  6. Arizona has indicted a number of former President Donald Trump's advisers over an alleged scheme to flip his defeat in the state and overturn the 2020 election result. Ex-Trump advisers Rudi Giuliani and Mark Meadows were among 18 indicted on counts including conspiracy and fraud. Arizona is the fourth US state to file criminal charges in a "fake elector" scheme. Mr Trump himself is not charged in the alleged Arizona plot. The names of seven defendants are redacted in the indictment made public on Wednesday which does name 11 others. Although Mr Giuliani and Mr Meadows, Mr Trump's former chief of staff, are not named, the redacted defendants are referred to in a manner that exposes their identity. The Arizona prosecutor's office said the redacted names would be made public after all the defendants were formally presented with the charges. The court documents also list a "former US president" - believed to be Mr Trump - as an unindicted co-conspirator. The list of those named includes several current and former officials, such as Kelli Ward, the former chairwoman of the Arizona Republican Party, and her husband Michael Ward. Two serving state lawmakers - Anthony Kern and Jake Hoffman - are among those charged. Mr Hoffman told CBS News, the BBC's US partner, that he was innocent of the charges and victim of "naked political persecution by the judicial process". An Arizona grand jury had agreed to the indictments after a year-long investigation. Announcing the charges on Wednesday evening, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, a Democrat, said in a video statement: "I'll not allow American democracy to be undermined - it's too important." "The scheme, had it succeeded, would have deprived Arizona voters of their right to their votes counted for their chosen president," she continued. "It would have effectively made their right to vote meaningless." Mr Biden won the state by 10,457 votes. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-68893365
  7. The cycle of misery that has held Everton in its icy grip for so long was released on a night of passion and fury at Goodison Park that may have applied the final blow to Liverpool’s Premier League title challenge. If a first Merseyside derby home win since October 2010 was not cause enough for celebration for Everton, their 2-0 triumph came with what they will regard as the glorious bonus of inflicting potentially irreparable damage to Liverpool. This much was clear as the famous old stadium echoed to the taunts of “You Lost The League At Goodison Park” as a leggy, lack-lustre Liverpool banged their heads on the brick wall that was Everton’s defence and outstanding goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. It was 39 years to the night since what is widely regarded as the most famous evening in Goodison Park’s history when Bayern Munich were overpowered in the European Cup Winners’ Cup semi-final. This win, of course, does not even touch that significance but this will be a night Everton fans will remember for a long time and Liverpool will want to forget – and if they do forget they will find plenty of a royal blue persuasion happy to remind them. Everton flew at Liverpool from the first whistle, roared on in an atmosphere that might just be impossible to replicate when they leave this stadium. Jurgen Klopp’s side had chances after Jarrad Branthwaite’s 27th-minute opener and following Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s headerto make it 2-0 just before the hour, especially when Luis Diaz struck an upright. But there was no coming back. Klopp’s downbeat demeanour in his post-match media briefing told the story after his first derby defeat at Goodison Park. He was certainly not throwing the towel in, and rightly so, but he wore the look of someone who knew the game may well be up. Liverpool are still only three points behind leaders Arsenal but their form is going into reverse and the Gunners’ goal difference is so superior it is effectively worth another point. Amid the joyous scenes at the final whistle, there is every chance Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and Manchester City counterpart Pep Guardiola may also have been allowing themselves a smile. And it was a game that also left two big questions. Where has this Everton been for large portions of another season of struggle? And what has happened to Liverpool, especially those tasked with scoring goals, with even Mohamed Salah misfiring miserably once again? Darwin Nunez must be trying the patience of the Liverpool supporters who have stood by him so long. The chaos that sustained him despite his habit of missing chances is now narrowed down and being replaced by just the missed chances. Even Virgil van Dijk was unsettled, throwing his arms out in disgust as Calvert-Lewin soared behind him for Everton’s second goal. Liverpool pressed on but not with conviction or urgency, almost resigned to their fate – something which could not be said often in Klopp’s reign. Even the manager himself raised eyebrows with his substitutions, taking off Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson and replacing them with Joe Gomez and Kostas Tsimikas when Liverpool needed goals. Klopp must lift his players for the weekend visit to West Ham United but they must also find something they have lost in recent weeks if they are to have even the slightest chance of regrouping to challenge Arsenal and Manchester City. Liverpool looked like a side who have gone to the well too often, with two losses and a draw in their past four league games, minds scrambled by the way Everton set about them, with Calvert-Lewin showing what manager Sean Dyche has missed when the striker is at his best. And what of Everton? Barely a week after a 6-0 humbling at Chelsea they were a team transformed, the sight of Liverpool like a red rag to a bull. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/c6pywzp3720o
  8. From ibis to hyenas, a surprising variety of scavengers have been drawn to urban life. Here's how they're thriving in cities across the globe. On the road to Cape Point Nature Reserve, on the outskirts of the South African city of Cape Town, each day people must run the gauntlet of a gang with a habit of "car-jacking". The culprits are notorious – perhaps known as much for the occasional vehicle break-in, as they are for their potently smelly breath. They are, in fact, baboons. And they have taken to life among people with surprising zeal. Further into the city, marauding troops of the primates have learned to raid bins and even invade homes, in the search for an easy meal. The scavengers have become so prolific, there is now a 24-hour baboon hotline, where residents can report offences, as well as welfare concerns. Of course, baboons are not the only wildlife that has been drawn to humanity's urban sprawl. Across the planet, the original inhabitants of areas now occupied by cities have been standing their ground and learning to thrive, alongside millions of people. Here are some of the extraordinary transformations that have been unfolding. Each night, as dusk settles over cities throughout Europe, red foxes emerge from their hiding places and begin stalking the streets. Sometimes they saunter confidently along, mingling seamlessly with human pedestrians. Occasionally it's just possible to glimpse the whip of a fluffy tail, as one dives into a bin. These adaptable omnivores will forage for wild foods such as berries and insects, supplementing this with freshly-caught pigeons and scraps found in rubbish. There are at least ten different kinds of "true" fox scattered throughout the planet, from the strange bat-eared fennec fox, to the charismatic Tibetan sand fox. And they have been living among people for millennia – in 1991, researchers unearthed the ancient bones of an individual in Argentina, which recent research has revealed may have been a pet. Today, foxes are thriving in urban areas, with 18 per square kilometre (45 per square mile) in London alone. They're also found in cities in the US, particularly in the northern and eastern parts of the country. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20240423-the-scavengers-stalking-the-worlds-cities

  10. For 2025, BMW has revealed a facelift for the electric i4 sedan and the gas-powered 4-series Gran Coupe. The four-cylinder 4-series Gran Coupe adds a 48-volt hybrid system for the first time, and a revised setup gives the six-cylinder M440i an extra 4 hp. Other changes include redesigned headlights and taillights, a new kidney grille, and a slightly updated interior. The i4 and 4-series Gran Coupe each earn new headlights and taillights, with the low- and high-beams now housed in a single LED module. As a special bonus, the new headlights perform an animation once the key is within 10 feet of the car, welcoming the driver. Swinging around to the back of the cars, M Sport package-equipped versions of both models feature a rear diffuser that is now finished in gloss black. Mechanically, the changes are pretty light, but the Gran Coupe models in particular get a revised 48-volt hybrid system, adding the technology to the base turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder for the first time. Despite the addition of the hybrid, the turbo four in the 430i model continues with an identical 255 horsepower. The more powerful M440i is a different story, with the 48-volt setup adding 11 horsepower to the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six. The updated system brings the combined output to 386 horsepower, marking a 4-hp improvement versus before. Inside, the changes are pretty minimal. Both models earn BMW's updated iDrive 8.5 software, which unfortunately moves controls for the climate control system, heated seats, and heated steering wheel into the system's touchscreen. The i4 and 4-series Gran Coupe also gain updated cabin materials, with new brushed-aluminum trim and two new open-pore wood options joining the options list The i4 also gets a unique update with a new plug-and-charge system that can store up to five contracts, allowing you to pay for multiple public charging networks directly from your i4. BMW says both models are slated to start production in July, with pricing to come closer to their on-sale dates. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60583892/2025-bmw-i4-ev-4-series-gran-coupe-updated-details/
  11. Ukraine has begun using long-range ballistic missiles secretly provided by the US against invading Russian forces, American officials have confirmed. The weapons were part of a $300m (£240m) aid package approved by US President Joe Biden in March and they arrived this month. They have already been used at least once to strike Russian targets in occupied Crimea, US media report. Mr Biden has now signed a new $61bn package of aid for Ukraine. The US previously supplied Ukraine with a mid-range version of the Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) but had been reluctant to send anything more powerful, partly over concerns about compromising US military readiness. However, Mr Biden is said to have secretly given the green light to send the long-range system - which can fire missiles distances of up to 300km (186 miles) - in February. "I can confirm that the United States provided Ukraine with long-range ATACMS at the president's direct direction," state department spokesman Vedant Patel said. The US "did not announce this at the onset in order to maintain operational security for Ukraine at their request", he added. It is not clear how many of the weapons have already been sent, but US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said Washington planned to send more. "They will make a difference. But as I've said before at this podium... there is no silver bullet," he said. The longer-range missiles were used for the first time last week to strike a Russian airfield in occupied Crimea, Reuters news agency quoted an unnamed US official as saying. And the new missiles were also used in an attack on Russian troops in the occupied port city of Berdyansk overnight on Tuesday, according to the New York Times. Recent months have seen Kyiv step up its calls for Western assistance as its stocks of ammunition are depleted and Russia makes steady gains. The new aid package follows months of gridlock amid opposition to the aid from some in Congress. "It's going to make America safer, it's going to make the world safer," Mr Biden said after signing it into law. Reacting to the package, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said: "Now we will do everything to make up for half a year spent in debates and doubts. "What the Russian occupier was able to do during this time, what Putin is now planning, we must turn against him." Mr Zelensky recently warned that a Russian offensive was expected in the coming weeks after Ukraine's loss of the city of Avdiivka during the winter. Ukrainian forces have suffered from a shortage of ammunition and air defence systems in recent months and officials have blamed delays in military aid from the US and other Western allies for the loss of lives and territory. Mr Sullivan said on Wednesday it was "certainly possible that Russia could make additional tactical gains in the coming weeks". https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-68893196

  12. Ah, so you watched the Fallout show and caught the Bethesda bug too. Instead of starting another Fallout 4 playthrough like half of my friends list, I've opted to give Fallout 76 a fair shake after noping out of it six years ago. If you're doing the same, then you'll notice a lot has changed. The main quest has been completely reworked with new branching storylines starring NPCs and factions, but one of the bigger changes comes as soon as you leave the vault. Before you've taken your first step in Appalachia, Fallout 76 asks you to make a big choice: Start as a fresh level 2 vault dweller, or boost immediately up to level 20 as a "battle ready" dweller. I was really hesitant to take the boost at first—I was worried skipping ahead was an option intended for long-time players making a second character, and that going down that road would mean skipping introductory quests. Turns out that's not the case at all. Choosing the level 20 option doesn't lock you out of any quests whatsoever, or even meaningfully change your challenge level, since enemies generally scale to your level no matter what. What a battle ready loadout does get you is a big headstart on perk cards, Fallout 76's primary progression path. You can choose between five presets that immediately set you up with some pretty great beginner perks and gear: Ah, so you watched the Fallout show and caught the Bethesda bug too. You can choose between five presets that immediately set you up with some pretty great beginner perks and gear: I can see why the level 20 boost option has a "best choice" sticker slapped on it. It's a more energetic start to a shooter-MMO with lots of grinding, though the influx of perk cards and level-up pop ups immediately after you choose it is a momentary sensory nightmare. Just know that leveling in 76 isn't like the mainline game: you can move around your cards whenever you want, and even respec your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. points eventually (I'm not there yet). The preset loadouts come with different weapon specializations, but they all have a few useful perk cards in common: they all have Traveling Pharmacy and First Aid, for instance, which makes stimpaks weigh less and heal more. It's also worth noting that level 20 in Fallout 76 is not the mid-game milestone it is in Fallouts 4, 3, and New Vegas. I pored over my cool perk cards and extended barrel revolver for all of two minutes before I was humbled by a level 408 passing player in decked-out power armor and legendary guns so beyond my meager station that all light appeared to bend around them like that super rich guy in Disco Elysium. Level 20 here might as well be taking short hop to level 5 in past games. Several game systems don't even unlock until level 50. Guess I should get to it, then. https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fallout/dont-worry-youre-not-missing-out-by-boosting-straight-to-level-20-in-fallout-76/

  15. Motorola has once again teased the elusive Moto X50 Ultra, which could bring multiple new generative artificial intelligence (AI) features compared to the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra. The company first mentioned the smartphone in February in a Weibo post. Recently, the AI smartphone was again teased in a video where the brand also mentioned the F1 Grand Prix event China hosted on Sunday. The post led to the belief that the smartphone might be unveiled during or after the event. But that wasn't the case. Some reports have suggested that the Moto X50 Ultra could be launched in May. The company teased the smartphone in two different Weibo posts (via GSMArena) on April 20. In the first post, an image of the smartphone next to a poster for the F1 Grand Prix event was shared. Notably, Lenovo, the parent company of Motorola, is one of the sponsors of the event. In the post, the brand said (translated via Google), “Feel the speed and passion with #motoX50 Ultra AI mobile phone #motoAI coming soon.” Motorola also posted another video post showing the smartphone from different angles and a snapshot of the Grand Prix event with the caption “shot on #motoX50 Ultra AI”. Based on the design, the handset looks identical to the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra, which was launched globally last week. It was also showcased in a wood back panel option, which is also available for the Edge 50 Ultra. Despite the similar design, it is possible that the X50 Ultra could have some internal changes. Further, Motorola is teasing the smartphone as an “AI phone”, the first for the brand. The company has shipped its Edge 50 Ultra handset with some generative AI features such as a wallpaper generator and used AI to make camera adjustments. However, the phone was not marketed as an AI smartphone. This has led to the belief that the Moto X50 Ultra might bring more AI features and accompanying hardware.Launched globally last week, the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra features a 6.7-inch full-HD+ (1,220 x 2,712 pixels) pOLED display with 144Hz refresh rate and 2,500 nits of peak brightness. Under the hood, it is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset paired with up to 16GB of LPDDR5x RAM and up to 1TB of UFS 4.0 onboard storage. It sports a triple rear camera setup with a 50-megapixel primary sensor with optical image stabilisation (OIS), a 50-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and a 64-megapixel telephoto shooter. https://www.gadgets360.com/mobiles/news/moto-x50-ultra-design-teaser-generative-ai-features-5504176#pfrom=topstory

  18. The underbelly of New York City's tabloid media industry was laid bare in a Manhattan courtroom on Tuesday. A famous publisher outlined a secret plan he had with Donald Trump and his personal lawyer Michael Cohen, calling it an "agreement among friends". Prosecutors questioned former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker for nearly three hours. He testified that the three worked to suppress negative stories about the candidate during his 2016 campaign. "'This could be a very big story, so I believe that it should be removed from the market'," Mr Pecker said he would advise the former president about killing certain articles. Mr Pecker's testimony could prove critical for prosecutors as they seek to prove that Mr Trump tried to influence the election by quelling a story of an alleged affair. Mr Trump has pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records. Prosecutors allege he tried to cover up a $130,000 (£104,500) payment to porn star Stormy Daniels before he won the race for the White House back in 2016. Continuing his testimony from Monday as the trial's first witness, Mr Pecker said he met Mr Trump in the late 1980s and eventually became good friends with the former president. The two had a mutually "beneficial" relationship, in which Mr Trump would share exclusive information with him, such as news about the contestants on his reality TV show, The Apprentice. This helped boost viewership for the show and the National Enquirer, Mr Pecker said. Shortly after Mr Trump launched his first presidential bid, Mr Pecker said he met with Cohen and Mr Trump in August 2015. There, Mr Pecker said he agreed to suppress negative articles about the former president and promote positive stories about him, a plan Mr Pecker argued should be kept "as quiet as possible". The tabloid publisher said he also agreed to notify Mr Trump about stories concerning his romantic affairs, as he was "an eligible bachelor" who "dated the most beautiful women", according to Mr Pecker. Mr Pecker detailed two stories that the three men worked to kill. One was from Dino Sajudin, a former Trump Tower doorman, who Mr Pecker said tried to sell an article in 2015 about an unsubstantiated rumour that Mr Trump once fathered a child out of wedlock. After investigating, Mr Pecker said, he found the claim to be "1,000% untrue". But he agreed with Cohen to pay Mr Sajudin $30,000 for perpetual rights to the story, because it would have been "very embarrassing for the campaign" if it got out, Mr Pecker said. Just before the end of the day in court, prosecutors also delved into a hush-money agreement made to Playboy model Karen McDougal. She claims she and Mr Trump had a long-term affair, though Mr Trump denies this. Mr Pecker said he advised the former president to buy Ms McDougal's story, but Mr Trump was unsure. "'Anytime you do anything like this, it always gets out'," Mr Pecker claimed Mr Trump told him. His company eventually purchased the story for $150,000. Though prosecutors did not bring charges over either of these payments, the testimony from Tuesday could help paint a picture of the context leading up to Ms Daniels' payment. Putting the tabloid publisher up on the stand first in the trial was a smart move, according to former Brooklyn prosecutor Julie Rendelman. "He provides the backdrop for how the whole 'catch and kill' scheme came to be, the players involved, and the timing as it related to Trump's campaign," she said. Mr Pecker's testimony came after the second day of the hush-money trial got off to a rocky start for the former president's legal team. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-68880206
  19. Arsenal have asked the question in the most emphatic manner as Chelsea were swept aside with embarrassing ease. It is now up to Liverpool and Manchester City to provide the answer. If the Gunners shared the nagging doubts that resurfaced about their character – “bottle” to use the vernacular – after a short, recent slump, they were banished by a virtuoso performance that left Chelsea humiliated at an exuberant Emirates Stadium. Arsenal’s 5-0 win put them three points ahead of Liverpool and four ahead of Manchester City, not to mention delivering a plus-56 goal difference that pretty much provides the buffer of an extra point. They have played one more game than Liverpool and two more than City but scoreboard pressure counts at this point and Arsenal are ahead on that measure. Mikel Arteta’s side wobbled in the 2-0 loss to Aston Villa in their last home league game, the pressure, tension and anticipation of going into that match having just seen Liverpool lose against Crystal Palace at Anfield earlier seemingly overcoming them. And the subsequent timid Champions League quarter-final exit to Bayern Munich raised the spectre that Arsenal were about to “choke” in the manner that agonisingly consumed them at the final fences of last season’s Premier League race. The response, a battling win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday followed by this champagne show in front of their own celebrating fans, should put to bed any suggestions that it could be a lack of character that will undermine Arsenal in the run-in. And to make the night even better for Arteta, it was one of his summer signings that has been the subject of so much scrutiny who underlined his growing status as something of a talisman – a player bought from this humbled, dysfunctional Chelsea. Even in the first half here, Havertz’s languid style infuriated a small number of Arsenal fans, but not for long as by the end his name was echoing around amid the celebrations, the German even being serenaded loudly after the final whistle. His two goals either side of the hour snuffed out the unlikeliest of prospects, a Chelsea comeback, his second goal a thrilling high finish after one of those glorious passes Martin Odegaard produces with such wonderful regularity. The elegant Havertz is suddenly becoming something of a lucky charm for Arsenal. He has scored in 11 games this season and the Gunners have won them all. Arteta told BBC Sport: “His overall contribution in every phase of play was tremendous. When you add the two goals he scored and some of the link-up play that he had in big moments, it was a great performance.” Arsenal were never in serious danger of spoiling that record against a Chelsea side whose performance gave mediocrity a bad name. One young fan watching Mauricio Pochettino’s team subside brandished a banner reading: “I don’t want your shirt. I want you to fight for ours.” Safe to say he will have returned home sorely disappointed. It is a harsh word but in this case accurate. Chelsea’s second half display was gutless. For the hosts, it was an occasion free of the nerves that riddled them in the loss to Villa, a night when the party pieces could come out and confidence could be even further bolstered before the seismic north London derby at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/cqvn39z4yddo
  20. The Little Mariana fruit bat slipped into oblivion before scientists even had the chance to learn about its biology or behaviour. Even the old people on the island said they hardly ever saw it. The Little Mariana fruit bat, Pteropus tokudae, had long been considered a rarity – the mysterious cousin of a larger bat species also found on the Pacific island of Guam. Like many fruit bats, the Little Mariana species had a small, fox-like face and a brown, furry body, giving rise to its alternative name, the Mariana – or Guam – flying fox. In the 1960s, during a survey that assessed dozens of bats hunted by local people, just one specimen of the Little Mariana fruit bat turned up. It was a female, shot at Tarague Cliff on Guam’s northern coast. She was lactating and so must have been nursing a young pup, which apparently had flown away after the shooting – almost certainly to die. The female was only the third Little Mariana fruit bat specimen to be examined by western scientists in recorded history. Previously, two males had been collected by a naturalist in the 1930s. These sparse records reveal that this bat was medium-sized, about 15cm (5.9 inches) long and with a wingspan of over half a metre. The Little Mariana fruit bat belongs to the "megabat" family – a grouping that contains some of the largest bats in the world. We know hardly anything about this fruit bat's biology – what food it favoured or when it bred, for example. Nor do we know how it interacted with that other, larger bat species on Guam, Pteropus mariannus. The Little Mariana fruit bat is about as obscure a species as you can get and last year the US Fish and Wildlife Service declared it officially extinct, following decades of zero sightings. "I would definitely recognise it," says Tammy Mildenstein, a bat researcher working with the US military, who says there is a tiny possibility that the Little Mariana fruit bat is still out there, hiding somewhere on Guam. She mentions the Philippine bare-backed fruit bat. There were no sightings of that species between the 1960s and 1990s, so it was declared extinct. But it was rediscovered in 2000. Guam is a much smaller place, however, than Negros Island in the Philippines, where most Philippine bare-backed fruit bats live. And Guam has been subject to plenty of bat surveys in recent years – including by Mildenstein. The truth is that, if the Little Mariana fruit bat really were still out there, it probably would have turned up by now, says Tigga Kingston at Texas Tech University. One question that lingers is whether the Little Mariana fruit bat actually originated on another island. Perhaps a group of these bats were blown over to Guam during a great storm, suggests Mildenstein – this would potentially explain their rarity on the island. It’s a "great tragedy" that we have lost this species, says Kingston, for it probably played an important role in plant pollination or seed dispersal, she explains. You might also like: The American swamp bird that disappeared The rewilding project bringing back an ancient breed of cattle to Portugal The rhino that became a conservation icon The one thing we can do is learn from its fragile existence. "It’s like the canary [in the coal mine] bat in terms of what can happen to these species," says Kingston, who co-authored a paper on fruit bats last year. Many other species in the same grouping, the Large Old World Fruit Bats (LOWFBs), as they are known, are also facing extinction. And the threats really stack up for bats in this group that live on small islands exposed to tropical cyclones, as these storms are exacerbated by climate change. Habitat loss, hunting pressures and the effects of extreme weather can all become sharply influential on isolated island bat po[CENSORED]tions. Often, there is nowhere for affected species to escape. "Being on an island can subject you to extreme, rare events," says Kingston Of the 75 large old world fruit bats still around, the majority (71%) are considered threatened, she adds. Unless their fortunes improve, more extinctions within this group could unfold in the coming years. Mildenstein hopes that won't happen. She and colleagues are working to study the larger Guam bat, the Mariana fruit bat, which is endangered and happens to be the only native mammal left on the island. These bats are occasionally hunted but attitudes among the locals have gradually changed, she says: "There's still a bit of poaching here and there but I think the community’s largely on board. People are respecting that bats need their roosting space undisturbed." Sadly, it is too late for the lost Little Mariana fruit bat. A tantalising species that will be forever shrouded in mystery. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20240422-the-megabat-thats-gone-forever
