The kākāpō is a nocturnal, flightless parrot. And its strangeness doesn't end there. It's critically endangered and one of New Zealand’s unique treasures. Kākāpō Recovery leads kākāpō conservation efforts today. They face major challenges due to kākāpō infertility and inbreeding. Nevertheless, they've had some triumphant successes using innovative techniques to grow the po[CENSORED]tion. The history of kākāpō is a story of drama, despair and hope. Before humans arrived, kākāpō were abundant throughout New Zealand. Po[CENSORED]tion numbers dropped swiftly due to hunting, introduced predators and land clearance. Conservation efforts began in 1894, but by the mid-1900s, kākāpō teetered on the edge of extinction. What's unusual about kākāpō? The kākāpō is a large green parrot with a distinctive owl-like face and a waddling gait. They cannot fly, but they climb well. Kākāpō are: nocturnal flightless the only lek-breeding parrot species in the world perhaps the longest-lived bird species in the world, estimated to reach 90 years the heaviest parrot species in the world – smaller females weigh 1.4 kg, and males 2.2 kg. And they can pile on 1 kg of fat prior to a breeding season. Kākāpō: New Zealand native land birds

In the United States, the life expectancy is just over 79 years. But how can you make those healthy, happy years? Dan Buettner, founder of the Blue Zones philosophy and research, has a few tips. In fact, Buettner, a National Geographic fellow and explorer as well as an Emmy Award-winning journalist and producer, has written five best-selling books on the topic. The Blue Zones idea is less about research and more about a dynamic lifestyle. It is based on Buettner's findings after visiting the five Blue Zones across the world—which are regions with the highest concentration of residents who reach their 100th birthdays. His work touches on everything from what's on your plate to how you socialize and environmental factors that might impact your lifestyle. (For more on that, check out what one writer discovered after trying the Blue Zones lifestyle for three weeks.) While some ideas might seem big and abstract, Buettner breaks down several small, actionable steps you can take every day in his book The Blue Zones Solution: Eating and Living Like the World's Healthiest People. CAIRO, Oct 24 (Reuters) - At least 17 Palestinians, including children, were killed on Thursday in an Israeli strike on a school in Nuseirat camp in the central part of the Gaza Strip, where people displaced by the fighting were sheltering, Nuseirat's Al-Awda hospital said. The Israeli military said it had hit a Hamas command and control centre embedded in a compound formerly used as a school in Nuseirat. Hopes that the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar might provide an opening for an end to the fighting have so far been disappointed despite an international chorus urging Israel to use the opportunity. In the northern section of the enclave, where the area around the town of Jabalia has been the target of a weeks-long operation, the military said it had evacuated large numbers of people and detained more than 200 suspected militants. "Instead of achieving a ceasefire, war has restarted in northern Gaza. We are being besieged, starved, and hunted by the occupation from the air and from tanks," one Jabalia resident told Reuters via a chat app. On Thursday, medics at the Indonesian Hospital, one of three facilities still operating in the area, said one of their colleagues was killed by Israeli fire and another detained on his way to work. Health officials at the three hospitals, which say they have run out of medical, food and fuel supplies, refused Israeli orders to evacuate the facilities or leave patients unattended. Aftermath of Israeli strike on a school sheltering displaced people, in Nuseirat in the central Gaza Strip Palestinians inspect the site of an Israeli strike on a school sheltering displaced people, amid the Israel-Hamas conflict, in Nuseirat in the central Gaza Strip October 24, 2024.... Purchase Licensing Rights, opens new tab Read more The Civil Emergency Service said Israeli attacks on their staff caused a suspension in their operations. Three of their men were wounded and another five were arrested by the army while their only fire truck was bombed by a tank. Speaking at a new conference on Thursday, the rescue service spokesman said people in those areas had been left "without humanitarian, medical or rescue services". The operation in the north has fuelled fears among Palestinians that Israeli forces are clearing the area in order to create an uninhabited buffer zone for the military after the war or to pave the way for the return of settlers who pulled out of Gaza in 2005. Israel has denied such plans and accuses Hamas of hindering the evacuation of civilians to provide cover for its own forces, which Hamas, in turn, denies. As the war moves into its second year, the death toll from the Israeli campaign in Gaza is approaching 43,000, with the densely po[CENSORED]ted enclave in ruins and almost all of its po[CENSORED]tion displaced. Israel, which launched the campaign in retaliation for the Hamas-led attack on Israel last year which killed some 1,200 people and saw more than 250 hostages taken to Gaza, has said it will continue until Hamas is dismantled completely as a military and governing power and the hostages return. But it has not articulated any clear plan for Gaza's future after the war and international efforts to agree a ceasefire appear to have stalled. Hamas, which has yet to name a successsor to Sinwar, said delegations were visiting Turkey, Qatar and Russia as well as being in touch with Egypt, the United Nations and Iran. North Carolina State quarterback Grayson McCall is retiring from football, he announced Wednesday after sustaining a head injury during a game earlier this month. The 23-year-old was carted off the field during N.C. State's Oct. 5 game against Wake Forest after two defenders hit him as he scrambled during the first quarter. During the hit, his helmet came off and he lost control of the ball, then laid on the ground as a defender returned the fumble nearly the entire length of the field. "I have battled injuries my whole career, but this is one that I cannot come back from," McCall wrote in a post on his Instagram. "Brain specialists, my family, and I have come to the conclusion that it is in my best interest to hang the cleats up," he continued. "I have done everything I can to continue, but this is where the good Lord has called me to serve in a different space." McCall's October concussion was his second already this season; he had missed two September games due to an injury sustained on Sept. 14 in a game against Louisiana Tech. Yeah, I know, it seems way too early for a remaster of The Last of Us Part II. The game originally launched on the PS4 in 2020 and has already received an update for those playing on the PS5. It’s not like Ellie, Joel, and Abby need much of an update for modern audiences. But while the slightly enhanced graphics — which include native 4K support and improved frame rates — are nice, they’re not really the reason to play The Last of Us Part II Remastered. Instead, it’s all of the other stuff that turns this into an excellent special edition of the game. Some of the additions are relatively small. There’s a guitar mode where you can, well, play guitar as much as you want. Using the PlayStation controller’s touchpad to swipe guitar strings was one of the highlights of the original release, and it’s nice to be able to mess around with it freely. I’m sure we’ll see some very cool videos of people rocking out soon. You can also unlock outfits to wear while playing the main game, which is silly but fun. I’m 10 hours deep into a New Game Plus run, and Ellie has been wearing a Death Stranding T-shirt the entire time (even though that game couldn’t exist in TLOU’s timeline). Silent Hill: Ascension | Silent Hill Wiki | Fandom Silent Hill: Ascension is an interactive horror television series set in the universe of the Silent Hill video game franchise. It was developed by Genvid Technologies and Behaviour Interactive in collaboration with rightsholder Konami Digital Entertainment. Bad Robot Games provided the art direction, sound design, and creature design, and Senscape contributed to the cinematics. The series follows an ensemble cast from around the world being tormented by manifestations of their trauma in the wake of recent murders, threatening to consume their children. Silent Hill producer Motoi Okamoto wanted to expand the franchise outside of the titular town, with the goal of making it synonymous with the psychological horror genre as opposed to a location. Stephan Bugaj developed the core story with Shanon Ingles and her interactive narrative studio Martian Brothel, who led the writing staff. Nearly twenty hours of footage were produced, including alternate versions of major scenes, allowing for different outcomes and narrative branches.[2] The plot is directed by viewer participation on the official site and mobile app in the week before an episode airs. Konami was interested in the project due to the unique technical premise and worldwide streaming platform, which they hoped would attract audience members to the video games. The interactive component premiered on October 31, 2023. Console applications were initially planned but cancelled due to software incompatibility. The television series is distributed through video on demand, Sony Pictures Core, and Tubi.

It delivers excellent performance, especially on the graphics front with its new Arc integrated GPU. We also give it high marks for its aluminum chassis, bright touch screen, and much-improved keyboard, but noticeable fan noise puts a damper on things, along with weak speakers and excessive bloatware. Our top ultraportable for most buyers remains the Asus ZenBook 14 OLED, but this Acer is still worth considering for the above-average processing power provided by its new Intel chip. VP9 is an open-source and royalty-free video codec developed by Google, designed to address the growing demand for high-quality video delivery across web and mobile platforms. In this blog, we'll delve into the intricacies of VP9, its features, history, and how it stacks up against other po[CENSORED]r codecs. A few key points about VP9: VP9 is the successor to VP8, another video codec, and it competes primarily with MPEG’s High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC/H.265). VP9 emerged from technology acquired when Google purchased On2 Technologies in February 2010. Initially, VP9 found its home on YouTube, where it was widely used for video playback. Another early adopter was Wikipedia for its multimedia content. The emergence of the Alliance for Open Media (of which Google is a part) and their support for the successor codec AV1 sparked growing interest in VP9. Unlike HEVC, VP9 enjoys common support among modern web browsers, making it a po[CENSORED]r choice for online video content. Android has supported VP9 since version 4.4 KitKat, and iOS/iPadOS added VP9 support in iOS/iPadOS 14. Virtually all browsers support VP9, trailing slightly behind H.264. Key features of VP9: Compression efficiency: VP9 is highly efficient in compressing video, offering a significant improvement over VP8 and competing well with H.265/HEVC. It can reduce the bitrate by up to 50% compared to VP8, making it ideal for streaming high-resolution video. Quality: Despite the high compression ratio, VP9 maintains impressive video quality. It supports higher resolutions, including 4K and beyond, with additional support for 10/12-bit encoding and HDR, making it future-proof for emerging video technologies. Open and Royalty-Free: VP9 is an open format, meaning it doesn’t come with licensing fees or restrictions. Compatibility: As a web-centric codec, VP9 has strong support in modern web browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and others. It is also supported on various hardware platforms, including many smartphones and streaming devices. Hardware integration: Google has collaborated with hardware vendors to ensure VP9 support in silicon. However, it is limited to hardware accelerated decoding only, hardware encoding has never really taken off. Everything you need to know about VP9 codec

Overview In recent years, BMW's standard models have given up some of the brand's driving verve in favor of a more luxurious and tech-forward experience. That includes the mid-size X5 SUV. The X5 is offered with either a turbo inline-six, a twin-turbo V-8, or a plug-in hybrid powertrain, all of which provide plentiful power and impressive straight-line performance. The X5's handling is playful although not as sporty as rivals such as the Porsche Cayenne, and its ride is pleasant but not as plush as the Genesis GV80's. Where the BMW impresses most is in its technology offerings, which include a cutting-edge infotainment system with a cool-looking curved dashboard display. Driver-assistance features are also offered, and the optional Highway Assist feature allows for hands-free driving on long highway slogs. Overall, the X5 is a satisfying luxury SUV that's handsomely appointed and pleasant to drive. For something with a more style, consider the fastback X6 or, for serious power and performance, there's the X5 M—both reviewed separately. 2025 BMW X5 Review, Pricing, and Specs

Nature can be a pretty harsh place. You have to fight for your territory, stand up to predators, even if they are ten times your size. And you have to be fearless. And this turtle definitely was. It's not something you see every day - a teeny-weeny turtle standing up to two enormous lions. You'd worry that, oh no, this will end in catastrophe, but amazingly, not only does nothing bad happen to the turtle, but it also managed to chase the lions away from its waterhole. Maybe it's because lions are just large kittens in disguise, and they're nicer than they seem. Maybe it's because they know how resilient turtles are and that turtles can easily outlive them in the wild. Or maybe, it's because cats of all sizes know, through the experience of their own species, that one of the fiercest wild cats in the world is a tiny kitten, so tiny doesn't mean not ferocious. China will start to impose provisional anti-dumping measures on brandy products imported from the European Union this week, a notice from the Ministry of Commerce showed Tuesday, days after the bloc voted to press ahead with tariffs on China-made electric vehicles. Chinese customs officials will collect security deposits from companies that sell brandy originating from the bloc beginning this Friday. The deposit amount would be between 30.6% to 39% of the total value, the notice said. The decision reversed a preliminary ruling in late August, when China said it would not impose any anti-dumping measures, despite concluding that European distillers had been selling brandy in China at a 30.6% to 39% margin. “The relevant brandy industry within China has been substantially damaged or threatened,” the statement read. Tuesday’s move came after the European Union voted on Friday to adopt definitive tariffs of up to 45% on China-made electric vehicles. The additional tariff, which could be as high as 35%, would come on top of the existing 10% rate. China is “strongly dissatisfied” with the EU’s adoption of the anti-subsidy duties on Chinese electric vehicles, a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said in a statement on Friday, calling it a protectionist act that’s “unfair, non-compliant and unreasonable.” China launched the anti-dumping investigation on brandy imported from the European Union in January. European impact The measures come amid a downturn in Chinese imports of cognac and brandy, with August volumes down 40% year-on-year, according to UBS’ “spirit tracker.” The European Commission said it will challenge Beijing’s provisional imposition of measures at the level of the World Trade Organization. “We believe that these measures are unfounded, and we are determined to defend EU industry against the abuse of trade defence instruments,” said the European Commission’s Olof Gill, spokesperson for trade and agriculture, in an emailed statement. Beijing’s Tuesday announcement “seems to be a retaliatory measure following the (EU) Commission’s investigation into electric vehicles,” French Trade Minister Sophie Primas said, according to Reuters. “Such a retaliatory measure would be unacceptable, and in total contradiction with international trade rules,” she added, noting that France will collaborate with the European Union to protest against the Chinese decision. The latest measure from Beijing weighed on the stock of European spirit-makers, with shares of Pernod Ricard down 3.69% at 11:58 a.m. London time, while Remy Cointreau shed 8.34%. Luxury conglomerate LVMH — which produces high-end cognac through its Moet Hennessy brand — was 3.57% lower. China takes swing at European Union with brandy duties after EV tariff vote

A trove of 2,584 silver coins from the time of the Norman Conquest has been bought in the United Kingdom for more than $5 million — making it the country's highest-value discovery ever made by treasure hunters. Adam Staples and Lisa Grace found the bulk of the coins, estimated to be from the years 1066-68, in January 2019 alongside five other amateur metal detectorists in the Chew Valley area, 11 miles south of the city of Bristol. Staples said he and the other detectorists were proud to have found such a significant piece of history. The proceeds, he said, will be split with the landowner. The coins were purchased by the U.K.’s Southwest Heritage Trust, an independent organization that supports historical sites, with funding from two charities, the National Lottery and the Art Fund. Silver coins from 11th century sell for more than $5 million in U.K.
