  1. Recap: Disney and EA have been partners in bringing Star Wars games to market since inking a 10-year exclusivity deal in 2013. Since then, EA has produced the successful, if occasionally controversial, Battlefront I and II. When asked during an earnings call, Disney chief Bob Iger praised their relationship with EA and spoke in support of Disney's decision to license their franchises instead of developing games in-house. In spite of the recent turmoil surrounding the release of Star Wars: Battlefront II and the PR fallout endured by Electronic Arts, Disney CEO Bob Iger said on a recent earnings call that the relationship between the two companies is "good." "We've had good relationships with some of those we're licensing to, notably EA, and the relationship on the Star Wars properties, and we're probably going to continue to stay on that side of the business and put our capital elsewhere," Iger said. In the past, Disney developed and published games like Epic Mickey and Disney Infinity in-house through the now-defunct Disney Interactive Studios. Nowadays, Disney licenses its franchises to outside studios instead, with EA being their largest partner. In 2013, Disney signed a 10-year deal with EA that gave EA exclusive rights to develop Star Wars video games. Iger discussed the reasoning to shift from internal development to a licensing model, noting that Disney's history of internal game development has been sub-par. "Over the years we've tried our hand in self-publishing, we've bought companies, we've sold companies, we've bought developers, we've closed developers," Iger said on the earnings call. "We've found over the years that we haven't been particularly good at the self-publishing side, but we've been great at the licensing side which obviously doesn't require that much allocation of capital." Since 2013, EA has released two Star Wars console games, Battlefront I and II. Both games have been commercially successful, with the first Battlefront shipping more than 13 million copies during its launch quarter, and the sequel shipping 9 million copies during the same time frame. Battlefront II, however, was marred by significant outrage from gamers in response to the widespread use of microtransactions, some of which gave deep-pocketed players a gameplay advantage, and others that unlocked various aspects of the game. It was reported at the time that it would take 4,528 hours of gameplay or $2,100 in real money to unlock the full game. In response, EA removed microtransactions from the game temporarily, bringing back less disruptive loot boxes a few months later. These issues have not slowed down the development of new titles. Most recently, EA-owned studio and Titanfall developer Respawn announced Jedi: Fallen Order, expected to be released during the 2019 holiday season. Assuming the deal hasn't changed, we can expect EA and Disney's partnership on Star Wars releases to run through 2023.

  4. Something to look forward to: Samsung's upcoming flagship, the Galaxy S10, will reportedly be among the first smartphones to support the new Wi-Fi 6 standard. With it (and a compatible router), you'll get improved performance and efficiency, among other benefits. Samsung’s Galaxy S10 recently visited the FCC, revealing what little remained a mystery about the upcoming flagship. Fortunately, Droid Life has combed through the documents and plucked the pertinent details for us. According to the publication, the Galaxy S10 will arrive in three flavors: a standard model known as the SM-973U, the Galaxy S10+ with model number SM-G975U and a budget version – model SM-G970U – that could be called the Galaxy S10e or the S10 Lite. The FCC documents points to support for 802.11ax Wi-Fi, better known as Wi-Fi 6 under the Wi-Fi Alliance’s new naming convention. Wi-Fi 6 promises increased capacity, higher data rates, better efficiency and improved performance in environments with multiple connected devices like homes with lots of IoT gadgets. We recently published a primer on Wi-Fi 6 for those not quite up to speed on the next-gen standard. Previous leaks have suggested the Galaxy S10 will arrive with up to 12GB of RAM and 1TB of storage alongside Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 SoC. Pricing could climb as high as $1,800 for the aforementioned top-end model which would be even more than the rumored starting price of Sammy’s foldable phone Samsung’s next Unpacked event is scheduled for February 20, 2019, just days before the start of Mobile World Congress.
  5. The big picture: Introducing additional privacy features to WhatsApp may be beneficial to some users, but it is only a minimal guard against those with physical access to a mobile device. Leaking message contents to other apps is a far more serious issue that has not been well addressed. An important update has made its way into WhatsApp Messenger for iOS. Users are now able to restrict access to the app as a means of protecting private conversations with the help of FaceID or TouchID. To enable the feature, tap Settings, then navigate to Account. The option to enable Screen Lock can be found under the Privacy section. If anyone does enable the feature, they should also ensure that their notification previews have been properly set to hide sensitive content from being displayed. Calls received from WhatsApp are still able to be answered without requiring biometric authentication. For now, Screen Lock is somewhat of an all or nothing feature. There is no way to restrict access to only selected conversations. It is still a feature that is exclusive to the iOS version of the app, but there are rumblings of an Android equivalent arriving sometime in the near future. Fingerprint authentication is expected to be supported on devices running Android 6.0 and above. Even though WhatsApp is improving its privacy features, Facebook is still the parent company. The co-founders are now funding Signal as an alternative to the platform that they sold out. Remorse has been shown for selling the entire user base to Facebook, knowing full well that highly targeted and borderline invasive advertising would be coming down the pipeline. Numerous reports have appeared over the past year claiming that WhatsApp can leak message contents to other apps on the same mobile device. Although this has been confirmed true be several security researchers, Facebook is still touting WhatApp's end-to-end encryption as completely secure.
  6. In brief: Cryptocurrency exchange QuadrigaCX’s 115,000 customers have lost a combined total of $145 million, after CEO and founder Gerald Cotton unfortunately passed away from complications caused by Crohn’s Disease last year. The company has less than half a million left in cash. A common practice among cryptocurrency exchanges is to store customers' coins in cold wallets, which are offline and encrypted and can only be accessed by those who know the password. This protects them from hacking and virtual theft but does mean that the entire value of the wallet rests in the hands of those with the password. An affidavit filed by QuadrigaCX on January 31 reveals that there are 26,500 bitcoins ($92 million), 11,00 bitcoin cash ($1.3 million), 11,000 bitcoin cash SV ($707,000), 35,000 bitcoin gold ($352,000), 200,000 litecoin ($6.5 million) and 430,000 ether ($46 million) stored on Cotton’s encrypted and inaccessible laptop. While the company has hired several security researchers (read: hackers) to attempt to access the laptop, they’ve had very little success so far. The company’s stance has gone from “Quadriga’s inventory of cryptocurrency has become unavailable and some of it may be lost” to “most, if not all” of their customers will suffer damages. To try and buy time to access the laptop and possibly to liquidate the company, QuadrigaCX has applied for a stay of proceedings from the Supreme Court. Ideally, it could let them access around $50 million or so that is currently trapped in a legal battle with a Canadian bank, though a good portion of that money is their customers', too. Since it’s leaked out that customers may not get their money back, many have taken to Reddit and Twitter to request proof of death and expressing their anger that the money was so mismanaged. QuadrigaCX employees have admitted that they’re even receiving death threats.

  8. After reports that it was causing websites to be inaccessible, Mozilla has stopped delivering their Firefox 65 update to Windows users. Earlier in the week we reported on new privacy features coming with Mozilla’s latest update to Firefox. Unfortunately for Mozilla and users alike, the release of Firefox 65 hasn’t gone to plan. Following complaints that websites were inaccessible, Mozilla has decided to pull the automatic update for Windows users. The number of websites affected varied from user to user, but the issue was always the same. People were being shown an error saying ‘Your connection is not secure. SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER’. The error claims that the security certificate was faulty, even for major websites like Twitter or LinkedIn. Mozilla has since confirmed that the issue stems from HTTPS scanning being enabled in Avast or AVG antivirus software. There have been similar reports from people using other po[CENSORED]r antivirus products like Kaspersky, but those haven’t been confirmed by Mozilla. Any Firefox users who already downloaded the update to Firefox 65 and are having issues accessing websites can manually disable HTTPS Scanning within their antivirus software. Though according to an update from Techdows, Avast and others are already working on updates that will disable Firefox HTTPS filtering by default. Alternatively, you may change a Firefox setting in about:config, setting security.enterprise_roots.enabled to true. The preference will force Firefox to recognize certificates added to the Windows Certificate store. The main new feature debuting in Firefox 65 was, ironically, improved content blocking alongside better control of how Firefox responded to trackers. Windows users looking forward to the new features will have to wait a little longer until the situation is fully resolved.

  10. In brief: Remember back in 2017 when reports of PC Building Simulator first arrived? Following a lengthy period in Early Access, the game where you put together a virtual computer much like you would in real life now has a full release. The finished product launches alongside a partnership with Nvidia, meaning you can use some of the green team’s top graphics cards in your builds. While most readers of this site will likely find PC building a breeze, the program isn’t just for teaching novices the ropes without putting their pricey hardware at risk. It also includes a virtual PC building and repair business sim, where you perform upgrades, repairs, and complete system builds for customers. The game contains numerous licensed components from real-world manufacturers. The full release adds parts from Nvidia, so you can include Founders Editions of the GTX 10 Series and RTX 20 Series in your builds, which might be the only way some of us will ever put together a PC with an RTX 2080 Ti inside it. An impressive element of the game is that once you’ve finished your computer, you can run a simulation of 3D Mark. If you’re impressed by the approximate benchmarks, you might be more encouraged to go out and buy the real parts. PC Building Simulator is available on Steam now for $17.99. It’s a sale price, so grab it before February 5 when it goes up to $19.99. The slightly more expensive Overclocked Edition ($22.98 / $24.98) includes some custom cases. For those interested, here’s a full list of the game’s partners. 3D Mark AMD Antec Arctic Asus Cooler Master Cryorig Corsair Deepcool EKWB EVGA Fractal Design Futuremark Gamer Storm GSkill Gigabyte In Win Intel MSI Nvidia NZXT Patriot Raijintek Razer Republic of Gamers Team Group Thermaltake UL, formerly known as Underwriters Laboratories Viper Gaming XPG Silverstone Zotac

  12. Something to look forward to: A classic Mario game is being made into a mobile app so that all of the fun can be had on modern devices. Action-puzzle game Dr. Mario World will debut in summer 2019. Originally launched in 1990 for the NES, Dr. Mario is a game that somewhat resembles Tetris. Instead of forming complete rows, colored pills are stacked around viruses to try and wipe them out. Nintendo has shared that Dr. Mario World is an upcoming mobile app that should be ready for summer 2019. Development is under way by Nintendo and LINE, with support from NHN Entertainment. The app will be free to download, but will contain in-app purchases. At launch, approximately 60 countries will be supported on iOS and Android. For those that have played the original game, getting to the maximum of level 20 is not all that difficult. Viruses fill up nearly all of the screen and a mistake at the beginning of a round is deadly, but the challenge is still limited, making single-player mode not all that exciting after a few hours. Although Nintendo has not disclosed what features will be making it into the mobile app, multiplayer games are a must-have feature. Battling head to head and racing to clear all of the viruses is the best part of the game. Building up elaborate combinations of capsules and clearing multiple sets of pieces with one new pill causes unwanted pieces to fall into an opponents vial of viruses, offering a means of slowing down the other player. There is great potential for Dr. Mario World to be a revitalized rendition of the original game, but Nintendo will need to be sure that in-app purchases do not ruin any of the original grandeur.

  14. They'll be far easier for casual users to understand Error messages are the norm for PC users, but that doesn't make them any less frustrating when they pop up; particularly when they don't offer much in the way of actionable information. Poorly-explained errors filled with seemingly random letters and numbers can often force you to spend hours desperately Googling an issue that may be relatively simple to fix. Microsoft's Windows error messages are certainly no exception to this irritating trend, and can be some of the worst offenders. Fortunately, it seems Microsoft is taking it upon themselves to remedy the situation - somewhat. As reported by Ars Technica (via WinFuture), the company is rolling out an improved version of their Windows 10 Setup error messages in the OS' upcoming April Update. As seen in the image above, Windows 10's Setup system will soon tell you precisely what a given issue is, while giving you clear directions to solve it. For example, if you're upgrading to Windows 10 and you have certain apps that are incompatible with the OS, Windows 10 Setup will let you know what those apps are while prompting you to get rid of them. In some cases, it seems that a direct "Uninstall" button will be included right in the Setup window, though some apps will require more manual action on the user's part. If the issue can't be fixed with a simple program uninstall, Windows 10 Setup will also include a "Learn more" button, which will take you directly to the appropriate section of Microsoft's Knowledge Base when clicked. Of course, simply improving the quality of Windows 10 Setup's errors only addresses one small part of a much bigger problem (the dreaded Blue Screens of Death could use some work). However, it's still a step in the right direction for Microsoft, and hopefully an indication that other parts of the Windows 10 ecosystem will receive similar error message overhauls in the future.
