  1. Asus ROG Strix XG17 Review, The Ultimate 240Hz Portable Gaming Monitor Portable monitors have been around for a while. Most people consider portable monitors a novelty that gives the convenience of portability at the expense of performance and picture quality. The Asus ROG XG17AHPE is a mobile gaming screen that shows that some portable monitors might not be a joke after all. It's got a 240Hz refresh rate, along with a 3ms response time, all crammed into a thin and light 17 inch IPS display and built-in speaker to boot. I can attest to how much of a pain it is to need a second monitor on the road and, even worse, trying to travel with one. Part of me wishes this monitor was around during my old LAN party days; it would have saved me a whole lot of trouble. The XG17 easily fits into a backpack or even a large messenger bag. You simply plug it in via USB-C, and you're ready to rock. The foldable smart case, which acts as both a cover and a stand for the XG17, was a tad unwieldy. You need to be wary of a wobbly table as if the monitor gets the least bit jostled it'll fall back flat, which is very annoying if you happen to be the middle of the match of Mortal Kombat 11 or a flowing Twitter rant. It would have been great to have some sort of fixed kickstand instead of doing some strange folio origami to get the monitor from falling over, but that's what Asus has gone with. There is a version of the XG17 that comes with a tripod stand and carrying bag for an extra $100, but that feels expensive on what is already a costly display. The portability of the XG17 is its main selling point. It comes in at 2.3 lbs and only 0.4 inches thin; it mostly feels like you're carrying around a giant tablet that plugs into your laptop or game console. I can't overstate how incredibly convenient it has been to pair my work laptop with the XG17 and work on my balcony on a nice day. It's a perfect work-from-home companion if you're tight on space or don't have a desk. You can easily set it pretty much anywhere... so long as nothing bumps into the surface, you're using. But the Asus screen is also specced for gaming too. I used the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 with an RTX 2060 and a 1080p 120Hz display to see the 240Hz upgrade the XG17 provided in action. I started with the usual suspects, such as CS Go and Call of Duty, and was thoroughly impressed with the fast refresh rate and the color accuracy, even during most intense shootouts. Though, one of my favorite non-scientific ways of seeing how fast and colorful a monitor is the Goku test where I played Dragonball FighterZ with nothing but Gokus fighting on screen. The colors popped without oversaturating and kept up with all the action on the screen. It passed the Goku test with a high GPS (Gokus Per Second). The XG17 works surprisingly well with the consoles too. I know plenty of people who like to travel with their PS4 only to find the HDMI ports on the hotel TV inaccessible, much to their dismay. There are a place and a market for folks who need a nice looking display that travels well. I wouldn't be surprised if we see these sort of displays marketing directly to different esports teams and leagues for a little on-the-go practice. The XG17 also comes with a built-in 7800mAh battery, which lasted close to three hours non-gaming and a little under two hours when I played the final act of Resident Evil 3 Remake on my balcony. The monitor supports quick charge 3.0, so an hour of charge got me back to around 60 percent, which is pretty damned speedy. If you have a power bank, you can squeeze out some more game time in case you're stuck at the airport or a BBQ. For the most part, I kept the display plugged in and charging. Outside of gaming, I found the XG17 extra useful standing when plugged into my MacBook Pro in portrait mode for working at the dining room table. Here, I can efficiently work in a doc and monitor Twitter or Slack for breaking news. For me, two screens are crucial to getting anything done, as with most people working from home right now. The two USB-C and micro-HDM ports mean that you can also plug-in other devices, from phones to a Nintendo Switch. The XG17 offers an excellent second screen experience that travels easily without compromising color or speed. The $500 price point will be a significant barrier for most people considering that you can buy a 27 inch 240Hz for around $400. This portable monitor is really for those gamers with travel-heavy schedules and who need a high-performance display that you don't have to check-in. But we'll admit, that's a hell of a niche audience to target. The ROG Strix XG17AHPE is coming to store shelves in early May.

  3. A total of 142 people have applied for the England head coach's job, with more than half meeting the criteria, says Baroness Campbell, the Football Association's head of women's football. Phil Neville will leave the role next summer, so his replacement will be in charge for Euro 2021 and may also lead Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics. After that, England are targeting World Cup success in 2023. "We've had an unbelievable response," said Baroness Campbell. "I'm not judging it against what we've had in the past, it's saying, 'who has got the ability to take us right to the top of Everest?' "We're at the final camp - how do we get to the top of that mountain? That's what my job is. To find that person for the players. They deserve the best and I want to get them the best if I can." Who could replace Neville? : His successor will have the rare privilege of leading the team into a European Championship on home soil, and could even oversee five major tournaments in the space of five summers. With the rearranged Olympic Games of 2021 set to be followed by the Euros in 2022, a World Cup in 2023, the Paris 2024 Olympics and then the 2025 Euros, and with many of the senior England squad approaching the peaks of their careers, there has arguably never been a better time to manage the national team. Neville's appointment in 2018 came as something of a surprise, but this time who are the main runners and riders to succeed him and, crucially, try to steer England to a first major trophy? Here, in alphabetical order, are some of the leading contenders. FA to make 124 jobs redundant : English football's governing body - a not-for-profit organisation - says it is planning for potential financial losses of about £300m. Eighty-two staff members will lose their jobs, while 42 vacancies will not be filled. FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said the organisation faced a "significant" financial challenge. "It might seem that football has weathered the storm by getting the top flight men's game playing again," he said. "However, unfortunately the past few months have impacted the FA severely and we have lost a significant amount of money that we can never recoup. "We also anticipate that many of our future revenue streams will be affected for a considerable time." The FA has lost all revenue from events due to be held at Wembley Stadium since March, and from events, such as music concerts and NFL matches, which the stadium was set to host later this year. In addition, it has lost all revenue from hospitality - about £35m per year - at Wembley, which it anticipates "will probably take years to recover". "Proposing redundancies is the toughest cost-saving measure that any organisation can consider implementing, but we believe that we must now adapt and future-proof the organisation to ensure our cost base reflects a future with significantly lower revenues," said Bullingham. "We have a responsibility to preserve our core functions that regulate and serve English football. We also have a duty to support our men's and women's senior teams in their efforts to win major tournaments. "That means we have set out in our proposals some difficult choices because we do not think we can afford to do all the things that we did before. We believe the impact of this crisis is to force us to focus more than ever on our key priorities." He added: "The next few weeks will be very tough for everyone at the FA and our aim is to ensure that we emerge in the strongest possible state and be ready for better times in the future." In the FA's financial statements to the year ending 31 July 2019, its directors were remunerated £1.1m. Former chief executive Martin Glenn earned £814,000 while chairman Greg Clarke was paid £184,000. Applications closed at the end of June, with Baroness Campbell saying last month that there had been "very, very good interest from significantly experienced coaches". Jill Ellis, who coached the United States to World Cup victories in 2015 and 2019, remains a favourite to succeed Neville, while Chelsea manager Emma Hayes, ex-Manchester City coach Nick Cushing and Manchester United's Casey Stoney are among those in contention for the role. The FA announced last month it would make 124 positions redundant, as it faces losses of around £300m caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Baroness Campbell says the women's game "has taken its hit" but insists that their plans will not be adversely affected by a £75m per year budget cut. "I'm afraid the reality is smaller budgets, smaller focus, smaller staffing," she told Fair Play: The Women in Sport Show. "What we're talking about now is what do we stop, and how do we find different, creative ways to do some of the things we were going to do through funding."

  4. Elvis Presley's only grandson died on Sunday, his mother Lisa Marie Presley's manager has confirmed. Benjamin Keough was 27, but manager Roger Widynowski gave no further details about his death. He said Lisa Marie, 52, was "heartbroken, inconsolable and beyond devastated". "She adored that boy. He was the love of her life," Widynowski said, adding that she was "trying to stay strong" for her three daughters. The Los Angeles County coroner's office confirmed that the death of a person of his name and age was under investigation, but there was no other immediate information on the circumstances. He was the younger of the two children Lisa Marie Presley had with her first husband, musician Danny Keough, before their divorce in 1994. The other is actress Riley Keough, 31. Lisa Marie had previously described Keough's resemblance to her famous father as "just uncanny." Rock 'n' roll legend Elvis Presley died in 1977 aged 42. Lisa Marie also has twin 11-year-old daughters with her fourth husband, musician and producer Michael Lockwood, who she wed in 2006 after brief marriages to pop star Michael Jackson and actor Nicolas Cage. Her close relationship with her son, whose middle name was Storm, apparently inspired the title track on her third album, Storm & Grace, released in 2012.

  8. The former Leeds defender had been diagnosed with lymphoma in the last year and also had dementia. A family statement read: "Jack died peacefully on Friday, July 10 at the age of 85. He was at home in Northumberland, with his family by his side. "As well as a friend to many, he was a much-adored husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. "We cannot express how proud we are of the extraordinary life he led and the pleasure he brought to so many people in different countries and from all walks of life. "He was a thoroughly honest, kind, funny and genuine man who always had time for people. "His loss will leave a huge hole in all our lives but we are thankful for a lifetime of happy memories." One of English football's most po[CENSORED]r characters, he was in the team that won the World Cup at Wembley in 1966, alongside his brother Bobby. He made a record number of appearances for Leeds and achieved unprecedented success with the Republic of Ireland. The England football team tweeted to say they were "devastated" by the news, while he was hailed as a man who "changed Irish football forever" by the Football Association of Ireland. "He was a great and lovable character and he will be greatly missed. The world of football and the world beyond football has lost one of the greats. RIP old friend," said England's 1966 World Cup final hat-trick hero Sir Geoff Hurst. Charlton had spells in charge of Sheffield Wednesday, Middlesbrough and Newcastle. He led the Republic of Ireland to their first major finals at Euro 88 and the World Cup quarter-finals at Italia 90. Leeds United, where he spent his entire 21-year playing career and made a joint club record 773 appearances before retiring as a player in 1973, said they were "deeply saddened". Charlton, part of the Leeds side that won the 1969 League title and the 1972 FA Cup, is the third club legend and former England international to die this year after Norman Hunter and Trevor Cherry. Despite not being called into the England team until days before his 30th birthday, Charlton won 35 caps and, playing alongside younger brother Bobby, lifted the Jules Rimet Trophy at Wembley in 1966. He also helped England finish third at the 1968 European Championship, and was voted the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year in 1967. "Saddened to hear that Jack Charlton has passed away," wrote former England striker Gary Lineker on Twitter. "World Cup winner with England, manager of probably the best ever Ireland side and a wonderfully infectious personality to boot. RIP Jack." Former Republic of Ireland forward John Aldridge said: "Absolutely gutted that big Jack has passed away. "What a football man, loved and adored, especially in Ireland. The best manager I was lucky to play for. "The times we had on and off the pitch were priceless. My thoughts are with Pat and the family. RIP my good friend. Never forgotten." He is survived by wife Pat, whom he married in 1958, and their three children, John, Deborah and Peter. Charlton's granddaughter, journalist Emma Wilkinson, tweeted: "Beyond sad to have to say goodbye to my beloved Grandad, Jack Charlton. "He enriched so many lives through football, friendship and family. He was a kind, funny and thoroughly genuine man and our family will miss him enormously." Irish president Michael D Higgins said: "He leaves a legacy of outstanding leadership of a group of players of many diverse talents, which he moulded into the successful team that captured the imagination of the nation."
