  4. About 14,000 people were prevented from voting because they could not show an accepted form of photo ID during England's local elections, according to the Electoral Commission. Ethnic minorities and unemployed voters were more likely to be turned away, research by the watchdog suggests. "Significantly more" were put off voting by the requirement to show ID at polling stations, the report found. The policy was rolled out for the first time in Britain in May's elections. ADVERTISEMENT Data collected at polling station showed 0.25% of those who went to a polling station were not able to vote as a result of not being able to show ID, approximately 14,000 voters in total. The true figure is thought to be higher as some of those who wanted to vote at polling stations might have turned away after reading the requirements at the entrance but were not formally recorded, the Commission said. The figures are also based on incomplete data received from 226 of the 230 councils where polls were held this year. Voter ID backfired on Tories, says Rees-Mogg What photo ID do you need to vote? The policy will be widened to cover all UK elections, meaning it will apply to voters in the by-elections to replace Boris Johnson, Nigel Adams and David Warburton on 20 July. It is also set to be in force for the next general election, expected next year. Data collected by the Electoral Commission, the independent body that oversees elections, found "some correlation" between the numbers turned away and "specific socio-demographic factors, such as ethnicity and unemployment". Craig Westwood, director of communications at the commission, said "it is too soon to draw conclusions", but added "some of the emerging evidence is concerning". No cases of personation - where someone pretends to be another person, in order to vote - were reported during this year's elections. In 2022, there were 13 cases recorded by police, including seven at polling stations, none of which led to prosecutions. Research published by the commission on Friday found 0.7% of voters were initially turned away from polling stations in May. Around two-thirds of these returned later in the day and were able to vote. Labour's deputy leader Angela Rayner said the rules were having a "chilling effect on democracy". But Labour have stopped short of saying they would scrap the policy, with Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer calling for a "wide review" into the impact of Voter ID. "This is the first piece of evidence coming through, so we need to look at everything in the round," he said. Lib Dem spokesperson Helen Morgan said the policy "looks like a transparent attempt at voter suppression by Conservative ministers who are desperate to stop people from holding them to account". "It is an outrage that thousands of people were denied a voice at the local elections because of the Conservative Party's Voter ID rules," she added. Gerrymandering claim The government announced the voter ID move in 2021, arguing it would tackle voter fraud and boost public confidence in elections. Passports, driving licences and blue badges are among the IDs permitted. Only 25,000 of the 90,000 free Voter Authority Certificates applied for before May's election were used as a form of ID. There have been only a handful of convictions for electoral fraud in recent years - but ministers argue a lack of evidence could be masking the true level. They also point out that voter ID has been a requirement in Northern Ireland since 2003, as well as in many other European countries. Opposition parties voted against it, arguing it was unnecessary and would hit turnout among marginalised groups. Conservative MP Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg, who was in the Cabinet when the measure was introduced, recently said the voter ID policy had been an attempt at gerrymandering - fixing rules to gain electoral advantage. High awareness He said the measure had come "back to bite them," claiming his party's vote had been hit because older people, who were more likely to vote Tory, were also more likely to lack an accepted form of identity. Before the election, 87% of people in England were aware that they needed to show photo ID to vote at a polling station, according to a survey carried on behalf of the commission. The polling excluded London, which did not hold local elections in May. Mr Westwood said: "The evidence suggests that the vast majority of voters were able to present an accepted form of ID at the May elections. "But it also shows that some people were prevented from voting in polling stations due to the requirement, and significantly more did not attempt to because they lacked the required ID. "Overall awareness was high and achieved in a matter of months, but we can see that people who lacked ID were less likely to know they needed to show it. The commission plans to publish its full election report in September. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-65988959
  5. More than a dozen letters containing explosives or animal parts have been sent to Ukrainian diplomats around the world, according to Ukraine’s foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba. “This campaign is aimed at sowing fear,” Kuleba told CNN’s Matthew Chance in an exclusive interview in Kyiv on Friday. There have been 17 cases of embassies receiving either letter bombs, false bomb letters, or letters containing animals parts, like the eyes of cows and pigs, he added. CNN was shown an image of one of the letters containing what officials said was the eyeball of a pig inside a padded envelope. “It started with an explosion at the embassy of Ukraine in Spain,” Kuleba said. “But what followed this explosion was more weird, and I would even say sick.” Kuleba was referring to an explosion that occurred on Wednesday at Ukraine’s embassy in Madrid, injuring one Ukrainian employee who was handling a letter addressed to the country’s ambassador to Spain. Spanish officials said Thursday a letter bomb was also sent to the country’s prime minister last week and another to the US embassy. Kyiv’s embassies in Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Croatia, Italy, Austria, and the consulates general in Naples and Krakow, have also received suspicious packages, Oleh Nikolenko, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, said Friday on Facebook. The packages were “soaked in a liquid of a characteristic color and had a corresponding smell,” he said. “We are examining the meaning of this message.” Ukraine has put all of its overseas diplomatic stations under heightened security following the slew of suspicious mail. The Ukrainian Consulate in Brno, a city in the southeast of the Czech Republic, was briefly evacuated on Friday after receiving a suspicious package containing animal tissue, Czech police added in a tweet on Friday. When asked who he thought was behind the letters, Kuleba told CNN said, “I feel tempted to say, to name Russia straight away, because first of all you have to answer the question, who benefits?” He said that he thought that Russia was either directly responsible, or someone “who sympathizes [with] the Russian cause and tries to spread fear.” “The conclusion will be made by investigators, but I think these two versions make most of the sense.” CNN has reached out to the Kremlin for comment on the letters. Kuleba earlier urged foreign governments to guarantee maximum protection of Ukrainian diplomatic institutions in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. In addition to the suspicious packages, Nikolenko said the entrance to the Ambassador’s residence in the Vatican was vandalized and the Ukrainian Embassy in Kazakhstan received a report of a bomb threat, which was later not confirmed. Nikolenko also stated that the Ukrainian Embassy in the United States received a letter with a photocopy of a critical article about Ukraine. Most of the envelopes were sent from within Europe, he added. Czech police tweeted that the consulate in Brno and its immediate surroundings, including a kindergarten, were evacuated Friday. After investigating the package, the police said it did not contain any explosives, adding that they had no information to indicate people at the consulate or its vicinity were in any danger. “Initial analysis suggest the package contained animal tissue. A detailed analysis of will be conducted in laboratories now,” the police tweeted. https://edition.cnn.com/2022/12/02/europe/ukraine-embassies-suspicious-mail-intl/index.html
  6. Sunday, October 8, a great game was played in the Premier League between Arsenal and Manchester City, two of the teams fighting for the competition at the top of the classification table. The duel took place at the Emirates Stadium and was full of controversy. A high intensity match was expected from the start and the match did not disappoint. However, refereeing controversies marked the first half of the match, specifically due to a couple of actions with Kovacic as the protagonist. Mateo Kovacic, Manchester City footballer, starred in an incredible sequence of fouls in the first half of the duel against Arsenal that could have cost him expulsion. In the 28th minute, the Croatian made a strong tackle on Martin Odegaard, going with his raised foot straight to the Arsenal star's right ankle. The play was reviewed by the VAR due to a possible direct red card action, but finally the referee decided to give him a yellow card. After the referee's controversial decision, and if that were not enough, just five minutes later he again made a tough tackle, this time on Declan Rice. The new foul further tense the atmosphere at the Emirates Stadium, not because of the infraction itself, but because of the sequence that could have concluded their match. And on this occasion, they did not get the second yellow card, which could have been a direct red card again. https://www.marca.com/futbol/premier-league/2023/10/09/6523b8e4ca4741d64e8b45a3.html
  7. Most of us strive for a life where we feel we have real choices about how we spend our time and energy. But we get boggled in that pursuit – confused about where exactly we’re heading. Self-care has become a staple in our lives. From juice cleanses to yoga workshops, we are sold breezy fixes in pastel-coloured packages. This is faux self-care, but we are made to feel at fault when they don’t work. But we are not broken: the game is rigged against us. Research on wellbeing is divided into two theories of how to go about living a good life: the hedonic approach and the eudaimonic approach. Hedonic wellbeing focuses on the feeling states of happiness and pleasure. In many respects, faux self-care – the diets, the cleanses, the retreats, the life hacks – is aligned with this, with its focus on what feels good in the moment and escaping difficult situations. Don’t get me wrong – we all need escape once in a while, and the ability to do so is a privilege. But eudaimonic wellbeing, by contrast, focuses on actions congruent with our values; it is the feeling that our lives are imbued with purpose. Instead of prioritising pleasure, it emphasises personal growth, self acceptance, and connection to meaning. It is linked to improved sleep, longer lifespan and lower levels of inflammation. All the good stuff we’re looking for, right? Eudaimonic wellbeing focuses on actions congruent with our values Cultivating eudaimonic wellbeing isn’t straightforward. It looks different for everyone because achieving it depends on our personal beliefs and values. For some people, it means letting go of fitness goals and spending weekends volunteering. For others, it may mean switching to a career aligned with their values. But what is similar for most individuals is that each person is doing what matters to them and understands the meaning beneath how they spend their time. Far more than any wellness retreat, this is real self-care. The million-dollar question, of course, is how do we distinguish real self-care – the practices that lead us to eudaimonic wellbeing – from the coping mechanisms of faux self-care. At its core, real self-care is ultimately about decision-making. You must be assertive in prioritising your own needs and desires. To do that, you must learn to say no and to set boundaries. Balancing the needs of people close to you, like your partner’s preference or your children’s needs, with your own. You must learn to stop being controlled by feelings of guilt, which are inevitable. The next step is to look honestly at what you need (and what you want) and give yourself permission to have it. It’s a process of getting to know yourself, including your core values, beliefs and desires. It’s an internal decision-making process that requires introspection, honesty and perseverance. You’ll know you’re practising real self-care when it feels like your outsides are matching your insides. Real self-care, wherein you look inside yourself and make decisions from a place of reflection and consideration, is an assertion of power. It’s having the audacity to say: “I exist and I matter https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/apr/27/why-doesnt-self-care-and-pampering-make-me-feel-better
  8. Five American prisoners were freed by Iran on Monday in a Qatar-mediated deal that also included the transfer of some $6 billion in frozen Iranian funds and the release of five Iranian prisoners in the United States. The carefully choreographed agreement was years in the making and is being seen as a major diplomatic breakthrough for the two foes. But in a sign that the pact is no indication of a wider thaw in relations, a senior Biden administration official said the deal “has not changed our relationship with Iran in any way.” Soon after the American prisoners took off from Iran, the Biden administration slapped new sanctions on the regime. The prisoner deal is, however, an example of a new method of unwritten arrangements between Washington and Tehran, analysts say, where smaller mutual concessions are exchanged in the absence of a wider, formal agreement like the one reached in 2015 and abandoned by the Trump administration in 2018. A new, wide-ranging agreement may be difficult for both sides to achieve as the US heads to presidential elections in November 2024. Such a pact would likely face resistance from Congress, whose approval it would need. And from Iran’s perspective, efforts to forge a new pact with a US administration that could potentially be ousted in those elections would be futile if the next president abandons it. The Biden administration is unlikely to engage in “meaningful revival” of the 2015 nuclear deal, said Sanam Vakil, director of the Middle East and North Africa program at the Chatham House think tank in London. Instead, it has already agreed on an understanding that is unwritten, where Iran is rolling back (uranium) enrichment,” she said. “In exchange, the Biden administration is looking away and allowing Iran to increase its oil sales.” The deal comes amid a significant dialing back of tensions between Iran and the US in recent months. Attacks by Iran and its proxies on US interests in the Middle East have almost ceased, and Iran’s oil exports have risen despite Western sanctions on its oil industry. Meanwhile, Iran’s uranium enrichment under its nuclear program has reportedly slowed. Ali Vaez, Iran Project Director at the International Crisis Group think tank, said a de-escalatory understanding between Washington and Tehran has created a more stable context for progress, calling it a “no deal, no crisis status quo.” https://edition.cnn.com/2023/09/18/middleeast/iran-us-prisoner-deal-bad-blood-mime-intl/index.html

  10. The Battlefield 2042 Season 3 new map, Spearhead, arrives November 22, and while it’s a more muted and constrained space than many of the bombastic launch maps, it benefits from having a clearer focus and a year’s worth of trial and error underpinning it. We had a chance to go hands-on with Spearhead and some of the new Season 3 kit in EA/DICE’s military FPS game during a closed press event this week, and here are a few of our takeaways. Spearhead is set in the Swedish countryside, with five capture zones arranged in sequence along a stream. The rocky terrain provides natural dips and rises for vantage points and cover, and the stream itself channels the action into pathways along either side. In the central and easternmost zones are large weapons manufacturing facilities whose bay doors fold open as you approach them. It’s a map that’s purpose-built for smaller rounds of Breakthrough and Conquest. With the zones all arranged in a line along the river, you’re always either pushing forward or falling back, with the option to capture and hold one of the weapons facilities in zone C or E. Those buildings offer plenty of cover and corridors for close-quarters combat (the ideal environment for the new NVK-22 smart shotgun), and as natural focal points, there’s usually a battle popping off in at least one of them. Outside, I found the narrow layout of the map encouraged more natural team cohesion, particularly while playing in the assault role. As a recon specialist, I tried using the new Rorsch Mk-4 railgun to take out enemy troops I spotted running along the opposite bank of the stream. Outbuildings near the factories and at the western side of the map provide natural locations for pitched defences and intense firefights in Breakthrough. Spearhead will appeal to players who’ve felt a bit lost in some of Battlefield 2042’s more expansive maps like Renewal, Hourglass, or Kaleidoscope – in all of those, it can often feel as though the action is miles away from your position. Spearhead is no-nonsense, smaller and less vertical than Season 1’s Exposure, and it’s the first Battlefield 2042 map that lacks any over-the-top spectacle, be it an extreme weather event or dramatic action-movie transformation. That’s not a bad thing, though – especially if you’re a fan of straightforward meat-and-potatoes Battlefield action. If you haven’t dipped into it yet, you can play Battlefield 2042 free for a few days after the Battlefield 2042 Season 3 release date next week. 11. The Nvidia RTX 4080 is undeniably expensive, but there’s now an anime-inspired variant that costs more than the RTX 4090. While the graphics card wields a triple fan setup and higher clock speeds than the Founder’s Edition, you’ll seemingly have to pay a kawaii tax to grab hold of this aesthetically pleasing GPU. Created by MaxSun, the iCraft OC “Aijia Edition” RTX 4080 graphics card features an anime cat girl mascot emblazoned on the back. Images first shared by Videocardz also reveal a white shroud that’s clad in subtle RGB lighting, so you could potentially create one of the best gaming PC builds around while avoiding traditional black parts. Of course, this isn’t the first best graphics card contender to include an anime waifu, as the company’s character can be found on the back of the GeForce RTX 3070 iCraft OC. Nevertheless, the theme helps give the RTX 4080, as custom variants typically come with a brutalist shroud that’ll darken the inside of your PC case. MaxSun’s feline friend won’t help the RTX 4000 GPU boost fps, but it’s apparently factory overclocked. In theory, that should mean faster clock speeds than the card featured in our Nvidia RTX 4080 review, but the Chinese manufacturer hasn’t disclosed specific specs. It’s worth noting that MaxSun GPUs are typically only available in China, and it’ll cost you at least $1,687 USD to import one. Again, that’s more than an RTX 4090, but if you’re aiming for a specific gaming PC aesthetic, it might be worth the extra expense. https://www.pcgamesn.com/nvidia/rtx-4080-anime-graphics-card
  12. Microsoft’s embarrassing Windows 11 printer fail finally gets fixed – but is it too late? By Darren Allan published about 3 hours ago Windows 11 printer nightmare has at least now been resolved for good Microsoft has officially marked a frustrating printer bug as resolved, and those folks who were being blocked from upgrading to Windows 11 22H2 due to the compatibility issue will doubtless be pleased to hear that. You might recall this seriously troublesome bug that emerged in late September 2022, forcing printers to revert to their default settings. By default, many important features weren’t available – we’re talking about printing in duplex, higher resolutions, and maybe even color, which could obviously be major stumbling blocks. The good news is that as Neowin(opens in new tab) spotted, Microsoft officially marked the issue as resolved just a few days ago (November 18). In actual fact, the safeguard blocking devices which could run into this bug was removed a week previously – therefore allowing those machines to update to Windows 11 22H2 – though it could still take some time for the upgrade to come through. At this point, though, any machine with a connected printer that could fall prey to this bug should be able to go ahead and upgrade to 22H2 successfully without waiting. Microsoft observed(opens in new tab): “Any printer still affected by this issue should now get resolved automatically during upgrade to Windows 11, version 22H2.” Analysis: A rocky road, for sure This has been a bit of a rocky road for those with an affected printer wishing to upgrade to Windows 11 22H2, of course, as the bug has hung around for quite some time. As noted, it was two months ago that it first came to our attention, so this has hardly been a quick fix. With a lot of questions being asked about the prevalence of Windows 10 bugs in the past, and now Windows 11 apparently continuing with a worrying amount of problems in terms of quality assurance, the whole affair isn’t a great look for Microsoft. Yes, we’ve banged this drum many times, but we’ll continue to do so while bugs like this printer-related gremlin – or other flaws such as File Explorer crashing or slowing down Windows 11 PCs – are still popping up far too often for our liking. If you’ve been suffering at the hands of a gremlin in the works with Microsoft’s latest OS, be sure to check out our guide to solving common problems with Windows 11. https://www.techradar.com/news/microsofts-embarrassing-windows-11-printer-fail-finally-gets-fixed-but-is-it-too-late
