  2. At least 12 people have been killed and 31 wounded in a suicide bombing at a government ministry in the west of the Afghan capital Kabul. Women and children were among the casualties, according to an official. The attack happened as employees at the Department of Rural Rehabilitation and Development left early for Ramadan. The Islamic State group (IS) has claimed responsibility for the blast, which came just two days after the Taliban agreed to its first-ever truce. Its ceasefire with the Afghan government is due to run for three days during the Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr later this week. The government will continue its operations against other groups, such as IS, during the ceasefire. Separately on Monday, at least 10 people were injured in an armed attack on a provincial education department building in the eastern city of Jalalabad, although the incident has not so far been claimed by any group. Both IS and the Taliban have carried out deadly attacks in Kabul in recent months. More than 30 people were killed in a blast at a Shia shrine in the capital in March, while almost 70 were killed in a bombing at a voter registration attack the following month. Both attacks were claimed by IS.

  4. Tens of thousands of people in the autonomous Basque country of northern Spain have formed a human chain to push for greater autonomy. The organisers say it reached 202km (125 miles) and linked the cities of San Sebastian and Bilbao with Vitoria, the seat of the Basque parliament. The region has a higher degree of self-government than Catalonia - which has been seeking independence from Madrid. Support for outright Basque independence has fallen over the years. Many, though, believe the po[CENSORED]tion should be given the right to vote over their future ties to Madrid. Last month, the separatist group Eta, which had been fighting for Basque independence, formally announced it was disbanding, almost exactly 50 years after claiming its first victim. Deemed a terrorist organisation by the European Union, it killed more than 800 people between 1968 and 2010, the year before it announced a permanent ceasefire. Sunday's participants to the human chain - organised by Basque group Gure Esku Dago (In Our Own Hands) - were asked to write their aspirations on neckerchiefs, which they used as links in the chain. Several also wore symbols of support for Calatan separatists. Last year, a banned referendum on Catalonia's separation from Spain and consequent unilateral declaration of independence by the regional government prompted Madrid to impose direct rule over the region. The courts have since detained politicians involved in the independence drive based on the constitutional clause that Spain is indivisible as a country. The Basque region has more autonomy than any of Spain's other 16 regions, with its own police force, education system, language and a special financial relationship with Madrid. In contrast with Catalonia, where support for secession is close to 50%, support for independence within the Basque country is currently around 15-17% according to polls.

  6. The FBI is investigating after the Chinese government hacked a US Navy contractor and stole highly sensitive security data, US media say. Data stolen in the breach include plans for a supersonic missile project, US officials told the Washington Post. The attacks, in January and February this year, were confirmed by CBS News. Hackers targeted a contractor linked to a US military organisation that conducts research and development for submarines and underwater weaponry. In a separate development, a former US intelligence officer was convicted on charges of giving top-secret documents to a Chinese agent. Kevin Mallory, 61, was found guilty under the federal Espionage Act on Friday. He is due to be charged on 21 September and faces a maximum penalty of life in prison, the US justice department said in a statement. In the case of the US Navy contractor, US officials told the Washington Post that the firm had been working for the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, a military organisation based in Newport, Rhode Island. They added that among the material accessed were data relating to a project known as Sea Dragon, as well as information held within the navy submarine development unit's electronic warfare library. Plans included an anti-ship missile system to be installed on US submarines by 2020. While the data was stored on an unclassified network belonging to the contractor, it is considered highly sensitive due to the nature of the technology under development and the links to military projects. A commander of the US Navy, Bill Speaks, said that measures were in place requiring companies to notify the government when a "cyber incident" had occurred on networks that contained "controlled unclassified information". "It would be inappropriate to discuss further details at this time," he added. The investigation is being led by the Navy with the assistance of the FBI, officials said. On Friday, US Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis ordered a review into possible cybersecurity issues relating to the contractor, CBS News reports, citing the Pentagon inspector general's office. The news comes days before a summit in Singapore at which US President Donald Trump will meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, who counts Beijing among his allies.

  9. Travelling to Japan in June? If you've made a booking with Airbnb, you may have to find alternative accommodation. The online home-sharing giant has had to cancel thousands of reservations after Japan's government put in place a new law around home-sharing. The law regulates Airbnb's most po[CENSORED]r destination market in the Asia Pacific region. Airbnb said changes to the guidance around its implementation meant reservations would now be affected. Under the new law, hosts are required to register their listing and display their licence number by 15 June to remain active. But the Japanese government said on 1 June that any host without a licence number had to cancel upcoming reservations that were booked before 15 June. Airbnb said it would therefore cancel any reservation made by a guest arriving between 15 June and 19 June at a listing in Japan that does not currently have a licence. "We know this stinks - and that's an understatement," Airbnb said. "Japan is an incredible country to visit and we want to help our guests deal with this extraordinary disruption." Airbnb also said it had set up a $10m fund to help those incurring any additional expenses related to having to make alternative travel plans because of cancellations. The booking issue in Japan is the latest hiccup that Airbnb has faced in Asia, one of its fastest growing markets. Earlier this year, the firm said it would have to start sharing information about its customers who book accommodation in China with the government. Data shared with the authorities will now include passport details and the dates of bookings. Hosts listing accommodation in China will also have their details passed on once they start accepting bookings. The online home-sharing giant said the move meant it was now complying with local laws and regulations, "like all businesses operating in China". Airbnb has said it is aiming to have one billion annual guests worldwide by 2028. The firm is one of Silicon Valley's most valuable companies and is already worth an estimated $30bn.

  13. A US judge who was widely criticised for his leniency towards a campus rapist has been removed from office by voters. Judge Aaron Persky handed Stanford University swimmer Brock Turner a six-month sentence in June 2016. But county judges in California are elected, and if a petition to remove them from office garners enough signatures a vote will be held. Such elections are rare - the last time a US judge was recalled was in 1977. Tuesday's vote in Santa Clara County marks the first time a Californian judge has been removed in this way for more than 80 years. "We are outraged at [his] actions, and we don't just want talk, we want to take him out of office," an earlier statement from the campaign to remove him said. "Persky is unfit to sit on the bench," it added. The former Santa Clara County judge recently said he had no regrets about the case. He has also been cleared of misconduct by the California Commission on Judicial Performance. What happened in the Stanford case? Turner was seen by two other students sexually assaulting his victim, now 23, behind an outdoor rubbish bin in January 2015. In March 2016, he was found guilty of three felony charges and faced up to 14 years in prison. But he was handed a much shorter sentence after Judge Persky expressed concern about the impact prison would have on him. The case sparked a national debate about sexual assault and whether wealthy white men are treated more favourably in court. Turner was released after serving only three months in county jail. How did the recall election come about? It has been a long process that started when community leaders in the county began collecting signatures to recall Judge Persky last June. They needed to gather 58,634 signatures - 20% of the voting electorate - in 160 days. Doing so meant voters in Tuesday's countywide elections would vote on removing him. Stanford law professor Michele Dauber led the recall effort along with 50 community leaders. "Women have had enough of rape culture," she said at a news conference last year. "Santa Clara County residents deserve a judge who will protect victims."

  15. Powerful US billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch are funding a multi-million dollar campaign against President Donald Trump's trade tariffs. Three political groups backed by the brothers say they will use advertising, lobbying and grassroots campaigns to push the benefits of free trade. The duo run Koch Industries, one of the world's largest privately-owned firms. The move comes just days after Mr Trump imposed tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from the EU, Canada and Mexico. Charles and David Koch's company has interests ranging from pipelines to paper towels. According to the Koch Industries website, "to millions of Americans, the words 'Koch brothers' and 'political activism' go hand-in-hand". They have previously put money into groups denying climate change and attacking unions and workers' rights, but they have also pushed criminal justice reform and made large donations to the American Civil Liberties Union. Last November, the brothers helped fund Meredith Corporation's deal to buy US magazine publisher Time Inc, which owns of some of the world's most famous magazine brands, sparking concerns that they would use their investment to wield editorial influence. The three groups launching the campaign: Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce, Americans for Prosperity and the LIBRE Initiative, are urging the president to lift the recent tariffs on aluminium and steel imports as well as the proposed tariffs on other imports from China. Americans for Prosperity president Tim Phillips said the tariffs would "hamstring our full economic potential". "There are better ways to negotiate trade deals than by punishing American consumers and businesses with higher costs," he added. The campaign indicates the level of concern among business groups, typically Republican supporters, about the impact of the tariffs. Leaders from the EU, Canada and Mexico have criticised the move and threatened retaliation, sparking fears of a trade war. Donald Trump has said the steel tariffs will protect US steelmakers, which he says are vital to national security.

  19. Jordan's Prime Minister Hani Mulki has resigned after several days of protests against tax rises and austerity measures. The recent demonstrations are the country's biggest in years. Protesters have chanted anti-government slogans and clashed with police, who have fired tear gas and blocked roads. The demonstrators say a new tax bill backed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will hurt the poor and middle class. Mr Mulki had refused to scrap the bill, saying it was up to parliament to decide whether to pass it or not. His government said it needed the money to fund public services and said the new tax bill would mean higher earners pay more. But protesters feared it would further worsen living standards. In recent years, Jordanians have seen prices rise with salaries failing to keep up. On Monday, Mr Mulki was summoned by King Abdullah who demanded his resignation. "Prime Minister Hani Mulki submitted his resignation to the king this afternoon during a meeting at the Husseiniyeh Palace and the king accepted the resignation," a government source told AFP news agency. In Jordan, the monarch has extensive powers and can appoint governments and approve legislation. King Abdullah has reportedly asked Omar al-Razzaz, a former World Bank economist, to form a new government.
