  1. There are a lot of great DnD games on PC, but sadly one of them will be leaving soon as the Tales from Candlekeep: Tomb of Annihilation Steam version is being pulled from the storefront. It’s your last chance to pick up this Dungeons & Dragons Candlekeep strategy game before it’s gone forever. It’s not quite a full Dungeons & Dragons RPG game like Baldur’s Gate or even an attempt to recreate the D&D experience – for that, you’d be better off with something like Solasta: Lost Valley – but Tales from Candlekeep: Tomb of Annihilation is instead an adaptation of the tabletop game. It’s currently sitting on a ‘mostly positive’ rating from over 1,500 reviews on Steam, but after five years it seems that developer BKOM Studios’ licence to use the D&D IP has expired. Consequently, Tomb of Annihilation is leaving Steam on May 20. Anyone who picks it up before it leaves will have access after It’s pulled, and it’s currently on sale for 85% off at £1.79 / $2.39, or the complete edition with all DLC for 77% off at £5.71 / $7.76. Check out the trailer below to see if you’re interested. It’s always sad when games get pulled from Steam, but at least we have some warning this time.

  4. Student teams from Decent Children Model Presidency School, Punjab and VIT, Tamil Nadu were selected among 91 teams, including 58 colleges and 33 high schools. Two Indian student groups have won the NASA 2022 Human Exploration Rover Challenge to recognise a new generation of potential space explorers. Announced by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration during a virtual awards ceremony on April 29, the challenge involved as many as 91 teams, including 58 colleges and 33 high schools. Decent Children Model Presidency School from Punjab was the winner of the STEM Engagement Award in the High School division. The team from Vellore Institute of Technology in Tamil Nadu was declared the winner in the College/University division in the Social Media Award, a media release said. The challenge required US and international student teams to design, engineer, and test a human-powered rover on a course simulating terrain found on rocky bodies in the solar system. The teams also performed mission assignments, including sample retrievals and spectrographic analysis, while negotiating the course. High school and college teams competed in multiple categories for design, documentation, and presentation, including the safety award, project review award, and many more. "This year, students were asked to design a course that would mimic obstacles as if they were competing in Huntsville," Aundra Brooks-Davenport, activity lead for the challenge at Marshall Space Flight Centre in Huntsville, Alabama, said on Tuesday. "Ensuring team safety was a major factor in developing the design of their own obstacles. We are excited about the virtual competition and the opportunity it provided our teams," Brooks-Davenport said. The challenge is managed by NASA's Office of STEM Engagement. It uses challenges and competitions to further the agency's goal of encouraging students to pursue degrees and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.
  5. Open source software developers’ reputations could be abused to spread malicious NPM packages without their knowledge or consent, security researchers have revealed. On April 26, the cybersecurity team at Aqua’s Team Nautilus published a security advisory on the issue, which “allowed threat actors to masquerade a malicious package as legitimate and trick unsuspecting developers into installing it”. Until recently, GitHub’s NPM platform allowed any developer to be added to a project as a maintainer without their permission – a potential blind spot that threat actors could readily weaponize. If an attacker “carefully handpicks” trusted and po[CENSORED]r maintainers, then adds them – without their approval – to a malicious package, this could make a package appear legitimate and encourage users to download it, said the researchers. This technique has been dubbed “package planting” by Team Nautilus. Logic flaw “For instance, the package lodash is highly po[CENSORED]r and credible,” the researchers say. “If we add its owners Mathias, jdalton, and bnjmnt4n to a new, malicious package, many developers may be tricked into thinking that this package is legitimate and even appealing.” Lodash, a JavaScript library for utility functions, has been downloaded over 42 million times and has more than 154,000 dependents. Developers whose reputations are exploited in this way would not be made aware that they were added as package maintainers due to a logic flaw in NPM’s invitation mechanism. Furthermore, a threat actor could, in theory, add a po[CENSORED]r maintainer to a malicious package and then report them for illicit activities – potentially undermining their reputation. The logic issue was reported to GitHub’s bug bounty platform via HackerOne on February 10, and a fix was deployed on April 26 in the form of a new confirmation mechanism. Read more of the latest software supply chain attack news Adding a new maintainer to an NPM project without their approval is no longer possible. “It’s important to use reliable sources for any third-party components and to secure your environment with solutions that can detect software supply chain threats such as package planting,” the researchers commented. “NPM users should check that all the packages that are listed under their name truly belong to them, to make sure they weren’t added to any projects without their consent.” Package Analysis project In related news, on April 28, Google announced its support for the Open Source Security Foundation's (OpenSSF) Package Analysis project, a prototype scheme for clamping down on the propagation of malicious NPM packages. The Package Analysis program is being developed to dynamically scan uploaded NPM packages for malicious signatures and to “identify when previously safe software begins acting suspiciously”. Google is a member of OpenSSF. The tech giant conducted a study of 200 malicious NPM packages uploaded over the course of a month and found that most attacks are based on typosquatting and dependency confusion techniques. “This effort is meant to improve the security of open source software by detecting malicious behavior, informing consumers selecting packages, and providing researchers with data about the ecosystem,” OpenSSF says. “Though the project has been in development for a while, it has only recently become useful following extensive modifications based on initial experiences.” The Daily Swig has reached out to GitHub and Aqua with additional queries and we will update this story if and when we hear back.

  7. The Halo Infinite Season 2 release date has finally arrived, which means it’s time to dig into the new Lone Wolves battle pass and new game modes. Season 2 adds new maps, new game modes, new events, and new narrative and themed events to the free-to-play game. Season 2 features two Lone Wolves narrative events, both of which last for two weeks. The first is called Interference, and runs May 3-15. The second, Alpha Pack, runs July 19 – August 1. During both events, you’ll be able to complete event challenges by playing the new Last Spartan Standing mode on Breaker, the new Big Team Battle map.Season 2 features two Lone Wolves narrative events, both of which last for two weeks. The first is called Interference, and runs May 3-15. The second, Alpha Pack, runs July 19 – August 1. During both events, you’ll be able to complete event challenges by playing the new Last Spartan Standing mode on Breaker, the new Big Team Battle map. Outside of the special events, however, there’s another 100-tier premium battle pass. If you purchase the premium pass, there are around 180 rewards to collect as you rank it up – but there are free rewards along the way for players who opt not to buy. Season 2 will also feature a new Fracture event called Entrenched, which will offer multiple opportunities to knock out additional event challenges and earn another set of cosmetic items. Here’s the trailer for season 2: The new Last Spartan Standing free-for-all mode pits 12 Spartans against each other, each with five respawns. Players get a predetermined loadout, but scoring points will allow you to power that up. However, like in a battle royale game, the play space gets progressively smaller over the course of the match. During the Interference and Alpha Pack limited-time events, Last Spartan Standing will take place on the new Breaker BTB map. Outside of those events, however, you’ll be able to play Last Spartan Standing in regular matchmaking and in custom games as well. It’s worth noting that if you own the premium battle pass for season 1, you can freely switch between that and the season 2 battle pass, depending on which one you want to work on. This only applies to the premium passes, however – the free passes expire at the end of their respective seasons.
  8. Happy birthday 🎈
  9. Apple Watch Series 8, expected to be launched later this year, has seen a lot of buzz around its upcoming features. Previous reports hinted at Apple working to include a feature to measure body temperature in the series. The rumours were first addressed by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who suggested that Apple might not bring the body temperature feature in Watch Series 8. However, in a series of recent tweet, TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that the company might be working on an algorithm to support the temperature sensing feature in the upcoming smartwatch. Kuo took to Twitter to explain why the body temperature feature didn't make it to Apple Watch Series 7. He stated that as the algorithm didn't support its qualification before reaching the Engineering Validation Testing stage, the feature couldn't be made to work on the watch. However, the company is planning to introduce the temperature measurement feature this year with the Apple Watch Series 8, if algorithm ends up supporting the requirement. The feature will enable the smartwatch to act as a thermometer and can help detect fever. Kuo also addressed the key issue that makes it difficult for smartwatches to ensure inclusion of body temperature sensing. “The challenge in implementing precise body temperature measurement is that skin temperature quickly varies depending on outside environments,” he explained. He added smartwatches fail to calculate core temperature measurement with its hardware alone. Hence, an excellent algorithm is required for smartwatches to include temperature sensing feature. Samsung, in Kuo's opinion, is facing a similar challenge, making it tough for them to introduce the feature. Kuo also refuted the rumours suggesting the support for body temperature measurement in Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 this year. Kuo's tweet has contradicted the report shared by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, where he mentioned that while the Cupertino-based company may add support for checking blood glucose levels and blood pressure levels, it will not be possible for Apple to add the body temperature feature in Apple Watch Series 8. However, Kuo's previous report from September last year also hinted at Apple's progress to offer new health management features. The Apple Watch Series 8 is expected to arrive mid-September this year, along with the launch of the iPhone 14 series.
  10. Software that can correlate musical changes in an audio recording of a song with perceived emotional content would be useful across the music industry, particularly in terms of cataloging music and developing music recommendation systems for streaming services and sales. The same approach might also have utility in musical composition and music teaching as well as in music-based therapy. Research in the International Journal of Arts and Technology, recognizes that there are numerous limitations in the current software and points the way forward to how such software might be improved. Yali Zhang of the School of Music at Henan Polytechnic in Zhengzhou, China, explains how earlier research has focused on training a probabilistic neural network to recognize the nuance of a piece of music and correlate it with the likely emotional responses intended by the composer. However, such work has large error margins that Zhang hopes to preclude in developing her new approach to music emotion recognition. Zhang's approach involves processing the music signal in order to obfuscate a proportion of the low-frequency information that is not necessarily a part of the music's emotional content. Her approach also frames the sound signal and then divides the frames by a window function so that they can be processed by the emotion recognition software. In addition, noise is reduced by time-domain endpoint detection, she adds. With the sound file thus pre-processed, the matter of recognition can begin and this involves analyzing pitch changes, the rise and fall of tone, and the rate at which those changes occur. Zhang explains that a "weight coefficient" of musical emotion can thus be extracted from a sound file. The characteristics thus extracted for known sound files with human-described emotive content can then be used to train the system so that it can automatically recognize the emotive content in a previously uncategorized piece of music. The approach reduces the error margins seen in earlier work considerably making the categorization of musical emotive content much more accurate.
  11. Thermaltake announced its first PC chassis with a built-in LCD screen, the Divider 550 TG Ultra. This new ATX Mid-Tower chassis measures 20.8 by 9.0 by 18.34 inches (530 by 230 by 466 millimeters) and weighs 22.4 pounds (10.16 kg), making it big enough for enthusiast builds. The standout feature of the Divider 550 TG Ultra is the 3.9-inch “Ultra Display” LCD screen on the case’s front. It gives users real-time information about the system like temperature, CPU frequency, and RAM frequency and it also allows users to upload custom images as a personal touch. Tempered glass panels enclose the chassis on three sides, including the left, right, and top, so that users can show off their build. Three 120-millimeter ARGB fans dominate the front to suck in cool air, and there’s another one on the rear to extract warm air from the system. Above the LCD screen sits the I/O panel with all the expected functions like the power and reset buttons with a pair of USB-A 3.0 ports and a single USB-C 3.2 port. There is also 3.5 millimeter audio in and out ports for headsets or speakers. Accessing the interior is easy and involves unscrewing the thumbscrews. The spacious interior includes bays for up to two 3.5-inch HDDs or a maximum of seven 2.5-inch SSDs.There’s space on the top for more cooling fans, and it can also accommodate 240 or 280-millimeter radiators for liquid cooling. The case has seven slots for add-on cards, and there’s a GPU riser bracket to support heavier GPUs. Users must first install the TT RGB Plus 2.0 app to set up the chassis. Once installed, it allows them to monitor system information and configure the RGB fans and information displayed on the Ultra Display screen. The Divider 550 TG Ultra is available from the Thermaltake website for $349.99.
  12. When Wrath of the Lich King arrives for World of Warcraft Classic, it’ll be making a few changes to the original version of the MMORPG’s landmark expansion. As we’ve already learned, dungeon finder won’t be included in the re-release of Wrath Classic. While that feature is going away, there’s a new one taking its place: more inclusive character customisation options in the barbershop. World of Warcraft Classic lead producer Holly Longdale tells us that barbershop customisation will go well beyond coiffure when Wrath of the Lich King comes to classic. “We knew we were going to bring the barbershop back, but when we were looking at it, it was literally a barbershop – you could only change your hair,” she says. “We’re not tied to that technical limitation that existed in 2008, so we looked at the spirit of what the barbershop was intended to do, which is to allow you to express yourself as you want to.” Longdale says the barbershop in Lich King Classic will give players the option to change their hairstyle, face, and gender – all changes you can make by paying a fee in gold. There are plans in the works to add additional options to the barbershop too, Longdale says, even if not all of them will be present at launch. We asked Longdale about the addition of Black and Asian facial options in the Shadowlands expansion, and she says it’s on the developers’ list of “please, we’ve got to do this.” “One hundred percent, we want to invest in that,” she says. “There’s a lot technically that we have to do to be able to bring that into Classic, but yeah, absolutely. It may not be at launch, but that’s what we want to do. We want to provide every opportunity we can for you to represent yourself in a way that feels good for you.” The Wrath of the Lich King release date for World of Warcraft Classic hasn’t been revealed yet, but Blizzard says it’ll be out this year.
  13. Cookie Run: Kingdom fans have reason to celebrate as another update has dropped into the adorable Cookie Kingdom. This time, players can expect two new cookies to join the squad, a new story mission, and updates to the arena. Kicking things off is the Wildberry Cookie, an Epic Defence Cookie who leads from the front. Filled with berries to the brim, Wildberry Cookie is Hollyberry Cookie’s bodyguard and will do anything to protect the kingdom. He has been voiced by Kamran Nikhad (Marvel Avengers Academy) in English, Tomoaki Maeno (Cells at Work!, Genshin Impact, Spider-man) in Japanese, and Bok-hyun Han in Korean. The second Cookie being introduced is Clotted Cream Cookie, another Epic Cookie, that belongs to the Magic class that is present in the middle of the squad. With its shiny golden hair, this handsome Cookie is the youngest addition to the Council of Nine Elders and the Consul of Crème Republic. Giving this character its voice is Aarom Dimsuke (Fullmetal Alchemist, My Hero Academia) in English, Akira Ishida (Naruto, Genshin Impact) in Japanese, and Kim Ji-yul (Demon Slayer, The God of High School) in Korean. The main story of Cookie Run: Kingdom is also expanding with the addition of The Cookie Odyssey. Dark Enchantress Cookie’s threat looms over the kingdom and Pure Vanilla Cookie has summoned the council of Ancient Heroes to protect them. As the story progresses, we will learn more about these heroes and how they will save the world. On May 3rd, players will be able to enjoy the beginning, called The Republic Trilogy.

  15. The world's first permanent NFT art museum has opened in Seattle, aiming to "pull back the curtain" on blockchain-based digital art. Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are a type of digital asset that has exploded in po[CENSORED]rity recently, with NFT artworks selling for millions of dollars. NFTs exist on a blockchain, a record of transactions kept on networked computers. The museum opened its doors on January 14, and has been providing an outlet for artists, creators, and collectors to display their NFTs in a physical setting, while aiming to educate the public about this fairly new market for digital art. "We really realized the impact of being able to look at this type of art in a way where you actually slow down, you see all the details," said Jennifer Wong, a co-founder and curator at Seattle NFT Museum. Local digital artist Maksim Surguy attended the opening of the museum's 'Climate Conversation' exhibition on April 16, which features his designs that are sold as NFTs online, but can also be printed in physical form. "Previously, if you make a digital artwork or physical artwork, there were a lot of limitations about who can see the artwork or how they can own it," said Surguy, who works in Seattle's tech industry and ventured into crypto-based art a year and a half ago. According to a March report from Ireland-based Research and Markets firm, the global NFT market is expected to grow to over $21 billion (roughly Rs.1,606,98 crore) in 2022. "An NFT is really just a contract that signifies the ownership of an asset of some kind," said Peter Hamilton, who co-founded the museum. "These tokens... are basically a contract that says this serial number belongs to this piece of art, and if you own this token, you are the rightful owner." The museum has programming planned throughout the year. "I can't emphasize enough how important the educational part of this museum is," said Hamilton. "We're trying to onboard folks and help them see what the value of NFTs are and help people pull back the curtain a little bit on what blockchain is and what its utility is."
  16. Dan O’Dowd is hardly the first California tech titan to bankroll his own campaign for high political office. What makes him unusual is that he has no interest in winning the US Senate seat he is vying for, or even in challenging the other candidates competing in the 7 June primary. O’Dowd, a software entrepreneur with a 40-year history of working on military, aerospace and other commercial contracts, is running, rather, out of frustration at his fellow tech entrepreneur, Elon Musk, whom he accuses of endangering road safety with a driver assistance software package he’s put in his Tesla electric cars. O’Dowd doesn’t deny that this is a strikingly narrow platform on which to run for public office. He’s aware, too, that there are risks as well as potential rewards in using a political campaign to take a swing at the world’s richest man – especially now that Musk is dominating headlines as the prospective new owner of Twitter. But O’Dowd is also unapologetic about being a single-issue candidate. His mission, he says, is to ensure that government regulators become much tougher with the “move fast and break things” ethos that has inspired Musk and many other tech pioneers over the past two decades. He’s spent $650,000 on advertising so far and seems poised to spend a lot more over the next six weeks. And, in his mind, it’s not just about Musk. O’Dowd believes that the problems he’s documented with Tesla’s “full self-driving” software package – problems that, according to publicly available video footage, have caused vehicles to veer unexpectedly into the wrong lane, turn the wrong way, crash into poles and endanger other road users – are emblematic of a broader and increasingly serious problem. In a world increasingly dependent on computers to run critical machinery, O’Dowd says, it’s vital that the software is built as securely and reliably as possible, only Silicon Valley rarely sees it that way. If we can’t stop semi-autonomous cars crashing into things, he argues, how are we supposed to keep our power grids, hospitals, office computers and other vital systems safe from cyber attack and other threats? O’Dowd has spent his career aspiring to build “software that never fails and can’t be hacked” for projects including fighter jets, nuclear bombers and a space exploration vehicle for Nasa, so the issue is deeply personal to him. “The bigger picture,” he said, “is about software and computers in general. It’s about making computers safe for humanity.” Political analysts have been scratching their heads over this pitch from the moment O’Dowd announced his late entry into the Senate race on 19 April. Was this really a politically motivated campaign, they asked, or just a branding exercise to drum up business for O’Dowd’s Santa Barbara-based company, Green Hills Software, and whose clients include several of Tesla’s car making rivals including General Motors, BMW and Daimler? Was O’Dowd targeting Tesla because he really thought it was behaving worse than the dozens of other companies working to develop a self-driving car, or was he merely piggy-backing on Musk’s name recognition to attract media attention? “It’s unusual for a campaign to be so singularly focused on a very discrete commercial issue,” said Dan Weiner, director of the elections and government program at the Brennan Center for Justice. “You could say this is the apotheosis of a system in which corporate interests have free rein to engage with the political process.” O’Dowd insisted that his campaign had nothing to do with commercial self-interest. Rather, he said, he found Tesla’s “full self-driving” software package more alarming than anything else in commercial use because it was, in his words, “amazingly terrible” – a car guidance system that, according to his analysis, goes wrong every eight minutes, whereas similarly experimental guidance systems run by competitors including the Google subsidiary Waymo typically go tens of thousands of miles before encountering problems. O’Dowd was similarly dismissive of the notion, promoted by Tesla, that such problems can be fixed by patching the software with online upgrades. Both the federal National Highway Transport Safety Administration and the California Department of Motor Vehicles are investigating Tesla’s driver enhancement software following a flurry of documented malfunctions. Meanwhile, Lena Gonzalez, the chair of the transportation committee in the California state senate, is pushing to close a loophole whereby Tesla is exempted from reporting crash data on its “full self-driving” package. “Senator Gonzalez believes protecting California drivers is of the utmost importance,” her office said in a statement. It’s not entirely clear what else O’Dowd thinks government regulators should be doing, or how he can further his cause by running for a senate seat that the incumbent, Alex Padilla, is expected to win easily. It’s more common for influential industry players to lobby government directly (O’Dowd said he’s tried), and if that fails, to sponsor a ballot initiative calling for a specific change in public policy. O’Dowd said: “I didn’t think of a ballot initiative.” O’Dowd was eloquent about the urgent need to use the highest grade software to build critical infrastructure – a theme he has spent years building into a public campaign he calls the Dawn Project. But he struggled to square that lofty goal with his focus on petty online squabbles, in which Musk supporters accuse him of being slow, out of touch, and worse, and he fires back that Musk’s cars are being driven by “artificial stupidity”. Musk himself had a go at O’Dowd in January, after the Dawn Project took out a full-page advertisement in the New York Times to attack him. “Green Hills software is a pile of trash,” Musk tweeted back. He has kept quiet ever since.
  17. Given the amount of options available on the market, it can be hard to separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to the best gaming monitors. Thankfully, one of our favourite models, the LG-27GL83A-B, is available for cheap right now on Amazon. You’ll need to be quick, though, as this a time-limited offer! With a $110 (29%) discount, the LG-27GL83A-B comes down from its $379.99 premium price point to a much more manageable $269.99. Folks in the UK can get in on the savings too, bagging the monitor for £299.99 (32%) instead of its £439.99 full price. While the LG-27GL83A-B may seem like a fairly standard display on the surface, it packs a Nano IPS panel. This technology gives the monitor a wider colour gamut compared to standard IPS displays, which helps colour pop more and create a more impactful image when playing the best PC games. It doesn’t skimp on other important gaming specs though, boasting a 144Hz refresh rate, 1440p resolution, and G-Sync compatibility. 18. This will be a day long remembered, as there’s a new Elden Ring lightsaber mod that immediately transforms the RPG game into an even better Souls-like Star Wars game than even Jedi Fallen Order – and, at last, an Elden Ring Darth Vader skin, with a Maul one on the way. These mods are the first uploads by Xelerate on Nexus Mods for Elden Ring, and they already threaten to turn it into the ultimate Star Wars open-world game. The first mod is the double-bladed lightsaber pack, as favoured by Darth Maul, which replaces the Godskin Peeler twinblade and comes in a variety of colours. Xelerate promises that the Darth Maul skin you can see in the screenshot above “will be released soon”, finally giving Star Wars fans that Darth Maul game they’ve been hoping for – even if via Elden Ring mods. The opportunity to drop Maul to his knees and scream “MALENIA!” at the start of her boss fight will be too much temptation for me to pass up. Xelenia has already added a Darth Vader skin to the game, however the only lightsaber so far is the double-bladed variety – despite Vader wielding a single blade in the video below. The modder says that players should “stay tuned for more Star Wars-themed mods”, so hopefully we’ll get a katana lightsaber swap soon – and maybe some Jedi into the bargain. I’d love to dash around the Lands Between as Yoda.
