  1. The Isuzu VehiCROSS is a compact SUV from Isuzu. Produced from 1997 through 2001 (Japanese market 1997–1999; US market 1999–2001), it shares many of its components with the Trooper, including both its 3.2 L and 3.5 L V6 engine that produces 215 bhp (160 kW; 218 PS) at 5400 rpm and 230 lb⋅ft (312 N⋅m) of torque at 3000 rpm. The vehicle also features the Torque on Demand (TOD) 4-wheel-drive system produced by BorgWarner. It is a small, sporty 2-door crossover vehicle with aggressive external styling, including short overhangs, an aggressive forward stance, titanium "teeth" in the grille, a black hood-insert, and black plastic cladding over the entire lower half of the vehicle. The US VehiCROSS came equipped with 16" polished wheels in 1999 and 18" chrome wheels during the remainder of production. The Japanese version came equipped with 16" alloys with chrome center caps. The VehiCROSS combined a computer-controlled AWD system for on-road driving and a low-gear 4WD system for off-road driving. The Japanese version offered a 2WD non TOD or 4WD TOD option. The US-only constant 4WD TOD, with 12 independent sensors for detecting wheel spin and capable of redirecting power to the wheels with the most traction, gives the VehiCROSS a high level of traction on wet and icy roads. It also has a high level of performance for its height. While possessing on-road nimbleness, its body-on-frame truck construction, suspension and 4WD gearing make it very capable off-road. Sales were intentionally limited, with only 5,958 vehicles being produced between 1997 and 2001; 1,805 were produced for the domestic Japanese market and the remaining 4,153 sold in the United States. It appears that Isuzu revisited a limited production approach they used in the mid-1960s with the dramatic 117 Coupe and the later Isuzu Piazza to produce an exclusive two door vehicle.[1] Isuzu VehiCROSS - Wikipedia
  2. The Legon Centre for Education Research and Policy (LECERP), in the College of Education, University of Ghana, has partnered with the Internet Society Foundation (ISOC) and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to launch a groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming teacher development and enhancing student learning in Ghana. The project, titled “Leveraging Internet Access for Teacher Professional Development and Improved Student Learning Outcomes in Ghana,” was officially launched at the Smart Classroom of the School of Continuing and Distance Education. In his opening remarks, Professor Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe, Provost of the College of Education and chairperson for the ceremony, expressed gratitude to ISOC for funding the project. He highlighted the project’s alignment with priorities 3, 4, and 5 of the University of Ghana strategic plan, which focus on commitment to faculty and staff, engagement and partnerships and sustainable resource mobilisation and stewardship. Prof. Codjoe pointed out the transformative potential of this project for Ghana’s educational landscape, noting its promise for significant improvements in teaching quality, student learning outcomes and teacher retention. Dr. Hayford Ayerakwa, the Principal Investigator for the project, outlined the project's objectives, structure and expected impact. He explained that the initiative primarily targets basic schools with plans to expand to senior high schools, aiming to enhance core teaching competencies. "The initiative also aligns with the objectives of Ghana’s new curriculum, which aims to promote critical thinking, prepare students for the global economy and improve overall learning outcomes” he remarked. To achieve its objectives, Dr. Hayford Ayerakwa explained, the project will support teacher professional development by enhancing digital teaching skills, boosting internet connectivity and providing coaching, monitoring and overall capacity building for teachers. He acknowledged a number of potential challenges, including internet accessibility, resistance to change, sustaining long-term engagement and ensuring effective monitoring and evaluation. Dr. Ayerakwa stressed the importance of addressing these issues to maximise the project’s impact on teaching quality and student learning outcomes. 3. Amid the collapse of Germany's coalition government, businesses are demanding Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his cabinet take urgent action to foster growth. How can the government get Germany's ailing economy back on track? Since Wednesday evening, Germany's three party coalition government of Social Democrats (SPD), the Greens and the liberal Free Democrats (FDP) is history. The collapse ocurred when Chancellor Olaf Scholz sacked Finance Minister Christian Lindner, from the FDP, prompting other liberals to step down from the cabinet. Last week, an 18-page so-called position paper of Lindner's was leaked to the public. In it he advocated for a moratorium on regulations and tax cuts, abolishing a solidarity surcharge in income tax for high-earners, and pushing back climate targets to 2050. Most significantly, Lindner vehemently opposed suspending a constitutional ban on excessive borrowing — Germany's debt brake — to plug a roughly €10 billion ($10.7 billion) hole in the federal budget for 2025. He also proposed to dissolve the Germany's climate fund, with which the government is financing its green transition projects. Lindner's paper, titled "Economic transition for Germany — economic concepts for growth and inter-generational fairness," sparked outcry from coalition government partners, who immediately refused to support these measures. The SPD's co-chairman, Lars Klingbeil, on Sunday described the document on Germany's ARD broadcaster as "nothing more than neoliberal ideology." Felix Banaszak, the Greens designated co-chairman, told ARD: "This whole document breathes the spirit of 'I actually don't want to do this anymore'." Banaszak added that reversing agreed-upon government decisions is "the opposite of providing planning certainty." German government crisis: Businesses demand economic fixes – DW – 11/07/2024
  4. Autumn Nations Series: England v Australia Venue: Allianz Stadium, Twickenham Date: Saturday, 9 November Kick-off: 15:10 GMT Coverage: Listen to live commentary on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds, follow live text commentary on the BBC Sport website and app. The soft centre of a southern hemisphere sandwich. That is how Saturday’s encounter with Australia appeared when England revealed their 2024 autumn fixtures. Between ever-competitive New Zealand and world champions South Africa, England play an Australia team they have beaten in 10 of their previous 11 meetings - a run stretching back to 2016. More recent form doesn't challenge the perception either. Australia have lost five of their last six matches. They finished bottom of the Rugby Championship. Last year's Rugby World Cup campaign ended in a miserable pool-stage exit. They are ranked ninth in the world, below Italy and a smidge above Fiji. The current crop of Wallabies are certainly short of bounce. They can, however, still box. Canny coaches, blockbuster talent and a cherished underdog status give the tourists a puncher's chance at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham on Saturday. And, given their wobbly form, England are certainly not invulnerable to an upset. Steve Borthwick's side themselves have only one win - a comfortable cruise past Japan - from their last five fixtures. Several times in that run, they have been locked on for the winners' enclosure, only to veer into the rails in the final quarter. Their ability to fade faster than a boil wash is stark. Among the top 10 teams in the world this year, none have scored more points than the 77 England have chalked up between 40 minutes and 60 minutes in matches. But, contrastingly, none have scored fewer than the 35 they have managed from the hour mark to full-time. England have a points difference of 47 from 40-60 minutes in matches this year. They are minus 23 from the final quarter. The way that an eight-point lead evaporated late on against All Blacks last weekend swung the spotlight onto England’s bench. Replacement fly-half George Ford missed two potentially match-winning shots. Scrum-half Harry Randall struggled to connect with his team-mates. The rejigged forwards went into retreat. Borthwick has made changes in the hope his finishers can match up to the job description. All-brawn Luke Cowan-Dickie comes into the squad in place of all-court Theo Dan. The six-two split on the bench between forwards and backs has been abandoned in favour of a more conventional five-three split, meaning the pack won't be shuffled as dramatically in the closing stages. The only change to the starting XV is a positional switch in midfield, with Ollie Lawrence swapping to outside centre and Henry Slade coming inside to 12. The theory is that it should enable Lawrence - restricted to two carries against New Zealand - to get the ball in more space. However, the revival of a dual playmaker shape that worked fitfully under Eddie Jones has potential weaknesses. Slade will have to lead the backline defence from a different perspective, clocking dangers both inside and outside. Just back from shoulder surgery, he is also placed in the high-traffic lane where Lawrence made 27 tackles against the All Blacks. Len Ikitau - Australia's hard-running inside centre - is sure to test Slade early. On the other side of the ball, England certainly need something to spark their attack. Against New Zealand, they were heavy on perspiration, but light on inspiration. England's solitary try came from a smart Marcus Smith intercept of a ponderous pass, but they rarely looked as if they could pick a way though the defence via their own wit. Among the world’s top 10 nations, only Wales have been less efficient in turning entries into the 22 into points this year. England have some fine attacking talents. But, whether it is the system or individuals within it, potential has not been cashed in as points. If it had, their last four defeats - all by a converted score or less - could have been very different. England's repeated failure to get over the horizon and out of sight will give 5-1 outsiders Australia hope. The instant installation of Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii in the backline will add to it, even if the weight of expectation will surely sit heavy on the 21-year-old. An age-grade phenomenon, Suaalii has been brought back to union from rugby league in a statement move aimed at galvanising a team and reinvigorating a sport. For all the dollar signs and headlines though, his first game of union since his school days will come at Test level, with unfamiliar team-mates alongside him and 80,000 fans in front of him. Head coach Joe Schmidt admitted picking Suaalii is a gamble, and that it was one that might not pay off immediately. "If not now, when?" said the New Zealander. "I think it makes some sense for him to play. It's unlikely it'll go perfectly, but it will be a benchmark that he can build from." Angus Bell and Taniela Tupou are formidable foundations and the props will relish the chance to get at England at the set-piece. The back row of Harry Wilson, Rob Valetini and Fraser McReight have been star performers. Twenty-year-old wing Max Jorgensen, who starts on the bench, was almost as highly hyped as Suaalii coming up through school. Perhaps most importantly, Schmidt, who sculpted Ireland's intricate patterns between 2013 and 2019, is in the stands. His steady hand is even more critical than Suaalii's stardust in Australia's revival. So far under him improvement has been incremental. Victory over England would be a dramatic break-out success. It would also send Steve Borthwick's men plunging in the opposite direction before the visit of the Springboks. For all Australia's points of promise, it is a game England should win. But, as the Twickenham regulars can attest, there have been plenty of those. And, once the final whistle had blown, markedly fewer victories. 5. Rohit Bose Roy has been ageing like fine wine. While fitness, diet, and good mental health play a role, he gives a lot of credit to Vipassana. “In 2014, I went for Vipassana, and my mind changed. My mind is filled with so much information at any given point in time. There is so much going on. We take a lot of time to sleep because of responsibilities and a cluttered mind. But 15 minutes of Vipassana at night before sleep, and I knock out like a baby. It’s life-altering,” Roy told actor Barkha Bisht and model Ankita Kukreti on the Unstoppable podcast. Dr Haricharan G, senior consultant physician, HoD, internal medicine, Gleneagles Hospitals, Lakdi Ka Pul, Hyderabad, agreed that breathing exercises and meditation promote relaxation and mental clarity, reducing stress and anxiety. Yoga expert Mansi Gulati added that Vipassana before bed may help one get some rest, especially if they have trouble falling asleep at night. “Practicing Vipassana meditation regularly can help us relax, de-stress, unwind, and enhance the quality and length of sleep by lowering worry, anxiety, and chronic pain,” said Gulati. The parasympathetic nervous system produces melatonin, a hormone that encourages drowsiness. When the body experiences a relaxation response during Vipassana, it helps one fall asleep quicker and have deeper, more peaceful sleep because melatonin production peaks approximately an hour before we go to sleep, said Dr Gude. Meditation increases resilience by removing the negative self-talk that frequently obscures our genuine selves and reinforces a poor self-image, emphasised Gulati. “In your practice, you can feel more alive and alert, automatically increasing your confidence. This makes you feel better about yourself and increases your sense of self-worth,” expressed Gulati. 7. On Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at approximately 1 PM, the Yemassee Police Department was notified by Alpha Genesis, a primate research facility, about the escape of 43 young rhesus macaque monkeys. Situated at 95 Castle Hall Rd. in Yemassee, SC, the facility confirmed that the escaped primates are all young females, each weighing between six to seven pounds. A spokesperson from Alpha Genesis reassured the public that the monkeys had never been subjected to testing due to their young age and size. However, their escape highlights a significant and concerning issue: animal research. Although these primates have not yet been used in experiments, their future prospects are grim as they grow older. Rhesus macaques are among the most frequently utilized animals in laboratory testing, often enduring extreme suffering in the name of scientific research. “We are deeply concerned for the welfare of the 43 monkeys who have reportedly escaped from the Alpha Genesis facility in South Carolina. The monkeys are vulnerable, with no experience of living outside of their restricted and inadequate captive environment. As wild animals, they also pose a risk to humans, with a particular threat of zoonotic disease spread,” said Angela Grimes, CEO of Born Free USA. “We have reached out to Alpha Genesis today to invite them to work with us to rehome the monkeys to the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary, where they can live out their days in safety,” continued Grimes. “We await their response and encourage them to make the right decision to allow these monkeys a second chance at life, away from harm and exploitation. We invite those who share our concerns to reach out to Alpha Genesis to ask them to support our urgent proposal.” In laboratories, monkeys are often subjected to painful procedures, confined to small cages, and deprived of their natural environments. They experience extreme stress, both physically and mentally, with many displaying signs of trauma and psychological distress. Even those deemed “too young” for testing are kept in captivity under conditions that deny them the ability to live as the intelligent, social creatures they are. Their escape offers a glimpse of the desperation these animals face, longing for freedom from the cages they’ve known all their lives. The Yemassee Police Department advised the public to avoid the area to prevent hindering the search for the escaped monkeys. Alpha Genesis is attempting to lure the monkeys back with food, but the question remains: once captured, will they face a life of testing or is there a better path forward? This incident should serve as a wake-up call. Instead of returning these young, innocent animals to a life of captivity and inevitable suffering, we must push for their transfer to the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary! 43 Monkeys Escape Animal Testing Facility In South Carolina: Urge Their Safe Transfer To Born Free’s Sanctuary - World Animal News
