  1. Bottom line: Google has already shared many of the ways that it fights against the spread of false information, but has now put all of those methods into once easily readable document that was presented at a security conference. Google is fairly secretive about how its search results are generated in an astoundingly short amount of time. In the current climate of news and the term "fake news" being thrown around regularly, Google has come forward at the Munich Security Conference to present a white paper on how it is fighting disinformation. Drowning out disinformation in Search, News, and on YouTube is no easy feat, but 20 years of combating traditional spam certainly helps. Each of these three Google segments have their own unique fake news blocking techniques in place. Before diving into how Google manages its platforms, know that Google defines disinformation and fake news as information that is spread while known to be inaccurate by the creator, "with the hope that others believe it is true or to create discord in society." According to the white paper, Google Search and News make use of algorithms without any human intervention when determining rankings. End user behaviors are analyzed and some are asked to rate the quality and usefulness of results. This feedback is used to try and improve the ranking order of web pages and news articles. CEO Sundar Pichai has already shared essentially the same information before Congress after Google was accused of mani[CENSORED]ting political search results. An important fact about Google's algorithms are that they "do not make subjective determinations about the truthfulness of webpages." Instead, only measurable and verifiable data is used to give a trust score of sorts. The number of other websites linking to or referencing a page and authority rank are contributing factors. Once a web page meets enough of Google's criteria to be considered legitimate and of good quality, it is given a boost in results. Google News imposes even stricter guidelines for what will be prominently featured because timeliness is a major factor in ranking. All of the news produced on any given day that Google crawls through can be used to determine when and which topics are considered important. Following the automated filters in place, extra context is being given to "Your Money or Your Life" pages. Google looks for medical, legal, financial, and public information pages that may be used to make critical decisions. These YMYL category pages receive special ranking consideration based on authority and user trust. For example, anti-vaccine campaigns may be moved down rankings considerably due to their provably false information being spread. Humans are involved in rating some of these pages, but do not determine the absolute rank of any site or individual web page. YouTube is so large that it could have its own book about how disinformation is being fought against. Main techniques to fight fake news include only suggesting videos that are very likely to be quality content and offering contextual references alongside potentially disputed information. Searching for questionable topics will not yield as many directly relevant suggestions for more videos compared to searching for some excellent computer hardware topics. The paper concludes with section on Google's advertising platform and how malicious content is filtered out. Nothing there is terribly surprising, so feel free to read through the paper yourself if you really want to know every last detail.

  3. In brief: Launching and sustaining a digital game store is no easy task—just ask Razer. The company’s Razer Game Store will be closing next week, only 10 months after it opened. At the beginning of April last year, the po[CENSORED]r gaming peripheral maker launched its store. Unlike Epic’s recent entry into the market, Razer’s version sold game keys that had to be redeemed on Steam and Uplay. To try and tempt people onto its service, Razer offered its Silver loyalty rewards credits with each purchase, which can be used on items such as Razer products, digital gift vouchers, and more. Additionally, anyone who paid using Razer's Gold virtual currency could earn even more Silver points. But despite these incentives, which also included exclusive game discounts, Razer said the store would close on February 28th at 4 AM Eastern time as part of “realignment plans.” "It has been a privilege for us to recommend and deliver great digital game deals to you," it said. "We have been extremely fortunate to have you as part of our awesome community. Thank you for the support and making all this possible." The move won’t affect games that were purchased via Razer’s store, but any keys and discount vouchers must be used before the service closes permanently. Pre-ordered games will still be fulfilled. Anyone with Razer Silver can still use it after the store closes, and Razer Gold will continue to work in the Razer Gold Catalog.

  9. Highly anticipated: There's just one week to go until the first round of 5G phones are announced at Mobile World Congress, and chief among them will be the LG V50. According to recent leaks the phone will feature a Snapdragon 855 SoC, a 4000mAh battery, a 6” display and a massive vapor chamber to cool the 5G components. Images of the new device come from Evan Blass and most of the details come from an LG press release in South Korea. Though the press release doesn't specify the V50 by name, given that the release date for the unnamed 5G phone and the date on the image of the LG V50 align, it seems highly likely that they're the same phone. LG has confirmed that the device will release in the first half of this year, but it's unclear exactly how soon. There’s no evidence that the device will be exclusive to Sprint, but obviously, they’ll be a major launch partner and use the phone to demonstrate and advertise their new 5G network. Other than screaming 5G compatibility (hopefully that will be dialed down in an unlocked variant), for the most part LG seems to have reused their LG V40 shell, which makes sense as that device is only a few months old. While both phones have the same triple camera configuration on the back, the cameras seem to sit flush on the V50 whereas there's a bump on the V40. This suggests that the phone is slightly thicker than its companion, which may be a requirement for the additional cooling and battery needed to handle 5G. The first cities getting Sprint’s 5G network will be Atlanta, New York City, Kansas City, Chicago, Dallas, Phoenix, Houston, Los Angeles, and Washington D.C., though expansion into other areas should be quick. If you’d like to join the Sprint 5G network but aren’t keen on the V50, they’ve mentioned that they’ll launch with a Samsung 5G phone as well.
  10. Why it matters: Twitter apparently retains direct messages for years even if the accounts are suspended or deactivated. This could potentially have privacy ramifications leading to regulatory action. Deleting your direct messages on Twitter doesn't actually delete them at all. In fact, Twitter appears to retain messages for years even if an account is suspended or deactivated, according to a report by TechCrunch. Security researcher Karan Saini told the publication he found that messages he'd sent years ago were still there after he downloaded an archive of his account. Some of the messages were from accounts that had long since been deactivated. Saini was even able to use a deprecated Twitter API to get DMs that had been deleted from both sender and recipient. TechCrunch conducted their own tests and confirmed they were able to retrieve direct messages that were sent from suspended or deactivated accounts. Anyone can download their Twitter archive, which essentially has all the data Twitter stores for your account. Saini's primary concern wasn't necessarily that the messages were being retained, but rather the length of time those messages were held. Per Twitter's official privacy policy: "We keep Log Data for a maximum of 18 months. When deactivated, your Twitter account, including your display name, username, and public profile, will no longer be viewable on Twitter.com, Twitter for iOS, and Twitter for Android. For up to 30 days after deactivation it is still possible to restore your Twitter account if it was accidentally or wrongfully deactivated." It appears as if Twitter is intentionally retaining data after the 30 days are up and after the 18 month maximum. As TechCrunch notes, this is egregious not for security reasons but for privacy. In fact, Twitter may be liable under Europe's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and made to pay up to four percent of their annual income for violations. For now, Twitter has stated that the company is "looking into this further to ensure we have considered the entire scope of the issue."
