It’s no surprise that van life has been a hot topic for quite some time – even before the pandemic. However, it’s clear that coronavirus has changed life as we know it, leading to an even bigger boom in the go-anywhere industry. As such, the latest Tiny Home Tours video showcases a brilliantly converted mini bus. While many builds of this type are a labor of love and take ages to finish, the owner of this van – a man named Brian – only needed two weeks. Before we get into the details of his mini skoolie, this video is a great example that building these mobile living machines doesn’t always have to be expensive. Compared to some of the more extravagant builds we’ve covered, the total budget for this project was roughly $13,000. One of the clear party pieces – among many – of this go-anywhere machine is the kitchen area. Along with the Mexican tile backsplash, the area is well-appointed, with a gas stove, running water, and ample storage space for all of the ingredients you could ever want – as the vehicle started out in life as a school bus, the original windows fit perfectly with the design. Following the similar theme of repurposing, Brian uses the emergency exit hatch of the bus as a moonroof. He wanted to keep the feature, as his first adventure vehicle was a Honda Element which had the same fresh air capabilities. Regardless, all of the room in the vehicle allows for one human guest along with a feline companion named Phoenix. Semantics aside, it’s certainly inspiring to see the positive attitude of everyone involved in the realm of van life. The extravagance of your van doesn’t matter so much as the experience and joy it gives you.

The pandemic gave weddings a makeover — from cutting down on flamboyance to hosting intimate gatherings. The same has also impacted the creative abilities of designers as they now play with softer tones, dainty designs and flattering silhouettes that are not time-sensitive. One such collection was born out of designer Payal Singhal’s latest collaboration with Indya, a homegrown clothing brand. Featuring pastels along with Singhal’s signature tribal designs, the collection comprises 64 stylish creations ranging from shararas, kurtas, drop-crotch pants, pre-stitched sarees and much more. In an email interaction with indianexpress.com, the designer talks about the collection, haute couture entering the line of prèt and a lot more. Our endeavour has always been to be an all-encompassing label that offers something for everyone at every price point. We wanted to do a collection that makes the Payal Singhal signature more approachable and attainable, and for that, Indya made for the perfect brand. What are your views on haute couture entering the line of prèt? Couture can really never become prèt but a couture designer can definitely release a more toned-down version of their collection as prèt. We have been doing prèt for a while now and it makes the label more accessible to a larger audience catering to different occasions. How did you ensure this collection is sustainable? The collection is sustainable in the way that we are working with all the raw materials while making sure there is no wastage. This collection is really not claiming to be a sustainable product because it’s made with a poly blend fabric, but we have all other ethical practices to make the brand itself conscious. I don’t think designers need to compromise for any collection be it couture or a prèt line, as what you really bring to the table is the best that you can do at the price point that you’re trying to create a product in. Fashion is believed to be a form of self-expression. How do you then make sure your designs are suitable for everyone? The idea behind creating a line is meant to be something that can be related to by several people or like-minded people, and that’s how you put together a collection that is a form of self-expression, yet wearable by many. What do you expect spring trends to be this year? Do you think the pandemic will have a role to play in it? During the pandemic, we spent a lot of time working on the back end and tech side of our website and also added new product lines, gift cards and a prèt line to enhance the product offerings and the customer experience. The retail scene was obviously not in a good space till about August, but after that with stores opening up things started to pick up, and towards Diwali, the retail market really picked up again. Weddings are getting smaller; obviously trends are going to move towards lighter Indian wear — you can dress up or dress down based on how many people are at the wedding and that is what we are doing with Indya because these are wardrobe builders for your Indian wear and you can actually take pieces and mix and match them, accessorise them and make them as heavy as you want.

KARACHI: The central office of the Geo and Jang Media Group was attacked on Sunday by protesters in Karachi. A mob broke a walkthrough gate installed at the entrance of the building as well as the main entrance door to the building. The staff inside the building were also attacked and violently pushed around. According to Geo News Karachi Bureau Chief Faheem Siddiqui, protesters attacked the building "under an elaborate plot". He said a protest had been announced in advance but "there were no law enforcement officers present" and no action was taken against the protesters when they attacked. The protesters were enraged over a video from a Geo News programme on social media, the edited version of which has gone viral, said Siddiqui. "What you see on social media is not how it was said on the show," he said, adding that Geo News had also aired a clarification as well as an apology on the same show. "What remains to be known is who these protesters are," he added. Anchor Irshad Bhatti from television show "Khabarnaak" clarified that his show is of comedy and satire and "Sindh and Sindhis are part of his identity as is any other province." "Ladies and gentleman, welcome. I wish to state here, that in the last one or two shows, our brothers from Sindh, where on the one hand showed us a lot of appreciation and gave us a lot of love, on the other hand, expressed reservations against a sentence or two. "I wish to tell everyone this is a programme of satire and comedy, and the way Punjab, KP, Balochistan, GB, Azad Kashmir are dear to me, Sindh and Sindhis are a part of my identity. My life is dedicated to Sindh and Sindhis," he said. Managing Director Geo News Azhar Abbas, sharing footage of the damage left in the wake of the attack, wrote: "Everyone has right to peaceful protest. We will protect and support that right. But doing violence and taking the law into their own hands, regardless of the cause, can’t be tolerated. Dialogue is answer to all issues — not violence." Sindh Information Minister Nasir Hussain Shah arrived at the venue and proceeded to resolve the matter by speaking to the protesters. He had earlier also appeared on air to express solidarity with the media group. When asked why police did not act promptly, Shah said he strongly condemns such violence. "I spoke to the SSP and I was told the protest was to head from Shaheen Complex to Press Club but they came this way." He said everyone has a right to protest but no one has the right to harm anyone. "Action will be taken against whoever took the law into their hands." The information minister said that Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah has also ordered "strict action" to be taken against all those found involved. Federal Minister for Information Shibli Faraz, speaking to Geo News, said that violence is not acceptable under any circumstances. "If someone has any grievance or reservations, they always have the choice to launch a formal protest [...] I have found out that the matter pertains to a show where some light humour was aired. The immediate responsibility is that of the Sindh government [...] why were no security forces available?" he asked. Governor Sindh Imran Ismail said it was an unfortunate incident that had occurred and expressed his sympathies. "We must understand people's sensitivities while airing things on our channels. Something occurred that hurt people's sentiments. As far as I know, an apology and clarification were given by Geo, so this matter should have been let go of. "They could have still protested peacefully with banners, but violence can never be supported. So to all those protesting outside, I request: Please accept Geo’s apology and clarification. Forgive whatever transpired. This goes completely against the hospitality and love for people that are part and parcel of Sindh’s values and culture," Imran said. The governor was surprised to know police had not sprung into action. He said he would ask the Inspector General of Police to look into the matter immediately and to send officers for the staff’s protection. Minister for Interior Sheikh Rasheed condemned the attack on Geo News’ building and termed it a "cowardly act". "The government fully believes in freedom of the press," Rasheed said, adding: "I hope Sindh government will ensure the security of the Jang, Geo office." He said his ministry will extend all possible support. Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry also condemned the attack and demanded that police take action against those responsible. "A disagreement does not mean you round up 200-400 people and attack a place," he said. Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar strongly condemned the attack, terming it as an attack on freedom of expression. He also expressed solidarity with Geo and Jang, a handout said. Buzdar said the incumbent government believes in the freedom of media. PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb, condemning the incident, said it must be probed in a transparent and unbiased manner. "We express our solidarity with Geo News," she said. PPP MPA Awais Qadir Shah said that it was highly condemnable that an attack was carried out under the pretext of a protest. "This is a highly unfortunate incident which cannot be condemned enough," he said. Shah said that the People's Party supports freedom of expression and a fair investigation of the incident. Qaumi Watan Party spokesperson Ahmed Jadoon, condemning the attack, said that elements involved should be brought to justice. PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat and Speaker Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi also condemned the violence. MQM convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui it was wholly unacceptable that a media house be attacked in such a manner under the guise of a protest. He said that the absence of police officers at the time of the attack raises a lot of questions. The Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors (AEMEND) issued a statement strongly condemning the violent attack on the Karachi offices of Geo News "by a mob armed with clubs and stones". "AEMEND believes in people’s inalienable right to peaceful protest but using violence under the pretext of protest is unacceptable and is a clear violation of law," read the statement. The association urged the provincial government to "take immediate action" against who vandalised the media office and subjected its staff to violence. The APNS strongly condemned the attack on the Jang Group premises by demonstrators, who ranscked the offices and manhandled the employees of the group. Hameed Haroon, President, and Sarmad Ali, Secretary General, of the All Pakistan Newspapers Society, in a press statement termed the incident attack on the press and expressed their serious concern on the vandalism perpetuated by the demonstrators, who in the garb of protest and sit-in besieged the Jang Group's main office in Karachi and instead of stressing and raising their demands, attacked and ransacked the office and harassed the staff, including female workers and journalists. They stated that every section of the society has a right to agitate its disagreement against any content, but it should not be allowed to take law into its hand and attack the premises of media organisations and intimidate media workers. This attitude not only depicts the intolerance exacerbating in our society but also highlights growing lawlessness in the country. It is regrettable that the law enforcing agencies in the city remained silent spectators when the media house was being subjected to vandalism. The APNS office bearers urged upon the chief minister Sindh and the IG police to take immediate action against the culprits and provide security to media houses to prevent such heinious act against the media in future. Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists has condemned the attack on Geo and Jang offices demanding of the government to arrest the perpetrators. In a statement, PFUJ President Shahzada Zulfiqar and Secretary General Nasir Zaidi slammed the police and Sindh government for the lack of action against the attackers. “It is unfortunate that the police were present there but they did not prevent the attackers. The police turned a blind eye as the mob ransacked the office besides beating up the staff.” They asked the government to throughly probe the attack. This is not an attack of Geo and Jang but on the freedom of expression. The PPP being the champion of democracy and freedom of expression should take prompt action against the attackers besides ensuring that such incidents do not happen in the future.”Zulfiqar and Zaidi said that the media has already been under siege for some years. “In these testing times, media need support from political parties and various circles of the society. If any party or community has complaint against any content, then there is a mechanism to lodge a complaint and get the matter sorted out but the attackers resorted to fascist tactics to vent their anger.” The PFUJ leaders said that they expressed complete solidarity with the Geo and Jang. “We cannot leave the workers of Jang Group alone in these testing times and would like to make it very clear that the entire journalist community is behind the workers of this media outlet.” Meanwhile, Sindh Information and Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah has condemned the incident of hooliganism and vandalism at the offices of the Jang Group and Geo Television in Karachi on Sunday.Talking to media persons outside the Jang and Geo TV offices after the attack on Sunday, the Sindh information minister said that strict action would be taken against whosoever was found involved in the incident. He clarified that a peaceful protest was the right of every person. He said that one was supposed to do peaceful protest against any offensive or insulting statement. He mentioned that the Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah had taken cognizance of the incident. He announced that the Sindh government would compensate for the losses caused due to vandalism. He said lawful action would be taken against the miscreants involved in the incidents in view of the CCTV camera footage of the incident, adding that action would be taken against the attackers as per the demand of Geo TV. He said the Sindhi nation did carry historical importance as they would not let anyone to insult the Sindhi nation or the land of Sindh. “If anyone carries any such impression, then he should get rid of it,” said the Sindh minister. He said that an entire institution could not be held responsible for the act of an individual. He mentioned that the Geo TV had instantly apologized for the remarks after they went on-air. He appealed to the protesters doing protest against the remarks to end their agitation. Meanwhile, Sindh Law and Environment Adviser Barrister Murtaza Wahab, who also acts as the spokesman for the Sindh government, said that the Sindh CM had ordered a probe into the incident of attack on the offices of Jang Group and Geo TV. While condemning the incident, he said that due action would be taken against the attackers for bringing them to justice. Barrister Wahab said that the security of the offices of Jang Group and Geo TV and that of other media houses would be improved by the Sindh government. Meanwhile, Sindh Minister Jam Ikramullah Dharejo, Mukesh Kumar Chawla, Shehla Raza, and Special Assistant to Sindh CM Syed Qasim Naveed Qamar also condemned the attack on Jang and Geo TV offices. The provincial cabinet members said that the Sindh government always stood for protecting the freedom of expression and media institutions would be given protection in this regard. Sindh Minister for Education Saeed Ghani also condemned the attack on the Geo and Jang office on Sunday and said the PPP believed in the freedom of expression and press. He added that the Sindh chief minister had assured action against the attackers.

Sure, it’s clear that the boys from Hoonigan po[CENSORED]rized the YouTube drag-race trend, but each and every variation carries the same excitement. As such, The Fast Lane Truck recently started a series where they line up the Ram TRX against some serious competition. So far the TRX – which remains undefeated in the series – has gapped vehicles like the previous-gen Ford Raptor pickup and even a GT500 Mustang, but the latest video could put an end to that. Sure, the competition might just look like any old International Harvester pickup. However, this example is the mother of all sleepers when it comes to truck racing. From the outside, it may just look like any other 54’ International, but like any sleeper, all of the goodies are under the skin. As such, the body sits on a 2000 Chevy Silverado chassis – which supposedly mated to the original truck surprisingly well. It keeps the same Chevy engine with a number of mods included but not limited to a turbocharger, Z06 cam, and new rod bolts. Semantics aside, the first race showed that the TRX has its work set out to keep its undefeated record; even after a bad start, the International underdog kept within a car length of the Ram. The next run proved to be a lot more predictable with the International hooking up much better at the start, but still finishing behind the competition – we’d be remiss not to mention that the International is also all-wheel-drive.As it looks like the guys are running much less than a quarter-mile, we’d wager that a driver mod or longer drag strip could produce a very different result. Regardless, it’s clear that both of these trucks are heaps of fun to drive on the limit.

Dia Mirza recently tied the knot with businessman Vaibhav Rekhi in an intimate ceremony. And while we are still not over the wedding photos, pictures from other occasions have started flooding the internet. For instance, her haldi photos are everywhere and the actor is looking pretty as a picture in them. In keeping with the event, she was seen in an all yellow ensemble where the intricately-embroidered kurta was teamed with matching sharara pants. This was teamed with a yellow sheer dupatta. The Thappad actor always keeps her make-up minimum and it was no different this time. The look was rounded up with understated make-up and floral jewellery. Check out the pictures here.Even though kept under wraps till the very end, details of her wedding are being shared little by little on the internet. And Dia really made the day her own by doing things her way. This included the wedding being conducted by a priestess, to excluding practices like kanyadaan And bidaai. The actor has stressed on the importance of taking care of the environment and she did her bit by organising a “completely sustainable ceremony without plastics or any waste.”For her wedding, Dia chose a red and gold Raw Mango sari which was paired with a matching blouse. She looked radiant and beautiful.

Golf and luxury vehicles are a match made in heaven. Just recently, professional golfer and PGA Tour rookie Tae-Hoon Kim is probably one of the luckiest people to prove that with his latest ace during the first round of this year's The Genesis Invitational in Pacific Palisades, California. After hitting a hole-in-one on the 16th hole at The Riviera Country Club, Kim won an all-new 2021 Genesis G80. You can watch the smooth hole-in-one via the time-stamped highlights reel embedded on top of this page. Even better, this is the third Genesis vehicle added into Kim's garage in just over four months. The Korean pro golfer has previously won the 2020 Genesis Championship in Incheon, Korea last October, which won him a Genesis GV80 and the invitation to join the PGA Tour, the recent contest where he got the G80 sedan. That win in October was his fourth Korean Tour win, giving Kim the Order of Merit for 2020 and a Genesis GV70. In his interview with PGA Tour after his hole-in-one in California, Kim said via a translator that he gave the two Genesis SUVs to his parents, but he's not sure yet what to do with the executive sedan. As mentioned earlier, this is Kim's first PGA Tour attendance. Call it beginner's luck or just plain skill, his sweet 168-yard, par-3 hole-in-one surely earned him respect from the other golfers that day – with the G80 sedan just standing in as a bonus. "We are so proud of Tae-Hoon and are pleased that an emerging talent sharing our Korean roots is already having success here in the early rounds of our hometown Genesis Invitational," said Mark Del Rosso, President & CEO of Genesis Motor North America.

The very nature of waves indicates a repetitive pattern. Some can be bigger or rougher than others. Some can destroy cities while some barely wash away footsteps or manage to scratch sandcastles on the beach, all while being in motion constantly. The essence of life is movement, change and growth, if we see it that way. That there will be good and bad times, calm and crisis, seamless smooth days interrupted by stress, troughs and crests, rise and fall, and health and sickness, is a fact. As far as the Covid 19 pandemic is concerned, we are not out of the weeds yet. With the positive news of vaccination, data indicating reduction in death toll and reports of buses and trains resuming services, and malls opening up, many assumed otherwise. For a year, most people held on and respected lockdowns, social distancing and regulations announced by health and governing departments. News of a second wave has rattled many. Historically speaking, we have survived several waves (read years) and faces of crisis such as war, cholera, polio myelitis, small pox, terrorism and more. With the news of possible consecutive waves, some of us are understandably thrown off with our desperate hope of “life getting back to normal” threatened once again. Chats are buzzing with conjecture and speculation with an underlying anxiety and brewing frustration hard to miss. There are a few things I would like to share, with a confession of not having aced them at all, but certainly aiming for them with all the muscle I have got. There are three key things that can help us cope with repetitive crisis: Acceptance of reality: As a defence to the challenges and obstacles facing us, we perpetually reject reality. “If only” being the prefix of many of our internal dialogues, rejecting what is, and fantasising about what could/should/must be, leads us to feel a gamut of negative emotions. To effectively cope, we need just the opposite. Accepting and embracing reality helps us focus on “what” instead of “why” and allows us to weigh our best options moving forward. Whether it is a first-time crisis or second or consecutive ones, acceptance helps us set the stage for coping and persisting. Pain versus pleasure principle: Suffering is neither easy nor welcome. We function out of the pain avoidance (at all costs) principle. Furthermore, we “must” experience pleasure, joy and cheer as a natural consequence of our existence. If we can balance our need to feel pleasure over pain, learn to associate suffering and pain to certain lessons, gains and growth, coping can become easier. Conscious cognition: Our self-talk about crisis, especially when tough times are prolonged or repeated, makes it harder to accept, overcome and persist, compounding the pain. Our mental-talk takes us into the past and throws us into the future, with negative emotions bursting out of us. Centering our presence, being aware of the present, and mindful of our words to ourselves, focusing on the problem to solve in the moment, identifying irrationalities and striving to be resilient can help us cope. Presence helps us positively and constructively engage with the problem, emotions and even people to solve and resolve issues.

Acclaimed British star Daniel Radcliffe is reflecting on his acting in Harry Potter days and how he feels about his performance years later. Chatting with Lord of the Rings actor Elijah Wood for Empire Magazine, Radcliffe explained how he thinks the early acting credits for Harry Potter are quite ‘embarrassing’ for him. "I'm intensely embarrassed by some of my acting, obviously. But yeah, it's like asking, 'How do you feel about your teenage years?' There's so much in there that it's almost impossible to single out one feeling,” he said. "It's hard to separate my relationship with Harry from my relationship with the films as a whole,” he shared. "I'm incredibly grateful for the experience. It showed me what I want to do with the rest of my life. To find out early on what you love is really lucky," he added. In the interview, Wood, who played Frodo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, detailed how he often gets mistaken for Radcliffe, given the fact that both the stars played such iconic roles in cinematic history. "Once I was in an elevator, just me and one other person and I could feel them looking at me intently,” he recalled. “Just before the door opened, he finally got up the courage, pointed at me and said, 'Harry Potter!' I said, 'No!' and I walked away,” he added. Radcliffe responded to that, saying: “Though we're both short, pale, blue-eyed and brown-haired, I would say that we don't exactly look alike. But the idea of us is exactly the same. When people say to me, 'Lord of the Rings!' I literally just say, 'Nope. The other one.' "

[Auto / Moto] Tesla's Cheap $25,000 Car Could Cost Just $19,000
Dr@g0n posted a topic in Auto / Moto
YouTuber Andy Slye optimistically explains how the upcoming cheap $25,000 Tesla could only cost $19,000, and possibly kill off the gas competition. At the beginning of the video he warns us that he is being very optimistic about all this, but it could happen if the timelines lineup. He starts with explaining how Elon Musk always wanted a high volume affordable EV. In his Master Plan from way back in 2006, he outlined how he wanted a low volume expensive car (Roadster) to fund a medium volume car at lower price (Model S). Then use the money from that to fund the creation of a high volume affordable car (Model 3 and/or 2?). The tweet below gives you a good idea of what he is talking about. Meaning to create EVs for everyone, including the commercial sector: affordable cars, semi trucks, vans, and more. The video continues outlining what was said at the end of Tesla's Battery Day presentation. Besides talking about the $25k Tesla car (which will likely be a hatchback), Musk said it would be fully autonomous in three years and still cost $25k. He then explains how the $25k Tesla could come sooner than expected because the design phase has already started in China. The new model will be built in Giga Shanghai, which is extremely efficient and can pump out EVs very quickly. The YouTuber goes on to explain how the $25k Tesla could be $19k (after Tesla destination fees) if the government passes the Green Act bill that would allow for $7,000 in tax credits for 400,000 Teslas. This would only happen if the Model 2 hits our shores with the new tax credits in place. This would put Tesla’s upcoming hatchback under $20k, the same price as the gasoline compact car competition. However, he reminds us that a $25k Tesla would be very basic, but still have all the positives that come with a Tesla, such as battery efficiency, safety, and OTA updates. The baguette – a mix of wheat flour, water, yeast, salt and a pinch of savoir-faire and as much a symbol of France as the Eiffel Tower – may soon join UNESCO’s listing of cultural treasures. Bakers say the traditional craft loaf, whose purchase from the local bakery has for decades been a ritual in French daily life, is being pushed off shop shelves, even in France, by frozen bread sticks made on giant assembly lines. “There’s not one single secret to making a good traditional baguette,” said Mickael Reydellet, owner of eight bakeries. “It requires time, a savoir-faire, the right way of baking, good flour without additives. “The Confederation of French Bakers has submitted its application to be added to the U.N. rankings of intangible treasures. The baguette finds itself up against two rivals for the French bid: The zinc-plated rooftops of Paris and the Jura region’s Biou d’Arbois wine festival. France’s culture minister will make her recommendation to the president in March. Bakers say the UNESCO listing would protect a know-how that has passed through generations and shield the baguette from imposters around the world. The UNESCO “intangible heritage” marker – meant to recognise oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals and methods of traditional craftsmanship – already covers ancient methods of making flat breads in Iran and Kazakhstan. The craft behind 1,500 or more beers brewed in Belgium has been recognised, as has the Neapolitan art of pizza twirling. A 1993 French government decree dictates that “traditional” baguettes must be made from nothing more than the four classic ingredients. Fermentation of the dough should last 15 to 20 hours in a temperature between 4 to 6 degrees Celsius. France’s boulangeries have been hit hard by COVID-19 restrictions over the past year. Reydellet said: “This title would comfort bakers and encourage the next generation. “About 6 million baguettes are sold daily in France. But Dominique Anract, president of the bakers’ federation said the cultural habit was under threat, with some 30,000 bakeries closing since the 1950s as supermarkets took over. “The first errand we ask of a child is to go buy a baguette from a bakery,” Anract said. “We owe it to ourselves to protect these habits.”

With a series of perfectly executed maneuvers to gently float down to the Martian soil, NASA´s Perseverance rover went one step ahead in its quest to find signs of a past life as it overcame a tense landing phase on Thursday. "Touchdown confirmed," said operations lead Swati Mohan at 3:55 pm Eastern Time (2055 GMT), as mission control at NASA´s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena erupted in cheers. The autonomously guided procedure was in fact completed more than 11 minutes earlier, the length of time it took for radio signals to return to Earth. Shortly after landing, the rover sent back its first black-and-white images, revealing a rocky field at the landing site in the Jezero Crater, just north of the Red Planet´s equator. More images, video of the descent and perhaps the first sounds of Mars ever recorded by microphones are expected in the coming hours as the rover relays data to overhead satellites. US President Joe Biden hailed the "historic" event. "Today proved once again that with the power of science and American ingenuity, nothing is beyond the realm of possibility," he tweeted. During a press call, NASA Associate Administrator Thomas Zurbuchen theatrically tore up the landing phase´s contingency plan, to emphasize how well things had gone, and admitted he violated Covid protocol by hugging people because of the emotions of the moment. Over the coming years, Perseverance will attempt to collect 30 rock and soil samples in sealed tubes, to be eventually sent back to Earth sometime in the 2030s for lab analysis. About the size of an SUV, the craft weighs a ton, is equipped with a seven foot- (two meter-) long robotic arm, has 19 cameras, two microphones and a suite of cutting-edge instruments to assist in its scientific goals. Before it could set out on its lofty quest, it first had to overcome the dreaded "seven minutes of terror" -- the risky entry, descent and landing phase that has scuppered nearly half of all missions to Mars. The spacecraft carrying Perseverance careened into the Martian atmosphere at 12,500 miles (20,000 kilometers) per hour, protected by its heat shield, then deployed a supersonic parachute the size of a Little League field, before firing up an eight-engined jetpack. Finally, it lowered the rover carefully to the ground on a set of cables. Allen Chen, lead engineer for the landing stage, said a new guidance system called "Terrain Relative Navigation," which uses a special camera to identify surface features and compare them to an onboard map, was key to landing in a rugged region of scientific interest. "We are in a nice flat spot, the vehicle is only tilted by about 1.2 degrees," he said. "We did successfully find that parking lot, and have a safe rover on the ground." Scientists believe that around 3.5 billion years ago the crater was home to a river that flowed into a deep lake, depositing sediment in a fan-shaped delta. Perseverance ended up landing about two kilometers (a mile) southeast of the delta, NASA scientist Ken Farley said, in a geologically significant area. Mars was warmer and wetter in its distant past, and while previous exploration has determined the planet was habitable, Perseverance is tasked with determining whether it was actually inhabited. It will begin drilling its first samples in summer, and along the way it will deploy new instruments to scan for organic matter, map chemical composition and zap rocks with a laser to study the vapor. Despite the rover´s state-of-the-art technology, bringing samples back to Earth remains crucial because of anticipated ambiguities in the specimens it documents. For example, fossils that arose from ancient microbes may look suspiciously similar to patterns caused by precipitation. Before getting to the main mission, NASA wants to run several eye-catching experiments. Tucked under Perseverance´s belly is a small helicopter drone that will attempt the first powered flight on another planet in a few weeks´ time. Dubbed Ingenuity, it will have to achieve lift in an atmosphere that´s one percent the density of Earth´s, a demonstration of concept that could revolutionize the way humans explore other planets Another experiment involves an instrument that can convert oxygen from Mars´s primarily carbon dioxide atmosphere, much like a plant. The idea is that humans eventually won´t need to carry their own oxygen on hypothetical future trips, which is crucial for rocket fuel as well as for breathing. The rover is only the fifth ever to set its wheels down on Mars. The feat was first accomplished in 1997, and all of them have been American. The US is also preparing for an eventual human mission to the planet sometime in the 2030s, though planning remains very preliminary.
