The International Court of Justice has ruled against issuing emergency orders to stop Germany's arms sales to Israel. Nicaragua brought the case, arguing that Germany had breached the UN genocide convention by sending military hardware to Israel. The German government said the lawsuit was unjustified. Berlin is a staunch ally of Israel and the second largest supplier of arms to the country after the US. A final ruling could take years. Today's decision was over emergency measures to be implemented swiftly. In 2023 some 30% of Israel's military equipment purchases came from Germany, totalling $326.5m (£257m) last year - a tenfold increase on 2022. Nicaragua said Germany's arms sales to Israel made it complicit in Israel's alleged war crimes. Israel has rejected accusations of genocide and says its actions in Gaza are focussed on destroying Hamas. The Central American country had brought the case to the Hague in early March to ask judges to issue emergency measures to stop Berlin from providing Israel with weapons and other assistance. It also said Germany had breached the UN genocide convention by ceasing funding of the UN's aid agency, UNRWA. Germany was one of 15 Western nations which suspended funding for UNRWA over allegations that some of the agency's staff were involved in the 7 October attacks on Israel. Writing on X following the court's verdict, the German ministry of foreign affairs welcomed the decision and said Germany was "not a party to the conflict in the Middle East". It added that Germany was the largest donor of humanitarian aid to the Palestinians and that it was working "urgently" to ensure that aid reaches the people of Gaza. Presiding Judge Nawaf Salam said the ICJ - which ruled 15-1 - remains "deeply concerned about the catastrophic living conditions of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip". The court will now have to decide whether it has jurisdiction over the case. If so, it will then proceed to judge the case itself - which could take years. Nicaragua - a longtime supporter of the Palestinian cause - likely decided to take Germany to court as Germany is the second-largest arms exporter to Israel. The US, which provides Israel with a much higher volume of weapons, does not recognise the ICJ's compulsory jurisdiction. Critics of Nicaragua's case have highlighted the country's chequered human rights record. The government of President Daniel Ortega has jailed opponents and banned protests. In March, the UK's mission to the UN accused the government of a "relentless" crackdown on human rights. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-68929873

Aston Martin has revealed the first details about its new twin-turbocharged V-12, which is rated at 824 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. Aston says the hand-built V-12 is completely redesigned, featuring a stronger engine block as well as a revised cylinder block, fuel system, and valvetrain. More details about the new V-12 are still to come, and Aston says it'll power a forthcoming flagship that'll debut later this year—possibly a DBS successor. As more and more V-12 engines approach their expiration date, Aston Martin is preparing to introduce a fresh one. The British marque today revealed the first details about its new twin-turbocharged 12-cylinder, which it says is completely redesigned. Not only that, but the hand-built mill will make 824 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque, meaning it's a lot more powerful than the 5.2-liter V-12 it will replace. The outgoing version of Aston's V-12 peaked with the 759-hp engine under the long hood of the DBS 770 Ultimate, which both retired that generation and represented the most powerful production car the company has ever built. Obviously, that title will be broken when the new V-12 arrives. To tease the reveal, Aston released a short video of what it's calling the "Dawn of a new V-12 era." Among the myriad changes that were made to the upcoming V-12 are a stronger engine block and connecting rods. The cylinder heads have also been redesigned, and Aston says there are higher-speed, reduced-inertia turbochargers. The valvetrain receives revised camshaft profiles as well as new intake and exhaust ports. The V-12's fuel system will feature injectors with a higher flow rate, and the spark plugs have also been repositioned. Aston has previously said it remains committed to building 12-cylinder engines until 2026. The introduction of this new V-12 verifies that promise. And Aston says it'll debut in a new flagship model that'll break cover sometime later this year. At that time, we'll also learn more technical details about the engine that weren't included in today's reveal like its displacement. As expected, the company says the new V-12 will be built by hand in a limited capacity on a year-by-year basis. The other big question is what will Aston's new flagship be. The teaser video includes the tagline "All will be vanquished," which might suggest to some that it'll be the next-gen Vanquish, which was once going to be a mid-engined hybrid hypercar. However, we think that tagline is likely just a red herring, as Aston has since publicly confirmed that the mid-engined Vanquish has been cancelled. Instead, we think the brand's next V-12 will power a DBS successor based on the new Aston Martin DB12. Only time will tell. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60639518/aston-martin-new-824-hp-v-12-flagship-engine/

Po[CENSORED]rly termed as a Japanese rock garden, a Zen garden is perfect place to relax and wind down. Here's how it helps center yourself and scout for inner peaceHuman beings have a distinctive requisite to unite with nature and this longing only grows stronger when we reside in urban settings as for this reason, most city dwellers build and preserve gardens in their personal spaces to revel in nature amidst the concrete jungle and one type of garden that has gained significance in current years is the Zen garden. A Zen garden is focused on the careful arrangements of rocks, sand and plants and this type of green space helps in encouraging contemplation and calmness. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Vick Rana, Chairman at Stone Sapphire India Pvt Ltd, shared, “Also po[CENSORED]rly termed as a Japanese rock garden, a Zen garden is a perfect place to relax and wind down but it’s also so much more than that. The moment you visit a Zen garden, all you can soak in is the serenity and stillness that comes with it. A Zen garden is more than just a visually pleasing outdoor space; it’s a place that can retune your mood and recover your emotive wellness. It really does not matter if the space is open and roomy or is small in size, at its core, a Zen garden is a place to help you centre yourself and scout for your inner peace.” https://www.hindustantimes.com/lifestyle/art-culture/take-your-worries-away-how-zen-garden-can-become-your-daily-dose-of-mindfulness-101714569803928.html

A male swan left companionless after his nesting mate was shot dead a week ago has bonded with a fellow rescuee. The swan was found with a single shot to her neck on the waterside off Weston Parade, Netley Abbey, near Southampton. The swan's five eggs, which will not hatch, and her mate were taken in on 23 April by charity Swan Support. The charity said he was "doing well all things considered ... enjoying the company of others and has taken a shine to one of the ladies in our care." The charity said after collecting the shot swan from the tide pool it sought permission to take the male and the eggs into care. "Despite it being his home, his safety was paramount and our fear was that he could too be targeted," the charity said. A fundraising page has been set up by a resident to raise a reward of £2,000 for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for shooting the swan and to support the male swan's care at the charity. To date it has raised just over £1,300. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said is was investigating and urged witnesses and anyone with information to come forward. The charity, based in Datchet, Berkshire, said: "The local community, like us, are both angry and heartbroken and want to see this properly investigated, the offender caught and justice served." It said volunteers had attended more than 20 separate incidents since the end of last year with no arrests made. Posting on its Facebook page, the charity said it had written "again to MPs and the Police Crime Commissioners in the areas we attend asking for more to be done". https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-hampshire-68934872

Harry Kane has revealed Jude Bellingham said "you're going to go left of the keeper" as the Real Madrid midfielder tried to put off his England team-mate before the Bayern Munich forward took his penalty in the Champions League semi-final. Bellingham could be seen mumbling something to Kane as the Bayern striker stepped up to take the spot-kick in the 57th minute of the first leg. However the England captain placed his penalty to the right of goalkeeper Andriy Lunin to give Bayern a 2-1 lead at Allianz Arena - although Vinicius Jr later also converted from the spot as the match ended all square. Kane said afterwards he did not hear what Bellingham said on the pitch but that the 20-year-old told him after the match. “In the moment, I didn’t know what he said but I spoke to him after and he said: ‘I know you’re going to go left of the keeper'. "On the pitch, I knew he was there but I didn’t know what he said. But I went left anyway. “It was nice for me because I saw the keeper go a little bit early and I put it away." It was Kane's 43rd goal in 43 games in all competitions this season and helps Bayern in their aim of finishing the season on a high, with the Champions League the only trophy they remain in contention for. Kane left Tottenham last summer for an initial £86m in the hope of winning trophies with 11-time Bundesliga champions Bayern. But Bayer Leverkusen have already halted that run while Thomas Tuchel's side were knocked out of the German Cup in the second round by third-tier side Saarbrucken. The first leg leaves the tie finely balanced for the return on Wednesday at the Bernabeu to decide who goes to the final on 1 June at Wembley. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/c9rzn35e2dko

Among the armour here is a British Army Husky tactical support vehicle which had been donated to Ukraine. Its windscreen is covered in bullet-holes. Opposite the Husky I can see Western tanks that had been transferred to the Ukrainian military. There's an American Abrams which had been damaged on the battlefield. A German Leopard tank, too. In fact, there's a long line of German armour. And above it a sign: "History is repeating itself." The Russian authorities want the public to think that the war in Ukraine and World War Two have a common denominator: Russia as the victim, under attack from enemies abroad. In reality, the two wars are very different. In 1941 Germany invaded Russia. In 2022 Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The war trophy exhibition is packed out. In bright sunshine Russians are crowding round the military hardware, posing for photographs in front of tank gun barrels and, from the sounds of it, thoroughly enjoying the display. "It's incredible. Jaw-dropping," says Natalya, who's here with her husband and small daughter. "It's amazing to think that our guys managed to get these trophies." The Russians have not invented the wheel here. In the past Ukraine has displayed Russian military hardware that had been captured by the Ukrainian army. But for the Russian authorities, this exhibition has, I believe, several key objectives. The first is to reinforce the Kremlin's narrative that, in Ukraine, Nato - and the West as a whole - are waging war on Russia. The aim here is to demonise the West yet further in the minds of Russians. In reality, it was Russia that invaded Ukraine: something Western leaders had urged Moscow not to do. It was President Vladimir Putin's personal decision to launch what Russia still refers to as the "special military operation" in Ukraine. With supplies of arms and ammunition, the West came to Kyiv's defence. It does not seek to destroy Russia, despite what Russian officials may claim. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-68934205

After a rather tumultuous week for the Escape From Tarkov community, where developers Battlestate Games managed to wipe out years of goodwill in one fell swoop, a new game has rocked up, and it's looking to swipe some angry fans. The main problem arose from Battlestate releasing a new DLC, for which they charged extra even for players who had already bought the $150 Edge of Darkness (EoD) Edition, which was meant to cover all future DLCs. After a confusing debacle, Battlestate finally reneged on EoD owners having to pay extra for the DLC, but it still admitted that there isn't the server capacity to accommodate everyone. In the wake of all of this a new contender entered the playing field: Gray Zone Warfare is a rival extraction shooter with a similar unforgiving nature contrasted with a tropical setting and a less specific military contractor vibe. It launched in early access today, and so far, it has seen some impressive numbers. Gray Zone Warfare is currently sitting at the top of Steam's best sellers, beating the newly released city builder Manor Lords and the ever present CS2. But unfortunately that hasn't translated to user reviews very well: It has a mostly negative review score on its Steam page, sitting at 33% at time of writing. While some of the top comments are slating Tarkov, many more explain some fundamental problems with this FPS. The top review, with over 1,000 people finding it helpful, simply says, "at least it doesn't cost 250 dollars." There are a couple more touching on Tarkov's recent monetisation problems, but these are no longer the majority. Many more are reporting that the game's performance is pretty awful. Even with everything at minimum one comment says that it's "barely running 60fps," and that's with a 3080 Ti. Another comment rebukes the comparison to Tarkov, saying, "Gray Zone Warfare is like No Man's Sky 1.0 on PS4 compared to Tarkov." Most players just say that everything is clunky and the movement feels slow; you can't even sprint and strafe at the same time. Although Gray Zone Warfare is in early access so things may not be perfect straight away. Tarkov has certainly had a rough time recently, and for good reason, but even so it doesn't look like all that community outrage will transfer to players for Gray Zone Warfare, at least not in its current state. https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/gray-zone-warfare-tops-steams-best-sellers-partly-thanks-to-disgruntled-tarkov-players-at-least-it-doesnt-cost-250-dollars/

After losing everything in a poker game, you find yourself, the poorest of pilgrims, living in a tent deep in the woods. But you’re not about to give up yet; you’re sure you can better your fortune if only you can make some deals with the local townsfolk. Of course, you’ll have to puzzle out their requests as everyone in Pilgrims talks gibberish. Pilgrims: A Whimsic al World Pilgrims is a simplistic mobile adventure title in which you explore a whimsical hand-drawn world. You start as a lonesome pilgrim sporting a cowboy hat and a thick black mustache. However, as you play, you can win over new friends who will join you on your adventure. The game is divided into scenes that you can travel between by choosing a destination on the map. You’ll watch miniatures of your current party flitting across the map. When you tap a scene that you can enter, the destination flag will turn orange. Some scenes aren't as easy to spot on the map as others, so be sure to tap various spots to make sure you don't miss anything. Different characters are equipped to complete different tasks. Granny is able to garner more sympathy from the shopkeeper than your mother characters while the Rogue can complete feats of strength. Therefore, adding them to your party is essential to progressing through the game. Each member of your party is represented as a card at the bottom of the screen, as are all the items in your inventory. To choose a character object to add to the current scene, select its card and drag it upward. Best P&C adventure games on Android As you play, you’ll want to collect any item you can as everything you collect can be used to solve one puzzle or another. Refreshingly, there are multiple ways to solve puzzles and move through the game, so you can really get creative and play your own way. This charming adventure title also features entirely hand-drawn graphics that lend it a novel aesthetic. The game also features 45 achievements to unlock. It’s unlikely that you’ll unlock them all in one playthrough. Considering this, coupled with the fact you can complete quests in multiple ways, Pilgrims is one game you’ll want to play through at least twice. https://www.pocketgamer.com/pilgrims/review/

When Donald Trump sits at the defence table in the wood-panelled Manhattan courtroom over the next several weeks, he will be joined by a cast of characters who could feature in a Hollywood blockbuster. Opening statements in the first criminal trial of a former US president were heard on Monday. There are a slate of intriguing potential witnesses, including an adult film actress, a fixer-turned-star-witness, a loyal money-man convicted of tax fraud and others. A white-collar defence lawyer who has bet his career on defending Mr Trump is leading the former president's defence team. Meanwhile, Manhattan's first black district attorney has assembled a crack team of Manhattan prosecutors who are very familiar with Mr Trump and his organisation. And the entire case is overseen by a seasoned New York Supreme Court judge who is well aware of Mr Trump's courtroom troubles and behaviour. Mr Trump faces 34 charges of falsifying business records to disguise a hush-money payment to a woman with whom he allegedly had an affair. He has pleaded not guilty and denies having the affair. Below are the central players to know in the historic case. Justice Juan Merchan - the seasoned New York jurist - has previously spent time with Mr Trump in a Manhattan courtroom. He presided over the Trump Organization's tax fraud case that resulted in a hefty fine and jail time for the company's chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg. That means the judge is well acquainted with Mr Trump's orbit and his courtroom tactics to delay, deny and deflect. That behaviour will likely draw Justice Merchan's ire. While he may be soft-spoken, he has earned the reputation of being a no-nonsense jurist. He has already shut down Mr Trump once during jury selection. Meanwhile, Mr Trump has claimed on social media that "there has virtually never been a more conflicted judge than this one", and he has attacked Justice Merchan's daughter - who is employed by a firm that works with Democrats. Mr Trump has since been barred from speaking about the judge's family. The Manhattan prosecutors Alvin Bragg - the Manhattan district attorney - became the first black man to lead the Manhattan District Attorney's office when he was elected in November 2021. He took over the investigation into Mr Trump and announced that his office would bring felony charges against the former president last April. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-68861539

Bentley revealed the Bentayga Apex Edition, which, as the name suggests, is a new special edition of its luxury SUV. The Apex Edition gets a special look, carbon-fiber wheels, and carbon-ceramic brakes to save weight. Production of the new special edition Bentayga is being limited to just 20 units worldwide with a subset being offered to owners of the Continental GT Le Mans Edition in matching trim and livery. Special-edition luxury models are a dime a dozen these days, and two weeks after revealing the Bentayga Black Edition, Bentley's got another one with the new Bentayga Apex Edition. Bentley took the nearly 5500-pound luxobarge and removed weight where it could. So it's basically a Miata, right? Not quite. The Apex Edition sheds roughly 97 pounds compared with the standard Bentayga S. Half of that saved weight comes thanks to the 10-spoke 22-inch carbon-fiber wheels. The other half comes from a new set of performance-oriented carbon-ceramic brake rotors. Looks-wise, Bentley's in-house Mulliner team came up with six curated liveries—though the automaker will also welcome the creation of a bespoke model, assuming your wallet can handle it. All six Mulliner-designed models come with a racing stripe extending from nose to tail over the hood and roof of the car. Buyers of last year's Bentley Continental GT Le Mans edition cars will be given the opportunity to order a Bentayga Apex Edition in matching trim and livery. As for specifics, there are new spoilers on the front and rear, while the sills and mirror caps are finished in carbon fiber. There's an abundance of carbon fiber inside the Apex Edition, with the material spanning the dash and covering the center console. Lest you forget which special edition you're in, Bentley kindly labeled the Apex Edition with special badging inside and out. Power is sourced from Bentley's 542-hp twin-turbocharged V-8. The slightly heavier standard Bentayga S can sprint to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. Considering the Apex Edition only shaves 1.8 percent off the Bentayga S's curb weight, we don't really expect the limited-edition version will be quicker in any meaningful way. Production will be limited to a mere 20 units globally. Bentley was mum on pricing, but we're sure the special edition will fetch quite a bit more than the V-8 Bentayga S's $243,025 starting price. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60638810/2024-bentley-bentayga-apex-edition/

China lifts ban on Fujian tourists to Taiwan, signals easing cross-strait relations amid political shiftChina has lifted the ban on tourists from Fujian province visiting Taiwan, Nikkei Asia reported citing China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism on Sunday.According to the report, China's Vice Minister Rao Quan announced the eased restrictions to a visiting delegation from Taiwan's main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), which seeks closer ties with China. The move comes ahead of the ceremonial induction of Taiwanese President-elect William Lai to office, whom China calls a separatist. Nikkei Asia reported that travel would first be permitted to Taiwan's Matsu islands, close to the Fujian coast, with group tours to restart once ferry service resumes between Fujian's Pingtan and Taiwan's main island. China imposed tourism restrictions on individual travel by residents from the mainland, including Fujian, in 2019. Cross-strait relations deteriorated after the 2016 election of Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, whose Democratic Progressive Party opposes unification with China in favour of the status quo. Lai is now vice president under the term-limited Tsai and ran as the DPP's presidential candidate in 2024. https://www.hindustantimes.com/lifestyle/travel/china-lifts-ban-allows-tourists-from-fujian-province-to-visit-taiwan-101714481390628.html
