  5. As someone who hadn’t returned to Fallout 76’s post-apocalyptic West Virginia since its troubled debut back in 2018, six years really has made quite the difference. Appalachia looks pretty dang gorgeous on modern systems, its reworked leveling and perks make for an extremely engaging grind, and in stark contrast to the lonely and depressing slog I endured last time, the world is actually filled with interesting NPCs to chat up – you know, like a Fallout game. Throw in all the new quests and activities that have been added, and you’ve got yourself a pretty robust multiplayer adventure filled with gore and silliness. That said, there’s still plenty Fallout 76 misses the mark on in 2024, whether it’s an endgame that’s fairly light on content, underwhelming jaunts into other areas of the Fallout setting, or an encumbrance and storage system that’s so irritating it’s practically a requirement to pay for a monthly subscription that eases the pain. I’ve still overwhelmingly enjoyed my time blasting ghouls into pink, irradiated meat chunks, though, and can easily recommend it to anyone who similarly felt a deep yearning for more Fallout after watching the recent TV show. Fallout 76 Gameplay Screenshots (2024) Like the other 3D Fallout games, Fallout 76 is a goofy first-person shooter RPG where you explore a radioactive wasteland stuffed with disgusting monsters, complete harebrained quests that usually involve shooting and/or dismembering said monsters, and claim loot to fuel your badass survivor’s legend. Fallout 76 mixes up that playful and gory formula by letting your friends join your quest online, which comes with most of the advantages and drawbacks you might expect. A compelling story and the ability to make major decisions that impact it certainly take a backseat, but on the other hand, you get to fight giant, flying gargoyles with your buds while you all sing along to classic bops straight out of 1934. A compelling story and the ability to make major decisions that impact it certainly take a backseat. “ As a vault dweller, you emerge from the titular Vault 76 only 25 years after atomic warfare has left the world in tatters, at which point you are vaguely told to go and rebuild it or something. Instead, you’ll spend most of your time blowing it up even further with grenades, missiles, and even the odd atomic bomb while you run around completing errands foisted upon you by survivors, computer terminals, and constant pop-ups that recommend you do things like “kill the protestors” – typical heroic Fallout stuff. There are definitely some funny gags, wacky characters, and even the occasionally interesting bit of lore along the way, but Fallout 76 largely ditches the focus on story found in its single-player siblings in favor of letting you, your friends, and strangers tell your own stories in a big sandbox filled with ridiculous nonsense. That can be a lot of fun, though, and at least now there are non-robotic NPCs to talk to out in the world to make it feel more alive. (It’s still pretty wild to me that this wasn’t always the case!) https://www.ign.com/articles/fallout-76-review-2024

  8. While there are only three major chip suppliers, AMD, Intel and Nvidia, choosing the best one can still be tough. Here’s everything you need to know, including our picks for best graphics cards. With the right graphics card, your PC experience, whether for gaming, streaming or other creation, can improve tremendously. Although these cards have been out for a few years, they're still cutting-edge when it comes to the top choices in the industry. Optimization technologies that help boost frame rates like Nvidia's DLSS, AMD's FidelityFX and Intel's XeSS tend to only run on the current or sometimes last generation of cards -- those that use Nvidia's Ada Lovelace, AMD's RDNA 3 or Intel's Xe architectures. Prettifying technologies like ray tracing can run substantially better on recent GPUs. Plus, the newer cards have much better video encoding chops for smoother streaming. While you can make initial choices based on specs like the manufacturer, GPU chip, amount and type of video memory, clock speeds, power requirements and other factors, they're imperfect predictors of how any particular model will perform in your games or creative applications. So we've put together some suggestions based on our experience testing and using a big crop of GPUs. In some cases, the card we tested was produced by the GPU company -- Nvidia's Founders Edition models, AMD's reference models and Intel's Limited Edition -- but in those cases we've still made recommendations of third-party cards from add-in board companies like Asus, MSI, Gigabyte and Zotac. Frequently, the "editions" go out of stock and never come back, while the AIB models can hang around for years. It can't be stressed enough that, unlike a lot of products you shop for, GPUs require research based on your particular configuration because there can be real consequences for a bad fit, like system crashes and fried motherboards. There are some blanket caveats for each chipset: Nvidia's newest GPUs require an adapter to work with most power supplies (they're usually bundled), AMD cards have frequent reports of high-pitched whining and Intel's still working out the kinks with its first generation of discrete GPUs. 9. Surprising absolutely no one, Fortnite and Lego snap satisfyingly together like a couple of plastic construction bricks. Combining the building creativity of Lego sets with Fortnite's expansive and often gorgeous island playgrounds is a smart match that creates an approachable yet fairly deep survival game. But while it streamlines a few of the more cumbersome aspects of the genre, Lego Fortnite also has the distinct feel of an early access game, trading as much on its future potential as its currently polished systems. There's a solid foundation here that developer Epic Games will surely build on over time, but Lego Fortnite can feel somewhat empty at launch – what's here is fun, there's just not very much of it. If you're familiar with survival games like Minecraft or Valheim, you'll immediately find yourself at home in Fortnite's riff on the genre, as it uses tried-and-true blueprints rather than starting from scratch. Dropped on a procedurally generated island that's still loosely contained within Fortnite's larger time-loopy fiction, you need to gather food and other resources to keep yourself alive. As you get more materials, you can craft tools and weapons, which let you fight off deadly creatures and gather even better materials, and then make better tools and weapons so you can search for still deadlier creatures and still rarer materials. It's an extremely well-worn track at this point, and Lego Fortnite makes no attempt to lay down its own rails. Instead, it focuses on reducing friction by providing you with a whole bunch of helpful NPCs to lighten the load. While a lot of survival games include cooperative multiplayer, Lego Fortnite makes cooperation its central theme. You can join up with as many as seven other players, but even if you're alone, you'll have NPCs around to take a lot of the pressure off. It's an adjustment that lets Lego Fortnite maintain the trappings of survival while relaxing the burden overall, and at times can lessen the grind that often defines this sort of game – although there's still plenty of grind to go around. From the start in any new game, other characters are hanging around both to offer you tutorial information and to help out. Rather than building random shelter structures to keep yourself alive, you can construct a town square that turns your location into a village that attracts NPC Fortnite characters. Visitors will flow in and out of your village freely and defend it from any enemies that happen by, and you can entice some of them to become permanent residents by advancing through 10 village levels. That gives you something of a workforce almost from the very beginning, and you can assign NPCs to forage for materials or work your different crafting benches, providing you with free resources every so often. It's like always having other players around to help you, freeing you up somewhat to focus on things that are more enticing than standing at a workbench, waiting for food to cook. The Fortnite side of the equation adds some interesting new wrinkles. “ That help makes it a little easier to enjoy on the best part of Lego Fortnite, which is striking out into the world to find new resources to improve your stuff. The Fortnite side of the equation adds some interesting wrinkles here, like a version of the battle royale mode's storm with lightning strikes that will drive you into cover, llamas and supply drops that dispense random loot, and rifts that spawn a little dance party on a cloud into the world, which you can join with your Fortnite emotes. There's not a ton beyond that stuff and some recognizable skins to identify this as a Fortnite spin-off, but the additions still bring some extra flavor to the world and open the door for future possibilities. Combat is the same clunky style as Minecraft or Valheim, where you mostly stand and whack at enemies with a sword between blocking their assaults with a shield, with a dodge roll that gives you a little extra agility when you need it. Lego Fortnite uses NPCs to lower the stakes a bit here, too, as you can recruit any friendly character to explore with you, instantly doubling your odds in a fight. If they die, NPCs respawn a few seconds later barely any worse for wear (although without any of the equipment you gave them). It's an option that maintains the feel of adventuring while lowering the barrier of entry and the risk. https://www.ign.com/articles/lego-fortnite-review
  10. I don't envy the folks at Arrowhead charged with balancing Helldivers 2 guns fans have grown attached to. Arrowhead has rolled out a handful of sweeping balance patches in the game's first few months, all of which I believe made the game better by both buffing guns with untapped potential and, less often, nerfing a weapon that's dominant to the point of being boring. But there's an argument to be made that balancing shouldn't be taken so seriously in a purely PvE shooter like Helldivers 2, and that it's ok if one gun is dealing more damage than the rest. Replying to a player on Twitter who said recent patches have made the game "unplayable," Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt conceded that he's not satisfied with his studio's current balancing approach. "Hey, yeah I think we've gone too far in some areas. Will talk to the team about the approach to balance," he wrote. "It feels like every time someone finds something fun, the fun is removed In a followup tweet, Pilestedt says he's seeing "a bit too much balancing using damage instead of other measures such as recoil, reload speeds, accuracy, projectile speeds and equip speeds. Just tweaking damage numbers is a blunt tool."The exchange was not in reference to any specific nerfs, so it's hard to pin down exactly what Pilestedt has in mind here. The last sweeping balancing patch deployed in late April could be described as 'too many damage tweaks,' but many guns also received non-damage alterations like magazine size, recoil, and recharge time. The Eruptor of it all It's possible Pilestedt is thinking about the main subject of yesterday's 1.000.302 patch, the Eruptor rifle. What's interesting about the Eruptor, a new primary rifle, is that it was nerfed because it was too dangerous for everyone around it. The patch notes read: Increased explosion damage by 40 and removed shrapnel from the explosion: This is to avoid cases in which players would randomly one-shot themselves or their teammates in a huge radius around the explosion Let's zoom out for some context: The Eruptor is a primary gun added in last month's Democratic Detonation warbond. It doesn't fire bullets, but rather micro missiles that deal AoE explosive damage on impact. Until yesterday, impacts would also shoot out waves of "shrapnel" in random directions that dealt additional damage. It's these shrapnel waves, which had a tendency of bouncing toward and instantly killing helldivers, that Arrowhead has removed and replaced with more direct explosive damage. While Helldivers 2 players are accustomed to wielding power guns capable of backfiring when used improperly, the Eruptor's shrapnel crossed a line of inconsistency for Arrowhead—its unpredictable behavior was causing frustrating deaths that, for a few days, had the community convinced there was a larger problem with ricocheting rockets. Clearly something had to be done about the haphazard shrapnel mechanic, but some fans on Discord and Reddit aren't happy with Arrowhead's compromise. Without shrapnel, the post-patch Eruptor has noticeably smaller explosions, and isn't as good at clearing out swarms of small bugs. The tradeoff is more damage dealt at the point of impact, which means it can still make fairly quick work of Chargers and Spewers (good marks for any gun that you can carry by default). I tested the Eruptor on a few missions today and, while it still gets the job done, I agree its puny explosions don't make it stand out the way it used to. It should tell you how high the bar is set for Helldivers 2 guns that a micro-missile-firing, bolt-action scoped super rifle is only somewhat interesting. To the credit of Arrowhead's balancing squad, they're listening to feedback on the updated Eruptor. Just tweaking damage numbers is a blunt tool. Johan Pilestedt, Arrowhead CEO "We can't bring the shrapnel back the way it was," wrote senior game designer Alexus Kravchenko on Discord yesterday. "We don't want it to one-shot chargers, and we don't want it to have a chance to kill you or your teammates (we have a cluster eagle for that). I still strongly believe that the Eruptor benefits from dealing less damage more consistently. So: it's a net minus if you're lucky or are using an exploit, and net plus otherwise." (That "exploit" Kravchenko is referring to was an unintended consequence of the shrapnel damage that'd allow players to aim Eruptor shots under large enemies like Chargers and Spewers, centralize all the shrapnel damage in one place, and kill them instantly.) "However we're still investigating if this change has affected any breakpoints against medium enemies, and we will look into that. I won't promise that it will definitely be buffed, as the weapon in its current state is still absolutely viable. But it's always on our radar." A new batch of guns to scrutinize is set to arrive soon in the Polar Patriots premium warbond, but in an unexpected move, Pilestedt is letting the community vote on delaying the release to put more distance between the whole PSN account linking controversy and asking for $10 from players. https://www.pcgamer.com/games/third-person-shooter/arrowhead-ceo-says-helldivers-2-balancing-patches-have-gone-too-far-recently-it-feels-like-every-time-someone-finds-something-fun-the-fun-is-removed/

  12. Cadillac's V-Series.R was the brand's first racing car to return to the 24 hours of Le Mans in more than 20 years. After success in the North American IMSA GTP class, the car went on to win a podium at the legendary French endurance race. Getting there was not easy. To know just how difficult it was, you can watch Cadillac's new documentary about it. Called No Perfect Formula, the film follows Cadillac Racing in its quest to win races on both sides of the Atlantic. The automaker released a trailer promoting the movie on Thursday, which details not only the racing, but the design, development, engineering, and testing of the V-Series.R. This latest class of hypercar regulations in IMSA and WEC has produced the most exciting sports car racing in years. A documentary following any of the respective teams would be an interesting one. Getting to see the inside story behind the only American team racing in the highest tiers of motorsport is certainly a treat though. No Perfect Formula debuts for free on Samsung TV Plus as well as on Hagerty's Facebook page on May 31st. https://www.motor1.com/news/719003/no-perfect-formula-cadillac-documentary/
  13. Psocoptera (/soʊˈkɒptərə/) are a paraphyletic group of insects that are commonly known as booklice, barklice or barkflies.[1] The name Psocoptera has been replaced with Psocodea in recent literature, with the inclusion of the former order Phthiraptera into Psocodea (as part of the suborder Troctomorpha).[2][3][4][5] These insects first appeared in the Permian period, 295–248 million years ago.[citation needed] They are often regarded as the most primitive of the hemipteroids.[6] Their name originates from the Greek word ψῶχος (psokhos), meaning "gnawed" or "rubbed" and πτερά (ptera), meaning "wings".[7] There are more than 5,500 species in 41 families in three suborders. Many of these species have only been described in the early twenty-first century.[8] They range in size from 1–10 millimetres ( 1 / 32 – 13 / 32 in) in length. The species known as booklice received their common name because they are commonly found amongst old books—they feed upon the paste used in binding. The barklice are found on trees, feeding on algae and lichen. Anatomy and biology Psocids are small, scavenging insects with a relatively generalized body plan. They feed primarily on fungi, algae, lichen, and organic detritus in nature but are also known to feed on starch-based household items like grains, wallpaper glue and book bindings.[9] They have chewing mandibles, and the central lobe of the maxilla is modified into a slender rod. This rod is used to brace the insect while it scrapes up detritus with its mandibles. They also have a swollen forehead, large compound eyes, and three ocelli. Their bodies are soft with a segmented abdomen.[10] Some species can spin silk from glands in their mouth. [11] They may festoon large sections of trunk and branches in dense swathes of silk.[12] Some psocids have small ovipositors that are up to 1.5 times as long as the hindwings, and all four wings have a relatively simple venation pattern, with few cross-veins. The wings, if present, are held tent-like over the body.[10] The legs are slender and adapted for jumping, rather than gripping, as in the true lice. The abdomen has nine segments, and no cerci.[11] There is often considerable variation in the appearance of individuals within the same species. Many have no wings or ovipositors, and may have a different shape to the thorax. Other, more subtle, variations are also known, such as changes to the development of the setae. The significance of such changes is uncertain, but their function appears to be different from similar variations in, for example, aphids. Like aphids, however, many psocids are parthenogenic, and the presence of males may even vary between different races of the same species.[11] Psocids lay their eggs in minute crevices or on foliage, although a few species are known to be viviparous. The young are born as miniature, wingless versions of the adult. These nymphs typically molt six times before reaching full adulthood. The total lifespan of a psocid is rarely more than a few months.[11] Booklice range from approximately 1–2 millimetres ( 1 / 32 – 3 / 32 in). Some species are wingless and they are easily mistaken for bedbug nymphs and vice versa. Booklouse eggs take two to four weeks to hatch and can reach adulthood approximately two months later. Adult booklice can live for six months. Besides damaging books, they also sometimes infest food storage areas, where they feed on dry, starchy materials. Although some psocids feed on starchy household products, the majority of psocids are woodland insects with little to no contact with humans, therefore they are of little economic importance. They are scavengers and do not bite humans.[13] Psocids can affect the ecosystems in which they reside. Many psocids can affect decomposition by feeding on detritus, especially in environments with lower densities of predacious micro arthropods that may eat psocids.[14] The nymph of a psocid species, Psilopsocus mimulus, is the first known wood-boring psocopteran. These nymphs make their own burrows in woody material, rather than inhabiting vacated, existing burrows. This boring activity can create habitats that other organisms may use.[15] Interaction with humans Some species of psocids, such as Liposcelis bostrychophila, are common pests of stored products.[16] Psocids, among other arthropods, have been studied to develop new pest control techniques in food manufacturing. One study found that modified atmospheres during packing (MAP) helped to control the reoccurrence of pests during the manufacturing process and prevented further infestation in the final products that go to consumers.[17] Classification In the 2000s, morphological and molecular phylogenetic evidence has shown that the parasitic lice (Phthiraptera) evolved from within the psocopteran suborder Troctomorpha, thus making Psocoptera paraphyletic with respect to Phthiraptera.[18][19] In modern systematics, Psocoptera and Phthiraptera are therefore treated together in the order Psocodea.[20] Here is a cladogram showing the relationships within Psocodea, with the former grouping Psocoptera highlighted:[2] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psocoptera
  14. Nottingham Forest have moved on despite disappointment that their appeal against a four-point deduction failed, says manager Nuno Espirito Santo. Forest lost their appeal against breaching the Premier League's profit and sustainability Rules (PSR) this week, with an independent three-person board upholding the original decision. It means they remain in 17th place, three points above the relegation zone with two games to play. “We were all disappointed. We had the hope and the belief they [the independent appeal board] could give us points back. But the decision is over,” said Nuno. “We spoke about it with the players, about how this is the reality, this is what we have, this is what we have to face. Let’s focus on ourselves, because it [safety] is in our hands. "Since the beginning, when there was the possibility of a points deduction, we have always faced it the same way - what we have to focus on is ourselves and on our job. It’s in our hands. We have already moved on. ” In March an independent commission found Forest's losses over three years to 2022-23 breached the threshold of £61m by £34.5m. They were the second top-flight team to be penalised for PSR breaches after Everton lost 10 points in November, which was reduced to six on appeal. Last month, Nuno called the situation at the bottom of the table "a mess" while they waited for an appeal verdict, adding that it was damaging the league's integrity. Defender Ola Aina also believes the resolution of the issue, after Forest were charged in January, finally gives the squad clarity in their fight against the drop. They host Chelsea on Saturday knowing victory would seal survival if Luton fail to win at West Ham. "The energy around the club was like it has been forgotten about anyway, especially among the players. We didn't really talk or think about it - we were just thinking about getting points as we normally would," Aina told BBC East Midlands Today. "It feels good that it's in our hands. We can take control of that. I don't think [it is nervy], I think the boys enjoy the task. I really enjoy going out there and having to get something. That's the joy of football. "It would be fantastic [to secure Premier League survival] and I do think we'll do it. It will be fantastic to have that bit of relief, whether that's this week or next week." https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/clm3eepeplgo
  15. Society often considers men to be the perpetrators of domestic violence. In truth, though, women can be violent, too. If your partner is violent with you, understand that that's abuse—and it's absolutely not okay. Your partner should uplift and love you, not make you feel unsafe. We'll teach you about your rights, about how to protect yourself, and about how to get help. Read on to learn everything you need to know. Establish safety first. If your spouse acts violently towards you or anyone else in the home, the first thing you need to do is get yourself (and any other innocents) to a safe place. This may be a locked room somewhere else in your home, a neighbor's house, another family member's home or your local police station.[1] If she comes at you, try to shield yourself from harm as much as possible without retaliating as this can cause you to be considered a perpetrator, too. If you have children in the home, alert them to head to your "safety zone" whenever shouting or other signs of violent behavior takes place. If you believe you are in danger, call the emergency services immediately.[2] Confide in someone you trust. The first step in getting out of a potentially harmful situation is often just letting others know you are in an abusive relationship and you need support and help. Beyond telling someone you trust, it can be helpful to ask them to assist in helping you find a way to leave. You generally need to gather resources, copies of documents and other items as you prepare to leave. A trusted friend can store these items for you. Gather any items you may need to leave like your own cell phone, a separate bank account and legal ID so you are not forced to stay in the home. Leave the relationship or home if you can. Research your options as far as filing for separation, custody and other legal matters so you can coordinate as needed. If there are children in the home, make a plan for all of you to leave safely, if possible. This plan needs to take into account local laws about custody and what needs to occur so you can take the children with you if that is what you want.[3] Because abuse often follows the same cycle, you may be able to time leaving during a time where your partner thinks everything is “normal” and perhaps less likely to think something is going to happen. If you have to leave during the active abuse, beware this is the time you are most likely to be faced with possible false charges of you being the abuser, or even of getting hurt. Reader Poll: We asked 279 wikiHow readers who’ve been victims of abuse, and 65% agreed that in order to maintain safe boundaries, it's important to block your ex’s number and social media accounts after leaving the relationship https://www.wikihow.com/Handle-a-Violent-Girlfriend-or-Wife
  16. A court in Iran has sentenced acclaimed movie director Mohammad Rasoulof to eight years in prison and flogging for national security crimes, his lawyer said on Wednesday. In a statement on social platform X, Babak Paknia said the court found Rasoulof’s films and documentaries to be “examples of collusion with the intention of committing a crime against the security of the country.” The court also imposed an unspecified fine and ordered the confiscation of Rasoulof’s property, Paknia added. CNN has reached out to Iranian authorities for comment. Rasoulof won a Golden Bear for best film at the Berlinale festival in 2020 for “There Is No Evil” and his film “A Man of Integrity” was recognized for a “Certain Regard” honor at Cannes in 2017. The writer-director’s latest work, “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” is due to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in France next week. Ahead of the film’s release, the director and his production team faced pressure from the Iranian government, his lawyer has alleged, writing last week on X that some actors had been interrogated and barred from leaving the country by officials. According to Paknia, some also alleged they were asked by officials to tell Rasoulof to withdraw the film from the festival. Paknia also wrote last week on X that it was unclear whether Rasoulof would be able to travel to Cannes to attend the screening of his film. In 2022, an Iranian court sentenced Rasoulof to one year in prison and banned him from making films for two years on the charge of “propaganda against the system,” according to Human Rights Watch. Iranian authorities have previously arrested him multiple times and confiscated his passport because of his work, HRW said. In a statement, Iran’s Independent Filmmaker Association criticized the latest sentence handed to the director. “Once again, the judiciary’s verdict against Mohammad Rasoulof proved that the law is only a playground for stubbornness and revenge in the legal system contaminated by government jurisprudence,” it said. https://edition.cnn.com/2024/05/09/middleeast/iran-rasoulof-prison-sentence-flogging-intl/index.html
