  3. The Baader-Meinhof effect is experienced when someone learns about something new, then begins seeing that new thing everywhere. The term is named for a German terrorist group from the 1970s. According to Psychology Today, a guy named Terry Mullen learned about the Baader-Meinhof group one day, and saw its name pop up again the next day, having gone his whole life unaware of the militant ultra-left organization. He wrote about the phenomenon in a letter to his local newspaper, and the Baader-Meinhof effect was named. Something similar happens whenever I drive a Subaru—I start seeing them everywhere. They are, of course, always everywhere. But unless you’re looking for them, they simply blend into the background. In my tony Brooklyn neighborhood, filled with outdoorsy types who love to escape the city on weekends, Subarus blend into the scenery, filling the cracks between those old brownstones and their cast-iron fences. I’ll count at least four Subarus street-parked on any given block, and a lot of them are Foresters. Subaru seems to understand my neighbors—its customers—well. For 2025, the Subaru Forester is new, though not quite all-new. The bones are the same as the before, albeit updated for added refinement and with new bodywork overtop. The engine is a carryover from the previous two generations of Forester, a 2.5-liter flat-four now making 180 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with a continuously variable transmission and Subaru’s signature Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. Inside, there’s a thorough reworking, though the new Forester’s cabin feels basically identical to all other Subaru models. https://www.motor1.com/reviews/721753/2025-subaru-forester-review/
  4. Chelsea will turn down any loan moves for Romelu Lukaku this summer in a bid to sell the Belgium striker in a permanent deal. They are looking to recoup some of £97.5m they paid Inter Milan for him in 2021, with their asking price believed to be about £37m as the club aims to get the 31-year-old's £325,000-a-week wages off their books. Roma are interested in re-signing Lukaku, who spent last season on loan at the Serie A club, but are unable to meet the asking price. AC Milan and Napoli, who have just appointed Lukaku’s former manager Antonio Conte, are also reportedly interested. But the Italian clubs have limited finances and will have to see whether Chelsea soften their stance later in the transfer window. Napoli were also tipped to propose a swap deal for striker Victor Osimhen but Chelsea are not interested in signing the Nigerian, who is valued in excess of £100m. Chelsea accepted a bid for Lukaku from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal last summer but the forward rejected the move. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/cw88d24zvg3o
  5. Bickering about toys. Battles over who goes first. Tiffs, tats, tattling, too: It’s not very fun to listen to kids in conflict. Understandably, if you’re like many of us, you move to extinguish the conflict as quickly as possible—with a raised voice, a swift removal of the problem toy, and a perhaps a demand that, You kids need to learn to get along! But learning how to get along actually needs to be taught to young children, and therein lies the silver lining of sibling squabbles. Arguments give moms and dads a fantastic opportunity to teach children about resolving problems with positivity, calm, and kindness. That’s an interpersonal skill worth taking the time to teach. After all, conflict resolution will help your children live more peaceably at home with their siblings, their friends, and their future coworkers. In other words, our goal as parents shouldn’t be to get rid of conflict entirely, but to help our children successfully work through it. So next time little tempers flare, try a new approach. It takes a little longer, but stick with it and you’ll find that what you’re laying down for your children is a road that leads to healthier relationships, and, yes, even peace. Take a look. 1. Bring some peace to the situation. You cannot solve a conflict with the same energy that created it—so enter the room calmly and silently. Literally don't say a word. Physically get down to the children’s level, preferably between them. Gently touch each child and make eye contact. This approach has the effect of removing power from the conflict and cooling the room. 2. Remove the source of the struggle—calmly. If the children are fighting over a toy, don’t grab it from them. When they have quieted, put your hand out and say, Toy, please. Be patient. If they don't give you the toy, ask for it again. If they still don't, say, You can put the toy in my hand, or I can help you. (Which means that yes, you will take it if need be.) 3. Empathize with the most emotional child first—but acknowledge both. Use the language of understanding to acknowledge the big feelings in the room. Wow, it looks like you were really upset that you couldn’t play with that toy. While talking, continue to touch each child gently and look at them both. Remember, your job is not to get to the bottom of the argument: You are not the judge or jury, and you weren't there. Your job is to help them learn how to move through big feelings and conflict with positivity and calm. 4. Let them express what they wanted. Help facilitate a positive dialogue between them, by helping them take turns talking and listening. Help each of them explain what he or she wants or needs without expressing blame or devolving into what was or wasn’t fair about the situation. 5. Ask them how they could work it out so they are both happy. Lead a mini-brainstorming session, and to all of their suggestions try using phrases like, That's an idea! Do not offer suggestions unless they get really stuck. Avoid judging someone's idea being better than another; instead, you can respond with phrases like, I can see that solution would work for you, but do you think that would make your sister happy? 6. Help them choose a final solution. Make sure they are both happy with the outcome. 7. Acknowledge both children specifically for the skills they demonstrated for solving their problem. Find the good. You were patient. You were creative. You stuck up for your needs. Phrases like these help them identify positive skills to resolve future conflicts. I’m sure you are saying to yourself, “I don't have time to do this every time my children are fighting!" Don't worry! You don't have to. If you take the time to do these steps just a couple of times a week, eventually they’ll get the hang of it and do it on their own. https://www.kindercare.com/content-hub/articles/2017/april/kids-always-in-battle-mode-heres-how-to-peacefully-restore-the-peace
  6. Slovenia has become the latest European country to formally recognize Palestinian statehood, after the country’s parliament approved the move with a majority vote on Tuesday. The decision follows those of Spain, Ireland and Norway, who formally recognized Palestinian statehood in late May. The growing momentum in Europe is likely to bolster the global Palestinian cause, but could further strain relations with Israel. Most of the world already recognizes Palestinian statehood. More than 140 out of 193 member states of the United Nations have made their recognition official. But only some nations in the 27-member European Union are among them. The vote passed with 52 votes in favor and zero against, Slovenia’s national broadcaster RTV Slovenija reported. The vote passed during an extraordinary parliament session after numerous procedural hurdles, according to the outlet. The decision follows Spain, Ireland and Norway, which formally recognized Palestinian statehood in May. They have joined more than 140 countries that have recognized a Palestinian state since 1988. None of the G7 countries — United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy or Japan — do. “Today is a historic day! The National Assembly of Slovenia has officially recognized Palestine, making Slovenia the 147th country to do so,” Slovenia’s Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon said in a series of posts on social media. “This recognition is an expression of our commitment to peace and justice. Slovenia is on the right side of history, contributing to the two-state solution for lasting peace,” Fajon said. Israel launched its military offensive in Gaza on October 7 after the militant group Hamas, which governs Gaza, killed at least 1,200 people and abducted more than 250 others. Israeli attacks in Gaza have since killed at least 36,550 Palestinians and injured another 82,959 people, according to the Ministry of Health there. CNN cannot independently confirm the figures. Audience members hold Palestinian flags in the crowd during the final dress rehearsal before the 68th edition Eurovision Song Contest final at Malmo Arena, in Malmo, Sweden May 11, 2024. RELATED ARTICLE Spain, Ireland and Norway have recognized Palestinian statehood. Where does Europe stand on the issue? Amid the rising toll, Israel has come under increasingly fierce criticism. Earlier this month, a panel of independent UN experts condemned “the continued and systematic onslaught of violence committed against Palestinians in Gaza.” The agency has repeatedly called for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages taken by Hamas. Slovenia’s foreign minister said the country believes only a two-state solution can lead to a lasting peace in the Middle East and that her country “will tirelessly continue to work on the security of both nations, Palestinians and Israelis.” The two-state solution has been the goal of the international community for decades, with many nations believing it is the only way out of the long-running conflict. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu endorsed the idea of two states in 2009 under pressure from the Obama administration, but more recently has said that recognizing a Palestinian state post-October 7 would be a “reward for terror.” Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz ordered the immediate recall of Israel’s ambassadors to Spain, Norway and Ireland after the countries’ decision last month. The vast majority of the po[CENSORED]tion in Gaza are descendants of 700,000 Palestinians who fled or were forcibly expelled from their homes during what Palestinians call al-Nakba, or “the catastrophe,” of the 1948-49 war, in what is now Israel. 8. In this tutorial, you'll learn all about Asynchronous JavaScript. But before we dive into that, we need to make sure you understand what Synchronous code is and how it works. What is Synchronous Code? When we write a program in JavaScript, it executes line by line. When a line is completely executed, then and then only does the code move forward to execute the next line. Let's look at an example of this: let greet_one = "Hello" let greet_two = "World!!!" console.log(greet_one) for(let i=0;i<1000000000;i++) { } console.log(greet_two); Now if you run the above example on your machine you will notice that greet_one logs first. Then the program waits for a couple of seconds and then logs greet_two. This is because the code executes line by line. This is called synchronous code. This creates lot of problems. For example, if a certain piece of code takes 10 seconds to execute, the code after it won't be able to execute until it's finished, causing delays. Now, setTimeout is asynchronous so it runs in background, allowing code after it to execute while it runs. After 10 seconds, Asynchronous will print because we set a time of 10 seconds in setTimeout to execute it after 10 seconds. In this tutorial, we will study asynchronous JavaScript in detail so you can learn how to write your own asynchronous code. I just wanted to give you a taste of async JavaScript using in-built functions to whet your appetite. function compute(action, x, y){ if(action === "add"){ return x+y }else if(action === "divide"){ return x/y } } console.log(compute("add",10,5)) console.log(compute("divide",10,5)) In the above example, we have two operations. But what if we want to add more operations? Then the number of if/else statements would increase. This code would be lengthy, so we use callbacks instead: https://www.freecodecamp.org/news/asynchronous-javascript/#:~:text=In JavaScript%2C there are two, failure) of an asynchronous operation.
  9. Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Super The best graphics card for gaming Now that Nvidia and AMD have released the last GPUs we're likely to see this generation, it's time to look back and see what made the cut among the best graphics cards. Although there are definitely weak options on the market, some smart price shifting and well-timed refreshes for 2024 have given current-gen graphics cards new life. We've reviewed every graphics card released by Nvidia, AMD, and Intel over the past few years, testing them in a variety of games to see how they hold up. If you're new to graphics cards and PC gaming in general, make sure to check out our guide on how to install a graphics card and on the best GPU deals currently available. Why should you buy this: It's much faster than the original model, and it comes in at the same price. Who's it for: Midrange to high-end gamers looking for a GPU that can handle the most demanding games at 1440p. What we thought of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Super: The RTX 4070 was already a great graphics card, but Nvidia made it even better with a Super refresh. This new version is between 10% and 15% faster than the base model based on our testing, and it still comes with all of the features that made the original version so impressive. Now, you're getting frame rates at the target resolution that are consistently above 100 fps, and often much more. On top of that the RTX 4070 Super has enough power to press up to 4K, assuming you make a few compromises in the most demanding games. It's the Swiss Army Knife of graphics cards, filling its duty as a gaming workhorse in just about any situation. It comes with Nvidia's excellent DLSS 3.5, as well. It's a huge asset in games like Alan Wake 2 with path tracing turned on, and it can make demanding games more playable at 4K. Between DLSS 3, solid raw performance, and an attainable price, the RTX 4070 Super nails a sweet spot that most graphics cards miss. https://www.cnet.com/tech/gaming/best-graphics-card/
  10. The same dark fluid that spaghettified some scientists in Helldivers 2 is now being used to obliterate a Terminid supercolony, as per the most recent major order. However, there's a problem—the bespoke dark fluid missions are, uh, they're really hard. Cruel, even. And I don't mean hard in a "git gud" or "just play a lower difficulty" way, I mean in the way where something's clearly gone wrong. Here's how one of these missions is supposed to play out: You and three other unlucky sods drop into Meridia, a supercolony in need of its own spaghettification. You call in a dark fluid backpack (that can also be used as a jetpack, which is fun) and haul ass to get to a drill site. Call in a drill, defend it, then extract. Except the Terminids really don't want you to be there—which is fair enough, sure. It's a super colony of the buggers. I'd be on-board with a ramp-up in difficulty for these very solid thematic reasons, only—bug breaches, where Terminids pour out of an improvised hole, appear to have zero restrictions as to where they can spawn. Shriekers (those flying bugs that now exist and have always existed) are also proving to be a terrifying nuisance, spawning in some obscene numbers even on lower difficulties. Here's one unfortunate soul getting dive bombed by an unmanageable cloud of bug-birds on the game's "Trivial" difficulty. Yeah, something's up—there's a difference between a challenge, and your drill getting instagibbed by a bile titan spawning within spitting distance of the objective, or new players getting mobbed by an airborne rave. Community sentiment is largely the same on the game's subreddit. "You can't tell people to 'just lower their difficulties' if the level 1 missions spawns 100 shriekers on their head. That's just crappy advice," writes one particularly peeved diver in a thread with over 6,800 upvotes at the time of writing. Another player writes: "We're all very experienced, I personally have 350+ hours in [the game] … The bug breaches spawn RIGHT on the tectonic drill. Clearly, the environment was designed to have three choke points from which bugs were supposed to come. How is ANYONE supposed to defend this, when EVERY time you load the dark fluid in the drill, the breaches appear with tons of hive guards, chargers and titans, that can basically one shot the drill? What was the design philosophy behind that?" Fortunately, it seems like the spawn rates aren't, in fact, intended: "Thank you to everyone that made us aware of the spawning bug in the current Major Order," writes community manager Baskinator. "A hotfix is currently being worked on for that issue and will be deployed as soon as possible. We'll let you know as soon as it's available." https://www.pcgamer.com/games/third-person-shooter/the-new-helldivers-2-major-order-has-some-major-issues-as-the-super-colony-of-meridia-proves-a-little-too-super/

  12. Young voters in key election battlegrounds are being recommended fake AI-generated videos featuring party leaders, misinformation, and clips littered with abusive comments, the BBC has found. With TikTok emerging as a new social media battleground in this election, the political parties have begun a war of memes on the app in a bid to reach its audience of young voters. But a BBC project to investigate the content promoted by social media algorithms has found - alongside funny montages - young people on TikTok are being exposed to misleading and divisive content. It is being shared by everyone from students and political activists to comedians and anonymous bot-like accounts. Videos which have racked up hundreds of thousands of views have promoted unfounded rumours that a major scandal prompted Rishi Sunak to call an early election and the baseless claim that Sir Keir Starmer was responsible for the failure to prosecute serial paedophile Jimmy Savile. Satirical, fake AI-generated clips show Rishi Sunak declaring, “Please don’t vote us out, we would be proper gutted!” and making unevidenced claims about how the Conservative leader is spending public money - including how he will send his “mates loads of dosh”. Other AI-generated videos share misleading claims about his national service pledge for 18-year-olds, suggesting young people would be sent to current war zones in Ukraine and Gaza. Some of these are described as satire or parody in captions, but the comments suggest some users are confused about which claims are factual. TikTok told the BBC it had increased its investment in countering misinformation for the UK general election, including adding a fact-checking expert to existing resources and employing AI-labelling technology. The videos were spotted as part of the BBC's Undercover Voters project, which has created profiles for 24 fictional people on all the major social media sites, based on data and analysis by the National Centre for Social Research (Natcen). The fictional profiles represent a range of voters in battleground constituencies across the UK, giving an insight into what content is promoted to different types of people. The profiles are private, with no friends. They just like, follow and watch content relevant to their character traits informed by the Natcen research. I examined the feeds of the profiles of three of these fictional voters in the former “red wall” constituency of Bishop Auckland, a target for Labour which is currently held by the Conservatives - and where our Undercover Voters are younger. Their social media feeds revealed that, while other sites have also experienced a flurry of political content, TikTok had the most lively conversation, particularly among younger voters. TikTok has boomed since the last election. According to media regulator Ofcom, it was the fastest-growing source of news in the UK for the second year in a row in 2023 - used by 10% of adults in this way. One in 10 teenagers say it is their most important news source. TikTok is engaging a new generation in the democratic process. Whether you use the social media app or not, what is unfolding on its site could shape narratives about the election and its candidates - including in ways that may be unfounded. Content promoted to Undercover Voter character Jack, a disaffected 31-year-old, include TikToks misrepresenting remarks made by Labour politicians in speech bubbles. These include comments about immigration, transgender rights, Brexit - and false claims that the shadow international development secretary called to “abolish the Army”. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c1ww6vz1l81o

An England line-up that was likely much different to the one which will take to the field against Serbia in their Euro 2024 opener in 13 days' time struggled to create against new Bosnia boss Sergej Barbarez's defensive line-up before half-time Eberechi Eze and Cole Palmer had been two of few bright spots for Gareth Southgate to that point, but the Three Lions re-emerged from the dressing room energised - and eventually put their opponents to the sword. 14. These 8 practical tips cover the basics of healthy eating and can help you make healthier choices. The key to a healthy diet is to eat the right amount of calories for how active you are so you balance the energy you consume with the energy you use. If you eat or drink more than your body needs, you'll put on weight because the energy you do not use is stored as fat. If you eat and drink too little, you'll lose weight. You should also eat a wide range of foods to make sure you're getting a balanced diet and your body is receiving all the nutrients it needs. It's recommended that men have around 2,500 calories a day (10,500 kilojoules). Women should have around 2,000 calories a day (8,400 kilojoules). Most adults in the UK are eating more calories than they need and should eat fewer calories. 1. Base your meals on higher fibre starchy carbohydrates Starchy carbohydrates should make up just over a third of the food you eat. They include potatoes, bread, rice, pasta and cereals. Choose higher fibre or wholegrain varieties, such as wholewheat pasta, brown rice or potatoes with their skins on. They contain more fibre than white or refined starchy carbohydrates and can help you feel full for longer. Try to include at least 1 starchy food with each main meal. Some people think starchy foods are fattening, but gram for gram the carbohydrate they contain provides fewer than half the calories of fat. Keep an eye on the fats you add when you're cooking or serving these types of foods because that's what increases the calorie content – for example, oil on chips, butter on bread and creamy sauces on pasta. 2. Eat lots of fruit and veg It's recommended that you eat at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and veg every day. They can be fresh, frozen, canned, dried or juiced. Getting your 5 A Day is easier than it sounds. Why not chop a banana over your breakfast cereal, or swap your usual mid-morning snack for a piece of fresh fruit? A portion of fresh, canned or frozen fruit and vegetables is 80g. A portion of dried fruit (which should be kept to mealtimes) is 30g. A 150ml glass of fruit juice, vegetable juice or smoothie also counts as 1 portion, but limit the amount you have to no more than 1 glass a day as these drinks are sugary and can damage your teeth. 3. Eat more fish, including a portion of oily fish Fish is a good source of protein and contains many vitamins and minerals. Aim to eat at least 2 portions of fish a week, including at least 1 portion of oily fish. Oily fish are high in omega-3 fats, which may help prevent heart disease. Oily fish include: salmon trout herring sardines pilchards mackerel Non-oily fish include: haddock plaice coley cod tuna skate hake You can choose from fresh, frozen and canned, but remember that canned and smoked fish can be high in salt. Most people should be eating more fish, but there are recommended limits for some types of fish. Find out more about fish and shellfish 4. Cut down on saturated fat and sugar Saturated fat You need some fat in your diet, but it's important to pay attention to the amount and type of fat you're eating. There are 2 main types of fat: saturated and unsaturated. Too much saturated fat can increase the amount of cholesterol in the blood, which increases your risk of developing heart disease. On average, men should have no more than 30g of saturated fat a day. On average, women should have no more than 20g of saturated fat a day. Children under the age of 11 should have less saturated fat than adults, but a low-fat diet is not suitable for children under 5. In addition, full-fat dairy products, such as cheese, fromage frais and yoghurt, are recommended up to the age of 2 years. Saturated fat is found in many foods, such as: fatty cuts of meat sausages butter hard cheese cream cakes biscuits lard pies Try to eat less saturated fat and choose foods that contain unsaturated fats instead, such as vegetable oils and spreads, oily fish and avocados. For a healthier choice, use a small amount of vegetable or olive oil, or reduced-fat spread instead of butter, lard or ghee. When you're having meat, choose lean cuts and cut off any visible fat. All types of fat are high in energy, so they should only be eaten in small amounts. Sugar Regularly consuming foods and drinks high in sugar increases your risk of obesity and tooth decay. Sugary foods and drinks are often high in energy (measured in kilojoules or calories), and if consumed too often can contribute to weight gain. They can also cause tooth decay, especially if eaten between meals. Free sugars are any sugars added to foods or drinks, or found naturally in honey, syrups and unsweetened fruit juices and smoothies. This is the type of sugar you should be cutting down on, rather than the sugar found in fruit and milk. Many packaged foods and drinks contain surprisingly high amounts of free sugars. Free sugars are found in many foods, such as: sugary fizzy drinks sugary breakfast cereals cakes biscuits pastries and puddings sweets and chocolate alcoholic drinks Food labels can help. Use them to check how much sugar foods contain. More than 22.5g of total sugars per 100g means the food is high in sugar, while 5g of total sugars or less per 100g means the food is low https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/how-to-eat-a-balanced-diet/eight-tips-for-healthy-eating/
  15. A firefighter died while trying to rescue trapped residents and several thousand people were forced to leave their homes as heavy rain caused flooding in southern Germany. The 42-year-old man who died was in a rescue boat carrying four firefighters that capsized late on Saturday. His body was recovered early on Sunday, said a spokesperson for the Bavarian town of Pfaffenbach an der Ilm, around 50 km (30 miles) north of Munich. Municipalities had days to prepare for the flooding but around 3,000 people had to be evacuated in southern Germany as the water cut off some areas, authorities said. “We owe our thanks and respect to the rescue workers and helpers who are battling the consequences of the floods in many places,” Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on X. Scholz is scheduled to travel to the region on Monday, where he will meet with Interior Minister Nancy Faeser and Bavaria’s premier mid-morning local time to get an overview, a government spokesperson said. Economy Minister and Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck pledged support for the affected regions during a visit on Sunday and noted that climate change is causing more severe weather events. “Natural disasters have always accompanied mankind. What we are seeing is that the frequency of these events is increasing significantly. Record floods occur every few years … record rainfall every few years,” Habeck, of the Greens Party, told broadcaster n-tv. Parts of Europe were hit by major flooding in 2021 that killed nearly 200, with Germany bearing the brunt. The disaster was largely blamed on the consequences of climate change and prompted calls for stricter warning and safety measures. https://edition.cnn.com/2024/06/02/europe/germany-floods-thousands-evacuated-intl-latam/index.html
  16. During the State of Play conference, Sony announced that po[CENSORED]r prestige-action sequel God of War Ragnarök would finally be coming to PC in September. The PC version will have unlocked framerates, upscaling, super ultra widescreen support, and will include the Valhalla DLC as well as the New Game+ mode added post-launch, as Sony's blog post explained. And then, in a footnote at the bottom, it added "Account for PlayStation Network is required." The Steam page and Epic page corroborate this, saying: "PlayStation Network Account required, subject to the PlayStation Terms of Services and User Agreement." They then link to the PlayStation Network terms of service. This presumably means God of War Ragnarök will be unavailable in the 177 countries and territories where PSN can't be accessed, as we learned when Helldivers 2 was delisted en masse following Sony's requirement of a PSN login (a demand that Sony subsequently backed down from). ince then, we've seen Ghost of Tsushima end up in a similar pickle. The PC version was likewise delisted in those 177 countries and territories because its co-op multiplayer mode requires a PSN sign-in to access. Oddly, Ghost of Tsushima doesn't demand a login if you're just playing the singleplayer mode, and yet God of War Ragnarök—an entirely singleplayer game—for some reason will. https://www.pcgamer.com/games/action/god-of-war-ragnarok-will-require-a-psn-account-to-play-on-pc/
