Content creation platforms the world over can’t seem to resist TikTok’s short-form video style, and now YouTube is doubling its efforts to compete with the social media behemoth by implementing a new TikTok-style creator tool. As part of its latest app update(opens in new tab) on iOS and Android devices, YouTube has launched a feature that allows creators to instantaneously convert up to 60 seconds' worth of previously uploaded long-form videos into Shorts. The tool utilizes the platform’s existing editing suite – text, timeline editor, filters, etc. – and YouTube says that, if the selected footage is less than 60 seconds, creators can shoot additional video using the Shorts camera or upload more footage from their gallery. Any Shorts created using old videos will, of course, link back to the original YouTube upload, and only the creators themselves can import and/or tamper with their existing content library. On the surface, the feature is a creator-led innovation, one that gives creators another avenue through which to attract potential subscribers to their long-form content (if, for instance, a user is interested in a short-form version of a longer video, they may be inclined to click through and continue watching). But this update also exposes YouTube’s desperation to ramp up its short-form library in a bid to better compete with the likes of TikTok and Instagram. Clearly, not enough creators are uploading straight-to-Shorts content, and given the backlash over YouTube’s automatic conversion(opens in new tab) of some vertical videos into Shorts in recent months, the company is now banking on the efficacy of giving users the autonomy to make that choice for themselves. It’s more organic – albeit encouraged – Shorts growth, and YouTube users should expect to be greeted with a whole lot more vertical video content in the coming months.
  2. Intel's Arc graphics cards have been the main discussion of this weekend in the rumor mill and now we have more info coming in from Igor's Labs. According to Igor Wallossek, who managed to obtain an updated Arc schedule, the lineup would see a gradual launch starting from the 5th of August till the 29th of September. Intel's Arc Desktop Graphics Card Are Coming! Launching Between August & September To Meet Summer 2022 Deadline This would be the third launch schedule that we have heard this weekend regarding Intel's Arc line of desktop graphics cards. The first came from Moore's Law is Dead in a rumor which was turned down by Intel's CEO, Pat Gelsinger, and VP of Graphics, Raja Koduri with both confirming that Arc is still very much on track for a Q3 2022 launch and now we have Igor's Labs confirming this as well. If they’re going to stick to the current timeframe, the range that’s being colocated to me now is between Aug. 05, 2022 and Sept. 29, 2022. This means that there is enough time to launch the three announced larger models one slice at a time. It is interesting that the internal documents no longer report about a large-scale, joint launch event, but it could rather be a kind of “silent” launch, which could be carried out gradually in the retail sector and via only a few media. via Igor's Labs The launch is said to take place gradually and we may even see each card become available in retail one by one rather than all being launched at once. If you look at Intel's marketing strategy, they are doing this already. The Intel Arc A380 launched first and then Intel started talking about their high-end Arc A750 Limited Edition graphics card followed by the Arc A770 Limited Edition. The company is also said to give select media the opportunity to review these cards ahead of the launch but whether these media only include tech YouTubers or written media outlets remains to be seen. The exclusive reviews will only be based on Intel's own Arc reference designs while AIBs models will have no such restrictions but the rest would also have to wait longer considering that we have already seen one AIB, limited to China, release its cards weeks after launch to DIY and all reviewers who tested it had to purchase the product rather than Intel sending them out one by themselves for reviews.   3. On-demand convenience platform Swiggy on Friday said it will allow permanent work-from-anywhere for a majority of its employees. Going forward, corporate, central business functions and technology teams will continue to work remotely, the company said in a statement. They will converge once in every quarter at their base location for a week to promote in-person bonding, it added. However, employees who are in "partner-facing roles" are required to work from the office for a few days a week from their base locations, it added. Swiggy said the decision to allow permanent work-from-anywhere was taken based on "team needs and feedback from several managers and employees, who vouched for the flexibility and increased productivity working from home has given them in the last two years". "Our focus was to enable employees with as much flexibility in their work life within the contours of their job. We observed global and local talent trends while also having our ears to the ground listening to the pulse from employees, managers and leaders," Swiggy Human Resources Head Girish Menon said. At present, Swiggy has a total workforce of around 5,000 working out of 487 cities in 27 states and four Union Territories across India, the company said. In May, Swiggy acquired Dineout, a dining out and restaurant tech platform. The food delivery app announced that post acquisition, Dineout will continue to operate as an independent app. This move allows Swiggy to offer dining out table reservations and events as well as strengthen its business. It will enable restaurant partners to reach more customers in order to grow their business. As per Swiggy, the acquisition will allow it “to explore synergies and offer new experiences in a high-use category.” Swiggy also offers a comprehensive membership program ‘Swiggy One' giving its customers benefits across its on-demand services. Probably, one thing that was missing from the app was an option to allow its customers book tables, and get discounts on dining out options.   4. TikTok may be working on a rival to Spotify and Apple Music, based on a new trademark application its parent company ByteDance just filed in the US. The trademark is for a service called TikTok Music. Not only does the name imply that it’ll be a rival to the world’s best music streaming services, but the trademark application spells it out for us. ByteDance calls TikTok Music a smartphone and computer application that “enables users to purchase, play, share [and] download music” as well as offering the ability to listen to non-downloadable (read: streamed) audio and video. That’s a Spotify and Apple Music clone description if we ever heard one. ByteDance has also described the service as having advertising services, perhaps implying that there will be an ad-supported option like Spotify’s free tier. However, we’ll have to wait and see what it announces, if it launches the service at all. While it’s more than likely that we’ll see TikTok Music launch soon, we can’t take this trademark as a guarantee. Not only might ByteDance decide to scrap its plans for the service, but it could also face some problems from various governments. Lawmakers in the US(opens in new tab) and UK(opens in new tab) have already expressed concerns about TikTok and its connections to China. If ByteDance can’t alleviate these worries then we could see it lose its ability to operate in certain parts of the world. If that happens we can say bye-bye to TikTok and any potential expansion plans like TikTok Music. Will TikTok revolutionize the music industry a second time? (Image credit: Shutterstock) TikTok Music could change the game, again Assuming there are no bumps in the road though, TikTok Music sounds like a pretty logical next step for the social media company. TikTok is one of the best ways to discover new music, thanks to dance and meme trends hijacking snippets of songs and making them go viral. Our own Daryl Baxter even used the app to rework his wedding playlist. With that in mind, TikTok Music would likely make finding the full versions of catchy tracks way easier – especially if you’re looking for a cover or a remix rather than an original song. Rather than having to scroll through track lists on rival services, we could see users being able to press a couple of buttons on TikTok and instantly being sent to the full track on TikTok Music. If we’re lucky, we might even see some of TikTok’s creativity brought into TikTok Music. The trademark discusses giving users the ability to edit video and audio – perhaps letting people create and share their own remixes and music videos. We’ll have to wait and see what unfolds over the coming weeks and months but Apple and Spotify will want to watch out. TikTok is already taking over Google Maps as the best way to discover new places to visit, these other apps could soon find their user base snapped up by the app, as well.
  5. Intel's Arc GPU lineup and the subsequent graphics products have faced major controversy ever since the lineup missed its initial launch schedule in 2021. Now some internal documents & a list of leaked roadmaps regarding the Arc graphics card lineup have been shared by Moore's Law is Dead which might give a sense of what's really going on at Intel's Graphics Division. Intel Arc GPUs & Desktop Graphics Cards Allegedly "Original" Roadmap Detailed, Lineup Faces Major Delay, Talks of Refreshes & Cancellations Intel Graphics' original marketing team was led by Chris Hook who stated that the first discrete graphics products will be available by 2020. Two years have passed since and the GPU lineup is far from public availability. The Graphics division is still spearheaded by Raja Koduri, a brilliant & highly ambitious, and visionary engineer who's applauded for his work by his former employer, AMD. Joining the ranks of Intel's Graphics marketing team were Tom Petersen (former technical marketing manager at NVIDIA) and Ryan Shrout (Chief Editor at PCPerspective). Both Intel reps have been doing rounds over at YouTube and social channels to provide us an update on their current and upcoming Arc GPUs but while we have been told that Arc discrete graphics cards are getting ready for a major launch later this summer, things may not be going as planned for Intel's Graphics division. Intel Arc Roadmap: July Launched Pushed Back To September? As Moore's Law is Dead points out with several alleged documents & roadmaps that come directly from Intel, it looks like the Arc discrete graphics card lineup may have slipped past its original time-frame massively. In an Arc Graphics Desktop SKU schedule, we can see that a global launch of the lineup was scheduled by the end of July and would've included a total of four products for desktop consumers. This was supposed to be a hard launch with global availability of Arc GPUs from OEMs & SIs while a DIY launch was expected around the end of August. The same roadmap also states that Intel's Arctic Sound-M, a lineup that was originally going to be on a far grander scheme with multiple high-end workstation SKUs planned under the Xe-HP brand but was later canned, would be launching on 26th July but only yesterday, Intel provided another teaser of its Arctic Sound-M discrete GPUs which will be incorporated within server racks from OEMs such as Supermicro. So this kind of makes the roadmap believable considering there was something on Intel's graphics roadmap agenda that happened close to the expected date. Our data center GPU code-named Arctic Sound-M has started production and is now shipping to customers supporting a diverse range of workloads, starting with media streaming and cloud gaming, followed by support for AI visual inference and virtual desktops. Intel CEO, Pat Gelsinger, Q2 2022 Earnings Call An interesting event is known as the "Desktop Launch Event: The Arc Experience" was also planned close to SIGGRAPH 2022 in the coming month which would've included press deep dives and a customer showcase panel. That may have been slipped to late September as the only customer showcase that Intel themselves has talked about is the "Intel Truck" with several Arc-powered PCs which will be heading out to LANFest though that event is scheduled for late September.

  8. In the summer of 2020, after a police officer killed George Floyd, Rockstar Games quietly shelved a mode of play it had planned to release for its Grand Theft Auto Online game. Called Cops ‘n' Crooks, the mode was a twist on the children's game where players organize into teams of good guys and bad guys, but seemed especially tone-deaf during the global reckoning over police violence. Senior executives at the company, concerned about how the narrative might be interpreted during a time of heightened skepticism and mistrust of American police, put it aside. They still haven't made plans to bring it back, according to people familiar with development. This was one of several politically sensitive actions Rockstar, a division of Take-Two Interactive Software, has taken in recent years. The company removed transphobic jokes from the most recent console release of Grand Theft Auto V and significantly narrowed its gender pay gap. Rockstar's next game, Grand Theft Auto VI, will include a playable female protagonist for the first time, according to people familiar with the game. The woman, who is Latina, will be one of a pair of leading characters in a story influenced by the bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde, the people said. Developers are also being cautious not to “punch down” by making jokes about marginalized groups, the people said, in contrast to previous games. Moves like these once seemed unthinkable for a company whose best-selling franchise is a satirical depiction of America that involves playing gangsters who kill civilians and where women are mostly depicted as sex objects. Grand Theft Auto V was a nihilistic parody that threw insults at everything, from right-wing radio hosts to liberal politicians. Inside the company, the tone wasn't much different. Rockstar employees described a workplace culture full of drinking, brawling and excursions to strip clubs. The company was an early symbol of an industry-wide problem of long hours at the office, known as crunch, in which staff were expected to be at their desks many nights and weekends in order to keep a game on schedule. That strategy was financially successful and turned Grand Theft Auto V into the second-best selling game of all time, with 165 million copies sold. It also led to burnout, attrition and a public controversy in 2018 that prompted hundreds of Rockstar employees to speak out about the difficult work environment. Since that outcry, Rockstar has attempted to reinvent itself as a more progressive and compassionate workplace, according to interviews with more than 20 people who work there or left recently, all of whom requested anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly. One employee described it as “a boys' club transformed into a real company.” A spokesman for Rockstar declined to comment. Can a kinder, gentler Rockstar still produce the chart-topping caliber of game the studio has become known for? Some employees aren't sure. Morale across the company is higher than it's ever been, according to many staffers. But the development of Grand Theft Auto VI has been slower than impatient fans and even longtime employees have expected. Much of that has to do with the pandemic, but the delay is also due to some of the changes that the company implemented in an effort to improve working conditions, such as a restructuring of the design department and a pledge to keep overtime under control. Some workers say they're still trying to figure out how to make games at this new iteration of Rockstar and wonder even what a Grand Theft Auto game looks like in today's environment. Besides, several Rockstar employees pointed out that you can't really satirize today's America — it's already a satire of itself. Between the company's new mandate and the 2019 departure of Dan Houser, who led creative direction on many previous Rockstar games, all signs suggest Grand Theft Auto VI will feel very different than its predecessor. Rockstar Games was founded in 1998 by a handful of British game-makers as a subsidiary of Take-Two. With 2001's Grand Theft Auto III and its sequels, the company revolutionized open-world video games and grew to employ thousands of people, with offices in California, New York, across the UK and beyond. Grand Theft Auto products accounted for 31 percent of Take-Two's $3.5 billion in total revenue in fiscal 2022, according to company filings. The studio was built on a culture of seven-day work weeks, said Jamie King, a founder who left after eight years. But, he said, that sort of culture is “unsustainable.” Games like Red Dead Redemption and Max Payne 3 required what some employees referred to as “death marches”—months of mandatory 14-hour days and weekends that took a toll on employees' lives, mental health and sometimes marriages. In October 2018, shortly before the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, Houser, one of Rockstar's founders, said his team had been working “100-hour weeks” to finish the game. The comments, which Houser later walked back, were the tipping point for many employees. Similar complaints have rippled through the industry in recent years. Game developers working at Activision Blizzard, Riot Games and Ubisoft Entertainment SA have all criticized their employers for issues ranging from sexual discrimination to overwork. Activision Blizzard is being sued by the state of California over allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination. While those companies have acknowledged their issues and vowed to change, none has done as much in response to a worker revolt as Rockstar, according to people across the company. The transformation of Rockstar includes changes to scheduling, converting contractors to full-time employees and the ouster of several managers that employees saw as abusive or difficult to work with. When the pandemic started, workers received care packages, cloth masks and surprise bonuses. During the protests over the death of George Floyd, a Black man who was murdered by police officers, the company said it would match donations to Black Lives Matter charities. Employees have been given new mental health and leave benefits. A new policy called “flexitime” allows staff to immediately take time off for every extra hour they work. And for the past four years, management has promised that excessive overtime won't be required for Grand Theft Auto VI, one of the most-highly anticipated games by fans and investors on the planet. Sticking to that pledge has already prompted changes to the game. Original plans for the title, which is code-named Project Americas, were for it to be more vast than any Grand Theft Auto game to date. Early designs called for the inclusion of territories modeled after large swaths of North and South America, according to people familiar with the plans. But the company reeled in those ambitions and cut the main map down to a fictional version of Miami and its surrounding areas. Rockstar's plan is now to continually update the game over time, adding new missions and cities on a regular basis, which the leadership hopes will lead to less crunch during the game's final months. Still, the game's world remains large, with more interior locations than previous Grand Theft Auto games, impacting the timeline. To help avoid overtime, Rockstar has also added more producers to keep track of schedules, a move that's mostly been positive, developers said, but one that has also caused bottlenecks. Some employees said they found themselves waiting around to communicate through middlemen or that it felt like multiple people were in charge, leaving them unsure of who should make the final call. Rockstar put in place a new management structure following the departure of former design director Imran Sarwar, who was accused by several employees of bullying and verbal abuse. His position was filled by three other directors, creating what several people described as a “too many cooks” situation where design decisions are frequently left in flux or contradict one another. Some core aspects of the game, such as combat, were still going through changes even as developers expected them to be locked down, employees said. Sarwar didn't respond to a request for comment. Industry analysts anticipate that the next Grand Theft Auto will be out sometime in Take-Two's 2024 fiscal year, which runs from April 2023 through March 2024, but developers are skeptical. The game has been in development in some form since 2014. Although there are loose schedules in place, people interviewed for this article said they didn't know of any firm release date and that they expect the game to be at least two years away. Earlier this year, a group of designers quit Rockstar's Edinburgh office, telling colleagues they were sick of the lack of progress. Many others, however, say they're content to work at a company where there's little pressure to get a new game out the door. Grand Theft Auto V, which came out in 2013, is the most profitable entertainment property of all time thanks to its multiplayer component, Grand Theft Auto Online. That unprecedented financial success has given Rockstar leeway to make sweeping changes and to take its time on the next project. And, as one staff member pointed out, overhauling Rockstar's culture could help with retention and recruitment as well as lead to games that are “better for everyone working on them,” and presumably the people playing them, too.

Several new entries in the official Microsoft 365 roadmap have outlined how the company is working on improvements to the Office Dictation tool, which allows users to dictate documents, emails and more using their voice. It seems the service is set for a welcome upgrade, with an updated design, new visuals and improved functionalities due to arrive to make dictation a more integral part of your working life. Microsoft 365 voice dictation The upgraded Office Dictation tool will be appearing first in Word and Outlook, both of which get separate entries(opens in new tab) on the product roadmap(opens in new tab). "The Office dictation toolbar has been redesigned to showcase new visuals, responsive UI, and a smaller design to stay out of the way of what matters - your content!" the description for the new upgrade reads, without going into much exact detail. However, this should mean a service which is more intelligent and easier to use, hopefully allowing users a better way to dictate emails and Word documents or reminders when on the go. The update is listed as being "in development", but has a listed general availability date of July 2022, suggesting it should roll out soon. When it does launch, Microsoft says the feature will be available to Office users on Desktop, Web and Mac, across the world. The news is the latest step forward for improved dictation in Microsoft Office, which has been a major focus for the company for some time. Back in February 2021, Microsoft announced Word and Outlook would be getting major improvements, including a profanity filter and automatic punctuation(opens in new tab). This was followed later in the year by a major expansion of the platform to include a wider variety of languages on its Microsoft Dictate service(opens in new tab), and then in a separate announcement that allowed Outlook users to dictate email messages(opens in new tab) as well as calendar appointment and meeting content.

We know from previous information that the top Ryzen 7000 SKUs will feature a TDP of 170W whereas the AM5 socket can sustain a maximum PPT (Package Power) of up to 230W. This higher TDP design will only be utilized by the Ryzen 9 7000 SKUs such as the Ryzen 9 7950X and the Ryzen 9 7900X which are expected within the family and may rock 16 and 12 cores, respectively. The "normal voltage" mentioned by the leaker is interesting to note here since we are talking about the reference specifications. AMD's own Robert Hallock confirmed that the Ryzen 7000 SKUs will be featuring a TDP of up to 170W and a 230W PPT but it is possible that the CPUs will operate at a high voltage when running at their maximum clock potential which happens to be really close to the 6.0 GHz wall. Rumors have pointed out that the Ryzen 7000 Desktop SKUs will have a frequency limit of up to 5.85 GHz though it is likely that overclockers will be aiming for the 6 GHz mark. The Computex processor was a 16-core prototype sample not yet fused to specific power/TDP values, but it was operating in a range below the new 170W TDP group we've developed. Tesla said it recorded a $170 million (roughly Rs. 1,360 crore) impairment charge against the carrying value of its Bitcoin holdings for the first six months of the year, as well as gains of $64 million (roughly Rs. 512 crore) from certain sales of its Bitcoin holdings in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Monday. The phrase 'impairment charge' is a term used to account for an asset that is no longer as valuable as may have once been. When it purchased its Bitcoin last year, Tesla said it would examine its BTC holdings every quarter to check for impairments. According to an official Form 10-Q filing with the SEC, after selling 75 percent of its BTC stash for US Dollars in the second quarter, the company netted a realised gain of roughly $64 million (roughly Rs. 512 crore). Given that gains can only be recorded once appreciated digital assets have been sold, we do know that Tesla did ultimately make gains off its BTC purchase in 2021. Tesla sold $936 million (roughly Rs. 7,490 crore) worth of Bitcoin last week to bolster its cash position in the wake of the shutdown of its Shanghai factory as China deals with surging Covid-19 cases. Music Revenue Sharing is designed to make it easier for creators to monetize videos even when using licensed music, with Meta championing it as “the first of its kind within the music industry,” helping the site’s content creators “access more po[CENSORED]r music, deepening relationships with their fans.” The service, powered by Meta’s Rights Manager - a content-match tool that searches images, videos, and audio across Facebook and Instagram for original, copyrighted content - lets creators use their favorite tracks in videos and still earn money from them. How does Music Revenue Sharing on Facebook work? Before content creators can start monetizing videos using licensed music, they must first be eligible for Facebook’s in-stream ads and meet the platform’s monetization eligibility standards, community standards, and music guidelines. According to Meta, eligible videos must be 60 seconds or longer and uploaded to a Facebook page, contain a visual component (so, users can’t upload the song with a blank screen), and feature music samples that are covered by Music Revenue Sharing. Users can explore all songs covered by the deal in Facebook’s Licensed Music library. The Menlo Park-based business, meanwhile, assures users that it’ll continue working with music rights holders to expand the current list to help “bring creators and the music industry closer together, leading to more authentic connections with fans.” If a video meets the criteria set by Meta, content creators can expect 20% of the revenue share. The rest will go to Meta and music the rights holder. However, on those ungenerous terms, it’s possible content creators will prefer to use open-license or royalty-free music and keep the full 100%. Music Revenue Sharing is available globally today. However, initially, creators will only earn money on videos delivered to US audiences, with the service expanding worldwide over the next few months. This latest unveiling builds on Meta’s on-going drive to help creators make more money on its platforms. In 2020, it revealed plans to pay users for live streaming content. Last week, the company announced the introduction of NFTs on Instagram, expanding the Facebook Stars and Facebook Reels Play bonus programs.

Intel and Mediatek have announced that the two companies are entering a strategic partnership in which the Intel Foundry Services, or IFS, will begin creating and manufacturing chips for MediaTek. The association also adds to the current assistance that MediaTek is receiving from semiconductor manufacturer, TSMC. Intel Foundry Services, one of the most prominent chip designers in 2021, will assist in the manufacturing of chips for MediaTek's line of intelligent edge devices. Intel Foundry Services partners with the company MediaTek to assist in producing chips for intelligent edge devices The timing of the partnership is ideal in that Intel, along with the US semiconductor industry, is planning to receive increased subsidies from the government to assist with boosting chip fabrication in the United States. Intel is set to fabricate its 16nm chips for MediaTek, a redesign of the previous 22FFL node that was which is an older process moved to Legacy process but is great for low-power devices. Intel states that the partnership is anticipated to not only be a long-lasting one but also reach past just intelligent edge devices. TSMC produces most of the chips for MediaTek, but the company is looking to achieve a more significant supply chain. To do this, MediaTek will need to add chip production locations in the US and Europe, which IFS currently has available in both sectors. Currently, there's no word from Intel on the specific time when MediaTek's products will ship, but comments that the Intel 16nm will be the first revisions of the silicon seen to clients this year but will see higher volumes beginning in 2023. IFS was established in 2021 to help meet the surging global demand for advanced semiconductor manufacturing capacity. IFS is differentiated from other foundry offerings with a combination of leading-edge process and packaging technology, a world-class IP portfolio, and committed capacity in the United States and Europe. IFS customers will reap the benefits of Intel’s recently announced factory expansions at existing sites, as well as plans for major new investments in greenfield sites in Ohio and Germany. Currently, MediaTek manufactures over two billion devices each year, so it is unknown when MediaTek will switch the chips to the blue team's chip line. It is also unknown how much of the production of MediaTek's smart edge devices using Intel's chips will come from the US and Europe. Most processors available on the market are older and established legacy nodes and not newer technology we have reported over the last few years. However, readers will remember that Intel ensured that the roadmap the company created last year was to design five new nodes over the next four years. MediaTek plans to use Intel process technologies to manufacture multiple chips for a range of smart edge devices. IFS offers a broad manufacturing platform with technologies optimized for high performance, low power and always-on connectivity built on a roadmap that spans production-proven three-dimensional FinFET transistors to next-generation breakthroughs. “As one of the world’s leading fabless chip designers powering more than 2 billion devices a year, MediaTek is a terrific partner for IFS as we enter our next phase of growth,” said IFS President Randhir Thakur. “We have the right combination of advanced process technology and geographically diverse capacity to help MediaTek deliver the next billion connected devices across a range of applications.” With Intel choosing to invest $20 billion into the company's Intel Foundry Services, it appears that the company is on the right track to changing strategies following years of struggles. Not only is the blue team assisting MediaTek with this new partnership, but Intel Foundry Services has also partnered with Qualcomm and Amazon Web Services (AWS) and gained a contract with the US Department of Defense. NVIDIA, one of Intel's rivals, is also currently showing interest in the company's foundry services.
  16. After capturing the deepest and sharpest infrared picture of the distant universe, NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has inspired some captivating photos, formed using its data. A citizen scientist named Judy Schmidt processed the raw data obtained by JWST and transformed it into some of the most breathtaking pictures of two spiral galaxies. The galaxies, NGC 628 and NGC 7496, are both located near the Milky Way galaxy and are being studied as part of the Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby Galaxies (PHANGS). The NGC 628 spiral galaxy or the Phantom Galaxy, whose image was processed by Judy Schmidt, is located just 32 million light-years away and offers a good amount of details for study. It is considered a grand-design galaxy which has prominent, unobscured and well-formed arms. The galaxy becomes significant and astronomers have found at least three supernovae in NGC 628. The NGC 7496, meanwhile, is known as barred galaxy with its spiral arms extending from a distinct bar that tends to cross the centre of the galaxy. The formation is said to be due to the uneven density in the galactic disk. Region with high density pulls the star towards it and that results in bars. NGC 7496 is at a distance of 24 million light-years. The gas in such bars is channeled inwards which makes them a region for rich star formation. With its clear visibility, NGC 7496 offers scientists a great laboratory for studying the formation of stars. NASA's James Webb Space Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope both work in different lights and thus produce different images. While the Hubble telescope is an optical and ultraviolet instrument, the JWST operates in infrared light and has the capability to detect light behind gas and dust in optical wavelength. The observations of both the telescopes thus turn out be complimentary where Hubble captures the dust while JWST peers into it to look at the newborn stars.
  17. Google is changing its mind and reversing a recent decision to hide the app permissions list on product listings in its Play Store. The official Android Developers Twitter account tweeted(opens in new tab) the team heard the public outcry and is going to reinstate the permissions list. The tweet goes on to say “privacy and transparency are core values in the Android community” and so they want to uphold that. Users will be able to cross-reference what’s on the Data Safety section to Google’s permissions list and ensure app developers are being honest about the data they collect. The tweet also states the “app permissions section will be back shortly.” Looking through the Google Play Store, the app permissions list wasn’t back at the time of this writing. We reached out to Google to see if it could give a more concrete date or launch window. We’ll update this story if we hear back. Original outcry The original story was Google rolled out a new Play Store feature called Data Safety that required developers to disclose what data they were collecting and if it was being shared with third parties, among other things. It sounded great on paper until Google decided to remove the app permissions list. People could use the permissions list to fact-check the developers' claims and get a better understanding of what developers do with user information. But with the list gone, you couldn't verify developer assertions. Instead of creating a more transparent environment, Google made it murkier. The Data Safety section essentially runs on the honor system. Looking through Google’s Data Safety page on its support website(opens in new tab), Google states developers “are responsible for making complete and accurate declarations in [their] app’s store listing on Google Play.” It adds that while Google reviews apps, it “cannot make determinations on behalf of the developers of how they handle user data.” Basically, it won’t tell the developers what to do. The problem with an honor system is that developers are under no obligation to be honest with customers. Why be honest if they don't have to? Developers could have potentially harvested all the sensitive data they wanted and users would have been none the wiser. The permission list's reinstatement should ease some concerns. People are better informed, Google looks good, and apps are more trusted. Analysis: Understandable fear The negative reaction from the community isn’t unwarranted. Data collecting is a consequence of living in a tech-saturated world. Collecting this information is important for developers to make their apps better, but many users are understandably fearful of losing control of their data. 2022 has had its fair share of big data breaches from the attack on Microsoft back in March or the Cash App breach(opens in new tab) in April. Google has called for increasing security across the tech industry, but occasionally its actions are at cross-purposes with these privacy and security aspirations. And sometimes, in an effort to simplify its systems, it loses sight of the larger goals. It's nice to see, however, how quickly it can course-correct.   18. The AMD Radeon Vulkan driver or RADV placed within the Mesa Project's upcoming 22.2 build has received further mesh shader support, reports Phoronix. The support, which is based on an experimental NVIDIA NV_mesh_shader extension and is in the process of preparations that will allow the shader to offer the same capabilities as D3D12 abilities, will also provide cross-vendor support within the extension. AMD RADV is close to finalization to prepare for support of the Vulkan Mesh Shader as the Mesa update window will be closing soon This open-source Radeon Vulkan driver within Mesa has been working on mesh shader support; currently, the experimental and prior Vulkan extension for mesh shading is very close to the same properties of DirectX 12, which will be helpful for compatibility with VKD3D-Proton. Timur Kristóf, one of the Valve open-source engineers, has been crucial in moving the RADV task and mesh shader commands closer to finalization. AMD's Radeon Vulkan graphics driver, or RADV, was designed by community engineers from Google, Red Hat, and other contributors working within the Linux platform. The driver is the first choice for AMD graphics card users that also use the Linux open-source operating system. Companies such as AMD, along with Intel, NVIDIA, Valve, and others allow for Linux support to be officially supported and allow for the numerous improvements and updates that affect the computer's performance, support for various graphical enhancements, and more. The most recent merge has draws for the task+mesh shader prepared, which Larabel reports will add to the already merged task shader code. Also noted by the experienced Linux writer is that the merge request mentions complications within the hardware implementation not lining up to the currently available API. He continues to note that it only affects the NV_mesh_shader and is anticipated not to affect the Vulkan mesh shader's extension. The recent RADV merge request in Mesa 22.2 will show task shader support by utilizing the NV_mesh_shader. The extension remains undisclosed in typical situations unless the user uses the RADV_PERFTEST=nv_ms environment variable. The Mesa 22.2 feature work window will close soon as the updated complete release will launch sometime in August. AMD also recently began support for NVIDIA's DGC's in its latest RADV driver.

But, unlike the Xiaomi Mi Band 7 Pro, the Amazfit Band 7 does not offer in-built GPS support. The newly launched wearable comes with a 1.47-inch HD AMOLED display, 24/7 heart rate and blood-oxygen monitor, in-built Amazon Alexa and more. The wearable is claimed to deliver up to 18 days of battery life with typical usage and up to 28 days with battery saver mode. Amazfit Band 7 price, availability The Amazfit Band 7 price has been set at $49.99 (roughly Rs. 3,650) and can be purchased from Amazfit official website. However, currently, it isn't available to purchase in India. Moreover, there isn't any information about the Indian launch of the wearable yet. Although, buyers will get an option to purchase the wearable from Amazfit in Beige and Black colour variants along with an offering of additional strap colours options in Blue, Green, Orange and Pink. Amazfit Band 7 specifications, features The Amazfit Band 7 sports a 1.47-inch HD AMOLED display with a resolution of 198 x 368 pixels and a pixel density of 282 PPI. The wearable comes with Zepp OS. As expected, it comes with 18 days of battery life with typical use. Also, it can run up to 28 days of battery life with enabled battery saver mode. The wearable is claimed to features more than 50 watch faces along with 8 editable watch faces. Additionally, it comes with 120 sports modes. These features also send an alert to user when the health data drops abnormally low or jumps high. The Amazfit Band 7 can also be paired with both Android and iOS devices via Bluetooth.   20. An upcoming Microsoft Edge update could give users a whole new way to interact with the browser using custom commands. As spotted by ghacks.net(opens in new tab), Microsoft Edge Canary 105 will see a feature that enables the command bar to run commands from a launcher integrated into the browser. However unlike rivals such as Chrome and Firefox, the new command bar is not located in the browser address bar, but as a standalone option, hopefully allowing for much smoother functionality. Microsoft Edge command bar The new command bar is opened by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Space, and sits just below the Microsoft Edge address bar. Although given the official name DevTools Command Palette, ghacks.net found that a wide range of commands could be used in the bar, including creating a new window or tab, opening office web apps, and even opening other apps such as Stack Overflow. Users already signed up to Microsoft Edge Canary are able to try out the new feature now by updating to the latest build. The tool is still in development, so there's no news as yet on a potential release date, but if it gets enough engagement in the testing phase, there's no reason why it shouldn't become a part of Microsoft Edge in the future. The new feature is the latest addition to Edge as Microsoft looks to ensure its browser is capable of competing on level-footing with the market leaders, Chrome and Safari. Recently, the company revealed it was also working on an upgrade which would allow Edge users to access their favourite or most-used tools alongside the browser itself. Initially, the likes of Discover, Bing search, Outlook, Office, Games, and other items such as a unit converter and internet speed test will be among those included for users to try out. Another recently-announced feature will allow users to pause all Microsoft Edge extensions from running on specific websites with a single click, giving them greater control over extensions running on risky or sensitive websites.
  21. Samsung created a new computational SSD with the help of AMD which aims to be critical for efficient HPC settings. Samsung introduces AMD-Powered Computational SSD With Xilinx FPGA to help improve data throughput between the SSD & CPU Utilizing AMD's Versal FPGA that they received from the acquisition of Xilinx, Samsung ensures clients that they will receive half the amount of computational times and significantly lower power consumption (by close to 70%). Also, the new CSD will offer less utilization of the system's processor — by ninety-seven percent compared to the identical amount of standard SSDs consistently accessing data. Samsung's new second-generation computational SSD can process data without needing other devices. The new device allows data transmission between several elements involved in the computed pathways. A benefit of processing data on the SSD is that users will not need to transfer information between several storage devices. The new computational SSD allows bandwidth to make streams faster, lowering data latency since fewer unnecessary packages travel between the storage device and the processor. And in turn, the processor is allowed to focus on more tasks, especially those that are more critical to the system. Tasks previously used would tax the processing between memory and CPU, having a system such as this where it offers that data to section itself in the storage device to process a significant amount of wor. At the same time,e the processor is focused on other tasks, the new CSD (computational storage drive) will also be able to aid in dissipating heat properly through the system. The new CSD from Samsung is a second-gen Smart SSD offering Arm cores capable of minimal power and lower temps within the supercomputer's environment. The company reports that the CSD will be perfect for the AI/ML inferencing markets, as well as "Business Intelligence analysis, big data analytics, video transcoding, financial services, genomics, search queries, and transparent compression." Commercialization of the first-generation SmartSSD, in collaboration with AMD, established that the computational storage market has great potential.
