Pictures of Donald Trump sitting in a New York courtroom have accompanied countless front-page stories about the first-ever criminal trial of a serving or former US president. That coverage has not been limited to the US. The world's media have carried the story - remarking on the man who wants to return to the White House and the case against him. Mr Trump denies 34 counts of falsifying business records in relation to a $130,000 payment made by his lawyer to buy the silence of an adult film star just before the 2016 election. She alleges they had an affair; he denies the story. So how is the historic trial being covered, from Beijing to Rome? We asked our colleagues at BBC Monitoring, which tracks and analyses media around the world. Chinese media have covered Mr Trump's trial but it hasn't featured as prominently on the news agenda as one might expect. Still, it offered the media another opportunity to show what's seen as the chaos and polarisation of US politics. English-language reporting focused on facts of the case. State news agency Xinhua's English-language edition highlighted that Donald Trump was the first former president to stand a criminal trial. It also quoted the accused as describing the trial as "political persecution" and saying the country was "failing". China Daily, the state-run English-language newspaper, focused on jury selection, during which more than 50 of the 96 first potential jurors were excused after saying that they could not be fair. Domestic-facing state-affiliated outlet The Paper provided infographics and timelines of the trial, and cited US surveys as showing polarised views on it among US voters. It also zoomed in on conflicting reports about the possible impact on the general election in November. State-owned China News Service (CNS) talked about "unprecedented problems" facing the US judicial system if Mr Trump were to win in November but also be convicted. Nationalist daily Global Times cited high interest rates, inflation and the crisis in the Middle East as showcasing Mr Trump's notion that the world had spun out of control under the Biden administration. But the state-run tabloid did not spare the Republican either. It provided a colourful report on 16 April focusing on reports that he had fallen asleep in court, posting a meme ridiculing him as "#SleepyDon". 'Mesmerised and alarmed' - Latin America By Pascal Fletcher, BBC Monitoring Latin America specialist, Miami From Mexico and Cuba to Argentina, media coverage reflected the keen interest with which political events in the US are followed south of the border. Multiple stories on the Trump trial emphasised its "historical" nature. Most of the reports made a point of publishing striking photos of a stern-looking Trump seated in what outlets highlighted was the "accused's bench" - this was likely to be viewed as righteous justice by many of his critics in Latin America. The mere possibility of another Trump presidency is both mesmerising and potentially alarming for many Latin American leaders, governments and societies that vividly recall his scathing anti-migrant comments and what they saw as barely-concealed scorn for struggling developing countries during his previous term in the White House. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-68848276

Jude Bellingham scored a late winner as Real Madrid beat Barcelona to move 11 points clear at the top of La Liga after an enthralling El Clasico. Bellingham smashed into the roof of the net as the clock ticked into stoppage time as Real twice came from behind at the Bernabeu. Andres Christensen scored the opener for Barcelona but a Vinicius Jr penalty had the game level at half-time. Fermin Lopez made it 2-1 to Barca before Lucas Vazquez equalised again. The victory puts Real firmly on track to reclaim the title with just six games left to play this season. It looked set to be a positive night for Barcelona when Christensen rose above Toni Kroos to meet Raphinha's corner after just six minutes. But those celebrations were short lived as referee Cesar Soto Grado pointed to the penalty spot when Pau Cubarsi fouled Vazquez in the area, handing Vinicius the opportunity to score his 13th La Liga goal of the campaign. Lamine Yamal thought he had restored Barcelona's lead when he flicked a corner towards goal and goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, who was behind the line, clawed it away. Barcelona were adamant the ball had cross the line but, as La Liga does not have goalline technology, the video assistant referee decided it that was not the case. A tense second half came to life in the 69th minute with Lopez turning in from close range after Lunin parried a cross into his path. However, Carlo Ancelotti's Real drew level for a second time just four minutes later with Vazquez emerging unmarked at the far post to meet Vinicius' cross. The win extends Real's unbeaten record across all competitions to 28 matches - winning 22 and drawing six - with their last loss at home coming against Villarreal on 8 April 2023. Bellingham rises to occasion once again Bellingham is becoming accustomed to delivering on the big stage for Real and few are bigger than a Clasico. The England midfielder got a first taste of the historic fixture in October when he scored twice to lead his side to a 2-1 win at Estadio Olímpico Lluis Companys, and he has continued to step up in the key moments throughout his debut campaign in Spain. His last-gasp winner at the Bernabeu means he is the first Real player to score in their first two La Liga El Clasico's since Ruud van Nistelrooy in 2007. The 103m euros (£88.5m) that Real handed over to Borussia Dortmund to sign Bellingham in the summer is looking like more of a bargain with each week that passes and he certainly does not look out of place with Zinedine Zidane's iconic number five on his back. With 17 goals in La Liga this term, Bellingham is the second highest scorer in the division - just one behind Girona's Artem Dovbyk - and he continues to dazzle as Real look to end the season with a La Liga and Champions League double. 'It's a disgrace' - Xavi Barcelona coach Xavi was furious after VAR officials could not prove that Yamal's effort had crossed the line. "It's a disgrace," said Xavi, complaining that the goalline technology used in other top flights including the Premier League is not available in La Liga. "If we want to be the best league in the world we have to advance in this sense, you have to put in the technology." Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen agreed with his coach. "It's shameful for football, I don't have the words," said the Germany international. "There's so much money in this world and there's no money for what's most important." https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/68869328

From mysterious clicking noises in a fish tank in a lab, to humming haddocks and singing toadfish, scientists are discovering the wonder of underwater communication. When you think about how fish communicate with each other, it might conjure little more than a watery silence, punctuated by the odd bubble. In reality, however, "the oceans are alive with sound", says Aaron Rice, a researcher at Cornell University in Ithaca in New York. Clicks, grunts, plops and screeches are just some of the sounds fish use to signal to those around them underwater. Some, such as toadfish, sing beautiful songs to each other, and others, such as herring, communicate using their digestive tracts – more on this later. They use these signals for a variety of reasons: to warn off competitors, sound the alarm and even to woo potential mates. Clues that fish are chattier than we might have given them credit for have floated around since the 4th Century, from the works of Aristotle to whispers from traditional fishing communities, says Rice. But our ability to eavesdrop on fish has been limited by the devices used to record underwater. (Read more about why scientists are eavesdropping on the ocean in this article by Katherine Latham.) Acoustic monitoring has come a long way since the 1930s, and scientists are now using underwater microphones, called hydrophones, to listen in on the marine world. Technology invented in World War Two to scout for submarines has helped us listen to the ways fish talk to one another in the depths of oceans, rivers and lakes. Out of the estimated 34,000-35,000 ray-finned fish species alone, which include cod, tuna, trout and salmon, only around 4% have been studied for their sound production. But Rice's research suggests we have only scratched the surface of the mysterious world of fish communication. Up to two-thirds of fish could be making noises underwater, he says. In February 2024, researchers in Germany discovered one tiny transparent fish called Danionella cerebrum, which produces a sound so loud it could rival a pneumatic drill. They discovered it after hearing mysterious clicking noises coming from the fish tanks in their laboratory. The 12mm- (0.5in) long fish uses an organ called a swim bladder to produce sounds as loud as 140 decibels in the water around it. The researchers aren't clear what purpose this noise has, but only male fish appear to make the sound and it may be used to establish a sort of hierarchy in the fish tanks. (Read more about Danionella cerebrum and its deafening calls in this story by the BBC's environment correspondent Matt McGrath.) "Sound underwater travels about five times faster than it does in air," says Audrey Looby, an ecologist at the University of Florida who studies fish bioacoustics. "If we stick our head in a pool and try to figure out where a sound is coming from, we really have a hard time doing it. Fish, on the other hand, can gather directional information from underwater sounds." https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20240418-boops-hums-and-farts-the-mysterious-world-of-fish-communication

When Volkswagen took a can opener to the Rabbit, it created an '80s icon. With a 90-hp 1.8-liter engine, like the contemporary GTI, the Rabbit convertible was a quick and nimble runabout. With just 37K miles on the odometer, this example will let you relive those synth-pop dreams. The original Volkswagen Rabbit (first-gen Golf in other markets) wasn't an obvious candidate for a convertible body style, being a hatchback and all. But VW did it, with a basket-handle roll bar and a folded cloth top stacked behind the rear seat. Introduced in 1979, the pint-sized convertible with seating for four was virtually impossible to beat for fun in the sun. It's also a Wolfsburg edition with 13-inch alloy wheels and sports seats, and while there are a couple of cosmetic wear marks on the seat, it presents very well. The options are impressive for the era too, with cruise control, air conditioning, and even an aftermarket Craig graphic equalizer. It's just made to blast that synth pop. Volkswagen doesn't build anything like this kind of car anymore, having killed off the Beetle convertible in 2019. Imagine if Wolfsburg decided to make a little EV droptop on the skateboard chassis of the electric ID.2. It'd inject a dollop of whimsy back into the company's lineup more than even the retro-microbus ID.Buzz can manage. For now, though, here's your own chance to recapture that fizz of 1980s youth. This car previously sold on BaT two years ago for $26,900. Here's another chance to grab it, especially if you missed out on cabriolet ownership back when the only thing bigger than your dreams was your hair. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60535076/1984-volkswagen-rabbit-convertible-bring-a-trailer-auction/

President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his gratitude to the US House of Representatives for approving a new $61bn (£49bn) package of military assistance for Ukraine after months of delays. He said the aid could save thousands of lives. While it's not uncommon for a country's future to be decided by politicians, a nation's very existence hinging on a vote 5,000 miles away is as extraordinary as it sounds. For Ukraine, the six-month wait for this military package has been as costly as it has been frustrating. Dwindling ammunition has cost it lives and territory. In this period of rare boosts for Kyiv, this was a biggie - the arrival of American weaponry will allow its beleaguered troops to do more than hang on. But it's no silver bullet. So, what is the package going to do? It is likely to include air defence systems, mid to long-range missiles and artillery shells. Ukraine's recent lack of them has led to Russian forces capturing hundreds more square kilometres of territory. When the aid arrives, Ukraine can potentially challenge Russia's air superiority, frustrate their supply lines and slow advancing troops. For Vitaliy, a serving soldier who we bump into in central Kyiv, it's important to focus on the positives. "Every cent matters," he says. "It is very much needed. We need everything. Every cartridge, every cent, every positive thought. We need all of it." When I was in the Donetsk region last month, soldiers said most of the artillery rumbles were coming from the Russian side. Cities like Kostyantynivka and Kramatorsk were bracing for what might be coming. This aid might save those cities. It won't give Ukraine the instant means to start liberating territory and force Russia back - but it gives a window for that to happen in the future. The consensus in Kyiv and Washington is that without this American help, Ukraine would lose. On a miserable Sunday morning, the warmth of the Kyiv metro will always beat the wet streets above. It's where we meet Maxym, who's pleased with the US aid finally being approved. "I'm really happy about it," he says. "I'm just a bit disappointed it took so long. Anyways, it's better late than never." Maxym is frustrated by the growing debate over whether Ukraine should negotiate peace with Russia at the expense of territory. 50,000 Russian soldiers confirmed dead by BBC Ukraine warns of WW3 ahead of stalled US aid vote "Russia doesn't want to negotiate," he explains. "They don't want this middle ground that Europe and the US think will end this war. They want it all." We also meet a woman, Vita, holding her son's hand and pulling him off a train. "How else can Ukraine survive without it?" she asks. "It can't. We don't have such an army and weapons." She then becomes emotional. "It's impossible. We really want help, for our children to survive, so we wait." She nods towards her son. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-68868399

After months of delay and increasingly dire warnings, the US House of Representatives approved $61bn in new aid to Ukraine by a comfortable margin. The passage is a big win for Ukraine, which has been desperate for new military supplies to stave off a Russian offensive that is gaining ground. The US Pentagon press secretary told reports on Thursday that US military supplies, including for air defence systems and artillery units, could be moved to Ukraine in a matter of days after final approval. Saturday's rare moment of co-operation in Congress is also a cause for celebration for President Joe Biden, who has been calling the Ukraine war a world-defining conflict that the US cannot afford to shrug off. "Today, members of both parties in the House voted to advance our national security interests and send a clear message about the power of American leadership on the world stage," he said. The president could sign the aid into law later this week, as the US Senate is expected to approve the House foreign aid package - which also includes funding for Israel and Taiwan - as early as Tuesday. US House passes Ukraine aid bill •Nato pledges more advance air defences to Kyiv Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson also has reason to be encouraged by the result. It was his change of heart on Ukraine support, from a reticence to active support, that proved the decisive factor in getting the foreign aid package approved. He received a vote of confidence from Donald Trump just a week ago, and the former president - who has spoken out against more support for Ukraine in the past - could have caused untold headaches for Mr Johnson as aid moved through the House. Instead, he largely stayed silent, focused instead on his ongoing trial in New York City. Mr Johnson may still pay a political price for Saturday's achievement, however. He relied heavily on Democratic support not just on the final votes but to clear procedural hurdles leading up to those votes. His decision to turn to Democrats was necessitated by intense resistance among a handful of Republicans, some in key positions of power in the House, who opposed any new aid to Ukraine. Now those Republicans may force a vote on whether to oust Mr Johnson from the speaker's chair. In remarks to the press after passage of the foreign aid bill, Mr Johnson defended his actions and said he was not walking around the halls of Congress worrying about being removed from power. "I've done here what I believe to be the right thing," he said. While a move to trigger his ouster did not come on Saturday, three Republicans have come forward to call for Mr Johnson's removal - and they say more will join them in the coming days, as the House breaks for a week-long recess. "I'm actually going to let my colleagues go home and hear from their constituents," Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, who drafted a resolution to remove Mr Johnson weeks ago, said after the foreign aid package was approved. Public opinion polls have shown many Republican voters souring on additional aid to Ukraine, even as Democrats and independents support American help in the war effort. If a removal vote does come, some Democrats have expressed a willingness to back the speaker - essentially rewarding him for standing up to members of his own party to ensure Ukraine aid, a high priority for Democrats and the Biden White House, cleared the House. That could give Mr Johnson a short-term lease on political power, but it is difficult to imagine how a Republican speaker can reliably count on ongoing Democratic support. While there was overwhelming bipartisan backing for this foreign aid package, at some point Mr Johnson will push legislation on an issue that angers Democrats. If his Republican critics make another move then, he may find his former allies across the aisle are much less willing to throw him a lifeline. For now, however, Mr Johnson can savour a hard-fought victory. His strategy - to break the aid package into individual components on Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan and to face down his Republican opponents who openly defied him - worked largely as planned. In his remarks after the votes, he said the legislation was not perfect, and that it was not a "blank cheque" - a reflection that recent months have shown there are clear and growing limits to US support. He said new aid must be monitored to ensure that it is being spent wisely and Ukraine must find an "endgame strategy" for the war. But he stood by the path he took to arrive at Saturday's result. "I've said before, you do the right thing and you let the chips fall where they may," Mr Johnson said. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-68866912

Shelby American revealed the 2024 Super Snake based on the new S650 Mustang, with production limited to 250 units The 5.0-liter V-8 powering the Super Snake offers 480 and 830-hp versions, the latter adding a 3.0-liter Whipple supercharger to reach the lofty figure. Other changes include a redesigned suspension, unique wheels, a Borla exhaust, stronger brakes, and better cooling. Shelby American is entering the modern Mustang era with the introduction of the 2024 Super Snake based on the S650 generation. As with most cars to come out of the Shelby garage, the new Super Snake aims to elevate the performance and prestige of the donor car. There are two engine options to choose from. Both are based on the Mustang's Coyote 5.0-liter V-8. The first option comes with the Mustang GT's standard 480 horsepower, while the second option adds a 3.0-liter Whipple supercharger and pushes firepower north of 830 ponies. No matter which output you choose, the Super Snake features a redesigned suspension, unique wheels, a Borla exhaust, stronger brakes, and an upgraded cooling system. Either powertrain can be had with two or three pedals, though opting for the manual means the addition of a short-throw shifter and one-piece driveshaft. "We designed the Shelby Super Snake to be the pinnacle of our performance cars based on Ford's world-class Mustang sports car," said Joe Conway, CEO of Shelby American. "It follows Carroll Shelby's vision that each generation of car improves the breed." Performance upgrades don't stop there, either, with Shelby American shedding excess weight from the Mustang like a snake sheds its skin. The Super Snake gets a new aluminum hood, carbon-fiber front fenders for the widebody kit, a new front fascia, and new rockers. The wheels we mentioned earlier? Those shave roughly nine pounds from each corner. Choosing between the coupe and convertible models also changes the rear spoiler setup. Opt for the fastback and you get a huge rear wing; go for the droptop and you'll receive a duckbill spoiler instead. Interior upgrades are pretty minimal aside from Shelby logos replacing the usual Ford or Mustang-specific logos. As a bonus, Super Snake models equipped with a manual transmission get a unique Shelby gear shifter. Pricing for the new Super Snake has yet to be revealed, but Shelby says production is planned to start this summer. The company is only planning to make 250 examples for the 2024 model year, so act quickly if you're interested. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60549148/2024-shelby-super-snake-details/
