  1. Leeds United are close to signing Colombia winger Luis Sinisterra from Dutch club Feyenoord. The 23-year-old is expected to sign a five-year deal at Elland Road in a deal reportedly worth £21m. Sinisterra scored 23 goals and registered 14 assists in 49 appearances for Feyenoord last season. He helped the club reach the Europa Conference League final, with the Eredivisie side missing out on winning the trophy after a defeat by Roma. All of the summer transfer window done deals However, Sinisterra was named Uefa Europa Conference League Young Player of the Season, having scored six times and registering four assists in the inaugural season of the competition. He is seen by many as a replacement for Raphinha, who is holding out for a move to Barcelona while Chelsea and Arsenal are also keen on the Brazil winger. Leeds have already signed Brenden Aaronson, Rasmus Kristensen, Marc Roca, Darko Gyabi and Tyler Adams this summer.
  2. A man accused of opening fire on a Fourth of July parade near Chicago contemplated a second attack after the deadly shooting, authorities say. According to police, the 21-year-old suspect drove for more than two hours to Wisconsin after the shooting, which left seven dead and dozens wounded. He saw another Independence Day celebration there and allegedly considered attacking it, police said. During a court hearing, prosecutors also said he confessed to the shooting. At Wednesday's court appearance, a judge ruled that the suspect, Robert Crimo, would be held without bail and assigned a public lawyer. At a news conference following the hearing, police said investigators had determined that Mr Crimo attempted to dump his phone in Madison, Wisconsin after the Monday morning attack in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park. Police said the gunman told them he had disguised himself as a woman so he could escape Highland Park alongside fleeing residents. In the brief hearing, Assistant State Attorney Ben Dillon said surveillance video showed the suspect leaving the area and dumping a rifle. He then took his mother's car and drove about 150 miles (240 km) north-west to Madison. How a Fourth of July parade turned into a massacre Parents of two-year-old among shooting victims America's gun culture - in seven charts Madison's police chief said in a news conference that the FBI called around 17:00 local time (22:00 GMT) on Monday to request that the force mobilise its SWAT team due to the suspect being in their area. But before the tactical team was ready, the police learned that the suspect had been caught. According to Mr Dillon, the gunman then confessed after being caught, telling police he "looked down his sights, aimed, then opened fire at people across the street". If convicted, the seven murder counts the suspected gunman currently faces would carry a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole. Dozens more charges are expected before the investigation ends. Prosecutors said on Wednesday that 83 spent shell casings, as well as rifle magazines, were recovered from the scene of the shooting. The new information comes as questions are being raised over how the suspect was able to buy guns. He passed background checks meant to prevent potentially dangerous individuals from buying weapons, even though he had previously made threats that were reported to authorities. IMAGE SOURCE,GETTY IMAGES Image caption, The accused gunman appeared in court on Wednesday Three other firearms were also found at his home. Police said the suspect had two prior contacts with law enforcement but was still able to purchase five guns in the past year. In April 2019, police were called to the suspect's home one week after he reportedly attempted to take his own life. And in September 2019, police were called by a family member who said he had made violent threats to "kill everyone". Police responded and seized 16 knives, a dagger and a sword from his home. He was not arrested and no further action was taken. In a separate and more recent incident, Mr Crimo reportedly behaved suspiciously during an April visit to a local synagogue during Passover. A volunteer security co-ordinator told The Forward, a Jewish news organisation, that he believed the suspect was "sizing up" the facility, although he left without incident. Illinois state police said that the suspect's father sponsored his application for a firearms licence in December 2019 when he was just 19. His uncle denied this in a statement to the Chicago Sun. Illinois is one of 19 US states with so-called red flag laws, designed to keep guns out of the hands of people who may pose a danger to themselves or others. Some commentators have pointed to the Highland Park shooting as evidence that similar regulations are ineffective. Allison Anderman, an attorney at the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, said that "implementation seems to have been an issue" in his case. The Illinois law came into effect in January 2019, just months before police first encountered the gunman. Ms Anderman added that red flag laws do not require individuals to be taken into custody. Instead, they simply prevent them from having guns until they "get their crisis under control". "It's very possible that law enforcement officers did not know about it or did not know how to properly use it," she said. "A single instance where a law was not properly implemented does not call into question the effectiveness of these laws". Experts believe that data suggests that red flag laws are at least somewhat effective. In Florida, for example, data shows that judges have acted more than 8,000 times under that state's version of the law to restrict gun access. "These are people who were either troubled or emotionally dysregulated. or expressing homicidal threats, that had guns taken away," said Dexter Voisin, a social sciences professor and gun violence expert at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio. "It's not that the laws don't work. It's that folks actually have to work with the system". https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-62068500

  4. Microsoft engineers are busy developing Outlook Lite, a new Android app designed for cheaper, lower-spec smartphones and tablets. Information on the upcoming release is limited, but it's described in a new roadmap entry(opens in new tab) as follows: “An Android app that brings the main benefits of Outlook in a smaller app size with fast performance for low-end devices on any network.” According to the roadmap, the new email app will be made available to all Android users by the end of the month. Outlook Lite for Android The Lite version of Microsoft’s Outlook email client for Android devices will focus on optimizing performance, which should improve the experience for lower-end and cheaper devices. Android Central(opens in new tab) reports the primary difference to be that Outlook Lite “only allows you to create a single account type,” which should not be an issue for most low-end Android users. According to the same article, it appears that some design changes have also made their way over to the simplified version of the mail app, including a redesigned navigation bar at the bottom of the user interface, which is set to replace the “Search” button with a “Contacts” button. For several other low-performance apps that are already available - like Facebook Lite and Google Go - some features are removed for the best experience on these low-end devices. Outlook Lite seems to do most of its work on the back end, also promising to reduce the amount of storage space that it needs in order to be installed. TechRadar Pro has asked Microsoft whether iOS users can expect a similar Outlook re-work in future.
  5. AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics card based on the RDNA 3 "Navi 31" GPU is going to be the next-gen flagship for the red team, ushering in performance levels never before seen in the PC gaming segment, and here's everything from specs, price, and performance that you need to know. AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT RDNA 3 Graphics Card: The Next-Gen Navi 31 Flagship Infused With Chiplet Architecture [Updated- 05/07/22] The AMD Radeon RX 6000 RDNA 2 graphics cards proved that the red team can offer performance on par and even exceed that of the competing GeForce RTX lineup. Each segment saw a massive increase in performance but the Navi 21 series was where the real action was, with performance higher than the RTX 3090 Ti graphics card across the board. AMD not just delivered a brand new GPU package to its gaming audience but a package that was uplifted with a wide variety of architectural and software innovations such as Infinity Cache tech, FSR, and Smart Access Memory. All of these features combined to give Radeon users a fluid and smooth gaming experience while enjoying all the benefits that modern-day games have to offer such as Ray Tracing, DirectX 12 Ultimate, and visual upscalers technologies. We should expect similar things with the next-generation flagship too but an important factor to consider is that GPUs are becoming more power-hungry and more pricey. It is a trend that might continue into the future as we get better products but in return, there's always a cost to pay for end consumers. So starting with what we know so far, first we should take a look at the brand new RDNA 3 GPU core that is expected to debut on the next-gen Radeon RX 7000 series graphics card lineup. AMD Navi 31 'Plum Bonito' GPU - The Next-Gen RDNA 3 Powerhouse At the top of the RDNA 3 SKU lineup is the Navi 31 GPU. Although there's an even faster chip in the works that is expected to debut next year, the 2022 flagship is said to be based on the Navi 31 GPU. The AMD RDNA 3 GPUs will be part of the 'GFX11' family and the flagship Navi 31 GPU is internally codenamed 'Plum Bonito' whereas the RDNA 2 flagship, the Navi 21 GPU was internally known as 'Sienna Cichlid'. AMD has become quite fond of using fish names as its internal codenames for the gaming GPU lineup and that's expected to continue with the RDNA 3 lineup. AMD confirmed that its RDNA 3 GPUs will be coming later this year with a huge performance uplift. The company's Senior Vice President of Engineering, Radeon Technologies Group, David Wang, said that the next-gen GPUs for Radeon RX 7000 series will offer over 50% performance per watt uplift vs the existing RDNA 2 GPUs. Some of the key features of the RDNA 3 GPUs highlighted by AMD will include: In the information published by AMD, the company highlighted a few key features of its RDNA 3 GPUs that will power the next generation of Radeon RX graphics cards. The RDNA 3 GPU will be based on a 5nm process node and utilize an advanced chiplet packaging that delivers increased performance per watt. Furthermore, the GPU will house a range of new technologies such as a brand new and rearchitected Compute Unit, an optimized graphics pipeline, and the next-gen of Infinity Cache. AAMD will be rearchitecting the compute units within RDNA 3 to deliver enhanced raytracing capabilities. Although there's no mention of what these capabilities are if we were to guess, we would say it's definitely talking about performance and a set of advanced features on the RDNA 3 GPU core for Radeon RX 7000 graphics cards. AMD's RDNA 2 GPU-powered Radeon RX 6000 series were the first to feature raytracing capabilities on the red camp. They were a generation behind NVIDIA who introduced their first raytracing GPUs two years prior on the Turing graphics architecture and fine-tuned it further to deliver better performance in the second generation on Ampere. With RDNA 3 GPU-powered Radeon RX 7000 pitted for launch later this year, we can expect AMD to offer a similar jump in performance or even exceed Ampere's ray-tracing capabilities. But the real challenge ahead would be to rival NVIDIA's 3rd Gen RT (Raytracing) cores which are expected to debut on the Ada Lovelace-powered GeForce RTX 40 series. Besides raytracing, AMD will also be adding an Optimized Graphics Pipeline for RDNA 3 GPUs will allow for even higher clock speeds than RDNA 2 GPUs. The AMD Radeon RX 6000 cards already run close to 3 GHz so, with an improved 5nm process node, we can expect AMD to breach past the 3 GHz clock limit. This is essential for AMD as their competitor isn't holding back either with RTX 40 series rumors also hinting at up to 3 GHz clock speeds utilizing the more efficient 4N (optimized 5nm process node). In addition to these, AMD will also be leveraging advanced GPU capabilities of its RDNA 3 graphics architecture to deliver a richer software ecosystem such as support for AV1 and brand new WMMA Instructions which will allow AI-Learning through the assistance of dedicated hardware blocks. The company is expected to debut its next-gen FSR 3.0 technology with RDNA 3 GPUs which will tackle NVIDIA's AI-Assisted DLSS feature suite. The GPUs will also be amongst the first to utilize the brand new PCIe Gen 5.0 protocol, allowing for up to 128 GB/s transfer rates. This will be a crucial step in enhancing the Smart Access Memory feature and also drive the way forward for SAS (Smart Access Storage) which is a brand new feature designed in compliance with Microsoft's Direct Storage API to deliver faster loading times and better texture streaming in game. Display capabilities such as DP2.0 and HDMI 2.1 will also be present on the new graphics cards.
  6. Chinese manufacturer BYD posted a 314.9% year-on-year increase in electrified vehicle sales in June in its mission to surpass Tesla. The company – which is based in Shenzhen and backed by American billionaire magnate Warren Buffet – sold 641,000 hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric cars worldwide from January to June, 134,036 of those in June. Tesla sold 564,000 electric cars in the same period. BYD sold 600,000 electrified vehicles in 2021 and is chasing an ambitious self-imposed target of 1.5 million for this year. Its American rival, meanwhile, has suffered setbacks as a result of shipping issues, battery shortages and Covid-related shutdowns in China. Earlier this month, Tesla boss Elon Musk described its new factories as “gigantic money furnaces” that were “losing billions of dollars”. This is just the latest landmark for BYD, which last month surpassed Volkswagen to become the world’s third-largest car maker based on market capitalisation. Its market capitalisation was rated at $128.8 billion (£106bn), compared with the German company at $117.5bn (£96.9bn). BYD stopped production of all pure-ICE models permanently back in April, with the final model leaving production in March. Its focus now is EVs, with plans for both electric cars and trucks, plus it has plands to expand its PHEV production. It also has a vested interest in electric buses. BYD has plans to supply batteries to EV makers like Tesla, too, already holding an 11.1% share of the global EV battery market from January to March this year. It recently overtook LG to become the world’s second-largest EV battery manufacturer, the Financial Times has reported, putting it behind only CATL, which is also Chinese.
  7. The Premier League has asked clubs to vote on whether to bring in a voluntary ban on gambling sponsorship on shirts before potential government action. Half of last season's 20 top-flight teams had betting sponsors on their shirts, with the government hoping to decide on a ban before 21 July. The Premier League is supportive of a voluntary move where gambling sponsors are phased out within three years. But 14 of its 20 clubs would need to vote in favour for it to be approved. An email was sent to clubs on Monday, with a decision expected within the next week. Last week, government sources said a final decision was yet to be made and that a ban on shirt sponsorship was still on the table. But it is understood that a voluntary ban has been discussed and could offer a middle ground for clubs and avert any legislation on a much-debated topic. Everton and promoted side Bournemouth have both recently signed new shirt deals with betting firms, while Crystal Palace have dropped theirs in favour of a car retailer. A voluntary move is likely to disappoint campaigners, who have been urging government to act and impose a ban which would also include league and social media sponsorship, plus pitch-perimeter advertising. A University of Glasgow study claimed that more than 700 betting-related logos can be seen during the course of a match. The Premier League declined to comment. Its clubs are likely to be less affected by a ban, because they can draw on other types of sponsorships. But the English Football League, sponsored by Sky Bet, has said it would cost their clubs £40m a year. It is not believed that a ban would affect EFL clubs, but choosing only top-flights clubs has been described as "incoherent" by campaigners and has been a point of contention for the Premier League. A spokesperson for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport said: "We are undertaking the most comprehensive review of gambling laws in 15 years to make sure they are fit for the digital age. "We will publish a white paper which sets out our vision for the sector in the coming weeks."
  8. US police have arrested a suspect after six people were killed in a mass shooting at an Independence Day parade in Highland Park, Illinois. Robert E Crimo III, 22, was detained after a brief chase, police said. The gunman climbed on to a roof, shooting randomly at spectators using a high-powered rifle. It is the latest mass shooting to hit the US - there has been one in every week of 2022. President Joe Biden said he was "shocked" by the violence. Hours later, two police officers were wounded in a shooting in Philadelphia during a Fourth of July fireworks display. Mr Crimo was detained after a manhunt. He was referred to as a "person of interest" in Monday's shooting, but after his arrest police said they believed he was responsible. The gunman opened fire at the parade, near the city of Chicago, at around 10:15 local time (15:15 GMT), just a few minutes after it began. The event was scheduled to include floats, marching bands, and community entertainment as part of the city's Independence Day celebrations. But what should have been one of the happiest days of the year quickly turned to panic, with pushchairs, purses and lawn chairs left discarded on the street as crowds fled from the scene. Some witnesses said they thought the sound of gunfire was fireworks. The gunman fired at members of the public from the rooftop of a nearby shop, where police recovered "evidence of a firearm." Five adults were killed at the scene, as well as a further victim who the local coroner said died in a nearby hospital. At least two dozen others were injured. One of those who died has been named as Nicolas Toledo, a man in his late 70s, who was only there because he requires full-time care and his family did not want to miss the event. "What was supposed to be a fun family day turned into a horrific nightmare for us all," his granddaughter Xochil Toledo wrote on GoFundMe. "As a family we are broken, and numb. Our condolences go out to all the other families who lost a love one today." Another victim of the shooting has been named as Jacki Sundheim, who was described by her local synagogue as a "beloved" member who taught and worshipped there. "There are no words sufficient to express the depth of our grief for Jacki's death and sympathy for her family and loved ones," a statement by North Shore Congregation Israel synagogue said. Recollecting the events of the day, Anand P, who was at the parade said: "We went to have a nice family day out - and then suddenly all this gunfire happens. "At the time I personally wanted to believe it was a car backfiring. Then people started running - so we start running." The suspect has been named as Robert E Crimo III Another witness, Noel Hara, described how he was having breakfast at Starbucks after dropping off his son at the parade, when the chaos unfolded. "About 30 people suddenly came rushing in screaming and we were locked into the Starbucks bathroom," Mr Hara told the BBC. "Moments later, they evacuated us from the Starbucks because they thought the shooter was trying to get in the back door." No charges have been filed against Mr Crimo and there is no indication of any motive. Social media firms suspended accounts apparently belonging to Mr Crimo, who posted rap videos under an alias as well as videos depicting shootings, gun violence and other violent themes. He also posted pictures of himself draped in a Donald Trump flag and a video of him greeting Mr Trump's motorcade at an airport. The attack in Highland Park comes just a month after deadly shootings in Uvalde, Texas and Buffalo, New York. Illinois Governor Jay Robert Pritzker warned that mass shootings were becoming an "American tradition". "There are going to be people who are going to say that today is not the day, that now is not the time to talk about guns. I'm telling you there is no better day and no better time then right here and right now," the Democratic governor said. President Biden vowed to keep fighting "the epidemic of gun violence" in the country. "I'm not going to give up," he said, speaking outside the White House in Washington DC. Last week, the president signed the first significant federal bill on gun safety in nearly 30 years. It imposes tougher checks on young buyers and encourages states to remove guns from people considered a threat - but critics say the measures don't go far enough. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-62045932

  10. Twitter Blue subscribers can now modify the navigation bar in the app on Android devices. The feature, which was previously exclusive to iOS, allows you to remove the Spaces icon from the centre of your navigation bar (and of course, remove some of the other tabs if you want, too). According to The Verge, if you're sick of having to extend your finger over the Spaces tab to access your DMs and alerts, custom navigation lets you display as few as two tabs at a time or maintain all five that are displayed by default. The Spaces tab was first tested by Twitter on iOS last year and appeared on Android in May, which seems to encourage more irritated users to subscribe to the $2.99/month (roughly Rs. 200) Blue plan introduced last year. However, Blue can't shield us from all of the features that are clogging up the app. Last week, Twitter announced that it was adding more information to the banner that displays active Spaces at the top of your timeline, as reported by The Verge. While there is currently no option to completely disable this banner (neither for free users nor Blue subscribers), it will now display information about the Space's host, everyone who tweets in the Space, and pertinent Topics. Last month, Twitter announced that users would be able to use the closed caption toggle on Android and iOS. The option to toggle captions for its video player now shows up — with the text “CC” — in the top-right corner of the video — if it has captions available.
  11. WhatsApp continues to iterate on its updates, with the ability to react to messages expanding, letting you use any emoji thanks to a new ‘plus’ icon. Reacting to emojis in WhatsApp has saved many users from replying to messages with, words. A simple crying or thumbs-up emoji can more easily cut the awkwardness in a conversation. It’s something that’s appeared in other messaging apps, such as Instagram and Facebook Messenger, but WhatsApp will finally let you express how you really want to react to a friend or family member. Analysis: lets see gifs and other react options Meta is constantly expanding on WhatsApp's features - from better voice notes to being able to leave a group quietly without any drama. However, it can go further for reactions. Other apps such as iMessage and WeChat lets you use stickers as reacts instead of emojis, but WhatsApp can go one step further with GIFS. There are plenty of sites these days where you can make your own GIFS - Frinkiac(opens in new tab) springs to mind that lets you use a classic Simpsons reference as a reply. But let’s see the ability to use these as reacts as well. WhatsApp is currently in a battle in the messaging space with Apple, Telegram, WeChat and its own parent company’s apps such as Facebook and Instagram. But if it keeps up with these new features, there’s less chance of its users moving on to these other apps in the near future.
  12. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090, RTX 4080, RTX 4070 Graphics Card Detailed Once Again, Flagship To Feature An Insanely High Clock Speed of Over 2.75 GHz at 450W TGP The latest tweet by the leaker seems to stick with the previous specifications for all three graphics cards, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090, RTX 4080, and the RTX 4070. The leaker does provide some new information too in the form of clock speeds for the flagship GeForce RTX 4090 which will be some of the highest clocked chips we have ever seen from the green camp. Furthermore, it looks like the memory configurations are provided too and it looks like anyone hoping for GDDR6X on cards below the RTX 4080 may be in for a disappointment. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 'Rumored' Specifications The NVIDIA GeForce RTX RTX 4090 graphics card is expected to be powered by the top AD102-300 GPU but it is only the 'Ti' variant that will feature the full chip. The GeForce RTX 4090 will utilize a slightly cut-down configuration. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 will use 128 SMs of the 144 SMs for a total of 16,384 CUDA cores. The GPU will come packed with 96 MB of L2 cache and a total of 384 ROPs which is simply insane. The graphics card is expected to feature the latest TSMC 4N process node which is an optimized version of the 5nm process node and will rock some impressive clock speeds. The leaker mentions the base clock at 2235 MHz, boost clock at 2520 MHz, and the actual max boost clocks to be over 2.75 GHz which might be a confirmation of the 2.8 GHz+ clock speeds. It looks like custom models might be pushing this over the 2.9 GHz range too As for memory specs, the GeForce RTX 4090 is expected to rock 24 GB GDDR6X capacities that will be clocked at 21 Gbps speeds across a 384-bit bus interface. This will provide up to 1 TB/s of bandwidth. This is the same bandwidth as the existing RTX 3090 Ti graphics card and as far as the power consumption is concerned, the TBP is said to be rated at 450W which means that TGP may end up lower than that. The card will be powered by a single 16-pin connector which delivers up to 600W of power. It is likely that we may get 500W+ custom designs as we saw with the RTX 3090 Ti. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 'Rumored' Specifications The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 is going to be a cut-down AD103-300 GPU configuration with 10,240 cores or 80 SMs enabled of the total 84 units. The GPU will come packed with 64 MB of L2 cache and up to 224 ROPs. As for memory specs, the GeForce RTX 4080 is expected to rock 16 GB GDDR6X capacities that are said to be adjusted at 21 Gbps speeds across a 256-bit bus interface. This will provide up to 672 GB/s of bandwidth. For power, the TBP is said to be rated at around 420W which is close to the RTX 4090 and since the memory clocks aren't that aggressive, it is likely that the core clocks could be tuned for maximum graphics performance. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 'Expected' Specifications Lastly, we have the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 which is expected to be a cut-down configuration of the AD104-275 GPU with a slightly higher core count than the RTX 3070 TI (6144 cores) of 7168 cores or 56 SMs. The GPU will come packed with 48 MB of L2 cache and up to 160 ROPs. As for memory specs, the GeForce RTX 4070 is expected to rock 10 GB GDDR6 capacities that are said to be clocked at 18 Gbps speeds across a 160-bit bus interface. The card may rock a TBP of 300W and the leaker also mentions that the pricing of this card would not be lower than the RTX 3070 or 3070 Ti graphics cards. Simply put, we can expect a price bump in the '70' class graphics segment.
  13. The MG 4 electric hatchback will arrive in the UK in September, rivalling the Volkswagen ID 3 and Kia Niro EV with up to 281 miles of range, a spacious interior and optimised dynamics. First revealed in China, where it's known as the MG Mulan, the latest in a growing range of MG EVs is the first to be based on parent company SAIC's new Modular Scalable Platform (MSP), which officials say will play a pivotal role in the brand's future plans. he modular platform, which MG says supports wheelbases ranging from 2650mm to 3100mm and batteries ranging from 40kWh to 150kWh, has been conceived around a newly developed One Pack battery construction process. It uses horizontally stacked cells to provide a floor height of just 110mm, with the battery forming an integral part of the platform structure. Originally exposed in a series of Chinese patent images earlier this year, the styling of the 4 represents a departure from other recent MGs, with crisper lines, sheer surfaces and detailing inspired by that first aired on the Cyberster roadster concept that was unveiled in 2021. Key elements include a low front end featuring a large MG badge, angular headlights with distinctive “eyebrow” graphics and a heavily structured front bumper with additional lights integrated within the outer edges. A pair of prominent swage lines are incorporated within the sides, while the lower section of the doors form part of an extended sill. At the rear, the five-door hatchback receives a large two-part roof-extension-cum-spoiler above an angled tailgate, together with a complex full-width tail-light assembly featuring LED graphics. Among the options is a full-length glass roof. At 4287mm long (with a 2705mm wheelbase), 1836mm wide and 1506mm tall, the 4 is 25mm longer, 27mm wider but a good 46mm lower than the Volkswagen ID 3 – just one of a number of electric hatchback rivals that it will face. MG has confirmed the 4 will be sold with the choice of 167bhp and 201bhp single-motor rear-wheel-drive powertrains from launch, while a 443bhp dual-motor four-wheel-drive range-topper is set to follow. The performance version is claimed to provide a 0-62mph time of 3.8sec. Top speed is limited to 99mph. The 167bhp car receives a 51kWh battery, the 201bhp and 443bhp cars a 64kWh battery. Official WLTP range is put at between 218 and 281 miles. MG is yet to confirm the chemistry of the batteries, but other models from the Chinese brand offer either lithium ion phosphate (LFP) or lithium nickel manganese cobalt (LNMC) cells. MG has confirmed the One Pack battery will initially use a 400V architecture but says it can be upgraded to 800V for faster charging in the future. SAIC deputy chief engineer Zhu Jun talked up the dynamic properties of the 4, suggesting the new platform and integrated battery provide it with a 50:50 weight distribution “for optimum driving pleasure”.
  14. Manchester City have signed Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips for £45m. The 26-year-old England international has signed a six-year deal with the Premier League champions. He becomes Pep Guardiola's third summer signing after the arrivals of Erling Haaland and Stefan Ortega Moreno. "I am absolutely delighted to have joined Manchester City. City have again proved to be the best team in the country," Phillips said. Phillips, who made 235 appearances over eight seasons at Elland Road, still had two years left on his Leeds deal. He said City have "an amazing squad and a manager in Pep Guardiola who is rightly considered to be the finest in the world". He added: "To be able to play under Pep and learn from him and his coaching staff as well as be part of such a fantastic squad is a prospect that I am incredibly excited about." Phillips made his international debut in September 2020 and was named England men's Player of the Year for 2020-21, having played every game at the delayed Euro 2020 tournament. A key player under former boss Marcelo Bielsa, Phillips played 37 times in the Championship during the 2019-20 season when Leeds were promoted to the Premier League after 16 years away. He spent a lengthy period on the sidelines last season due to a hamstring injury, making just 20 league appearances. City's director of football Txiki Begiristain added: "His reading of the game, alongside his passing ability, energy and drive make him a formidable talent and he is a player who has a fantastic will to win. "We feel he will be a superb addition to our squad and that he will complement our game perfectly." bbc.com/sport
  15. At least six people have been killed after being caught in an avalanche sparked by the collapse of a glacier in the northern Italian Alps. Emergency officials said nine others were injured in the collapse, with two people suffering serious injuries. Rescue teams using helicopters and drones have been working through the night searching for 19 still missing. Video of the incident showed an ice mass collapsing down the slopes of Marmolada, the area's highest mountain. "An avalanche of snow, ice and rock which in its path hit the access road when there were several roped parties, some of which were swept away," emergency services spokeswoman Michela Canova said. "The definitive number of mountaineers involved is not yet known," she added. The injured hikers, including one person left in critical condition, were taken to several hospitals around the area, rescue officials said. It isn't immediately clear what caused the section of the glacier, called a serac, to collapse. But Walter Milan, a rescue service spokesperson, told state TV the area has been experiencing unusually high temperatures in recent days. "The heat is unusual,'' Mr Milan said, noting temperatures have reached 10C at the glacier's peak in recent days. "That's extreme heat," he said. "Clearly it's something abnormal." Reinhold Messner, an Italian mountaineer, told La Repubblica newspaper the glacier has been receding for several years due to the impact of global warming. "There is hardly any ice left," Mr Messner said. He noted glaciers occasionally collapse "due to gravity," but said the reason for the glacier's retreat "is the global heat, which causes glaciers to melt". We don't yet know what caused the catastrophic collapse of the Marmolada glacier, but it seems almost certain that climate change will have played a role. The climate of the Alps is changing rapidly. Temperatures are reckoned to have increased by around 2C - twice the global average. That's driving the retreat of the glaciers of the Alps. They are estimated to have lost half their ice volume since 1850 and loss rates have accelerated strongly since the late 1980s. As glaciers recede, they can become unstable and threaten the people below them, particularly high elevation glaciers like the Marmolada which are often on steep slopes and rely on sub-zero temperatures to keep them locked in place. As a result, catastrophic glacier collapses are becoming more frequent, says Paul Christoffersen, a professor of glaciology at the University of Cambridge. The shifting ice of the high Alps shows once again how climate change is altering our landscape and hazards in ways scientists are still trying to understand. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-62029780.amp

  17. Nothing Phone 1 is all set to launch globally on July 12. Just days before the formal debut, a purported official TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) case for the smartphone has been leaked online suggesting the design. The case comes in a black shade with a semitransparent design and it has cut-outs for the speaker and cameras. Additionally, the pre-order pass for Nothing Phone 1 is currently available on Flipkart for everyone without an invite code. The company was earlier providing an invitation code for select customers for availing pre-order passes. Tipster Ishan Agarwal, in collaboration with MySmartPrice, has posted a render of the alleged official TPU case of Nothing Phone 1. It has a semitransparent design and cut-outs for the power button on the spines and at the bottom for the speaker, USB Type-C port, and mics. There is a cut-out at the rear to show off the camera unit. The case also shows a Nothing branding on the back. Nothing is rumoured to bundle the case with the phone. Building up hype around the launch of Nothing Phone 1, the UK-based company started an invite-only programme to allow a limited number of early customers as well as members of its private community to buy a pre-order pass for reserving the phone. The pass, which is available with a refundable deposit of Rs. 2,000, will let them purchase the phone on priority via Flipkart. In a latest update, Flipkart has listed the pre-order pass for Nothing Phone 1 on its website, suggesting users may be able to pre-order the pass directly from the e-commerce site without having to use an invite code. The listing says the pass will be purchasable if users have interacted with the Nothing Phone 1 page on Flipkart, and clicked the Notify Me option. The Nothing Phone 1 will be launched in London on July 12 at 8.30pm IST via a virtual event. It will become available exclusively for pass holders from 9pm on July 12. The first smartphone from the brand led by Carl Pei will be powered by a custom-tuned Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G+ chip. Nothing recently confirmed that the phone is made of recycled aluminium material. It is confirmed to run on Nothing OS based on Android as well.
  18. I think I wildly underestimated the impact of iOS 16 and its new Lift Subject from Background feature. This is next-level image stuff that fundamentally changes how you can interact with the 15-year-old platform. Let's start by getting something clear: Apple's next big mobile platform update, iOS 16, is still months away from final release and is currently only in developer beta. The public beta could arrive as soon as next week (the week of July 3). This means that, while I can talk about what I've learned, I can't show you any more than what we all saw during Apple WWDC 2022 keynote last month. Granted, the demo of someone grabbing a bulldog out of a photo and casually dropping it onto a Message was pretty cool on its own. Actually using it, though, is something else. From what I can tell, it doesn't matter what kind of photo from your library you use, or even its age. Virtually any photo with a clear subject (or subjects) is game for the Lift Subject from Background feature. In my library, I opened photos shot with my iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, and iPhone 6 and was able to select subjects in all of them. The iOS 16 Lift Subject from Background selection process. (Image credit: Apple) As demonstrated in the keynote, you open the photo on the iPhone and place your finger on the subject (or multiple subjects, as it's happy to let you grab a group of people). You know your iPhone is finding the subject thanks to a cool visual effect that appears to marquee the subject and transport it to your finger's control. As Apple told me last month, the ability to identify subjects is all part of the company's rapidly developing image-segmentation technology. Apple uses it on the lock screen to put just your image subject in front of the time. In the case of Lift Subject from Background, it lets you select and move the photo subject almost anywhere. It's more I think I understood what I saw during the WWDC keynote demonstration, but it wasn't until I tried the Lift Subject from Background feature myself that I understood the radical iOS change that comes along with it. Look, it's cool that iOS 16 can identify and lift any subject (person, flower, bird, dog) from a photo. What I didn't understand is how you might move that subject elsewhere. This is not a cut-and-paste feature; it's also not a photo-editing feature, à la the Google Pixel's Magic Eraser. It's more like a mobile platform magic carpet ride. Once I had a subject selected, I paused for a moment as I tried to figure out what to do with the floating image under my finger. How would I get it to Messages as they did during the WWDC demo? Now you have your subject under your finger or thumb. (Image credit: Apple) Instinctively, I kept one finger on the subject and with my other hand I touched the screen and swept up from the bottom to access my home screen. Then I selected Messages. I found I could hover with the captured image over my messages list and drop it into one of the threads, or go directly to an open message conversation. Alternatively, I could open a different app like Notes or Keynote and drop in. As long as I held my finger on the captured subject, I could do whatever I wanted with my other hand, including launching new apps or swiping up one-third of the way from the bottom of the screen to access all my open apps and choose the one where I wanted to drop in my subject. You can drop in in a wide variety of apps. (Image credit: Apple) I couldn't recall ever seeing iOS 16 work in this fashion before, like a multi-window system. Advertisement It's weird, cool, and a distinct departure from previous versions of iOS. We've always had multi-touch, but this is like multi-modal touch -- and with a pretty wild new image feature to boot. Time to message that dog. (Image credit: Apple) It's possible that Lift Subject from Background will undergo many changes before Apple launches the final version of iOS 16 in the fall, but I don't see it going backward from this near-revolutionary change (which also happens to work in iPadOS 16). It's the start of something big.
  19. AMD isn't done with AM4, that's been confirmed by themselves, but what exactly does the red team plan on doing with the platform moving forward? Well, the answer would be expanding it with even more Ryzen CPUs with 3D V-Cache and low-end options. AMD's AM4 Longevity Plans: More Ryzen 3D V-Cache and Low-End Options In The Works? There have been various rumors of what AMD is planning on with its AM4 platform now that the company has introduced its AM5 platform. The AM5 platform is the path forward, offering Ryzen 7000 CPUs with Zen 4 cores and DDR5 / PCIe 5.0 support. But AMD knows that the vast majority of its userbase won't be shifting to AM5 just yet. As such, AMD gave us a teaser of what to expect on the platform with its Ryzen 7 5800X3D and several mainstream Ryzen 5000 options. Based on the latest rumors, it looks like we are going to see more of that action coming to the AM4 platform in the coming months. eaker, Greymon55, states that the rumors of AMD prepping not one but several Zen 3D products under the AM4 banner are true and there will be more information coming this month. Note how only Zen 3D is mentioned which means we will get new CPUs under the Ryzen 5000 family. AMD's 5800X3D is based on the 5800X with increased cache and retains the 8 core / 16 thread design. It's possible that the next additions could be based on the Ryzen 5 5600X, Ryzen 9 5900X, and Ryzen 9 5950X. We can't exactly say which SKU will be getting the 3D V-Cache treatment but 5600X3D will be a single CCD V-Cache chip, offering up to 32 MB L3 + 64 MB LLC (V-Cache). The Ryzen 9 parts will theoretically feature dual V-Cache CCD's so that's 64 MB of L3 + 128 MB of LLC (V-Cache) or 64 MB per CCD for a total of 192 MB of cache. If you add in the 8 MB of L2 too, you get a total of 200 MB of L3 cache. Now an interesting route that AMD could go with a Ryzen 9 V-Cache part is to offer a single CCD with V-Cache and the other without it to make up a total of 128 MB of cache. That's still 33% more cache than the 5800X3D and should result in some impressive gaming performance numbers. But as we mentioned earlier, we cannot confirm if such an SKU exists or not but only that AMD might be working on it. As for the low-end parts, it is possible that AMD plans on replacing its Ryzen 4000 Renoir-X chips with Cezanne-X chips under the Ryzen 5000 family. Cezanne-X with Zen 3 cores will offer better performance and offer a good chance of the red team being competitive against Intel's Alder Lake and Raptor Lake budget CPUs till Zen 4 goes mainstream. These 3D V-Cache Ryzen 5000 CPUs will allow users on AM4 to have something new without the need to change their entire platform migrating to AM5. With that said, AM5 will also be getting an upgraded Zen 4 V-Cache lineup by the end of this year, giving enthusiast gamers the option to either stick with their existing AM4 setups and use a Zen 3D part or go all out in the premium Zen 4D range.
  20. Cristiano Ronaldo wants Manchester United to let him leave the club if they receive an appropriate offer for him this summer. The Portugal forward, 37, returned to Old Trafford from Juventus last summer. However, while he was United's top scorer last season - and third in the Premier League - the overall campaign was seen as a big disappointment. United finished sixth in the Premier League so missed out on Champions League qualification. That means Ronaldo, who has a year left on his United contract plus an optional year, faces playing in the Europa League for the first time. It is not something he is viewing with relish and the five-time Ballon d'Or winner feels there could be more attractive options available to him at this stage in his career. Manchester United expect Ronaldo to stay despite Chelsea links The former Real Madrid forward is anxious to stress he respects United but as he enters the final stages of his career, he wants to compete for the biggest prizes. It is understood United do not regard Ronaldo as a player who is for sale. While it would be a blow to United's prestige if they were to lose one of the greatest players they have ever had, it would also solve a few issues for new manager Erik ten Hag. Ronaldo clashed with Harry Maguire over the United captaincy last season, while interim boss Ralf Rangnick's desire to implement a pressing game was thwarted by Ronaldo's refusal to fit in with such a system. Although Ten Hag has said how much he is looking forward to linking up with Ronaldo, it is not clear how the forward's playing style would fit in with the Dutchman. In addition, Ronaldo is the highest paid player in the Premier League and his exit would create more scope within United's summer transfer budget. Ronaldo is due to return to the club for pre-season training this week. It is anticipated he will be on their pre-season tour to Thailand and Australia.
  21. Even with my limited off-road knowledge, I know the Aprilia Tuareg craves to be in grassy verges and stony gullies rather than sit on the M1 where it whines if you rev too much, and an annoying red light starts to blink at you… So, I thought it only fair to take it where it belongs. Sweetlamb training academy Since I’ve only been off-road on a motorcycle once, I’ve been hesitant to tackle the byways near me. But after hearing that Sweetlamb had began some couples off-road training, I couldn’t think of a better excuse to get a little more tuition and finally put the Tuareg through its paces. /dist/_5-62-140/images/placeholders/transparent.600x400.png I should mention that I was unable to change the Tuareg’s tyres to something more catered for harsh off roading before I ventured to Wales – mainly due to supply issues. Riding with the OE tyres (Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR) to Wales and back with some off-roading in between wasn’t a hardship by any means as they are labelled 50/50 and they coped fantastically well. But as they are 50/50 my trainer thought it best not to go full on with harsh mud or wet grass, so we tackled everything but… and I had a fantastic time. Firstly, since it had been a year since I’d last been, we spent some time so I could become reacquainted with the basics. We revisited stance, how to turn and where your bodyweight should be as well as how to skid with control of the back brake. But alongside three KTMs which had seen the terrain a thousand times before, the Aprilia didn’t break a sweat, except for the back brake being a bit softer perhaps, but we got a good skid eventually. Despite being a heavier bike than the KTM 390 Adventure I initially trained on, the extra weight and power didn’t faze me with the Aprilia. Since I’d been living with it, it was easy to handle with the right techniques and had no qualms when tested with tight turns and water crossings. It was receptive on uneven ground and rugged gravel paths and when I ventured into a sodden gully with loose stones, it skipped over them with ease – even with my lack of skill. /dist/_5-62-140/images/placeholders/transparent.600x400.png Next up I don’t think any new tyres are coming my way before I go off-road again, but with plans in September, I can only hope that I get a delivery before then. After all, the Tuareg is ready to hunker down and do some off the road. Update one: Aprilia Tuareg 660 faces snow in the Yorkshire Dales Published: 22.05.25 As my last long term test bike (Moto Guzzi V7 Stone) was a retro run-around, more suited to city streets than long distances, I was excited to have something that, let’s be honest, is the complete polar opposite. Plus, after getting my first taste of trail riding last year, I’m hoping my time with the Tuareg might turn me on to a life of weekend off-roading adventures… but I’m probably getting ahead of myself there. Watch this space… Yorkshire Dales My first trip on the Tuareg was a four-hour slog up the motorway before tackling the twisties of the Yorkshire Dales – all during that freak two days of snowstorms we had back in March. /dist/_5-62-140/images/placeholders/transparent.600x400.png We battled no less than 11 blizzards on the first day and since my overnight stop was the highest pub in England, Tan Hill, there was no respite on the freezing temperatures or poor weather until I got to the safety of the inn. Before I left, I did a little spannering and hooked up my Keis heated jacket charger to the Aprilia, as I knew I was going to be in for a cold couple of days, and that made a world of difference. I was also pleasantly surprised at how comfortable the bike was on long days in the saddle (at first impressions, I initially thought I was going to have a sore posterior half an hour in) and the screen did a good job of keeping the wind and snow at bay, in fact I was quite entertained watching the snow build up on the A1 while I was snug and comfortable on board. /dist/_5-62-140/images/placeholders/transparent.600x400.png But back to the bike. At 5ft 9in, I was a bit worried I was going to struggle with the fairly tall 860mm seat height but, although I have no chance of getting my feet flat on the floor either side, I was pleasantly surprised with how well balanced and manageable the bike feels. Although, when I put the sidestand down on a camber I find that I’m unable to get the bike upright without pushing it to a flatter surface, but that’s just something I need to get the knack of, I’m sure. That feeling of balance and manageability sticks around while it’s moving, too, and although I didn’t push any speed limits in the Dales for fear of slipping on ice, the bike’s handling gave me the confidence to press on regardless. /dist/_5-62-140/images/placeholders/transparent.600x400.png A fleeting introduction My adventures with the Tuareg have been stifled somewhat as I exceeded the first service mileage in my first weekend with it, so it’s returned to Aprilia to be serviced. But as there aren’t many models in the country, Aprilia are holding on to it for a little longer so that it can be used at an event. I’m missing it already. In the meantime, I’ve got my hands on a Moto Guzzi V85TT Travel, so although it might be a week or two until I’m reunited with the Tuareg, at least I’ll have something to compare it to – and I couldn’t be more excited for both!
  22. Ukraine says its forces are enduring intense Russian shelling in the eastern city of Lysychansk, but denies claims that they are surrounded. It is the last Ukrainian-held city in Luhansk, part of the industrial Donbas region. Russia captured the nearby city of Severodonetsk last month. "We barely have time to put out the major fires in Lysychansk," Luhansk governor Serhiy Haidai said. Russia has also fired more missiles at cities in the north and south. Railway tracks and electricity lines in the northern city of Kharkiv were damaged in a series of attacks. No casualties were reported. The southern city of Mykolaiv - on a key route to the port city of Odesa - was shaken by several explosions. The Russian defence ministry said its air force had destroyed five Ukrainian command posts and several ammunition dumps, but that claim has not been independently verified. The blasts came a day after the Russians killed more than 20 people in a missile strike on a block of flats near Odesa. Belarus missile claim Later on Saturday Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said his country's air defences had shot down Ukrainian missiles, though he did not specify where. He is a close ally of Russia's Vladimir Putin and allowed Russian troops to invade Ukraine from Belarus in February. "They are provoking us... Three days ago, maybe a bit more, an attempt to strike military facilities on Belarusian territory was made from the territory of Ukraine," he said. "But, thank God, the Pantsir anti-aircraft systems managed to intercept all the missiles." He added that "we are not seeking to fight in Ukraine". Russia is concentrating its ground offensive in the Donbas, and Governor Haidai said artillery fire was striking Lysychansk from several directions. But a Ukraine National Guard spokesman denied claims by Russian-backed Luhansk separatists that they had encircled the city. Russian sources have tweeted video of the Soviet flag allegedly being placed at a war memorial in Lysychansk, but that has not been verified. The Russian-backed Luhansk separatists claimed they had "occupied the last strategic heights, which allows us to confirm that Lysychansk is completely encircled". In its latest intelligence update, the UK Defence Ministry says Russian forces "continue to achieve minor advances around Lysychansk, with air and artillery strikes". It also accuses Russia of using Soviet-era anti-ship missiles "in a secondary land attack role" - not what they were designed for. The Kh-22 and Kh-32 missiles were "likely" the ones that killed many civilians in Kremenchuk and Odesa, the ministry says. Slovyansk, a major Donbas city held by Ukrainian forces, has also been shelled again by the Russians. Its mayor Vadym Lyakh said banned Russian cluster munitions killed four people there - another claim the BBC was unable to verify. bbc.com/news
  23. Mohamed Salah has signed a new three-year contract with Liverpool. BBC Sport understands the deal - worth more than £350,000-a-week - makes the 30-year-old the highest paid player in the club's history. The Egypt forward only had a year left on his previous deal and there had been doubts about whether he would stay. "It's the best decision for us and best decision for him. He belongs with us I think. This is his club now," said Reds boss Jurgen Klopp. "This is a special treat for our supporters to enjoy their weekend even more. I'm sure there will be some celebrations for this news tonight." Salah has scored 156 goals in 254 appearances during his five years at Anfield since moving from Roma. The wide player said: "I feel great and I am excited to win trophies with the club. It's a happy day for everyone. We are in a good position to fight for everything." Salah has won the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, Fifa Club World Cup and Uefa Super Cup during his time at Anfield. He has also won or shared three Premier League Golden Boots and been named the PFA player of the year twice while with Klopp's side. "I have no doubt Mo's best years are still to come. And that's saying something, because the first five seasons here have been the stuff of legend," said Klopp. The renewal comes as a big boost after the departure of fellow forward Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich this summer. Liverpool won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup this season but were in the running for a quadruple until the final week of the season, falling just short in the Premier League and losing the Champions League final to Real Madrid. They have recruited Benfica and Uruguay striker Darwin Nunez for an initial £64m to offset the loss of Mane. "It takes a little bit of time, I think, to renew, but now everything is done so we just need to focus on what's next," said former Chelsea forward Salah. "I think you can see in the last five or six years the team was always going [upwards]. Last season we were close to winning four, but unfortunately in the last week of the season we lost two trophies. "We have new signings as well. We just need to keep working hard, have a good vision, be positive and go for everything again." Salah's priority was to stay at Anfield - analysis Mandeep Sanghera, BBC Sport Talks had been drawn out but they accelerated over recent days and a Reds delegation, led by new sporting director Julian Ward, travelled to meet Salah on his summer holiday to get the contract signed. Mike Gordon, president of Fenway Sports Group, which owns the club, also played a key role in negotiations. Gordon and Ward had face-to-face talks with Salah in Miami around the turn of the year and these were significant as this was when the broad structure of the deal was discussed. Salah's priority was to stay at Liverpool and the club's was to keep him as areas of the contract continued to be ironed out. The Egypt international made it clear he would not countenance being sold and his stance was to either renew or leave on a free at the end of the contract which this has superseded and was due to expire in summer 2023. The contract is structured in a way which fits within Liverpool's current model but also rewards individual performance. It is essentially built on reward for the level of goals and goal involvements Salah contributes. This also keeps another key figure in Liverpool's success at the club as, in April, manager Jurgen Klopp and his team extended their deals with the club until 2026. bbc.com/sports
  24. At least 21 people, including one child, have died in overnight Russian missile strikes on Ukraine's southern Odesa region, Ukrainian officials say. The state emergency service, DSNS, says 16 people were killed in a nine-storey building hit by one missile in the village of Serhiyivka. Another five people, including the child, were killed in a separate strike on a holiday resort in the village. Russia has fired dozens of missiles on Ukrainian cities in the past few days. On Friday Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov again denied that Russia was hitting civilian targets. "We heard three explosions and now there is nothing left of the recreation centre," local resident Yulia Bondar, 60, told the BBC. The DSNS said the missiles hit Serhiyivka at about 01:00 on Friday (22:00 GMT Thursday). It released footage showing firefighters searching for survivors in the wreckage of the nine-storey building. They were also seen carrying what looked like the body of one of the victims in a bag. The DSNS says 38 people, including six children, were injured in the Russian strikes. Maryna Martynenko, a DSNS spokeswoman in the Odesa region, told Ukrainian TV that the building's external wall was damaged, and a nearby shop was set ablaze after the strike. Firefighters later put out the fire. She said 60 rescuers were currently working at the site. As many as 150 people are believed to have lived in the building. The child killed at the holiday resort was a 12-year-old boy, said Kyrylo Tymoshenko, deputy head of President Volodymyr Zelensky's office. Ukrainian officials said three missiles were launched from Russian warplanes over the Black Sea. Odesa regional administration spokesman Serhiy Bratchuk said Soviet-era X-22 missiles were believed to have been used. Andriy Yermak, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's chief of staff, accused Russia of being a "terrorist country". "In response to defeats on the battlefields, they [Russians] are waging a war on civilians," he said. Though the focus of its war effort is in eastern Ukraine, Russia continues to use longer range missiles to target cities right across the country. Last night Odesa region was hit again. It happened soon after Russia's retreat from Snake Island in the western Black Sea. But the region, like others, has been targeted throughout the war. Russia claims to be targeting military sites and infrastructure. But in reality it's often hitting civilian areas - like apartment blocks. For many Ukrainians this seems deliberate, an attempt designed to break the country's morale. But it can often have the opposite effect, and strengthen Western resolve too. And if Russia really didn't mean to kill civilians it suggests their weapons are often inaccurate. The reality is that Russia's long range missile strikes show a weakness as much as a strength. Most of these strikes are having to be conducted outside Ukrainian air space. Russia still doesn't have control of the skies. That also means that it is unable to fly surveillance and reconnaissance flights over the country to gather intelligence. Russia has made no secret that it's trying to target military supply lines from the west. But there's little evidence it's had much success - weapons are getting through. Ukraine had hoped that the Russian withdrawal on Thursday from the strategically important Snake Island would ease the threat to Ukraine's biggest Black Sea port of Odesa and wider region. Russia said it had withdrawn its garrison as a "gesture of goodwill" to prove it was not obstructing grain exports from Odesa and other Ukrainian ports - but Ukraine dismissed that claim, saying Moscow continued to shell its grain stores. In separate developments on Friday: Ukraine's military said Russian troops were focusing on encircling Ukrainian soldiers in the eastern city of Lysychansk, aiming "to establish complete control over the Luhansk region" The death toll from Monday's Russian missile strike on a busy shopping centre in the central city of Kremenchuk rose to 19, with 62 injured, the DSNS said Overnight, Russian troops shelled the Chernihiv, Kharkiv and Mykolaiv regions in Ukraine's north, north-west and south, local officials said bbc.com/news
