Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 beta dates and times By Lauren Morton The Modern Warfare 2 beta starts this weekend for PC players. t's nearly launch month for one of the more confusingly-named CoD games yet and, like last year, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 beta is taking place over multiple weekends for different subsets of players. "This is already the best CoD has played recently in terms of sound, feel, movement, and feedback," our staff writer Morgan Park said after putting in time on the beta last weekend on PlayStation. "Modern Warfare 2 has that extra sprinkle of tacticool magic that was sorely missed in CoD's last two years of Cold War fan fiction and bland WW2 rehashes." If you're ready to find out how it plays yourself, the good news is that your time is nearly here. Unsurprisingly, having a pre-order for the game will get you in earliest. However, this weekend is the true open beta for all platforms, which is when PC players who want to try before they buy will get to play. Here's how and when to play in the Modern Warfare 2 beta: CLOSE When does the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 beta start? The Modern Warfare 2 beta kicked off first for PlayStation players who pre-ordered the game on Friday, September 16 and was open to all PlayStation players on September 18 - 20. The MW2 beta opens up to all platforms on Saturday, September 24 at 10 am PT / 6 pm BST and ends on Monday, September 26. Starting Saturday, anyone on all available platforms can download and play in the cross-platform multiplayer weekend. Similar to the PlayStation exclusive weekend, players who've pre-ordered the game either on Xbox or through Battle.net or Steam can start two days before that on September 22. Here's how all the dates shake out depending on your platform and pre- order status: September 16 - 17: PlayStation pre-order players September 18 - 20: All PlayStation players September 22 - 23: All PlayStation players and Xbox/PC pre-orders September 24 - 26: All players on all platforms Based on feedback from the first beta weekend on PlayStation, Infinity Ward says it has fixed several crashing bugs, exploits, map geography, and bugs related to gunsmith progression. You can see the rest of the known feedback in IW's weekend two beta post. You'll also be able to earn a total of 10 in-game rewards by leveling up during the beta weekends. Level 15 will net you a "Side Impact" weapon blueprint, level 18 the "Collision" operator skin, and a tank skin and another weapon skin come in at levels 26 and 30 respectively. You can catch the rest of the rewards in Infinity Ward's post. https://www.pcgamer.com/modern-warfare-2-beta-access/

U.S. tourist killed in Bahamas shark attack The 58-year-old Pennsylvania woman, identified by her employer as Caroline DiPlacido, was snorkeling with her family when a bull shark attacked, officials said. Sept. 6, 2022, 11:32 PM WAT / Updated Sept. 7, 2022, 9:24 PM WAT By Anthony Cusumano and Dennis Romero An American tourist was killed in a shark attack Tuesday in the Bahamas. The woman was snorkeling with a group of five to seven relatives when a bull shark attacked her shortly after 2 p.m. at Green Cay, Royal Bahamas Police Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings said at a news conference. The area is about a half-mile northwest of Rose Island, a private island off Nassau. While authorities have not released the victim's name, the woman's employer identified her as Caroline DiPlacido. The employer, Gannon University, said she was vacationing with her family in the Bahamas at the time of the attack. "Caroline was a powerful presence of kindness and friendship to colleagues, students, and the wider community and cherished many family ties to Gannon," the school's chaplain said in a message to the university, where DiPlacido was a project coordinator for the Erie campus' office of community and government relations. "The news is devastating, and she will be missed." A boat docked off Rose Island in the Bahamas following deadly shark attack on Sept. 6, 2022. Mike Russell via Facebook The woman, who officials said was 58, had no vital signs after the attack, Skippings said. She arrived in the Bahamas on a cruise ship Tuesday morning, Skippings said. A private tour boat took her group snorkeling off Rose Island. Family members witnessed the attack. Along with a tour operator, they pulled her from the water and took her by boat to Fort Montagu on Nassau, Skippings said. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/us-tourist-killed-bahamas-shark-attack-rcna46561

KEY POINTS Train New Jersey Gov. James Florio, who championed a plan that substantially raised the state's sales and income taxes leading to his reelection defeat in 1993, died Sunday. He was 85. A Democrat, he made three unsuccessful runs for the governor before finally succeeding in 1989, when he defeated Republican Jim Courter and became the first Italian-American to serve as the state's chief executive. Florio drew sharp criticism in 1990 when he pushed a $2.8 billion tax increase through the state Legislature that extended a sales tax to, among other things, toilet paper. Before becoming governor, Florio served four years in the state Assembly and 15 years in the House of Representatives. Train New Jersey Gov. James Florio, who championed a plan that substantially raised the state's sales and income taxes leading to his reelection defeat in 1993, died Sunday. He was 85. His law partner Doug Steinhardt and current New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy confirmed Florio died in statements on Monday. “Governor Florio was a fighter who never backed down. He was a leader who cared more about the future of New Jersey than his own political fortunes,” Murphy, a fellow Democrat, said in a statement. Florio was a longtime public servant who held numerous posts on the local, county, state and federal levels. It spawned massive vote resentment and spurred the formation of Hands Across New Jersey, an anti-tax grass roots group that used rolls of toilet paper as its symbol. Florio was ousted after one term by Republican Christie Whitman, who tapped into voting anger over the tax hike and won the race by about 26,000 votes. Before becoming governor, Florio served four years in the state Assembly and 15 years in the House of Representatives. In 2000, he unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, losing to investment banker Jon Corzine in one of the most expensive Senate primaries in history. Corzine went on to win the Senate seat that year and held it until he won the governor's office in 2005. Long after he left office, Florio continued to be an active voice and weighed in on several issues. He was a regular in the halls of the statehouse during legislative sessions. In February 2015, Florio and three other former New Jersey governors urged the state senate to delay a vote on Gov. Chris Christie's nominee for a southern New Jersey panel that oversees a million-acre pine reserve. The ex-governors claimed the nomination would “undermine the independence” of the commission, but the senate eventually approved the nominee for the job. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Florio attended Trenton State College (now known as The College of New Jersey) and graduated from the Rutgers School of Law in 1967. He also served as an officer in the Navy from 1955 to 1958 and continued as a reservist until 1975, eventually achieving the rank of lieutenant commander. https://www.cnbc.com/2022/09/26/former-nj-governor-us-representative-james-jim-florio-dies-at-85.html

Car makers and the government are being advised to provide clearer information about electric vehicles after a recent study showed 38% of drivers know little or nothing about how much they cost to run. The survey of 2200 UK adults, conducted for World EV Day, suggested attitudes towards electric vehicles were generally positive. Two thirds (64%) of drivers said they would consider an EV for their next car. Less than half said the same about diesel. Running costs (excluding the cost of the vehicle itself) were the top priority for car buyers. In the survey, 91% said running costs were an important factor when choosing their next vehicle, and this was slightly higher (93%) among potential EV drivers, outranking environmental benefits, range and convenient refuelling or recharging. However, 53% of drivers said choosing an electric vehicle was confusing, and only 26% who are considering getting one expected running costs to be lower than for a petrol or diesel car. The results highlight some significant knowledge gaps. Less than half of those surveyed (47%) expected electric vehicles to offer a tax saving, despite EVs qualifying for zero-rate vehicle excise duty (regardless of list price) and an ultra-low 2% company car tax band, compared with at least 25% for petrol or diesel models. Even among those who said running costs were an important factor, 23% didn’t know whether electric vehicles’ servicing and maintenance costs were lower, 15% were unsure if they avoided clean air zone charges, 14% were unaware of tax incentives, and 13% didn’t know how the cost of electricity compared with petrol or diesel costs. Drivers also reported struggling with other important information. Range was the third most common influence on vehicle choice, with two thirds (65%) of drivers noting that this was improving and 44% adding that they could do most journeys on a single charge. However, almost half (46%) said published data was hard to understand, and this was even higher among those who had researched electric vehicles in detail (58%) or already drive one (59%). In turn, 50% expected to get less than the manufacturers’ stated range, and 56% said that this would put them off getting an electric vehicle altogether. Neill Emmett, head of marketing at LeasePlan UK and the study’s project lead, said: “Most EV models work out cheaper than diesel or petrol cars due to the lower whole-life costs. “We urgently need greater access to more financially attainable vehicles [and] continue to educate people about the cheaper running costs of an EV – even in the current economic environment – to tackle many of the common misconceptions we’re seeing.” https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/company-cars/drivers-still-sceptical-about-electric-vehicle-savings
