  1. When Donald Trump sits at the defence table in the wood-panelled Manhattan courtroom over the next several weeks, he will be joined by a cast of characters who could feature in a Hollywood blockbuster. Opening statements in the first criminal trial of a former US president were heard on Monday. There are a slate of intriguing potential witnesses, including an adult film actress, a fixer-turned-star-witness, a loyal money-man convicted of tax fraud and others. A white-collar defence lawyer who has bet his career on defending Mr Trump is leading the former president's defence team. Meanwhile, Manhattan's first black district attorney has assembled a crack team of Manhattan prosecutors who are very familiar with Mr Trump and his organisation. And the entire case is overseen by a seasoned New York Supreme Court judge who is well aware of Mr Trump's courtroom troubles and behaviour. Mr Trump faces 34 charges of falsifying business records to disguise a hush-money payment to a woman with whom he allegedly had an affair. He has pleaded not guilty and denies having the affair. Below are the central players to know in the historic case. Justice Juan Merchan - the seasoned New York jurist - has previously spent time with Mr Trump in a Manhattan courtroom. He presided over the Trump Organization's tax fraud case that resulted in a hefty fine and jail time for the company's chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg. That means the judge is well acquainted with Mr Trump's orbit and his courtroom tactics to delay, deny and deflect. That behaviour will likely draw Justice Merchan's ire. While he may be soft-spoken, he has earned the reputation of being a no-nonsense jurist. He has already shut down Mr Trump once during jury selection. Meanwhile, Mr Trump has claimed on social media that "there has virtually never been a more conflicted judge than this one", and he has attacked Justice Merchan's daughter - who is employed by a firm that works with Democrats. Mr Trump has since been barred from speaking about the judge's family. The Manhattan prosecutors Alvin Bragg - the Manhattan district attorney - became the first black man to lead the Manhattan District Attorney's office when he was elected in November 2021. He took over the investigation into Mr Trump and announced that his office would bring felony charges against the former president last April. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-68861539
  2. Bentley revealed the Bentayga Apex Edition, which, as the name suggests, is a new special edition of its luxury SUV. The Apex Edition gets a special look, carbon-fiber wheels, and carbon-ceramic brakes to save weight. Production of the new special edition Bentayga is being limited to just 20 units worldwide with a subset being offered to owners of the Continental GT Le Mans Edition in matching trim and livery. Special-edition luxury models are a dime a dozen these days, and two weeks after revealing the Bentayga Black Edition, Bentley's got another one with the new Bentayga Apex Edition. Bentley took the nearly 5500-pound luxobarge and removed weight where it could. So it's basically a Miata, right? Not quite. The Apex Edition sheds roughly 97 pounds compared with the standard Bentayga S. Half of that saved weight comes thanks to the 10-spoke 22-inch carbon-fiber wheels. The other half comes from a new set of performance-oriented carbon-ceramic brake rotors. Looks-wise, Bentley's in-house Mulliner team came up with six curated liveries—though the automaker will also welcome the creation of a bespoke model, assuming your wallet can handle it. All six Mulliner-designed models come with a racing stripe extending from nose to tail over the hood and roof of the car. Buyers of last year's Bentley Continental GT Le Mans edition cars will be given the opportunity to order a Bentayga Apex Edition in matching trim and livery. As for specifics, there are new spoilers on the front and rear, while the sills and mirror caps are finished in carbon fiber. There's an abundance of carbon fiber inside the Apex Edition, with the material spanning the dash and covering the center console. Lest you forget which special edition you're in, Bentley kindly labeled the Apex Edition with special badging inside and out. Power is sourced from Bentley's 542-hp twin-turbocharged V-8. The slightly heavier standard Bentayga S can sprint to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. Considering the Apex Edition only shaves 1.8 percent off the Bentayga S's curb weight, we don't really expect the limited-edition version will be quicker in any meaningful way. Production will be limited to a mere 20 units globally. Bentley was mum on pricing, but we're sure the special edition will fetch quite a bit more than the V-8 Bentayga S's $243,025 starting price. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60638810/2024-bentley-bentayga-apex-edition/
  3. China lifts ban on Fujian tourists to Taiwan, signals easing cross-strait relations amid political shiftChina has lifted the ban on tourists from Fujian province visiting Taiwan, Nikkei Asia reported citing China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism on Sunday.According to the report, China's Vice Minister Rao Quan announced the eased restrictions to a visiting delegation from Taiwan's main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), which seeks closer ties with China. The move comes ahead of the ceremonial induction of Taiwanese President-elect William Lai to office, whom China calls a separatist. Nikkei Asia reported that travel would first be permitted to Taiwan's Matsu islands, close to the Fujian coast, with group tours to restart once ferry service resumes between Fujian's Pingtan and Taiwan's main island. China imposed tourism restrictions on individual travel by residents from the mainland, including Fujian, in 2019. Cross-strait relations deteriorated after the 2016 election of Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, whose Democratic Progressive Party opposes unification with China in favour of the status quo. Lai is now vice president under the term-limited Tsai and ran as the DPP's presidential candidate in 2024. https://www.hindustantimes.com/lifestyle/travel/china-lifts-ban-allows-tourists-from-fujian-province-to-visit-taiwan-101714481390628.html
  4. Winchester Cathedral has apparently scattered her eggs overnight. Mel, who took over as the cathedral's resident female falcon in March, after the previous bird Winnie was found dead, was incubating two eggs. The eggs were seen pushed out of the nesting tray early on Monday. Keith Betton of the Hampshire Ornithological Society said they were put back in place but there was only a "small chance" of them hatching. Mr Betton, who manages the nesting site, said it was not clear how the eggs had ended up out of the nest, but the bird was "clearly stressed". It meant they were away from the warmth of the mother for four to five hours. He said he made the "emotional call" to put them back in place after consulting a number of peregrine experts. "They've got a small chance - rather than just leave them, we took the decision to put them back on the nest. "She had been trying to incubate them when they were out of the nest, so she clearly wanted to carry on." Mel was seen sitting back on the eggs again shortly after 12:00 BST. It is estimated that if the eggs did hatch, it would happen around 18 May. The eggs will be removed if they do not hatch, Mr Betton said. Mel, named after 19th Century writer Melesina Trench, who is buried in the cathedral, mated with Winnie's former partner William. Nothing is known about Mel's age or background as she is not ringed. Winnie was a familiar sight over Winchester having first nested on the old police headquarters building in 2011 before moving to the cathedral nesting site in 2017. The peregrine falcon is the fastest flying bird and can regularly reach speeds of more than 100mph. Numbers have recovered in recent decades, with 1,750 breeding pairs recorded in 2014. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-hampshire-68921760
  5. Fulham have been fined £75,000 by the Premier League and given a suspended six-month ban "from registering any academy players currently or previously registered with another club". The punishment, external relates to a payment made by the Cottagers to Balham Blazers FC following Fabio Carvalho's move to Liverpool. Attacking midfielder Carvalho joined Fulham's academy from Balham Blazers in December 2014. The Premier League said, external Fulham "accepted breaches of the Premier League rules in relation to player registrations". The judgement about the issue added the London club "has accepted that the payment of the settlement sum pursuant to the Carvalho agreement and/or settlement agreement are breaches of rule U.38". The club's ban is suspended for one year and started on 15 April, 2024. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/cxe8d71dx0do
  6. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says the US is the only country that can stop Israel from attacking Rafah, the southern Gaza city where more than a million people are taking refuge. Mr Abbas, who runs parts of the occupied West Bank, said any attack could see Palestinians flee Gaza. Israel has consistently vowed to carry out an offensive in Rafah. US President Joe Biden "reiterated his clear position" on Rafah to Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu in a call on Sunday. The US has repeatedly said it cannot support a large-scale Israeli military operation in Rafah without seeing a credible plan to keep civilians out of harm's way. Speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in the Saudi capital Riyadh earlier, Mr Abbas - whose Palestinian Authority is not present in Gaza, which has been under Hamas rule since 2007 - urged the US to intervene. "We appeal to the United States of America to ask Israel to stop the Rafah operation because America is the only country capable of preventing Israel from committing this crime," he said, adding that only a "small strike" on Rafah would force the Palestinian po[CENSORED]tion to flee the Gaza strip. "The biggest catastrophe in the Palestinian people's history would then happen." More than half of Gaza's po[CENSORED]tion is in Rafah and conditions in the overcrowded southern city are already dire, with displaced people there telling the BBC there was a lack of food, water and medication. While the White House did not elaborate on what specifically Mr Biden's latest comments to Mr Netanyahu were regarding the planning offensive in Rafah, national security spokesman John Kirby told the ABC network that Israel had agreed to listen to US concerns and thoughts before going in. Meanwhile, the indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas over a potential ceasefire and the release of remaining hostages in Gaza, which have gained new momentum recently, have been further exposing divisions in Israel's governing coalition. War cabinet member and opposition figure Benny Gantz on Sunday said that the current government "would not have the right to continue to exist" if a reasonable deal to return the hostages was not accepted. "Entering Rafah is important in the long struggle against Hamas. The return of our abductees, is urgent and of far greater importance," Mr Gantz wrote on X, formerly Twitter. The far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, however, said the government should resign if it accepted a deal in which the planned offensive in Rafah was cancelled. Their comments come after Israel's foreign minister said that the country could suspend the incursion, which Mr Netanyahu has said is the next step in its battle against Hamas, if there was a hostage deal. The Israeli military said its chief Herzi Halevi had approved plans to continue the war, with Israeli media saying this referred to the Rafah operation. Long-running talks mediated by Egypt and Qatar have largely stalled because of the gaps between the Israeli and Hamas positions, but on Sunday Hamas said it would send representatives to Cairo to give a response to the latest proposal. US media have quoted unnamed Egyptian officials as saying the latest ceasefire proposal given to Hamas involved a several-week period of calm intended to lead to the end of the war, in return for the release of 20 hostages. Hamas wants a permanent end to the war and withdrawal of all Israeli troops from Gaza, while Israel insists Hamas must be destroyed in Gaza and all hostages freed. Egypt and other Arab states have previously said an influx of Palestinian refugees fleeing the war would be unacceptable because it would amount to the expulsion of Palestinians from their land. Satellite pictures have shown new tent encampments being built near the Gaza coast, to the west of Rafah and the city of Khan Younis slightly further north, which has been left largely in ruins. Media reports say the tents are to accommodate people displaced from Rafah. The current war began when Hamas attacked Israeli communities near Gaza, killing about 1,200 people, mainly civilians, and taking about 250 hostages. Some 133 hostages are believed still to be in Gaza, of whom about 30 are thought to be dead, after a brief truce in November saw some hostages released. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-68916315

  8. It's not everyday that I'm excited about a new piece of tech. Phones and laptops have been using the same form factor for so many decades now that there's nothing really exciting when it comes to design. However, when I first laid my hands on the new Asus Zenbook Duo 2024, I was immediately super excited for the future of laptop design. ‘In Search of Incredible' has been Asus' tagline since 2013, and I think they've truly achieved something incredible with the Zenbook Duo 2024. This laptop is going to change the portability game. I've been using the new Asus Zenbook Duo 2024 for the last two weeks and here's how it's probably the best product of 2024 for me. Asus Zenbook Duo 2024 price in India Before I start telling you how amazing the new Asus Zenbook Duo is, I'll talk about the pricing. In India, the dual screen laptop starts at Rs. 1,59,990 for the variant with an Intel Core Ultra 5 125H CPU, 16GB RAM, and 1TB storage. That's not bad at all. For comparison, the new Apple MacBook Air 13 M3 with 16GB RAM and 512GB of storage is priced at Rs. 1,54,900 and that only has one There's also an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H variant of the Zenbook Duo 2024, which is priced at Rs. 1,99,990 and comes with 32GB RAM and 1TB storage. The Intel Core Ultra 9 185H variants start at Rs. 2,19,990 for the 32GB RAM and 1TB option, and Rs. 2,39,990 for the 2TB option. X-Plus VickyBoard Ergo Split-V Keyboard Review I've been reviewing the Intel Core Ultra 9 185H variant with 32GB RAM and 2TB storage. In the box, you'll get a laptop sleeve, Asus Pen 2.0 stylus with extra tips, a 65W fast charger that's smaller than most mobile chargers, a USB Type-C to Type-C cable, manuals and warranty papers, and the laptop. Asus Zenbook Duo 2024 Review: Design When you first lay your eyes on the Zenbook Duo 2024, it's very easy to mistaken it for a regular laptop, a rather thick one. It's about the same size as an M1 Macbook Air in terms of length and width. The laptop has an aluminium-magnesium alloy lid and base that feature a matte finish. You can only buy the laptop in an Inkwell Grey colour option. The lid has subtle glossy lines running across that's been found on most of the new Asus Zenbook series laptops. There's some flex on the lid, but it's solid everywhere else. The laptop also comes with a MIL-STD 810H military standard rating. https://www.gadgets360.com/laptops/reviews/asus-zenbook-duo-2024-review-5448102#pfrom=indepth

  13. Pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel protesters have clashed at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) as demonstrations over the war in Gaza continue across US campuses. Nationwide rallies - during which there have been hundreds of arrests - showed no sign of stopping over the weekend. At UCLA "physical altercations broke out" after a barrier separating the two sides was breached, an official said. The White House has insisted that demonstrations must remain peaceful. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told ABC that the US government respects the right of protesters demonstrating over the Israel-Gaza war. But he condemned antisemitic incidents that have been reported, as well as "all the hate speech and the threats of violence out there". At UCLA, a pro-Palestinian encampment has grown in size in recent days, as has a group of pro-Israeli counter-protesters. The Israeli American Council (IAC) organised the counter-protest. It recently said it had "profound concern" over the antisemitism reported elsewhere, including at Columbia University in New York City. Many pro-Palestinian protesters have sought to distance themselves from antisemitic incidents and in some cases they have blamed outside agitators. The two groups at UCLA remained peaceful until Sunday, Reuters news agency reported, when campus police with batons separated them as they pushed and shoved each other, and traded punches. It was not immediately clear which group broke through the barrier between them. "We are heartbroken about the violence that broke out," the university said, adding that additional security measures had been introduced. What do US student protesters want? How a police raid at Columbia University ignited campus movement Tensions flared at US universities after the 7 October Hamas attack, in which about 1,200 people were killed in Israel, and the retaliatory Israeli military assault that has killed more than 34,000 people in Gaza. In the last fortnight, a nationwide uprising has emerged which university officials and law enforcement have struggled to contain. They have blamed outside groups for infiltrating the demos. The movement seems to have been emboldened by the arrest of more than 100 protesters at Columbia University after police were called to clear an encampment. Hundreds of people have since been arrested in locations across the US - many of whom had pitched their own tents on university grounds. The protests have also spread to Canada, with a pro-Palestinian camp of about 20 tents now installed in the grounds of Montreal's McGill University. Activists in both countries are demanding a ceasefire in the conflict, and that their universities - many with massive endowments - cut their financial ties, or divest, from Israel. They say that companies doing business in or with the nation of Israel are complicit in its ongoing war on Gaza - and so are institutions that invest in those companies https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-68919182
  14. Ford's Model e EV division reported a net revenue of around $100,000,000 in the first quarter. Adding in expenses, though, the Blue Oval's EV arm lost $1.3 billion for the quarter. Ford largely blames margin-cutting price cuts for the massive drop in revenue compared to Q1 2023. Ford reported a net income of $1.3 billion for the first quarter of 2024, a figure largely bolstered by the success of the company's Ford Pro fleet division and the $3 billion it brought in—more than three times that of the internal-combustion-engine-focused Ford Blue arm. The Blue Oval's battery-electric–oriented Model e division, however, remained a drain on company funds, losing $1.3 billion for the quarter—around twice what it lost during the same period in 2023. The company blamed "industry-wide pricing pressure" in its first-quarter earnings presentation. To put these numbers in perspective, Ford Pro made approximately $7300 for each of the more than 400,000 vehicles it sold after accounting for expenditures but not interest or taxes (EBIT). Ford Blue pocketed close to $1400 for each of the more than 600,000 vehicles it sold under the same conditions. Model e, on the other hand, lost close to $130,000 per vehicle on the approximately 10,000 EVs it moved in the first quarter of 2024. And that's before putting interest or taxes into the equation. Even the good news for Model e is . . . well . . . not that good. Take the division's reported revenue of around $100 million, which should be cause for some celebration. Because even if that figure falls far short of covering the Model e's various expenses, it's at least a positive figure on its own. Except that $100 million in revenue marks an 84 percent drop compared to the first quarter of last year. This is despite sales only being down by around 20 percent relative to the same period a year prior. Why the big hit to revenue then? Ford blames the losses on the price cuts it made to its EVs in response to changing market conditions. With the battery-electric space continuing to grow, Ford may find itself in a position to need to cut prices again—something it appears that the automaker quite literally cannot afford to do. At the same time, Model e's rising expenses will hopefully put it and Ford in a better position in the coming years, as some of that money is going toward the development of the company's next-generation EVs. If all goes according to plan, these battery-powered Fords will greatly increase Model e's future revenue figures. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60621256/ford-ev-revenue-losses-q1-2024/

  16. More than 150 harvest mice have been reintroduced to a nature reserve in west London - 45 years after the species was last recorded there. The animals became extinct in the borough of Ealing, with the last official sighting at Perivale Wood in 1979. It is the fifth site the mice have been released as part of the Ealing Wildlife Group rewilding project. It aims to create an improved ecosystem for plant and animal life. It is thought their disappearance is because of the loss of their natural habitat, a pattern seen across the UK, with an overall decline of 70% in the native harvest mouse po[CENSORED]tion. At Perivale Wood, which includes ancient oak woodland and neutral grassland, parts of the meadows have been set aside to create wildlife corridors for small mammals. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-london-68911504
  17. Arsenal were having painful flashbacks to the nightmare moments that threw their Premier League title challenge off course last season as a bump in the road threatened to become a giant boulder at Tottenham. The Gunners never recovered from losing two-goal leads in successive weeks at Liverpool and West Ham in April last season, those results the catalyst for a collapse that saw Manchester City claim the title. Here, Arsenal were in danger of throwing away a 3-0 half-time advantage in the most unlikely fashion but gathered themselves to close out a vital win that kept them top of the table with three games left. And the fact that Arsenal crossed the line this time may yet be the difference between a first Premier League title in 20 years and finishing second. Mikel Arteta's side were sitting pretty as they exposed Spurs’ horrible frailty at corners, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s own goal and Kai Havertz’s header bookending Bukayo Saka’s smooth finish on the counter for their second. Not wishing to make life easy for themselves, Arsenal keeper David Raya’s dreadful clearance then gifted Cristian Romero a goal, a nerve-shredding finish ensuing when Heung-min Son scored from the spot three minutes from the end of normal time. The away fans, who had run through their full repertoire of taunts aimed at Spurs, suddenly fell silent fearing the worst, especially when the board went up for six additional minutes. Things, however, have been different with Arsenal this season and they closed out a priceless three points without further alarm, celebrating wildly at the final whistle. To lose the win at this stage, in these circumstances, would have been close to unbearable so the scenes that unfolded in one corner of Tottenham Hotspur Stadium carried a mixture of elation and relief. The Gunners might have cracked last season with the volume turned up to maximum on this most hostile territory but not this time. It may not have been comfortable for that frantic finale but they did the job and that is all that matters. Their character was called into question once more after they were outplayed by Aston Villa at home then went out of the Champions League to Bayern Munich. The response of three straight wins when the pressure is on brooks no argument about their stomach for this fight. It is always posted as the sign of potential champions to win when not at your best, especially when the finishing line is in sight, and Arsenal were short of their usual standards even with that 3-0 lead. At this stage of the season it is a case of never mind the quality, check the result – and Arsenal delivered in trying circumstances against their north London arch-rivals, who would have loved nothing more than inflicting a blow to their title challenge while bolstering their own hopes of a place in the top four. For all Spurs’ attacking prowess, they appear to fly by the seat of their pants when defending under manager Ange Postecoglou, especially at set-pieces, and Arsenal were only too happy to be the grateful beneficiaries of their lack of organisation. Spurs appeared not to have noticed Arsenal’s prowess at corners this season, the two that brought goals here taking their tally to 16 this season, the most by a team in a single campaign since West Bromwich Albion scored the same number under manager Tony Pulis in 2016/17. It was quite the oversight, Havertz’s unaccompanied header a particularly glaring example. Arsenal are now three games from glory, although Manchester City remain favourites for a fourth successive title, but there is no doubt this is a team heading in an upward direction under Arteta, irrespective of this season’s outcome. Declan Rice may have mistimed a challenge on Ben Davies to create the nail-biter by conceding a penalty but otherwise he was imperious, showing exactly what he has brought to this side. The £105m paid to West Ham is not even a point of discussion any more, apart from fans serenading him with the chant: “Declan Rice We Got Him Half Price”. Not quite but there is no doubt Arteta bought a player of the highest quality and influence when they shelled out that vast amount. So on we go into the final stages of the season. Arsenal and Manchester City will fight it out with Liverpool fading. Plenty of drama in this north London derby. And plenty more drama to come as the Premier League season reaches its climax. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/cy63v5xz1q8o
  18. Pedro Sánchez has said he will stay on as Spain's prime minister, following five days of speculation over his future. Mr Sánchez cancelled official engagements last week after a court opened an initial inquiry into his wife over corruption claims. He denounced them as a harassment campaign by right-wing media. "Expressions of solidarity from all sections of society" meant he decided to remain in office, he added. A series of demonstrations were held around Spain over the weekend, calling for the prime minister to continue in his post. More than 10,000 people gathered in front of the Socialist Party (PSOE)'s headquarters in Madrid in a show of support from the prime minister. "Thanks to this mobilisation, I have decided to continue leading the presidency," Mr Sánchez said, vowing to carry on "with more strength if possible". "This isn't about the destiny of one leader - it's about deciding what kind of society we want to be. Our country needs this self-reflection. We have let the mud soil our public life for too long," he said. The accusations against Mr Sánchez's wife, Begoña Gómez, were brought against her by the organisation Manos Limpias (Clean Hands), led by a man linked to the far-right called Miguel Bernad. On Thursday, Madrid's public prosecutor called for the probe to be shelved for lack of evidence. Manos Limpias also acknowledged the allegations might be incorrect because they were based on online newspaper stories - one of which has already proven to be false. In his speech, Mr Sánchez also acknowledged that his statement announcing his decision to take time off to reflect may have been "disconcerting" but said that "there are times when the only way to move forward is to stop, reflect and decide what way we want to go." Monday's announcement was met with jubilation by the leader's allies. "Thank you for defending democracy, for championing decency and for fighting for a supportive and courageous Spain," PSOE spokesperson Esther Peña Camarero said on X. But members of the opposition were less supportive. Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the opposition Po[CENSORED]r Party (PP)'s leader of the Madrid region, accused Mr Sánchez of being "shameless". She said the prime minister had taken five days to decide "how to attack judges, political rivals and the free press" and added: "He should give fewer speeches without journalists and more press conferences where he can be asked questions." Conservative Po[CENSORED]r Party leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo said that Spain did not have "a president worthy of its name" and that Mr Sánchez had "made a fool of this nation of 48 million Spaniards" with his "feigned resignation". Santiago Abascal, the leader of far-right opposition party Vox, said that Mr Sánchez's "theatre" had plunged Spain into "international embarrassment of incalculable dimensions". For his part, Miguel Bernad of Manos Limpias said Mr Sánchez's decision to stay in his post could hurt the PSOE "tremendously" and claimed more evidence would appear that incriminated Mr Sánchez himself. "I believe that in the coming days there may be events that will make him reconsider his position," Mr Bernad said. Last week, Mr Núñez Feijóo accused the prime minister of creating "a political survival operation" and turning the allegations against his wife and his subsequent response into a show ahead of crucial elections. Indeed, Mr Sánchez's decision to suspend public duties came at a tense time for his Socialist Party ahead of European Parliament elections in June and elections in the Catalonia region of north-eastern Spain next month. Pedro Sánchez leads an awkward coalition that includes two Catalan separatist parties, which were persuaded to support the government in return for an amnesty that covered a banned Catalan referendum on secession in 2017. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-68919354
