year as it works to build more of its Model 3 cars. On 1 August, as Tesla reported another record loss, Mr Musk said he expected the company to be profitable in the second half of 2018 and every quarter going forward. But there is growing skepticism that Tesla can pull it off. The company facilitated investors with a surprise first quarter profit in 2013 thanks to sales of its Model S car - at the time the first profit in the company's history.
