  2. We knew we’d be seeing the Google Pixel Fold at Google I/O 2023, and now the company's Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 rival has been officially announced as part of Google’s keynote. You can head over to our Google I/O 2023 live blog for news on all the other announcements, including the Pixel 7a and Pixel Tablet, but as for Google's first foldable phone, the company has revealed that this key rival to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 has a Tensor G2 chipset, just like the Pixel 7 line, along with 12GB of RAM, and a choice of 256GB or 512GB of storage. This is also apparently the thinnest foldable on the market at 12.1mm thick. In fact, when unfolded it's also the thinnest Pixel model, coming in at just 5.8mm. It has a 7.6-inch foldable display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a 5.8-inch FHD+ cover display with a 120Hz refresh rate, an IPX8 rating for water resistance, and Gorilla Glass Victus to protect it from scrapes and falls. The best cameras on a foldable The Google Pixel Fold also has a triple-lens camera on the back, which Google claims is the best foldable camera system. This includes a 48MP main camera, a 10.8MP telephoto snapper with 5x optical zoom, and a 10.8MP ultra-wide snapper. There's also a 9.5MP camera on the front, and an 8MP camera on the inside. As for the battery, that's a 4,821mAh one, offering over 24 hours of life, and up to 72 hours in Extreme Battery Saver mode. It charges back up at 30W. And the software is built for foldables, with new features like a dual screen interpreter mode, so when translating speech to another language, both the speaker and the listener can see a screen with the translation on it. Of course, there's a split-screen mode too, so you can make the most of that large inner screen, and there's tabletop mode, which lets you fold the display in half so it can sit on a table like a laptop, with the vertical screen showing the video while the horizontal section shows video controls. You can pre-order the Pixel Fold from today in the US and UK (though there's no word on Australia), and it ships next month. Prices start at $1,799 / £1,749 (around AU$2,655), and if you pre-order then you'll get a Pixel Watch thrown in free. That price is in line with the Galaxy Z Fold 4, so it will be interesting to see whether the Pixel Fold can match what's arguably the best foldable phone. Link

  4. Tokyo-based game developer Game Freak, widely known to gamers for its work on the Pokémon series, announced a partnership with publisher Private Division on a new action/adventure IP. Codenamed Project Bloom, the new game appears to be targeting a more mature audience than the studio's previous titles, if the concept art is any indication. It is currently in early development and scheduled to be released sometime in fiscal year 2026. Kota Furushima, Director at Game Freak, said in a statement: We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to create new IP that is bold and tonally different from our prior work. From the beginning, Private Division was the publisher we wanted to work with on our new game. Their track record and global expertise give us all the confidence to create a sweeping new action-adventure game that we can’t wait to share more about in the future. Michael Worosz, Chief Strategy Officer at Take-Two Interactive and Head of Private Division, added: Over the past three decades, you’d be hard pressed to find a studio which has released more iconic hits than Game Freak. We’re ready to help Game Freak unleash their potential and we’re honored to be the first Western publisher to work alongside this exceptionally talented and proven team to bring a bold new IP to market. Beyond Pokémon games like Sword and Shield, Legends: Arceus, and Scarlet and Violet, Game Freak also released the roleplaying game Little Town Hero in 2019. However, the game didn't fare nearly as well as their main franchise, receiving mixed reviews. In Wccftech's, Nathan Birch rated Little Town Hero 6.5 out of 10. Here's an excerpt of what he thought about it: Game Freak’s latest side thing is Little Town Hero, an adventure that takes place entirely in your standard humble village so many JRPGs start off in. As with most Game Freak titles, Little Town Hero has a fairly simple and predictable story, but isn’t without its charms. Most of the game’s characters are likable, and it’s interesting to see Game Freak break free of their usual E-rated box (this game is rated T and features drinking, smoking, and some surprisingly freaky monster designs). That said, the story can get a bit repetitive – carrying on a Pokemon tradition, Axe has a rival in the game, who you end up fighting at least seven or eight times before the game is over. Your rival isn’t a terrible character, but the way they use him is overkill. [...] As you may have picked up on, I’m a bit split on Little Town Hero. The game’s issues are hard to overlook, and yet, I still happily gobbled up the game’s 10-to-12-hour story in only a couple days. For all the game’s shortcomings, I still found it strangely compelling, although I realize I might be an outlier. For many, if not the majority, or players, a little of this game will likely go a long way. As for Private Division, they've had a quiet couple of years except for the releases of OlliOlli World, Rollerdrome, and Kerbal Space Program 2, though the latter game wasn't that well received in its early access debut. Still, they have an interesting lineup beyond the newly announced Game Freak game. They'll publish a Middle-earth game in development at Wētā Workshop, a survival horror title from Bloober Team, and the ambitious next game from Ori developer Moon Studios, among others. Link

  8. Samsung is apparently working on a new style of foldable phone – and it could be that it releases a future Z-series entry that, when viewed from a certain angle, actually resembles the letter Z. While even the best foldable phones have yet to set the world on fire, it's still early days for these devices, and it makes sense that Samsung would continue to innovate with potential new designs. Practicality? What’s that? Samsung's patents, like those of any brand, are often explorations of new concepts, and not every idea sees the light of day. And while a triple-fold phone like the one pictured in the patent might look cool, we have some questions about how it would work in practice. What would be the point of such a device? Perhaps it could be a paucity of imagination on my behalf, but this seems like it’ll be more cool than useful for most. We can imagine that artists and architects could see value in a device like that, but those haven't been enough to make the Z Fold sell iPhone numbers. And let’s not forget, Samsung's foldables still are susceptible to physics. The first Fold was prone to shattering, and the more moving parts a device has, the more points of failure are introduced. These are things that Samsung would want to address before bringing a new folding phone design to the market. However, just because a device does make it to store shelves, doesn’t necessarily mean that every problem has been solved – as the aforementioned original Galaxy Fold demonstrated. Still, as a patent, all it needs to be is novel, and that’s certainly true in this case. Samsung has floated other interesting foldable ideas we’ve written about in the past. These have included an entry with rotating camera module and a wild slideable, along with rollable and dual fold concepts. When it comes to bringing devices to market, though, Samsung has stuck to its clamshell and book-style foldables for the time being, so it may be a while before we see the South Korean company produce something like the Motorolas’ rollable phone concept. 9. Intel's 14th Gen Meteor Lake-S Desktop CPU support has been added to the upcoming Linux 6.3 Kernel as a part of a patch. Intel Speeds Up Linux Support For 14th Gen Meteor Lake-S Desktop CPUs, Launch Expected Next Year There's more evidence now that Intel is going to launch its 14th Gen Meteor Lake CPU family on the desktop platform. We have seen various leaks over the past few months and the latest information comes within the Linux 6.3 patch which adds support for Meteor Lake-S SPI serial flash along with a list of Meteor Lake-S PCI IDs to the driver list of supported devices. This patch was released recently on the 6th of May. Despite earlier rumors saying that Intel had canceled its 14th Gen Meteor Lake-S Desktop family, it is looking more likely that desktop users will be getting some form of Meteor Lake. Just a few weeks back, we reported that the Meteor Lake-S Desktop CPUs will comprise of up to Core i5 SKUs & TDPs of 35-65W. These chips will exist alongside the higher-end Arrow Lake-S parts which will scale up to Core i9 SKUs with 125W TDPs. Both chips will feature support on the brand-new 800-series chipset platform. The new Intel 800-series chipset platform will support at least two generations of CPUs including Meteor Lake-S and Arrow Lake-S. The platform will drop the existing LGA 1700/1800 socket & use the new LGA 1851 socket which has a similar package size as the existing socket making sure that cooler compatibility remains intact and will come in Z890, H870, B860 & H810 solutions. The 800-series motherboards will also support faster DDR5 memory. Based on the previous information, the 800-series platform will offer the following SKUs within the Meteor Lake-S lineup: MTL-S 22 (6P + 16E) / 4 Xe Cores / 125W TDP MTL-S 22 (6P + 16E) / 4 Xe Cores / 65W TDP MTL-S 22 (6P + 16E) / 4 Xe Cores / 35W TDP MTL-S 14 (6P + 8E) / 4 Xe Cores / 65WTDP MTL-S 14 (6P + 8E) / 4 Xe Cores / 35WTDP Meanwhile, the Intel Arrow Lake-S Desktop SKUs are expected in the following configurations: Arrow Lake-S 24 (8P + 16E) / 4 Xe Cores / 125W TDP Arrow Lake-S 24 (8P + 16E) / 4 Xe Cores / 65W TDP Arrow Lake-S 24 (8P + 16E) / 4 Xe Cores / 35W TDP Intel's own confirmation that they are testing 14th Gen Meteor Lake-S CPUs & reports of the chips already being sampled should be evidence enough that the family is indeed heading for a desktop launch, even if in a limited fashion. Intel is aiming for a 2024 launch for its first 14th Gen Meteor Lake-S Desktop CPUs as Raptor Lake-S chips with up to 6.2 GHz clock speeds will be released for desktops in 2H 2023. Link
  10. Spanish developer Tequila Works was among those who bet heavily on Google Stadia, releasing their third game after Deadlight and RiME, GYLT, as a launch exclusive for the Stadia platform in November 2019. Tequila Works CEO Raul Rubio also defended the platform's unsuccessful launch in early 2020. At the time, he beckoned people to wait until mind-blowing features promised by Google behind the scenes would materialize. He also said streaming was in the same stage as Steam's infancy and that eventually, people wouldn't even question cloud gaming in the future. While those features were never shown to the world and Stadia officially shut down earlier this year, Rubio was definitely right on the importance of cloud gaming. While the market is still relatively small, it is considered to be so important for the future that the UK's Competition and Markets Authority blocked Microsoft's $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard based on cloud gaming competition concerns. Anyway, various developers have been working to bring their Stadia exclusive to PC and consoles. GYLT is among them and the newly published Steam page is a hint that it may be released sooner rather than later. For those unfamiliar with the premise of GYLT, this is a narrative adventure game with stealth, puzzle, and action elements. The protagonist is Sally, a young girl who's had a life. Following the disappearance of her friend Emily and being chased by bullies, Sally somehow finds herself in a twisted version of her hometown filled with her nightmares and fears. The game's soundtrack was composed by Cris Velasco (God of War, Bloodborne, and Chrono Odyssey, among others). The Steam page also shares a few extra details, such as the co-developer of this port (Parallel Circles) and the system requirements. MINIMUM: Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system OS: Windows 10 64-bit Processor: i7-2600K Memory: 16 GB RAM Graphics: GTX 1070 Storage: 6 GB available space RECOMMENDED: Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system OS: Windows 10 64-bit Processor: i7-4790K Memory: 32 GB RAM Graphics: GTX 2070 While the Steam page only speaks to the arrival of a PC version of GYLT, it is conceivable the game will be released on consoles, too. What is presently unclear is whether Tequila Works (also busy with Song of Nuru: A League of Legends Story on behalf of Riot) will improve the game in any way. The original reviews for the Stadia version weren't that great. LINK
