https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-tayside-central-61738012 An influx of ferrets to an animal rescue charity's rehoming centres has sparked an appeal for potential pet owners. The Scottish SPCA is looking after about 60 of the creatures at its nine centres, many times more than usual. It says a number of factors, including a lockdown reduction in hormone injections to take females out of season, has led to the rise. The SSPCA website currently has more than 30 ferrets available for rehoming. The charity's Aberdeenshire centre currently has nine ferrets, including a female - or jill - which has just had a litter of seven. Robert Morrison, an animal care assistant at the centre, said "This is much higher than normal. We used to only see about six or seven ferrets maximum at any point throughout the year. "Recently, we've had up to 15 ferrets at any one time, so we're seeing a huge increase in the recent months." Mr Morrison said the creatures are also currently coming into season, leading to a rise in numbers. He said: "A lot of the younger, cuter ferrets are finding homes and the older ones are getting moved out to make space for them." Mr Morrison also said cancellations of face-to-face vet appointments due to Covid had played a part. He said: "People getting ferrets 'jill jabs', which brings a female out of season, hasn't been happening as much over that time period. "So people were finding it easier to let the ferrets be mated and have cute little ones or babies." Ferrets were first domesticated more than 2,000 years ago. Mr Morrison said the animals make "absolutely brilliant" pets. He said: "They are very sociable animals, they really thrive on your interaction with them. "They are also very smart animals and thrive on this kind of companionship with their owners."

https://www.bbc.com/news/business-61754394 Rishi Sunak has been accused of failing to act soon enough to save £11bn of taxpayers' money that has been used to pay interest on government debt. The National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR) said the losses stemmed from the chancellor's failure to insure against interest rate rises. It meant higher than necessary payments on £900bn of reserves created through the quantitative easing (QE) programme. The Treasury said it has "a clear financing strategy" on debt. The NIESR's Professor Jagjit Chadha, told the Financial Times that Mr Sunak's actions had left the country with "an enormous bill and heavy continuing exposure to interest rate risk". According to the FT report, the Bank of England (BoE) created £895bn of money through quantitative easing, most of which was used to buy government bonds from pension funds and other investors. When those investors put the proceeds in commercial bank deposits at the Bank, it had to pay interest at its official interest rate. Last year, when the official rate was still 0.1%, the NIESR - an economic research group - said the government should have insured the cost of servicing this debt against the risk of rising interest rates. It suggested converting the debt into government bonds with longer to pay it back. Prof Chadha said Mr Sunak's failure to do this had cost taxpayers £11bn. "It would have been much better to have reduced the scale of short-term liabilities earlier, as we argued for some time, and to exploit the benefits of longer-term debt issuance," he told the FT. 'Fast and loose' Labour's shadow treasury minister Tulip Siddiq said: "These are astronomical sums for the chancellor to lose, and leaves working people picking up the cheque for his severe wastefulness while he hikes their taxes in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis. "This government has played fast and loose with taxpayers' money. Britain deserves a government that respects public money and delivers for people across the country." A Treasury spokesman said: "There are long-standing arrangements around the asset purchase facility - to date £120bn has been transferred to HM Treasury and used to reduce our debt, but we have always been aware that at some point the direction of those payments may need to reverse. "We have a clear financing strategy to meet the government's funding needs, which we set independently of the Bank of England's monetary policy decisions. "It is for the [Bank's] Monetary Policy Committee to take decisions on quantitative easing operations to meet the objectives in their remit, and we remain fully committed to their independence."

https://www.bbc.com/sport/northern-ireland/61745657 A Northern Ireland rider who secured his first Isle of Man TT podium finish has explained how he suffered two black eyes when a bird smashed through his visor in a practice incident last week. Paul Jordan finished third in Wednesday's Supertwins race, which was won by English rider Peter Hickman. "I was going down Sulby Straight and was tucked in behind another rider. "He ducked the bird and the bird came straight through the visor of my helmet," explained the Magherafelt man. "Now I'm left with two 'shiners'," added Jordan after his maiden rostrum in the Twins three-lapper. Jordan had registered the sixth fastest time in qualifying for the Supertwins race, on board his Kawasaki backed by the Manx-based PreZ Racing team. The 30-year-old was outside the top six after the first lap of the race but had moved up to fifth place by the conclusion of the second circuit. The retirements of Michael Dunlop, who was involved in a thrilling battle for the lead with Hickman, and Jamie Coward, saw Jordan contest third place with Frenchman Pierre Yves Bian with the Northern Irishman prevailing by 6.9 seconds. Jordan, whose TT efforts have also been hampered by a hand injury, ended 23 seconds behind runner-up and compatriot Lee Johnston. His previous best TT finish was a fourth spot in the 2019 running of the Supertwins, while he won the same class in the Ulster Grand Prix races at Dundrod in the same year. "It's unbelievable. I have no words really," said the former British 125cc championship competitor. "I saw Michael go out at Kirk Michael and knew I was fourth or fifth so I said to myself, 'Just keep the head down and push on'. "I was directed into the top three enclosure and I nearly put my fist through the tank. I'm lost for words. "With the wind on the Mountain section I was really struggling to pull sixth gear on the bike and I nearly lost the front coming into Governor's Dip. She was gone completely." Jordan had taken a second place at the North West 200 last month and finished 11th in Monday's Supersport TT in which he was penalised 10 seconds for exceeding the speed limit in the refuelling area.
