  2. Disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein has been hospitalised just days after his 2020 rape conviction in New York was overturned, his lawyer has said. Arthur Aidala said he was moved to a Manhattan hospital on Friday. He remains in jail after being separately convicted of rape in Los Angeles. Mr Aidala said his client was "somewhat of a train wreck health wise". "It seems like he needs a lot of help, physically. He's got a lot of problems," he told AP. Later, in a statement to CBS, the BBC's US partner, Mr Aidala said Mr Weinstein had been taken to hospital after the New York City Department of Correction determined that he needed "immediate medical attention". "A myriad of tests are being performed on Harvey and he is being kept for observation," he said. A spokesperson with the corrections department said that Weinstein remained in custody at Bellevue Hospital. He was moved on Friday to the Rikers Island jail complex from the Mohawk Correctional Facility where he had been since 2023. Weinstein's lawyers have previously said the one-time movie producer has had a series of health problems, including diabetes, sleep apnea and issues affecting his heart and eyes. In 2020, he spent five days in hospital for ongoing heart problems and chest pains. Mr Aidala said he is scheduled to meet Weinstein on Monday before his court appearance on Wednesday, the Associated Press reports. Earlier in the week, the New York Court of Appeals overturned Weinstein's conviction on the basis that he did not receive a fair trial, saying that prosecutors in the pivotal #MeToo case called witnesses whose accusations were not part of the charges against him. The court said that meant he was unfairly tried for past behaviour, and ordered a new trial. At his trial in 2020, Weinstein was convicted of sexually assaulting former production assistant Mimi Haleyi in 2006 and raping Jessica Mann, a former aspiring actress, in 2013. He was jailed for 23 years. Weinstein's defence team said sex between the movie executive and the accusers had been consensual. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-68913116
  3. Chelsea manager Emma Hayes said Kadeisha Buchanan's red card in the semi-final defeat by Barcelona was the "worst decision in Women's Champions League history". Buchanan was ordered off for a second yellow card offence as Chelsea were knocked out, losing 2-0 at Stamford Bridge for a 2-1 exit on aggregate. Hayes said she thought her side - who also conceded a penalty - were "robbed" by referee Iuliana Demetrescu's decisions. Buchanan's second booking came for a challenge on Patri Guijarro just before the hour mark. "I didn't think it was a foul, let alone a yellow card," said Hayes. Chelsea were 1-0 down to Aitana Bonmati's first-half goal but level on aggregate when the red card came out, with the tie in the balance. Fridolina Rolfo's spot-kick in the 75th minute carried Barcelona through to the 25 May final. Hayes said that going down to 10 players swung the tie's momentum in Barcelona's favour. "I genuinely believe we were on top of the game," she said. "We just hit the post, I could feel the momentum going in that direction, but we didn’t have the chance to experience that. "You need everything to go your way. They get two yellow cards, a deflection and a penalty. Everything went their way and everything didn’t go our way tonight." The video assistant referee (VAR) system was in operation but can only be used to check possible red card decisions, not yellows. The Chelsea boss called the decision to send off Buchanan "horrific". Hayes added: "I'm stood there and I've looked at the fourth official and said, 'Surely that will be checked?', and she said it can’t on a yellow. "The toughest thing to take is that we didn't lose it. There's nothing you can do when there's such a terrible decision and it's already hard enough. They are a top team. When that's taken out of your hands, that is a tough one on the players for sure." Missing out on the final means Hayes, who departs to become United States manager at the end of the season, will leave Chelsea having won every available trophy apart from the Champions League. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/cv2x02nwkzgo
  4. For Antarctic wildlife, exposure to the Sun's damaging rays has increased in recent years, scientists say. A hole in the ozone layer - the protective barrier of gas in the upper atmosphere - now lingers over the frozen continent for more of the year. A major cause of ozone loss is believed to be the amount of smoke from unprecedented Australian wildfires, which were fuelled by climate change. The study is published in the journal Global Change Biology. Climate change biologist Prof Sharon Robinson told BBC News: "When I tell people I work on the ozone hole, they go: 'oh, isn't that better now?'" Scientists working in Antarctica discovered the hole in the ozone layer in 1985 - by measuring the amount of solar radiation reaching Earth. A large group of ozone depleting chemicals were responsible - primarily CFCs or chlorofluorocarbons - that were used as refrigerants. Every country agreed, in 1987, to phase out a group of ozone-depleting chemicals. It was an agreement known as the Montreal Protocol and is considered to be the most successful environmental treaty in history. The ozone layer is now healing. "But there's a hole - an area where the ozone layer is very depleted - that appears every spring over Antarctica," Prof Robinson explained. That ozone loss is particular to the polar continent, because of chemical reactions that occur in very low temperature, high atmospheric clouds. Those reactions break down ozone - eating a hole in the layer. The annual appearance of this hole usually peaks in September and October, when most land-based plants and animals are safely tucked away under snow cover and marine animals are protected by extensive sea ice. It is now lasting through to December - well in to the Antarctic summer. "That's when things will be exposed and most vulnerable," said Prof Robinson. Certain types of ultraviolet radiation from the Sun, called UV-B rays, increase the risk of skin cancer and cataracts in humans, but researchers do not yet know if the same is true for Antarctic mammals and birds. https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-68906013
  5. International Dance Day stands as a global tribute to the art of dance, conceived by the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute (ITI), an essential partner of UNESCO in the realm of performing arts. This annual celebration commemorates the birth of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727–1810), revered as the progenitor of modern ballet. It distinguishes classical or romantic ballet, shaping its contemporary form. The essence of the day lies in fostering participation and enlightenment in dance through a myriad of events and festivals held worldwide on this significant date. UNESCO officially recognizes ITI as the architects and coordinators of this culturally enriching celebration. (Also read: International Dance Day 2024: Weight loss to heart health; incredible benefits of dancing explained )International Dance Day is celebrated every year on April 29. This year it will be celebrated on Monday. International Dance Day is celebrated every year on 29 April. It was established by the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute (ITI), UNESCO's main partner for the performing arts. International Dance Day was created to celebrate dance as an art form and to promote its importance worldwide. The date was chosen to commemorate the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, a French dancer and ballet master often credited as the creator of modern ballet. The first International Day of Dance was celebrated in 1982. Since then, it has grown into a global celebration with events organised by dance communities, schools, companies and organisations around the world. These events often include performances, workshops, dance festivals, lectures and other activities aimed at raising awareness of the art of dance and its cultural significance. Each year, the ITI selects a prominent dance figure from the international community to write a message for International Dance Day, which is distributed worldwide. This message usually reflects on the importance of dance in society, its role in cultural exchange and the value of artistic expression through movement. https://www.hindustantimes.com/lifestyle/festivals/international-dance-day-2024-date-history-significance-and-all-you-need-to-know-101714288349402.html
  6. Donald Petersen, Ford chairman and CEO from 1985 to 1990, worked at Ford for over four decades and is rightly seen as a bright spot during a difficult time. The mass market audience knows his work best through the Taurus, which was introduced on his watch. But it's the way he saved the Mustang that earned him praise in our pages in the mid-'80s. Former Ford chairman and CEO Donald E. Petersen dedicated more than 40 years to the automaker, and his career is being remembered with high praise as the industry hears the news that he has died this week at his home in Bloomfield Hills, near Detroit. He was 97. Petersen was also warmly regarded during much of his time at Ford. He was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1992. This followed a double honor from the organization in 1987 when he won the Industry Leader of the Year Award and a Distinguished Service Citation Award. According to the AHoF, Peterson was also named a "Most Valuable Person of 1988" by USA Today and"CEO of the Year" by Chief Executive magazine the following year. When Petersen, a mechanical engineer, was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1988, the voters cited his "outstanding leadership in the development of high-quality, smaller, lighter, more fuel-efficient, and more socially acceptable automobiles." Some of that success came from the 1985 introduction of the Taurus, which was partly a response to higher-quality vehicles from Japanese competitors Toyota and Honda. The AHoF said Petersen's leadership got Ford designers to "create vehicles they would be proud to park in their own driveways” to challenge the growth of Japanese vehicle sales in the U.S. The resulting Taurus (and Mercury Sable) became bestsellers in the 1980s. The official accolades are likely less important to muscle-car history buffs than Petersen's role in killing off the mid-1980s plan for a reborn Mustang without a V-8, which Ford had intended to put on a front-wheel-drive platform. Petersen, Ford's president during that time, responded to a deluge of hate mail criticizing the idea—much of it rumored to be addressed to him as "Dear Asshole"—by smartly canceling that plan. The engineering work would become the Ford Probe, in collaboration with Mazda. When we reviewed the 1985 Mustang, we credited Peterson with being "eager to make year-by-year installments toward the mechanical perfection of the Mustang" and commented: "Perseverance pays off. In this case, perseverance is spelled Donald Petersen." No, the 1985 Mustang didn't achieve that ideal state, but Peterson was responsible for getting it closer than it would have been otherwise. Ford also introduced its well-known “Quality is Job One” slogan during Petersen’s tenure as CEO. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60626538/don-petersen-former-ford-ceo-obituary/
  7. Six suspected spies have been arrested in Germany this month alone, in what has become a torrent of allegations of Russian and Chinese espionage. For the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party it has proved especially embarrassing, because their top two candidates for the European elections in June have been caught in the crosshairs. An aide to MEP Maximilian Krah, who heads the party's list, has been arrested on suspicion of spying for China. Jian G is accused of being an "employee of a Chinese secret service". Prosecutors have also begun preliminary investigations into the politician himself over alleged payments from pro-Russian and Chinese sources. Mr Krah denies any wrongdoing. Days earlier, Petr Bystron, the second name on the AfD list, denied allegations that he received cash from the Voice of Europe website, alleged by European intelligence to have been a front for Russian intelligence. But the allegations go well beyond the AfD. Two German nationals of Russian origin have been arrested on suspicion of plotting to sabotage Germany's military aid to Ukraine while three Germans have been detained for allegedly planning to pass on advanced engine designs to Chinese intelligence. "It is really unusual to have detentions of three networks [allegedly] engaged in some sort of espionage for Russia and China coming almost at the same time," said Noura Chalati, a research fellow at the Leibniz Centre for the Modern Orient. In all three espionage cases, the efforts of Germany's BfV domestic intelligence agency are believed to have been crucial. "Our security authorities… have massively strengthened their counter-espionage efforts," Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said. The arrests came hard on the heels of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's return from wide-ranging talks with China's President Xi Jinping in Beijing. 'Arrest always a political decision' Andrei Soldatov, an expert on the Russian security services, believes the case of the Russian-German pair could reflect a desire by the Kremlin escalate attacks on aid to Ukraine. "It is just a completely new level of escalation," Mr Soldatov told the BBC. "These people [allegedly] collected information to help organise sabotage operations against military facilities on German soil." Meanwhile, Roderich Kiesewetter, a former German Army officer who is now an opposition MP, alleged China was seeking to gain access to advanced research that could be useful for military or other purposes. "China sees opportunities to exploit Germany's openness to access our knowledge and technology," he told the BBC. Even so, Andrei Soldatov believes Berlin is putting down a marker. "An arrest is always a political decision," he says. "Counter-intelligence agencies in all countries prefer not to arrest people because it's better to follow them and monitor their activities in order to learn more about their networks and their activities. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-68903479
  8. Like many at PC Gamer, I've been enjoying a healthy amount of Helldiving the last two months. Whether I'm shoulders-deep in pulped bug biomass or cowering beneath a storm of automaton energy bolts, Helldivers 2 has been a refreshing surprise. I expected Helldivers 2 to be good, but not "unforeseeable appeal that knocks out back-end servers and leaves players in a weeks-long login purgatory" good—similar to how I couldn't imagine Baldur's Gate 3 consuming the entire gaming consciousness for the tail end of last year. While Helldivers 2 and Baldur's Gate 3 might look like sudden jackpot successes, they're testaments to what can be achieved through continued, devoted iteration. They're the products of development teams honing their collective craft across a decade or more. Arrowhead and Larian are studios who had the willingness—and all-too-rare freedom—to gamble on chasing a singular creative vision until the bet finally paid off, even if that sometimes meant risking bankruptcy. Developing the next surprise blockbuster is an easier problem to tackle if, like Arrowhead, you've basically been refining the same game since Obama was president. Helldivers 2 was a surprise to me, but it wouldn't have been if I'd remembered that my history with Arrowhead games goes back more than a decade. Even though I'd played and loved it back in 2011, it took a casual mention from my editor to realize that, oh shit, these are the Magicka folks! As I rotated the two very different-looking games in my mind, cubelike, their similarities crystallized. In hindsight, Magicka's DNA is visibly threaded across everything Arrowhead's made. Mid-combat key combos to combine elemental magic would evolve into the ordinance input sequences in Helldivers, producing the same slapstick carnage. Magicka's farcical fantasy was a premonition of the Helldivers sci-fi satire. And when Arrowhead drifted from the Magicka model, it was still improving its art of gratuitous multiplayer action in the firefights of Showdown Effect and co-op dungeon crawling in Gauntlet. Helldivers 2 isn't an anomaly. It's the product of 13 years spent honing the craft of creating jolly, gratuitous meat grinders where you punch in frantic button combinations to turn your foes and friends gleefully into mulch. The camera angle changed and now it's orbital strikes instead of elemental spells, but Arrowhead's been chipping away at the same block. https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/the-wild-successes-of-helldivers-2-and-baldurs-gate-3-send-a-clear-message-let-devs-cook/

  17. Dejected. That's how Jey Sushil, a student at Washington University in St Louis, Missouri, says he feels. Mr Sushil is still shaken by the death in February of fellow student Amarnath Ghosh, a 34-year-old classical dancer from India. Local police are investigating it as a homicide case. Mr Sushil says he found out about Ghosh's death through a friend in India before receiving any information from his university. "They told us after two days. Students are not very happy with the overall response. It's like, who cares about how Indians feel?" Ghosh was fatally shot off campus in a city street. The university clarified that it communicates a student's death only after law enforcement confirms the identity, a process that takes time, and with consent from the student's next of kin. Calling it a "horrible tragedy", the VC of Marketing and Communications at Washington University in St. Louis, Julie Flory said, "We shared this sad news with members of our community as soon as we could and according to the wishes of Amarnath's closest contacts." The St. Louis Police Department said it "takes 48 hours to establish identity" of the deceased and "in many cases, much longer". Ghosh is among the 11 Indian or Indian-origin students who have died in the US so far this year, sparking fears about personal safety within the community. The causes of death have varied, from hypothermia to suicide to shooting. Experts say there is no discernible link between these unrelated incidents. As each tragedy echoes through campuses, students carry on with their daily routines, balancing fears amid academic demands. "We avoid going out after dark. We have identified places in the city that are unsafe in the evenings. What else can we do?" Mr Sushil asks. Like him, others also complain that their universities do not report the deaths on time, and they find out about them through Indian media or from relatives back home. Mohammad Abdul Arfath, 25-year-old student of Cleveland State University (CSE), was found dead earlier this month after he went missing in March. A student, who wanted to stay anonymous and joined the college at the same time as Arfath, said he found out about his death through a WhatsApp message from his parents. "My parents reminded me that I have to stay on guard," he said. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-68832876
  18. Arda Guler scored on his first La Liga start as Real Madrid closed in on the title with victory at Real Sociedad. The highly-rated 19-year-old Turkey midfielder struck with Madrid's first attempt on goal midway through the first half, turning in a cross. Carlo Ancelotti had made a raft of changes after last weekend's win in El Clasico, and it was Real Sociedad who started strongly. But they couldn't turn dominance into goals as the hosts were frustrated. Takefusa Kubo thought he had immediately cancelled out Guler's opener but his strike was ruled out for offside. The second half was more scrappy but Real Madrid did what they needed to do to move 14 points clear at the top, before second-placed Barcelona host Valencia on Monday. With five games remaining, Real Madrid need four more points to cement the title. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/68909689
  19. Millions of small fish fling themselves on Californian beaches to have sex – strictly under the full or new Moon. This incredible mating ritual is threatened, but citizen scientists are diligently working to save it. On a Southern Californian beach in the middle of the night, a citizen scientist stood observing thousands of fish having sex. "Unruly thousands, all making noise," they duly jotted down. "Looked like some post-apocalyptic marine Mad Max." This unique mating ritual is known as the grunion run. Unlike most other fish, the small silvery grunions actually spawn onshore, flinging themselves from the ocean onto the sand. In addition, they only spawn during full or new moons – because they need a high tide. Since 2002, the rituals have been observed by "grunion greeters" – citizen scientists who volunteer to observe the fish at 50 California beaches. They report their observations back to Karen Martin, a scientist at Malibu's Pepperdine University, who has been studying grunion for decades. To date, more than 5,000 people have contributed to Martin's project. "We couldn't do it without them," says Martin. "There is no other way for us to get this kind of data. It's pretty remarkable, actually." The fish are near-impossible to count. They are smart enough to avoid nets, and they don't take bait on a hook. "The 'normal' methods for stock assessment do not work for these species," Martin explains. As a result, there's no formal statistic for how many there are – and so they don't have a conservation status either, although Martin says they are certainly under threat and numbers have declined significantly in the past decade according to her research. The fish are only found along the Pacific Coast, primarily between Punta Abreojos in Mexico's Baja California, up to Point Conception, in central California. Scientists believe the fish, which grow to around five inches (13cm) long, have declined in numbers over the past century. Beach erosion, light pollution and development along coastlines are the main threats to the fish, as well as overfishing and habitat destruction. The grunion's mating behaviour is unique, to say the least. Females swim as far up as they can and then fling themselves out of the water onto the sand, wiggling their tails to dig a hole, into which they release their eggs. Males follow behind and fertilise the eggs. The eggs remain buried in the sand until the next tide that is high enough to reach the them, usually around 10 days. Then they hatch. This behaviour puts the grunion at risk, though – and not only because they are easy prey when they're spawning on the sand. The beaches the fish use happen to be some of the most po[CENSORED]r tourist destinations in California, which are groomed almost daily with heavy machinery, meaning the eggs are often destroyed. "Everything that people do on those beaches is going to impact the environment," Martin says. Although gathering data on the fish has been challenging, there have been some successes with implementing regulations to protect grunion. In 1927, the first regulations to protect grunion were put in place by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife after scientists observed the fish being caught in enormous amounts when they came ashore – people would use nets made from bedsheets to catch grunion en masse. Gear restrictions were introduced during closed season – April until June – meaning locals could only use their bare hands. In the 1940s, marine biologist Boyd Walker observed every grunion run in La Jolla, California, for three years. His dissertation mapped the grunion's range, mating habits, and developed a method to count grunion, now known as the Walker Scale. This is what Martin's grunion greeters use to compile their reports. The scale ranges from W0 meaning "no fish or only a few individuals", to W5 meaning "fish covering the length of the beach, several individuals deep, impossible to see sand between fish". The latter is a rare event, making up only around 1-3% of observations in a year. The citizen scientists assess the number of fish on shore, the duration of the spawning event, and the extent of the shoreline the fish cover. Data gathered from the most po[CENSORED]r grunion beaches gathered shows an overall decline in the fish. Martin's study, which she published in 2019 using citizen science data, found from 2002 to 2010 the median average ranking on the Walker scale was W2, indicating 100-500 fish at the peak of a run. From 2010 to 2018 this ranking dropped to a median of W1 – fewer than 100 fish at the peak. Furthermore, a median of W0 – "no run" with little or no spawning – was recorded in both 2014 and 2016. "Despite local concentrations, California grunion are not abundant," says Dianna Porzio, senior environmental scientist at the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. "Although [the grunion greeters] data has limitations, the findings show a decrease in the number of spawning California grunion across much of their southern California range over the past decade. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20240419-californias-beaches-are-home-to-wild-fish-orgies-during-the-grunion-run A
