https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-66800144 A law enforcement dog caught a fugitive as he tried to crawl away in thick underbrush two weeks after his escape from a prison in the US state of Pennsylvania, authorities have said. Danelo Cavalcante, 34, was arrested in a wooded area after an aircraft picked up his heat signal overnight. More than 500 officers hunted him down after he escaped on 31 August. He was sentenced last month to life for killing his ex-girlfriend in front of her two young children in April 2021. At a news conference, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said Cavalcante was "apprehended with no shots fired" shortly after 08:00 local time (12:00 GMT) on Wednesday. He credited the "extraordinary work" of law enforcement and "a tremendous assist from members of the public" for Cavalcante's capture. Heat signal sparked scramble to snare US prisoner Police told reporters that a search team of mounted patrols, dogs and aircraft had fanned out over the woods of South Coventry Township through rain and thunder overnight. Law enforcement were drawn closer to Cavalcante by a burglar alarm at a home. A Drug Enforcement Administration plane picked up a heat signal on the ground at 01:00, but the aircraft had to fly away because of the foul weather. Media caption, Watch: The Pennsylvania manhunt... two weeks in 100 seconds A tactical team of around two dozen officers began closing in on the heat source at around 04:00, ultimately pinpointing Cavalcante four hours later. Pennsylvania State Police Lt Colonel George Bivens told the news conference: "They were able to move in very quietly. They had the element of surprise. "Cavalcante did not realise he was surrounded until that had occurred. That did not stop him from trying to escape. "He began to crawl through thick underbrush taking his [stolen] rifle with him as he went." A US Customs and Border Protection unit from Texas, with at least one dog, was part of the tactical team. The dog "subdued" Cavalcante as he tried to make his getaway, leaving him with a "minor bite wound". "He continued to resist but was forcibly taken into custody," said Lt Col Bivens. Cavalcante was left with "a scalp wound" and will be "medically assessed" before being taken to a prison facility, said officials. He will appear in court on a felony escape charge in the near future, Philadelphia's attorney general said in a statement. Danelo Cavalcante Local media footage shows a handcuffed Cavalcante, in a dirty Philadelphia Eagles sweatshirt, being escorted to an armoured black police van. A large team of officers in camouflage uniforms is seen posing for photos with their captive before cutting him out of the hoodie and loading him into the vehicle. Lt Col Bivens said he was "not bothered at all" that officers had taken the picture. "Those men and women work amazingly hard through some very trying circumstances. They're proud of their work," he told reporters. Chester County's three commissioners said in a joint statement that Cavalcante's capture "ends the nightmare of the past two weeks". They said prison officials had made "some immediate changes to bolster security in the prison", including hiring new security contractors. Just a week after being sentenced to life without parole, Cavalcante "crab-walked" between two walls and scaled a razor-wire fence to escape Chester County Prison, about 30 miles (50km) west of Philadelphia, where he had been awaiting transfer to a different facility. His method of escape was the same used by another inmate, Igor Bolte, in May. The glaring security lapse at the prison and the lone fugitive's evasion of a manhunt involving officers equipped with night-vision goggles, dogs, drones and aerial support for a fortnight embarrassed the authorities. Residents of Chester County had been on edge amid multiple recent sightings, with one local TV station even reporting an uptick in sales at gun shops. While on the run, police said Cavalcante had tried to contact associates, including his sister. She did not help him and was later taken into custody for an immigration violation. On Tuesday, they warned that the escaped murderer had entered an open garage in the area and fled with a .22 calibre rifle as the homeowner fired several shots in his direction. Family members of the ex-girlfriend he murdered, Deborah Brandão, have been under 24-hour police protection.

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/nvidia-ceo-shares-management-style-always-learn-make-no-plans Nvidia this year became the world's most valuable semiconductor company with a value of over $1 trillion. The company earns more money than Intel and other tech giants, and yet Jensen Huang's management style is quite unconventional, as it turns out, with no long-term planning and 40 direct reports, among other interesting tidbits. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang outlined his management philosophy in an interview with Joel Hellermark conducted earlier this year (and recently noticed by analyst Dan Hockenmaier), giving a unique insight into the radically different way that Huang manages his company. Huang avoids typical hierarchical communication and maintains a flat organizational structure, with as many as 40 direct reports. Meanwhile, he avoids 1:1 meetings, preferring group discussions that ensure everyone is on the same level, starting right from the top. Huang places a strong emphasis on continuous learning and staying updated with the latest trends and innovations in the industry. One of the ways he does this is by surrounding himself with knowledgeable individuals who are willing to share their expertise. Meetings at Nvidia are not restricted by rank or position. Everyone, from VPs to entry-level employees, has access to all information and can join any meeting, according to Huang. Huang's philosophy revolves around the idea that if there's a strategic direction or decision to be made, why limit the information to a select few? "If there is a strategic direction, why do you tell one person," Huang asked rhetorically. "You tell everybody, and so after, we are swimming in the soup of strategizing and how to formulate the path to the future. When the time comes, I will send it out to everybody at the same time, or I will tell everybody at the same time, and people will give me feedback, and we will refine it." Share Strategic Directions, No Solid Plans By sharing the strategic direction of the company with everyone, Huang says he opens the door for feedback from various perspectives. This collective approach is designed to harness the intelligence and expertise of the entire organization, leading to refined and well-thought-out strategies. When it comes to strategies, Nvidia certainly follows its own path. In terms of planning, Huang believes that rigid long-term plans can sometimes be restrictive. Therefore, he doesn't set long-term or short-term plans. Instead, the company adopts a flexible approach, constantly re-evaluating its strategies based on the ever-evolving business and market conditions, according to Huang. This is particularly crucial given the rapid advancements in the field of AI, where adaptability can be a significant advantage. "We don't do a periodic planning system," said Huang. "The reason for that is because the world is a living, breathing thing. So, we just plan continuously; there is no five-year plan, there is no one-year plan, there is no plan — there is just what we are doing." To speed up the decision-making process and stay up-to-date with realities, Huang gave up usual status reports. He feels that by the time status updates reach him, they often lose their "ground truth" (original essence and authenticity). To counteract this, he encourages any employee to email him their immediate 'top five things' on their mind. Every morning, he dedicates time to reading around 100 of these emails, ensuring he is in touch with the ground realities of his company. Think Outside the Box, Leave Commodity Markets Huang says the core mission of Nvidia is to tackle challenges that are on the edge of what's currently possible, pushing the envelope of what conventional computers can achieve rather than solving regular computing problems. In fact, Huang believes in walking away from businesses or sectors that have become commoditized, which is why Nvidia left the smartphone and tablet SoC market a few years ago. Huang feels this approach drives technological advancements and sets Nvidia apart from rivals. However, making decisions that deviate from the norm or established playbooks can be challenging. Instead of following established practices, Huang suggests breaking down problems into their fundamental truths and building solutions from there, saying this approach encourages innovative thinking and often leads to groundbreaking solutions that traditional methods might overlook. Another way Huang says he deviates from established practices is by trusting his intuition to 'make the right decisions at the right time.' Huang describes Nvidia's organizational structure as having three primary objectives: attracting the best talent in the industry, operating with a lean and efficient team, and ensuring that information flows swiftly and effectively throughout the company. The merits of different management styles often come with many tradeoffs, and we don't get to see that side of the picture in the one-sided description. However, it is clear that Huang's unique style is designed to retain much of the flexibility you would see with a start-up, as opposed to the rigid hierarchical organizations at large incumbents that often become mired down in internal bureaucracy and then begin to stagnate. Nvidia is experiencing rapid growth now as it has essentially cornered many aspects of the explosive GPU market, but how this streamlined management style will work as the company becomes larger remains a question, along with whether or not a successor could succeed in replicating the approach.

https://techxplore.com/news/2023-08-people-virtual-reality.html People with vivid imaginations are more likely than others to believe they truly inhabit the worlds they visit in virtual reality (VR) according to new research led by the University of Bath. This finding, published at this year's CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems lays the foundation for software developers to improve VR applications by tailoring them to the personalities of individual players. There has been a long-held assumption that the quality of a user's VR equipment directly improves the quality of their VR experience. In other words, the better and more expensive the VR headset and screen, the more convincing the experience. However, the new Bath study suggests that when it comes to feeling present in a virtual world, the nature of an individual's imagination may be just as important as, if not more important than, the quality of equipment. "We found imagination is an important component in the formation of presence: the better a person's imagination, the more able they are to find themselves in that world," said Dr. Christopher Clarke, researcher from the Department of Computer Science at Bath and study co-author. Beyond gaming The implications of this research extend beyond gaming: in the years ahead, VR is expected to play a significant role in many areas of life, from workplace training to medical rehabilitation programs. "This is definitely an area that needs more exploration if people and organizations are to integrate VR into their lives," said Dr. Clarke. This new research, which involved academics from the universities of Bath, Bristol and King's College London, set out to understand how differences in imaginative "suggestibility" mean some people get a lot more from VR than others. The study is believed to be the first to examine the role of imagination in making a person feel truly present in a virtual world. Imaginative suggestibility describes the ability to successfully experience an imaginary scenario as if it were real. This concept has been primarily investigated in the context of hypnosis, with those high in imaginative suggestibility also proving more susceptible to being placed in a hypnotic trance. The researchers hypothesized that imaginative suggestibility played a significant role in the development of 'presence' in VR. Elaborating, Dr. Crescent Jicol, Bath computer science researcher and lead author of the paper, said, "Different people imagine sensations, colors, images, sounds and smells at very different levels of vividness. So, if I say, 'Your hand is under a constant stream of water', you'll be able to imagine this very differently depending on your imaginative suggestibility. The easier you find it to imagine such a scenario, the more present you'll be in VR." Presence—the feeling of being "in" the virtual world—is important for how we experience VR. It comes in three sub-types: Physical presence: the feeling that a virtual space is in fact real. Social presence: the feeling that the other characters in the virtual world are real. Self presence: the feeling that you are the avatar you embody in the virtual world. Dr. Jicol said, "Presence is instrumental to a variety of VR applications, from those meant for entertainment such as games, to applications for learning, training, and rehabilitation. Research into presence—how it works and how to increase it—is one of the leading areas of VR research. Yet much of this exploration has focused on the technology behind VR." Dr. Jicol added, "What makes these findings particularly remarkable is that imaginative suggestibility affected presence across all three sub types. This could mean that regardless of what you are using VR for—from socializing to adventuring—your imagination is playing an important role." The researchers believe that by examining how psychological factors such as imaginative suggestibility can transform the effects of technology, developers will be in a position to design better virtual worlds for any application. The VR market is one of the fastest growing sectors in technology. Technological challenges, such as the weight of the headset, are well-known and are being actively worked upon by hardware developers. However, until now, personality characteristics that might dissuade some people from using and engaging with the technology have been underexplored. The Bath research into imaginative suggestibility takes an important step in addressing this.

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-66770842 The government is facing pressure to take stronger action against Beijing, after a parliamentary researcher was arrested amid accusations he spied for China. Senior Conservative MPs have called for China to be categorised as a threat, a move backed by some cabinet ministers. Rishi Sunak raised concerns about interference from Beijing with China's premier while at the G20 in India. The prime minister said an open dialogue with China was necessary. Police confirmed on Saturday that two men, one in his 20s and another in his 30s, were arrested under the Official Secrets Act in March. Sources have told the BBC one of them was a parliamentary researcher involved in international affairs issues. As first reported in the Sunday Times, it is understood the researcher had links to several Conservative MPs. The BBC has approached him for a response but is not naming him. Both men have been released on bail, and the Met's Counter Terrorism Command, which oversees espionage-related offences, is investigating. China spy claims as Parliament researcher arrested Spy claims turbocharge debate on UK's China stance UK approach to China spy threat inadequate - report The Sunday Times reported the researcher had links to security minister Tom Tugendhat and foreign affairs committee chairwoman Alicia Kearns, among others. The arrest of the parliamentary researcher has renewed a debate which has been raging in the Conservative Party for months: Should the government take a stricter approach on China? Ministers have so far resisted branding Beijing a threat. The UK's Foreign Secretary James Cleverly visited Beijing in August - the first such visit in five years - and told the BBC it would not be "credible" to disengage. But there are growing calls for a rethink. Senior Tory backbenchers, including former leader Iain Duncan Smith and MP Tim Loughton, have called for the government to act. Mr Duncan Smith said it was "time for us to recognise the deepening threat that the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) under (President) Xi now pose". And Mr Loughton warned about "how far the tentacles of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) reach into British institutions". "Yet again the security of Parliament has potentially been compromised, reinforcing how we cannot view the CCP as anything other than a hostile foreign threat." Some cabinet ministers, such as Home Secretary Suella Braverman, are understood to support a tightening of the rules too. Mr Sunak said on Sunday that he had raised "very strong concerns" about any interference in British democracy with China's Premier Li Qiang. But he also said the UK should not be "carping from the side-lines" and it was better to be in the room raising concerns. Justice Secretary Alex Chalk defended the current stance towards China on BBC One's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme, He said the UK was right to "engage" with the country but Mr Sunak had highlighted the need to "proceed with caution". Parliament's Intelligence and Security Committee issued a long-awaited report in July, warning the government had been slow to come to terms with the security risks from Beijing. "It appears that China has a high level of intent to interfere with the UK government, targeting officials and bodies at a range of levels to influence UK political thinking and decision-making relevant to China," the report said.

https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/66637879 Luis Rubiales has resigned as president of the Spanish Football Federation following criticism for kissing Spain forward Jenni Hermoso at the Women's World Cup final presentation ceremony. Hermoso, 33, said the kiss after Spain beat England was not consensual and she filed a legal complaint last Tuesday. Rubiales said he had submitted his resignation to federation acting president Pedro Rocha in a statement. "I cannot continue my work," he told Piers Morgan on his television show. The 46-year-old has also resigned from his position as vice-president of Uefa's executive committee. The fallout from the kiss has engulfed Spanish football in recent weeks and overshadowed Spain's World Cup win, with Rubiales ignoring repeated calls to resign. On Friday, a prosecutor filed a complaint with Spain's high court - following Hermoso's testimony on Tuesday - against Rubiales for sexual assault and coercion. Rubiales claimed the kiss was "mutual and "consensual" but had been provisionally suspended by football's world governing body Fifa. "After the quick suspension carried out by Fifa, plus the rest of open proceedings against me, it is evident that I will not be able to return to my position," Rubiales' statement read. "Insisting on waiting and holding on is not going to contribute to anything positive, neither to the federation nor to Spanish football." The kiss that shook Spanish & global football Rubiales said he hoped his departure would boost Spain's joint bid with Morocco and Portugal to host the 2030 World Cup. He added: "I have faith in the truth and I will do everything in my power to prevail. "My daughters, my family and the people who love me have suffered the effects of excessive persecution, as well as many falsehoods, but it is also true that on the street, more and more every day, the truth is prevailing." Some 81 Spain players, including all 23 World Cup winners, said they would not play for the national team again while Rubiales was in his position. World Cup-winning manager Jorge Vilda - considered a close ally of Rubiales - was sacked on 5 September amid the scandal, with Montse Tome named as his successor. Politicians, footballers and celebrities have spoken out against Rubiales, while protesters gathered at the federation's headquarters last month to demand his resignation. Asked by Morgan whether something in particular finally led him to resign, Rubiales said he spoke to his family and listened to the advice of friends. "My father, my daughters, I spoke with them - they know it's not a question about me - and some friends very close to me said to me 'Luis, you need to focus on your dignity and to continue your life because if not, you are going to damage people you love and the sport you love'," Rubiales said. "This was a question of not only me. An attitude towards me can affect third parties [that are] very important. It was the intelligent thing that I had to do." Rubiales awaits high court decision Hermoso's complaint was one of sexual assault but Marta Durantez Gil has also added an allegation of coercion when filing to the high court after the forward told the prosecutor her relatives had been pressured by Rubiales and his "professional entourage" to say she "justified and approved what happened". It is now up to the court to present formal charges against Rubiales. Prior to the kiss, Rubiales had been seen grabbing his crotch in the proximity of Queen Letizia and her daughter while celebrating Spain's 1-0 win over England in Sydney. A high court judge will now assess the complaint and decide whether to accept or archive the request. If accepted, a magistrate will be assigned to lead an investigation, which will conclude either with a recommendation for the case to go to trial or be dismissed. The charge of sexual assault under Spanish law can carry a punishment ranging from a fine to four years in prison. "The high court often tackles crimes with an international dimension, such as terrorism or organised crime. It is involved in this case because the alleged assault by Mr Rubiales took place in Australia," BBC Madrid correspondent Guy Hedgecoe explained. Spanish prosecutors opened a preliminary investigation on 28 August, looking into whether the incident amounts to a crime of sexual assault. At the time, Spain's top criminal court said it was opening its investigation in light of the "unequivocal nature" of 33-year-old Hermoso's statements, saying it was necessary "to determine their legal significance". Earlier this month, Spain's national sports tribunal (TAD) opened a misconduct case against him, ruling he had committed a "serious offence" by kissing Hermoso. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/fashion/dia-mirza-recycled-outfit-sustainable-fashion-planet-india-8933075/lite/ Dia Mirza is a true-blue sustainability queen, from being awarded ‘Greenpreneur of the Year 2023’ to opting for environmentally-friendly fashion choices. Her commitment to a greener and better Earth knows no bounds. Recently, for the launch of Planet India, a visual storytelling initiative to celebrate India’s solutions to the climate and nature crisis, Dia chose a completely recycled outfit from the shelves of Tilla by Aratrik Dev Varman. Styled by costume designer and celebrity stylist, Theia Tekchandaney, Dia wore a oversized midi dress, teamed with a cape-length jacket. The Prussian blue long dress featured geometric patterns in shades of white with a long full-sleeve shrug. She accessorised it with silver oxidised jhumkas and black shoes. With her tresses done in soft curls and subtle makeup, including black eyeliner, mascara-laden eyelashes, contoured cheeks and nude lipstick, she completed her look! Thanking the designer for making a difference, she talked about the ‘Recycled Project’ — a zero-waste project by Tilla in collaboration with Soach, an NGO in Gujarat, India. “It generates sustained work for a group of women in Pindharada and nearby villages while encouraging them to explore their own artistic expression,” she wrote. “The project uses cutting fallouts from our workshop, which the women sew into patchwork textiles for clothing and quilts. By incorporating these scrap fabrics into new designs, we ensure no part of the labour that has gone into their making is wasted.” This is not the first time Dia has made a statement in sustainable clothing. Previously, the actor donned a printed ‘bloom-moon’ co-ord set from sustainable fashion brand, Ekastories, for a meeting with the CEO of Wildlife Trust of India last year. Her co-ord set featured a pastel orange blazer and pair of matching straight-fit pants, adorned with digitally-printed floral motifs throughout the ensemble. She let the outfit do the talking and opted for minimal jewellery and brown flats. Her sleek hairdo and nude makeup finished her look!
