According to the UK government’s Insolvency Service, over 4,200 construction companies have gone bankrupt in the past year, making it the worst-performing sector. As labour, materials, and energy costs fluctuate, small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the most vulnerable. As SMEs are more exposed to consumer demand and often wait a long time for payment from those higher up the supply chain, it is easy to see why the volume of their business failures is at its highest level in over a decade. How construction software can help According to James Chambers, director of global industry development for the Build and Construct Division at Nemetschek, SMEs must look for ways to work more effectively to survive in this climate. He says construction software can help: “The use of construction-focused software has increased in the last few years. While the pandemic was undoubtedly a trigger point for many, investment has not slowed. “Many more solutions are on the market than a few years ago, suitable for all business sizes. Years ago, people used to think digitalisation was out of reach because of the cost of purchasing solutions and the perceived implementation challenges.” “Now, solutions are more accessible, and many companies realise they can improve their margins and deliver better project outcomes without breaking the bank.” Transforming construction businesses with software Chambers adds that these tools can be transformative no matter how companies implement them. That said, he cautions that businesses develop a detailed use case first: “Before making an investment in software, leaders should look at what the business needs at both the project level and operational level. “Understanding the way that people work, the tools available on the market, and the key improvements that you want to achieve, the likelihood of choosing the right software and implementing it properly is much higher. “Whether starting with a small step, using software that tackles one problem at a time, or overhauling the business from top to bottom, I think businesses will be able to find something that helps.” He explains that companies often look to improve financial management, de-risk projects, and boost collaboration when starting out with construction software. While all are useful, he argues that anything that helps with finance should come first. “Tools can monitor cashflow easily and flag any danger areas, such as late payments or increases in costs,” he says. “Cash is king, so removing analogue processes and improving data capture and analysis here will make a big difference to business owners and senior teams.” Remove risk by bringing people together After finance, Chambers suggests that tools that drive effective communication should be next: “One way to reduce mistakes and avoid costly rework or delays is through effective communication between the project team and the client. “Software can help here, too. Take capturing customer requirements. A consistent workflow ensures the client’s desired outcomes and expectations are fully understood and easy to share among the full project team. That reduces the chances of any surprises during the project. “Combining this with cloud-based tools allows real-time collaboration on documents, whether on-site or in an office. With activities like design changes and updates logged in real-time, you are never more than a click away from the latest project information.” Bluebeam and CIOB team up on guide To help SMEs understand how to adopt construction software, Bluebeam has partnered with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) to write a technical guide, Digital Transformation for SMEs: Unlocking the Benefits. It outlines a step-by-step process for adopting technology, including where software can improve or replace processes, finding the best solution, and successfully rolling out new software tools. It also includes case studies from SME contractors who have adopted new software tools and seen huge improvements in their business. Chambers concludes: “If you are just starting out, I recommend that companies choose quick and easy tools to adopt, bringing people together and delivering recognisable gains as quickly as possible. “The important thing is to ensure that a high return on investment can be achieved and that those wins can be shared internally. This tends to help adoption, lays the groundwork for future additions, and ensures that the full benefits of the software can be realised. “By helping people to be more efficient and bringing up-to-date and accurate information to the forefront, businesses can improve their performance significantly and make themselves more robust and futureproof.” Digital Transformation for SMEs:https://www.pbctoday.co.uk/news/digital-construction-news/construction-technology-news/ciob-and-bluebeam-team-up-to-help-smes-adopt-construction-software/134911/

The government on Saturday said 27 companies, including Dell, HP, Flextronics, and Foxconn, have been granted approval under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for IT hardware. The scheme, which covers laptops, tablets, PCs, servers and ultra-small form factor devices, is expected to fuel incremental investments of about Rs 3,000 crore. "India is poised for a revolutionary leap in IT hardware manufacturing," industry body MAIT said on this annoucement. "MAIT envisions this as a game-changer for IT hardware manufacturing. With unwavering confidence, we anticipate India's ascent to a leadership position in the manufacturing and export of products such as laptops, tablets, servers...mirroring the transformative success witnessed in the Indian mobile phone industry," Suhail Zaidi Director General of MAIT said.Sanjay Lodha, Chairman and Managing Director of Netweb Technologies, said the company is "honoured to be recognised in the PLI scheme". "Excelling in the initial phase of PLI 1.0, by surpassing targets twofold, we are now gearing up for PLI 2.0 with increased incentives, anticipating even greater success. This strategic initiative serves as a catalyst, propelling Netweb towards heightened innovation and a more extensive product portfolio," Lodha said. The nod to the applicants comes at a time when India is wooing IT hardware players with policy sweeteners and incentive schemes, making a determined push to position itself as a global powerhouse for hi-tech manufacturing."I am happy to announce that 27 companies have been approved for the PLI IT hardware scheme. About 95 per cent of these...23 companies are ready to start their manufacturing from day-zero," Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw said at a briefing. Four companies will start their production in the next 90 days. "These 27 applications will lead to investments of about Rs 3,000 crore...The most important thing is that the value chain is shifting to India," the minister said. The approvals will position India as a big force in manufacturing of IT hardware, encompassing PCs, servers, laptops, and tablets, Vaishnaw said. https://www.business-standard.com/industry/news/27-firms-granted-approval-under-new-it-hardware-pli-scheme-vaishnaw-123111800430_1.html

At this year's BlizzCon event, Blizzard revealed a formidable new endgame event coming to Diablo 4 called the Abbatoir of Zir. Set to go live on December 5 as part of patch 1.2.3, this event sees players tackling a set of dungeons designed to push your character to the limit, offering "permanent and evergreen endgame challenges." The challenging nature of Abbatoir of Zir was reiterated by po[CENSORED]r Diablo 4 streamer Wudijo, who visited Blizzard to check out the endgame event. According to Wudijo, Abbatoir of Zir is difficult to the point that "you're not really supposed to finish the last tier". Wudijo made the comment in his video preview of Abbatoir of Zir, and to be clear, he meant it mainly in a positive light. "Previously, people were complaining that, at least on the higher end, the game was too easy, there's not really much to grind for," he says near the start of the video. "The Abbatoir of Zir is going to change that."Going forward, he states, "This is going to be some extremely high-end content," specifically "post Tier-100 Nightmare dungeon content". Comparing Abbatoir of Zir to the Greater Rifts seen in Diablo 3, Wudijo says that Abbatoir of Zir's difficulty scales up incredibly quickly. "It's not like Nightmare Dungeon tiers where you're going like 10 tiers higher [and it] doesn't make much of a difference. The scaling is incredible in that system. And as far as I'm aware, you're not really supposed to finish the last tier." https://www.pcgamer.com/po[CENSORED]r-diablo-4-streamer-reckons-youre-not-really-supposed-to-finish-the-last-tier-of-the-upcoming-abbatoir-of-zir-event/

ith a full-blown war unfolding between Israel and Hamas, it’s hard to imagine a new dawn of peace. The body count in Gaza is rising daily, a month after Hamas stormed southern Israel, killing 1,400 people and taking hundreds more hostage. It’s a cycle of violence that threatens to paralyze the moral and political imaginations of Israelis and Palestinians alike, deepening the impression that an accommodation will remain forever out of reach. But to hear one of Israel’s elder statesmen tell it, now is precisely the moment to resurrect the goal of a renewed peace process.“I think there is a need in Israel, under the heaviest, most difficult conditions, never to lose sight of the objective,” former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak tells TIME. “The right way is to look to the two-state solution, not because of justice to the Palestinians, which is not the uppermost on my priorities, but because we have a compelling imperative to disengage from the Palestinians to protect our own security, our own future, our own identity.” Put another way: As Israel embarks on what many suspect will be its longest, most devastating war, it should be preparing to make painful concessions once it’s over. Otherwise, Barak warns, Israel will lose legitimacy in the eyes of the international community. It won’t be able to corral the Arab countries that could help reconstruct Gaza. And it will remain haunted by an existential crisis that threatens the nation’s character as a Jewish democracy. For Barak, who was Prime Minister from 1999 to 2001 and Defense Minister from 2007 to 2013, it’s personal. In Israel’s 75-year history, no Israeli leader came closer to securing a peace deal with the Palestinians. Through a series of negotiations in 2000, brokered by President Bill Clinton, Barak made Israel’s first ever offer to establish a Palestinian state. The proposal included roughly 97 percent of the West Bank; all of Gaza, where Israel still had settlers; and a capital in East Jerusalem. “It was historic,” Clinton wrote in his memoirs. “The ball was in Arafat’s court.” https://time.com/6332127/israel-palestine-war-ehud-barak/

The fate of more than 250 rabbits, guinea pigs and rats remains unknown more than three months after they were sent to a humane society in Arizona. When the San Diego Humane Society in California shipped more than 300 rabbits, guinea pigs and rats to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona in Tucson over the summer, it believed that they would be adopted as pets. But most of the animals may have met a grislier fate, which has led to outrage, anguish and a police investigation. According to officials at both humane societies, the 323 animals arrived in Tucson on Aug. 7 but were not taken into the shelter there. Instead, the Humane Society of Southern Arizona transferred the animals to a man named Colten Jones, who runs a business in the Phoenix area called the Fertile Turtle, which sells live and frozen animals for reptile feed, both humane societies said inOfficials at both humane societies said they were investigating who arranged the transfer and what, exactly, had happened to the animals. The police said that they were also investigating the case as a “possible fraud” but that no one had been charged. But a piece of possible evidence about the fate of the animals emerged this month when a Tucson news station, KVOA, reported on a text message that Mr. Jones sent on Aug. 8, a day after the animals arrived in Tucson. “Do you have the ability to freeze off a bunch of guinea pigs and or rabbits?” Mr. Jones wrote to another man, who did not want to be publicly identified, KVOA reported. “I don’t have the manpower or labor to be able to do it in time for the show and it’s too much time for me.” The show apparently referred to an upcoming reptile show in Pomona, Calif., according to KVOA. Mr. Jones did not respond to phone and text messages seeking comment. The Southern Arizona and San Diego humane societies said in their joint statement that they were outraged by “this latest piece of information that clearly indicates Mr. Jones’s intention to use these animals as feed instead of finding them adoptive homes.” https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/21/us/humane-society-san-diego-tucson.html

"Hyundai Motor India is actively working towards achieving its goal of a cumulative yearly production capacity of 1,000,000 units. We plan on achieving this through capacity optimisation at our Sriperumbudur plant and capacity addition through our upcoming Talegaon plant, where production is scheduled to commence from 2025," Kim observed. Talking about enhancing the safety aspect of Hyundai cars, he said: "We also prioritised standardisation of critical safety features in our vehicles, including the inclusion of 3-point seatbelts and seatbelt reminders for all seats across the Hyundai model line-up." "Hyundai also challenged the status quo through proactive introduction of six airbags as standard across all variants across the model line-up," he added. In all, Hyundai sells 13 models in India. Apart from those mentioned above, the others are the Grand i10 Nios, i20, i20 N-Line, Aura and Verna. All 13 Hyundai cars now have six airbags as standard. Hyundai is also planning to equip its entire line-up with advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) in the next three years. Currently, five vehicles -- Venue, Venue N-Line, Verna, Tucson and Ioniq 5 -- of the carmaker boast this technology. https://www.indiatoday.in/auto/latest-auto-news/story/from-exter-to-ioniq-5-there-is-now-a-hyundai-suv-for-everyone-says-md-ceo-unsoo-kim-2465028-2023-11-20

A goal in either half from former Aston Villa midfielder Trezeguet gave Egypt a 2-0 win over nine-man Sierra Leone. Meanwhile, Nigeria drew 1-1 away against Zimbabwe after Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho steered in a second-half equaliser for the visitors. Elsewhere, Algeria and Gabon extended their 100% records, while Sudan registered a shock win over DR Congo. Africa has a guaranteed nine qualifiers for the 2026 finals in Canada, Mexico and the United States, with all group winners booking a spot at the tournament. How does new African World Cup qualifying work? African World Cup qualifying group tables Mane marks 100th cap with double for Senegal Mixed fortunes for big names Egypt had cruised to a 6-0 home win over Djibouti in their Group A opener, with Mohamed Salah scoring four times, and the Liverpool forward had a hand in both Pharaohs goals against Sierra Leone. Mostafa Mohamed flicked on a ball from Salah and Trezeguet was on hand inside the area to chest down and slide home in the 18th minute. Sullay Kaikai almost levelled when he hit the outside of the post but Sierra Leone's task was made harder when Derby County midfielder Tyrese Fornah was shown a straight red card seven minutes before half-time for a high boot on Hamdi Fathi. Trezeguet, who now plays in Turkey for Trabzonspor, made it 2-0 just after the hour mark in Monrovia, Liberia, when he latched on to a through ball from Salah and his effort deflected off a defender before looping in over the goalkeeper. And the Leone Stars finished with nine men when defender Abdul Kabia was shown a second yellow card for a cynical foul on Omar Marmoush deep into injury time. Nigeria were held to a draw by minnows Lesotho in their first game in Group C on Thursday and once again failed to find inspiration in attack against Zimbabwe. The Super Eagles were stunned in the 26th minute in Butare, Rwanda, when Walter Musona sent a brilliant 35-yard free-kick flying past Francis Uzoho and into the top right-hand corner. But the West Africans were almost gifted an equaliser when Zimbabwe goalkeeper Bernard Donovan was penalised for picking up a back pass, but Southampton's Joe Aribo saw his effort from the resulting indirect free-kick cleared off the line. Nigeria did equalise midway through the second half when Iheanacho slid in a cut-back from Moses Simon, but Zimbabwe had the better chances to win it as Teenage Hadebe hooked over, Divine Lunga headed wide and Tanaka Shandirwa blasted off target. Pressure may grow on boss Jose Peseiro with Nigeria on just two points after two games, a point behind Group C leaders South Africa, who travel to https://www.bbc.com/sport/africa/67468591

When researcher, author and explorer Dan Buettner was first developing the concept of the Blue Zones (the five regions in the world where people live the longest), he realized he was missing one thing: a city in the U.S. that made the cut. Determined to find an American region that met the Blue Zones criteria, Buettner and a team of demographers dug deep into data on Loma Linda, a city in San Bernardino County, California, with a po[CENSORED]tion of roughly 24,000 people. Touting the tagline “A city focused on health and prosperity,” Loma Linda is home to one of the largest concentrations of Seventh-day Adventists in the world. It was this religious po[CENSORED]tion that drew Buettner to further investigate the city as a Blue Zone contender. “I found that Seventh-day Adventists lived between seven and 11 years longer than people in its Northern American counterparts,” Buettner tells NBC News BETTER. “The highest concentration of them is in or around Southern California, specifically Loma Linda. I [qualified] it as a Blue Zone namely because these were verifiably the longest lived Americans, given available data in 2005.” Like the other Blue Zones Buettner discovered, Loma Linda excelled in several aspects which contribute to longevity in Buettner’s estimation. “In all five of these zones, the reason they're living long is not because of one special diet or one other thing; they're living longer because of a cluster of mutually supporting factors than enable [residents] to do the right things long enough and avoid doing the wrong things long enough so as to [lower risk] of developing a chronic disease.” https://www.nbcnews.com/better/lifestyle/what-blue-zone-city-loma-linda-california-can-teach-us-ncna989661

Mass Global Energy Rom, subsidiary of Mass Group Holding from Iraq, agreed in August to buy the decommissioned Mintia coal plant in Romania for EUR 91.2 million excluding value-added tax. It completed the acquisition in December. One of the deal’s terms was to build a matching power plant by the end of 2026 with at least 1.29 GW in capacity, of which at least 800 MW has to work on gas and renewables. The company’s representatives just met with Primer Minister Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă and revealed the intention to install a hydrogen-ready gas power plant of a minimum 1.5 GW. The investment is valued at more than EUR 1 billion, his office said. The facility would be the largest and most efficient in the European Union in the gas sector, according to the announcement. Mass Group vows to comply with EU green taxonomy The project is in line with the EU’s so-called green taxonomy, which acknowledges fossil gas as a sustainable energy investment, but only as a transitory solution before the total switch to renewables and nuclear energy. Namely, all new gas projects must be equipped to use hydrogen. The first stage will be completed within 24 months and the power plant is scheduled to be fully up and running one year after that, the press release adds. Romania aims to export electricity “Romania needs to make the most of its gas reserves, and the government has already taken important steps in this regard. Currently, Black Sea gas can already provide ten percent of the annual domestic consumption, and will, in the coming years, turn our country into one of the EU’s largest gas producers,” Ciucă stated and added that the country aims to export electricity to neighboring Moldova and its partners in the European Union. Mass Group Holding is registered in the Cayman Islands. The headquarters are in Amman, Jordan, but most of its business is in Iraq. The company operates power plants and cement, iron and steel production facilities. Mass was the only bidder at the fourth auction for Mintia, when it bought it at the starting price. Mintia is near the city of Deva in southern Transylvania, on the bank of the Mureş river. It was shut down in July 2021, having failed to meet EU environmental standards. Romania plans to quit using coal by 2032. https://balkangreenenergynews.com/iraqi-firm-to-switch-defunct-coal-plant-in-romania-to-gas-hydrogen/

is targeting merchandise exports worth $20 billion (nearly Rs. 1,66,500 crore) from India by 2025 by adding thousands of small sellers to its e-commerce platform, a company official said on Friday. "We are very encouraged by the number of entrepreneurs who signed up this year. We are looking to scale up," Bhupen Wakankar, director global trade, Amazon told Reuters on the sidelines of an industry event, referring to plans for exports. There was huge demand for "Made in India" organic health supplements, homeware like bath towels, jute rugs, and robotic games for children ahead of the Black Friday Cyber Monday sale, an 11-day shopping period from Friday, Wakankar said. Launched in 2015 with a handful of sellers, Amazon Global Trade, the business to consumers (B2C) exports platform of the e-commerce giant, is gaining traction in India. The company has added more than 100,000 small manufacturers to sell a wide range of products to overseas customers, he said. "Some of the sellers are first time exporters, including those who left their corporate jobs to start e-commerce exports," he said. Thousands of small exporters, who earlier lacked access to global markets, have seen 70 percent business growth annually through e-commerce platform, which provided logistics support and access to more than 200 million Amazon Prime members globally, he said. This comes as India's exports of goods declined 7 percent year-on-year during first seven months of this fiscal year. On the e-commerce platform, the highest growth was seen in categories like beauty, apparels, home, kitchen, furniture, and toys.Holidays such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Christmas, and New Year were driving sales of Indian products in markets such as the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia and Germany. To encourage exporters, Wakankar said, Amazon had slashed the subscription fees for its global selling programme from $120 (nearly Rs. 1,000) to $1 (nearly Rs. 84) for the first three months for exporters signing up before March 31.Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 alongside the Galaxy Tab S9 series and Galaxy Watch 6 series at its first Galaxy Unpacked event in South Korea. Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy has been making headlines recently for his comments. Just last month, the tech mogul had triggerred a nationwide debate when he said that youngsters should work for 70 hours every week. And now, Murthy said that becoming a software engineer or financial analyst is "very easy" whereas being an entrepreneur takes a lot of work. He talked about the challenges faced by aspiring entrepreneurs in India, and also acknowledged the government's efforts in fostering the startup ecosystem. In an interview with Moneycontrol, Murthy said that there has to be a broader societal shift in perception and support for risk-takers like young entrepreneurs who are trying to build a business. "We see a surge of entrepreneurs emerging with innovative ideas that were unimaginable just a decade ago," remarked Murthy, who himself embarked on the entrepreneurial journey with Infosys in 1981. He had just six other engineers in his team at the time. Adding that youngsters today are more confident and ambitious, Murthy said that the entrepreneurs of today are eager to tackle complex problems. Murthy then cautioned that this entrepreneurial spirit often faces hurdles from the society and that people need to "embrace entrepreneurship as a demanding path and provide encouragement to those daring to venture into the unknown." The Infosys co-founder then went on to say that "careers like software engineering or financial analysis offer stability, entrepreneurship is a leap of faith with no guarantee of success." He added that thus, entrepreneurship is quite risk-taking that "drives innovation and progress." Talking about how it is easy to become a software engineer or a financial analyst, Murthy said, "While it is very easy to become a software engineer or become a financial analyst, but to become an entrepreneur and say, ‘I will try out this unbelievable idea, which has a low probability.’ That is what we have to do. That is where there's a lot of work that we need to do." Narayana Murthy's 70 hour workweek comment As mentioned above, Murthy found himself embroiled in the middle of a controversy of sorts last month when he said that young people should be prepared to work for 70 hours per week to elevate the nation's work culture and compete effectively on the global stage. Speaking on the inaugural episode of 3one4 Capital's podcast 'The Record,' Murthy talked about the urgency of changing India's work productivity. He argued that unless India's youth commit to significantly more working hours, the country will struggle to catch up with economies that have seen remarkable progress over the past few decades. Murthy's comments didn't go down well with numerous people, who expressed their opinion on LinkedIn. While some people downright disagreed with the Infosys founder and called him out for his comments, others agreed with him to some degree and said that his statement had been twisted too much. Hence, the internet was soon divided between people who were in favour of Murthy and those who were not. https://www.indiatoday.in/technology/news/story/infosys-co-founder-narayana-murthy-says-being-a-software-engineer-is-easy-but-running-a-startup-takes-work-2464050-2023-11-17
