  1. India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has suffered a setback after the chief minister of the southern state of Karnataka resigned minutes before a vote of confidence in the assembly. BS Yeddyurappa said he could not get the numbers to secure a majority. A coalition government will take over and replace the chief minister, who has held office for less than three days. The Supreme Court ordered the vote when the opposition Congress complained the BJP lacked the necessary support. The BJP won 104 of the 222 seats in recently concluded state polls, but fell short of a majority by eight seats. The Congress emerged as the second largest party and declared an alliance with a regional party, Janata Dal (S), which won enough seats to give their coalition a majority in the new assembly. But the governor, Vajubhai Vala, invited the BJP to form the government and even allowed their candidate, BS Yeddyurappa, to be sworn in as chief minister. His controversial decision had led to a major standoff, with many calling it a violation of the constitution. Opposition parties challenged his decision in the Supreme Court, which ruled that the BJP had until 1600, on Saturday to win over eight members from the opposition alliance to form the government. Analysts believe losing Karnataka would have been a major blow for Congress which rules only three of India's 29 states. The BJP and its allies are in power in 21.

  4. I think it’s safe to say that Logitech has been crafting some really solid gaming mice lately. Back in March, I reviewed the G703 and G903 gaming mice, which both come with all the bells and whistles: RGB lighting, Powerplay support, HERO sensors, and LIGHTSPEED technology. I found them to be excellent mice, and I said at the time that they made the best argument yet for ditching your wired gaming mouse. With both of them, however, there was one big hang up: Price. The G703 and the G903 are not cheap mice. At $100 for the G703 and $150 for the G903, you’re certainly putting a lot of money toward peripherals, more than you would have spent on some of the hardware that makes your computer do all the wonderful things it can do. When you toss in the $100 price tag of the Powerplay charging mat – which charges the G703 and the G903 as you use them – you’re looking at a lot of money for items that at one point would have been the cheapest part of your build. READ MORE: Logitech Powerplay Review (including G703 and G903)I certainly think there’s a subset of PC gamers who would pay that amount for something like the G903 and the Powerplay mat and be perfectly happy with their purchases. What about the rest of us, though? What about those of us who salivate at the idea of wireless latency so low that it’s virtually indistinguishable from most wired mice, but don’t have the kind of cash to drop on Logitech’s top-of-the-line offerings? Up until recently, that was a question without an answer, but then Logitech released the G305. At $60, the G305 is a lot less expensive than the G703 and the G903. Obviously, that lower price comes with a few concessions on the hardware side of things, so now the big question is whether or not the G305 is a good alternative to those who want the capability of the G703 or the G903 but don’t want to break the bank. The answer, to my surprise, is yes. I’ve been testing the G305 for a little while now, and I’m pleased to report that this mouse can roll with the big boys – for the most part, at least. You miss out of a few of the exciting features in the G703 and the G903 by opting for the G305, which is to be expected, but in the end, this is still a mouse worth considering if you’re searching for the increasingly obscure area between top-of-the-line and bottom-of-the-barrel. The design of the G305 is rather basic, as you’d expect. It carries Logitech G branding on its palm rest just like every other Logitech G mouse, but the difference here is that the logo isn’t illuminated by RGB lighting. Instead, the Logitech “G” is painted a silvery-white that glimmers ever so faintly when it catches the light. There are five buttons in all on the G305. You’ve got your standard left and right mouse buttons, along with a pair of thumb buttons on the left side of the mouse, making this a right-handed device unless, of course, you lefties have figured out how to hit those shoulder buttons with your pinky (and if you have, give yourself a pat on the back because that’s impressive). The fifth button joins the scroll wheel in the middle of the mouse, and it allows you to change your DPI settings on the fly – a nice thing to have, as it allows you to optimize your mouse sensitivity quickly depending on the game you’re playing. The G305 also doesn’t support Powerplay, which really shouldn’t be much a surprise. Instead, it’s powered by a single AA battery. Logitech says that a single battery is enough to provide 250 hours of game time, though you also have the option of increasing report time slightly (from 1ms to 8ms) with “endurance mode” to increase battery life to a whopping nine months. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the mouse long enough to test either of those claims. Like other Logitech G peripherals, the G350 is compatible with Logitech Gaming Software, but the controls you have are relatively simple. This is where you’ll activate the aforementioned endurance mode and extend your battery life significantly. You also have the option of customizing your DPI settings and tying custom commands to each button on the mouse. It’s nice to see the G305 get some love and customization options within LGS, because we normally wouldn’t expect that from a budget mouse like this. The mouse feels a little on the small size, and it doesn’t fill our your hand nearly as well as something like the G703 does (the G305 isn’t as tall and not quite as long as the G703). It took a little while to adjust after I switched from the G703, but once you get used to it, I think that the G305 mostly feels fine in the hand, if a little light. Its smaller size is understandable, as this is meant to be a portable mouse you can take with you on the go. The Bluetooth dongle the G305 connects to fits snugly under the cover that houses the battery, so you can pack up everything you need within the mouse itself and drop it in your bag. While I can see size being a sticking point for some people, it certainly accomplishes its goal of being a portable mouse that can easily connect to anything with a USB port. The biggest draws of the G305, however, are its LIGHTSPEED functionality and its HERO sensor. These are two components that show up on Logitech’s more expensive mice, so to have them available on a mouse priced for the mainstream is very exciting. While I’m not anywhere near the skill level of a pro gamer and therefore don’t need the ultra-low latency LIGHTSPEED provides, I will say that there is no noticeable difference between the G305 and the G703/G903 when it comes to in-game performance. Both LIGHTSPEED and the HERO sensor seem to work flawlessly on the G305, and they help it stand out from a sea of other wireless mice – some of which aren’t much cheaper than this in the first place. For anyone who has been watching Logitech’s advancements in the wireless space, the fact that these features are available on a $60 mouse should make this a very intriguing device. Wrap-Up While the G305 doesn’t feel quite as good in the hand as the G703 or the G903 do, that’s really the only complaint I have about it. It lacks some of the bells and whistles of more expensive mice in the Logitech G line, but if you can live without things like RGB lighting and Powerplay support, the G305 becomes quite an impressive mouse for the money. I’m happy that Logitech is making technologies like LIGHTSPEED more accessible to mainstream consumers with this release. It’s a really impressive technology that finally got me to ditch wired mice, and I think it needs to be in the hands of more gamers. Furthermore, its battery life, portability, and subtle design mean that this can be a good daily driver for pretty much anyone, regardless of whether or not they’re gamers-by-night like so many of us are. As long as you don’t mind a lightweight mouse that isn’t outfitted with RGB lights like so many PC peripherals these days are, I think you’ll find that G305 offers a lot of value for the money.
  5. More than 100 people have died after a Boeing 737 airliner crashed near Jose Marti International Airport in Havana, Cuban state media say. Three people have survived but are in a critical condition, Cuban Communist Party newspaper Granma reported. The plane was carrying 110 passengers and crew, according to the Mexican firm from which the plane was leased. Two days of national mourning have been declared, after Cuba's worst air disaster since the 1980s. The Boeing 737-201 crashed at 12;08 (16:08 GMT) on Friday, shortly after taking off from Havana on an internal flight to Holguin in the east of the island. There were six Mexican crew members on board; the passengers were mainly Cuban, with five foreigners among them, state-run website Cubadebate reports. "There has been an unfortunate aviation accident. The news is not very promising, it seems that there is a high number of victims," Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said after visiting the crash site. The plane had been leased to state airline Cubana de Aviación by the Mexican company Aerolineas Damojh. The Mexican authorities said the plane was built in 1979 and had been successfully inspected last November. Aerolineas Damojh, also known as Global Air, has three planes in operation. Boeing said that it was ready to send a technical team to Cuba, "as permitted under US law and at the direction of the US National Transportation Safety Board and Cuban authorities". A US trade embargo has been in force against Cuba for many decades. "During take-off (the plane) apparently suffered a problem and dived to the ground," said the Mexican transport department on its website. Images showed a thick column of smoke rising above the crash site as fire crews and ambulances attended the scene. "I saw it taking off," supermarket worker Jose Luis told the AFP news agency. "All of a sudden, it made a turn, and went down. We were all amazed." Radio Havana Cuba said on Twitter that the plane crashed on the road between Boyeros and Havana, about 20km (12 miles) south of the capital. According to industry research, last year was the safest in history for commercial airline travel with no passenger jet crashes. But there have been several serious air disasters this year. Last month, a military plane crashed shortly after take-off in Algeria, killing more than 250 people.

  7. The Egyptian president, Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, has made a rare decision to open the Rafah crossing with Gaza for a month, allowing Palestinians to cross during the holy period of Ramadan. The decision was taken “to alleviate the suffering” of residents in the Palestinian enclave, Sisi said on Facebook on Thursday. The Rafah crossing is Gaza’s only gateway to the outside world not controlled by Israel but Egypt has largely kept it closed in recent years, citing security threats. It is usually only open for a few dozen days a year. About 60 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire on the Gaza border this week, with the victims described by Egypt’s foreign ministry as “martyrs”. A total of 114 Gazans have been killed since 30 March, in the run-up to the opening on Monday of the US embassy in Jerusalem. Egypt has relations with both Israel and Hamas, the rulers of Gaza, and Cairo plays a key role in easing tensions between the two sides and alleviating the pressure on the enclave’s 2 million residents. The Hamas leader, Ismail Haniyeh, paid a brief visit to Egypt on Sunday, where he met the director of the country’s intelligence services, Abbas Kamel.

  8. An explosive eruption at Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano has sent ash 30,000ft (9,100m) into the sky. The eruption took place at 04:15 local time (14:15 GMT) on Thursday, and scientists say further activity is likely in the near future. Staff at the volcano observatory and the national park had been evacuated. Since a new zone of Kilauea began erupting almost two weeks ago, lava has wrecked dozens of homes and forced hundreds of people to be evacuated. National Guard soldiers in Hawaii sought protection from ash and volcanic gases A red aviation code had already been issued, warning pilots to avoid the potentially damaging ash cloud. The US Geological Survey had warned that an explosive eruption at Kilauea was becoming more likely as the volcano's lava lake was lowering. This increases the risk of steam-powered explosions as the magma meets underground water. "We may have additional larger, powerful events," USGS geologist Michelle Coombs told reporters after Thursday's eruption. Hawaii's emergency management agency advised people in the area affected by ash to stay in their homes if possible. It is one of the most active in the world and has been erupting continuously, though not explosively, for more than 30 years. Its last explosive eruption took place in 1924. Even before Thursday morning's explosive eruption, the ash plume from the volcano could be seen from the International Space Station.
  9. A police officer saved many lives at an Illinois high school when he shot a former student who opened fire on campus, say authorities. Officials say Dixon police officer Mark Dallas exchanged gunfire with the unidentified 19-year-old suspect, who was previously expelled. Neither the officer nor any students were hurt in Wednesday morning's confrontation at Dixon High School. The suspect was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The incident took place at 08:00 local time at the school - which is about 100 miles (160km) west of Chicago - as students were rehearsing for their forthcoming graduation ceremony. After firing several shots in a school hallway, the suspect - named in local media as Matt Milby - ran outside the building where he was confronted by the officer. A gunfight broke out, and the former student was injured and taken into custody. Authorities have not specified the suspect's motive or intentions. Skip Twitter post by @GovRauner Today, we should all be very thankful to school resource officer Mark Dallas for his bravery and quick action to immediately diffuse a dangerous situation at Dixon High School. — Governor Rauner (@GovRauner) May 16, 2018 Report End of Twitter post by @GovRauner Dixon Police Chief Steven Howell said: "I could not be more proud of the police officer. Because of his heroic actions, many lives were saved. "With shots ringing out in the hallways of the school, he charged toward the suspect and confronted him head on." As the school was placed on lockdown, students barricaded classroom doors with bookcases and desks, the chief added. Brandon Stehl, a student who was in the gym, told Sauk Valley Media he initially thought the gunfire was a prank. "This is something I never thought would happen. I wish it wasn't real," he said. Another student, Brianna Johnson, told the newspaper of the suspect: "He seemed like a really nice kid, but then everything changed and he was angry and high all the time." Dixon Mayor Liandro Arellano Jr said: "A lot of things went right today and many things could have gone wrong." Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner took to Facebook to praise the officer. In March, the school celebrated Officer Dallas' birthday with a tweet. Skip Twitter post by @dukesduchesses Hey @DixonPolice , a big happy birthday to one of your own! Meanwhile, a school resource officer who failed to prevent a mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida, in February is picking up a generous pension. Scot Peterson, who was assigned to protect Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, is receiving $8,700 (£6,450) a month in retirement payments, state officials disclosed on Wednesday. Seventeen people died as he lingered outside the building with his gun drawn while the shooting - also allegedly by an expelled former student - unfolded. Florida Department of Management Services spokeswoman Nina Ashley said that because Mr Peterson has not been charged with a crime, they are unable to alter his pension payments. Media captionSchool surveillance camera shows deputy waiting outside Andrew Pollack, the father of a slain student who is suing the officer, expressed his anger about the pension on Wednesday. "He hid while my daughter and 16 others were slaughtered! How in the hell is he getting this?" he tweeted. "That money should go to actually securing our schools." Fred Guttenburg, whose daughter, Jaime, was killed at the school, also took to Twitter, writing: "This infuriates me in ways people cannot comprehend. "My daughter would still be alive if this person did his job."
