  1. PlayStation Plus subscribers, your September 2019 free PS4 games have been announced: Starting September 3, Batman: Arkham Knight and Darksiders 3 will be available to download for free from the PlayStation Store. They'll be free to claim through September 30. In the meantime, there's still a few days left to grab August's free games--you have until September 2 to download Wipeout Omega Collection and Sniper Elite 4. DC's dark superhero stars in Batman: Arkham Knight, which released in 2015. The third-person, single-player action-adventure game is set in an open-world Gotham City where you (as Batman) can explore freely, driving the iconic Batmobile or using your cape to fly. The story is set one year after Joker's death, as antagonists Scarecrow and Arkham Knight launch an all-out attack on Gotham City, forcing all civilians to evacuate and leaving only criminals behind to inhabit the city. Next month, you can also grab Darksiders III, a hack-and-slash Metroidvania-style adventure released in 2018. You'll take control of Fury, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, who is tracking down the Seven Deadly Sins. Fury has quite a few weapons in her arsenal, ranging from whips and daggers to elemental magic. Wtih a third-person perspective, the game also involves crafting, puzzle-solving, and some platforming. If you've been on the fence about renewing PS Plus, you can get a 12-month subscription on sale at Ebay right now. Normally sold for $60, the yearly membership is only $40 as part of Ebay's ongoing Labor Day sale this week. It's a great price, especially since you can stack PS Plus subscriptions if you're already a member. You can check out that deal below.
  2. AMD might not own the GPU performance crown, but it was able to snag away a significant portion of discrete graphics card share from Nvidia, and leapfrogged its rival in overall GPU shipments. That's according to a fresh report from Jon Peddie Research (JPR), a market research and consulting firm that routinely tracks these things. For the second quarter of 2019, JPR's data has AMD owning a 17.2 percent of the GPU market, up an impressive 9.2 percent from the previous quarter. Meanwhile, Nvidia stayed relatively flat at 16 percent (technically a 0.1 percent decline). Intel, on the other hand, lost 1.4 percent, but is still way out ahead with a lion's share of the GPU market at 66.9 percent. Here's a breakdown of how things stand, versus last quarter and last year: AMD—17.2 percent (up 1.5 percent sequentially, up 2.4 percent YoY) Nvidia—16 percent (down 0.1 percent sequentially, down 1 percent YoY) Intel—66.9 percent (down 1.4 percent sequentially, down 1.4 percent YoY) Bear in mind that these numbers include all computer graphics shipments (though not console GPUs), including AMD's accelerated processing units (APUs). That's why Intel is way out ahead—a large portion of its processors have integrated graphics, and it ships a lot more CPUs than AMD, especially once you factor in laptops. Still, AMD's rise is notable, given that it hasn't been ahead of Nvidia for the past five years. The recent gain was not all due to integrated GPUs, either. When looking at graphics cards for desktop PCs, AMD now accounts for nearly a third of the market, at 32.1 percent. That still leaves Nvidia with a big majority at 67.9 percent, but if we go back just one quarter, AMD was sitting at 22.7 percent. That's a 9.4 percent jump from one quarter to the next. And if we go back to the end of the 2018, Nvidia was sitting at 81.2 percent. The split is a little more lopsided in laptops, where Nvidia's discrete GPUs hold a 74 percent share to AMD's 26 percent. Here's why Nvidia should be concerned. The discrete GPU figures take into account its GeForce RTX 20-series and GeForce GTX 16-series, both based on its latest Turing GPU architecture, but AMD's recently launched its Radeon RX 5700 series. Graphics cards based on AMD's Navi GPU came out in July. Navi could very well add to AMD's momentum, both in overall and discrete GPU shipments. And this is all happening without the benefit of ray tracing support, as it pertains to AMD. It's probably a bit optimistic to hope for a GPU price war, but hey, anything is possible.

  5. "The stages look incredible", we wrote in our Dirt Rally review back in 2015. "Dust plumes out from under your car as drones buzz through clear skies. Ice patches shimmer as you hammer past snow-laden trees, picking out the road through fog. Hot air balloons rest as you slide a 1970s escort around a hay bale. Mud flings into the air as you tumble a Lancia Delta down a cliff towards a pond. Watching replays are a joy and irresistible if you've had a decent run, made all the better by respectable engine noise and chattering pace notes." Players agree, and it's sitting on a Mostly Positive rating on Steam. Until September 1 at 10am Pacific Time, or until supplies last, you can get a free Steam key for Dirt Rally by subscribing to the Humble Bundle newsletter.

  7. Respawn kicked off an Iron Crown Collection event in Apex Legends earlier this month that landed with a thud for a lot of fans. The biggest issue was that some in-game items, particularly Legendary skins, were only available through event-exclusive Iron Crown packs. It was a complicated event but the simple version is that costs were very high—the "Raven's Bite" Heirloom weapon for Bloodhound effectively costs $170—and players weren't happy. Apex eventually acknowledged that the event "missed the mark" and moved Legendary skins to the standard Apex Store on a rotating basis, but that apology just led to further recriminations and some strongly-worded pushback from multiple developers, all of which ultimately culminated in an apology to the fans from Respawn CEO Vince Zampella. Amidst all of that, there was some actual information about the game itself, specifically with regard to future events. Respawn said when it announced the updates to the Iron Crown Collection event that future events would be structured differently, and said that its "messaging for expectations needs to be clearer." Today, it began the follow-through on that with a broad overview of the three types of events—Season Launches, Collection Events, and Themed Events—coming to Apex. Season Launches are the big ones, and will, generally speaking, feature a major map update, a new Legend, new items, "meaty" changes to the meta, updates to the Ranked mode, maybe some new features (like Ranked mode), and a new Battle Pass. Themed events, like the Legendary Hunt, will take place during a season and will—again, generally—have a time-limited mode, event-specific challenges with cosmetic rewards, and "a mix of event limited and evergreen cosmetics available for direct purchase." There may also be a "town takeover" or small map changes, and possibly some new lore. Collection events like the Iron Crown will be very similar to themed events, but on a somewhat smaller scale; Respawn also emphasized that cosmetics offered during Collection events will be available in both event-specifc crates and for direct purchase. "The main goal for all these events is to add new ways to play, so that we are keeping the game fresh and exciting for our players. Each of these events has a unique theme with a variety of components, but share the same general framework," director of product management Lee Horn said. That framework includes: One or more new gameplay changes such as permanent and limited-time modes (Ranked or Solos respectively), map updates and town takeovers, balance changes, new characters, new weapons, and more New free progression content via challenges or the free Battle Pass track Purchasable cosmetics via Battle Pass, Packs, and/or the Shop "While these are our three main event structures, we’re also always working on new features, bug fixes, balance changes, and quality of life improvements that come out in periodic patch updates," Horn said. "As always, we appreciate all of your support and feedback. We hope this blog gives y’all a better sense of what to expect in a season of Apex Legends." The next Apex Legends themed event will kick off in early September and will be focused on "a certain Phase Expert"—I take that to mean Wraith—while a new Collection event will run in October.

  9. Rainbow Six Siege will be free to try for an entire week starting from August 28 and ending September 9. During that period, you'll have access to 20 legacy operators, and all progress won during the period will carry over if you choose to purchase the game. According to Ubisoft, it'll be a 70 percent discount off the Deluxe, Gold and Ultimate versions. The free weekend will likely finish up just before the next expansion, Operation Ember Rise, hits some time in September. That's live on test servers at the moment, but Morgan has a good rundown of its new operators and the new Kanal map rework (which looks sweet). The game is also getting with the times and introducing Battle Passes some time during the Operation Ember Rise season. Cheerfully, the first one will be free.
  10. Brazilian warplanes have started dumping water on fires across the Amazon, as President Jair Bolsonaro’s government scrambles to contain the damage following an international outcry. A video posted by Brazil’s Defence Ministry showed a military plane pumping thousands of litres of water as it passed through clouds of smoke close to a forest canopy in Rondonia state. Mr Bolsonaro, the country’s far-right president, has authorised military operations in seven states. The details of most initiatives remain unclear. Environmental groups believe the Amazon fires have been deliberately started, as people try and clear the land, and Mr Bolsonaro has been accused of tacitly encouraging the destruction. “What he has done through his words and deeds is given the go ahead to farmers and illegal loggers, encouraging them into indigenous communities,” Richard George, head of forests at Greenpeace, previously told The Independent. Mr Bolsanaro has claimed, without evidence, that the fires could have been set by non-governmental groups who have had their funding taken away by his government. Amazon rainforest swept by fires: In pictures On Friday, after facing international pressure, Brazil’s president said he would send the army in to combat the flames. Many Brazilians took to the streets in Rio de Janeiro and other cities on Sunday to demand the administration do more. Some held banners that read: “Bol$onaro is burning our future”. The Defence Ministry said 44,000 troops were available in Brazil’s northern Amazon region but did not say how many would be used where and what they would do.

You can try verifying game files by running the launcher as administrator and clicking on "Verify integrity of game files". If that didn't help, then try to set "sv_lan 0" in the console. If this doesn't work as well then try deleting the game completely and install it once again.
  12. Forty-six law enforcement officers were shot and killed last year in the line of duty. One near-fatal encounter was caught on camera. Newly-released video shows two Pennsylvania state troopers in a gun battle with a man about to be sentenced for attempted murder. CBS News’ Tony Dokoupil reports.
  13. "How far would you go to find your brother?" is the simple question driving Life is Strange 2 Episode 4, the penultimate episode of Dontnod Entertainment's story-driven adventure game. Daniel is the lost brother, and Sean is trying to find him. But Sean is in pretty dire straits: he starts the episode in a hospital and under arrest, having lost an eye—and much of his confidence—in the last episode. Episode 4 is out now, and you can pick it up for $8/£6.50 on Steam or the Humble Store.
  14. The Amazon Rainforest is known to be a home to millions of different species, from plants, to animals, to even some indigenous tribes. It’s been referred to as the Earth’s lungs, because it produces 20% of the oxygen in it’s atmosphere. About half the size of the United States of America, the Amazon Rainforest has a huge impact on slowing down global warming, and the world as a whole. But recently, wildfires have gotten so out of control, cities have been completely blacked out, with smoke from the fires covering their skies. It seems as of now, the Brazilian government and president Bolsonaro isn’t stepping in to slow down the fires, and up until quite recently, news stations weren’t covering the story either. In hopes of raising awareness about how important the Amazon Rainforest really is, we decided to answer the question What If The Amazon Rainforest Burned Down?
  15. The latest "letter from the front" providing updates on the state of Battlefield 5 from DICE's senior producer Ryan McArthur explains that the planned competitive 5v5 mode has been canceled. "Not creating this mode was a tough decision," McArthur writes, "but vital for us to more quickly reach our bug-crushing and content goals." He goes on to say, "However, we will still pursue building a competitive gaming experience in Battlefield™. We know that there’s already an existing competitive scene in our community, and we’re helping build features to support these communities. We want to work more closely with our players to help improve the tools that they have available to shape their play experience. This way, we can better support the places where competitive Battlefield V play already exists. "This change in focus allows us to better deliver on our promise of new content that we know our players will love, as well as providing new ways to enjoy some of our more intense existing modes." He also mentions what's coming in patch 4.4, which includes fixes for "stuttering issues, desyncs seen on hitboxes, as well as some tweaks to the Commorose" as well as two more infantry maps and increased max Rank. "You’ll now be able to go beyond Rank 50 and start earning XP on your new journey to Rank 500." It's also mentioned that these letters from the front will be monthly from now on, and updates will be coming out more regularly in general.

  19. For those who do not want to spring for Asus's upcoming ROG Strix XG438Q, a 43-inch FreeSync 2 HDR gaming monitor with a 4K resolution and 120Hz refresh rate, there will be a cheaper version offered. The XG43VQ, as it's called, matches the XG438Q in size, but there are some key differences. For one, the XG43VQ offers a lower resolution, at 3840x1200 (instead of 3840x2160). That gives it a 32:10 aspect ratio, compared to 16:9 on the other one. The refresh rate is the same at 120Hz, but as it pertains to HDR visuals, certification drops down a notch from DisplayHDR 600 (XG438Q) to DisplayHDR 400. So, it will have a peak brightness of at least 400 nits, which is required for the entry-level DisplayHDR badge, but is unlikely to do HDR content justice. In all reality, a peak brightness of 1,000 nits is where HDR really shines (literally). The XG438Q doesn't hit that level either, though it has a peak brightness of 750 nits, which is at least in the neighborhood. In short, the XG43VQ trades some HDR performance and a bit of resolution for a lower price tag. Specifically, Asus is pricing it at €899. That works out to around $1,000 in US dollars, and while companies do not always follow a straight conversion from one territory to the next, we suspect it will be around that price in the US (Asus has not announced US pricing yet). The XG43VQ is one of three 43-inch monitors Asus planning to launch. Here's a quick and dirty rundown of each: Asus ROG Strix XG438Q—3840x2160 (16:9), 120Hz, DisplayHDR 600, FreeSync 2, MSRP £1099 (~$,1350), releases late August or early September Asus ROG Strix XG43UQ—3840x2160 (16:9), 144Hz, DisplayHDR 1000, MSRP €1,499 (~$1,660), releases in Q4 2019 Asus ROG Strix XG43VG—3840x1200 (32:10), 120Hz, DisplayHDR 400, MSRP €899 (~$1,000), no release date given Excuse the different currencies—Asus has revealed details about these monitors at different times and apparently has not figured out pricing for each territory yet.
  20. If you missed out on snagging a free copy of For Honor on the Epic Store earlier this month, you've got another chance. Ubisoft's slash 'em up is free to keep through Uplay until August 27. You might actually have an extra couple days, depending on your region. While Ubisoft's UK account says the offer is valid until August 27, here in the US the page says it's running until 4 a.m. ET on August 29. Either way, you've got a solid week in which to claim a free copy of the standard edition of For Honor, which is a fun game about knights, samurai, and vikings hitting each other with a wide variety of pointy objects. Why are they fighting each other? "Because it's cool," Andy wrote in his For Honor review. And it is cool: For Honor has a unique combat system that reveals a lot of depth as you get into it. There's a variety of game modes that range from one on one duels to large-scale battles with endlessly-spawning grunts to wail on. There's also a fairly lengthy single-player campaign, which serves mostly as a way to familiarize yourself with some of the movesets so you can handle yourself in online bouts. For Honor has also grown over the past two years, adding new maps and heroesand occasionally running endearingly silly limited-time events.
  21. A new Need for Speed: Heat gameplay trailer unveiled today at Gamescom showcases fast cars, deep customization, and the return of the cops. Wait, were they gone? NFS: Heat will have different gameplay options for day and night. During the day, you'll be able to earn money in sanctioned racing events, although the police will still be roaming the streets and looking to slow you down. At night things get a little more frantic: Illegal street races provide an opportunity to increase your rep, but the police come off the leash. The more your "heat" rises, the more they'll do to shut you down. Hideouts and the garage provide a GTA-flavored avenue of escape from pursuit. Free roaming "AllDrive" multiplayer will be enabled in Need for Speed: Heat at launch, and rides belonging to members of your "crew" will be displayed in your garage, so you'll be able to keep up with their progress and see what sort of machines they're taking to the street. Along with customizing your car, you'll also be able to dress up your avatar as you see fit, complete with what I assume is officially licensed apparel. Need for Speed: Heat comes out on November 8.
