  1. Welcome.
  2. Rocket League is entering The Upside Down, and things have gotten … stranger. Netflix's award-winning Original Series, Stranger Things, has invaded this year's Haunted Hallows, and The Mind Flayer is preparing to make this a truly unforgettable event starting Monday, October 14. This Halloween, all roads lead to Farmstead (The Upside Down). This terrifying take on the once-whimsical Farmstead Arena is watched over by the maddening Mind Flayer, so make sure to look after your teammates. If you're able to make it out of Farmstead with full control of your own Battle-Car, you'll earn Candy Corn to be used in the Haunted Hallows Event Store. The store will have autumn-inspired items, plus some top secret wares developed by the Hawkins National Laboratory that will turn your Battle-Car creations up to Eleven. Take a sneak peak at some of the items below. Haunted Hallows featuring Stranger Things will go live following the October Update on October 14 and will run until November 11. Similar to previous in-game Events, there will be a three-day Redemption Period where you can use your extra Candy Corn in the Event Store. We'll see you in the Upside Down!

  4. World of Warcraft Classic has been out for just over a month, and in that time many of its most hardcore players have hit level 60 and cleared Molten Core and Onyxia, the two endgame raids. Since well before launch Blizzard has said that Classic's new dungeons, raids, and PVP features would be released in six main phases, but until now hasn't indicated when those updates will arrive. In an interview with game director Ion Hazzikostas, which will appear in full on the site early next week, I got a partial answer on when to expect phase 2: This year. "I think it's a matter of later this year, I think we can say definitively," Hazzikostas told me. "Within that timeframe? It's going to depend on a few factors." One of the biggest hurdles to phase 2's launch is "layering," the new system that helped WoW Classic survive the storm of players who rushed the servers on day one. With layering, a given server could handle many times the normal number of players by breaking them into different copies of the same world, spreading out the po[CENSORED]tion so everyone wasn't in the same area at the same time. "Without layering, we simply would not have been able to accommodate anywhere close to the number of players we have on our servers," Hazzikostas explained. "And with some of the natural attrition that we've seen, we would've had a number of servers right now that are underpo[CENSORED]ted. Instead we had servers that were, due to layering, effectively massively overpo[CENSORED]ted even with login queues, during the first couple of weeks, that have now stabilized at large, healthy po[CENSORED]tions that can endure for the months and years to come." But layering was never going to be long-term. Hazzikostas explains that one of the new features coming in phase 2 is world bosses like Kazzak and Azuregos. The point of these bosses is that there should be only one version of them up at a time. Layering would make it easier to repeatedly farm these enemies for loot. "When Kazzak is up, we only want one Kazzak," Hazzikostas said. "That's kind of a central dynamic of how that needs to play out in the outdoor world." The good news is that the process of retiring layering is only "a matter of weeks at this point," Hazzikostas said. Earlier today, community manager Kaivax posted on the Classic forums saying that most po[CENSORED]ted servers were already down to just two layers and 13 were permanently locked in at just one layer. The benefit of that is also that capital cities, which at launch often felt like ghost towns because everyone was spread out across layers, now feel like bustling social centers. Once every server is down to one layer, phase 2 will be much closer to launching. That's good news for everyone: Phase 2 adds powerful new world bosses to fight over, in addition to the Dire Maul dungeon (which will undoubtedly spark a bloody new chapter in Classic's silliest ongoing argument) for veterans. But even players who aren't max level yet will still have something to look forward to with the new Honor system, which rewards (or punishes) killing enemy players. This news about layering and phase 2's launch is just one part of my interview about World of Warcraft Classic. Check back next week for the full story.
  5. Igor over at Igor’s Lab has managed to confirm the GTX 1660 SUPER‘s clock rate as well as the memory standard it will be shipping with – allowing us to get a very good idea of how the theoretical performance of this upcoming NVIDIA GPU is going to stack up against the likes of the AMD RX 5500 XT. Since I don’t really like leaving someone hanging, here’s the overview: the NVIDIA GTX 1660 SUPER is going to beat the AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT but not a possible RX 5600 XT (this card is only rumored at this point). The problem, as many of our readers would remember, is that NVIDIA’s standard GTX 1660 variant supports only GDDR5. Considering AMD’s Radeon RX 5500 is launching soon with GDDR6 and clocked at roughly 1.7GHz, this would mean NVIDIA’s vanilla 1660 stands no chance against the RDNA powered competitor in red. The answer, it turns out, is to equip the card with GDDR6 memory as well. With memory clock rising to 14 Gbps from a mere 8 Gbps and a boost clock that is much higher than the succeeding GTX 1660 TI, the GTX 1660 SUPER offers 94 to 96% of the performance at a much lower price point. n terms of specifications, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER would utilize the TU116-300 die, same as the existing GeForce GTX 1660. It would feature the same core config of 1408 CUDA cores, 80 TMUs, and 48 ROPs. This also means that the sales of the Ti are going to get cannibalized since the performance per dollar value of this card is going to be superior to the vanilla Ti. Using the core count, clock rate and memory Igor calculated the expected performance of not only the NVIDIA GTX 1660 SUPER but the AMD RX 5500 XT as well. He also included a possible RX 5600 XT. Why? Well, the difference between the RX 5700 XT and RX 5500 XT is huge, which means AMD will probably roll out a card to fill this gap in the near future (this is how yield theory works after all). According to Igor’s calculations, the GTX 1660 SUPER will be 2.8% faster than the AMD RX 500 XT and 4.3% slower than the GTX 1660 Ti. The rumored AMD RX 5600 XT will be 11% faster than the GTX 1660 SUPER, meaning it is probably going to face off against the next rank and file in NVIDIA’s lineup rather than the GTX 1660 SUPER. Pricing of the GTX 1660 SUPER is not confirmed at this point but considering the original retailed for $219, you are probably looking at a price point of anywhere from $200 to $279 to account for the more expensive GDDR6 memory vs. strategic price cuts. This memory is faster than the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti which features 12 Gbps dies. The memory would be featured along with a 192-bit bus interface and deliver a total bandwidth of 336 GB/s.

  7. With Halloween approaching, we no longer just have to worry about decorating our crypts with suitably spooky props, we also have to worry about making sure our digital abodes are equally festive. For the denizens of Fallout 4, they can thankfully get most of what they need from a new Halloween decor mod. Lunchbox Mods' Halloween pack adds a bunch of unique items to the build menu, letting you plonk down lots of pumpkins, graves and cheerful skeletons, making sure your neighbours know that Halloween is serious business. The best part of the collection has got to be this poor skeleton who has been tossed in a drum and halfheartedly dressed up with a rubbish homemade mask. Not all costumes can be winners.

  12. Call of Duty: Mobile, the free-to-play version of CoD with two currencies, a battle pass, and a battle royale mode, will be coming out on October 1. And you won't have to play it on your phone or tablet. The Android emulator GameLoop promises to have support for mouse-and-keyboard controls and "exclusive key mapping" when Call of Duty: Mobile arrives on October 1. Whether the fact you're using an emulator will be detected by the servers so you can be matched against other player on emulators—as is the case with PUBG Mobile—remains to be seen. I can't imagine the system requirements will be particularly high, so maybe this will be a valid alternative for the CoD fan stuck on a student laptop or office computer.
  13. The Epic Games Store saw some significant improvements in September, including the addition of a list view in the library and a playtime counter, so you can see how much time you've sunk into Control. (37 hours here.) Bundles are now officially supported, as seen in the recent Batman trilogies, and patch size improvements mean smaller downloads when games are updated. It's a good start—the list view is especially welcome—but even bigger things are on the way. Epic announced today that it's working on a new storefront for the Epic Games Store that will support "curated collections" and other features. "You'll be able to see what games are trending, filter by genre, and more, so that you can find games you'll love faster and easier than before," Epic said. An in-game overlay is also on the way, although it sounds like it's still in the conceptual stage at this point: "It'll be a while before it's fully realized but our thoughts here are centered around giving you ways to interact with your Epic Games store (e.g. library, social, etc.) while in-game."

  15. BMW said it is bringing younger members onto its top management team with the appointments of a new production chief, Milan Nedeljkovic, and a new head of human resources, Ilka Horstmeier. Nedeljkovic, 50, succeeds Oliver Zipse, who was promoted to BMW CEO in August to replace Harald Krueger. Horstmeier, also 50, moves to the human resources post following the resignation of Milagros Caina-Andree last week. Serbian-born Nedeljkovic moves from his current role as senior vice president of corporate quality. The mechanical engineer joined BMW in 1993. His career has included stints as head of the automaker's plants in Munich and Leipzig in Germany, and head of the paint shop at BMW's Mini plant in Oxford, England. Horstmeier, a German national, is promoted to human resources chief from her post as head of the automaker's plant in Dingolfing, Germany. After joining BMW in 1995 with a business administration degree, Horstmeier rose through the ranks at the automaker's Munich, Dingolfing and Regensburg plants. Her previous roles included head of the engine, E-powertrain production division. BMW Chairman Norbert Reithofer said Horstmeier's experience running electrified powertrains' production will bring extensive expertise in a key area for the company. Nedeljkovic's experience in developing digitalization and data analysis and managing the Munich and Leipzig plants, with their high percentage of electrified vehicles, was also key, Reithofer said in a news release.
  16. A weekend getaway cannot be ruled out, especially if you are new to the city and haven't explored much of the south. Just 60 km outside of Chennai, lies the picturesque shore town of Mahabalipuram. Also known as Mamallapuram, this famed town is well-connected with other important cities of south India by means of an extensive road network. A weekend getaway, therefore, cannot be ruled out, especially if you are new to the city and haven’t explored much of the south. How to reach If you are travelling by air, the nearest airport would be the Chennai International Airport. Once in the city, you can take a cab (or personal transport, if you have any) for this one-and-a-half-hour journey. The best route would be the East Coast Road (ECR) — a state highway maintained by the Tamil Nadu government — wherein you would find several pit-stops along the way. Look out for the small beaches en route, and the take in the sweeping scenic beauty. ALSO READ | Explore the unexplored with offbeat destinations in India About the town It is always advisable to read up a little about the history of a place before you visit it, especially if it happens to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mahabalipuram is famous for a collection of 7th and 8th century monuments, believed to have been built during the time of the Pallavas. These monuments are also called the Mamallapuram temples or Mahabalipuram temples in contemporary literature. Best time to visit Ideally the months between November and February, when the days are pleasant and the nights are cool, making it comfortable for tourists looking to do some sightseeing. Places to cover in a day If you are on a more relaxed trip, you might find yourself a suitable accommodation. But, if you want to explore the town in just a day, here are some of the places that you must check out. * The Shore Temple: One of the oldest South Indian temples, it has been constructed in the Dravidian style. It is situated along the shore, facing the waters of Bay of Bengal. The temple comprises three shrines, with two prominent ones dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. It is also one of the most photographed monuments in India. * The Five Rathas: These rathas or chariots are associated with the Mahabharata. It is believed the rathas were dedicated to each of the five Pandava brothers and their wife Draupadi, when they were serving their time in exile. The largest ratha is said to belong to the oldest brother Yudhisthir. * Arjuna’s Penance: This is an enormous rock structure which has intricate carved detailing. It is named so because according to the Mahabharata, Arjun had to perform severe austerities to attain a certain weapon that belonged to Lord Shiva. It is also known as ‘Descent of the Ganges’, because it also depicts this mythological event in its carvings.
  17. Apple's newly released iOS 13.1 will start warning iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max owners who replace their screens with a third-party display with an "Important Display Message." "Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple display," it reads. The warning echoes a battery health notification Apple rolled out for iPhone XR, XS and XS Max earlier this year. The company said that was its way of making sure batteries in its devices are safe. With its displays, Apple noted that unofficial replacements can degrade multitouch performance (so the screen might fail to register your touch or react to unintentional touches), struggle with display brightness, show incorrect colors or drain your battery quicker. The display warning itself won't impact your ability to use your iPhone or its display, Apple noted. However, the notification will show up on its lock screen for four days and within the Settings app for 15 days. After that, you'll be able to find it by going to Settings, General, then About. In addition, you might see an additional notification saying "Apple has updated the device information for this iPhone" -- meaning the company is recording which devices have unofficial displays for future repairs. It also means you'll be able to find out if a repair shop swapped out your iPhone screen for a third-party one or if your secondhand iPhone has been tinkered with. Regardless, Apple advised that you stick to Apple Stores, Apple Authorized Service Providers and Apple Repair Centers when getting your iPhone fixed. The company didn't immediately respond to a request for further comment.
