  1. A great storage deal for the holidays. Looking to get rid of some spinning platters? Western Digital is selling the WD Blue SN550 NVMe SSD in a 1TB capacity for just $89.99, down from $129.99, at its own store. In our review of the WD Blue SN550 NVMe SSD, we called it the "best DRAMless SSD yet." If you're looking for a quick, no frills boot drive or something to store games and files, this will do the job for you at a great price. We also liked that Western Digital offers a five-year warranty on this drive. WD claims that it offers sequential reads of 2400 MB/s and sequential writes at 1950MB/s.
  2. Lots of holdouts are being forced off the May 2019 Update The latest Windows 10 statistics are out from AdDuplex, and they show the new October 2020 Update making steady progress – and the May 2019 Update dropping like a stone. The latter is happening because Microsoft is pushing automatic upgrades for Windows 10 users still using the May 2019 Update, so they don’t have any choice in moving away from this version – mainly because support ends on December 8. These users are being upgraded in waves, and obviously a good amount have found themselves automatically updated this month, as AdDuplex’s figures for November show that the May 2019 Update has dropped from a 22% share to 10.2%. In other words, user numbers have more than halved in a short space of time. The most recent October 2020 Update has moved forward in November, gaining a decent chunk of users to find itself on 8.8% (it was on a lowly 1.7% last month, but was only launched later in October). Migration aplenty That gain for the October 2020 Update will doubtless have consisted of some folks pushed from the May 2019 Update, and the same is true for the May 2020 Update, although the latter dropped a percentage point to 37.6% (so more folks must have left this upgrade for the most recent October 2020 Update, than came from the May 2019 Update). Those with compatibility blocks on those two most recent updates would have been moved from the May 2019 Update to the November 2019 Update, and therefore this version gained as well, moving up to 36.4% (from 32.4%). AdDuplex derives its figures from some 100,000 Windows 10 PCs, via Microsoft Store apps which carry its adverts.

  3. Even 200 tons of awesome mechanized might fears Keanu Reeves. Originally an Epic Games Store timed exclusive, Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries would have been available on other PC digital distribution platforms from December 10, but developer Piranha Games has decided to delay the game's launch to 2021. The date coincides with possibly the biggest game of 2020, Cyberpunk 2077, and the studio has admitted that it doesn't want its own release eclipsed by developer CD Projekt Red's long-in-development game. Now Playing: Cyberpunk 2077: YOUR Questions Answered! "Any developer wants their titles to get as much attention as possible, and obviously sharing a release date with Cyberpunk was less than optimal," the studio said in a statement. "Day one sales and marketing are so important to a successful product launch, and we believe that rescheduling our release date will allow MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries to have the opportunity and attention it deserve." Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries and its Hero of the Sphere DLC will instead arrive in Spring 2021 on Steam, GOG, EGS, Microsoft Store, and Xbox consoles. Piranha Games will make use of its largest marketing initiative to date to drive as much attention as possible towards its game. The positive side-effect to this delay is that the studio will be able to further polish Mechwarriors 5, adding more improvements, quality of life features, and fine-tuning the single-player experience further. Cyberpunk 2077 launches on PC, Stadia, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S / Series X next month. While recent Night City Wire episodes have shown what the game will look like on Sony and Microsoft's new consoles through backwards compatibility, a full-fledged next-gen upgrade will be available next year for free. Check out our Cyberpunk 2077 preorder guide to learn more about the game.

  5. Blink and you'll miss it. The 911 GT3 is the talk of the Porsche town nowadays, but the Turbo S remains the flagship version outside of the track-focused GT models. A special car deserves a special regional launch, and what better way to show off its capabilities if not by allowing people to experience its neck-twisting acceleration? Porsche Australia held a “Launch Control” event on a 2.2-kilometer (1.3-mile) runway at Sydney Airport where it brought a bunch of 992-gen Turbo S coupes to the delight of the gathered audience. A total of 48 VIPs were invited to check out the turbo monster with its standard angular quad exhausts and the optional sports exhaust featuring dual oval tips. Gallery: 2021 Porsche 911 Turbo S Coupe: First Drive The 3.8-liter twin-turbo boxer six-cylinder, all-wheel drive, eight-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission, and a launch control system are ingredients for one of the quickest-accelerating production cars ever. Porsche says the coupe rockets to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 2.6 seconds, but as with most German automakers and their sports cars, the peeps from Zuffenhausen are being overly cautious. Our colleagues at Car and Driver had the opportunity to launch the 911 Turbo S and achieved a mind-blowing 0-60 time in 2.2 seconds or only a tenth of a second slower than the all-conquering 918 Spyder. As if that wasn’t impressive enough, 0-30 mph took 0.9 seconds and the quarter-mile run was achieved in 10.1 seconds at 137 mph (220 km/h). Porsche didn’t release any numbers following the Launch Control event held Down Under, but the footage shot from a helicopter gives us an idea about how ludicrously quick the 992 Turbo S is with launch control activated. That’s despite the fact it weighs about 40 kilograms (88 pounds) more than before, which hasn’t affected its top speed of 205 mph (330 km/h) to match the 991-gen model.
  6. Donald Trump has said he will leave the White House if Joe Biden is formally confirmed as the next US president by the electoral college. The president has refused to accept defeat in the 3 November vote, and told reporters on Thursday it would be "hard" to concede. He also once again repeated unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud. Mr Biden leads Mr Trump 306 votes to 232 under the electoral college system used to pick US presidents. The tally is far more than the 270 needed to win, and Mr Biden also leads the po[CENSORED]r vote by more than six million. Electors will meet next month to formalise the vote, with the Democrat Joe Biden due to be sworn in as president on 20 January. The president and his supporters have lodged a number of legal challenges over the election, but most have been dismissed. Earlier this week, Mr Trump finally agreed to allow the formal transition to President-elect Biden's team to begin, following several weeks of uncertainty. What Biden's new foreign policy team tells us What is the presidential transition? The decision means Mr Biden is able to receive top security briefings and access key government officials and millions of dollars in funds as he prepares to take over on 20 January. What did Trump say? Asked on Thursday whether he would agree to leave the White House if he lost the electoral college vote on 14 December, Mr Trump responded: "Certainly I will, certainly I will and you know that." However, he went on to say that "if they do [elect Joe Biden], they made a mistake", adding: "It's going to be a very hard thing to concede." He also made more claims of "massive fraud" during the election, without offering any proof. Under the US electoral system, voters do not directly choose the next president. A simple guide to the electoral college Instead, they vote for 538 officials, who are allocated to American states based on their po[CENSORED]tion size. The electors almost always vote for the candidate that won the most votes in their states, and although it is possible for some to disregard the voters' pick no result has ever been changed this way.

  9. New Canonical portfolio will be exempt from Docker’s per-user rate limits Buoyed by the recent Snyk security report that found security vulnerabilities in several container images except Ubuntu’s, the company behind it, Canonical, has published a whole portfolio of hardened images. Unsurprisingly, Canonical has partnered with Docker to streamline the delivery of the secure portfolio of images through Docker Hub. “Canonical and Docker will partner together to ensure that hardened free and commercial Ubuntu images will be available to all developer software supply chains for multi-cloud app development,” Docker's Matt Carter wrote in a blog post announcing the collaboration. Long term security The 2020 Snyk State of Open Source Security report discovered security vulnerabilities in several po[CENSORED]r container images, while giving a clean chit to Canonical’s Ubuntu image. The company builds on this achievement and in a FAQ posted on its new repository, promises to fix any Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) within 24 hours of being reported. Canonical’s LTS portfolio will include both free and commercial images and already lists about a dozen images for prominent open source software including Redis, Nginx, Grafana, Prometheus, and several others. All of the hardened images in the repository will have a five-year free security maintenance period, same as the underlying Ubuntu LTS release they’re based on. Paying customers of Canonical’s Ubuntu Pro program will get an additional five years of support as part of the ten year Extended Security Maintenance contract. Canonical’s announcement is the second major security-related initiative by Docker in as many months. Just last month application security company Snyk announced that they’ve started providing security scanning capabilities for images pushed to Docker Hub. Canonical hopes the two developments will help “drive a surge in Kubernetes adoption as companies embrace digital transformation while significantly reducing operating risk in the solution application life-cycle.”

  16. A Weibo user has shared some interesting photographs of a domestic gaming PC that's being cooked up in China. The grand novelty is that the machine isn't using an Intel or AMD processor, but an Arm-powered chip, more specifically the Phytium FT-2000/4. The China Electronics Corporation (CEC) is behind the labeled PKS gaming PC. You might not have heard of the company before, but the Chinese fabless chipmaker Phytium should ring a bell. That's because the CEC is the parent company of Phytium. Now that the connection is made, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the PKS would leverage one of Phytium's FeiTeng 64-bit ARMv8-based processors. The FT-2000/4 is an FCBGA processor with 1,144 pins that measure 35 x 35mm. TSMC produces the FT-2000/4 for Phytium on the foundry's 16nm process node. The FT-2000/4 wields four FTC663 processing cores, which run at three different clock speeds: 2.2 GHz, 2.6 GHz, and 3 GHz. The quad-core part also comes equipped with 4MB of L2 cache (split into 2MB per two cores) and 4MB of L3 cache. According to Phytium, the FT-2000/4 has a typical power consumption of a mere 10W. The FT-2000/4 processor supports dual-channel DDR4-3200 memory and delivers up to 34 PCIe 3.0 lanes. The latter allows for a configuration of up to two PCIe 3.0 x16 lanes and two PCIe 3.0 x1 lanes. As a result, the Chinese firm outfits the PKS gaming PC with 32GB of DDR4 memory and a discrete graphics card with 8GB of memory. The Chinese firm didn't specify the model of the graphics card, but it'll be interesting to see whether the FT-2000/4 at 10W will be the bottleneck. On the storage side, the FT-2000/4 can accommodate up to four SATA III ports, which is why the manufacturer advertises support for conventional SSDs and high-capacity hard drives. In terms of connectivity, the PKS gaming PC offers one Gigabit Ethernet port, six unspecified USB ports, one HDMI port, and one DisplayPort output. There's also dual-display support. The PKS gaming PC is a domestic product and will likely feature a homegrown operating system, such as UOS (Unity Operating System) or NeoKylin. The caveat with Chinese operating systems is that they are based on some kind of Linux distribution, and there aren't many native Linux games out there. Software like Wine or CrossOver exists to allow Linux users to run Windows games, but it's one of those hit-or-miss experiences. However, the PKS gaming PC could probably succeed as an entry-level gaming PC or find its way into gaming cyber cafes where MMOs and MMORPGs prevail over more graphics-intensive titles.
  17. The latest F1 game from Codemasters has a new trial version on consoles. F1 2020 has released a free trial, letting players on PS4 and Xbox One try out the sim before they buy it. The trial shows off a few of the game's modes and tracks, and lets you test out the game's splitscreen options. The trial features a two-player split screen option around the Austrian Red Bull Ring, letting players try out the simulation's handling on this test track and race against one another. You can also try out the new "casual" handling mode here, which makes for easier steering and fewer penalties for shoddy cornering, or driving on grass. This mode is aimed at novice players who struggle with the simulation aspects of games like this one. Now Playing: Exclusive: F1 2020 Gameplay And My Team Details My Team mode is also represented in the trial, with players able to pick a team and teammate, and then race across the opening weekend of the season. This race takes you to Melbourne, Australia, and if you do well you can continue the rest of the season in the full game should you purchase it. Career mode does not feature in the trial, and you cannot experience online races, either. The full F1 2020 experience features all 22 circuits from the original F1 2020 schedule--even though many of these races did not happen this year, due to COVID-19 restrictions. It's like a look into an alternate universe where 2020 looked very different.
  18. Buyouts of up to over $500,000 are reportedly being offered. Electrification is the future and GM is one of the brands who have been bullish about this. This is most especially true with its luxury brand, Cadillac; The General has already poured a hefty amount of money into Cadillac EV development, and it's not showing any signs of slowing down. So much so, that the American company is reportedly offering buyouts to Cadillac dealers who are not willing to sell EVs, according to Automotive News. Of note, GM requires updates to dealerships who want to sell Cadillac EVs – an upgrade that could cost at least $200,000, which involves adding charging stations, as well as investing in the tools and worker training for vehicle repairs. Gallery: 2023 Cadillac Lyriq But for those who aren't ready to join the trend, or at least not willing to invest so much money for the required upgrades, GM is reportedly offering $300,000 to over $500,000 for them to drop the Cadillac brand in their dealerships. The buyout amount isn't official, though, and was given to Automotive News by undisclosed sources. The publication said that Cadillac declined to disclose the exact details of the buyout option, plus dealers who will opt for this must agree not to reveal the details in public. Automotive News also reported that dealer lawyers and consultants said that Cadillac dealerships who opt for the buyout can still sell Cadillacs through 2021, and have access to the company's used-vehicle auction up until the end of 2024. These dealers have until November 30 to come up with a decision. Cadillac isn't the only GM brand that's pushing for electrification. GMC is on the trend, too, with the Hummer EV, but only half of GMC dealerships are willing to sell the revived nameplate, which will, of course, require similar aforementioned upgrades. However, we haven't heard of any GMC buyout deal in connection to selling Hummer EVs.
  19. "But my fear of failure never approached in magnitude my fear of what if. What if I never tried at all?" he said commencement speech on a light note. “I want the university to know that I do not take this prestigious honour lightly. I’ve already instructed my wife and my children, from this point on, they have to address me as Dr. Ferrell. There will be no exceptions. Especially at our children’s various school functions and when opening Christmas presents. “Yay, we got the new Xbox, thank you Dad! I mean, Dr. Ferrell.” I’ve been informed that I can now perform minimally invasive surgery at any time or any place, even if people don’t want it. In fact, I am legally obligated to perform minor surgery at the end of today’s ceremonies, or my doctor’s degree will be revoked,” he said. After recounting his journey, he further added, “You’re never not afraid. I’m still afraid. I was afraid to write this speech. And now, I’m just realising how many people are watching me right now, and it’s scary. Can you please look away while I deliver the rest of the speech? But my fear of failure never approached in magnitude my fear of what if. What if I never tried at all?”
  20. Former US Secretary of State John Kerry will act as climate envoy when US President-elect Joe Biden takes office. Mr Kerry was one of several people named for top positions by the Biden transition team on Monday. Other key picks included long-time Biden aide Antony Blinken as secretary of state, while reports say former Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen will be the choice for treasury secretary. It comes as calls are growing for Donald Trump to concede the election. He has made unsubstantiated claims of electoral fraud and is continuing to pursue legal challenges over the result. How big are Biden's climate change ambitions? Can Trump overturn the election result? Mr Biden is projected to beat President Trump by 306 votes to 232 when the US electoral college meets to formally confirm the winner on 14 December. This is far above the 270 votes he needs. In a statement following the announcement on Monday, Mr Biden said: "I need a team ready on day one to help me reclaim America's seat at the head of the table, rally the world to meet the biggest challenges we face, and advance our security, prosperity, and values. This is the crux of that team." Some of the positions require confirmation in the US Senate. Who is John Kerry and what will he do? Mr Kerry was chosen for the role of special presidential envoy for climate. The Biden transition team said the position would see him "fight climate change full-time". He is also set to be the first official dedicated to climate change to sit on the National Security Council. Mr Kerry signed the Paris climate agreement on behalf of the US in 2016. The deal committed countries to working to limit the global temperature rise. Under Mr Trump, the US recently became the first country to formally withdraw from the agreement. But Mr Biden has said he plans to rejoin the accord as soon as possible. In 2019, Mr Kerry launched a coalition of world leaders and celebrities - dubbed World War Zero - to call for climate change action and net zero carbon emissions. Following news of his new role on Monday, he tweeted: "America will soon have a government that treats the climate crisis as the urgent national security threat it is." Covid pandemic has little impact on rise in CO2 Mr Kerry previously served as secretary of state during Barack Obama's second term as president. A veteran Democratic politician, he lost to incumbent Republican George W Bush in the 2004 presidential election. He was a senator for 28 years and chairman of the foreign relations committee. He endorsed Mr Biden to be the Democratic Party's candidate in the 2020 race and joined him on the campaign trail. What about the other roles? Mr Blinken was nominated as secretary of state - the most important foreign policy position. The 58-year-old was deputy secretary of state and deputy national security adviser during the Obama administration, in which Mr Biden served as vice-president. He is expected to manage a Biden foreign policy agenda that will emphasise re-engaging with Western allies. Avril Haines was nominated as the first female director of national intelligence. Ms Haines is a former deputy director of the CIA and deputy national security adviser. Alejandro Mayorkas was the first Latino nominated to serve as secretary of homeland security. He previously served as deputy secretary of homeland security under President Obama. Jake Sullivan was named White House national security adviser. Mr Sullivan served as Mr Biden's national security adviser during Mr Obama's second term. Long-time diplomat Linda Thomas-Greenfield was nominated US ambassador to the UN. She also served under President Obama, including as assistant secretary of state for African affairs between 2013 and 2017. Biden projects stability and familiarity Analysis box by Barbara Plett-Usher, State Department correspondent In his choice of a national security team, Joe Biden has signalled that the US is resuming its conventional international role, after four turbulent years of Donald Trump's America First. He's appointing Obama administration veterans to top positions and elevating a long-serving career diplomat sidelined by the Trump administration. His pick for secretary of state, Anthony Blinken, is an advocate of global alliances. Mr Blinken will lead the charge to re-establish ties with allies and rejoin agreements and institutions rejected by Trump. And there's no doubt that he'll be speaking for the man in the White House: Mr Blinken has advised Biden on foreign policy for so long he's been described as an alter ego. Another familiar face is former Secretary of State John Kerry. The president-elect's decision to give him a new cabinet-level position as climate envoy shows he's treating the issue as a significant national security threat. But even with the old team this is not going to be Obama 2.0: the landscape has shifted in both America and the world during the last four years. Still, Mr Biden is projecting stability and familiarity, and international leaders know what they will be getting What about the calls for Trump to concede? President Trump is continuing to refuse to concede and facilitate a smooth presidential transition. He has been pursuing so-far fruitless legal challenges in several states to try to overturn his loss. His latest legal setback came on Saturday when a judge dismissed his attempt to have millions of postal votes in Pennsylvania invalidated. It comes as calls are growing for him to accept defeat. Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a prominent Trump ally, called the president's legal team a "national embarrassment". "I have been a supporter of the president's. I voted for him twice. But elections have consequences, and we cannot continue to act as if something happened here that didn't happen," he told ABC. How is President Trump challenging the result? 'Overvoting' and other US fraud claims fact-checked High-profile Trump supporter Stephen Schwarzman, the CEO of investment company Blackstone, also said it was time for Mr Trump to accept he lost. "Like many in the business community, I am ready to help President-elect Biden and his team as they confront the significant challenges of rebuilding our post-Covid economy," he said in a statement reported by US media.
