Economic Price rises dipped slightly in September as the economy continued to reopen, according to official figures. The increase in the cost of living, as measured by the Consumer Prices Index, fell to 3.1% in the year to September, down from 3.2% in August. Higher prices for transport were the biggest contributor to price rises. It comes after the Bank of England warned it "will have to act" over rising inflation, suggesting interest rates may rise soon. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the inflation rate fell back slightly last month because prices in restaurants rose less this August than last when the Eat Out to Help Out Scheme was running. Under the scheme, diners got a state-backed 50% discount on meals up to £10 each on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Mike Hardie, head of prices at the ONS, said: "However, this was partially offset by most other categories, including price rises for furniture and household goods and food prices falling more slowly than this time last year. "The costs of goods produced by factories rose again, with metals and machinery showing a notable price rise. Road freight costs for UK businesses also continued to rise across the summer." Simply put, inflation is the rate at which prices are rising - if the cost of a £1 jar of jam rises by 5p, then jam inflation is 5%. It applies to services too, like having your nails done or getting your car valeted. You may not notice low levels of inflation from month to month, but in the long term, these price rises can have a big impact on how much you can buy with your money. Although price rises edged lower in September, the increase of 3.1% remains far above the Bank of England's target of 2%. Last month, transport costs made the biggest contribution to price increases. Average petrol prices stood at 134.9 pence a litre, compared with 113.3 pence a litre in September of 2020, when travel was reduced under travel restrictions. The ONS added that the September 2021 price for fuel was the highest recorded since September 2013. Suren Thiru, head of economics at the British Chambers of Commerce, said that further price increases were expected in the coming months "with the increase in the energy price cap, partial reversal of the VAT reductions for hospitality and tourism and persistent supply chain disruption". He warned that rising inflation could disrupt UK's economic recovery by squeezing people's spending power and firms' profit margins.

The upcoming all-new BMW executive saloon based on the firm's Neue Klasse EV platform will use battery technology familiar with today's electric cars - but the firm is still planning to introduce solid state batteries in the near future. The brand remains tight-lipped on when such batteries could enter the mainstream market, but it has repeatedly pledged a commitment to introducing solid-state technology as a means of increasing range and reducing costs. It has said that it will deploy the technology in a demonstrator vehicle by 2025. As well as offering enhanced usability by requiring fewer charges, the solid-state batteries will also be recyclable in line with BMW’s ambitious sustainability pledges and will be produced “in a European value chain”, as confirmed earlier this year by the firm’s R&D boss, Frank Weber. The introduction of solid-state batteries will mark another step change in the evolution of BMW’s electric cars and is tipped to be crucial in bringing them much closer in line with their petrol and diesel equivalents in terms of price, thanks to vastly reduced manufacturing costs. The electric saloon, currently known by its internal working name NK1, will recieve BMW's sixth-generation electric powertrain, rapid-charging capability, lightweight construction, and a new mix of sustainable construction materials. It is set to be sold alongside combustion-engined saloons and new EV models, with an expected launch date of 2025. It is unclear whether solid state technology will be commercially viable during NK1's lifespan, or if it will be the next generation of road cars that will recieve the new batteries.

There's a cartoon called Phineas and Ferb that has an excellent song about a platypus called Perry. It says "he's a furry little flatfoot who'll never flinch from a fray" and "he's got more than just mad skill—he's got a beaver tail and bill." Perry the Platypus is the tribute these unique mammals deserve, and now our web-footed burping friend has been modded into Minecraft. You can pick up the mod, which has the rather straightforward name of 'Platypuses in Minecraft!', over at Curseforge, and it does add platypuses. Yes they are amazing looking, and the mod was created by Your_Jeans and a friend. When you add platypuses to your Minecraft world, they'll spawn in rivers and swamps, with the Perry the platypus variant being rarer. The mod has an admirable dedication to the makeup of our duck-billed friend, and so they have poisonous claws and adore crayfish. Thus crayfish can be used to tame them and get your own platypus pet. But then the fun's only beginning: your tamed platypus will now help you fight other mobs, and you can also somehow extract poison from them with a glass bottle. Finally, the most important thing: You can breed tamed platypuses with a salmon! The mod's been out for a while and this is not the first time platypuses have been put in Minecraft: there's a server called Minecraft Ultimate that's had them for a while, and ideas for a mob like this have been around for years. But this one has Perry the Platypus so that puts it over the line for me. Minecraft's newest official mob is this dancing, gift-giving spirit, and it's also had a bit of an amphibious moment with the addition of cutesy frogs. The internet petitions for some official platypus-surfing action start here.

Apple has unleashed two new processors for Macs: the M1 Pro and the M1 Max. These homegrown Arm-based chips are revamped, and much larger, versions of the M1 launched last year, and include memory, CPU, and GPU all under one roof. Apple even says its new GPU is a match for Nvidia's RTX 3080 mobile chip, though you'll have to take Apple's word for it on that one. We've also reached out to Nvidia to see what it might have to say on the matter. The M1 Max is the larger of the two chips, or rather system-on-chips (SoCs), at a whopping 57 billion transistors, and that means it comes with the most memory, most cores, and claims the largest performance wins. It's a 10-core CPU with eight performance cores and two efficiency cores, a 32-core GPU, and up to 64GB of memory. Each of those GPU cores comes with 16 Execution Units, each of those containing 8 ALUs. That makes for a 4,096 ALU GPU within the M1 Max. And Apple says that's enough to deliver "performance similar to that of the highest-end GPU in the largest PC laptops while using up to 100 watts less power." Check out its graph to prove it. Just bear in mind Apple is not offering any indication of the benchmarks it used to gather these figures, only that it collected them "using select industry-standard benchmarks". So, exciting to look at, but not really all that useful. The laptop Apple is rating performance against is the MSI GE76 Raider (11UH-053), which comes with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 mobile GPU with 16GB GDDR6, an Intel Core i9 11980HK, and 32GB of RAM. So let's try and understand what's actually going on with Apple's new GPU, to better determine what we can actually expect from the M1 Max. Apple says the GPU within the M1 Max is four times faster than the GPU in the M1, which checks out because it's exactly four times larger. The full eight-core M1 is rated to roughly 2.6 TFLOPS, so we're looking at a GPU in the M1 Max that's in the area of 10.4 TFLOPS. That's actually quite a long way off the 18.98 TFLOPS of the RTX 3080 Mobile running at top speed, as it should in the MSI GE76 Raider. Apple's chip falls closer to the RTX 3060, in fact. So how is Apple saying its M1 Max is that much faster Well, that's probably going to come down to the benchmarks which Apple has decided to run for testing purposes. The way in which the M1 Max chip is constructed, the large unified memory pool available to the GPU and CPU, and even the programming language used down to the metal will make a huge difference to how Apple and Nvidia's chips perform under different circumstances. The M1 Max comes with 400GB/s of memory bandwidth and access to lots of it. That means any workload that utilises all the available memory bandwidth could perform really well on the M1 Max. And we've no real indication of what was used to test, which is the real kicker here. I'd take a swing at saying it was a benchmark more representative to the professional creative applications Apple expects its M1 Max to be used for, and almost certainly nothing related to gaming. That's not Apple's cup of tea. Though it is interesting in itself that Apple would use a gaming laptop for comparison here. In answering my own question posed in the headline: should you believe Apple's GPU performance stats? There's sure to be truth behind the figures, but the devil is in the details, which we don't have yet.

PlayStation 5 and PS5 Digital Edition will be back in stock on Monday, October 25 at 12pm (noon) in India. Sony's online store ShopAtSC has updated its FAQs for PlayStation 5 page with the pre-order date and time for both the standard and Digital Edition of the PS5. The details were also mentioned briefly in a banner on the website's dedicated page for PS5, but was removed later. The console is likely to be available for pre-order on other e-commerce websites as well on the above-mentioned date. Currently, the PS5 is showing up as ‘out of stock' on other platforms. ShopAtSC on Tuesday updated its PS5 and the PS5 Digital Edition pages with a banner that showed the pre-order date and time in India. At the time of writing, the website had already removed it. The FAQs page, however, still shows that the next-gen consoles will be available for pre-order on October 25, 2021, starting “12 noon onwards.” The PS5 last went on pre-order in India on October 4 and like all previous sale dates, the console was sold out in minutes. So, this time as well, the PS5 may run out of stock quickly if you don't place the order immediately at 12pm. Based on the new pre-orders, the PS5 will begin shipping on November 10, according to the FAQs page. Multiple websites including Amazon, Flipkart, Games The Shop, Vijay Sales, Prepaid Gamer Card, Croma, and Game Loot have the console listed on their respective sites without any pre-order date. These platforms are also expected to make standard edition and Digital Edition of the PS5 live on the same date, October 25. PlayStation 5 was launched globally last year in November and reached India earlier this year. The PS5 is priced at Rs. 49,990 for the standard edition, while the Digital Edition costs Rs. 39,990. PS5 vs Xbox Series X: Which is the best "next-gen" console in India? We discussed this on Orbital, the Gadgets 360 podcast. Orbital is available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, and wherever you get your podcasts.

News A sword believed to have belonged to a crusader knight about 900 years ago has been found by an amateur diver off Israel's northern coast. The one-metre blade (3.3ft) blade was discovered by Shlomi Katzin and handed over to the authorities. It is thought the sword, which is encrusted with marine organisms, resurfaced after the shifting of sands. The Israel Antiques Authority (IAA) said that once cleaned and analysed it would be put on public display. "The sword, which has been preserved in perfect condition, is a beautiful and rare find and evidently belonged to a crusader knight," said IAA's Robbery Prevention Unit Inspector Nir Distelfeld. "It is exciting to encounter such a personal object, taking you 900 years back in time to a different era, with knights, armour and swords." Kobi Sharvit, who heads the IAA's Marine Archaeology Unit, said the Carmel coast, where the blade was found, provided shelter for ships during storms throughout centuries of shipping activity along the coast. "These conditions have attracted merchant ships down the ages, leaving behind rich archaeological finds," he said. Crusaders fought in a series of religious wars known as the Crusades, which were sanctioned by the Roman Catholic Church in the medieval period. The most commonly known of the Crusades were campaigns in the eastern Mediterranean aimed at recovering the Holy Land from Muslim rule.

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-58962007 Two adults and two children have been taken to hospital after an explosion at a South Ayrshire housing estate. Police say four homes were caught up in the blast. Witnesses said at least one terraced house was destroyed, with those on either side of the property also damaged. The explosion was reported in the Kincaidston area of Ayr at 19:10 on Monday and was heard for miles around. Inquiries are ongoing to establish the cause of the blast. Scottish Gas Networks said they were ensuring the site around the "serious explosion" was made safe. The area has been evacuated, with two local rest centres set up to provide shelter to those that needed it. The fire service said nine appliances and specialist resources, including an air ambulance, attended the incident. A man who lives about 100m from the explosion site told the BBC that his whole house shook with the force of the blast. Kerr McCann was one of the first on the scene. He was arriving home when saw a "massive plume of fire" in the sky, over the street. He said: "Immediately after I felt a big bang, I knew it was an explosion. I was in the army so I know what explosions are. "I ran up, about a quarter of a mile away... There was fire in the back garden and pretty much in where the house was. "The house was not where it was, it was scattered about the street." Mr McCann said he and other people who had run to help were removed from the area for their own safety shortly after. He added: "The whole house has disappeared, the gable end of the other house is opened up and there's cars with windows put in from the shrapnel. "Passing the shop on the way back I heard people saying stuff came off the shelves from the explosion." Caroline Finnett, who lives in Kincaidston, was playing bingo at a friend's house when she heard a "massive bang". She heard sirens and saw smoke billowing, so made her way back home. Her street was littered with broken roof tiles. She told BBC Scotland: "We walked up to where the house has been blown away, and it was horrendous - was like something from a movie set. It was overwhelming. "The house's gone." Ms Finnett then took hot food to the community centre where those affected are sheltering, and offered up her spare room to anyone who needed it.

Big French cars. I’m not talking about adapted vans or even the wonderful old-model Renault Espace, but those great big saloons and hatches designed to shame the boring Germans. Are they worth a go? Well, it is worth daring to be different, even if you do have to be prepared for the worst. My local garage used to be a Citroën main agent, who had to explain to owners of old high-spec XMs that it was a £30k car when brand new so fixing them isn’t necessarily cheap. Remember that. Sticking with Citroën, the obvious choice is the C6. You might be super-scared of one, like me, but there are some big-mileage examples up for grabs, which I always find very reassuring. So let’s go for a cheap and cheerful one with a whopping 188,000 miles on the clock: a 2006 2.7 HDi V6 Exclusive that’s up for £2795. There’s lots to go wrong, but it is with a dealer, who is obliged to make sure that it all works. Otherwise, there’s another Exclusive but from 2009 with a full service history and a barely believable 35,000 miles – for a fairly whopping £8995. It’s worth it, though, because we will never see its like again. Sadly. We can always go old-school if we don’t want to take too much of a chance. The Peugeot 605 is a straightforward and stylish way to travel, but they’re becoming increasingly difficult to find. Still, you won’t have to pay much and they will mostly be HDis. I saw a great 2002 SE-spec automatic with leather and everything, 109,000 miles and three previous owners at a dealer. The asking price was a very reasonable £1900 and it looked dead smart. Just for fun, I went on one of those European websites where they have about one picture and barely any details and just expect you to turn up and buy. I was extremely tempted to get on a ferry to Belgium, where a magnificent 605 V6 manual petrol lived. It had covered a kilometre-converted 93,000 miles and was up for the euro equivalent of £1287. When it comes to Renault, the Vel Satis and Avantime are the two oddities that always spring to mind, but the firm’s last proper traditional barge was the Safrane. These seem to be almost obsolete. You can find some real cheapies, but I rather liked a 1998 2.5 V6 automatic with just 42,000 miles and a seemingly optimistic £2500 asking price. Another option is to hop over the Channel, where the choice of left-hooker Safranes is far bigger. What I really loved was a 1994 Biturbo in the Netherlands, a properly rare super-saloon as only 806 were built. So the almost £16k asking was probably fairly reasonable for that particular big French car. BMW 320, mileage - 85,555: I did the decent thing and went online to print off my MOT and look at the recent history. Oh, yes, and make a note of the advisories, if any. Well, it is an old motor, but actually the garage fixed all the outstanding bits, such as the ball joint. However, there was a report on the front jacking points last time and I know they are still a bit crumbly. I’m not quite sure how far to go with the old girl. Meanwhile, I booked the Flying Pig in for an MOT and a once-over but the garage’s new mechanic had heart failure when I said it was a Cayenne. Essentially, doesn’t he know who I am? Apparently not.
