Elon Musk spoke in a virtual townhall event Friday and said that his petition giveaway wasn't meant to assist in voter registration. Tech billionaire Elon Musk defended the legality of his super PAC’s $1 million daily giveaway to registered voters in swing states, days after the Justice Department sent a letter warning that the lottery-style contest might be unlawful. Musk, during an online town hall event Friday on his social media app X, asserted that the purpose of the contest was not to induce people to register to vote. That’s a distinction that legal experts have said is important, because it’s illegal under federal law to pay people to register to vote. “To be clear, this is not a petition to vote for or register for anyone. It’s really a petition in support of the Constitution of the United States, and in particular, freedom of speech and the right to bear arms,” he said. Musk’s America PAC has been giving away $1 million a day since Saturday to a registered voter in one of seven battleground states who has signed an online petition pledging support to the First and Second Amendments. The PAC is also offering $100 to Pennsylvania registered voters who sign the petition. When Musk debuted the giveaways, he was conducting a series of townhalls where he repeatedly emphasized the importance of voter registration and his support of former President Donald Trump. Derived from the Malay words for “person of the forest," Sumatran orangutans are critically endangered. The Sumatran orangutan is almost exclusively arboreal, living among the trees of tropical rainforests. Females virtually never travel on the ground and adult males do so rarely. Sumatran orangutans are reported to have closer social ties than their Bornean cousins. This has been attributed to mass fruit on fig trees, where groups of Sumatran orangutans can come together to feed. Adult males are typically solitary while females are accompanied by offspring. Historically, the Sumatran orangutan was distributed over the entire island of Sumatra and further south into Java. The species' range is now restricted to the north of the island with a majority in the provinces of North Sumatra and Aceh. Of the nine existing po[CENSORED]tions of Sumatran orangutans, only seven have prospects of long-term viability, each with an estimated 250 or more individuals. Only three po[CENSORED]tions contain more than 1,000 orangutans. Orangutans that were confiscated from the illegal trade or as pets are being reintroduced to Bukit Tigapuluh National Park. They number around 70 and are reproducing. Sumatran Orangutan | Species | WWF

The Ferrari 250 GT SWB Speciale Aerodinamica Pininfarina 1962 is a rare and exceptional example of automotive craftsmanship, engineering and design. It is one of only four cars built to the same specification by Pininfarina, the famed Italian coachbuilder, and it represents the pinnacle of Ferrari's GT cars from the early 1960s. With its sleek and aerodynamic lines, the 250 GT SWB Speciale was a milestone in automotive design and engineering, and it remains a sought-after classic car among collectors and enthusiasts. This Ferrari is equipped with a 3.0-liter V-12 engine, which produces 280 horsepower at 7,200 rpm and 213 lb-ft of torque at 5,500 rpm. The engine is mated to a four-speed manual transmission with a limited-slip differential. The car has a top speed of 155 mph and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just over 6 seconds. The lives of seafarers are rarely documented, as working at sea by its very nature can be a lonely and isolating existence. The seafarers’ photography competition, run by the ITF Seafarers’ Trust, offers a glimpse into a largely unseen world; the hard labour, the camaraderie, the magnitude of the structures that stand as workplaces, and even the occasional beauty of working on ships. The annual competition, which started during the pandemic, tracks the consistent issues faced by seafarers and captures key moments and their unique impact on those working at sea. This year, Seascape’s picture editor, Joe Plimmer, was on the judging panel and has collated some of his favourite shots The Life at Sea: a rare glimpse into the highs and lows of seafaring | Environment | The Guardian

The WMO Air Quality and Climate Bulletin includes a special focus on wildfires. It also looks at global and regional concentrations of particulate matter pollution and its harmful effects on crops in 2023. The WMO bulletin was released for Clean Air for Blue Skies Day on 7 September. This year’s theme is Invest in Clean Air Now. Ambient air pollution causes more than 4.5 million premature deaths annually and wreaks a high economic and environmental cost. The bulletin, the fourth in an annual series, explores the intricate relationship between air quality and climate. The chemical species that lead to a degradation in air quality are normally co-emitted with greenhouse gases. Thus, changes in one inevitably cause changes in the other. Air quality in turn affects ecosystem health as air pollutants settle from the atmosphere to Earth’s surface. Deposition of nitrogen, sulfur and ozone reduces the services provided by natural ecosystems such as clean water, biodiversity, and carbon storage. Tottenham Hotspur have successfully appealed against a red card shown to Son Heung-min for a tackle that led to Everton midfielder Andre Gomes breaking his ankle. Tottenham Hotspur have successfully appealed against a red card shown to Son Heung-min for a tackle that led to Everton midfielder Andre Gomes breaking his ankle, so the Spurs striker can play in his side’s next three games, the FA said on Tuesday. Gomes suffered a fracture-dislocation to his right ankle in the second half of Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Goodison Park when he landed off balance at speed after the tackle from Son and then collided with Spurs full-back Serge Aurier. Referee Martin Atkinson initially showed a yellow card but then produced a red card – an automatic three-match ban – after a VAR intervention, with the Premier League stating Son had endangered Gomes’ safety with his initial challenge. “Son Heung-min will be available for Tottenham Hotspur FC’s next three domestic fixtures after an independent Regulatory Commission upheld a claim of wrongful dismissal,” the FA said in a statement. Today marks the start of our main AMD X870 chipset coverage as we begin reviewing boards using AMD's second round of chipsets on Socket AM5. These boards, of course, support both Ryzen 7000 and the so far slightly ill-fated Ryzen 9000 series, but it's likely they will appeal most to those yet to upgrade to the Socket AM5 platform, rather than offering meaningful upgrades for anyone that's already made the switch. As usual with a new chipset series, we have a bunch of new motherboards inbound and first up is a review of the ASUS ROG crosshair X870E Hero. There aren't many changes in terms of what X870 brings compared to X670, with greater I/O bandwidth and wider PCIe Gen 5 support being the main takeaways. With X870, USB4 ports and 40 Gbps speeds come as standard and the PCIe Gen 5 lane count rises from eight on X670 to 24 on X870, plus Wi-Fi 7 is included with most models, rather than Wi-Fi 6E. However, aside from Wi-Fi and wider USB4 support, the "Extreme" versions of both chipsets—X670E and X870E—are practically identical when it comes to core features, so the key benefits here for potential upgraders are board-specific features. The ASUS ROG Crosshair X870E Hero is stunning, as you'd expect for a $700 motherboard with UK readers paying a slightly more reasonable £570, with massive heatsinks for the power delivery and M.2 SSDs and new Polymo Lighting II RGB array on top of the I/O shroud—undoubtedly the board's flagship visual feature. Like other manufacturers this time around, ASUS has fine-tuned its tool-free mechanisms on the board so they're now more extensive and hopefully easier to use. Aesthetics, brand loyalty and price will likely dictate where people point their wallets here, with competing models such as the MSI MPG X870E Carbon Wi-Fi and ASRock X870E Taichi being alternative contenders for your cash, also with solid reputations. Of course this motherboard, like all 800-series and 600-series chipset boards, will support the upcoming Ryzen 9000 X3D Zen 5 3D V-Cache models when they arrive, but whether you opt for current Ryzen 9000 or a Zen 4-based Ryzen 7000 CPU, the ROG Crosshair X870E Hero with its 18+2+2 power stages and seemingly ample cooling is clearly designed to handle extended workloads with 12 and 16-core parts, as well as lengthy gaming sessions. As well as this, the high price tag of this caliber of board also brings premium features, some of which are already mentioned, but we'll be going into more detail later. The former president's campaign is focused on immigration, inflation and foreign policy. The candidate himself is throwing more personal punches at Vice President Kamala Harris. The video of former President Donald Trump falling to the ground, then rising to his feet from underneath a pile of Secret Service agents with blood streaked across his cheek, pumping his fist in the air and shouting "fight, fight, fight," is among the most compelling clips in modern American political history. Captured moments after he was shot in the ear by a would-be assassin in July it embodies Trump's carefully crafted narrative that he is strong enough to stare down any foe, foreign or domestic, on behalf of his "Make America Great Again" agenda. A still image has appeared on merchandise and become iconic among his supporters. And yet the film sits idly in the can, unused so far in the stretch run of his campaign to return to the Oval Office. His advisers refuse to discuss publicly whether his closing ads will include clips of the assassination attempt, but they are well aware of the powerful video in their hands. A shift to the personal narrative could distract from the substantive issues that Trump aides believe are giving their candidate a leg up over his Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris. Polls show a close race across seven battleground states that figure to determine the winner of the Nov. 5 election, and Trump is expected to start making his final case to voters at a rally Sunday at New York City's Madison Square Garden. The burning question is whether Trump will eventually buck his own pattern and stick to the message. "Kamala has failed over the last four years and only President Donald J. Trump can fix the problems that are facing our nation," Trump campaign senior adviser Danielle Alvarez said. "That includes inflation. That includes the border. That includes the chaos that we're seeing at home and abroad." Trump has a closing argument. He's not sticking to it.

What Is a Lincoln Nautilus? Now in its second generation, the two-row, five-passenger Lincoln Nautilus slots neatly between Lincoln’s larger three-row, seven-passenger Aviator and smaller, much cheaper, but also two-row and five-passenger Corsair. Starting at one Hamilton more than $52K, you have a choice of two powertrains and three trims—Premiere ($52,010), Reserve ($56,445), and Black Label ($75,945). The Nautilus features the brand’s latest design language with what we assessed as a handsome interpretation of the new “glider” grille that’s supposed to resemble—you guessed it—a glider. Our sole test subject for this competition was the high-dollar Black Label model with said glider grille illuminating, which combine with the taillights to treat you to a cool light show when approaching/unlocking the Nautilus. Seemingly the only thing our top-trim test vehicle didn’t come standard with is the handsome Jet Appearance package, which blacks out most of the Nautilus’ chrome and elevates the overall look. Ours rode on fancy-looking 11-spoke, 21-inch wheels, though the Jet pack gets you 22s. Driver and passengers are treated to all sorts of luxury creature comforts, including massaging, heated, and vented 24-way front seats, active noise cancellation, and a massive, many-way-configurable 48-inch screen that displays a wealth of information to everyone on board. Fine-looking materials abound, even including little stuff like butcher-block wood inlays in places most carmakers would just skip over. All Nautiluses are available with three onboard fragrances (Lincoln offers four additional options if the initial three aren’t to your liking), and the Black Label has perhaps the best factory-installed car stereo on sale right now courtesy of Revel and 28 speakers. Special praise is in order for the Redwood Venetian leather seats. “This burnt-caramel-colored leather is fantastic,” features editor Scott Evans said, “and the white stitching is a perfect accent.” The crazy part? The rear seats are even comfier. The standard powertrain is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission. This engine is good for 250 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque and is rated at 21/29/24 mpg city/highway/combined. Pony up an extra $1,500 for the hybrid version, and the eight-speed is replaced by an eCVT. The “e” part means there are two motor-generators that add 168 hp and 236 lb-ft via a planetary continuously variable transmission. Total system output is 300 hp and 295 lb-ft. AWD is standard. The latter’s performance is adequate, as our test team recorded a 0–60-mph time of 6.9 seconds and a quarter-mile run of 15.2 seconds at 96.0 mph. As for braking and handling, it recorded a stopping distance of 133 feet from 60 mph, and an F-150-like time of 28.8 seconds around our figure-eight course. So it’s no serious athlete—on paper, at least. The Lincoln Nautilus Is MotorTrend’s 2025 SUV of the Year
